Harringrove Week Day 1: Ghosts x Boarding School/ Billy's switchblade
The cold florescent light bounces off the switchblade in Steve's hand. Its handle old with use, he observes; standing by the sink he had found the old thing on. Laying there untouched, waiting for its return to its owner.
Steve looks for the lever to release the blade, see if it still works. He turns it over and finds it, along with an etching.
Billy.
Must've been the owner, Steve thought. Being on the much older and abandoned side of the boarding school, he assumes the owner must've long graduated already. Or dead if its older than he's thinking.
A chill raises the hair on the back of his neck, the light flickering somewhat. He brushes it off, the old building faulty enough as is.
He finally presses on the lever and blinks in surprise at the release. Still working.
Just like the handle, the blade shows signs of age: rust and stains sticking on it like imperfections. The stain in particular makes his brows furrow. He can't tell if its the slight rust but it smelled strongly of iron.
The lights flicker again, the old bathroom feeling colder than when he had come in. Steve's heart starts to stutter, but he couldn't take his eyes away from the switchblade. His gaze locked in and unable to notice how he's no longer alone in the abandoned room.

This time we're gonna see this through
Prompt: Steve Harrington’s closet during a spring break party
“I feel like this is a conspiracy,” Steve says. Billy slides down the length of the door and rolls his eyes.
“You think?” he says flatly. Steve tries the handle anyway, just to be sure. It just rattles, a sound that no one will hear over the thumping music.
“It’s locked, genius,” Billy says, with his eyes closed. Like it hurts to look at Steve. Maybe it does.
Which is fucked up, because Steve’s not the one who left.
“Those assholes,” Steve hisses, yanking at the handle. It’s his fucking party, and he’s been locked in here like a child with the one person he’d hoped not to see ever again.
“Those assholes are our friends,” Billy points out, and Steve snorts. Robin is going to pay for this. She owes him big time. And yeah, maybe she had good intentions. It’s been nearly a year and Steve has been less than himself for most of it. It’s been fine. It was a break up. He needed time to get over it and he’d thrown a huge spring break party to prove that he was not still fucking moping.
“Yeah, we’ll see about that,” Steve says, slapping his palm against the door. If he was a betting man, he’d probably guess that someone has also wedged a chair under the handle. They’re going nowhere.
So he chooses to stalk to the opposite wall and sit down. It means he has to look at Billy but anything is going to be better than feeling the heat of Billy’s skin and remembering when they used to lie together in Steve’s bed.
“How did you even end up here anyway?” Steve asks, because he thinks he’d remember asking Billy along to the party. Billy shrugs and tips his head back against the door.
“Heather,” he says briefly. Steve sighs. Right. He should have known that his best friend and Billy’s best friend probably kept in touch after. At least that was one relationship that hadn’t shattered.
“You knew it was my house,” Steve says, because this is the thought that has bothered him since he spotted Billy’s Camaro. He and Billy have very carefully kept to their own circles since that day in July. “Why did you even agree to come?”
“Heather wanted to,” Billy mumbles and he won’t meet Steve’s eyes. He’s fiddling with that scrap of leather around his wrist. It hadn’t looked so pathetic when he and Steve had been dating and the sad realization of how much time has passed hits Steve like a punch to the chest.
Steve wraps his arms around himself. He wishes he could hate Billy, after everything.
“Plus you did always throw good parties,” Billy says, with a flicker of something that looks like the old Billy. The one who arrived midway Junior year and immediately got into Steve’s face. Who wanted to be seen and wanted and…
Steve isn’t even sure who Billy is anymore.
“Damn straight,” Steve retorts. He just has to deal until Robin or someone comes to let them out. If Nancy finds out, she might take pity on Steve. And she only knows the bare bones of it: the break up, what happened after, and the horrible, awful truth of it.
“Heard from Hagan that you kind of fell out of the party scene,” Billy says carefully and Steve recognizes it for what it is. It’s the same kind of tone that Steve uses when he wants information out of Max. At least, back when he used to ask.
“Yeah, well…” Steve says vaguely, because what is he meant to say?
“Just lost interest in it,” he says finally, after the silence hangs around like the dust motes in the air. “Do you still work at Benny’s?” He knows full well that Billy does, and that chafes because Benny’s burgers are still the best food in town. He hasn’t dared set foot there, now that he no longer knows Billy’s schedule.
“Yeah,” Billy says, and stretches out his long legs across the floor. Steve discreetly shifts his left leg, trying to avoid Billy’s knee pressing into his own. “He offered to keep me on full time but I’m not here for long when I get that diploma.”
Steve’s heart sinks. Of course not. He never really expected Billy to stay in Hawkins but hearing it for certain is like a knife. What is it now? March, so there’s barely any time at all before Billy’s gone for good.
“Will you go back to California?” Steve asks, because he has to keep talking. He feels like he’s going to be sick, that this cupboard and the boy in it is smothering him. No amount of convincing himself that it’s a good thing will do. Because yes, it will be easier to breathe once Billy has gone, when he no longer has to keep checking over his shoulder.
But it means that they’re done and the small hope Steve has kept alive for the last year - that maybe, maybe they’ll get back together - has finally been snuffed out.
“Yeah,” Billy says quietly. He still won’t look at Steve, hands folded in his lap. It’s fine. Steve got pretty used to the idea that he was someone to be ashamed of, when Billy told him to his face last year.
“Good,” Steve says, and everything tastes bitter as he says it. “Good. I know you missed it.”
“You always knew I’d be leaving,” Billy says, and there’s a faint razor line in his voice. And oh, fuck him for getting angry. He has no fucking right to be angry about this. He dumped Steve and now he’s leaving.
“Yes, I did,” Steve spits. “It’s fine. Glad I’m not getting in your way. Jesus Christ, when are they going to let us out of here?” Because the music is still pounding and it feels very much like they’ve been forgotten. And he can’t even leave when they get out of here because it’s his fucking house.
“You weren’t in my way!” Billy retorts, voice rising and Steve finally snaps his head back to stare Billy right in the eyes for the first time since the door locked behind them. And he must be pretty fucking screwed up to miss this: the flush in Billy’s face as they fight, how gorgeous Billy looks with that wild look in his eyes. But back then their fights were always made up. Not this time. “You were never in my way! Jesus, Steve, I loved you. Okay? I fucking loved you and I always wanted to take you with me.”
Steve stares at him wordlessly, feeling as though all his strings had been cut. He’s not sure what’s worse - that Billy apparently changed his mind or that Billy used the past tense.
“Okay,” he says slowly. “Great. Good for you. Thanks for telling me.” Billy’s lip curls in a sneer.
“Is that it?” he hisses. There’s a faint glimmer of hurt on his face that Steve doesn’t quite understand.  “Jesus fucking…Fuck you, Steve Harrington!”
“You wish,” Steve bites out. Billy’s mouth twists and he slams at the door with a fist. Steve winces at the rattle. He wants out but not badly enough to explain to his parents why the door is broken.
“Guess I won’t ever see you again when we get out of here,” Billy mutters to his shoes. Steve feels bile crawl up his throat. So. That’s it then.
“No,” Steve says, trying to make it sound like he doesn’t give a shit. “No, I guess not.”
The door suddenly clicks and is yanked open, throwing Billy and Steve into sudden bright light. Steve blinks before he sees Robin and Heather’s curious faces in the doorway.
“So?” Robin asks expectantly, and Steve only feels crushing disappointment at the excitement on her face. Billy just stands up and pushes past them, without looking back once at Steve. Robin twists her head between Steve, still on the cupboard floor, and the rapidly vanishing Billy into the crowd.
“Billy!” Heather calls after him, her voice lost to the pounding music. “Wait! What happened?” She turns back to Steve, her and Robin wearing matching faces of confusion. “Didn’t he ask you?”
“Ask me what?” Steve asks, pulling himself up. His legs feel as though they’ve gone to sleep and he wonders how long they’ve been sitting in here.
“He didn’t ask you?” Robin demands furiously. “He was supposed to ask you!”
“Ask me what?!” Steve repeats, feeling a little like when he was in a ball pit as a kid. No matter how hard he tried, he always felt like the edge of the pit was too far away. It feels like that now, fighting constantly against a swirling mass, what he wants just a little bit out of his grasp.
Heather exhales, her face quietly disappointed. “Steve, what did you do?” she asks, quietly.
“Nothing!” Steve says defensively, instinctively. He used to fight with Billy a lot, about nothing, about stupid shit. Because it was part of who they were, because they enjoyed it. Because it ended in great sex. This was different. This is a fight where if Billy leaves now, he’s never coming back.
Steve looks up at two grave faces and feels like everyone else knows something he doesn’t.
“What was he supposed to ask me?” he says and Robin just shakes her head.
“Go ask him yourself,” she says shortly and disappears into the churning crowd. Steve watches her go, feeling frustrated.
“I don’t understand,” he says to Heather. He lost her too, when he and Billy broke up. People shouldn’t have to choose sides but somehow they always do.
