🏳️‍🌈 Apply now to get $10,000 for your school! 🏳️‍⚧️
Over the past 2 years, we've granted over $1 million to students across the U.S. through our 50 States, 50 Grants, 5,000 voices initiative to help make their schools more welcoming for LGBTQ+ students.
And yup - we're doing it again.
Do you have an idea that would help make your school better for LGBTQ+ students? Maybe like building...
🟣 A gender-affirming closet
🟣 Your school's first Pride parade
🟣 An LGBTQ+ mural on campus
🟣 A safe space or community garden, or
🟣 Resources for your GSA club?
See some past projects from other students here for inspo.
We know that students know what they need most at their own schools - so middle and high school students across the U.S., DC, and territories can apply now through April 1 for one of our school grants to win up to $10,000 to actually make your project a reality!
The application, FAQs, and more are all available at 50states50grants.org.
Apply now through April 1 - can't wait to see what you all come up with.

Four Eyes by Rex Ogle & Dave Valeza. Scholastic Graphix, 2023. 9781338574968. 220pp. https://www.powells.com/book/-9781338574968?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Rex just started middle school, but there's a lack of familiar faces there because school district boundaries have just been redrawn. He and his friend Drew aren't as close as they were in grade school, and Drew's friends all seem to be jerks. Rex has problems at school as he and his family figure out that he can't see well and that he needs glasses. These problems are exacerbated by the fact this his mom and stepfather don't have much money, and he has to settle for glasses that are less than stylish. Cue Rex becoming the center of attention for all of the jerks at school. Though his family is supportive (except for his birth father, who seems like a real bastard), it takes Rex a while to appreciate them. And (minor spoiler) of course he becomes friends with the comic book-reading kid who the jerks at school also make fun of.
I loved this book far more than I expected to based on the back cover blurb (heading: "What A Spectacle") and I highly recommend it for children's library collections. The art is great and works together perfectly with the words in a balance that's hard to achieve. This is an example of the best of the Scholastic Graphix style of storytelling -- there's a problem at the center, some realistic complications, and the story feels personal.

I was in highschool during the start of the scene kids days. A Day to Remember, Suicide Silence, BVB, FIR, all that shit. I was DEFINITELY poser-looking because my folks were hardcore religious and had to be sneaky about my appearance. Sucked that it was hard to make friends because, understandably, I 1000% came off as a poser but it was sort of fun to blindside them with my music knowledge. By the time I graduated and moved out my taste had evolved to proper metal and went full on metalhead now that I had control of my appearance. Almost immediately had people from my highschool trying to call me out as a poser or some had said "wow I never knew you were into that" haha. Trying to find your way in highschool is a rough fuckin ride.
Amen... and don't even get me started on middleschool... how did we even survive that???? Lol.
Thanks for sharing!

all the books i’ve read in middle school ELA
In my district middle school in 6-8 or ages 11-14. I also left middle school in 2019 so things might of changed and I don’t remember most of the books.
These are also books that we’ve read as a class and not my personal reading.
6th Grade:
A Christmas Carol; Charles Dickens : I don’t know if we actually read the book or just watched the movie but he movie good. 7/10 would recommend.
The Gift of the Magi; O. Henry: We did read this book then had to do a lit analysis on it. Pretty good. I enjoyed it. 9/10 would recommend.
Pax; Sara Pennypacker : I don’t remember this book very much but I remembered liking it so 9/10.
Freddie in the Shade: Do not remember this book at all so 5/10.
7th Grade:
A Long Walk to Water; Linda Sue Park:   It took our class forever to read this book but it was good and kept my attention. 9/10 would recommend.
Swimming for her Life: Again I do not remember this book at all so 5/10.
8th Grade:
Animal Farm; George Orwell: Hated this book. Not my favorite. 4/10.
The Diary of Anne Frank; Anne Frank: I didn’t ready it. We read the play version but I didn’t have to read so that was good. I did like the history behind it. 9/10 would recommend.
The Tell-Tale Heart; Edgar Allen Poe: Not my favorite but not bad. 8/10.
The Gift of the Magi; O. Henry: Liked this book better the second time around. 9/10.

And yup - we're doing it again. It's kinda like free money, y'all!
If you're in the U.S., DC, and territories and have an idea that would help make your school better for LGBTQ+ students (maybe like building a gender-affirming closet or gender-neutral restroom, hosting you school's first Pride celebration or educational conference, commissioning a queer artist to paint a mural on campus...) then middle and high school students can apply now through April 1, 2024 and we might just be able to help you make it a reality.
See some past projects from other students here for inspo.
