This isn't really a question, but damn- you know you're getting popular when your ocs- which are unrelated to any fandom- is getting both fan art and an entire fanfiction dedicated to them.

I know, and I feel exceedingly lucky to be surrounded by such creative people. I love my characters dearly of course, but the fact that they're resonating this strongly with others as well is staggering. I can't thank you enough.

(edit: Maybe I should mention that if anyone ever feels inspired to write something about my dog boys, I'd consider it an honor. You can ask for my permission or advice if you're unsure but it's not mandatory. Just try to treat them nicely if you can? You don't have to adhere to their established canon, but don't publish anything you wouldn't want me to see. And send me a link please, I'd love to take a look).

i don't dislike the concept of AUs itself, I'm just not a fan of like... the subculture that spawned around them in the UT fandom specifically and how it eventually took over almost all canon content (especially when it limits itself to the bros)

i like aus visually! i am an artist at heart after all. it's just that, if I'm going to care about them as stories and not just fun design ideas, my bar is uhh almost impossibly high the further you move from canon lolol.

#uf being one of those! the story is centered on certain characters (mainly asgore) behaving very ooc #so as a stickler for canon I don't have much interest in it #but there is a very clear visual idea and motif in the redesigns that ties every character together very efficiently #and also fucks like a rabid rhino #so i can appreciate its visual/aesthetic aspects instead #i mean you can't understate the impact that good *artists* specifically had on the proliferation of aus back in the day #good writing is almost inseverable from good characterization because dialogues and characterization ARE an integral part #of what makes writing good. while good art (as much as it too is tied to its own conventions) is free-er from the bounds of accuracy #as was as being easier & faster to consume. writing has to be read first. you can just look at a piece of art and go ''wow that looks sick''#without thinking about logical details/accuracy #you can show a pic of sans to an artist who's never touched the game and they might draw you the most gorgeous piece of art you've ever seen #it's significantly harder to do for writing #swap aus are a fun design challenge to see how you'd incorporate different aspects of some characters visual signatures into another #it's a game of translation of sorts. but if you want to treat it like a story well... the matter becomes a lot more complicated #answered asks #au tag

Sir Arthur originated from ancient Shiver Star and used to be quite infamous for his cruelty. He has changed his ways since and made sure to make up for his past mistakes, yet the idea of someone potentially knowing of his crimes is not something he takes lightly.

On the bright side of things this also means that he won't be hostile towards Fylass for their own past sins.

Is there a limit on reposting in a time frame? Idk if "repost spam" is a thing that affects blogs. I'm very unfamiliar with Tumblr works

Ok so! Tumblr does have a post limit, I’ve never hit it but from what I understand: you can only make 250 posts every 24 hours. This includes both posts you reblog and original posts you make. I’m not sure if that’s 250 posts per blog or if posts you make/reblog on a sideblog count towards that limit. I’m also not sure if you can still queue posts or save them to your drafts if you’ve hit the post limit.

As far as I can tell, there’s no other effects it has on your blog, it shouldn’t boost or hide you in an algorithm or anything. While tumblr technically has an algorithm (setting your dashboard to “best stuff first”), most people opt out of it and set their dashboard to reverse chronological order. Even in the algorithm tumblr does have, I’m not sure posting a ton has any effect on it.

Is there a story you despise but whose worldbuilding you like?

Bro so many. I could never list all of them if I tried. Part of what fascinates me about bad books is seeing the lost potential and reverse engineering better stories in my own imagination.

Short list:

I love everything about the dragons of A Song of Ice and Fire. Don’t actually despise the series, a lot of it is very good, it’s just not my cup of tea. But the dragons, man. Nuclear bombs that are your pets. Special but subtle magic bonds. No matter how close those bonds are, no one can ever fully control them. They never stop growing. The implication that they aren’t naturally occurring animals and were in fact created artificially via lost magic. The weird fucked up cultural practices that developed believing it would keep them connected to dragons. The implication that that magic wiped out the empire that created them because they were never satisfied with their already unmatched power.

Bad YA book called Shiver about werewolves whose transformations were tired to temperature as opposed to the moon or their emotions. Shame the book around that interesting concept sucks ass.

The lore of Genshin Impact is super interesting. There used to be tones of gods but most died off in a war with each other. The surviving gods each have a country that they exercise varying degrees of control over, some ruling directly, some indirectly, some just kind of being around. Each country’s culture is shaped by its god’s values and personal hang ups. The gods nuked one atheist country into oblivion. The gods let a handful of designated cool people have elemental powers if they want them bad enough. My personal headcanon is that it’s only socially acceptable to dress differently from the norm when you are a designated cool person, explaining the incredibly drag copy-pasted npcs. Used to play the game but realized I wasn’t having fun, i was doing busywork so i could earn gambling points, so I stopped.