“What’s new?” she mutters, dragging her fingers through her tousled dark hair. There’s glitter smeared across her collarbones, sparkling in the flashing lights above the lace edge of her corset.
“Heather!” Steve demands. He’s fucked up and he doesn’t even know how. “I don’t know what I did wrong! We were talking and then he said he was going to ask me to go with him…” Heather’s jaw drops.
“So he did ask?” she says, before her eyes turn cold and hard. “Fucking hell, Steve! Do you know how hard it was for me to get him to come here? He was sure that you hated him!”
But Steve doesn’t hear her.
Billy was supposed to ask Steve to go with him when he left for California? But he’d said it in the past tense…and so Steve had thought that Billy no longer wanted him to go. No longer wanted him. But that hadn’t been the case at all. Billy had come here and Robin had perhaps known that there was no way Steve would stop and listen unless he had to.
And it hadn’t worked anyway. Steve had heard Billy but he hadn’t listened. And now Billy was leaving, entirely certain that Steve didn’t love him.
Steve takes off at a run, pushing past the startled Heather. Billy’s had a good few minutes head start and he has to hope that the Camaro is blocked in. He skids down the corridor, shoves a few people on the stairs as he passes and accidentally treads on Patrick’s foot on his way out of the front door.
The front of the house is mainly empty, a few people hanging out on the porch under the twinkling lights. The driveway is packed, cars crammed in as close as they can get. The people who arrived first have no chance of leaving until the dozens of cars behind them have moved.
Steve leaps off the porch steps and weaves through the cars, looking for that familiar blue. He’s always loved that car. They’d had sex in that car. Kissed for the first time in that car. Lay out on the hood and watched the stars.
The Camaro is blocked in, by some piece of junk and a Toyota. Billy stands by the driver door, fiddling with a cigarette. Steve shouts his name and watches the shock on Billy’s face as he turns around.
“So you are stuck in,” Steve pants, because Family Video isn’t a hugely physical job. Jesus, maybe he should take up basketball again.
“Yeah,” Billy says shortly. He’s still twirling the cigarette between his fingers, like he can’t decide whether or not to light it. “Don’t worry, I’ll be gone soon. Hell, I can walk if needed.”
“Don’t,” Steve begs and takes a hesitant step forward. Christ, only he would have the man he loves come back to him and supremely fuck it up. “Please. Heather and Robin made me think that maybe I misunderstood you.” Billy’s jaw tightens.
“Maybe you did,” he says, leaning against the car. “Why don’t you tell me exactly what’s been misunderstood here?”
Steve licks his lips, looking for saliva and courage “I thought you were telling me you changed your mind. About me going with you.”
“Maybe I have,” Billy mutters churlishly, but there’s a delicate flush climbing his neck. Steve shakes his head. He’s pretty certain that’s untrue. It means that, despite Billy’s cold dismissal of him last year, Billy has always loved him.
“No, you haven’t,” Steve counters. “Do you? Want me to go with you?” Billy exhales slowly, and when he looks up, he’s the boy that Steve knew. Not the cruel one from last year, nor the one from the cupboard.
“Yes,” he admits. “Steve, I always wanted you to go with me. Robin wants to come too, but they knew that you probably wouldn’t if it was with me. I thought for sure after last year you hated me…”
“No,” Steve bursts out. “No. I didn’t. I didn’t understand why, but I didn’t.” Billy gives a sharp bark of laughter.
“You should have,” he says bitterly. “I deserved it. That was the worst way I could have…”
“Why did you?” Steve asks, edging closer. He resists the urge to shove his hands in his pockets, because there’s a bite to the air that he hadn’t noticed before. He wonders how Billy is standing there without shivering, before he remembers the constant warmth of Billy’s skin.
“Had to,” Billy says distantly. “I still had a full year of school left, even though you were about to graduate. Another year to live at home…” he cuts himself off but not before Steve catches his meaning.
“Neil knew?” he breathes, because Neil wasn’t supposed to know. They probably hadn’t been careful enough, given that most of Billy’s class, and a lot of Steve’s knew that they were together. All it would have taken was for someone to mention it to a parent and then for that person to mention it to Neil.
Neil didn’t care to have a gay son under his roof.
“So it had to be public and I couldn’t tell you,” Billy says, and the regret on his face is heart wrenching. “I wanted to but…” Steve nods. Billy’s life was already hell. If Neil had ever found out that he was still talking to Steve, life wouldn’t have been worth it.
“But you’re getting out?” Steve asks, because that’s clearly the plan. Billy’s going to turn eighteen soon, mere weeks away from graduating and being free of Neil. Billy nods, but he makes no mention of his former offer.
“He was going to hurt you,” Billy says, turning his face up to Steve’s. His blue eyes are huge in the moonlight, surrounded by full, pale lashes. Steve always thought that Billy’s distance this past year was down to indifference, rather than what it was. Guilt, regret, an act of protection. “I’m sorry. I just had to be sure it was public and he’d hear about it.”
Steve should hate him. The humiliation had been bad enough, being pushed away like he was something underfoot but the devastation had been even worse. The person he’d adored had just…stopped loving him.
“You still love me,” Steve says, unable to stop the dopey grin spreading across his face. Billy’s flush deepens.
“Yeah, well, you still love me,” he retorts. He stashes the cigarette away in a pocket, like it was a safety net that he no longer needs. He offers a hand and Steve doesn’t hesitate to take it.
It’s like they haven’t spent a year apart with the way that they fit together. Billy feels the same, from the soft spot under his ear, to the curls under Steve’s fingers, to the hips that slot into his. It’s fucking freezing but they kiss and kiss, under Steve can no longer feel his fingers and his mouth is a raw red.
“Come with me,” Billy breathes hopefully, struggling for the keys to open the Camaro. They can’t drive anywhere just yet, but they can make use of the backseat. The good kind of fights are made up with orgasms. Steve can pull Billy into his lap, like they used to, curled around each other to fit. Back then it used to feel like they were one person, connected all the way from head to heels to heart. No one will notice them while they take the time to relearn how to be together.
“Always,” Steve promises and shuts the door behind them.

Harringrove Week Day 7: Firsts
It was a garish, eye-melting riot of colour, pink and neon and almost unbearably cute. The sort of place that the Billy of two years ago would have fled from the second the door swung open.
But next to him Steve’s face was split across a megawatt grin, practically vibrating in his excitement, eyes darting ceaselessly as he tugged Billy impatiently across the threshold. It had taken hours to drive up to Chicago, weeks beforehand to plan everything out, and at twenty Billy was a far cry from the scared kid who would have turned tail and run.
Two years, two years of healing and growing and falling in love, and finally – finally – he got to bring Steve on their first actual date.
There was nothing in the word that could make him leave now.

I don’t know if anyone’s already done this but what about a Midsummer Night’s Dream AU with Eddie as Oberon, Chrissy as Titania, Steve as Demetrius, Jonathan as Lysander, Nancy as Hermia and Fem! Billy as Helena?
Basically, it’s about a pair of best friends who are dating two guys until one of the boyfriends decides he wants the other girl instead and he gets the parents approval to marry the girl. Instead of marrying him, she and her boyfriend run away into the forest where fairies live and they mess with everyone using love pollen since everyone ends up in forest. Everything is fixed in the end where they get married but they have a lot of chaos since the fairies dose the wrong guy and they end up in a complicated love square.

okay so like... now that i'm finally done with stranger things, what's the consensus on how people feel about it? cause like, imo it ruled*. the writing was strong. so many things came full circle. all the dynamics, all the friendships (both old and new) felt really fleshed out and developed, the aesthetic ruled, the horror vibes were truly bangin'. old plot points came back in genuinely meaningful ways. there were lots of laughs. the shenanigans were iconic. the aesthetic was on point. it wasn't, like, without flaw, but overall, man was I pleased!!! hell of a show.
*other than hopper's storyline, which dragged ass and felt like it was just to give joyce something to do this season lol

I can’t lie most songs I attribute to harringrove for a playlist are just like … songs I think they would sing to each other to be annoying or cute and have nothing to do with their actual relationship dynamic lmao

Roommates AU, Idiots in love | Rating: Teen | 5.1k
On Ao3
Billy's been in love with Steve since about twelve seconds after they met the day Billy moved into the dorms... Once they both graduated, they found jobs and an apartment. Sharing a space with Steve is both the best and the most frustrating thing in Billy’s life.  Because Billy is completely and hopelessly in love with Steve. Because Steve has no idea. Because Steve is straight.
Tumblr media
Billy closes the front door behind him with a relieved sigh. He dumps his keys in the bowl on the sideboard and toes off his shoes.
Today sucked. As if sleeping through his alarm and spilling his coffee on his clean shirt wasn’t enough, he missed the bus and was late for work. Then it just kept getting worse, work was endlessly piling up on his desk, his favorite lunch spot was closed, he dropped sauce on his pants. That was followed by an afternoon of playing phone tag with a couple of suppliers and to top it all off, it started raining on his walk home from the bus stop.
