A Mother's Love, So Pure and True

A mother's love, forever enduring, A bond that's unbreakable, so reassuring, A love that's unconditional and pure, A treasure that's priceless, so secure.

From the moment I entered this world, Her love wrapped around me, tightly furled, Her gentle touch, her soothing voice, Her unwavering support, my constant choice.

She held my hand as I took my first steps, Cheered me on with every challenge met, She wiped away tears, kissed away pain, Her love an unwavering, eternal refrain.

She taught me lessons, both big and small, Guided me with wisdom, through it all, Her patience, grace, and endless care, A love that's beyond compare.

Her heart, a reservoir of boundless love, Her embrace, a shelter from storms above, Her presence, a beacon of unwavering light, A love that shines through day and night.

Her sacrifices, countless and unseen, Her love, a constant, evergreen, Her warmth, her selflessness, her grace, A love that time cannot erase.

A mother's love, a precious treasure, A bond that fills my heart with pleasure, For all she is and all she's done, I'm forever grateful, her cherished one.

A Tribute To My Mother

For nine long months you carried me

your heartbeat was my own

and when the doctor cut that cord

you were ready to take me home

so many times you stayed awake

as you rocked me through the night

you held me close and sang to me

and whispered “everything’s alright”

you changed my diapers and wiped my nose

before I could even walk

you tickled my belly and pinched my toes

and showed me how to talk

you picked me up every time I fell

and you chased away my fears

you fixed me up when I hurt myself

and you kissed away my tears

you cried the first day that I went to school

because you knew that I had to grow up

you smiled for me when I tried out for football

and at my games you would always show up

you blamed yourself when I started falling behind

and you tried so hard to keep me ahead

you did all you could to get me on track

but I only fell farther back instead

the more you tried to help me succeed

the more I pushed you away

and before I was old enough to leave

you couldn’t beg me to stay

you cried the first time the cops woke you up

your son being taken away

and when I called home that night from juvie hall

you knew just the right words to say

you blame yourself for my mistakes

and you wish you could help me change

you try so hard to find the problem

but you’re not the one to blame

you’ve been there through all the good times

and you always help me shoulder the bad

you never gave up or turned your back on me

and your love never let you stay mad

you’ve always been a hero to me

you’ve saved me over and over again

you will always mean the world to me

my mother, my mentor, my friend

one day you’ll grow old and you’ll need someone

to stay by your side and take care of you

and I’ll be right there like you’ve always been

to help you make it through

for nine long months you carried me

your heartbeat was my own

and to this day that heartbeat

is still the strongest love I’ve ever known.

for my mother

at 7 the brown suede pullout couch that consumed two corners of my room that come to think of it even 7 year old me thought was ugly was where i first saw you cry. perched on the edge of the couch your wet tears invisible to me through pieces of your thinning hair curtains your round face punctuated with unnaturally arched brows and cheekbones to match.

i always loved your brows. the long dreamy shimmering baby blue path from your uneven eyelids to your brows now drenched from the first grown-up tears i’ve witnessed on the brown suede pullout couch that consumes two corners of my room that was the first day i met you. the smoke from your cigarette settles into stillness but you kept the list of regrets in your next pack that you’d never smoke.

your tears extend their arms towards me and the smoke whispers behind my ear as we sat:

me, brother, and dad watching you unravel. i’m sorry.

at 18 i snatched your love traded it for a pack

or independence

or whatever

hid it deep in my duffel and left you for fucking oregon where the trees kiss the fog and the moss sing for the weeping clouds. where i kissed one too many california fuck-ups

transplanted in portland: “he just couldn’t do LA.” at 18 on the honey brown leather couch wrapped in the blanket you knitted me that consumed just one corner of my room.

perched on the edge of my sofa my tears invisible to no one through pieces of my thick hair

curtains my round face punctuated with slightly arched brows now drenched from the first grown-up tears no one had witnessed. longing for smokey i love you’s to fill my tear soaked lungs.

now we sit on a new brown sofa no longer suede, it’s canvas, from the brooklyn ikea next to dusty dressers that have to suck in to keeps its doors shut for storing your yarns whose fibers tickle my nostrils and ears that may or may not be used within the year.

we live closer to the park than the river where you spend your days weaving us back together

a scarf that spells i love you.
