➳ notes: i don’t know where i got this idea from, it popped into my head and i looked at the list of characters i write for and thought that this worked the best for the free! cast. also, i can’t imagine any of them NOT crying?? maybe to varying degrees, but they’d all shed a tear or a thousand

he almost got teary just seeing you for the first time

but he managed for the ceremony

as for in between the ceremony and reception?

don’t worry about it :))

but it’s a happy sob

he’s definitely yelling to himself how happy he is about marrying you

and as private as he wanted this moment to be, everyone CAN hear him

he is a very loud man

everyone doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing

but one can assume he’s jumping up and down like a kid

he didn’t imagine this would ever happen

so this still feels kinda like a dream

only until the wedding finished

he’s 100% embarrassed he’s crying over this

and he’s 100% glad that he did cry the day after

i say that as if he would be able to control it

he would wrap you in such a tight hug and cry into your shoulder

but he wouldn’t ruin your outfit, he can wait until you get home and can finally go to bed

he woke up and chose tears

it has been 3 minutes after waking up

cried through the entire ceremony

but survived well enough

he can’t give a speech at the reception though

he’s hopeless

hides his face in the paper he wrote his speech on and got it wet ._.

and then he went right back to being a mess

and the words ‘ i now pronounce you’

the rest of that sentence was a blur because he just dove in to kiss you

probably cried about the wedding for the rest of the week

after the vows and everything he was fine though

that night when you went to bed he wasn’t

You weren’t unfamiliar with the current feeling you were having but it still sucked nonetheless. You’ve been having a bad day, week, month, basically it’s just been sucky. One of your preferred ways of coping was just to cry, sometimes with your sad playlist to get it flowing. Basically, let it all out with a good cry and hope it gets better. You were fine to cry alone, if anything it was better that no one had to see you like this. You could ugly cry all you wanted and not have to be perceived. But both fortunately and unfortunately your boyfriend came home a few hours early. He was supposed to be out for work until early tomorrow morning but he wanted to see you and surprise you by coming the night before, albeit late at night. He called out your name happily to locate you within your shared home. You trust him so when you heard him you didn’t feel the need to hide or pretend you weren’t crying. You called out his name to signal you were in your room and immediately he could tell something was off. Your voice was hoarse and cracked and so he quickly put down his stuff to speed walk over to you. When he opened the door and saw you crying he immediately rushed to you to envelop you in a hug. “Baby what’s wrong?” he said with a slight pout and concern in his eyes. He loved you so much and just wanted to make you smile and happy, he knew that emotions were normal and that having a good cry is good, he even does it himself sometimes heh. But he hates to see you cry, it breaks his heart a bit. He ushers you to the bed so you can both sit and hug comfortably. You tell him that it’s just been a lot and you rant a bit about your troubles. You don’t say a lot but he doesn’t need to hear the details to know how you feel and how to comfort you. “I’m so sorry darling. Listen, I love you so much and I’m sorry you have to go through this right now. I wish I could take this all away for you and maybe I can’t but I know that I can try my hardest to try and help. You’re such a sweetheart and a gentle soul and you deserve the world.” He gives you forehead kisses as he wipes your tears with a tissue he grabbed from your table. He hugs you tight as you ugly cry a little from his words. “You’re doing amazing, darling. You’re always doing your best and I hope you never forget that. You’ve told me so much about you and your past and I hope you know how strong you are.” He strokes your hair and your back as he says this. You feel his heartbeat, his body, and the vibrations of his voice against you as he speaks. “Let it out, we’ll get you a snack, and we’ll sleep, you can deal with whatever else tomorrow. For tonight please just rest, you always work so hard.” You pull back to give him a small nod. He smiles at how cute you are even while crying and gives you a long, reassuring kiss. He cups your face with his hands and wipes your tears a bit with his thumbs. You both pull back and you croak out “I’m sorry that you had to come back just to worry about me and comfort me.” “You always take such good care of me, this is the least I can do. Let me know how else I can help support you. If you need more hugs, kisses, reassurance, or anything at all, just tell me. Okay?” He says warmly, smiling at you with soft adoration in his eyes. You nod again as tears flow out because he’s treating you so sweetly. “Thank you… I love you so much and I appreciate you,” you say, half crying, as you kiss him. “No need to thank me baby. I love you so much too.” You sit with your foreheads pressed together for a bit as you finish crying. “Let’s get you a snack sweetheart,” he says while standing up and offering you his hand. You nod and smile.

