La revolución de la imprenta en la Europa renacentista

La llegada a Europa de la imprenta de tipos móviles en metal en la década de 1450 fue un acontecimiento que tuvo consecuencias enormes y perdurables. La innovación se atribuye ampliamente al impresor alem��n Johannes Gutenberg (c. 1398-1468), cuya impresión de la Biblia en 1456 fue muy popular. Las imprentas comenzaron con obras religiosas y libros de texto, pero pronto llegaron a imprimir en masa todo tipo de textos, desde panfletos de la Reforma a novelas románticas. La cantidad de libros creció exponencialmente, el costo disminuyó y la gente leía más que nunca. Las ideas se transmitían por Europa conforme los académicos publicaban sus obras, comentarios sobre textos antiguos y críticas entre sí. Autoridades tales como la Iglesia Católica se opusieron a ciertos libros y los censuraron o incluso los quemaron, pero la actitud general hacia los libros y la lectura ya había sido cambiada para siempre.
