Watched GarandThumb’s video on the Obrez and thought that it looked a lot like a Star Wars blaster.
So, here’s Garan Thum, smuggler with a slightly inaccurate but massively powerful heavy blaster pistol.

In your opinion, how should a sniper be balanced?
(assuming the game also has automatics and shotguns)
slow firing speed 1000%
also possibly being very unforgiving if you miss (the obrez from jabroni brawl fits this sort of unforgiving nature imo)
i am also a bit of a slut for railguns (quake 2's is probably the best ive seen) so not being able to kill on their own but rather being a source of good burst damage in a game that incentivises quick-switching can be extremely satisfying for a sniper in a game (doom eternal does this really nicely as well)
as for a more grounded multiplayer game, itll be much harder to balance sadly ,_, but then ya gotta crank up the punishment for missing. the main issue with snipers in a lot of multiplayer games is that not many other options overlap with the effective range of the sniper so that must be kept in mind

Choosing/modelling the player's weapon.
I actually put quite a lot of thought into choosing the players weapon over the start of my project, which, looking back now, I find it quite suprising that I did actually put so much thought, maybe too much, into it.
The first weapon - The PM/Makarov
Tumblr media
I think this gun is one of the first you think of, when you think about soviet/post apocalyptic weapons. It's in quite a few different games, set in/around Russia, or in an apocalypse. Games like; Into The Radius, Tarkov and S.T.A.L.K.E.R..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did start 3D modelling this, but at most, it was just a couple of blocks slapped together. Instead, I picked up on this 3D model and was going to use it:
Tumblr media
But I decided not to, for a couple reasons, which I'll explain now. At this point, when I had this 3D model, I was off for the weekend before I had the opportunity to implement it. Over the weekend, I played 2 games, Marauders, and Holdfast. In Marauders, I mainly used a small pistol, similar to the Makarov. I found that every firefight I'd get into with this pistol in Marauders, felt kind of spammy, and like my shots didn't really have much force behind it. Then, later when I played Holdfast, I used a musket. When a musket is fired, it takes a long time to reload. I found that this adds a lot more of a reason to think about your shot placement, instead of randomly firing in a direction.
I decided that I wanted to add something like this to my game, and avoid having something like the pistol from Marauders, as while this works perfectly well in the extraction shooter, high paced format, I didn't feel like it would compliment my game. So, with these loosely defined ideas in my mind, I decided on using a different, iconic, soviet weapon, that ticked the right boxes. This was:
The second weapon: The Mosin Nagant.
Tumblr media
Being a gun that was aging even in WW2, the Mosin Nagant rarely makes many appearances outside WW2 media, and as a low tier sniper rifle in shooters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But it did make an appearance in the, I guess, pseudo-apocalypse game, Hunt: Showdown, in two forms actually, one of which, I'll talk about next.
Tumblr media
The Mosin Nagant is a bolt action rifle, which is why it's probably stuck as a low tier sniper in some games, but this is a pro for me, as it allows for gameplay that is more tense and strategic.
I started to model this gun next, and as I was trying to figure out the right length for the barrel, I realised, what is the player character doing? Lugging around a full length rifle in a cramped building? Is he dumb? So I decided, once again, to switch out the gun yet again, Luckily at this point, It was literally just a cylinder, so no work was really lost.
As I was trying to think what gun I could possibly use now, I remembered that Hunt: Showdown had a second, shorter variant of the Mosin Nagant. And so, we move on to yet another weapon:
The third weapon: The Mosin Nagant "Obrez"
Tumblr media
An Obrez is the Russian word for a sawn off firearm, and in English, it's a loan word, typically used to refer to the Mosin Nagant Obrez, a weapon mainly used by criminals and partisans who needed a concealed weapon, and couldn't get a handgun. While other guns were used to create Obrez, the Mosin was very cheap and easy to obtain around the peak of it's use, so it has become near synonymous.
The only game I know to have featured an Obrez is Hunt: Showdown.
Tumblr media
I decided, this time, I'd use and modify a pre-existing Mosin Nagant model, and make it into an Obrez. (which is pretty ironic looking back) I picked out this model and I got to work, desperately trying to make it work.
Tumblr media
I tried removing the whole barrel completely, I tried removing the middle of the rifle, saving the barrel to re-attach it. Whatever I did, the disparity between the base model, and my crude attempts to modify it were incredibly obvious and ugly, and after a couple hours of trying to make it work, even trying to make one from scratch at one point, I decided, once again, it was simply not going to work with my current set of skills. I contemplated just ditching all the choices I'd made that got me here, and just using a base model of a gun that would kind of work in my game. But, I had a pretty good idea. If when I try to make or modify a model, it comes out really ugly, why don't I try to make that ugliness fit in with the design in the first place? And what uglier gun is there than...
The fourth weapon: The Improvised Gun
...the pipe guns from Fallout 4!
Tumblr media
In Fallout 4, there's a whole class of pipe guns. All of these are improvised guns, made from wood, pipes and scrap metal, and it'll be easy enough to create something similar, right? Well, for some reason, I decided that this was too simple, and I needed more inspiration from elsewhere, so I decided on the slightly-more-complex-but-still-improvised-and-post-apocalyptic-and-also-easter-european-y weapons from the Metro series, specifically the two shotguns in the series' third installment, Exodus, the Ashot and the Shambler.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With fresh inspiration and newfound faith in my philosophy of "It's not ugly if it's supposed to look like that", and maybe a bit of pressure from the fact that I'd spent way too much time on this, I finally managed to get some decent progress, and, eventually, create a finished, half-decent 3D model. The gun I've now named (during the writing of this post) "Ol' Bearable", as it's just bearable enough for me to have some sense of pride in it.

