Nier had invited you for dinner with him and Yonah at their place tonight, after things seemed to have finally started to calm down after defeating the Shadowlord and.... everything, really. You had been really looking forward to sitting down over a warm meal with them in peace... that is, until Yonah insisted on having you all try her new recipe..

Nier holds your gaze with a stern expression on his features.

“You know I’ll do anything for you, right?”

“What do you mea—“ your plate’s suddenly swiped from under you.

“Sorry, y/n,” he raises his voice just enough to be heard over by the kitchen, “I’m really really hungry... and this is soooo good... so I’m going to have to eat your plate.. too....” Yonah breaks her attention from the boiling pot, and shoots Nier the most adorable glare you’ve ever seen.

“Hey, you can’t take y/n’s food! That’s rude!” She grabs another plate from the cabinet and, to your horror, begins to scoop out more god-forsaken sludge onto the platter.. There’s a light nudge on your side. You look over as Nier gives you a simple nod and a quick jerk of his head towards the kitchen with a sense of urgency. Putting two and two together in the moment, you give a light cough.

“O-oh that’s ok, Yonah. I’m uhhh...on a diet! Yes, on a diet, so Nier can have the rest of mine.”

“Really? Aww, ok...” With a tear in your eye, you turn and do your best to communicate the uttermost gratitude to your savior with your eyes alone. He seems to read it and smiles. It would even have been lovely, were it not for his face growing greener by the minute as he desperately keeps the contents of your former plate in his mouth. Poor boy...

Despite the meal, you really enjoyed having dinner with them. Listening to Yonah as she enthusiastically told stories out of the books she read, getting a pat on the shoulder from Nier every now and then as he affirmed to you that he was feeling fine (which you doubted) after eating both his and your portions. It was a peaceful night, and you could tell the two of them needed something like this to feel some semblance of normalcy again, too, after everything they’ve been through. You wish you could have done more to be there for them—to have been there beside Yonah as she could do nothing but lay in bed to fight off the Scrawl, to have been there by Nier’s side as he had a deep darkness take hold in his heart after losing his only family.

For some reason, these thoughts began to plague you the more you sat with them tonight. The squeak of the chair beside you being pushed back interrupts your thoughts before they can go further. Looking up, you notice Nier slowly stand hunched over with his arms crossed over his stomach.

This can’t be good.

“Hey guys, I think I’m gonna go take a—ack—“ he shoots up a hand to clamp his mouth shut. He swallows for a moment before finishing his thought, “...breather outside.”

“You okay?” Yonah stands up from her chair across us and gives Nier a look of concern.

“Y-yeah, I must’ve eaten too much.”

“Aw, you liked it that much?” She smiles with pride.

God bless them..

“Of c-course, I liked it so much t-that—“ the man darts out the door so fast, none of you have time to even react. You let out an exasperated sigh.

“I’ll go check on him...” you end up standing from your chair. Feeling a bit of pity, you give the girl a smile on your way out.

“Thanks for dinner, Yonah.”

She smiles back, “No problem! It was really fun having you over, let’s do this again soon, okay?”

You give a final wave before darting after the victim of tonight’s supper.

A wave of fresh air fans over you upon getting outside. You pause for a moment to breath it in, enjoying this moment of peace and quiet. It’s quickly interrupted by the sound of someone hurling in the distance.

“Nier?”

You run to the source of the noise beside the pond nearby. Supporting his weight with his hands on his knees, the white haired man doesn’t notice you approaching him. You inch closer, careful to keep distance from the splash zone.

“Are you okay?”

Stopping for a moment, he turns his head to you, giving you a full view of the scene before you. His face a few shades paler than his already pale skin, hair a disheveled mess, and he looked to have lost the hair band keeping it somewhat together along the way.

“Yeah...I’m g-good...” He looks terrible. “H-how about you..? Are you holding up alri—“ he turns back to where he started and continues emptying his stomach.

Alright that’s it.

You briskly get behind him. As you pull out the extra ribbon from your pocket, you brush his hair aside and grab most of the misplaced white locks you can. You give the ribbon a few knots before judging that it seems tight enough to hold back the mess. You gently rub his back until the puking seems to ease. The both of you stay focused on the waves in the water as he waits for his stomach to completely settle.

After some time, he slowly stands up straight, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. Keeping your hand on his back, you shift your weight to keep him from wobbling.