He strips down to his boxers, dumps his clothes in a wet pile on the bathroom floor and turns the shower on before getting a towel from the hallway cupboard.
He stops when he hears Steve’s voice. It’s unexpected because Billy is pretty sure Steve had a day shift today. He sounds angry but Billy can’t hear another voice so he must be on the phone.
“No, thank you, I’ve heard quite enough… Oh, yes, I’m sure… Whatever, dickhead… Uh huh… Yeah, have a nice life.”
Footsteps get closer and the door to Steve’s room opens before Billy has a chance to disappear into the bathroom.
Steve looks like he’s been crying, his eyes red, his cheeks blotchy, and he’s still wearing his teal scrubs.
“Oh, Billy. Hi. Didn’t realize you were home,” Steve says, startled.
“You okay, pretty boy? Do I need to break someone’s legs?” Billy feels a bit awkward standing there in his boxers, holding a towel to his chest. Exposed. He notices Steve’s gaze taking in his state of undress and it warms something in his chest. A spark of hope he quickly extinguishes.
He’s been in love with Steve since about twelve seconds after they met the day Billy moved into the dorms. Alphabet buddies, roommates and then best friends. Moving from the dorms to an apartment after they both got their degrees and found jobs seemed like a natural progression, splitting the rent and everything else. Sharing a space with Steve is both the best and the most frustrating thing in Billy’s life.
Because Billy is completely and hopelessly in love with Steve.
Because Steve has no idea.
Because Steve is straight.
Billy brings his focus back on Steve and the current crisis.
“What happened to you?” Steve asks, his hand gesturing vaguely towards Billy’s hair, his curls dripping down his chest.
“Started pissing down on my way home from the fucking bus. Then a car drove through a puddle a bit too close to the sidewalk and I got drenched.”
“Sounds like we both had shitty days.”
“You have no idea.” Billy just wants to have a hot shower and forget today happened.
“Wanna order in and watch Justified?”
“Sounds good, Stevie.” With a grin and a nod, Billy heads to the bathroom. The hopeful part of him likes to imagine Steve is staring at his ass but he doesn’t turn around to check. The bathroom is full of steam when he steps in the shower and he lets the hot water wash away his bad mood.
*****
Steve is sat on the couch, Billy on a cushion on the floor in front of him, the empty pizza boxes discarded on the coffee table, three sad looking pieces of garlic bread left in one of them. Steve is combing curl serum into Billy’s still damp curls with his fingers. He doesn’t remember exactly how long since he started doing this for Billy, it was sometime in their second year in college, but it’s become a calming activity for both of them on bad days.
Justified is playing on the TV, Steve doesn’t know how many times they’ve watched it over the years but it’s their go-to comfort show. No matter what happens at work, Steve knows that Billy will be there when he gets home to cheer him up with take-out, beer and their favorite Deputy US Marshal.
“Hey, Stevie?” Billy asks from his spot on the floor.
“Yeah?” Steve grabs the towel he left on the armrest to wipe his hands then he pats Billy’s shoulder twice to indicate he’s done. Billy moves up to sit on the couch, sprawling next to Steve, his toes wedging under Steve’s thigh.
“Ava or Winona?”
“Um… Gosh, I don’t know.” It’s been a while since they played the pick one game. Usually the choices are equally ghastly and the game ends in fits of laughter.
“Come on, just pick one.”
“I’m thinking!” Steve looks at the screen. They’re somewhere in season two, Winona and Raylan are tentatively dating and Boyd is boarding at Ava’s house. He thinks about both women and their motivations. “Ava.”
Billy lets out a low whistle. “Well, pretty boy, color me surprised.”
“Why? She takes no shit, rolls with the punches and adapts, and she’s very resourceful. Reminds me a bit of you actually.”
“Aww, Stevie.”
“It’s true.” Steve shrugs. “You got away from Neil and built a good life for yourself. Now we just need to find you a man.”
And maybe, just maybe, that man could be me.
The thought hits Steve and he freezes. He blames seeing Billy in his underwear earlier for the stray thought. He’s been doing so good ignoring them but it’s getting trickier, especially on nights like tonight when they’re both very tactile and domestic.
He got tired of telling Robin that Billy is his roommate and not his boyfriend, but it seems the more he answered her never-ending questions, the more she was comforted in the idea. It forced Steve to take stock of all the stray thoughts about Billy he’s been ignoring for, well, years, and untangle them all to realize something major about his identity. And his feelings. Something he has yet to share with Billy.
He’s not sure why he still hasn’t told Billy he’s bisexual. Every shift he’s had with Robin in the past few months, and every time they’ve seen each other outside the hospital, she’s asked him if he’d done it yet. He knows he should tell him, Billy is his best friend after all. But Steve isn’t sure he’s ready to rock the boat. Just because Billy is gay, doesn’t mean he’d be into Steve. And Steve would rather live with Billy as things are, than go through life without him, nursing a broken heart.
“Oh god, not you too,” Billy laughs as he kicks Steve’s thigh. “Heather is constantly on my ass about dating again and I am not interested.”
It’s a nice ass , Steve thinks, feeling his face heat up and hoping Billy doesn’t notice.
*****
It’s been a couple of weeks since Billy came home soaked to the bone and overheard the end of Steve’s phone call. Steve hasn’t mentioned anything but he’s been home more so Billy wonders if that means Steve is single again.
He was clearly dating someone before, even though Billy never got to meet whoever that was, which, weird. Steve tends to bring the women he dates to Friday night drinks with their group of friends, once they’ve made it past the three months mark.
They’ve taken to cooking dinner together when Steve is not working the night shift, and it’s really nice. Billy enjoys the close contact and the banter as they chop and dice and sauté. He misses it when Steve has a night shift, and always makes sure Steve has a plate of leftovers waiting for him in the fridge when he gets home.
Heather has been trying to talk him into going on a blind date with some guy her girlfriend knows. Billy told her he would if she let him meet said girlfriend, because they’ve been going out for months and Billy still knows nothing about the mystery woman. So far Heather hasn’t given up any information so Billy remains blissfully dateless.
He’s not interested anyway. He knows he should try and move on from his crush on Steve, but it’s hard to do when they live together, and he is not prepared to not have Steve in his life.
“You started without me.”
Billy turns around from the sink where he’s washing the vegetables for tonight’s stir fry. Steve is standing in the doorway, wearing Billy’s old UCLA hoodie and carrying a shopping bag. He looks tired. Billy smiles.
“Hey, Stevie, I wasn’t sure when you were coming home and you didn’t text. Sorry.” He nods towards the chopping board on the counter. “You can chop the chicken if you want.”
“Need to get changed first. I’ll be right back.”
They settle into their routine, working together to cook their meal, knowing what needs doing without having to talk about it. Once they’re sitting down on the couch with their food, and a drink, Billy puts Justified on.
“How was your day?” Steve asks and Billy shrugs.
“Tommy was his usual obnoxious self, Heather still won’t tell me anything about her girlfriend and the taco truck I like was back on our street. You?”
“Slept in, had lunch with Robin, we’re both on nights for the rest of the week, so that’s nice, makes it easier.”
“You were home late,” Billy remarks. He missed Steve, okay? Sue him.
“Sorry, should have texted you to let you know. We had lunch at that Japanese restaurant Robin never shuts up about, then she dragged me to the mall to find a present for her girlfriend for their six month anniversary and I had to talk her out of getting a kitten.”
“Oh my god!”
“Uh huh, then she tried to convince me a pet rabbit was the best idea ever.”
“Wow. Glad you were there to stop her. What did she get in the end?”
“Oh well, she walked into Victoria’s Secrets and I told her I was leaving.”
Billy laughs. “I thought you liked that shop. You were always there when you were dating that girl last year.”
Steve blushes. “That was different. I didn’t feel right discussing undergarments about my friend’s secret girlfriend!”
Not for the first time, Billy wonders about the odds of their friends both having a secret girlfriend, and if, maybe, Heather and Robin are dating each other. He told Steve about his theory and they paid attention during Friday night drinks but the two women didn’t even sit next to each other or interact all that much. Either they weren’t dating or they were really good at acting.
“Fair enough.” Billy puts his empty bowl on the floor and stretches. His t-shirt rides up, exposing a sliver of his belly and Steve’s eyes follow the motion. Billy tells himself it doesn’t mean anything, Steve is just reacting to the movement.
“Anyway, she decided to go back another time, and we found a coffee shop because I needed some caffeine after being at the mall for so long. And that’s when she ambushed me.”
“What do you mean, pretty boy? How did she ambush you?” Billy is confused. He turns around to face Steve, pulling his knees up to his chest and wrapping his arms around them.
“She asked about Sam and when I said we broke up a couple of weeks ago, she tried to convince me to agree to go on a date with someone she reckons is perfect for me.” Steve sighs.
Billy’s fingers dig into his calves. So he was right, and Steve is single. And now he knows the name of the girl Steve was dating. Not for the first time, he wonders if that’s who Steve was on the phone with that night it rained so much. Steve called whoever a dickhead, an insult typically thrown at males, so maybe not.
