The Joker: A Comic Masterlist
Disclaimer: This list will be subject to changes (comic addition and comic removal), as well as possible changes to its labeling system as this list is continually adjusted. If you see that a certain comic is missing please message me and make sure to include the comic's official title, number, and series of origin. The timeline organization of both single issue and collected editions is based on biased research.
Single issues with several following numbers are to be read as a collected edition.
This list will also include a link to where the comics below can be read for free.
Batman Comic's 1940 to 2011
These single-issue comics follow the familiar formula of, 'hero catch's villain'. In my opinion, they really showcase Joker's goofiness and criminal intelligence.

Joker #1-15 2021 AND The Joker: Clown Prince of Crime (1975-76) series
The Joker: Clown Prince of Crime Series is a spin-off series with other villains such as Lex Luther, The Riddler, The Creeper, and more.
Joker 2021 #1-15 is a different series following the events of Infinite Frontier #1 involving Jim Gordon getting contracted to kill the Joker. To best understand this series I would suggest reading Batman: The Killing Joke, Joker War, and Black Mirror first.
This link will give you access to both collected editions.
Batman: The Killing Joke
Originally released in 1988, Batman: The Killing Joke was adapted from the 1951 short story The Man Under The Red Hood. This comic was also adapted into an animated movie in 2016.

Batman: A Death In The Family
A Death in the Family begins when Batman relieves Jason Todd of his crime-fighting duties. Jason begins a search for his biological mother but ends up being tortured by The Joker. This leads to his presumed death.

The Three Jokers
The Three Jokers is a 'spiritual' successor to Batman: The killing Joke and Batman: A Death In The Family. Batman, Batgirl, and Red Hood (now Jason Todd) explore a lead on The Joker, who, as the title suggests may have been 3 different men this whole time.

The fact that Death of the Family went through dialogue changes and censorship TWICE (like erasing much of the Big Gay in the 2nd version and then slapping in a Little Gay in the 3rd version) but SOMEHOW this page we are pretty much all familiar with slipped by UNSCATHED and that’s nothing short of a MIRACLE to me.

Do you have any Joker recovery fic recs or any that explore his past?
Hey! Fics that focus on Joker's past are not very frequent, but I do have a couple of recs that I hold close to my heart:
+ if you can find me, i'm here by princegrantaire (Jack/Jeannie, rated T, one-shot, 3k words)
Summary: The very first time Jack’s on stage, front and centre, lit up by so many lights, he doesn’t say a single word. (A look at Jack Napier's sad little life right before ACE Chemicals intervenes.)
+ Again by Ruin (Lurkylurk) (Batjokes, rated T, one-shot, 1.5k words)
Summary: In his dreams that man keeps falling—and he keeps on failing. It has to be this way.
+ Courting Darkness by GrowingAHead (shelleyk0503) (Batjokes, two-parter, rated E, 13.2k words)
Summary: Set in the New 52 verse, “Zero Year: Secret City” (Issues #21-24). *Contains spoilers for that arc. As well as "Bright New Yesterday" (Issue #0) story in the book “The Graveyard Shift”. Before the Bat, before the fall into A.C.E chemical vat. Bruce tries to infiltrate the Red Hood Gang again undercover. He doesn’t realize that Red Hood One has a different kind of trap set for him. (… And Crane’s prototype fear gas ‘may’ had an effect slightly akin to that of an aphrodisiac in certain doses.)
These explore Joker before the fall into the acid, either in relation to Bruce or outside of it. The last one is basically Bruce and Red Hood One from Zero Year, not truly about exploring Joker's past, but it's got some great characterization and smut.
As to fics focusing on rehabilitation... I haven't read a lot, to be honest, since they aren't really my preference. There's Half Way Across by Dracze, the iconic and quintessential Batjokes rehabilitation fic, and I assume you probably already read it. Outside of that, I can point you towards two fics, although they don't much focus on Joker's past:
+ Atrophy by TimmyJayBird (Batjokes, multi-chapter, rated E, 68.6k words)
Summary: Bruce Wayne is out of options- leaving the Joker in Arkham simply ensures that the man will escape, and hit his city harder with each new visit. Out of desperation, he does the only thing he can think of- chooses to face the clown not as Batman, but simply Bruce, in an attempt to rehabilitate him into society. But the project turns even more dangerous when Bruce finds his obsession with the clown transcends his role as Batman- and when the clown returns the interest.
+ Don’t Mind if I Fall (Head Over Feet) by arrowinthesky (restfulsky5) (Batjokes, WIP, rated M, 25.7k words)
Summary: In the aftermath of great hurt, Bruce takes in a rehabilitated Joker, now known as Jack Napier, expecting the unwarranted generosity to distract him. Heal his own wounds. Ease his guilt. And it does. He just never figured on falling in love, too.
I guess my own fic, Falls the Shadow, is also exactly meant to be... Joker getting better through confronting his own past, but fair warning that it's a WIP and that it's been a while since the last update. It's not abandoned and I'm working on it! It's just that I can't promise anything as of yet, with the way my brain is being.
Anyway! Anyone who has recommendations that fit this description is also more than welcome to add to this post, and if you read these fics-- hope you enjoy, Anon. Don't forget to leave the authors some love <3

