Zinelocke, a free fan anthology centered around nuzlocke works (comics, written stuff, etc), is out!
This project was a large labor of love from all the people involved including me. My piece was an illustration of my Myths of Unova finale, where Hydreigon felt like the run ender for everyone involved. Thanks to the zine, you can see more awesome works (art and written!) too! And maybe you will discover some new nuzlocke favs!

just curious who’s running this project! sounds like a cool idea and if i share it wanna know who to properly credit the idea to
Tumblr media
The main person behind the account (and the one who's been answering all questions so far) is myself, Mimca! Hi!
About my modding experience, my first "big" experience as a moderator was for the French forum Nuzlocke France, dedicated to the Pokémon Nuzlocke Challenge, since 2014. From 2015 to 2021, every odd year I've been organizing an event called a Communitylocke. Basically, my job was to create a balanced, fair and easy-to-approach set of rules for participants, answer the participants' questions, and match-up participants when necessary. I've also helped create various timed events on several Pokémon roleplay forums, notably creating the scenarios and collaborating with the mod team in place to fit said scenarios into their setting. I've participated in my first zine as a writer in 2020, and became a Social Media Mod for one in 2021 (if you're interested, you can read all about my previous experience on my Carrd). After a few years, I wanted to go back to "my roots" and organize a more casual event, one that everyone could join — and it just so happened that Level-5 announced a certain New World of Steam, so, here I am! (This all sounded awfully corporate, but TL;DR: I've been modding fan events before, and I'll do my best to lead this new event to completion!)
As a Professor Layton fan, I've been a fan of the good British gentleman since the original release of Curious Village in Europe! I instantly fell in love with the characters and the setting of St Mystere. I've immediately preordered Diabolical Box (got the little Luke phone strap that came with it, he's been protecting my keys with vicious puzzles ever since!) and preordered every new Layton game since. My favorite game is Last Specter, and I'm a proud Mystery Journey defender. Ernest Greeves's got my heart.
Of course, I don't intend to lead this Big Bang all on my own, which is why the Interest Check will also double as Mod Applications! If we have enough interest (and I've got no doubt, with all the positive feedback we've got so far!), then I'll need some help to make the Big Bang a reality for all Layton fans out there! 🤎

Are you considering doing any stories within any of the worlds that you have created, perhaps a book series or a pilot pitch?
oh gosh IDK if I'll ever do something as big as pitch an idea for a show!! but yes one day I'd like to fully write out a few of the stories that I'm slowly developing in my worlds - especially Sparrowmage (my main headworld) and BANG! (a collab story with my gf)
It's likely Sparrowmage will one day be a book or graphic novel or - well, I wanna do something with this world and characters that I've put a lot of heart into and are near and dear to me. Even if it's one-off mini comics focused on the slice of life portion of it, or maybe something like a zine/collection of speculative biology notes on the mythical creatures in the world. I still have a lot of work to put into fleshing out the world and school, and have yet to determine if there's any sort of overarching plot or antagonist. Though I guess I'm not too pressed to come up with one, as the main focus of Sparrowmage is the personal struggles and growth of the characters and their relationships to one another.
And for BANG!, we have much more of an overarching plot planned out and it's been a bit on hiatus as my partner and I are working more on other projects, but I think it'll turn out to be a comic, perhaps with some writing sections! I have no clue when we'll get around to finishing the planning and starting to produce it but I look forward to when we do.
I'm actually planning on practicing comics with a mini-project of mine that I just started (a Pokemon nuzlocke, actually - it's familiar territory for me, drawing Pokemon, and I feel that battles especially will give me opportunity to learn/practice movement, framing, perspective etc). And for writing, I've been slowly writing/posting about a Flight Rising challenge that is also similar to a 'nuzlocke' over on FR with some single-player TTRPG mechanics like random encounters and roll-based decision making which I'm working into the story.... sheesh I sound like a nerd. But I hope putting these mini-stories out there in my free time will give me some experience to carry into telling the stories I truly care about - and that I hope others care about too, perhaps even enough to support my creating them?
I definitely have a fear of any of my stories, specifically Sparrowmage, getting big. I want to share it with people and have a small audience be actually invested in my stuff... but I don't want it to get to the point where there's a fandom, you know? I worry about my characters being misconstrued or my writing choices being scrutinized by so many people. So, nothing as big as a novel to sell or a show to pitch. I never want to sell any rights to my stories, they mean too much to me. BUT! If I do produce any of my stories in full, I will probably love to sell physical copies of it myself, maybe even some extra merch of "fan faves" or smth haha. That sounds fun!
Thank you for asking!! I didn't mean to talk so much but my stories are something I've thought about extensively so you accidentally opened a can of worms lol