“Thanks, for helping me out.” He doesn’t break his eye contact from the water. “You didn’t have to come out here and find me, it’s kind of embarrassing to see me like this.”

“Why is it embarrassing?”

He sighs before turning to you. He makes a gesture around his face, knowing full well he means ‘because of this’.

“Well you’re the one who took an extra portion from me, if you hadn’t done that you wouldn’t be here..”

“I didn’t want you to get sick.”

Your irritation starts to grow, “So you get sick instead? No way.”

“What else was I supposed to do? Just sit there and let you suffer? And Yonah—”

“You didn’t have to eat my whole portion! You could have just eaten half or something!”

He stares at you dumbfounded. After a beat, he turns away from you, rubbing his neck shyly.

“Yeah...I could have done that, couldn’t I?” He mumbles under his breath.

“I guess I got carried away,” he looks at you from the corner of his eye, “trying to save you the stomach ache,”

You pause before giggling, breaking out into a light laughter. He turns his head to you again with a frown.

“What’s so funny?”

“Your sweet.” A blush creeps on his face at the comment. “But you’re also stupid. Next time, just let me eat it. I can handle a stomach ache, but I don’t wanna have to hold your hair as you puke into the pond cause you tried to ‘save me the stomach ache’, yeah?”

He lets out a long sigh before giving you a shy smile.

“‘Yeah.”

the way nier replicant and automata handle pacing, repetition, and multiple playthroughs is satisfying in such a specific way... it’s paced in such a way that it’s easy to control how much plot vs gameplay vs worldbuilding im seeing at any given time, so if i feel like devouring new information i can easily do that, but if i’m struggling to process things it’s easy to do something more gameplay centric instead. if i want a middle ground, then that’s fairly easy since a lot of dialogue takes place in battle, not just in cutscenes.

the repetition with multiple playthroughs also really helps with this since i get to reprocess previous information, with new reveals and things to consider to keep things fresh and interesting. i usually hate repeating things so close together (for example, i usually don’t replay or rewatch things unless it’s been 3 to 10 years since i last experienced said piece of media) but something about the nier franchise is so balanced that it’s satisfying at best and easy to get through at worst. i really miss replicant, so i might replay automata to chase that gameplay loop again.........

9. If you had to assign a theme song to &here i am alive, which would you assign?

Uh. So I actually have a playlist. I haven't released it into the wild because I want it to be perfect/want a few more songs on it. But I'll probably post it whenever I post my wip list/nav shit.

I'd like to say that Yellowcard's Here I Am Alive would be the theme since it's named after that song but idk that feel like a cop-out?? So, um another song from the playlist— Rush by Aly and AJ (please do not perceive my old, old music tastes that have not grown since I was 15)

10. What is the line you’re proudest of from &here i am alive?

THIS IS HARD. Mostly because &hiaa is so fucking long. There's a line in a later chapter that I'm fairly fond of, but I think I'm going to go with this one since the chapter it comes from has been posted:

She chews on the chicken, and you swear you can almost see tears forming at the corners of her eyes. “Oh my fucking god, Deku, my king, thank you for this delicious meal...“

I'm proud of most things that come out of Nao's mouth lmao.

13. When did you start writing fanfic?

THE NIKU ORIGIN STORY HUH....

I think i was in 7th grade so that's like, what, 12 or 13? I even remember my first fic, tho I... kinda wish i didn't LMAO. I'd been reading fic for a little bit before I started writing but it wasn't really what I wanted to read since reader insert fics were.... kinda niche at the time lol.

In short. I haven't been writing that much longer than you LMAO.

21. Is there an idea you’ve always wanted to write, but haven’t yet?

A little while back I had this idea for a NieR Replicant fanfic that was kind of a 'doomed from the start' unrequited love story. Very angsty, not something I usually do. I don't know if I'll ever get back to writing it because I beat the game LMAO and it'll be a long time before I replay because 1) that's a very emotionally heavy game that requires roughly four replays in order to complete the whole story and 2) I'm bad at replaying games.

Language Learning Victories in 2022! \(ovo)/

This is just going to be a motivational post for when I look back later. I’ve been reflecting on some cool stuff I was able to do this year in the languages I’ve been studying, that I’ve not been able to do before!

