one word prompt: success
okay someone with a pfp of iroh holding a lotus tile sent me this prompt, and i typed half of it and then accidentally DELETED IT FROM MY DRAFTS, so if that was you i’m so sorry! i’ll try my best to rewrite/answer it here!!!
——————
when zuko tries to propose to katara, he spends a whole month planning out the event.
we’re talking rows and rows of flowers, an imported water tribe chef to make her favorite dishes, a decorated barge to take them out at sunset for his proposal speech—fucking fireworks.
the day of, the palace is in the quietest uproar one can imagine, what with all the countless preparations that must be attended to while also avoiding alerting the water tribe ambassador to their movements. zuko himself is particularly harried, buzzing around putting out metaphorical fires that pop up every other minute.
and when he finally, finally is able to escort his lovely partner down the palace steps, into their private palanquin, and aboard their romantic sea-faring ride to the middle of the capital bay… zuko is mere seconds from kneeling before his future fiancé to pop the big question, hands fumbling around in his pockets for the gold and jade ring he had specially designed for her—only to find his pockets empty.
she’s looking at him with glittering, expectant blue eyes, hands folded demurely in front of her, tears of elation already beginning to crumble her beautiful face when zuko promptly curses, spins twice to frantically scan his surroundings, and then lets out a truly aggravated roar into the sky.
complete with flickering flames escaping his lips and all.
and because this is zuko—perpetually rotten luck, three left feet, complete antonym to the word ‘smooth,’ zuko—his frustration promptly sets fire to the drapes decorating their barge, which quickly erupt the tablecloth holding their water-tribe dinner, and subsequently sear the edges of their robes in the small space.
in her panic to put the flames out, katara accidentally bends just a tad too large of a wave that easily sweeps both them and their crispy dinner into the cold, salty bay.
as a nearby ship (containing the fire lord’s bodyguards who are never too far away from their liege) cruises at rapid pace towards them to offer help, the couple splutters water out of their mouths, sheds their outer robes to rid themselves of the water-logged deadweight, and immediately dissolve into hiccuping laughter that threatens to drown them all the same.
and as they cling to each other—his hair slumped wetly to the side of his head, and her makeup dripping quite messily down her face—zuko finally asks, “please, just say you’ll marry me.”
needless to say, the servants ship opts to wait a few yards away to respectfully give their fire lord and his fiancé some time to celebrate their successful engagement.

After twenty years, the thing I still don't get is that everything cruel that can be said and has been said against Zutara romance can also be said against their friendship--and Zuko's friendships with the other characters!--and yet somehow friendship is always good and pure but romance would immediately make their healthy friendship dynamic bad and abusive???
But that's not how relationships work. If they can have a healthy friendship, then they could have a healthy romance. If any romance is inherently unhealthy, then the friendship must be inherently unhealthy too.
You've got the original writers saying women who think that Katara and Zuko should be together will forever have "failed relationships"... and then, at the same time, those same writers are like yay let's write them bonding and building a friendship.
People calling a brutally abused child who went on a redemption arc and turned against his father's ways a "colo/nizer" when it's a romance, but when it's friendship it's all good somehow. If lips never touch, it's not possible for a relationship to be toxic??? But if lips DO touch, then a healthy friendship based on mutual respect immediately becomes a Lifetime movie about toxic boyfriends...
The only way this logic works is if you think romantic love immediately "corrupts" or "taints" in a way friend love doesn't. And that's an incredibly ugly, sad idea to push.

the audacity you literally have to make a GENOCIDE SURVIVOR (whose entire culture was decimated by the fire nation) proudly work for the imperial fire nation army in some fuckass au? zutara shippers are never beating the colonial apologism allegations.
Woah, okay, I wasn't expecting this. I'm a firm believer that people should, first and foremost, treat each other on the basis of respect, so I'll do my best to explain this to you, clearly, and with the benefit of the doubt in mind, okay? I'm a nice person like that.