Stephenie Meyer’s The Host is about a race of body-snatching aliens who travel the universe “peacefully” conquering planets and “improving” the cultures of their hosts. One host ends up not being fully dead when a new alien is inserted and so the alien learns that taking people’s free will is bad. Genuinely fantastic sci-fi premise that could have opened the doors for a critique of colonialism and assimilation, or just a fun romp, but because it’s from the author of Twilight all the attention goes towards a love triangle/trapezoid that’s also deeply uncomfortable.

i remember it used to be a bit of a fandom pet peeve of mine that some people would forget that the gung ho guns and eye of michael were two separate groups with some membership overlap but then stampede came along and made the eom into a project of conrad’s backed by knives. another example of how the reboot feels like bad fanfiction.

#the eom worked best as a predominantly shadowy unknown group most closely tied to wolfwood and LR’s stories #i LIKED that we didn’t know who ran it or what their broader goals were outside of what contact they had with knives/the ghg #extradiagetically nightow just didn’t need to explore the eom in detail. they served their narrative purpose.#but i also find stories that try too hard to ask you bonus questions with overexplained answers to be very lame #so while prestampede it was kinda annoying but ultimately excusable to see ghg/eom used interchangeably #the new show cemented it them as interlinked in a way that actually made the story structure much weaker in an attempt to get ahead of you #this is all very much a critique of mine from the perspective of a writer not just a viewer btw #bad writing isn’t always enough to kill something yk. but plot holes are harder to excuse when your themes and structure are lacking #the manga’s Foundations were just much stronger than the reboot’s if you will #you can turn your brain off with this show and just watch the pretty colors if you want. absolutely no shame in that. we need that stuff #i guess i just struggle to accept a no brainer show like this as being another core leg of the story in the way trimax/98 are bc of it #pretentious of me i know.#stampede critical #for my followers that filter it

Ohh the scent thing is such a fascinating facet of your story! When Machete does his violent work, can Vasco smell it on him? Does Vasco's scent linger on him after they spend a night together? Can passerby smell sex or arousal? What kinds of smells do Machete's co-workers give off? That would make the forbidden things very difficult to hide.

Does any of their peers suspect them at any point?

I think Machete is too much of a neat freak to let any unpleasant odors stick to him for too long. Even though I have this habit of drawing him sprayed with blood and such, in reality it's fairly uncommon for him to get his hands properly dirty, even towards the end, at his worst. He has employees specifically for that business. I think the only affair that is exceedingly hard to avoid or scrub off would be executions by burning, which he has to supervise on occasion. Smoke is just one of those things that spreads far and wide and permeates everything. The persisting aroma of charred flesh and burnt dog hair makes him nauseous for days.

If there's enough close contact it's only reasonable that their personal smells would start to blend together. I can see this being a significant bonding thing under most circumstances. Machete always gets a little blue whenever he has his sheets changed after Vasco has gone back to Florence.

Depending on the situation recent sex might be noticeable, arousal would probably be only detectable on very close proximity. This kind of stuff starts to cross to pheromone territory and that's just a little too nebulous and instinctual for me to unpack in a logical and meaningful way, I think.

His co-workers smell of various things just like everyone else. If there's something seriously wrong with their health you might be able to tell, or not. You might be able to guess where they live, what they do for living and what kind of pastimes they enjoy if they smell familiar in a certain way. Some people are easier to read and some don't give you much of anything to work with.

But we're talking about very subtle things, I'd imagine in order to notice any of the above you'd have to stand at least withing a touching distance to a person, preferably be somewhat familiar with their usual scent profile and have the intent and awareness to decipher what you're sensing. It's not something you can catch from the other side of the room or a thing that dictates social interactions to an overwhelmingly great degree. So if you manage to maintain a sufficient distance to anyone who might suspect something, you're probably fine. Regular bathing helps, and using perfumes and other additional scents to divert people's attention away is very common.

hi pia how are you? im not a native english speaker and wanted to ask you, when you wrote that caleb is negging faber its not like flirting but manipulation? 😅 i tried looking up the definition. im rereading utr (my fav spin-off i am eagerly waiting for) and would an example of negging be when caleb comments on faber looking like an omega? i thought it was more him talking out loud tbh. or is it when he says about fabers sex toy, one that he didnt give up on? 😂 i really like him haha

Yes! Your example is spot on - re: commenting on Faber looking like an omega. I'll give you (and others) some more examples, because I think it's definitely worth talking about in general!