WIP ask game
RULES: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
Here I am, working hard on the last zine art piece I have in my tasklist, and then my dear friend who’s supposed to be working on one fic tags me for this and also quotes me at the same time. XDD
I knew you were gonna do it, Sanity, but lmao.
To also quote me, BOLD to assume that I have a dedicated WIP folder. Does anyone have a dedicated WIP folder, that they put files in and then move elsewhere once they’ve finished it?????? I sort things by file type, and my art files by year, so I have a whole host of abandoned pieces, wips, completed stuff, and it’s all mixed together. And also in like eight different places because I’m a gremlin.
So, for art:
Ever After AU
Paralyzer
Christian and Cedric for chase
Room where it happened animatic thumbs
Apollo phone wp
pacrim Shiro
omen SPN au
You ever get moody about a silly AU idea
Sleepy water cave
Yourplayersaidwhat tags
Frisk ukagaka
Verse commission
A Yuffie just because
The lil skykid princeling
Ignis is the best banuk
Herlock ukagaka
And for writing:
Ace!Cloud thing from like 6~8 years ago
Aeris vs the Turks
Child of Light
Banuk Ignis meets some Galahds
The Arduous Task of Living (working title)
Mamma Mia! But FFXV
Masquerade
FFXV Omens (SPN AU)
A Primer of the World
Susato Mikotoba - a bolt of lightning
I’m sure I have more floating around, not counting my big slow idling project of a Pokémon Silver Nuzlocke comic, and various ongoing or dead RP threads, and anything further back than this decade, and whatever actual WIPs are in my sketchbooks (because I have a personal project going on with one sketchbook but I haven’t scanned anything yet).
And I am definitely not tagging as many people as I have wips, bc I am not tagging anyone. If you wanna do it, then you should feel free! I don’t have the spoons to do tagging hahaha

One of the pieces I did for the amazing Nuzlocke Zine run by Arowana, CyanideCrystal and Vivace! Please check it out, there's over 200 pieces of incredible content by members of the nuzlocke community and everyone worked so super hard to make this happen! Nemini Crede turned 11 this September! I literally can't believe it's been 11 years since I first posted the prototype of my comic on the nuzlocke forum (yes i'm well aware of how late I am for the anniversary but shhhhhh). I've been here longer than some of you have been alive (this is a threat) So much has happened and my art has gone in a million different directions and finally settled into something I'm happy making a comic with (and honestly I'm glad I didn't keep the old shit bc the art was so embarrasingly bad). I'm so grateful to the like 3 of you who have stuck with me so far on this journey and I hope you'll continue to do so! Hoenn is known for the beauty of its vast sea routes, but that’s doing the mainland a disservice. Looking down at the shoreline from the hills flanking Verdanturf has a beauty of its own that even being on the glistening emerald water of Slateport Bay cannot capture. – Professor Dan Birch, on his journey through central Hoenn documenting the habitats of various pokemon species.

Multiples of 4 for the specific artist ask thing! :)
8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in
anyone says ootb youre blocked. i dont know that i have any ive totally lost interest in. theyre all just sitting on the backburner. i have like 3 comics in my head that i think about to varying degrees. a couple little adventure games.
real answers probably a nuzlocke comic.
16. Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing
i dunno. people always like my colors. i dont think im good at it and i hate doing it. color balancing mostly. i just cant do it.
24. Do your references include stock images
oh wait like. stock images like man laughing with salad or just generic reference. i mean im sure some stock images have snuck in there. also artists. use reference. dont be afraid. you can pinpoint when i started actively using it. im still learning HOW to use it but still.
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)
no i dont play well with others. i mean id like to i guess. zines especially. but at that point i feel like id just make my own. i dunno. im not super into any fandom so thats kind of a dead end.