First of all, I'm working under the assumption that you haven't read these posts, and thus don't have all the information I've shared about the AU. I've been as clear about this subject as I can be, especially in my replies but, for the sake of fairness, I'll say it once again again:
I do not condone nor find it moraly correct to justify a victim of war joining the side of the ones responsible for her people's genocide.
I try to view this AU, and war in general, through a mature, realistic lense. Turning Katara into a victim with glorified Stockholm Syndrome isn't really my style. It's honestly insulting and deeply disturbing for me, as a creator, a woman of color born in a country that has a very, very long history of colonialism, and an empathetic human being, that anyone would believe me capable of thinking like that.
That being said, I know I really shouldn't, but would you like me to give you a step by step response?
(...) proudly work for the imperial fire nation army (...)
Okay, like I said before, I'm going to assume you saw only the artwork, didn't read either the tags or the two separate, in depth posts about the characterization and plot in this AU I made literally twenty four hours ago, and drew your own conclusions instead.
First of all: Katara doesn't proudly work for the Fire Nation army. That's her cover, as it is Zuko's. She joined Zuko and his crew, all traitors to the throne and good, honourable people, under the pretense of hunting the Avatar. Truly, they're destroying the Fire Nation military from within. And are, most definitely, not proud soldiers of the Fire Lord.
Katara hates the Fire Nation. But if joining a Fire Nation crew is what she needs to do to end the war, she will do it.
And, honestly, these are not excuses. But context is important, and it's not healthy to draw conclusions from the title instead of actually reading the book, if you know what I mean. It could get you in trouble some day.
And, please, I'm begging you—this has been talked about a lot, and I don't really like drama all that much, so I won't even rise to the accusations of condoning a non consented, colonialist and abuse apologist relationship.
That's just rude.

I think it's the ALMOST canon ships that get the best, most intricately woven, beautifully told fanfiction.
those nearly-kind-of-almost-maybe-could-be canon couples
the ones that make it almost painful to live with the knowledge that if just one or two things had happened differently, just one or two things: if one of them had said something differently here, done something differently there, or if certain events had shifted a little, just a fraction, they'd have been together - undoubtedly.
you can see it. everyone can see it. but it's not enough - they're still an almost-but-not-quite, maybe-but-it-was-never-confirmed, kind-of-but-annoyingly-ambiguous
fanfiction writers take their potential and they hold it close and they lovingly craft something amazing and beautiful with it - finally giving them the chance to be together like everyone knows they would be in-canon if the story wasn't against them
they spring out entire novels from canon-divergence in the places where just a little step in another direction could have led to them being together
they build whole intricate Alternate Universes where the characters are able to meet in an entirely different way and still fall for each other
what I'm saying is that the insanity of a ship where it was almost-canon drives writers to a specific kind of creative madness that produces the best fanfiction....
so if you check out my graph here you can see the line for the more almost it gets vs the more unhinged and motivated it makes the writers both rising in a wonderfully clear diagonal line and today I will be discussing the

Kataang on Balance and Rage
There's a common protest to Zutara especially that typically goes like this:
"If Zuko and Katara ever got together they would spiral into endless fights, since both are hot-headed. Because of these traits, they need someone who is calm. Like Aang and Mai. They balance them out".
I already adressed how Zuko and Katara seem to balace themselves out just fine, and that Katara isn't actually that hot-headed. There's a lot to be said about Maiko, and I will in another time. But for now, I'd like to focus on Kataang. This argument doesn't quite work for me because Aang is repeatedly proven to be unable to effect Katara's rage.
THE WATERBENDING MASTER
When Katara challenged Pakku to a duel, Aang tied to put up the fire. Telling Pakku she didn't mean that, and telling her she doesn't have to do this for him. Due to his peace seeking nature, he wants to pprevent the duel and is communicating this to Katara.
Tumblr media
(1th) Aang: I'm sure she didn't mean that.