“What did you say?” The idea of Steve going on a date with someone who isn’t him makes him want to puke.
“Told her it was too soon.”
All Billy hears is that Steve didn’t say no. And really, he has no reason to say no to Robin. Suddenly Billy can’t be in the same room.
“Sorry, gonna head to bed, long day tomorrow.”
“Oh, okay.” Steve looks at him part surprised, part sad, making Billy’s heart squeeze in his chest.
He needs to get out of here.
***
Steve can’t shake the feeling that Billy is avoiding him. For the past three weeks, Steve’s dinner has been waiting for him when he gets home from a day shift. Every time there is a note from Billy stuck to the fridge, saying he is out with Heather or in his room with a headache or other vaguely believable reasons. And Billy always seems to be on his way out whenever Steve gets up before a night shift.
It’s starting to piss him off. He has no idea what sparked the change. And he hasn’t seen Billy in person long enough to ask him. Last night, Billy was blasting Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've) by the Buzzcocks, making Steve wonder if Billy had been seeing someone and it ended badly. The music was so loud that Billy didn’t even hear Steve knock on his door.
Maybe tonight will be the night they can sort it out. Steve is running late for Friday night drinks with their group of friends because he had to process a patient right before clocking out.
When he gets to The Upside Down, everyone is already there and Billy is in a corner with Heather, talking animatedly. They stop when they notice Steve has arrived.
Once again, Steve wonders what the fuck is going on with Billy, and why he won't talk to him about it.
“Hey, dingus!” Robin hands him a beer as he sits down next to her. “Was starting to think you weren’t coming.”
“Got delayed at work and had to stop at home first,” Steve says, taking a sip, eyes on Billy who is looking at his drink. “What did I miss?”
“Heather and Billy bitching about Tommy, mostly,” Robin replies with a shrug.
“We have news,” Nancy says, from where she’s sitting with Jonathan across the table, gathering everyone’s attention. “I, um, I got the job at the New York Times so we’ll be moving in the next month or two.”
The whole table erupts in happy shouts of congratulations. Steve feels a short pang of nostalgia at the thought that the dynamics of their group of friends will change, losing two of its core members. And now he’s worried about losing Billy on top of that.
“You okay, Stevie?” Robin asks, nudging him gently with her elbow and Steve sighs.
“Yeah… just… tired.” He keeps glancing at Billy, who is avoiding eye contact.
“Uh huh. Come help me get the next round,” she says, standing and looking at him expectantly.
Steve gets up and follows Robin to the bar, dreading the conversation he knows he’s coming.
Robin doesn’t waste any time once they get away from the table. “You told him yet?”
“Told who what?” Steve retorts, aware that his reply won’t fly with Robin. He wants to turn around to see if Billy is looking but resists the urge.
“Don’t do that. Don’t pretend you don’t know exactly what I mean,” she says, grabbing his wrist to get his attention. “You need to tell him how you feel.”
“Why?” Steve doesn’t see why he can’t keep secretly crushing on his best friend and roommate, instead of upsetting the status quo and risking everything. But then, the way Billy has been avoiding him makes him dread the day he’ll come home from a shift at the hospital and Billy will be gone, leaving behind a note, if he’s lucky.
“Because that man has been gone on you for freaking years and you’ve been too blind to see it. And because he, at the very least, needs to know you’re not as straight as he believes you to be.” Robin squeezes his hand. “And if you won’t, then you need to find a way to move on and let him go.”
“Rob…” Steve’s heart squeezes painfully at the thought and something heavy settles in his gut.
“You can’t keep going like this, sweetie. You deserve to be happy. You both do.”
Steve closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. Robin is right. He can’t live like this. He needs to do something . “Fine.”
“Fine what?”
“Set me up on that stupid date with that guy you think is so perfect for me.”
Robin stares at him for a long time before she speaks. “Are you sure that’s what you want?”
Steve shrugs. “Sounds better than losing my best friend when he inevitably turns me down.”
*****
Billy needs to get out before he punches a hole in the wall.
He was having a drink before he got started on dinner prep when Steve woke up after his night shift and sprung the news on him that he was going out. On a fucking date . It took all of Billy’s control to not hurl his beer bottle at the wall.
Now Steve is getting ready and Billy locked himself in his room, pacing and trying not to scream. If Steve brings the girl home at the end of their date, Billy might have to throw himself out of the window.
He grabs his phone and texts Heather.
hank, you busy
need to get out of here
steve going on a fucking date
why is this happening to me
the universe hates me
hank
holloway
heather
come on
i need you
please hank
i’ll jump out the window
Billy regrets having quit smoking because he’d kill for a cigarette, if only for something to do with his hands that’s not serial texting Heather or punching his pillow because he can’t make holes in the wall and risk losing the security deposit.
OMFG Blondie, calm your tits!
don’t tell me to calm down what if he brings his date home
i can’t do this i’ll pack a bag and move out while steve’s on his date
Jesus Fucking Christ, William.
First of all, you live on the first floor, so you’re unlikely to do much damage to yourself if you jump out the window.
you underestimate how much i can do out of spite
I would laugh at you so much before I called the ambulance.
you’re supposed to be my friend and you’re making fun of my pain
Ugh. Seriously, Billy, I’m out on a date with my girlfriend right now.
everyone is on a fucking date fine let me die alone
I swear to God, you are such a drama queen.
We’re at Enzo’s, come over, I’ll buy you a drink and you can crash my date, I guess.
oh so now i’m good enough to meet your girlfriend
steve just left i heard the door
Wear something nice.
why
Because Enzo’s is a nice place and they won’t let you in if you’re wearing your sweatpants and your ratty Scorpions t-shirt.
Clean button down and your nice jacket, if you please.
heather
William.
ugh fine
gonna have a quick shower first
If you must. Want me to get you an Uber? 20 mins?
yes please
thank you hank
love you
Love you too, Blondie.
Billy takes a quick shower and speeds through his hair care routine before putting on the clothes Heather requested. He’s ready and outside a couple of minutes before the car Heather ordered for him arrives.
He tries not to think about Steve and his date and attempts to distract himself by doom scrolling on Instagram. Steve posted a photo of a candle on a white table cloth in his stories. On the verge of tears, Billy closes the app and puts his phone in his pocket.
Heather is waiting for him outside the restaurant and hugs him as soon as he steps out of the Uber.
“You clean up good, Blondie.”
“Fuck off,” Billy says, but there’s no anger in it. He feels drained and heartbroken. Steve is wining and dining some chick and Billy wants to cry. He’s glad Max is away, cycling the length of New Zealand with Lucas, because there’s no way he could take her ‘I told you so’ right now.
“Come on. I’ll introduce you to my girlfriend.” Heather leads them through the doors and past the maître d’. Billy looks ahead and something clicks when he spots Robin in a booth at the back of the room. Someone is sitting across from her but he can’t see who yet because they have their back to the room.
“I knew it.”
“What?” Heather asks, glancing back at him for a second without stopping.
“You and Robin.”
Heather stops then and turns to face him. “What do you mean, you knew? You never said.”
“Both of you saying you have a mystery girlfriend you don’t wanna talk about? That no one can meet or know anything about?” Billy shrugs and manages a small smile. “I’m happy for you, but I don’t get why you felt you had to hide it.”
“Sorry. It was nice to keep it to just the two of us at first and then we weren’t sure how to tell everyone. Then it kinda became a game to see how long it would take you guys to notice and say something.”
Billy nods towards the booth where Robin is sitting. “Looks like I’m not the only one crashing your date night.”
“Oh,” Heather says, with a smile that Billy recognizes, it’s the one meaning she’s up to no good. “That’s your date.”
***
Steve is getting really frustrated with Robin. They’ve been sitting at Enzo’s for over twenty minutes and she still hasn’t told him anything about this mystery person she set him up with. She said her girlfriend is waiting outside to bring them in and encouraged Steve to enjoy his rum and coke and the complimentary breadsticks.
“Oh,” he hears a familiar voice say behind him, “that’s your date.”
He turns around and freezes on the spot, his hand gripping the table for support. Heather. Robin’s girlfriend is Heather . He remembers having many discussions about it with Billy but they could never decide whether the two were actually together or not.
There’s movement behind Heather and someone steps out beside her. Steve’s heart skips a beat. It’s Billy. He’s wearing that dark red button-down shirt that looks so good on him and his nice jacket. Steve feels his heart rate speed up.
Billy looks as confused as he does so Steve turns back to Robin. “Robin... What…what’s going on?”
“Well, Stevie, I told you that my girlfriend knew someone who’s perfect for you,” Robin says with a satisfied grin and Steve wants to shake her until she explains. He puts his hands on his thighs and squeezes them into fists.
This is not happening.
“What the fuck do you mean, Harrington is my date? He’s the one who’s on a date, Hank, not me.”
Hearing Billy refer to him by his last name hurts, like a knife through the heart. He hasn’t done that since the first months they lived in the dorms back in college, before they became friends. Steve never expected their friendship to end in a fancy restaurant in front of an audience but apparently this is happening now and there is nothing he can do about it.