He holds your hand all the way to the kitchen and it makes you giggle and your heart flutter. He makes you both cups of your favorite tea but decaf because you need to sleep! He grabs you some of your shared collection of snacks and you head back to the bed. You finish your tea together while chatting about his recent work/mission and you both feel warm from the tea and also just from each other. You put down your cups and lay down to cuddle. He turns the lights off and wraps his arms around you. He lays on his back to let you sleep on his chest with one arm around you and the free one brushing through your hair. “I love you so much. Never forget that. I hope that you also love yourself as much as I love you because you deserve it. If you can’t right now, that’s okay, we’ll do it together, slowly.” You share a few more kisses as you tell him you love him too, that you’ll definitely try, and that you hope he loves himself like that too. Your hearts are full as you drift into sleep together. Maybe the future will be nice, but even if it isn’t, it doesn’t matter. You’ll always have him and he’ll always have you. He’s given you the power to love yourself and you’ve given the same back. Life will inevitably get hard but you feel like that you might just be able to face it because you’re not alone. You both doze off into the night, smiling in each other's embrace.

NOTES (YES I KNOW THEY CAN’T TALK LOL HERE ARE MY EXPLANATIONS) NOTE 1: personal headcanon that will be in Inumaki’s own fic eventually: Inumaki learned to not funnel cursed energy into his speech for short periods of time and he uses it for when you really need to hear his voice, you can also help him suppress the cursed energy by blocking it with yours by mentally aiming it at his throat. NOTE 2: since this is for heartsteel Aphelios (because I haven’t researched regular Aphelios’s lore enough yet) it seems that he can still talk, he just chooses not to. He lost his ability to sing but I haven’t found anything that says he can’t speak or use his vocal chords. In game, he still has the ability to yell or grunt when he’s attacking or even doing his emotes. I just headcanon that he doesn’t like how his voice sounds after losing his singing voice (even though you reassure him he really does sound the same) and it also strains him to speak for too long. But, he will speak to you commonly in short bursts, or will speak when you need to hear him.

SERIOUS S/O BURSTS OUT LAUGHING | Samezuka

Rin:

I'm fully covinced that embarrassing Rin's hilarious, and so easy that this all takes place relatively early in the relationship.

So before that I imagine Rin just casually knew you because you tagged along with the Iwatobis to the competitions and training with Gou.

And you reminded him of Haru, serious and stoic, but more talkative. Constantly making him laugh when he heard you teasing someone else over something stupid they did.

You both could talk about deep stuff and have conversations in different languages.

Slowly he started falling in love and miraculously enough he manged to ask you out without passing out of embarrassment.

But you still had him wrapped around your finger.

And at some point things will get hectic because life of a professional athelete do be like that. Probably training got delayed and he was late for a date with you so he went for a rose to give you as an apology.

But he was running through the park where he was supposed to meet you and while waited for you to appear a cat snatches the rose and he starts tugging it to get it back.

Needless to say the poor flower is torn apart when you do show up.

He hides the little botanic vitcim behind him red in the faces and can't form a coherent sentence he's so flustered.

And he hears it.

You start laughing and he looses it.

He will hide his face in his hoodie cap tugging it to cover more of his face. Which only makes you laugh more.

It's a vicious cycle of embarrassment and giggles.

But truthfully, he wouldn't change it for the world.

Sousuke:

Sousuke is a serious guy for the most part.

So he is not particularly pushy about making you laugh.

Most of your relationships is pretty chill and not over the top as it'd be one with let's say Nagisa, Kisumi or Asahi.

Sousuke jokes around and is charismatic but he's pretty calm.

You often hang out with Sousuke in his rehab training and help him do some of his excercises.