How do I get into DC and batman and shit without reading a trillion comics
the animated shows are a great way if you dont want to read comics, batman especially has a ton of cartoons since you named him specifically (btas, brave and the bold, the handful of justice league cartoons, batman 04, so on and so forth) (brave and the bold especially is great cuz it has a bunch of dedicated episodes to C tier jobbers no one gives a fack about..its how i found out about characters like plastic man and blue beetle :) not that theyre c tier jobbers though..)
if you meant more that youre overwhelmed by the sheer amount of comics a character like batman has....yeah there is a lot
my advice is to grab onto some specific character or plot youve seen floating around online and latch onto it like a leech and just start from there....ermm for example.. i was enchanted by a friend of mines batjokes art so i went to go read the storylines they were drawing fanart from (they were contained in batman 2011- its a run i really enjoyed! funnily its the only new 52 comic i enjoyed. batman why do you get it all)
and from there, there were a few characters i remembered being interested in seeing out of the corner of my eye, like barbara gordon and cassandra cain, so i read batgirl 2000 and birds of prey 1999 (both bat affiliated books) ....its not the way everyone would do it but i dont see a problem with working your way backwards through comics! i read a little of nightwing and robins comics that were running alongside bop and batgirl but mostly i just focused on what grabbed me and let the love in my heart guide me.
theres also a buncha stupidhero movies. and games! none ive played personally but i heard the arkham games are preddy good.
hmm as for newer comics though i think the current ongoing worlds finest (superman & batman series) is good, its written by one of my favorite writers mark waid. and drawn by dan mora so it looks pretty too. and itd be shorter than some of these older comics....but older comics are so good...give them a chance...

I know it said spammed with ANONYMOUS asks but... I'm just gonna spam you with regular asks.
What is your favorite interpretation of the Joker vs your favorite of Batman/Bruce Wayne?
Of course I love new 52 batjokes! There is just so many things going on with those two, alas the comic introduced me to superwonder and this scandalous but I ship them quite a bit, but that is not what we are talking about. I personally love new 52 because joker is pretty serious about their relationship, it could be read as obsessive but really, like fogman said it is a humanizing factor. I personally love that, and bruce is always constantly trying to understand joker but also distances himself from him, as though afraid of truly knowing him. Afraid of truly knowing that at the center of all this evil, of all his crimes, is batman. It's like... Joker's entire existence is a love letter to batman in the worst way possible. God the ending had me beat, bruce ends up crossing the line, the line joker pretends to have crossed, bruce threatens him, threatens joker with the one and only thing that could ever scare him, his past. Then he falls to his death, or at least what was supposed to be his death. There is honestly so many reasons why new 52 would be every batjokes shippers favorite, the disguise, the uncompromising and unconditional love that joker feels, that bruce fears, and in the end lays beside him, the man that has caused him so much pain and loss, ends up calling him a friend. I love them. Eric border is utterly adorable though, honestly joker pretending to be a good boi has to be everything I ever needed in life. But amnesiac joker is everything to me, I hate scott snyder for giving such a good concept only for it to fit four pages of a comic book, like god! I am so pissed, they deserves so much better. I wanna see him get re-jokerized I want bruce to find out that the guy he met on that bench was joker, I want to see that information sink in. The information that joker pleaded for him not to go back, I also wanna see him chuckle with regret when joker told him that he's talking about the lake. How utterly stupid he was for not listening. Imagine him facing joker again with that knowledge? Looking at him with regret whilst he brandishes a knife with the intent to slice through layers of kevlar, remembering the gun that he held under his chin, how the flower that sat in his pocket used to be the color purple, you remember the the color of brown illuminated by that strangely orange lamp when you see green strands flowing in the wind. You wonder now, the skin of his ears would have reddened with blood in this cold, but it stays that same acid bathed color no matter the weather. You regret ever having met him, that man on the bench for now you wonder, would he have smelled of that rotten and festering green apple scent or would he have worn perfume or cologne, would he have preferred the scent of lavender or wood? You then feel a cold sharp stab of pain in your rib, not too deep and your senses are once again engulfed with him and all you feel is regret.