Heather shoves Billy forward and Robin gets out of the bench seat so Billy can sit there instead. He does so only after Heather glares at him and Steve takes a closer look at him. Billy still won’t make eye contact with him and Steve can tell he’s clenching his jaw, like he does when he’s angry or frustrated. Before either of them can say anything, Heather puts both hands on the table and looks at each of them in turn.
“Both of you, shut it and listen,” she starts, Robin standing by her side, looking resolute.
“Hank—” Billy starts, shutting up when Heather lifts one eyebrow and gives him a withering look.
“No. This has gone on for far too long. I know it’s bad form to out someone but needs must. Billy, honey, Bambi here is not as straight as you think. I am not sure why he hasn’t told you yet, but I know that Robin has been on his case about it for ages. And you,” she turns to Steve and he sits up straighter.
The woman is scary, Steve isn’t afraid to admit it. He stays silent and waits to see what she’s going to dish out.
“If you can’t see that my boy here has been gone on you pretty much since he met you, I don’t know what to tell you.”
Robin puts her hand on Steve’s and gives him a light squeeze. “I told you the other night you couldn’t keep going like this. You and Billy need to talk. Take the time you need, enjoy your dinner and we’ll see you tomorrow.”
Heather pats Billy’s shoulder then she takes Robin’s hand, and they leave the two of them alone. Steve is reeling from the exchange, his mind stuck on what Heather said to him.
“Billy…” he starts, the words dying in his throat when he sees the haunted look on Billy’s face.
“Is it true?” Billy whispers, fiddling with the ring on his finger. His cheeks are pink and his shoulders curled up like all his confidence drained away.
It makes Steve’s chest hurt to see him like this. He reaches across the table but his hands stop just short of Billy’s. “Yeah, I’m… I’m bisexual. I, um, I was going out with this guy called Sam a couple of months ago but I broke up with him.”
“Why?”
Billy’s voice is just above a whisper, his eyes shiny with unshed tears and Steve wants to punch himself for putting them there.
“He wanted to, um, to go all the way, and when I said I wasn't ready for that yet, he decided to get it from someone else. I found out and dumped him.”
“Okay.”
“Billy…” Steve waits for Billy to look at him and this time he slides his fingers over Billy’s. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I guess… I guess I was scared.”
“Scared? Steve, I’m gay, what did you think I was gonna say if you told me?”
Steve breaks eye contact and looks down at their hands on the table. His reason for not telling Billy seems flimsy as fuck now. “I was scared I would tell you you’re the reason I realized I was into guys and you wouldn’t feel the same way about me. And you’re too important to me and I didn’t want to risk what we had.”
Billy laughs then, but it’s a wet, sad kind of laugh. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” Billy turns his hands over and links their fingers together. “Pretty boy, I’ve been in love with you since the day I met you.”
“You… you never said anything.” Steve feels his cheeks heat up.
“Steve, you always said you were straight. I didn’t see the point. It was hard enough when I knew you were actually in a relationship with someone but when you mentioned Robin setting you up on a date the other day, I couldn’t pretend to be okay with it anymore.”
“I’m sorry, Billy. I’m so sorry.” He can’t believe he almost missed out on this. Almost lost Billy. “I realized you were avoiding me but I couldn’t work out why. Every time I came home from work, I worried you would be gone for good. And it broke my heart.”
Billy must see something on his face because he leaves his side of the table to sit next to Steve, his arm going over Steve’s shoulders and pulling him close.
“Baby… I’m sorry. It hurt too much to be around you.”
Steve wraps his arms around Billy’s waist and buries his face in Billy’s neck, inhaling the scent he knows so well, taking comfort in it. After a moment, he pulls back just enough so he can look Billy in the eye. “I love you. I’m sorry it took me so long.”
Billy doesn’t say anything in reply, instead he moves his hands to cup Steve’s face and presses their lips together.
Steve melts into the kiss. He never wants it to end. He wants to climb inside Billy’s chest and live there forever. He finds that reality is so much better than any dreams he had.
A discreet cough behind them puts a stop to the kiss and they pull apart slowly. A waitress is standing by their table, holding a tablet to take their order. Steve looks at Billy, who nods with a smile.
“I’ll just… um, pay for the drinks, and we’ll be on our way, sorry for the trouble,” Steve stammers, feeling his cheeks heat up, trying to process the fact that he just made out with Billy in the middle of a fancy restaurant. Oooooops.
“That’s fine, sir, the tab for the drinks was settled earlier,” the woman says with a smile.
“Oh, okay.”
Billy squeezes Steve’s shoulder. “Let’s go home, pretty boy.”
Steve smiles before untangling himself from Billy and getting out of the seat. He feels Billy following as he gets his wallet out of his pocket and pulls a twenty dollar note from it. He hands the waitress the tip and thanks her before taking Billy’s hand in his and leading the way towards the exit.
They make out against the wall while they wait for the Uber that takes them home, and pick up where they left off as soon as they walk through their front door. They kick off their shoes and take off their clothes in record time then tumble in a tangle of limbs onto Billy’s bed.
Steve is naked with the man he loves and they’re kissing and laughing and dry humping like teenagers and he doesn’t remember ever feeling this happy and content with anyone.
Later, when they’re both sated after a couple of orgasms each, they pad to the kitchen in their boxers. Billy makes them chocolate mug cakes that they eat with ice cream under a blanket on the couch. Phones turned off to keep the bubble they’re in intact, they put on Justified.
“Hmmm…” Bill says, looking at the screen with a smirk.
“What?” Steve asks, half expecting what comes next.
“I guess I should have asked Ava or Boyd, really.”
Steve groans as Billy cackles, the blanket falling off them.
“Dick,” Steve says, punching him playfully in the shoulder. “Okay, Raylan or Boyd?”
Billy pretends to think about it, Steve can tell. Then he looks at Steve, all serious.
“You.”

Thank you, @ihni , for the baton! Without further ado, here's my contribution to the Harringrove Relay Race!
It's a little fic (that I'll post on ao3 later, when I'm awake and cosplaying as a functioning human) and that is very cleverly (not really) titled...
A Pirate's Life For Me
Billy's always known he wasn't lucky in life and this, right here, is the culmination of it all.
Not even two months at sea, working his ass off for a meager pay in the hopes of earning enough to exstinguish the debts his father and Chrissy's father put on their shoulders before dying, and his ship gets captured by pirates.
Worse: captured by the Dread Pirate Roberts, who has a reputation as a great swordman and a ruthless bastard who doesn't leave survivors.
Billy did his best in the fight, but he's just a farm boy turned deck swabber, his swordmanship goes very little further than "the handle goes into your hand, the pointy part goes inside the enemy". So now he's kneeling, hands raised, on the deck of the Panthaira, along with the rest of the surviving crew and passengers.
Well, with all the survivors except Captain Loman, who's huddled against the main mast. The Dread Pirate Roberts is crouched in front of the captain and talking to him in a low voice while the captain clearly draws his last breaths, shirt painted a vivid red with the blood gushing from the puncture wounds in his chest. Loman was a petty tyrant, so Billy is not exactly bawling his eyes out at the prospect of the captain being gone soon. It's just the principle of the thing that counts. The Panthaira has been captured, and, to put it mildly, Billy is fucked.
There are too many pirates keeping them under threat of more stabbing, and also no damn place to go even if he were able to escape the ship. They're in the middle of the ocean, nothing but water in every direction for hundred if not thousands of miles.
So Billy stays where he is.
And looks either at the back of the Dread Pirate Roberts or at the slow rising and falling of Loman's chest.
He waits and hates how his arms are getting heavier and heavier by the second. Soon, he'll be dead and, back home, Chrissy will have to mourn her best friend too, not just her parents.
Captain Loman's chest at last goes still and Roberts extends a careful, gloved hand to close the man's unseeing eyes, before turning towards his prisoners in one swift, elegant movement.
Robert's dressed all in black and wearing a mask, just like the stories say. He has long brown hair tied in a low pony tail, and dark eyes that sweep the crew and passengers of the Panthaira like he can weigh the wort of each of them with just one look.
Billy lets his hands fall down, tired of this charade. If he's gonna die anyway, what good comes from obeying? Might as well die with some feeling left in his arms.
Someone shouts at Billy to raise his hands again and he just ignores him. Roberts is walking their way, his steps slow and his attention pointedly fixed on cleaning blood off the blade of his sword.
Somewhere behind Billy, a woman starts weeping. One of the crew members pleads for his life. Another offers all the money he's got to be spared.
Bunch of cowards.
Roberts stops in front of Billy, ignores everyone else.
"You're not pleading," he says in such a voice and cold tone that the people around them fall silent, too scared of what's happening.
"I don't plead."
"Aren't you scared, boy?"
"To death."
Roberts grins. It makes the moles on his cheek dance.
"Should I bestow on you the sweet mercy of death, then, or not?"
Billy licks his lips and grins back.
"You should let me live, sir."