You love talking to each other and are very much happy around each other.

But it isn't until one day Momo convinced Nitori to do a little Tokyo escaped with the Iwatobi guys since Rin was going to be in town... meaning the whole Swimming nerds crew would be reunited.

It was a rare opportunity you couldn't pass, so you skipped classes to reschedule his training earlier.

Everyone is reunited and they're having a great time.

They started teasing him and mocking him.

Among those things they went over funny stupid things he'd do as a child.

He's embarrassed and considering to leave when he hears you laughing at a story Rin told him.

It's such a pretty laugh and heartfelt.

He melts and decided leaving is not so bad being a little bit embarrassed if he can hear you laughing like that.

Clearly, he had to balance things out telling stuff about you.

And definitely he will make sure to tell you more fun stuff about his childhood if it means to make you laugh more.

Nitori:

He's not funny, he's not the kind of guy that makes other laugh.

But he's adorably ease to tease.

Which is why he hadn't invited you to visit you during his trainings or whenever Momo was around.

But today you showed up unannounced trying to surprise him.

He goes pale that you almost feel bad.

But he just knows what will happen.

All the guys are over you, specially when they know your their smol bean of a captain's sweetheart.

Trying to mess with him and you for being together.

Nitori is so flustered is adorable that he lets out the loudest screech to send them to work.

But you start giggling at him and everyone else finds it hilarious.

He's too flustered about it and just whines about it.

Momo:

Momo is hyperactive and cute. But he's more annoying than funny.

You particularly didn't seem to find him as either.

In one hand, you didn't get mad at him

On the other he never saw you laugh.

He was dead set on it, he is a cinnamon roll and always asks you about it

He is such a hyper bean.

One day you tag along with him to a joint meeting with the Iwatobi guys and you chat with Gou and Ayumu.

They start going about how obssessed he was with Gou and all the times she'd say his name wrong.

Momo experiences stress for the first time thinking you'd get mad.

He's an opening mouth away from going on a ramble about how that's the past and he only has eyes for you and only you.

But he's surprised to see you burst out laughing about how ridiculous he was and the whole name mix-up.

He feels like the luckiest guy in the world, not only for his sweetheart being so sweet and understanding, but also that laugh??? Is. So Precious?!??!?!

Seijuro:

He's always so determined and stubborn.

So making you laugh is his goal. But he doesn't play dirty.

He wants to be intentionally be funny enough to make you laugh.

He's a sweetheart but just like his brother: hyperactive, not funny.

So he tries to be amusing another way.

One time he asks you to meet you by the pool and you arrive a bit early so he's still at the pool.

And look, my man is a devoted swimmer but not as devoted as he is to his darling (and he's very devoted to swimming).

He's just so excited to see you he rushes out of the pool and he runs to greet you and carry you in his arms still dripping wet.

Your response is the cutest nervous stream of giggles.

He gets even more excited that he makes you spin around and fill you with smooches until the coach scolds him and send him back to the pool.

HE IS A DRAMA QUEEN.

Sometimes it’s hard to take him seriously when he’s like this, he’d be more over the teasing side, but he’d poke around you not wanting to be with him anymore and wanting to be with that barista guy in the coffee shop you visit frequently.

Sometimes, you’d play along, until you can literally see him tear up.

Then, you’d decide that it’s enough and you’d pull him in for a hug.

He’s dumb, he can’t see how beautiful he is, can he?

You’ll make sure he knows he’s your one and only. Then, he’ll tease you back with how much you love him.

Nitori

He is a sweetheart, he’d be so heartbroken when he sees you talking to your tall classmate.

He’d start wondering if you’d like him better if he was taller or stronger, or if his eyes were darker. He’d change his haircut if that meant youd like him better.

Nitori’s eyes would look glossy when you come closer to him after noticing him by the door.

You’d hug him and kiss his cheek, he’d shyly ask if you dont mind him not being that tall.

You laugh it of softly, “No, Ai, you’re perfect like this”, wrapping your arms around him.

You’d feel him relax in your arms and blink back a few tears.

