De Algemene Verwarring #110 - 15 April 2024

Pictured below is Claire Mahoney, the woman behind the project Thistle Group, who has just recently collaborated with P. Wits to release a 7" on the I Dischi Del Barone label from Sweden. The 49th release on the label that only releases singles. Both artists are from New-Zealand. Thistle Group until now only released a cassette on 20 copies and a 7" on the Soft Abuse label. P. Wits might be a bit more known thanks to the 7" release on Belgian label Knotwilg Records. And it's an excellent single, maybe one of the highlights in the IDDB catalog. But contrary to what I said in the radio show, the most recent releases on the label were not less interesting to me when I look at the list now. I was under the impression that the last few releases were less appealing to me, but there's releases from Troth, from Eyes Of The Amaryllis, 番長 Taste, and the very last one was the harsh noise banger from Zwangsbeglucktertum, so what the hell was I thinking, seriously. Excellent label, excellent series of singles, buy them all if you can find them. Also, IDDB50 might be the last one, not sure about that, and I would be extremely sad if the label stops, but knowing that in the beginning they were 8 euro and now they are already 12 euro I can understand why it's not exactly rewarding to release singles... You really have to be a total freak like me for buying them and an even more total freak to put your money in such releases. Anyway, it's been quite a ride, so thanks to Matthias for all these wonderful releases.

I didn't know what to say, Nick had never yelled at me or opened up to me like this before so likely terrified of my response, Smiley took the reigns; "You're beautiful, no doubt Nocky. We just want you to see it this way..."

His voice trailed off as Nick snapped, punching his chair; "Shut up Smiley! You think you know it all cause you're older than us but truthfully you're less put together than Oatches and me! And see it your way? I see that even though you said you had me and wouldn't judge me, you sit and berate me and belittle me! I hear you two talking shit about me! I feel the judgment! I have energy too, ya know!? My emotions are in check! Believe me it's taking a lot for me to say this but I'm through!! Through trying to please y'all and through trying to pretend I'm something I'm not! If I say I can't do something then I fucking CAN'T DO IT!"

Smiley stepped towards Nick, shell-shocked from Nick's icebreakers tyrant, but before he could say anything I chimed in with tears running down my face, "I just wanted the best for you!"

"Don't you think I know what's best for me," Nick edged daggers into my soul.

"Dude, you don't have to be so harsh;" Smikey defended as I turned away, palm in face. "Pat's only trying to help."

"Like I want to say I can't do something Smiley," he retorted a snort. "Behging me to be something I'm not or do something I can't is like asking you to put down a cheeseburger when your sad and looking for your parents. I wouldn't do that."

Nick's voice was much calmer now, so much so that he wheeled over to me to grab my hand, as I realized he had already had Smiley's in his other hand.

Nick stared at us with his deep and fiery burning black eyes as he said lovingly, "The best thing for you to do is to accept me for who and how I am. I know you want the best for me," he looked at us both; "but challenging me when I already have daily challenges of myself is benign of you. Inconsiderate even."

He let go of Smiley's hand to grab both of mine then healed me with a beautiful gaze of reconciliation and understanding by saying, "Pat, I don't ask about your family because I know it's a soft and sore subject. I know they hurt you every time they pile on crap to you but never REALLY ask how you're feeling or doing. I know that even though your brother Casey is your idol you cannot stand him because he took the love you wanted! I know forbidden love is..." He shared an exchanged with himself before coming back to say; "forbidden. But I love you and so does Smiley!"

He let go of my hands to quickly grab hold of Smiley's ensuring him that he, too, is loved and not only by his innocent peck on Smiley's now mostly salted cheek but by his words.

"Smiley," Nick said endearingly. "Baby, uou know without you this poly relationship wouldn't work. You are the glue that holds this threesome together."

Sage told me a long time ago that Smiley got his name from yss eating a lot and being Smiley about his food buf also and more importantly by smiling through the pain.

His sweets and food would comfort him to get to that state if don't give a fuck.

So when Nick said the following, it took the air out of my lungs.

"Even if you never find your oarents," Nick said to Smiley. "Patches and I will always comfort you more than husbands and best friends and food do for you – but like the unconditional loving parents that you deserve."