"And why should I make an exception?"
That's the true problem. Both Billy and Roberts know it, judging by the predatory look in his eyes.
Why, indeed.
"True love?" Billy tries.
Roberts laughs.
"She must be an exceptional lay, to make you believe someone will let you live only so that you'll be able to bed her again!"
"Wouldn't know, I've never wanted to fuck my best friend. Is there truest, purest love than the one that's never been tainted by lust or carnal needs?"
The Dread Pirate Roberts laughs even more and then shakes his head.
"Unbelievable," he says in a stage whisper. "What's your name, boy?"
"Billy."
"Well, Billy, I find myself in sudden need of a personal attendant." Roberts pauses for a beat, cocks his head to the side. Predatory is now an understatement for the look in those dark eyes. "Do a good job and one day you'll be able to return home to your best friend. Do a bad job, and your friend will never see you again. Are you interested in the position?"
Billy grits his teeth and never lets his gaze waver from Roberts.
The decision is so simple he doesn't even need to think about it. He nods and Roberts smiles.
Billy doesn't know what's in his future, but he'll do all he can to survive whatever Roberts throws his way and then return home. His best friend is waiting for him.

something for my fellow switch!harringrove truthers 🫶
They take turns. Whoever feels like fucking or being fucked, it doesn’t matter, they’re happy to do both.
And Steve does like to top, he loves taking care of Billy, and watching the blond fall apart underneath him is something that can and will get him to the edge within minutes, but sometimes he just feels…pent up.
Like, pushing Billy’s knees to his chest and lining up his dick isn’t going to cut it.
And he gets so goddamn desperate to get fucked that it’s kinda embarrassing.
He’s shameless about it, too, because he’ll pin Billy to the wall when they make out and slide a hand down his boyfriend’s body, rub the heel of his palm along the hard length of Billy’s dick in his jeans and whine out a pathetic little, “Please.”
And Billy likes to bottom, he does, but there is also something about his strong, bitchy boyfriend getting all soft and whiny for his dick that has Billy grinning so fucking smug. He hums a pleased little sound and rolls his hips into Steve’s touch, muttering, “You want it?”
Steve nods so hard that his hair flops around a little, bouncing from volume, so Billy reaches up to grab a fistful of it and pulls until Steve’s moaning with his head back and Billy leans in to lick up the length of his neck.
He hears another quiet little ‘please’ again from Steve’s lips and he moans in response, loves how easy and pliant Steve gets like this, willing to let Billy put him in any position he wants just as long as he gets his dick.
So, he smacks his boyfriend’s needy ass and grunts, “Upstairs,” with a smirk, just to watch Steve nearly trip over himself as he climbs up the stairs.
And maybe he’s a little cruel, because he fucks Steve through his first orgasm, laughing mean because it takes Steve not even five minutes to cum once Billy’s got both hands on his boyfriend’s lower back, hitting that perfect spot again and again.
“You serious, princess?” Billy breaths as he slows his thrusts, pushing deep until Steve whines and that’s when he reaches down to touch Steve’s dick, feeling the slickness of his cum at the tip. Billy grins, “Fucking slut,” with another huff of laughter as Steve buries his face into the bed, the tips of his ears red from embarrassed arousal.
Because Steve’s still hard, even though he just came.
So, Billy keeps fucking him. He flips Steve onto his back and leans over him, kissing his pretty boy’s mouth just to taste the moans Steve makes for him, strung out and sensitive.
“M’gonna cum,” Billy pants into his boyfriend’s mouth, feeling his stomach tensing as the feeling rises and rises - until he’s filling Steve with a groan, snapping his hips to make sure his boyfriend gets every last drop.
Billy pulls out with a huff and a lazy smile, softening his mouth when Steve pulls him down into another kiss.
Those big doe eyes look up at him as those pink lips whisper, “M’still hard…”
“I know,” Billy hums, pecking those lips because they’re all his, “Don’t worry, baby, I got a plan.”
“A plan?” Steve frowns.
“Yeah,” Billy grins, “Once I catch my breath, I’m sitting on your dick, and you can cum whenever you want.”
“You’re fucking crazy,” Steve laughs quietly, his dark eyes full of affection and lust.
And Billy does as promised. He falls to the side and hooks his thigh over Steve’s hip as he fingers himself open, lets Steve play for a bit because it feels good, until he pushes his boyfriend onto his back and climbs on.
“I don’t think I’m gonna last,” Steve huffs, his hands finding Billy’s hips.
“You’re gonna last,” Billy argues playfully, reaching between them to line Steve up before sitting back and down, breathing out slow and easy because Steve’s fucking huge.
He hears Steve’s soft gasp and moans, feels those fingertips digging into his skin with every inch he takes, and it feels so fucking good when—
“Fuckfuckfuck—Billy,” Steve tries to warn him, pushing at his hips, “Stop, m’gonna—”
Billy lifts his hips, feels Steve slip out, and then a hot little splash right against his hole.
He came the second he got inside Billy.
“Baby, I know I said ‘cum whenever you want’ but I didn’t think you’d cum this fast,” Billy can’t help but laugh in disbelief, “And you fucking came on my hole instead of inside me?”
Steve is blushing hard and covering his face, whining out, “M’sorry,” because he clearly had tried to stop it. He’s never cum this fast since their first time together.
It’s cute. And it would be disappointing, but Billy knows Steve can get it up one more time, from experience.
“It’s okay, stink,” Billy hums with a grin, leaning down as he pulls Steve’s hands away from his face, meeting those brown eyes with blue, teasing, “It’s not your fault my ass is so tight.”
Steve huffs a laugh at that and rolls his eyes, mutters, “Shut up,” as he lifts his chin in a silent request for a kiss.
Billy kisses him, gentle and loving, as he sneaks a hand down between them again to rub his cum-covered hole against Steve’s dick, humming, “C’mon, stud, I know you got it in you…”
And Steve does. He always does.

This is my contribution to the Harringrove Relay Race! ✨
⌚️ Show me you LO:VE me 🥀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Billy Hargrove. Punctual. Sometimes 15 minutes early. He beats the lines, beats the rush, beats someone's face in if they get in his way because Billy is never late.
Steve Harrington. Never on time. The party doesn't start 'til he walks in. He's 15-30 minutes late, almost always. Never finds parking, but never worries. Steve is always late.
Oh, but if Steve thinks he's going to be anything but punctual, he'll be everything but Billy's boyfriend.
Oddly, this was one of Billy's few dealbreakers. "Don't lie to me, don't show up late, don't waste my time. Being late for anything is wasting my time. So don't try it."
Steve knew Billy meant serious business. Billy never showed up late when they made plans. Steve wanted to impress Billy, so he did everything he could to show up on time, but on the one day, their most important day since they got together, there was a chance he was going to be late.
If Steve showed up even one minute late for this 6 monthiversary dinner, Billy would think Steve didn't take their relationship seriously.
Billy already had trust issues. The first time Steve said I love you, Billy side-eyed the fuck out of him, interrogated him, threatened to punch him, cried, then finally said it back.
This night had to be perfect.
As he was getting ready, Steve accidentally used cooking spray instead of hairspray in his hair.
"How'd that happen?!" Robin exclaimed when Steve called her in a panic.
"No time to explain, but I really screwed up. I smell like a kitchen!"
"Go wash your hair, dingus."
Steve groaned. "I hardly have time."
"Make time! Go! Go!"
Steve hung up the phone and rushed into the shower, eventually washing the oil out of his hair.
He half-assed his hairstyle and got his clothes on, then hurried to his car with a rose in hand, rehearsing what he would tell Billy when he picked him up.
"You look nice, your eyes look exceptionally blue tonight—wait, he might think that's cheesy. Maybe I should just tell him he looks good—" Steve yelped when one of his tires blew out, and he pulled over on the side of the road, staring at his car in disbelief. "Oh, you've gotta be kidding me!"
He glanced down at his watch. He had 2 minutes to get to Billy's house, which was 15 minutes away by car.
He sighed, he pondered, and then he started running.
He'd be damned if he let Billy down. Billy never let him down, not once. He showed up, he showed out, he kept his word and he loved Steve with his whole heart. All he wanted Steve to do was fucking show up on time.
Steve ran and ran, breaking a sweat in his blazer, crushing the stem of the rose in his hand, the thorns pricking his sweaty palm.
When he finally reached Billy's house, it was nearly 30 minutes after the time he agreed to pick Billy up.
"Aw, shit, he's gonna be pissed." He knocked on the door, heaving and trying to catch his breath so he could profusely apologize to Billy.
"Oh, now you show—why are you breathing so heavy?"
Steve stood up straight, his bangs dripping sweat beads as he heavily exhaled. "I'm...I'm so sorry. My...my tire blew out and...I...accidentally put cooking spray in my hair instead of hairspray...but...I tried...I really, really tried to get here on time. I ran...all the way here."
Billy glanced down at the rose tightly gripped in Steve's hand. "You did all that for me?"
"Course I did, babe. All you asked me to do was...show up on time. I wanted to...do the right thing."