My biggest issue with Goncharov is, despite being a Soviet mafia movie set in Italy...Italian and Soviet firearms are distinctly missing from center screen.
It would make the most sense for Goncharov to be armed with, say, a Makarov, or a PPM, or something similar, literally any KGB standard sidearm.
Or, if he were to have disposed of his service weapon, to have claimed an Italian manufactured replacement of one of any of the various gun-makers in the country (and even in the 80s, there were plenty of them.)
I have NO idea where in the hell the Thompson that shows up in the poster comes from. The Thompson SMG was no longer in use by ANY group by the 80s, hell, its replacement, the M3 Grease Gun, was well on its way out in every place other than the hands of the Viet Cong.
The apperance of the Nagant Revolver was rather nice, though. And I DID NOT expect someone to whip out a fuckin’ OBREZ!

I fell down a weird... hole in the internet the last 24 hours, reading articles that I want to talk about but cannot talk about for the exact reasons I want to talk about them. I've backed all these links up on the wayback machine in fear they ever go offline. All of these are explicit, talk about sex and genitalia explicitly, and discuss consent, social suppression, and non-consent. First, The Tearoom - A public bathroom simulator about police surveillance of MSM (men who have sex with men) based off a nonfiction study from the US and UK from the 1970s. Sent me off on so many directions, I clicked every god damn link this thing has. What I remember is mostly in the area of sexuality but only because the guns and masculinity commentary are so smoothly succinct.
"What if this gun is my penis" is a pretty obvious metaphor, but it helped me ensure a variety of shapes to orally service. You could say gun culture is somewhat body-positive -- there is relatively little size-shaming around unique pistol designs (e.g. a Mauser C96) or unique concepts (e.g. the trendy "Obrez"), a gun can be "cool" for a myriad of reasons. Take that, size queens! More importantly, guns also help me escalate my resistance against Twitch's draconian game-banning policies because guns are clearly not penises. Therefore, there is no basis for Twitch to ban my game, like it banned the rest of my games -- however, if they still ban my game, then it will be the first time in history that the game industry regulates and bans a game about guns
The Husband Stitch by Carmen Maria Machado - a short story, discussed in the next article. Warnings are for themes of non-consent (which is different from sexual assault, but also a warning for a mentioned semi-described sexual assault), explicit sexual situations, and just. The scariest stage directions I've ever read. Cultural context just in case: the green ribbon is a reference to this specific retelling as a children's story, which may be spoilers but I assume you're expected to recognize it? And 'The Husband Stitch' a medical practice/myth/nightmare where, during vaginal birth where the perineum is torn or cut, it is stitched up... with one extra stitch "for the husband" to make the wife tighter when having vaginal sex. Something about a human being an object for the pleasure of someone else. Of bodies not belonging to themselves. Not of specific incidents of trauma but the damage of existing in a world in a way that has you cut away pieces of yourself. I want to talk about this story and what I still don't understand about it. I want to talk about the ribbons.
What I Don't Tell My Students About 'The Husband Stitch' - an article discussing the above story. I guess it doesn't say anything you don't already get from the story. I think it intentionally glosses over the consent themes to focus on the disbelief at the root of that consent violation, and the role that disbelief plays in specifically misogyny. Which is also in racism, in antisemitism, in the way absolute reality is unbearable. Something something. Gender and sexuality. Something something, even as an aroace agender, the kindness and necessity of depicting perversion in art.