Momo

He might feel his world is falling apart.

Momo would very likely make a scene and sob when he thinks you like someone other than him a lot more.

He’d talk to you about it though.

You’d explain that it’s nothing like that and that this person was just borrowing something from you.

He’d wait until you give him a forehead kiss to stop his sobbing.

Then, Momo would take you to get some ice cream.

Sousuke

He’s a bit harsh and erratic when he’s not thinking straight.

Sousuke wouldn’t want to hurt you in anyway, but if you try to talk about it at the wrong place and time, it could turn into a fight (depending on how you both handle it of course). He can be very explosive.

He would never attack you in anyway, but he’d want to pull himself out of any interaction with anyone for a bit to cool off.

If you leave him alone to think, from the begining, he’ll calm down and come back in a few minutes. He’ll hug you and tell you how much he loves you.

But on the few days where he’s a bit more difficult to handle, if you try to push him into telling him what’s wrong he might snap. He’d be dumb and say something that he doesn’t mean.

He’d then come back and try to explain what was happening through his mind.

He is 100% not good with “negative” feelings, but he will fight back really hard to show he’s very sorry.

Seijuro

Honestly, Seijuro is pretty cool about it. Like, yeah, sure, he does get jealous, because it kinda happens to a lot of us. But he’s mature enough to not make a scene about it (probably not like Momo, for example).

He’d try to not address his feeling though, at first, because he doesn’t want to make a big deal about it, until you feel he’s a bit more quiet.

Seijuro will then explain to you how he feels, he’ll be very clear in the fact that there’s nothing wrong with you and that he should just probably reflect on his feelings for a bit.

You could try to validate his feeling or just let him deal with it by himself, but if you try to talk it out with him, he’ll feel a lot better with the situation and himself.

characters: samezuka & iwatobi swim teams + siri ofc {slight y/n x sousuke}

samezuka's manager!y/n: as a second year

so! it's your second year as the swim team's manager (but you're a third year now)

right so rin for no reason at all drags you to his extra practice sessions, and that's where you meet kou

when the main desk tells her to find her brother at the pool, she enters to find him splashing at some random girl (hehe that's you)

you're both laughing at something he's said, she watches as you stand to hand him a water bottle and caution this dehydrated mess to not push himself too much

you're making a few minor modifications to uozumi's training regiment in the club room when kou asks rin about you

"who, (y/n)? haha yeah she followed me here"

bITCH-

N E WAYS so ofc kou misunderstands, so congrats now all of iwatobi swim knows you as rin's girlfriend

everyone is dying to meet you, neither you nor rin know why, and the meeting is set at the iwatobi swim club

you were curious about this haru character, who apparently had been your best friend's inspiration on more than one occasion

now, haru did strip the moment he saw water, but the entire iwatobi team jumped into some sort of practiced formation between him and the pool, fight stances and all, until he introduced himself to you and made some conversation

it's wasn't until tachibana said "you're doing great, haru" did you realise who he reminded you of, nitori

you almost adopted hazuki the moment you saw him

ryuugazaki was something else entirely - infact, he was the one to let the girlfriend thing slip

now the iwatobi boys + kou are mAD that y'all are just friends because they ship

when you get back to school, though...

ohhhhh your eyes have been opened

it's been a year since uozumi first approached you with the request to become samezuka's swim manager, so it's spring again, aka the boys are frightened as hell

mikoshiba hasn't left for hidaka uni yet

you're putting two and two together: it's time for the Spring Training from Hell

yeah this is why they were looking for a therapist manager

you underestimated seijuro mikoshiba's determination to make samezuka the bestestest team but he just sent you the training regiments and ohoholy shit you stand corrected

the team is practically dEAD after first day

iwashimizu's legs were so shaky mans fell back into the pool lmfaooo

you've never seen such raw terror in rin's eyes

uozumi has to literally crawl to the showers

sei seems to be pushing nakagawa especially hard, which you find a bit strange

poor thing accidentally waltzed into the girl's dormatories instead of the boys', where he got beat up some more