35! Go for it! ✨
Oh right, for this ask game! I had nearly forgotten about it XD
35. Ramble about any fic-related thing you want!
If there was one fic-related thing I’d want to ramble about it’d be specifically being a comic artist, and the different things I experienced going from the Pokemon fandom to the RotTMNT fandom as a comic artist.
I spent 5 years creating a Pokemon comic called “Liberty”, based on a nuzlocke playthrough of Pokemon Soul Silver (basically pokemon on hard-mode with permadeath involved for those of you who don’t know what a nuzlocke is). Meanwhile, it’s been just over a year since my first foray into creating comics for the Rise fandom.
The Similarities
The Disparity between Fanart and Fanfiction
Being a comic artist is odd sometimes because I basically do both fanart and fanficiton at the same time. I can understand and vibe with what a lot of both fanartists and fanfiction writers go through and deal with. This is why I feel like I can answer a lot of these fanfiction questions despite a good chunk of my story-telling being visual.
I am also aware of the disparity between fanart often getting a lot more eyes and attention than fanfiction. Deciding to write a piece of fanfiction instead of draw it out in comic format is often a calculated choice on my part, because writing prose takes more energy from me and often gets less rewards via views and interaction from readers. But despite it taking more energy, it takes less overall time for me to write something out than draw the same story, so I often factor that in when deciding which medium to create a story in.
I feel bad that a lot of fanfiction writers don’t get the attention that they deserve because of this disparity, so may I remind readers to please please PLEASE support your fanfiction creators and interact with their work! It seriously means a lot to them! Even a little message or a reblog will do! The main similarity between these two fandoms is this disparity, and I think it’d be awesome if we could get the number of interactions between fanart/fancomics and fanfiction to be more equal.
The Differences
I’m more popular as a Rise artist?
So, as I said, I spent 5 years making a Pokemon comic and 1 year creating a bunch of Rise comics. And yet I think I got more (or at least the same number of) viewers on my Rise comics in that one year than on my Pokemon comics in 5 years. I certainly got a similar number of followers, despite the differences in time. One of the main reasons for this is likely due to the social media platforms I posted on. I posted “Liberty” on deviantart and on the Pokemon Nuzlocke forums, the latter being particularly niche. As for my Rise comics and artwork, I branched out to other sites including here on Tumblr, Instagram, AO3, and Twitter (though insta got fewer comics due to the image size restrictions). The number and popularity of the sites I posted Rise artwork to are more than deviantart and that is likely a big reason. The other reasons for my increase in popularity may be for some of the other differences...
There aren’t that many comic artists in the TMNT fandom
I could probably name only a handful of consistent comic creators in, not only the Rise fandom, but in the TMNT fandom. And I mean the long-running, over-arching story type of comic creators. There aren’t that many of us. There are tons of artists and fanfic writers out there, yes, but very few that combine the two.
Meanwhile the Pokemon community has TONS. Especially the nuzlocke community. Heck, the Pokemon nuzlocke community started and was named because of a popular comic detailing the events of the creator’s nuzlocke challenge playthrough of Pokemon Emerald. You get a little bit more lost in the crowd amongst so many other comic artists in the Pokemon community, but at the same time have more people to learn from and relate to in that way.
My involvement with the Fandoms has been different
There’s been a lot of collaboration and working together among creators within each respective fandom. I feel like personally, a lot of my collabs with Rise creators has been a lot more direct and more personal than the kind of things I did in the Pokemon fandom.
For example, in the Pokemon comic fandom, it was really common to cameo each others’ characters in your comic, or include each others’ comics or characters in memes. This wasn’t always a planned thing, though we would ask each other for permission. I joined a Pokemon comic discord, but most of my interactions there and on other platforms involved brainstorming help. Not only that, but sometimes the community was a bit more competitive as well. For instance the Nuzlocke Forums would hold an “extravaganza” every year where folks voted on various categories to vote for the best nuzlocke (I won “Best Pokemon” and “Most improved” in 2018 :3 ).
Meanwhile with the Rise fandom, I did more things like art trades, collaborative art pieces, and zine work. These were a lot more direct and planned out and involved a bit more trust and interaction with other artists. I also became close friends with the folks in the discords that I joined as part of a Rise server, beyond just “fellow creator”.
As a result, I found myself doing a lot more serious artwork and even created other fics for the Rise fandom beyond just my comics, while when it came to Pokemon I stuck mainly to my “Liberty” art/comics.
More eyes, less interaction and visa versa
Again, this could be mainly a differences in what social media I’m using, but a big difference I found between readers of my work is that I got A LOT more people commenting on my Pokemon comic than on my Rise comics. I may be getting more views on my TMNT comics, but boy did I get more interaction with my Pokemon comics. I would get at least 5 people leaving these in-depth analysis or guesses of what would happen on each page for my Pokemon comic, not to mention the dozens of other reactions I would get in the comments. And despite that comic being on hiatus for a year, I still get some comments on it!
So, unless I know the commenter personally, I feel a little less involved with my readership with my Rise comics than my Pokemon one. Which is a little sad. I do appreciate you all who appreciate my work, but I feel like I appreciate you from afar and can only go “awww” at the things y’all leave in the notes or on the anonymous asks I get, instead of being able to thank you more directly.
Rise readers are a bit less patient
I get lots more people asking me “when the next page is coming” on my Rise comics and fics much more often than on my Pokemon comic. This virtually never happened with my Pokemon comic. Granted, I was way more consistent with “Liberty” and it had a set schedule, whereas my Rise comics/fanfics never have. But still.
I really DO NOT like those kinds of asks/comments. Please do not ask me when the next one is coming out. It makes me feel stressed and ashamed and pressured, which can create negative feelings around my work and make me less likely to finish them. I get that you’re excited, and that’s cool. But literally no one likes those kinds of comments.
For perspective, “Liberty”, my Pokemon comic, has been on hiatus for nearly a year and I’ve gotten maybe two comments to that effect, and they were newer readers who weren’t around at the time that I announced my hiatus and the reasons thereof. My “Liberty” readers have been so patient with me (bless them), and I feel a real loyalty to that kind of readership. I don’t know when, yet, but I really want to get back to “Liberty” someday, not just for myself or that story that I lovingly crafted, but also for them.
Pokemon was a hobby, Rise is a passion
Likely due to the fact that I have made a lot of close friends within the Rise community, and the fact that it has helped me immensely through this really tough year, I feel so much closer with the Rise creator community. Pokemon was a thing that I did for fun as a side hobby. My TMNT related comics and art have pushed me so much further in my art, gotten me involved in various projects, gotten me into creating animations, holy heck was I sucked into this fandom in such a short amount of time, and I love it so much.
I have been a fan of Pokemon since I was a kid, and I never thought I’d find a piece of media that would capture my attention and adoration as much. I think at a point when I was shifting from the Pokemon to the Rise fandom I said something along the lines of “I feel like I’m cheating on Pokemon with Rise”/j but it’s kinda true, haha!
In the end, both fandoms and the people in them mean a lot to me, and I’ve grown a lot from them as an artist and a person. I will be forever grateful to the other creators, readers, artists, writers, friends, collaborators, etc in both.
Thank you all very much!

