Hunter is afab transmasc. Not entirely a trans man, but never, ever fem or she/her. A Boy™️ if you would. Strictly uses he/him.
He’s bi. All Clawthornes are bi By Default.
He actually stays pretty short. 5'5-5'6 at best.
Other hobbies he takes up after the end of the series aside from Palisman carving are cooking & baking, and he keeps up with sewing as well, furthering it with embroidery and knitting too. He also likes birdwatching in the human realm, hyperfixating on all the different species there are to learn about and see.
Once he gets to attend Hexside he follows in Luz's footsteps, studying every course of magic he can.
Definitely has chronic pain.
Is obviously on the committee to help rebuild the Isles and rework their system of Government. The entire Hexsquad are actually viewed as an almost celebrity status on the Isles whether they wanted that or not.
He carves Waffles not too long after the end of the series & taking up Dell's offer of mentorship. I've seen some people think it took him years to carve a new Palisman, but I really don't think it could've taken that long. A lot of time and thought and dedication? Yes, but not far from the end of the series.

me finishing the new graphic novel like on the one hand yes the art is gorgeous as always yes the chalice scenes were handled well yes the lunar interludes got included in a cool way but on the other hand me looking at ren (and also a bit at taako by proxy) like
#taz gn spoilers#taz negative#kind of??? more like taz mixed bag#taz gn negative in contrast to taz original podcast positive#i just feel like in combining ren's role in the story with redmond's her connection to taako was undermined significantly#and i worry that taako's ending as it is in canon is going to ring hollow with her characterization being so radically changed#also it seems to me like taako has been... flattened a bit? and all the missing moments with ren go a long way to highlight that#like in the podcast he has moments of absolute assholery and lots of goofs at other people's expense and eleventh hour has plenty of that#but he also has moments of shining kindness and deep sadness that stand out all the more in contrast and add depth to his character#and what this installment of the graphic novels has done is cut down taako's dick moments but also all his most heartfelt ones#like... where was taako being affected by the fact that ren loves his show when he can only remember that it ended in tragedy?#where was taako realizing that ren died in the bank heist and trying to save her even though he knew the loop would reset anyway?#and where the fuck was ''i've been watching the whole time'' ???#like to be frank this has kind of shaken my confidence re: how the adaptation of the last three arcs will resolve#bc if this much emotional ground is being conceded to narrative utility i worry that the ending won't have any left to stand on

In reality - not really! There are plenty of characters that I wouldn’t be able to stand in real life, but as fictional characters in my ears they are all fun little guys. Even the ones who have done objectively terrible things on their own tend to be compelling or fun characters, and many others were quite literally being compelled by forces beyond the scope of their universe. Which is interesting!
I also just like the humor style, so mostly when there’s a would-be “annoying” character, they’re played in a funny way that is never really grating for me personally.
The closest thing I have to a “real” answer here would be, like, Kalen or Sazed, but those are mostly offscreen characters who are designed to take a fall as being immoral, so. Shrugs

Lup's terms of endearment

Lup is a character that it takes a lot of practice for me to write, but there's a particular calling card for Lup that jumps out both from her canon dialogue and from fanon, right? We all know it: Lup absolutely loves to call people "babe".
But... when I'm writing her, I also end up wondering if I'm overusing any given signature vocative, or other element of her speech. After all, fanfic writers, myself very much included, are always looking for quick effective ways to make characters sound like themselves — and in a case of a character like Lup, peppering in a "babe" often seems to work like a charm in terms of making her more Lup-like, especially if you're writing Blupjeans.
The thing about this vocative-centric, vocabulary-centric approach to character voice is that it can, at least theoretically, lead to us overdoing it, and overshooting how the amount that Lup would use "babe" in canon. Which isn't a big deal, it's just fic — but I'm very hyperfixated and I love Lup very much, so I wanted to break down a some of when, where, and why she uses "babe" and other terms of endearment, as well as other little nuances I noticed.
Continuing under the cut, but the tl;dr is: Lup absolutely calls people "babe" a lot, but it's not exclusively romantic, it can be either sincere or teasing in tone, and she tends to do so more as time goes on, not so much at the start of the century.