you're sure you'll have to put up shrine another next to riono's by the end of this training for mizutani, who is currently undergoing what seems to be multiple existential crises

yeah, only sei can come up w such a program

oh!! and riono has actually started coming to practices now you won't remove the shrine tho

it's a a bit difficult to see much improvement since they're exhausted and complaining all the time, but mikoshiba knows you might just kill him for torturing your boys uselessly

fourteen hellish practices later, all of you are finally at the station to see your former captain off cue the waterworks

the next day, you take the entire team to the hot springs as compensation for all the torture

congrats, your dead team has been revived

as they gradually return to their 100% after a few days, you are blown away

there's a drastic improvement in everyone, the new times are off the charts

ajajavsvajaks you're crying proud mom tears

when they see everyone's progress in the little charts you've made, the guys are overjoyed enough to crush you in a group hug

they've got their own surprise waiting, though, because-

"well, if we've got eight first years," you're telling captain matsuoka, "then i suppose the initial placement shouldn't take longer than two- holy fuck"

and from the showers enters possibly the finest man you've ever seen - ofc rin follows your line of sight before grinning evilly

"his name's sousuke yamazaki," he tells you, definitely mistaking your surprise, "he's got the perfect swimmer's physique, no?"

this is not real, he is not real, there is no way a literal god is on samezuka's swim team pls-

"(y/n), right?" he's holding out a hand for you to shake

you accept it, taking a cautious step back

ofc rin the dumbass decides to stick his nose into your business "you look red"

you could never commit homicide infront of nitori, but trust me that was the closest you'd ever gotten to it

"i-it's probably the cold i had yesterday"

he doesn't get the chance to reply to you though, because the three stooges mizutani, nakagawa and riono yell for you from the other side of the pool

you spot uozumi smacking them upside the head and decide it's time to intervene, waving rin and yamazaki goodbye

"and you're the only best trainor in this school for that" nakagawa adds nervously

kazuki smiles dryly from behind them, him an uozumi placing one hand on either of their heads as they force the three into a bow "try again"

you accept the boys' request, of course, and give them three days to write you a list of their goals - what they want to achieve to win nationals

it takes you some time, but you manage to whip out a near perfect training regiment for all three of them + one for rin (which he had to beg for, obviously)

you trust seijuro, both as a talented alum and a friend - he'd always had a talent for finding talent, if that made sense - and the way he pushed nakagawa, mizutani, and riono during the training, he must've known they could get to nationals

the regiment is definitely hard, and there's a lot of groans and sighs

it seems to be a year of miracles, though, because there isn't a word of complaint from anyone after that

sousuke shakes his head to dispel the weird thoughts - you're rin's best friend, after all, shark boy would murder yamazaki in two secs flat

you're still staring at him, he notices, eyes a bit blown and your mouth parted

sousuke doesn't know much about you, other than as the hard-working manager the entire team considers godsent

he thinks he'd like to though -- he's always been attracted to passionate people, and you've done so much for his friends

yeah, not helping

"...will you really?" you're asking

he finds himself nodding before he can truly think of the consequences

you spend the day with sousuke as he guides you through the problems with more patience and skill than you'd initially credited him with

yeah, it's weird and exciting to have someone other than madoka and rin in your dorm, especially mr sex on legs here, but it's also oddly...intimate?

you never noticed before, but when you're not too busy staring, yamazaki's presence is extremely calming

you feel your tension about the test melt away as you listen to him (trying to) crack physics jokes to help you remember the material (they're terrible, but he's stuttering and utterly embarrassed, so you're laughing for his sake)

once your test is over, as promised, you take rin out to dinner to your favorite street food place

y'all break into visit iwatobi sc after - which in hindsight, was a mistake

his jovial personality dissipated the moment you jumped through the windows walked through the doors, with you having to elbow him to break whatever stupor he was under

it's like you're on the bus back from nationals last year, you're sensing that same vulnerability from him, as if he wants to spill but is holding back

he folds up his jeans legs and digs his feet into the water, with you following suit

you rest your head on his shoulder "what're you all mopey for? i'm the one who probably just failed a test"

the silence is deafening in the moments before he speaks "you know i used to swim here with haru and the guys, right?"