your comics are really big inspirations of mine! what are some of your favorite nuzcomics?
Thank you! I’ll do my best to remember some of them... I tend to keep comics I like very close to me. But new, more recent stories may have slipped past my radar. I don’t frequent Deviantart much since the Eclipse site rolled over and that’s where most Nuzlockes still publish. But! I can talk about comics all day: Chamerion by Emilianite on Deviantart is one I often return to. It’s a more experimental style Plantinum run and has no written dialogue at all. I love the concept of this comic a lot and it is gorgeously illustrated. Its last update was around July last year, so I’m not sure if it’s on hiatus or will be tied up later in life. But I thoroughly enjoy what’s already there.
Every time I do chance to log on and spy a Finding Your Roots update I’m always charmed! By SaltnPepperBunny on Deviantart. I think the concepts presented in this are extremely well woven around the actual in-game content. The thought that I can see going behind all of the choices for how individual pokemon live with and around family is very intriguing. (I also just love Cedar) It’s also, extremely pleasantly, one of those comics (as nuzlockes often are) that grow up with you. I love seeing people’s art and writing change through their updates. (and I’m extremely impressed by the dedication to such consistent updates)
Burn Away of course by JustSnooze!  Really really gorgeous art and depictions of pokemon moves in battle. Extremely endearing well-written characters that remain consistent. It’s clear that Snooze has thought a lot about the strings of this comic, each of the major plot points and upsets are coming perfectly tied with ribbons that we’re all pinning up to complete our Pepe Silvia style cosplay. Also Whata can I say I lova big tits
It’s both incomplete and now disappeared from the internet but Alexa Sharpe’s old comic “Alexial's Emerald comic” (Cocoaferret on Deviantart (now deactivated)) was incredibly inspiring! It was lavishly drafted and every expression was nail-on-the-head perfect. I’ve followed her since then (around 2015??) and have a zine or two from her! I continue to love her work and storytelling. I’d highly suggest checking her out if you’re into the macabre, or just like visual storytelling.
Tales of Sinnoh from Ky-nim! A real classic, I can’t tell you how many times I reread this as it was coming out (I actually have almost an entire Hoenn run drafted in a really old sketchbook that I did because I thought this run was so funny) I was around in 2011 for some of the first pages, and I followed it all the way through Myths of Unova! Face of a generation...
Elkken’s Knell and Spaceriot’s Champion’s Mercy! I put them together because both of the authors are peers that I’ve dearly watched grow with their respective comics. It feels really good to read comics like these and feel people getting bolder and more confident in their skills. And in this house we love my 2 special boys!! (Alrune and Axel!!)
French-teapot’s Fire Red Nuzlocke! I love French’s stuff. Funny! So funny! Good writing! And the character designs and draftsmanship in the most recent pages...to die for!! Very sleek style with great control of form.
There are a few additional comics I can vaguely recall having liked a great deal. But they’re either too long on hiatus for me to find, or they’ve been completely removed and I can’t remember their authors well enough to sniff out what they’re doing nowadays. I hope I introduced you to some! Nuzlockes are fun!