In japanese, I played the opening of Yakuza Ishin in only japanese without a guide and I managed it! I only had a rough grasp of what was going on (the historical japan setting definitely meant I had no idea what any jobs were called), but I managed it! I was familiar with the gameplay controls as it was similar to other yakuza games I played in english, but it marked the first time EVER I played a game in japanese I had never played in english or watched an english lets play of before!

In japanese I played 4 hours of Final Fantasy X in japanese this December, understood most of what I read (maybe 80-90% with the rest I could follow since I know the plot from english). Unlike prior times I’d tried to play games in japanese, this playthrough I used no word lookups and did not feel ‘drained’ or like it was intense effort to understand and follow (in Ishin it did feel ‘draining’ though I managed it). I think this milestone means I can probably handle Nier Automata and Nier Replicant in japanese now.

In japanese I read my first graded readers! I’ve been reading chapters in Satori Reader, so lots of translation aids for reference. But it feels good! It feels a lot like reading Mandarin Companion in Chinese.

I read 8 FULL BOOKS in chinese this Fall!!! And then some bits of novels, adding up to about ~500k chinese characters read this Fall!!! This is a huge accomplishment for me. One of the stories I read was a pingxie fanfic which was ~127k characters, I finished in 2-3 weeks (I can’t remember but it was finished in a reasonable time). That is the longest chinese story I’ve read so far! My dream goal is to finish Guardian next, but I know that’s a pipe dream possibly as it’s ~440k and much longer than anything else I managed to finish reading. But hey, at my current reading speed that’s 2 months, last year’s reading speed it would’ve taken 6 months, so I am improving!!! This reading goal is huge and I still can’t believe I did it. In the long run, I still want to test for myself if the claim of 4 million characters (from the “92 books to learn to read in a language” article) is true. So in the years ahead, 4 million characters read is the goal. For future me: a combination of reading-while-looking-up-words (like in Readibu) with reading another story extensively (like on paper or in Edge with TTS reading aloud to keep my pace up) was great. I feel like each activity helped build slightly different skills, in the first case increasing vocabulary through quick lookups, in the second case increasing vocabulary learned from context and reading-speed. I think the first activity has faster vocabulary acquisition, but the second activity trains a skill for general vocabulary acquisition when reading (and you learn words just not as many per reading session) as well as reading skill overall (comprehending sentences and paragraphs overall at a quick pace).

In japanese I watched my first lets play only in japanese! I watched a chill lets player’s 20 minute video on a horror game I’d never seen (so no prior context) and followed what was going on! To be fair, it was simple: a guy goes on a trip up a mountain through the woods in a rented car with a girl, car breaks and he runs into a cop, then car breaks and he runs into another guy who’s stuck up there, then guy and girl make it to the house in the mountain. That’s what happened in the first video (at least its what I THINK did - I could have misunderstood parts). I followed the video, and I am excited that I could keep watching. Later this week I want to listen to an audio drama I found with a transcript, and see if I can follow that audio drama’s plot too. I also watched some 20 minute chunks of another lets player, one of her videos had no captions at all. She was playing Kingdom Hearts so I knew what was going on from context, but it was also fun using listening skills only in combination with what I saw on screen visually to understand some of the commentary she was making. Last year when I tried lets plays, it was harder for me to follow.

Listened to ~10 Guardian audiobook chapters while walking and followed along. I’ve done listening-reading method with the first 20 chapters before, so it makes sense I’d be able to follow the plot. But still awesome I managed to do it!

Listened to ~15 condensed audio files of Ice Fantasy. This was a fun one! I found the condensed audio so i’d listen to it when driving like it was an audio drama, and I watched the show a year ago (with english subs) so vaguely recalled some names and lines when I heard them. But listening in only chinese in condensed audio, it was cool how much context I seemed to remember from episodes because of the actor’s vocal performance and music, and therefore just HOW many words I understood. I feel like I definitely understood 95% or more of all words I heard. It was a cool experience, and a lesson for future me that studying with condensed audio works quite well for me.

Not anything I’m studying formally yet, but I read a few chapters of Dante’s Inferno in bilingual english-italian and tried to figure out the italian words meaning using translation. It was fun, so I ended up buying The Nature Method Italian book. One day when I have time I plan to go through Ayan Academy’s audio recordings of the book (because I had NO idea of proper italian pronunciation when reading), and read my version of the textbook. I haven’t properly studied any italian yet, but these activities were fun.