"mhm" ohoho here it comes

"but i went to australia, and..."

ohhhh so that's what this is about

you scoot away from rin to turn towards him, eyes set in determination "that isn't going to happen again, rin. you arent a quitter. the fact that you're even swimming at all proves it. haru, tachibana, sousuke, me- we're all so proud of you for going after what you love. you're smarter than you were then, and besides, if you return all emo and rude i will personally take responsibility to whip you back into shape"

ok in his defense, he tried, but it's rin after all, he's sobbing

he flicks your forehead before habitually bringing down his cap to shield his eyes from your vision

"it's not a bad thing to dedicate yourself to your goal, rin" you mention offhandedly, laying back on your elbows with your feet still in the freezing water, "but you gotta know that your friends will always be here. so you go on ahead and chase that dream, kay?"

he sniffles, glancing down at the water before turning to you with a large, teary grin "i will"

since samezuka has a two-day break coming up, and so does iwatobi, you and nagisa plan a movie night for both teams

the invitations are all sent, the day has come, the snacks are here, there's enough seating, and the blankets and comforters are set

it's rin, uozumi, minami, nitori, momo and riono from samezuka + the iwatobi team (at Haru's place after a little mackerel bribe) and everything's perfect, minus one lil problem: no one chose a movie

right off the bat ryuugazaki suggests a documentary, to which minami eagerly nods, adding, "i just watched one on bioluminescent algae and their affect on the-"

poor bby stops short at nagisa's horrified expression

riono raises his hand this dork "how about a marvel movie?"

"THEY KILLED TONY HOW ABOUT NO??" (that's momo)

nagisa grabs his chance "horror?"

kou shrieks

oh wait no, that was tachibana

let the games begin it's an all out war, tachibana is challenging nagisa to a game of rock paper scissors, ryuugazaki is cutting little voting ballots like the cute lawful good child he is

you're sitting in the midst of the chaos, with your back against the couch

sousuke, on the couch behind you, taps your shoulder before pointing towards haru

only then do you notice rin instigating ryuugazaki and nagisa's argument as a distraction as haru puts on a-

oh.

the boys settle down as a romantic comedy opens

the movie's a modern hades x peresphone retelling, where peresphone is a college student who recieves a a marriage proposal from the god of the underworld

sousuke is correcting all the greek mythology the movie gets wrong

and accidentally spoils some of the plot oof

nagisa has tried (and failed) several times to choke the aforementioned swimmer

there's a scene where peresphone is teaching her fiance the art of grocery shopping, and haru (has the remote) pauses and rewinds it for an entire half hour to try and find mackerel in the seafood section

momo ends up jumping haru for the remote

is also terrible with it, he's either got the volume horrifically high or a pitch below human hearing

you clipboard him obviously, and as it goes flying, ryuugazaki catches the remote

he's normal, thankfully

sousuke is about to spoil comment on the plot twist when he glances at the group - everyone is... asleep??

nitori is squished between him and rin, with rin and tachibana flanking haru. uozumi is sprawled across the floor with minami, both of them starfishing. ryuugazaki sits at tachibana's feet on the ground with nagisa snoring on his shoulder. nakagawa is curled up on the floor with his hands under his head aww

swimmer boi's breath catches when he sees you passed out, your back against his legs with your head resting in his lap -- your hand lays on the shoulder of your adorable beetle-raising kouhai, who's snoring away softly in your lap

shit shit shit he's a secret physics nerd but physics class didn't teach him how to Girls

he's 100% unprepared for the way you smile in your sleep and 100% freaking out

yeah knowing you you're probably dreaming of clipboarding someone, but that grin is driving him inSANE

sousuke can't help but almost coo you back to sleep when you stir - and he takes some pics of everyone as well, to send on the group as blackmail material he's such a tsundere ajgajabasvs

he's literally terrified at the thought of accidentally waking you up, and the ground is soft enough, but...

