I'm not even close to the first to scoop this. Monorail Music and Bandcamp have been touting the music of Emohoy Tsege Mariam Gebru's music for a while now.

Souvenirs is a home-recording of Gebru's haunting piano and voice. These songs were captured between 1977 and 1985. The Ethiopian (Addis Ababa) nun was forced to flee to Jerusalem due to ongoing wars in her home country. She passed away recently, and Mississippi Records has been doing yeoman's work getting her music released and available to the world.

To me, this immediately recalls the work of both Molly Drake and The Undertaker.

After hearing ‘Poor Boy’ from her son’s album Bryter Layter, Molly even penned a song in response entitled ‘Poor Mum’, which sees her address the themes carved out by Nick. In a later Guardian article, Gabrielle revealed: “I don’t think Nick even knew she wrote that song. But, yes, she’s saying: ‘You’ve got those emotions. Well, I got ’em too actually. We’re not just sitting here in the background.'”  

Molly was devastated when her only son passed away, whom she had passionately encouraged to pursue his dreams. She was one of Nick’s biggest supporters, and her hopeful nature is best reflected in her song ‘Dream Your Dreams’. She sings: “Dream your dreams if it’s the last thing you do/ Never mind if they don’t ever come true/ Something grows from them at sight and gleaming/ The seed of magic lies in all our dreaming.”

Watching the first episode of Ashes to Ashes for the first time in a decade and surprised to find myself sobbing uncontrollably when Alex kisses Molly goodbye and says she'll be back for her birthday cake. It's partly knowing that they will never see each other again and partly that I've become a parent myself since this first aired, but it hits a lot harder than I expected.

Minhwi Lee (Seoul, South Korea) must be a perfectionist. It took nearly 6 years for her to produce her first album "Borrowed Tongue" and now another 7 years have passed leading up to her new LP "Hometown to Come".

I don't know what to say - this is absolutely beautiful music. Her style is reminiscent of Weyes Blood. Pitchfork (where I learned about this release) mentioned Françoise Hardy. Finally, listen to the final track, "Hometown to Come" and tell me this doesn't recall Molly Drake. So good.

This is currently a CD only release on Mirroball (South Korea). But "Borrowed Tongue" was released on LP and eventually reissued on German label Alien Transistor.

The best found family dynamic always involves an egotistical disaster bi wannabe superhero, his tall buff himbo boyfriend, and their adopted daughter.