Honestly, a lot of my language progress happened this Fall 2022. I think I studied a bit in the Spring, but I was so sick for so long I didn’t have energy for much, and I just did not end up studying much generally. So I’m really happy with my progress, since any happened at all. In particular, I’m REALLY excited about the reading progress in chinese.

I made the bulk of it from September to October, and it really is in part because I found Heavenly Path’s site and novel recommendations (which worked EXCELLENTLY for me as reading at my level and stuff to fill in gaps in my knowledge), and because a lot of the posters on Heavenly Path had written articles about what they did in their reading journey. It was amazing to see what they did and their progress, and how brave and quickly they pushed into reading more, and it really motivated me to do the same. It’s absolutely thanks to seeing their experiences, that I tried hard to read more this Fall and managed to finish 1 story, let alone as many as I did.

Indirectly, I think seeing their progress also motivated me in my japanese. Lately, just since this November, I’ve been trying to be braver about what I try to do in japanese. I think I’m still (realistically) upper N5-lower N4 language skill wise in japanese. With an artificial inflation in reading comprehension from hanzi knoweldge somewhat helping. But in just actual practice, my ability to do things IN japanese has increased significantly since last year. Last year I tried playing video games in japanese, and it was possible but I’d take 1+ hours getting to a savepoint I should’ve only taken 15 minutes to get through (because my reading was so slow), or I could play a game I knew from english but it felt intensely mentally draining. Whereas now I can get to savepoints and game-sections in a timely manner, and I do not feel drained when I play so I can play for long periods. That progress is SIGNIFICANT for me, as it greatly affects what I can do and how much I can enjoy doing it. Since playing video games (and watching lets plays seeing video games I love) in their original japanese is a major goal for me, its absolutely awesome to see progress in this area.

My manga reading has not improved much (going from japanese to chinese versions of a comic REALLY hammers in how much better my chinese is lol), which in part has reaffirmed to me hiragana-spellings of words are a weak spot for me (the more kanji the Better I read) and informal grammar is another weak spot. Also hiragana only ‘helper’ words like ‘however’, ‘and then’, ‘perhaps’ etc cause me a lot of confusion, being in mainly hiragana so I tend to not know if they’re grammar conjugation or words, and I do not know most of these helper type words. I think any manga reading improvement has been nearly all ‘artificial reading comprehension’ gains from knowing more hanzi and that indirectly helping japanese kanji recognition. However, reading Satori Reader stories just from this month alone is helping massively. I can tell consistent study for some months will cause significant reading improvements. Just from a month of it, I am recognizing more ‘helper’ words and it’s helping my grammar understanding. It makes sense, since reading dense text helped me so much in chinese, that reading in japanese will help too. So I think when it comes to studying, learning from manga will probably not be a primary activitiy but reading graded readers will for a while.

I think the audio-mainly study approach I used this year for japanese worked well, and will continue it. The audio focus helped a lot with remembering actual japanese words, instead of relying on hanzi knowledge to guess written word meanings. The listening focused approach also helps me notice verb-conjugation-chunks better so when I run into them in reading I realize ah yes this whole long chunk is conjugation not multiple words. I think moving forward I’ll continue an audio focus, and when reading keep using mostly methods that utilize BOTH text and audio (like lets plays, Satori Reader, Clozemaster).

I still REALLY want to try listening reading method for japanese. I constantly put it off because focusing for 1-3 hours is hard for me lol. But I have some very good resources for trying it, and I’d like to test out the method really badly with something like japanese where I’m more of a beginner than I was when I tested it for chinese. I have Duoreader app, Alice in Wonderland on that would be excellent for a test. I also have the Nier Replicant audio cd and transcript and translation, which is 1.5 hours and would be a perfect short test if I could just manage to focus for 3 hours. MDZS also has a japanese audio drama, which would be fun to both 1. experience a story I like in japanese translation, and 2. test out L R Method with.

I think with chinese, I’m at a point where unless I do L R Method with something SIGNIFICANTLY harder than what I’m reading, I will pick up vocabulary faster by just reading in chinese along to chinese audio and guessing words or reading in Readibu with word lookups. Last time I did L R Method with chinese I used Guardian and learned a LOT of new words per chapter, this time I truly have 95% comprehension of Guardian and don’t run into very many unknown words. Not enough to make the intensive-feeling L R Method worth it since it takes 2 times as long to go through a chapter. I do think L R Method in chinese with something like PoYun would work now, because Poyun’s author is a decent step up with several words per paragraph I usually don’t know.