when you wake up and find yourself all comfy on the couch and he's on the floor, he tells you that in your sleepy state, you requested to switch spots as it was getting uncomfortable

lmfaoooo this ain't an exposé i won't be doing my boy sousuke dirty like that but look at you being all oblivious 😌😌

yeah movie nights with iwatobi are a monthly thing now

ever since he aCciDeNtAly sent you guys his schedule, facetiming sei whenever he's free is a part of your routine, he prefers it if it's you calling him while the guys practice

being there during samezuka's practice, even digitally, makes sei so nostalgic and he gets this really s o f t smile it's actually adorable

walking siri (minami's huge cuddly doggie) is a daily ritual, the entire teams walks around the campus in the evening with him no matter what

you're able to introduce madoka to the team about halfway through the year, poor thing was so intimidated in the beginning - she overcomes it quicker than you did, though, mostly because she sees how dorky they are with you

also the boys' training is coming along great, their times are improving faster than you'd imagined - you're celebrating nitori's new time in fact, he's just broken iwashimizu's record when rin enters with the results

nakagawa (freestyle), mizutani (breaststroke), riono (freestyle), rin (freestyle), and minami (butterfly) have all made it in their individual strokes, with momo, nitori, rin and sousuke for medley relay

all four of you - riono, mizutani, nakagawa and you - are silent as everyone applauds

your eyes are tearing up as you remember all the hard work your idiots put in, the late practices, the strict menus, the exercise routines, how they went around taking advice from you, from rin, from coach sasabe...and their gradual but well deserved improvements

ok but you literally would've been pancaked when riono (5"11'), nakagawa (5"10') and mizutani (5"11') pounced on you for a group hug had sousuke (6"1') not been in the way 😌

regionals arrive before you know it, and the next thing you know, iwashimizu is pushing you into the seat next to sousuke on the bus

(nitori called dibs on rin, he's still mad you sat with him last tournament 😭😭)

also did this mans sousuke just...flinch? when you smiled at him??

he's back to his regular form in no time, quick enough for you to doubt you'd seen anything at all - wait, huh? you've been working with athletes who have to keep their bodies in pristine condition for about two years now, you've taken sports med classes, so it's near impossible for you to miss it

"dont slouch" you reprimand, causing the flustered third year to straighten up, alarmed - yeah. that does it for you, he definitely wasn't slouching, it's more like...it's more like his body tended to lean towards his right, almost as if he'd tried not to pressure his left side long enough for it to become a subconscious habit

you remember rin mentioning something about sousuke skipping practice, too

the team jumps into the practice pool, and its events don't exactly do much to calm you

rin is giving you a look you don't even need to decipher - there's something up with sousuke, and he isn't the type of person to just come out and mention it if anything were the matter

you follow your captain's word and ask minami to check the boys' showers for you. there's someone in there, minami tells you, so you wait in the locker room with sousuke's favorite drink

out of the shower, sousuke doesn't cover up his shoulder fast enough - he can't even look you in the eyes, to see your disappointment, the anger for him hiding something like this...he doesn't think he can bear it

you open the drink, knowing his answer, before asking if he'd like it. sousuke smiles a bit at that, before asking why you're not watching everyone else's races

"may i see your shoulder?" you ask instead, and he tells you to return to the rest of the group

the deja vu is hella strong, and you're kneeling on the ground with sousuke on the bench, a hand on his knee "the way rin couldn't get out of the pool last year, you saw that tournament, right? would you have left his side, sousuke? if you were on samezuka then?"

"of course not" is his immediate reply, and you give him a pointed look

that was the last time you'd ever fail to notice that a friend of yours needed help, you had promised yourself, but a year later, you're back at square one, with possibly one of the strongest guys you've ever met in front of you, his hands shaking

you grab them, not knowing what else to do to stop the trembling, before asking, "why? that injury isn't new, why would you sign up for a race like this? what's going on sousuke?"