I really like Caleb, but he doesn't always speak to Faber very encouragingly in Underline the Red, and some examples are here. He often gives back-handed compliments - things that make Faber feel 'lesser' while making it seem like a compliment at the same time.

It would be like if a guy said something like 'wow that's such a weird laugh, it's so brave of you to laugh like that in public.' It's not really a compliment.

While Caleb doesn't go that far, exactly, he definitely says some things that put Faber in an insecure headspace and keep him there:

‘You taste great,’ Caleb said. ‘But fine, shower then. You’re a prissy little thing, aren’t you?’ Faber had heard far worse his whole life. ‘Yes, I am.’

This happens early on, and Faber takes it as an insult that 'slides off him' (i.e. had heard far worse means he doesn't think it's great, but it's also not going to turn him off). Prissy is not a good thing to be called in general! It's a term for someone who is uptight, and annoyingly fussy - and usually effeminate in nature).

‘It’s pretty. That blond red, I like it. Pretty like all of you. It’s so easy to imagine you’re an omega.’ Faber didn’t tense, but the words slid through him uneasily. Was that what Caleb was doing? He couldn’t find an omega, so he settled for a slighter, leaner beta?

This - Caleb has no reason to bring up omegas as often as he does, and Faber already knows that alphas prefer omegas (and Caleb makes it clear that he prefers omegas). So he's already making it seem like in order to get through sleeping with Faber, he's going to pretend he is one -> This makes it sound like he's not really wanting to accept Faber for who he is.

He could say anything: 'I'm so excited to sleep with a beta' or 'it's my first time, you'll have to help me' or 'You're so pretty' but he adds on a little sting right at the end - it's so easy to imagine you're something you're not.

This kind of 'negging' implies that Faber isn't good enough as he is, while also praising him for being close to it.

And from Faber's reaction, we see he doesn't like it, and it makes him very insecure.

‘Your ass gives a whole new meaning to the word tight,’ Caleb said, sounding a little impatient. ‘It really is much easier with omegas.’ It was a criticism that Faber wasn’t prepared to handle...

Complaining/being impatient on this, and comparing Faber to omegas in an unfavourable way, while also using the compliment of 'tight' is another example of a back-handed compliment. It's not being 'tight' that Faber notices here, it's being told that sex for Caleb is easier with omegas.

There's a couple of other examples - Caleb complaining that it's going to take 'so long' to work open Faber (in comparison to omegas) etc. so the constant 'I'm comparing you to omegas and you're not always measuring up' is happening in the background.

Now don't get me wrong, Caleb also just straight up praises him! He calls him perfect, he actually says a lot of very complimentary stuff. But it's a lot harder to take those comments at face value, when some of his comments have been quite back-handed, or been the kind of compliments that aren't really just straightforward compliments.

This is combined with the fact that Faber wants to be an omega, and feels very insecure about not being one, so all those veiled kind of 'this is harder for me because you're not an omega' compliments hit Faber really hard. He's just pretty good at masking it!

I also think Caleb does some of this on purpose. I think while he's very nurturing with omegas, Faber's not an omega as far as he's concerned, he doesn't have to be as nice and attentive as he normally would for a one night stand.

Caleb and Faber have great chemistry, but they also have some stuff to work out between them. Caleb starts from a position of valuing Faber less because he's a beta, and Faber starts from a position of not valuing himself much, and so taking all of that very much to heart.

We'll see more of how this plays out in future chapters! But for all that their chemistry in the bedroom is really magical (like they are definitely a hot couple!), their relationship as it starts to unfold definitely has some areas that need communication.

They're one of my favourite pairings and the reason I've actually stopped posting chapters is so that when their story is ready (because it properly picks up after Underline the Black), I won't have to put it in hiatus during a really angsty part!! And I can write it more steadily :D

Hey there! Thanks so much for liking my work. Please don't apologize for not commenting either! While I love comments and they fuel me to write/draw more, I never expect them. So it's always an extra special gift when I do get them!

Regarding Echo's wings in Take Flight: It's difficult to say, because his specific situation on Skako Minor depends on multiple canon events, and there's a good chance those events would have happened very differently in this AU, if they happened at all. (for example, an explosion like the one that they thought killed Echo certainly wouldn't normally kill a Shriek Hawk)

So, idk? Assuming things happened exactly as in canon, I guess he might have some cybernetic wing tips, but it would be very difficult to remove his wings entirely while Echo's still alive, since their species specifically evolved to make things difficult for hunters to cut off their wings.

But yeah, sorry, it's late enough in TCW that idk if it'd happen at all in this AU, though who knows! If I do ever get to it, you'll see it in the fic!