The first thing that jumps out at me is how back-loaded, for lack of a better term, the use of "babe" is among all Lup's appearances. It's part of one of her most iconic lines from Story and Song, but she doesn't drop a single "babe" throughout the whole The Stolen Century! Go up and read those lines again — pre-Story and Song, there's not a single one!
I have a few conjectures here that might explain this. First, on a Doyalist level, one could attribute this to small sample size (Lup just doesn't have that much dialogue relative to her thematic presence), and/or to Griffin himself still feeling out her character in the first few episodes that she appeared in.
But on a Watsonian level: I'm purely speculating, but I wonder if it was a nickname she that first started using (or at least, using with regularity) for Barry at some point well into the establishment of their relationship, and from there, it bled out into platonic contexts too. Speaking of which, the fact that she predominantly uses it for Barry doesn't stop her from using it for Taako — in fact, though it only comes up once, it's in a very sincere moment of encouragement (as Taako struggles to transmute all of Phandalin into sapphire).
On that note, if there's anything I'll personally admit to wanting to see more of in fic, it's more of Lup using "babe" in platonic/familial contexts! It's hard to extrapolate from canon if this is a "just Taako" thing, an "any close platonic bond" thing, or an "anyone whatsoever" thing, but I just think it's so cute! (And I'd personally vibe check it as realistic for her to say to other IPRE crewmates, for example — but I'm possibly biased, as a Lup and Magnus friendship writer/enjoyer.)
Lastly on the topic of "babe," it comes up in a variety of contexts, but as alluded to above, it can be sincere or teasing — of which the teasing can, but doesn't necessarily, overlap with flirting.
Specifically, Lup uses "babe" twice while gently, lightheartedly questioning Barry's decisions or priorities, like his intent to blow himself up. It also comes up in teasing or flirtatious moments within emotionally charged moments, like the reunion, or when she gets her body back. It's just not exclusively used for deflating tension — see her sheer confidence in the "we're legends" line and how she revels in it, for example.
All in all, "babe" is clearly one of Lup's go-to all-purpose words, and I like that it shows her voice evolving over time, whether or not that was intentional by Griffin. "Babe" is by far the most worth analyzing of Lup's terms of endearment, but we'll also talk about:

With the obligatory caveat that we have an even smaller sample size here, it jumps out at me that Lup only ever uses "dear" in teasing contexts, reacting to mistakes both big and small. But it's also a word she uses to emphasize love and forgiveness — especially communicating that she won't breeze past a mistake like it didn't happen, but also isn't going to maintain hostility over it, which we see with Lucretia.
(You can even make an argument that Lup teasing Taako with a "dear" is at least a little tension-defusing too, because that scene happens in the leadup to Lup and Barry presenting the Relic plan. But it's less clear there if she's using it consciously with that purpose.)

Now, a few more odds and ends for the sake of completeness! The first thing I noticed is that she calls Barry "honey" while teasing him a little bit, as they compare their favorite cycles (though I don't think she's necessarily lying, either) — overall very similar to how she uses "babe" in playful contexts sometimes, or how she uses "dear" with Taako or Lucretia.
"Bud" is for Taako, Magnus, and Davenport! Like "babe," it seems to be a very multi-purpose vocative — ranging from questioning her friends' judgment, all the way to deeply sincere moments. (Taako seems to bring out the sincerity more than anyone, unsurprisingly.)
Lastly, "Man" is used both as a general filler word/emphasizing word without necessarily filling in for a name or subject, or alternatively, transforms into "my man" exactly once when talking to Davenport. That one's interesting to me because "my man" is something associated a lot more with Taako — and specifically, used by Taako with people he likes and trusts (link), though it may or may not actually be a serious context.
Merle (giving Taako some shitty kelp shoes): There’s a lot of give in kelp and if they’re too small, get ‘em wet and they’ll get bigger and these— These are for you.
Taako (pretending he won't immediately cast Levitate on them): Oh, well, thank you, my man. These are just beautiful!