and he spills

there's no strong front to keep in front of you, he knows, and by the end of it all there is a raw quality to his voice, reliving his past years, bringing those words out couldn't have been easy, but he's hopeful

you could laugh, even, he's hopeful after all that, enthusiastic as he shares with you his new dream

you're bawling your eyes out and his cheeks are flushed but he feels lighter somehow, finally understanding what people mean when they say that talking is therapeutic

you're deciding whether or not it would be fair to ask him not to swim - this new sousuke, who's gladly ready to finish the relay knowing it'll be his final race is intimidatingly calm - when rin enters

taking your leave, you're not entirely surprised when the medley relay is announced, and all four of your boys stand in line

whether they won or lose didn't matter - hell, you hadn't even glanced at the scoreboard - because it was the most spectacular relay you've ever seen, and you're proud beyond words

did i mention how all of samezuka kept getting glares from the other schools? yeah not only do you guys have a) amazing swimmers but also b) not one, but two godlike managers?!? this has to be illegal??

regionals have a calming effect on the team, even the first years are much more confident in themselves, and there's this silent drive to push forward and get even stronger for nationals

as rin, mizutani, and riono practice for their big moment, you accompany sousuke for one of his appointments, and on your way back, you guys stop by your place and spend hours making yummy (healthy) snacks for everyone

by the time nationals come by, madoka empties her schedule to join you guys - you, momo, sousuke and madoka are sitting in the last four seats (ahjaabs nitori called rin again 😌)

you're going to watch riono, mizutani and rin race as they're the only ones who've made it

oh, speaking of whom, nitori is moping again because it's Rin Is MIA Before A Competition 2.0

your ever responsible, exemplary team captain shows up in the nick of time - and when you ask where he's been (the competitors get a one week club break instead of two, so they've got time to practice), he answers "australia", and you honestly Do Not have the time or energy to try and make sense of that anymore

y'all end up with two wins under your belts, which is a huge step for nationals

sei shows up to cheer for the team as well - you hadn't been able to catch him at regionals - so he's well prepared for the way the team pounces on him

all in all, madoka is satisfied with her experience, you met a beloved alum, rin and riono are getting hounded by scouts, sousuke is looking genuinely happier, the team is totally motivated for next year - it's a win for you

it's actually iwashimizu who reminds everyone about your annual team picnic this year

the whole team pays their respects at riono's shrine ("WILL YOU PRETEND I'M INVISIBLE AGAIN??!? NO PLS YOU GUYS-") before heading off to the site - it's a lakeside this time - and y'all start by assigning bbq duty (literally uozumi and sousuke are the only ones who can cook akabajaks)

there's beach volleyball, fetch with siri, you even planned a bunch of water games but!! the guys literally just race each other the entire time ://, and somewhere between all of that these dumbasses riono and nakagawa manage to go missing

there's this big ass forest surrounding your bbq site and you guys separate into two groups - the first and second years go off to find the two while the third years + madoka watch the site in case they return

now that was fine until an hour passed and no one was back, so you guys take siri and set off as well - the forest is much bigger and more confusing than y'all thought, and your team of four (rin, you, sou and madoka) don't seem to be equipped with survival instincts

you guys run into the first and second years in about half an hour, thankfully, because somehow momo has the most woodsy knowledge than anyone in the group - they still hadn't found the boys though

so here we have a group of about 17 people, walking around the trees aimlessly - it's been another hour, and you're sure if riono and nakagawa haven't been found, they're either a) dead or b) dying

welp, who are you guys to meddle with fate amirite?

especially when there's such an amazing bbq waiting

riono and nakagawa are playing badminton at the site when y'all are back - they'd spent some time at a nearby river because apparently this is a usual picnic spot for their families??

"and you didn't think? to mention this to anyone??"

"we did mention it!!" nakagawa protests "to iwashimizu!"

y'all turn to the man in question (who is found sleeping in the bus) "o-oops?"

iwashimizu has about eight popsicles slipped down his shirt that day

you someone mixes salt into his beloved vanilla milkshake

the team, to your surprise, pulls up with a whole ass cake at the end of day, because rather than being sad for your leave, they've decided to cherish and celebrate the amazing year/s their upperclass(wo)men gave them (minami's words), you can't deny that this team has done a lot for you

10/10 experience would recommend
