me finishing the new graphic novel like on the one hand yes the art is gorgeous as always yes the chalice scenes were handled well yes the lunar interludes got included in a cool way but on the other hand me looking at ren (and also a bit at taako by proxy) like
#taz gn spoilers#taz negative#kind of??? more like taz mixed bag#taz gn negative in contrast to taz original podcast positive#i just feel like in combining ren's role in the story with redmond's her connection to taako was undermined significantly#and i worry that taako's ending as it is in canon is going to ring hollow with her characterization being so radically changed#also it seems to me like taako has been... flattened a bit? and all the missing moments with ren go a long way to highlight that#like in the podcast he has moments of absolute assholery and lots of goofs at other people's expense and eleventh hour has plenty of that#but he also has moments of shining kindness and deep sadness that stand out all the more in contrast and add depth to his character#and what this installment of the graphic novels has done is cut down taako's dick moments but also all his most heartfelt ones#like... where was taako being affected by the fact that ren loves his show when he can only remember that it ended in tragedy?#where was taako realizing that ren died in the bank heist and trying to save her even though he knew the loop would reset anyway?#and where the fuck was ''i've been watching the whole time'' ???#like to be frank this has kind of shaken my confidence re: how the adaptation of the last three arcs will resolve#bc if this much emotional ground is being conceded to narrative utility i worry that the ending won't have any left to stand on

the fun thing about taako is he has very little in the ways of canon physical appearance other than "in-universe, he is seen as extremely beautiful" so you can give him whatever features you want and implicitly celebrate those features as beautiful

I expected Zoro to be sillier. I must say that the jokes he makes are good and I did laugh at those but when he got serious he probably got TOO serious and he was giving post-ts instead of pre-ts (if that makes any sense)???? Idk. Both Zoro and Nami deserved to be sillier.

Ough I need to avoid my TAZ shelf when I'm tired, because reminding myself that The Adventure Zine and the graphic novels are right next to each other and how painful some of the differences between them are legitimately gives me a migraine. That and my eyes are weird so looking at comics for too long just does that anyways but I digress
#gods it hurts. like i can see the dates these are all printed and i can see the dates the original episodes were posted#and it's like. maybe it was accidental and maybe the vision for his character just happened to change naturally around that time. but.#it feels so painfully obvious when the changes to how Jocasta specifically is drawn were made and why (for part of it at least)#no idea where some of the really fucked up 'unintentional' implications came from but it's obvious SOMETHING changed#cuz man. like maybe it's JUST ME but it really just feels idk. icky. gross. makes my skin crawl.#maybe it's just cause these are close to tropes that I've had to become extremely aware of in other media cuz of how it depicts ppl like me#but like. i can't look at the two next to each other without feeling like legitimately icked out even though it's just a comic#idk. just don't really have anyone i can vent to that seems to take my feelings seriously because it's 'just a drawing you're overreacting'#other than my girlfriend who has very kindly listened to me get some of those frustrations out but at this point she's heard it all already#so there's like. nobody i trust to actually listen to why it makes me feel bad without judging me for being 'too negative' about a dumb GN#vent#tw taz gn#tag gn trigger warning

genuinely obsessed with justin playing taako as a ranger during imbalance thats so legitimately funny but,,, DEEPLY interesting to me,,, taakos relationship with magic and casting is so deep and complex and i know this was Justin just having a laugh BUT TO ME. it really showed how that complexity manifests sometimes

Listen we all got out issues with the graphic novel and the character designs for such but can I just say 11th hour did not hold back on committing to a character design.
You’ve got:
Ren, who is a fat character and literally it is not commented on or anything she’s just the best and she’s trying to help her town.
And then just the doubling down on all dwarves have facial hair? The visible facial hair on Hécuba (and a little on Mavis) felt so like interesting bcuz like that’s just a trait of their race, it means nothing to them. But to see it represented, not shied away from? Idk yeah there’s still valid criticism that can be said about a lot of the character designs but I’m a huge fan of some of the minor characters and the representation that these characters are giving us

Not about the bc fandom in specific but I'm so tired of second or third-hand rumors being spread like bubblegum in a classroom
Especially when people don't even clarify that there is zero proof of it...and they just "heard it from someone that heard it from someone else that..." or this whole "yeah the friend of a friend made out/dated/hooked up with xy" like?? Okay then...
#obviously it happens in the bc fandom as well especially with/about Joel i think#but also like...joonas? probably niko as well but rn I can't remember anything#also heard a bunch of rumors about Santa Cruz/Ex Santa Cruz members (especially Taz (and ehh Archie obviously))#just waiting for rumors about Samy and Co at this point :)#and obviously they are mainly negative and putting them in a bad light#of course it's possible that some of it is true but unless you're sure about it just don't spread it around as possibly false information..#(or idk mark it as such but even then it sucks because another person talks about having read that somewhere without the information that#it's just a rumor and then other people read that and think it might be true or whatever?#*)#anyway I'm tired of it and I hate reading it not because I'm scared that the people I like might not be 'perfect' but because I dislike#rumors like that a lot especially when they are mostly bullshit spread by people that don't have anything else to do or want attention#fine rants

ethersea s1 ending feels so sudden bc it was kinda like they established some story but didn't give it the time to fully be fleshed out? like benefactor orlean n the drinarr had been there all along but they weren't in the big picture enough after their arcs to feel like suitable threats and even the prophecy with amber and the blink sharks was only brought out up last arc
i think the characters have a lot more potential growth but it just doesn't feel quite like the climatic finales taz usually gives us
#alli says shit#it's kinda unsatisfying#and not to constantly compare naddpod to taz but. even if eldermourne's ending was a lil rushed it felt satisfying still#one bc it felt like the PCs got something they'd wanted from the start even if their stories weren't completely finished#two bc the quest for ireena had been the point for most of their story so it felt right to end with that#n i get ethersea is more open world but then the story being more character driven n ending when it feels right for more of the coriolis#seems like a better choice#hopefully when they come back it'll be a more character driven story rather than feeling like they just get into situations#tbh i feel like i've been really negative abt ethersea and i have been trying to like. talk abt it in a way that doesn't feel rude?#anyone who knows me n legends knows that i feel very strongly abt seemingly wasted potential in stories#and that's the thing! ethersea has all this potential but it feels like it's not being used to its full potential#nothing makes me more upset than the possibility for greatness that misses the mark just enough

(spoilers for finale of TAZ: Graduation)
I’m meh on this ending honestly.... I just don’t like the break up of the found family ever, and I don’t think that they would have all gone separate ways. The Gary thing is nice and fits kind of?? It just. Does not line up with everything established about, I repeat, the central found family. ANd I am not the biggest fan of ‘it’s nice to have a name’ thing because it just doesn’t line up with per-established stuff. That goes for the others too (less so Fitzroy, but still).
And, like, didn’t they dismantle the capitalist economic system???
I will be politely ignoring the post-script for the most part.
On a broader note, I never like stories that try to wrap up the whole future of the characters rather than wrapping up the story and then leaving the future open.
That said, I love that ending scene with the three of them. And I obviously have LOVED listening to the series as a whole.