6. Which yet-to-be-started fic is first on your list?

the unfortunate thing about reblogging this when i'm at a pretty quiet period in terms of fandom things is that i don't really have an answer to this question! perhaps i will write that pikmin fic that involves olimar's wife? i've also had a stray thought or two that's like "man, when i finish dungeon meshi i should write a fic where laios gets to fuck a monster." i have no idea how deep into DM i'll get, but it seems like it would be a really fun universe to write fanfic for!

12. Will you change anything about the way you edit or rewrite this year?

i definitely want to get more comfortable with writing fics out of order and then going back and stitching the scenes together. i've only done that a few times (ex: "experimental handling procedures") but it's had really good results. i think it works best with certain styles of fic, but couldn't hurt to try it out more...

18. Do you typically post multi-chapters as you write, or finish it all and then start posting? Would you like to change your posting method?

finish it all and then start posting! i have to do it that way or else i run the risk of abandoning a wip and disappointing readers, which i hate. and i really value the ability to go back and edit previous chapters to make everything more cohesive. unfortunately though, this means i have to wait, and don't get to see all the reader enthusiasm while i'm actually writing...

i guess i'll use this space to speculate on what fandoms i might be into... maybe dark souls or dungeon meshi, both of which i've started but haven't finished. or nier, since i really gotta play replicant at some point soon! and then there's always the possibility of silksong coming out this year, at which point i'd have to drop everything to play it. so. many possibilities!

36- What fic are you proudest of?

It's a Date, because I wrote it in three days. And by that I mean I drafted, edited, and posted a complete chapter of it on each subsequent day, culminating in 15k words. In three days. It's not the best quality in my opinion for that reason alone, but I am proud of doing that! Won't happen again, though, lmao…

49- What fic of yours would you say is the best introduction to you as a writer?

Well, that depends! For Portal I'd rec tuberOSum, my newer chellDOS gift fic. Hopefully there will be more Portal oneshots to come! If you do want to read my old portal longfic, Murder.exe has Stopped Working, feel free to skim over the weird bits and just read the parts where Cave Johnson appears. His scenes with Greg, Caroline, and etc are still entertaining (to me). My most "flavorful fic" that's up atm is probably my Trigun oneshot HARD-SOLE, but be warned that it is 1st person and experiments with a thickly accented narrator. If you like Nier Gestalt/Replicant, I'd say Beach Party if you want to see nice things happen, or In Search of the Blu-Bird if you want to see awful things happen.

In another life - Nier: Replicant

Check out this awesome fanfic my friend wrote! Honestly I loved this story so much, so I convinced them to share it with the world.

Pairing: Emil/Nier (one-sided)

A/N: in Nier:Replicant one can change the character name. In my version he is called Llys. All the events described here take place in the second part of the game.

It rained all morning. Emil looked up into the sky wondering how long will it last. Kaine was dozing off nearby, her back against stiff and wet rock. Their campfire was long gone, the remaining embers washed away by the rain. Probably they need to find a new place, dry and comfortable but for some reason Emil was reluctant to move.

He thought about his body…Will the rains turn his skeleton-like limbs all rusty and then they will slowly start falling apart? Kaine and Llys are human, rain is no threat to them…but what about him? Surely the forces of nature will try to fight this disgusting body, will try to wipe him away from Earth. The crying seagulls on their way to Seafront distracted him a bit but this pain lingered in his mind. Instinctively he hugged himself with his long skeletal arms, a protection of sort from nature…And from voices in his head so full of self-hatred.

Kaine moved anxiously in her sleep. -She did not actually sleep during the night. – he thought. – So I won’t disturb her now…Maybe she is dreaming of something nice this time.

Should the likes of me even dream?

His eyes suddenly caught a glimpse of a silhouette approaching from the north-east of the plains – white messy hair, slim and tall figure, a giant broadsword behind his back. Emil thanked the gods again for letting him see all this without hurting anyone. Probably the only thing he really was thankful for.