To compare and contrast, Lup's only known "my man" is deployed against Davenport when she's kind of questioning his judgment, but he's obviously a person she likes. If you'll let me speculate, I wouldn't be shocked if Lup overheard Taako hit Davenport with plenty of "my man"-s over the course of the Stolen Century — just a guess, but it's something I'd really like to believe in, because the twins influencing each other's speaking styles is just so cute.
And that's all! This was an exercise I undertook to get better at writing Lup, but I always really intended to post it too, so I hope it was interesting and insightful — I knew it definitely left me with a new appreciation for how Lup's way of speaking evolves over time, in particular!

TAZ Spoilers Suffering game comic/arc
So - I heard rumors and have been analyzing the comicbook cover to myself alone in my room and I heard that it was only going to be around 272 pages which means they'll be cutting some stuff out - I am guessing because I've also seen some of the pages
I am guessing Taakitz date, Merle's kids, and Magnus's fish isn't cut out and will be like the first thing we read about - praise Pan
Where I am worried is what sacrifices won't make the cut
Obviously you could theorize seeing the lord of eversummer/neverwinter in the beginning might be cut from the pages or whatever or maybe even taako fangirling over edward and lydia or something along those lines - I canno say - I have no idea what they will determine to be significant or insignificant
And many have theorized this book will end on the redrobe reveal
Which would be sick as hell but also conflicting - but I can make another post for that.
No - what i am absolutely begging stays within the final cuts is Taako's biggest sacrifice.
His beauty.
I know in the podcast he disguises himself to look normal again and drawing the sacrifice could be considered worthless if it's just going to be covered up - but it is probably the biggest sacrifice Taako makes in the suffering game overall - yes he endures the most physical damage but sacrifical wise - it took Justin in game/in podcast so long for Taako to agree to it because like Taako he felt the confliction of how Taako - FROM TV - would go on without standing out physically.
If he was just going to look like everyone else then what is he going to do? What's the point?
I am head over heels so so so SO excited for this book to come out and see all the canon designs for edward and lydia, and young Lucretia - so whatever happens I have a feeling I'll be happy with it
But if I can get my opinion in or a say in before it's too late - that is just all I wanted to do.

obviously the death montage was great, like great use of space, but i also LOVED how they spliced the lunar interlude into flashbacks between loops...
and when they got the chalice??? with the memories and then meeting chalice!june??? that fucked so hard. that was really fuckin good
honestly overall i rly rly loved it. i mean /obviously/ but god it's so good huh. fuck. i do think some parts of the podcast hit harder (splicing ren's subplot into the banking thing was smart but i do prefer the magic lessons for diamonds bit... ren i was watching the whole time) but then some parts of the gn eleventh hour also really fucking own.

Because TAZ is a podcast with no visuals and no canonical look for anything, people were allowed to do whatever they wanted with the characters with a few specific exceptions, otherwise we were worried it might become impossible for people to follow the finished video.
Participants were given both a rough animatic to dictate screen direction, and a PDF that had written descriptions of what details absolutely had to be visible in the characters (Taako is an elf and he has a tall wizard hat mentioned in episode, the boys don't have bracers but Brian and Killian do, etc.), descriptions of the settings as given in-episode, the video specs required to be able to put the whole thing together in the end, a heavily edited version of @tazscripts transcript of the episode, and a few other details deemed important at the time. Participants were also given the email addresses of the people whos claimed parts came before and after their own in hopes that people would collaborate to make sure their shots connected well.
The written descriptions in the PDF were decorated with lovely illustrations like these to hopefully simplify the information people had to take in