Smiley sniffled away a tear from his nose as I cheerfully said, grabbing both of their hands, "I'll be the mom!"

Nick laughed, our fight over as he chuckled out, "Then that makes the dad!"

We all smiled — purple eyes met amber eyes met fiery black eyes.

"Just know," Nick quipped. "If you get outta line then you might get a spanking!"

Smiley smiled his gorgeous and famous smile as he kissed us both to affirm, "O just might like that!"

TAFSIR: Risale-i Nur: The Twenty-Ninth Letter - Part 58

The Second Way starts from the outer world; it gazes on the reflections of the divine names and attributes in their places of manifestation in the greater sphere, then it enters the inner world. It observes their lights on a small scale in the sphere of the heart and opens up the shortest way within them. It sees that the heart is a mirror to the Eternally Besoughted One, and is united with the goal it is seeking.

If people who travel the first way are unsuccessful in killing the evil- commanding soul, and if they cannot give up the desires of the flesh and break the ego, they fall from the rank of thanks to that of pride, then descend from pride to conceit. If such a person feels the captivation of love and becomes intoxicated by it, he will make high-flown claims far exceeding his mark, called ecstatic utterances. This is harmful both for himself and for others.

For example, if a lieutenant becomes conceited out of pleasure at his position of command, he will suppose himself to be a field marshal and will confuse his small sphere with the universal one. He will confuse a sun that appears in a small mirror with the sun whose manifestation appears in all its splendour on the surface of the sea, due to their similarity in one respect.

In just the same way, there are many people of sainthood who, resembling the difference between a fly and a peacock, see themselves as greater than those who in reality are greater than them to the same degree; that is how they see it and they think they are right. I myself even saw someone whose heart had just been awakened and had faintly perceived in himself the mystery of sainthood; he supposed himself to be the supreme spiritual pole and assumed airs accordingly. I said to him: “My brother, just as the law of sovereignty has particular and universal manifestations from the office of Prime Minister down to that of District Officer, so sainthood and the rank of spiritual pole have varying spheres and manifestations. Each station has many shades and shadows. I have also seen many people who thought themselves to be Mahdis of a sort, and they proclaimed their Mahdiship. Such people are not liars and deceivers, they are deceived. They suppose what they see to be reality. As the divine names have manifestations from the sphere of the Sublime Throne down to an atom, and their places of manifestation differ to the same degree; so the degrees of sainthood, which consist of manifesting the names, differ in the same way. The most important reason for the confusion is this:

In some of the stations of the saints, the characteristics of the Mahdi’s function may be observed, or a special relation may be formed with the Supreme Spiritual Pole, or with Khidr; certain stations are connected with certain famous persons. In fact, the stations are called the station of Khidr, the station of Uwais, or the station of the Mahdi. Because of this, people who attain to these stations or to minor samples or shadows of them, suppose themselves to be the famous persons connected with them. They suppose themselves to be Khidr, or the Mahdi, or the Supreme Spiritual Pole. If such a person’s ego does not seek rank and position, he is not condemned to the state. His excessively high-flown claims are deemed ecstatic utterances for which he is probably not responsible. But if his ego is secretly set on acquiring rank and position, and if he defeated by it and leaves off thanks and becomes proud, from there he will gradually fall into arrogance, or descend to the depths of madness, or deviate from the path of truth. For he reckons the great saints to be like himself and his good opinion of them is spoiled, for however arrogant a soul is, it still perceives its own faults. Comparing those great saints with himself, he imagines them to be at fault. His respect towards the prophets diminishes, even.

Home Cooking - Soup with Steve

For nine years, my wife and I dedicated our Sundays between mid-December and mid-March to making at least eight gallons of some kind of soup for the homeless folks who spent evenings at the YSS Winter Freeze Shelter. It was usually 14 or 15 soups per season, and we would prepare the traditional soups like beef and chicken noodle, but every once in a while we would create something unique. Our best example is our Spinach-Chicken-Tortellini Soup, an offering that can be a meal on its own or can be served in smaller portions as an appetizer. The spinach and seasoned chicken (I marinate mine the night before) add flavor, but I choose to season this soup with hints of cajun and barbecue mixes because it adds to the surprising flavor. To prepare three gallons, here are the ingredients and the instructions:

Spinach-Chicken-Tortellini Soup.

