capsule’s newest album is as fun as going to an amusement park!
capsule is a colorful music world created by Koshijima Toshiko’s cute vocals and Nakata Yasutaka’s pop sound. They were joined by numerous guest musicians on their previous work CUTIE CINEMA REPLAY, and just seven months later their third album phony phonic is on sale now.
“I don't feel like it was made too fast. I had plenty of days off (laughs). I want to release music that sounds fresh, so we spend less time in the recording process, and with that kind of pace albums can be put out quickly.” (Nakata Yasutaka/sound & artwork)
In the meantime, Nakata Yasutaka started his own label contemode, and in October they released their first compilation album entitled contemode V.A. He says he took breaks, but I find it shocking how productive he is.
“The concept behind contemode is to make pop media without becoming diehard pop fans. Instead of a record label, I consider contemode as a sort of place for friends to hang out.”
With the establishment of contemode, it appears they’ve changed their approach to capsule.
“I feel reassured by all the friends we’ve made. Half of phony phonic features other artists, and their individual personalities come through really strongly, so I don't have to try as hard. I genuinely had a great time during recording.” (Koshijima Toshiko/vocals)
“It’s very relaxed, but that’s fine as far as capsule goes. It suits our style of music better if you sing like you’re humming (laughs)” (Nakata)
“It took even less time for me to do the vocals. It’s not that I got better at singing but more because it was all about going off the feel of the music this time around.” (Koshijima)
Since everything was done digitally in Nakata’s home studio, spontaneous ideas worked in tandem with the mood during recording to create a lively album with a sense of freedom to it.
“It’s an album that’s like an amusement park. Even though you’re riding on artificially-constructed attractions, it’s fun to actually feel the wind on you and experience those kinds of sensations.” (Nakata)
With contemode as their basis, capsule has put out enjoyable pop music with their freest approach yet. It’s a must-listen for pop fans!

adding these to my blog for my own personal reference but also for fellow artists to benefit from a pretty comprehensive chart of color working using a retro style
might have to open the first two images in a separate tab to see the text clearly