You'll notice there are two versions of each the animatic and PDF, as linked below. Originally, the episode was only going to cover the second half post-commercial until the call for animators was reshared by Clint on Twitter at the last minute and enough people signed up that it felt appropriate to do the first part as well, and we are forever grateful because the episode is so much better for it! The Disney Channel-parody for the commercial was also completely Andobiki's idea, it was so exciting that I went digging through later episodes for clean "Davenport" clips specially for that.

being in a qpr myself, i’m going to ENFORCE our dynamic/experiences onto taagnus (not all of them are personal experiences but they’re mostly derived from ones ive had :])
they get into long, heated arguments about dumb shit like wether ‘ancient’ is pronounced “aink-shent” or “ain-shent”
Taako doesn’t like to be touched by most people, but he’s REALLY clingy with Magnus. If it’s an option, he’s leaning on him/holding onto him etc
Magnus doesn’t like sleeping with other people in the same bed because he’s “a fighter by day AND by night” and rolls around a lot. Taako doesn’t care and enjoys sleeping completely on top of him.

Magnus insists on helping cook and Taako always tasks him with anything BUT cooking, for example carving everyone spoons/bowls.. chopping veggies, watching the water boil so it doesnt overflow (it wont) (he wants to keep magnus occupied) (it always works)

These days I'm writing fic for Our Flag Means Death.
Longfic
I have three finished long pieces, in order of connectedness to canon:
Hungry for love, ready to drown (T, 33K) - a Stede POV retelling of season one starting with episode four, lots of missing scenes (so much with clothing but also wound care! dream sequence!). My love letter to canon; I watched those episodes so many times in little bursts to really absorb the writing and acting, and I'm very proud of the results. Goes well with S2 prep, if I may say so. Will probably definitely most likely get a sequel, but it's taking me a while to figure out how to approach it.
the devil's threeway (E, 30K) - Ed POV, starts with a pre-canon encounter with Jack and (non-canonical) Anne Bonney, follows up with a post-S1 meet-up with Anne and (also non-canonical) Mark Read, and then a somewhat unusual reunion with Stede. Includes the fic where Ed would not. Stop. Crying. There is a reasonably likelihood that I will write something similar or equivalent with the canon versions of Anne and Mary, but it's still marinating.
for the benefit of all the broken hearts (E, 62K) - the not RPF but not not RPF that is maybe the best thing I've ever written in any medium for any reason: a fix-it fic for the gorgeous and weird Water Flowing Underground, told from the perspective of the unnamed second wife. My exploration of the aftermath of tragedy, the possibility of repair, and varieties of love. Read the tags, read the author's note, read WFU first (or don't, I'm not the boss of you, and I do know someone who read them out of order and still enjoyed it), but please give it a shot. Posts tagged #carlita coded content are related to this work, sometimes very obliquely. There is also a follow-up fic of missing scenes, end up several worlds away, that still has one chapter remaining (I SWEAR I'm going to finish it), and a short sort of non-linear AU, back on my beat, that explores some alternate endings.