The white circles he had for eyes were lifeless but in truth his real eyes devoured every last part of the figure trying to memorize every little detail: the length of his boots, his walking manner, every feature of his almost perfect face which was now visible from where he sat. Each time he saw Llys he drowned in that grey and blue eyes of his, confident and cold but somehow at the same time kind and understanding. Each time he saw Llys he brought up memories of how he lost his human body and how he felt and how Llys never rejected him but greeted him instead with calming words and opened arms.

I will never abandon you.

Do you really think that he cares about you?

He keeps you by his side because he thinks you are useful.

For now.

YOU’RE WRONG! – with this last cry the other whispering voices slowly retreated to the darkest places of his mind only to appear again later.

Emil gathered himself quickly and floated towards Llys. After all Kaine was still sleeping…Let her rest just a bit longer.

- Llys! – he said, voice as cheerful as always. – What’s up? How was that business of yours at Seafront?

- Fine, I guess. – Llys looked tired and wary after the journey. Exhausted, even. – The package was hard to deliver but the client paid handsomely. -Let it be the last time when we fulfill such foolish requests. – Grimmoire Weiss materialized behind Llys.

- Don’t push yourself too hard, please. – Emil placed his hand on Llys’s shoulder and squeezed lightly. The sensation was very nice, it sent electric impulses up to his spine. Emil suddenly imagined himself like a real human, a version of himself but five years older. Back then during their first encounter Kaine told him that he was a “cute little thing”, so probably after five years this cuteness will remain? Maybe Llys will also call him cute. He imagined a real hand touching the shoulder of his dear friend, a hand of flesh and blood. He imagined his own lilac eyes looking at Llys with warmth and care and not these horrible empty sockets. His own lips smiling cheerfully not this terrifying mouth twisted with everlasting monstrosity which no one ever will call a smile.

You are disgusting…

He is disgusted by your touch, can’t you see?

This sudden outburst of his imagination only lasted for a moment but with these thoughts Emil’s hand hastily left Llys’s side. Emil looked away ashamed of his actions. – You stupid piece of junk, you should have asked if he was okay with the touch, he probably felt…

- Emil, is everything okay? – Emil felt two strong hands grabbing his skeleton shoulders and felt Llys’s gaze on his face.

- Ha..ha-hah, y-yeah, sure! Why do you ask? – even if his face wasn’t capable of showing any emotion his voice still betrayed him.

- Are you sure? – Emil turned to face Llys only to find him several centimeters away. If he had a real body his cheeks would probably blush…

- Y-yeah, of course I’m sure…Just feeling a bit lonely, you know. Kaine is sleeping, didn’t get much sleep during the night and you were at Seafront, so…

- Emil…- Weiss stopped unable to find the right words.

Llys glanced quickly at their camping place – remnants of the fire, Kaine lying on hard wet rock, her swords and Emil’s scepter covered carefully by a piece of cloth. Something dire ran across his beautiful face…something like rage. Emil has already prepared himself for this talk they had had several times before: - No, Llys, everything is fine, really…We are used to sleeping outside. We feel perfectly comfortable and we don’t need anything, so don’t worry about us.

And then Llys leaned closer and hugged him. He pressed Emil’s head to his chest whispering: I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…Somehow among the countless rain droplets bombarding his head he made out one that was entirely different. And then another. And another. Hot tears poured from Llys’s eyes, small droplets traveling down to where Emil’s eyes and nose should be. All Emil could do was just to hug him back and try to wave away the thought of how he would like to sense the taste of these tears on his own lips.

He never realized that his and Kaine’s sleeping place was such a miserable sight. Never put much thought into it. His well-being never was much of a concern. Yet here he was, his dearest friend crying about his fate.

- Please, moment, never go away…Let me stand here hugging my friend for an eternity. Let the worlds collapse around us, just please don’t let go

Of course he knew the absurdity of this thought and he cursed himself for it. No happy life was possible without Kaine, without Weiss, without Yonah who is still out there, probably in grave danger. And yet…Please let me be selfish just once…

Sometime after the events in Façade

Kaine tossed some paper into their campfire. Emil cuddled near it watching the chaotic dance of flames.

- Kaine…I wanted to ask you something.

- Well, go ahead. – She leaned against the rock throwing the remaining paper into the fire. – What is it, Emil?

- Well, it’s about the king’s wedding…Or more about what I’ve said on that wedding.

- So? – Kaine raised an eyebrow. – What is it you said?