Billy chuckled, eventually breaking out into a fit of laughter. "...You put cooking spray in your hair? God, you're such an idiot!"
"I left it on the counter the night we baked cookies, and I went in the kitchen to check the time, because I couldn't find my watch, so—" Steve waved his hand. "Never mind, I'm an idiot."
"But you're my idiot." Billy pulled Steve in for a kiss. "And you stink."
"C'mon, I ran all the way here." Steve pouted.
"I know. Let's get you in here and cleaned up."
"You sure? You're not pissed at me?"
Billy shook his head. "You made a hell of an effort for me, pretty boy. That's all I wanted." He grabbed Steve's hand. "Now c'mon, Neil's not here so we can hop in the shower together."
"Wow, I'm late and I get rewarded?" Steve cheekily smiled.
"Don't push your luck." Billy yanked him into the house and closed the door.

“I hate you” Harringrove? I’m so gay.
Detention.
With Billy Hargrove.
Steve wants to scream and it's all Hargrove's fault. Because they tackled each other too hard and too often during practice. Because Billy shouted "plant your feet, Harrington" and Steve lost it for once and yelled "I'll fuck you over next time".
Did anyone ever get detention playing basketball? A week before their last game ever? Before school is over in only a few weeks? This a new low for Steve.
Worse even, it's Friday and the whole school is deserted already, so now he sits in a stuffy classroom next to Billy.
"I'll be back in an hour," Coach says, grabbing his mug of coffee that vaguely smells like liquor. "You two will come up with a list of reasons why team play is important."
Once the door closes behind him, Steve groans. "You have to be kidding me. A list?"
"I can think of a lot of reasons why team play is important, but we aren't a fucking team," Billy snaps. "I should write an essay about Harrington's Inability To Stand His Ground."
"Maybe you should add a guide on how to use every possible foul in one half time." Steve rolls his eyes.
Billy stands up and comes closer. A wild look in his eyes.
"It's not my fault that you don't plant your fucking feet."
"Bodycheckin' isn't allowed. It's basketball," Steve yells, getting up as well. "You should fucking behave."
Billy's face turns red from anger. "Don't talk to me like that."
"Like what?" Steve steps forward, pushes two fingers against Billy's chest. Of course he's wearing his shirt unbuttoned. Steve wonders why he's bothering with a shirt at all. Always showing off his stupid, admittedly nice, pecs.
"Like I'm a child."
"You're a fucking brat," Steve huffs. Billy's flush turns crimson. It makes Steve get a very dangerous idea.
"I hate you," Billy growls. "Stop talking to me like that. I should punch you in your -"
Steve manages to shut Billy up. For the first time ever. With his mouth pressed against Billy's. Shoving his tongue in his mouth and yanking his mullet.
Billy gasps and Steve uses his surprise to bite his bottom lip. Billy's breath gets ragged and Steve kisses his neck, sucks on the tender skin underneath his collarbone. Enjoys Billy shivering from his touch.
Steve bites into the soft flesh just a bit above Billy's belly button. Billy moans. His eyes are closed and he aches his neck. He looks almost peaceful like that. Steve wants to see him like that more often.
He pulls down Billy's pants. Kneads Billy's firm ass that the whole school keeps staring at. But only Steve gets to touch.
"I can take it," Billy grunts, leaning a little over the desk so that Steve can reach him better.
"Well, aren't you a team player?" Steve laughs. He spits on his fingers and pushes two into Billy's hole.
"More. Faster." Billy's voice is hoarse.
"Nope," Steve says, scissoring his fingers apart, in very slow, lazy movements. "Behave."
Billy shudders, but bites his lips. Keeps himself from moving even though his cock twitches with every push of Steve's fingers.
Steve pulls his fingers out. "You ready?"
"Of course," Billy growls.
Steve presses his cock against Billy's hole. He's big and the spit can't be enough. But he sinks in slowly, until he's completely buried inside Billy who groans and clutches the desk like his legs can't carry him anymore.
"You're fucking huge," Billy gasps.
Steve moves his hips forward, grabs Billy's thighs and thrusts hard.
Billy comes, crying out and without Steve touching his dick. Shooting come all over his abs. After one thrust. It's the hottest thing Steve has ever seen.
"Fuck," he breathes. "Has nobody ever fucked you before?"
"Not in In- Indiana," Billy slurs.
The thought makes Steve dizzy. Nobody he knows has ever touched Billy. Only Steve himself.
It's fast, it's hurried, it's messy. Steve loves every second. He pulls Billy's blond curls again and he whimpers. He fucks him harder and faster, Billy's overstimulated mewls a symphony in his ears.
Maybe it's not even Billy's tight ass, moans or toned body. Maybe it's the thought that only he fucks Billy Hargrove, that Billy Hargroves behaves, that Billy Hargrove comes within seconds, because Steve wants him to.
Steve's orgasm hits him right in the moment of realization and he pulls Billy's hair again, listening to the sweet sounds he has never thought he'd hear from Billy of all people.
"We still need to write that list," Billy says, putting his jeans back on. He buttons his shirt until a bright red bite mark is hidden underneath.
Steve reaches out for Billy's shirt and opens a few buttons again, so it's fully on display.
"I think I did my work already here."
He presses his fingers against the mark. Billy groans, a bit breathless.
"I hate you." It doesn't sound sincere.

This is a super rough draft and I'm working to polish it up for AO3 but have some childhood friends who kissed (no homo) second chance romance(?) Harringrove
I haven't posted anything in forever and this idea took over my body so uh I hope you like it? If you don't? Don't tell me lmao
Now I'm thinking about childhood friends Steve and Billy who practice kissing and whatever it's totally not gay. But Steve is like imagining their life after high school together, how they're gonna go to the same college and be roommates. Maybe if they get to kiss sometimes still that would be fine.
He tells Billy about it cause they're best friends and they tell each other everything. He thought Billy was on board. He helped Steve study, made sure he graduated.
So he's a little surprised when he gets to the school and Billy's Camaro isn't there cause he was running late but Billy always did like to make an entrance. Except Steve keeps checking down their row in the stadium and Billy never shows up. Doesn't come running onto the field when they call his name.
When he goes to return the cap and gown and pick up his diploma after the ceremony, the lady at the table check's her list and tells Steve "Looks like Billy picked his up the last day of class."
There's a big hole in the middle of Steve's chest that never really quite goes away. Not through college and parties or meeting his wife and getting married. Having his kids helps a bit but it's always there, sharp and jagged just like the boy who made it.
Steve focuses on work and raising his kids and maybe that's why his marriage falls apart. His wife handed him a big Manila envelope with sadness in her eyes. "You're a great dad and there's a part of me that will always love you, but I don't think you ever loved me, Steve, and I deserve better than that. We both do."
He agreed to everything, got split custody, and moved into an apartment in the city. It was beige and empty, but he covered it with pictures of his kids and ignored the way the hole in his chest started crumbling inward, growing every morning he woke up to silence until he felt hollow.
Steve got the kids for the summer and rented an RV. They were driving to California cause the kids had never seen the Pacific, he told his ex. She shrugged and sent them all off with hugs and kisses on the forehead. If a tiny voice in the back of his head called him a liar, he ignored it.
They ate at hole in the wall diners off the highway, but Steve splurged on hotels with pools cause sue him he was too high maintenance to live without soft sheets and good shower pressure.
Somewhere in Kansas or Colorado, Steve couldn't remember where they were right then, he saw the gas gauge getting low and pulling off at the next exit to find a place to get gas.
Steve almost ran a red light when he saw the sign at the convenience store on the corner. It had his brain lighting up like fireworks, memories of a past he didn't normally let himself think about crashing against the inside of his skull like waves.
There was no way. It was just a coincidence. He made sure the kids were fine and swung into the parking lot after the light turned green. "Dad's just a little tired. We'll find a place to check in after I fill up the tank."
The gas pump was old fashioned, not a single card reader in sight, and Steve shook his head with a chuckle, before rounding up the kids and heading inside. They dumped way too many snacks on the counter when they got to the front of the line. "Can I also get $40 on pump 3?" here told the guy behind the counter who was restocking cigarettes.
Short blonde hair, wide shoulders under a worn t-shirt, jeans so tight they molded to his ass and had Steve biting the inside of his cheek because he was in public, for fuck's sake.
He had to be really hard up if he was on the verge of making a spectacle of himself over some rando in a gas station. A grunt and the guy turned, pinning Steve with the brightest blue eyes Steve had ever seen.
Ones that haunted his dreams. "Billy?" he whispered, wallet slipping out of his numb fingers.
The guy who couldn't be Billy blinked at him, except he said, "Steve."
Robbie tugged on the hem of his shirt. "Who's that, dad?"
"Dad?" Billy repeated, sounding confused and a little accusatory. And seriously, fuck him.
"Just someone I used to know." He needed to get out of there before he made a scene of a different kind by jumping over the counter and punching Billy in his stupid, perfect face. "How much do I owe you?"