What are your thoughts on the comparisons some people make between Hunt//low and Caleb and Evelyn / Wittewife? Personally, I have them to be annoying.
OHOHOH BUDDY DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED.
at the risk of sounding too aggressive about it, it genuinely beyond infuriates me. We don’t know much about Evelyn other than it being clearly hinted at without a shadow of a doubt that she was a Clawthorne, so from knowing that and knowing the similarities in her silhouette and name to Eda’s it can only be assumed it’s a narrative choice to illustrate she is the most like the Wittewife/the Wittewife is most like her. That being said, Willow is the further thing away from having that Clawthorne fire I’ve ever seen. She’s chaotic and fiery, yeah, but not like Eda and by extension assumably Evelyn. The most we know about Evelyn is that she “tempted” Caleb into coming to the demon realm and that they ended up falling in love and (presumably) having a baby. Willow wasn’t even close to the reason for Hunter leaving his abusive home life. Sure, she was one of his first few “sorta” friends after ASIAS, but the one thing that convinced him to leave was knowing Belos would kill him if he came back. Even Flapjack wasn’t the one to convince him. The one person that would be closest to the Wittewife in personality and support (or attempted support) in leaving the coven other than Eda is Luz, his adoptive sister. She has the Clawthorne chaos and fire and is always there to support Hunter when we’ve barely seen Hunter and Willow interact on screen in the past few eps other than her supporting him physically when he couldn’t stand because of his sigil and cutting his hair for him completely platonically. And we clearly know that Luz and Hunter obviously isn’t being implied because that’s gross. And clearly Willow has not been interested in a romance with him whatsoever in canon so. There is literally not a single fucking similarity between the two.
And further, it feels like the same people going crazy and getting super excited about the haircut to distance himself from Caleb & the ones getting upset that his eyes are brown so he looks more like Caleb are then talking about Willow/Evelyn hypothetical parallels for ✨romance✨. Like, I need you guys to pick a side. Do you want a Hunter who has so far divorced himself from his ortet so he can find himself or do you want Hunter constantly paralleling Caleb because you think the idea would be cute of a noncanon love interest also paralleling the Wittewife.

"A kickass, dimension-hopping elf wizard and the twin sister of Taako (you know, from TV?). Technically a lich (which, in TAZ:B canon, is an incorporeal undead made wholly of magic, so that's pretty ghost-adjacent). Helped save the universe from total assimilation by the Hunger. Spent years trapped inside her own umbrella. Is canonically a trans woman."

Lup (pronounced ""loop"") is a lich, which, while not being a ghost specifically, is still a type of undead being. However, Lup's brand of lich is that she's tied to this mortal plane and kept from dissipating not by a phylactery with souls, but by an emotional tether- in this case, that emotion would be love.
She's died, been ghostified, and been revived repeatedly due to what was basically a time loop. Once she and her found family were able to break the time loop (or temporarily stave it off), she then got poisoned and accidentally spent around a decade stuck in an umbrella that swallows the essence of defeated magical users (which she counted as). She, a lich powered by love, spent a decade in an umbrella, unable to contact anyone in the outside world or do anything but struggle to EXIST. It would have been so easy to give up, to let go and just stop, but instead, what does Lup do? She saves up her strength, over days and months and YEARS, to be able to control the umbrella instead. She does this several times: to influence the umbrella's reaction to others and get it to her brother (repeatedly); to protect him once it was by his side; to protect the umbrella from the Grim Reaper that was probably going to kill her since liches are illegal; to send a message to him, scorching her name into a wall in an attempt to tell him that she was still alive; and to channel the occasional spell, including the one that led to her brother realizing that she was in the umbrella and snapping it to free her. Asides from being an actual ghost, she is a ghost in the narrative too, haunting the entire story via absence ever since the early episodes, where the protagonists picked up her umbrella, so she's a ghost many times over at this point. Learning of her existence almost completely changes how you view the first few episodes. But that's just a bit of a fun fact; let's get back to why Lup is amazing.
She's VERY COOL. Her specialty is Evocation magic, and what she is MOST known for is fire spells. When she was broken out of the umbrella (it was snapped), her first action is to release a wave of fire that destroys every last bit of The Hunger (antagonistic force that swallows up worlds) in the room while leaving her allies untouched. Her second? To turn to her brother and ask gleefully, ""You're dating the Grim Reaper?!"" ICONIC. (Also she made the Phoenix Fire Gauntlet that has the potential to destroy entire towns or something.) In addition, she has other talents besides just magic and iconic lines. For example: Cooking! She and her twin brother Taako acted as chefs and arcanists for a ship powered by bonds and called the Starblaster.
While dabbling in transmutation (the school that her twin brother eventually chose), she made a fifteen dollar bill that duplicates itself (the duplicates don't create duplicates), but Greg Grimaldis stole it from her. So, what did she do? At the plane's most-watched press conference, she went up on stage and vowed, for the whole world's watching eyes to see, that she would be getting it back (and then dropped the mic). This is called back to repeatedly during said time loop (""I believe that, one of these times, we’re gonna get it right. And we’re gonna find a way to defeat The Hunger and... save everybody inside of it. I have to believe that, to keep doing what we do. Because I have to believe [choking up] that I’m gonna get...those fifteen dollars back from Greg fucking Grimaldis!""). And guess what? ~20 or so years later after the hundred-year time loop, she, her brother, and the other two player characters hold a heist on Greg Grimaldis's casino to get it back.
Also, she can play the violin, which was part of a scene that led to this beautiful narration that I'm only going to quote part of: ""Our capacity for love increases with each person we cross paths with throughout our lives, and with each moment we spend with those people. But too often we neglect that part of ourselves in favor of others. And by the time we realize just how important it is, we find ourselves with fewer folks around to practice with. But the seven of you have something that nobody else ever had: time. All the time in the world. Time enough to grow indescribably close. Time enough to learn how to care for each other, how to allow yourselves to be cared for. And in the case of Barry and Lup, time enough to fall deeply and truly in love."" She and Barry (also arcanist) spend several decades pining. Her first canon words to him are ""Nerd alert"". They became liches together in the same ceremony. They're part of each other's emotional tethers. Barry ghostified to avoid magical memory-wiping and made his sole goal for a decade plus just to find her and when Barry thought she was permadead he almost completely lost control of his lich form.
Other fun fact: One loop, the Starblaster team was being judged for sins the justices perceived them to have committed. When it was her turn, Lup correctly listed off each sin the justices were going to accuse her of, before they said anything other than her name. Boss move right there.
TL;DR: Lup is a ghost several times over, she's a girlboss, she's amazing."