Emil would have licked his lips if he had those before starting this awkward conversation.

- Well…Just before the tragedy I spoke with Llys. I told him how I envied Fyra, how I wanted to be Fyra on this wedding. He told me that one day I will find a wonderful bride. But…

- It wasn’t the case, was it? – she asked.

Emil gasped. – W-wait! How did you even…

- I’m not fucking blind, you know. – she plainly looked at him, her gaze didn’t show any judgement, maybe a bit of concern.

- It’s just…I…Is something wrong with me? I really felt that way…I wanted to be on Fyra’s place and I would never say that to him of course, but I wanted Llys to be on king’s place.

Kaine kept silent, though somehow her gaze seemed encouraging. She wanted him to keep talking.

- I just…I imagined this ceremony…I, meaning my true self, will wear a white suit holding a great bouquet of lunar tears and Llys, he will be dressed in black and grey cause I think these colors look great on him. Everyone will be singing and dancing, eating tasty food, tossing flower petals over their heads. And…and you will be there too, Kaine. Cheering and laughing with others! No, don’t give me that look! I know that you will join us this time.

His imagination flowed onwards and onwards but he was so overwhelmed with these thoughts and ideas that he never wanted to stop. And Kaine didn’t seem to bother.

- Weiss will probably grumble again but he will end up sharing jokes with guests. Yonah will be there too, she will cook one of her special dishes! And Devola and Popola! I’ve heard that they have angelic voices and their singing is magnificent…And me and Llys, we will cheer with you. He will take my hand and lead me onwards…We will stand in front of everyone and someone will say: Now, you can seal your marriage with a kiss! And Llys he will…he will kiss me and then I…

His speech ended abruptly as his eyes accidentally caught a glimpse of a skeleton hand. He stared at it stupidly as if it wasn’t his, waiting for a real hand of flesh and bone to replace this monstrous limb. Realization stroke him like a lightning bolt. How could you forget something like this?

- No…No, what am I saying…O God…I am so sorry, I never really meant any of this, please don’t take it seriously. Just please, forget it, Kaine!

His body started to shake, he felt like he will burst into tears. But they never came. Another reminder to toss away these stupid dreams…He sobbed. Long skeleton limbs gathered around to protect him from the outside world. Only to be stopped by firm grip on his arm.

- Quit your whining, goddammit! – Kaine rarely raised her voice at him before. But now she was furious, flickers of red in her eyes. In a one harsh movement she pulled him up and looked directly at his face. There was no chance for Emil to avoid those eyes now. – Listen to me, Emil. And listen carefully. I don’t give a fuck about this romantic fluffy stuff you were babbling about. But here is what I know: if you love someone than fucking go for it, no whirling around. Trust me, we don’t have time for this bullshit.

- I know why you hesitate – “look at my body, I am so disgusting, I am a monster, no one will ever love me”. I am a monster too, Emil. And yet I had grandma who cared about me, protected me from those fuckers in the Aerie, who loved me. And then I found Llys. You found Llys. Did he treat you like you were a freak back then when you still haven’t lost your human form?

- N-no. – Emil managed to answer between his quiet sobs. – He was gentle, kind to me even if I was a total stranger.

- Did his attitude change when you transformed?

- No, no…When I realized that I had changed I started to cry. I hated myself so much…But still he hugged me. Told me that we will figure something out.

- That’s what I’m talking about. Our small group is a motherfucking freak show – stupid floating book, skeleton boy, possessed bitch. And yet he took us all in, accepted our sins and our souls. Don’t doubt him, Emil. He won’t abandon you.

- What I am trying to say is that you shoudn’t think for Llys. He has his own head on his shoulders and if you ever come up with confession he will answer without hurting your feelings. And well, if he won’t I’ll shove the stick right up his ass!

- Kaine! Don’t say things like that!

- Shut up and let me finish my thought. – Kaine let him go and Emil slowly retreated to his seat still sobbing. – I don’t know if the answer will be yes or no. What I DO know is that you, Emil, deserve love. Yes, you look like a skeleton but you are the kindest, the gentlest creature on this goddamn earth. You saved everyone in that village, you sacrificed your body to get me back. Such souls are so hard to find… like lunar tears. You. Deserve. Love. Never even try to tell me otherwise!

She breathed in heavily, tired from this improvised speech. Silence fell over their camp disturbed only by cracking of fire. Emil’s sobs died with Kaine’s words.