Billy's frown deepened. He bagged up all of the snacks, no longer meeting Steve's eyes and said, "Don't worry about it" when he handed them over.
Nope. He was not making it that easy. *You left. You left me. Why did you leave me?* clamored to get passed his lips, but Steve refused to be that pathetic when Billy obviously hadn't cared as much as Steve. He got his wallet off the floor and slapped his credit card on the counter, handing the kids the bags to hold.
Billy rolled his eyes, the way he had whenever they were kids and Steve did something Billy thought was stupid. They stood on silence except for the chatter of his kids and the bell chiming over the door when someone else came in. Steve took his receipt without a word.
"Come on, you two, let's go." He herded the kids toward the door, determined to walk out on Billy the way the other man had walked out on him, but Steve never did have much self control.
Billy was still watching him and their eyes met when Steve looked over his shoulder. "You know a good hotel around here?"
"There's a Best Western a few blocks down. Nicest place in town."
Was he imagining the question in Billy's eyes? Steve didn't know. Grace whined, "Come on, dad," the way only teenagers could and Steve let the door swing closed behind him.
Part of Steve was anticipating the knock at the door after the sun had set and the kids were both curled up in their beds. The other part called him an idiot for still holding a torch for the guy who broke his heart.
The rap on the door was soft, but Steve still jumped, tripping over his feet when he got off the couch.
There was Billy on the other side of the door, a cigarette dangling from his lips, hands shoved into his pockets.
Mindful of his kids, Steve stepped outside, leaving the door cracked behind him, while they stared at each other, the weight of all the years between them.
Billy broke the silence first, pulling the cigarette from his mouth, ash flicked from the tip in a cascade of sparks. "Where's Mrs. Harrington?"
That was about all Steve could take. He shoved at Billy's chest, still as solid as it had been back in high school, the prick. Billy didn't budge an inch. "I got divorced last year."
Billy took a long drag, a quiet "Shit" exhaled on a cloud of smoke.
"Yeah." Steve took the cigarette from Billy like they used to. He hadn't had a drag in years and almost choked.
There was no laughter, no jibe at Steve forgetting how to smoke. Instead, one of Billy's hands rubbed circles against Steve's back. Just that one touch unlocked something in Steve, all the years of longing, of loneliness, of regret. He wrapped his free hand around Billy's waist and tucked his face into the other man's chest.
"Why?" It came out garbled and wet from his tears but Billy understood all the same.
His answer made his tears run faster. But it was okay because size Billy's arms wrapped around him, holding Steve together. "Because I loved you too much."
"You're a fucking asshole."
"I know."
"I loved you too."
"I know." Of course he had.
They stayed like that until Steve got himself back together, the cigarette left to snuff itself out on the concrete. His eyes red and puffy and Billy wiped the moisture off his cheeks with his thumbs.
Steve leaned into Billy’s calloused palms, pulling the scent of Marlboroughs and warm skin into his lungs. He sniffed loud, echoed by the crickets and the distant traffic. He needed to say something or else he’d start crying again because Billy was looking at him the way Steve always secretly dreamed Billy would look at him one day.
He wanted to know what the hell he ‘loved him too much’ to stay meant, but this thing—could he call it a thing? Robin would probably call him a dingus right about now—was too shaky, like a house built on a cliff during an earthquake.
So instead, he said, “You know I meant why’d you pick that name when I asked why, but thanks for the declaration, I guess.”
Steve felt Billy’s chuckle where their chests still touched. “Now who’s the asshole?”
And, okay, Steve really was curious because Billy had to be the one who owned that place and had the balls to slap Pretty Boy on the front of a building.
Which meant he thought about Steve and the nickname he bestowed upon him enough to name his business after him. To have to see it every day and think about Steve.
So he was curious, but not enough to stop and ask when Billy was angling Steve’s head with the hand still holding his cheek to press their lips together.
It had been decades since the last time Steve and Billy kissed and it was still the best feeling in the world. The feeling of a full beard was new, but Billy’s hands felt the same, cradling the back of Steve’s head, the other pressed low on his back.
He still tasted like cigarettes and the mint gum he liked to chew.
Steve didn’t pull away until he heard the bathroom door close inside the room and even then he didn’t go far, pressing their foreheads together so they were still sharing the same air for as long as possible.
“How long are you here for?” Billy whispered, like he was afraid if he spoke too loudly, he would shatter the moment like spun glass.
“Just until tomorrow. The kids and I are going to California for the summer.” Saying it out loud, in front of Billy, made it feel like a dirty little secret. Billy knew why Steve was going there of all places if they way one side of his mouth kicked up. Steve had missed that smirk. He’d missed a lot of things if her were being honest.
“Maybe you can swing back through on your way back.”
The hopeful note Steve heard made him feel bold, reckless. “You should come with us.”
“What?”
“To California. You should come with us. I got an RV so there’s plenty of room. We could take turns driving. Grace and Robbie are cool kids, I swear. I’m realizing now that I said that that it’s kind of weird. Forget it—” His nervous rambling was cut off by Billy’s lips.
“Shut up, pretty boy. I’ve been wanting to go to California with you my whole life.” And, oh. Well, Steve was done for. His hands curled into the fabric of Billy’s shirt, holding on for dear life, scared if he let go Billy would disappear. “Besides, I should probably get to know your rugrats before I ask their dad to marry me.”
Steve's eye went comically wide and his heart stopped and that hole in his chest felt like Billy had slapped a patch over it. He wheezed. “Huh?”
“You think I’m letting you go again, Harrington?”
That was fine with Steve.

Things I love to read in Billy and/or Harringrove fanfiction:
(Inspired by @grey-sides and in the hopes of spreading some love)
Billy and Max overcoming their problems to form a united front and start working together, and become better siblings to each other.
Realizations. The "oh" moments. The "oh shit" moments, the "oh fuck" moments, the "oh no no no..." moments. ALL the realizations! (So, like ... the boys finding out they're into each other, anyone finding out about Billy's home life, Billy finding out about monsters, both of them finally seeing another - more vulnerable - side of each other, etc etc etc)
This whole post
Billy getting to fight monsters too, especially if he can use it as an outlet for all that aggression and be badass and save people's asses and then be all blasé about it like "what? it's not like it's hard" *hair flip* (also Billy and an axe will NEVER be over-played!)
Physical whump (bruises, blood, hiding injuries, fighting, being pushed up against surfaces, threats, hands grabbing faces and throats and hair, being made to kneel, incapacitation, fighting through exhaustion/illness, manhandling, etc etc. I'm a whumper at heart, I want to inject all these things into my veins).
Emotional whump (being left out of things/ostracization, feeling lonely, overhearing something hurtful, keeping a straight face even though you're hurting inside, not expecting someone to come and save you when you're hurt/captive etc etc - ie my bread and butter).
Billy patching himself up (BOTH phisical and emotional whump, so, like a double-whammy!)
Billy in the upside down, as a very capable survivor. Give me Cast Away, only with Billy, and the Upside Down instead of an island ... ALL THE VERSIONS of that. I like my boy capable, and fighting for survival (I'm normal, I swear)
This post
Billy being touch-starved. I eat that up with a SPOON, all versions of it but especially the ones where he gets touch (angsty version; it's not a good kind of touch but he seeks it out anyway, fluffy version; he gets all the pets and hugs!)
The boys coming back from the upside down and having gotten used to being close, so they get anxious when they don't have eyes on each other (yes I've written it. yes I've read it. yes I love it)
Having to share a room/doing a project togehter because their last names both start with H. Like forced proximity, school version. Mmmm, delicious.
When Billy is ridiculously weak for Steve and would do anything for him (especially if Steve has no idea about he power he wields). Basically Steve as the Billy-whisperer.
Billy getting good parents. I don't even care who at this point, I'll read all of them: Joyce, Hopper, Claudia, Mr Clarke (Mr CLARKE <3), Bob, Flo, that grumpy librarian ... Just give him good parental figures (and let him STRUGGLE with accepting that he's finally safe!)
Scars. All the fics about scars. Angsty scars, proud scars, mental scars, scars on the skin, first time someone is allowed to touch someone else's scars. Just, <3
Badass, BADASS moments, by both Billy and Steve. Smashing demodogs to pieces, rescuing themSELVES from bad situations, etc.
Guilt. <3 That usually comes after the realization moments, but mmmmm, a side of guilt to that? Fucking delicious, I will live off that for weeks. Like, having someone realize what Neil is doing and then feeling GUILTY about it (maybe they caused Billy to be hurt, or maybe they made it worse, or maybe a beating could have been avoided if they'd acted differently), that's my JAM.
That moment when Billy/Steve start calling the other by their first name instead of their last name ...
Self-sacrifice (filed under whump, but can be both physical, mental or simply implied). There doesn't even have to be a real threat of getting hurt, the self-sacrificing idiot (I prefer Billy) just have to THINK there is.
Basic needs not being met ... until they are. (So, say ... Billy being hungry, thirsty, tired, thrown out of the house ... and then finally getting to eat, drink, sleep, get inside)