what do you think channah/boomer/purpled's childhhoods were like (sorry I forgot the name of their trio)
i think i'm actually in a small minority where i think cpurp actually had a pretty normal childhood. his parents were somewhat distant and hands-off, but that was normal for his planet, as was him leaving the house at around 12-ish. He'd been visiting hypixel since he was pretty young, so it was a no-brainer for him to move there when he became independent! he stayed in hypixel housing for about a year or so while he rose through the bedwars ranks before eventually being invited to the tiredsmp. i really don't think his life was ever overly remarkable, with the exception of him undertaking the job of a mercenary, but even then, that's not Known to most people. which leads into his fixation of a legacy, because even before the dsmp, he was covert. hidden. unknown to most and only remembered when others needed him for their own personal goals.
hannah and boomer are a bit harder, because since i see them as twins and cboomer is canonically like, centuries old, i rarely think of them as children, because you have to go REALLY far back to reach that point. kind of the same deal justin had with taako in taz. i think they probably had a more nomadic lifestyle, never quite staying in one place. them having traveled a lot is why hannah says she'd dealt with things like the egg before (iirc), bc their family would help out folks needing magical assistance with bigger issues, like the egg or things akin to it.

I also kinda feel bad for people who skipped the live shows trying to watch Imbalance because like,,,, most of it stays just fine and understandable but then there's little things like mention of Taako's cats being a Canon Thing and not just headcanon, or the name of Davenport's ship, or WrestleMania, or "who the fuck is Jeff Angel" that won't make sense without that context. And none of it is necessarily NEEDED to understand what's going on but like the first time my sister watched through it she skipped the live shows and messaged me like "am I missing something??" And I had to be like oh shit let's get you caught up on the live shows so this stuff makes any sense at all lmao,,,, plus the live shows are very funny anyways in my opinion so I would recommend watching them anyways but I know some people prefer to skip those which might make Imbalance feel just a little bit off lmao
