How to Stop Suffering and Be Happy
Our inherent human capacity for dreaming and aspiration is a double-edged sword. While it fuels our drive for progress and self-improvement, it also serves as a constant reminder of the gap between our imagined ideals and the realities we face. This dissonance between our aspirations and our lived experiences is a fertile ground for suffering. We become acutely aware of our shortcomings, our missed opportunities, and the stark contrast between the life we envision and the one we inhabit.
The path to genuine happiness lies not in chasing after elusive desires, but in cultivating preferences that align with our actual experiences. Instead of relentlessly pursuing an unattainable perfection, we can embrace the beauty and imperfections of our present reality. We can find contentment in the simple joys of life, in the connections we forge with others, and in the pursuit of meaningful endeavors that enrich our existence.
This shift in perspective requires a conscious effort to detach from the relentless pursuit of idealized desires. It demands a willingness to accept the fullness of our lives, both the triumphs and the tribulations. By cultivating preferences grounded in reality, we can transform our suffering into a source of strength and resilience. We can learn to appreciate the present moment, find fulfillment in the here and now, and forge a path towards a more authentic and fulfilling existence.

Success vs. Happiness (Horizontal vs. Vertical Growth)
Regarding how we invest our time in evolving throughout our lives, there are three distinct pathways we typically pursue. The first path is stagnation, characterized by a lack of personal growth and development. The second path is horizontal growth, which involves acquiring expertise in a specific domain, such as becoming a skilled electrical engineer or an exceptional parent. The third path is vertical growth, which encompasses our development as psychologically healthy individuals, fostering self-awareness, resilience, and emotional well-being.

Staying Happy (Living Happily Ever After)
Though creating a happy, self-actualized life for ourselves is daunting, keeping our peace and equanimity is also challenging.  To live a good life, doing things that got us there must become lifelong habits.  Happiness is a journey, not a destination.
Here are some of the key takeaways from the episode:
Happiness is a journey, not a destination. It is something that we need to work at every day.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to happiness. What makes one person happy may not make another person happy.
It is important to find what works for you and to be patient with yourself.
There are many things that we can do to increase our happiness, such as practicing gratitude, spending time with loved ones, and engaging in activities that we enjoy.

Don’t Blame Your Programming, Change Your Programming
Who we are and what we do is shaped by our lifelong programming.  If we are not happy with how we are, then the best thing we can do is change our programming and stop blaming ourselves.  We can blame our programming and stop blaming ourselves, but even better, we can change our programming.

Nonjudgmental Mindfulness
Judging others through our thoughts, social media, and even their face creates a vicious loop that leads us away from happiness.  Understanding and kindness towards others creates a more softness towards our foibles and offenses.

Why “More” Ultimately Never Works
Wanting and getting ultimately never works. To fight off this insatiable urge, we can do five things. Don't compare ourselves to others. Don't compare ourselves to our previous selves. Do something for the joy of them. Be careful of hedonic adaptation. Live life with gratitude.

Memento Mori (Remember That You Must Die)
Death is the one thing that we all, ultimately, have to face.  But what if instead of being something dreaded, we looked at death as our teacher of how to be thankful for every day we live?  Memento Mori, which means "remember that you must die," can teach us many things about living.