(2th) Aang: You don't have to do this for me, I can find another teacher.
Did it work? Well,
Tumblr media
THE CHASE
The entire Gaang is sleep deprived. Katara and Toph get into a heated argument about unpacking camp. Aang tried to stop the argument, and once again it didn't work.
Tumblr media
THE SOUTHERN RAIDERS
This is an extremely controversial episode. I'm not gonna get into who's right and who's wrong. I'm just here to make an observation.
Katara decided to seek justice/revenge on the man who killed her mother. Aang, being a pacifit, encourages her to forgive him. He tells her a story about the monks, that revenge wouldn't help her. As you know, Katara still goes on the quest.
Tumblr media
Later when she spares Yon Rha, she highlights to Aang that she did not, and will not, forgive him.
Tumblr media
IN CONCLUSION: Aang tries to calm Katara down, but that doesn't seem to work. To suggest that Katara should be with Aang because he can balance her out would be a mischaracterization of their dynamic. He can't do that.

People come up with a lot of stupid reasons to criticize atla but saying that Kataang ended up together because thats what Aang wanted and that its not reciprocated is definitely,,,, interesting.
Did you watch the show???? have you watched kataras arch???? it literally revolves around feminism,
The same Katara that traveled across the world to learn water bending and challenged their best teacher to a fight because he wouldn't teach her because she was a girl???
The same Katara who blew up a factory? Who successfully led a prison break???
Katara is literally the one who kick started the entire series by sticking up for herself.
Thats the Katara you think folded and built a whole life with Aang because he wore her down?? You think Katara married and had children with Aang because only Aang wanted to?? You think Katara would let anyone, even Aang, pressure her into a relationship she didn't want?
Like it showed her setting that boundary. She defends herself just fine. I can assure you Aang did not harass Katara into their relationship.

Zutara Week Day 5: Respite
(everything is) blue
(Song Credit: Colors Pt. II by Halsey)
Destiny was indeed a funny thing, Zuko thought to himself through the haze of agony still overwhelming his senses.
A year ago, he’d wanted nothing more than to redeem himself in the eyes of his father, to find the long-lost Avatar and regain his honor.
An hour ago, he’d been determined to win back his birthright, so that he might ascend and be crowned Fire Lord.
And mere minutes ago, he’d been prepared to throw everything away, all of his goals and dreams and even the throne that was rightfully his.
All so he could protect her.
The waterbender who, until a few months ago, had been his sworn enemy, the ever-present thorn in his side whose determination rivaled his in protecting the Avatar from being captured.
And now, she was one of his closest friends.
An ally he trusted with his life, the member of their team who seemed to understand him better than anyone else.
And lately, the one person he couldn't live without...
But no, now wasn't the time to entertain those thoughts, he supposed.
As his bleary eyes gazed up at Katara while she continued to work tirelessly to salvage what was left of him, the prince exhaled a weak sigh of relief.
In the coming days, everything would change forever.
He would be crowned, charged with bringing his nation into a new world of peace.
She would no doubt leave afterwards for her homeland to rebuild, and there was no telling when their paths would cross again, if ever.
But for now, Zuko allowed his troubled mind a few minutes of respite, offering his savior a tired smile that she returned.
For now, he would cherish every moment spent with her while he still could.
“Thank you, Katara,” he rasped out.
She blinked back tears, smiling down at him.
"I think I'm the one who should be thanking you."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Over the last couple of months, I've been dusting off my (incredibly basic) video editing skills, hence how this project came about.
For the longest time I didn't know what to do with it, until I saw the @zutaraweek prompt list and thought, well, it could work for "Respite."
After the hellish journey they've gone through as enemies into friends, they finally find a moment of respite on the battlefield, a few precious seconds of peace.