so silly of me I think I sent asks to ur other deactivated account.
I just wanted to praise ur writing, I love everything you've written and I find that u really nail the atmosphere and characterization
This Strange Effect is the title of a song I like so i immediately was raising eyebrows on ur newest long fic and I'm already obsessed!!! First of all I LOVE space fics esp with these two, there's really not enough of them and the ones I've read are always fun!
I have a theory (if u could even call it that) that the reason the bond didn't appear to have an effect on joker as much as it did on Bruce was bc joker is just always that intense about bats and is used to not acting out on that impulse at every given moment
I'm so excited for chapter 2 <3
Soooo you got me aha. That's pretty much it! Joker is so in tune with his emotions regarding his love for Bruce and Bruce... isn't. It will be fun to show yall how this plays out with Bruce basically forced to feel his desires for the damn clown twink. The effects of the soul bond in general will leave the fic chock full of Bruce and Joker confronting their connection and the best part will be the Justice League being forced to witness it lol.
And ding ding ding again, "This Strange Effect" is a song by The Kinks that I really like. It just fit so perfectly as a fic title. My spotify has been completely taken over by batjokes music and I pulled that one from one of my many playlists of them.
I'm glad you're enjoying the scifi/ space element! I'm loving it too, like, it's such a landmine for comedic situations. Part of me choosing this JL/ space element was watching the animated series and asking the question "what if Joker was there too?" during the many space mission episodes because the joker brain rot is that bad now. Like, I recently read some of JL in the new 52s and watched the animated adaptation "Justice League War" that made me think okay if Bruce saw Joker was one of the people kidnapped by parademons, I would have lost my shit imagining a space rescue. And the scenarios kept swirling in my head until we got here. Anyway, yeah, Joker in space, always a good and stressful time for all lol.
Thanks for leaving such a nice comment, it made my day. I can't wait to publish more for you to read!

I feel like this part of Zero Year is never talked about even though it ties into the whole “dilating pupils” aspect of the Joker arcs in the Nu52. We literally see Red Hood One (or Joker, whatever) over here with dilated pupils when he sees Batman for the first time. This is important.
Hello? What? Why is no one talking about this? (At least from what I’ve seen)
What I also think goes very unnoticed is that Joker’s eyes in Last Knight on Earth aren’t those tiny fixed points of hatred. I could write a whole analysis on that, but that’s for another time.

What are your thoughts on batjokes, specifically their versions of earth-2 (either the golden age or the N52 version)?
I am not very personally invested in their Golden Age incarnation, to be honest. It's a lot of fun, and there's some absolutely bonkers storylines in there that are just delightful, but I prefer the Modern Age and what comes after it because it's darker and more nuanced.
And New 52 Batjokes... I'm a huge fan. Snyder's take on them is my favorite. Death of the Family and Endgame are the equivalent of what Bryan Fuller did for Hannibal, with the NBC show. They're stories and incarnations I love dearly for the tragic depth they have and the careful symbolism and parallels woven in. Love as inescapable horror... nothing has embodied that for Batjokes this way since Morrison's A Serious House on a Serious Earth, and The Clown at Midnight (though Morrison's flavor is more of a cosmic and meta-aware nature).