She-Ra World War I au, because I have played too much Battlefield 1
Catra, Entrapta, Scorpia, Kyle, Rogelio and Lonnie all crew a Mark V tank named Darla. Entrapta is constantly making improvements and repairs, as expected, so it’s not even comparable to a real Mark V anymore. Catra is the commander, Entrapta is the driver, Scorpia crews one sponson by herself because there’s no space for anyone else on that side (these things are very small inside), and the Horde Trio are on the other sponson.
Everyone carries custom guns made by Entrapta. Scorpia gets a carbine version of the Mars Automatic, chambered in .455 Webley Auto and with a stock. Catra has a C96 in 9x25mm Mauser Export with a stock and a snail mag. Kyle has an obrez, which are infamous for their high recoil and overall crappiness. Rogelio has a C93 with a stock and extended magazine, and Lonnie has a regular Luger P08 Artillery variant.
People keep asking about the guns, and Catra is so fed up with it that whenever someone asks, she shoots their helmet off with unerring precision
Scorpia is just as big and strong as she is in canon. She was introduced to the rest of the crew while carrying a 60lb Maxim gun with no effort. Entrapta made the Mars carbine as a gift for the Christmas Truce in 1914 because nothing else would fit in her hands.
Entrapta has a gas mask instead of a welding mask.
One of the carrier pigeons is named Emily, and she follows Entrapta everywhere, no matter how implausible it is for a pigeon to get there.
Entrapta constantly passes out while working on Darla because Mark Vs are notorious for their bad ventilation, and the fumes from the engine would gather in the cabin. Entrapta has been meaning to put in a better ventilation system, but she never gets around to it. Everyone else lets this happen because they assume the gas mask can filter out carbon monoxide. It can’t.
Hordak has to order nightly inspections of the tank to make sure Entrapta doesn’t die after passing out and being left with fumes for hours because no one checked on her
Entrapta later switches to a splatter mask because it offers better eye protection, and she didn’t really need a gas mask
The rebellion characters are mostly in an infantry squad together
Adora is still kind of she ra, because when they go into battle she puts on this
Bow and Perfuma are trans in this au
Bow only joined the army because Glimmer did, and when the physical examiner found out he was trans, Glimmer threatened him into giving Bow a clean bill of health
The unit is all women (except for Bow), in a similar concept to the Harlem Hellfighters
Perfuma joined as a conscientious objector, but every time they fight, she steals Frosta’s rifle and fights with it because Frosta is only 14 and Perfuma cannot restrain herself
Their unit is nicknamed the Princess Alliance. It’s meant to be derogatory, but they use it as a badge of honor
They have a rivalry with the Horde tank crew, to the point they are at war with each other as much as the enemy
Scorpia once threw an entire Maxim gun at Adora because she didn’t recognize her with the armor on, and she was unconscious for a full day
Adora later replaces her armor with something Entrapta made for her as a peace offering between their units, which is lighter and less bulky but more bulletproof because it’s made of better metal, and replaces her MG 08/15 with a Huot Automatic Rifle
I have more about this au, I will post it when I figure it out
Also credit to @spiritsophia for helping me develop this

Unfriendly reminder that Russia has committed warcrimes in Ukraine. They’re probably not going to be prosecuted for it because they’re a big country, and warcrimes are only ever prosecuted as a powertrip for the people who won the war. But just to keep a record, Russia has committed at least two separate offenses multiple times by my count:
Violating Sections 2(b)i, 2(b)ii, 2(b)iv, and 2(b)v of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Deliberately attacking civilians and civilian targets by bombarding cities with no plausible military target nearby, so they can’t just say they missed a military target and hit civilians by accident
Violating Section 2(b)ix of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Attacking hospitals and medical personnel, again by bombardment with no plausible military target nearby
And a third possible one the Russian military hasn’t done yet:
Using thermobaric weapons. I’m not sure if that is a warcrime, but it could be argued as one, due to the unusual method of killing falling under Section 2(b)xx   (Employing weapons, projectiles and material and methods of warfare which are of a nature to cause superfluous injury or unnecessary suffering). They have prepared them and are ready to use them as of Feb 26th 2022. Please spread this around so we can put public pressure on the US and International Criminal Court to prosecute the Russian military leaders and possibly Putin as well. Source for the laws: https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/war-crimes.shtml Source for hospital attacks: https://edition.cnn.com/2015/02/04/europe/ukraine-fighting/index.html Source for civilian attacks: https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/24/europe/ukraine-russia-invasion-friday-intl-hnk/index.html Source for thermobaric warhead deployment: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/02/25/vladimir-putin-poised-unleash-terrifying-new-weapon-battle-kyiv/

My #1 post of 2022
I wonder how many times Razz has lived through the events of the show. When she meets Mara in Hero, she doesn't recognize that's the first time until Mara says she doesn't know her. She's been there and everywhere else so many times that she can't even remember which is which. And she always knows just what to say and just what to show Adora. How many times has she gone through it all? Watched everything fall apart and come back together again? Do you think she ever feels guilty for not having done better? Do you think she misses it, now the magic is there and she doesn't jump around? Was she even know which scene was the right one? Or which path she took to here? What does that do to her?