Some of my favorite details:
The flashbacks of them as enemies are in gray
The moments between them once they're friends / allies are in color, mostly blue
The Southern Raiders moments start off in gray and gradually become colorized, signifying the growth of their friendship
"What can I do to make it up to you?" -> cut to his foot pounding on the tile, racing to intercept the lightning strike
"You're dripping like a saturated sun"
And of course, that moment at the beginning when Azula shoots the lightning
This is my only entry for Zutara Week 2023, so I hope you enjoyed!
Thanks for watching / reading! 💜
One word prompts: Butterflies
Thanks 😊
it’s not that he’s never had a crush. he’s had plenty of crushes—for agni’s sake, he had a steady girlfriend for years!
by now, he’s very accustomed to the awkwardness of first dates and first kisses and first touches. if anything, he’s well on his way to being quite experienced in those areas, thank you very much.
he’s fucking twenty-five years old. he’s not some child, okay—
“it is bad for your health to worry so much, my nephew,” iroh muses beside him.
“i don’t know what you’re talking about,” zuko grinds out.
he tugs at the collar of his formal robes, feeling the silky material cling stubbornly to his neck. fuck, did it suddenly get hotter?
“though,” iroh continues, as if zuko hadn’t said anything at all, “i suppose it is natural to be nervous when experiencing the throes of young love.”
“uncle—“
“announcing chief sokka and ambassador katara from the southern water tribe.”
zuko stiffens in place, heart suddenly hammering a thousand times faster than before and slamming itself repeatedly against his poor ribcage. servants sweep the doors of the palace open and suddenly, suddenly—
“now this is what i call a welcome party,” a familiar masculine voice echoes into the vast hall. a second later, sokka strides into the throne room with the same wide grin he’s had since they were fifteen. “you fire nation folk sure know what you’re doing when it comes to all the fancy stuff.”
in spite of himself, zuko grins back and is just about to respond (because trust sokka to know how to bombard straight through delicate situations) when the air seems to get sucked right out of the room.
“katara.”
she looks even more beautiful than the last time he saw her six months ago. those huge, cerulean eyes blink warmly at him from across the room and he can’t tear his eyes off the cute scrunch in her nose she gets when she smiles.
“hey, zuko,” she says, a glimmer of something in her voice.
“what the fuck. i’m right here, man,” sokka whines, and zuko chokes on a laugh, because fuck, he can’t seem to properly breathe, and his cheeks feel flushed, and shit—
the butterflies in his stomach just won’t quit long enough for him to catch his damn breath.
before he even realizes it, she’s wrapping strong arms around his torso, and squeezing—and well, that—that definitely doesn’t help with the butterfly situation. he finally hugs her back, accidentally crushing her with the intensity of his embrace, but if it bothers her, she doesn’t show it.
he’s sure she can feel his heartbeat through their smushed chests, and he’s pretty sure they’re starting to get weird looks from the palace staff…but agni, he missed her. her hair still smells like salt and cucumber, her frame is still so solid and unwavering, her tinkling laugh is still the most perfect thing he’s ever heard—
and okay.
maybe he’s had a couple crushes before, and yes, maybe he’s done the whole ‘girlfriend’ thing in the past, but wow—none of them come even close to comparing to how absolutely, devastatingly, damnably in love he is with her.
his stomach flutters almost painfully.
this is really starting to get out of hand, he thinks.
What scenes in Avatar The Last Airbender give you warm fuzzy feelings every time?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one, honestly. I love the culmination of their relationship in this sweet, reassuring little conversation - it shows how well they understand each other and how deeply they trust one another after everything they've been through together. If this same scenario had happened before Zuko and Katara reconciled in TSR, Katara wouldn't have gone out of her way to comfort and reassure Zuko when he's feeling uncertain about facing Iroh again, and Zuko probably wouldn't have taken her advice and reassurance quite as seriously. The fact that everything played out as well as it did really speaks to the strength of their friendship to me.
I don't wanna sound rude but I'm seriously starting to hate this person more and more as the time goes on. Atleast the other toxic zks don't hide behind a 'ship-non confirming' and 'knows what's best for all the characters' bush.