Ingredients:

One whole chickenThree pounds of chicken breastStalk of celeryBag of whole carrotsTwo white onionsOne pound of spinachOne pound of cheese tortelliniYour favorite cajun seasoningYour favorite barbecue sauce

Instructions:

Boil and simmer one whole chicken in three gallons of stock along with celery, chopped carrots and chopped onion to make the stock for the soup.Once finished, remove what’s left of the chicken, peal the meat from the skeleton, and add back it to the broth along with the vegetables.Add to the broth the cajun seasoning and barbecue sauce by taste.Season the chicken breast and roast at 350 degrees until it reaches 165 degrees in its middle; once rested for five minutes, chop the chicken and add to the simmering pot.Chop additional celery, carrots, and onion and add.After an hour-long simmer, add the spinach and stir.About 15 minutes later, add the ravoli and continue to simmer for another 15 minutes.Serve and enjoy. The UNSC Gettysburg was one of the last Marathon-class cruisers ever built. Her hull was left unfinished and surprisingly unnoticed during the Battle of Earth as she sat in drydock at the Reyes-McLees Shipyards orbiting Mars. When the Human-Covenant War ended and the Marathon-class saw itself steadily replaced by the new Autumn-class cruiser, the hull almost ended up scrapped. ONI however, having seen the effectiveness of the UNSC Midsummer Night, acquired the incomplete vessel. With more room to maneuver after the War, ONI felt that with doctrine changing, another experiment was in order. Naval engagements with the Covenant Remnant were more of a nuisance now, and the few worlds that the UNSC had to defend were more than capable of fighting off anything the shattered remains of the Covenant fleet on their own, or at least holding the line until help arrived. With the orbital playing field working in favor of the UNSC, ground supremacy was now a necessity in order to advance human interests, especially during conflicts involving Forerunner sites.

This led to Project: MIDSUMMER NIGHT, named after the frigate who pioneered the initial attempts by ONI to make stealth-capable ships meant for combat strikes deep behind enemy lines back in 2535. The idea, to see if a refit Marathon-class could be re-purposed from combat specialization to ground combat support much like the refit Phoenix-class ships in the early years of the War. With space in her two hangars reduced from the stock version of the cruiser to afford more room for crew space and a small S-Deck for Spartan armament and deployment, the standard Broadsword and Longsword fighters were replaced by Sabre fighters to save space. One of her MAC guns was also pulled out, with the remaining one getting an updated variant of the weapon the Pillar of Autumn used during her short service time after the refit for Operation: RED FLAG. These modifications made space for not only crew and complement, but internal structural support and heat shielding.

Her most notable feature, however, was an internal factory in the engineering section of the ship. This foundry could produce ammunition, arms, personal armor, and replacement parts so long as the ship could find a source of materials for the mining drones aboard to bring back. With access to the right materials, usually harvested from asteroids or glassed planets, the Gettysburg’s only restriction to her operational range was how many rations she could carry for her crew before needing resupply. Luckily, Prowlers could provide resupply with impunity.

With her construction and refit being kept in the open as a sign of good will to the UNSC Navy, she was ready for service by late 2555 with her shakedown cruise happening a few months later. Mere weeks after being cleared for full service with ONI, she was slotted to support counter-Insurrection operations and acted as the command center for Vice Admiral Carson, whose daughter was killed during one of the initial terror bombing. After the campaign came to a close in mid-2557, Carson retired and the Gettysburg’s captain was promoted Rear Admiral. Gettysburg was put in for a long refit and repair cycle as well as another set of experimental trials. The shielding and stealth tech during her initial run required the crew to have Huragok among their numbers, with plenty of advancements being made in UNSC tech since her launch, ONI wanted to see how the ship would operate without any alien crew members. After her final refit, she was put under command of Captain Yousef Almasi where she served two tours creating trouble in Storm Covenant territory before his retirement in 2561. The XO, Commander Joshua-077, was given command and was to be promoted to Captain after the ship returned to Earth after the annual Reach Memorial. When jumping back from Epsilon Eridani to Sol, the Gettysburg suffered a Slipspace Drive malfunction and has been assumed lost with all hands.