- The only thing to do is to tell him about your feelings. The sooner the better.

- I know that we don’t have much time. But the only thing Llys thinks of now is Yonah. And I…I don’t want to disturb his grief and add even more problems.

His voice still trembled from the crying but with each phrase spoken he seemed to become more confident.

- We all need to focus on Yonah’s rescue, so I’ll probably save my…my confession for later. I will tell him everything after we return from the Shadowlord’s castle.

That night Emil dreamt. He saw a mansion as big as the one where he had been locked up for his entire life but this one wasn’t so ominous. Sunrays knocked at the windows, green moss crawled up the walls, the front doors were wide open welcoming every traveler inside. Birds sang their praises to the sun hidden behind the branches of gigantic oak, a wild boar tamed by Llys rolled in circles on the grass. The waters of the nearby lake glistened invitingly, one gaze just enough to go swimming. Though Llys probably spent all his time fishing. Behind the mansion he saw a small garden with long rows of vegetables and entire flowerbeds vibrant with lunar tears. Wow, Llys has finally found a way to grow them…

On the second floor there was a library: books gathered from Seafront and Façade and from Llys’s village, books on languages long forgotten, scientific reports, treasure maps, musical scores…Everything was there for him to dig in, to reveal all the secrets the history of humanity has to offer. He heard the sounds of music from the first floor – someone was playing the piano and two angelic voices followed the tune. Popola entered the song after Devola and their voices intertwined beautifully when they reached the refrain.

Kaine was there, sitting casually on a chair, her terrifying blades nowhere to be seen. Yonah, her arms crossed on the chest, stood near Kaine, completely devoured by the song. Grimoire Weiss floated nearby trying to follow the rhythm. The young king of Façade and his wife Fyra were dancing gracefully in the center of the room and another pair of more clumsy dancers whirled around them – they both had red bags fastened on their shoulders.

Only then Emil turned his gaze to the piano. And stunned. An older version of himself, no more than nineteen years old, was playing the piano, his lilac eyes serious and focused, movements of his fingers precise and quick. He was not alone…Another pair of hands joined him, clumsily pressing on piano keys.

Llys was there…By his side.

When the song finally came to the end the dancers stopped catching their breaths. The red bag couple immediately started their usual argument – who stepped on whose foot and who was the first to lose rhythm during the dance. The king shouted praises to musicians, his wife nodding fiercely.

Kaine shrugged but he caught a glimpse of smile on her always emotionless face. Yonah clapped so hard that Weiss started to accuse her of creating additional vibrations making his floating more difficult. The twins laughed cheerfully at his grumbling.

Emil’s heart almost stopped when he looked again at the pair at the piano. Llys placed his hands around the waist of his older version, he saw himself blushing vividly at the touch. While everyone else was talking, clapping and laughing, Llys’s head rested on his shoulder, nose poking at the curve of his neck. With one lazy movement Llys cupped his blushing cheek and turned Emil, so he could see his face. There was a question on his lips, something unimportant, stupid even but it all died immediately when Llys covered Emil’s lips with his. Emil stumbled just for a second but then his lilac eyes closed and he eagerly returned the kiss placing his hands in a soft white mess of Llys’s hair.

- I want to stay here forever

In the Shadowlord’s castle

- Emil, no!

- Get back here! EMIL!

He could perfectly hear their shouts from here. His small sphere floated back dragged by Popola’s magic. There isn’t much time. The sphere containing his friends successfully reached the other side of the broken bridge and he sighed in relief casting a dispel.

They’ve made it. Good. They still have a chance to defeat the Shadowlord.

…

You are such a coward.

I didn’t have the strength to confess. I failed.

You lost your chance. I’m sorry.

…

The black void devoured him completely. Small cracks started to appear on the light-blue surface of the sphere looking like spider webs. Beautiful.

Llys…I…

I love you

I want to see you again.

I want to see all of you again.

I don’t want to die.

There is so much I wanted to tell you, Llys

Perhaps, in another life.

The sphere crushed under the pressure of the void. It continued to collapse until it reached the size of an apple. As hungrily and fiercely the void devoured everything on its way before as calmly and peacefully it turned into golden ashes carried away by the winds.

Emil’s scepter fell on the ground with an ominous ringing.

In another life.
