“Robyn, will you ever stop talking about plot poinst Mashima completely forgot about or should’ve expanded on?”
NO! My topic today is Gajeel and Metalicana’s seemingly complicated relationship!
From the second Gajeel starts talking about Metalicana, it’s extremely clear he resents the fuck out of him for leaving. He plays the part that he could not give a single shit where he is, and I genuinely believe there is some truth to that. Coming from someone who was left by their father, I can see a bit of myself in Gajeel: you want to be so mad and pretend you don’t care - and to some degree, you don’t - but there is that lasting hurt.
And while I know that garbage arc where Gray, for some dumb reason I can’t remember, betrays the guild/Natsu isn’t canon, that arc was still keen enough to remember that Gajeel resents Metalicana to an extent that when he hears about the mere possibility of his surrogate father being alive, he doesn’t even bat an eye. He goes as far to question Natsu and Wendy why they care about someone who abandoned them.
This part of Gajeel’s character got out on the back burner so they could focus on his relationship with Levy, and I’m mostly okay with that because I love Gajeel and Levy’s love story, but it would have been amazing to see more about it.
Basically, Gajeel has daddy issues and Mashima should have exploited that for my projection.

Restlessly, Gajeel ran his fingers over the ground. Deep down in the rock he could feel traces of ore, but it was more a whisper than a call. Aluminium, probably. Or nickel.
He sighed. It had been ages since he had last eaten raw iron, unsmelted, freshly broken from the intestines of the earth. A taste that evoked memories from a time when things had been easy and full of wonder. His thoughts digressed...
"C'mon, eat already. Yer crammin' down all kinds of stuff all the time."
The boy weighs the grey-black lump in his scratched hand, pulling a face.
"You can't eat rocks."
With an indignant snorting, the dragon gives the boy a mighty slap on the back of his head, thus making him tip forward, lengthways into the dust.
"Moron! Tha's not a rock, it's hematite. Iron ore. Eat."
The kid gets back up, defiantly crossing his arms but without letting go of the rock.
"But you can't eat iron either!"
"Yes, we can, you and I. 'S nothin' better. Now, try!"
To prove his point, the dragon bites a clashing hole into the rock wall, which is covered in reddish brown sediment, and crunches the ore with delight. The rumbling and tumbling from his mouth sounds like a debris avalanche thundering down the slope towards them, but the boy is not afraid.
He turns the nugget to and fro. Eating dirt is something he doesn't mind. The villagers' wastes were always dirty. And sometimes, when his hunger had been unbearable and there had been nothing edible to be found, he had chewed on leaves and twigs from the forest floor or nibbled on tree barks like a deer.
Now there is always plenty of food. Real food. The dragon takes care of that.
Doubtfully, he lifts the lump and sinks his teeth into it.
The raw ore crunches in his mouth like sand, the brittle crumbs scratch his tongue.
But it tastes good. Warm and bloody and sweet like the meat of a freshly killed animal.
Never in his life has he eaten something so amazing.
He craves more.
More.
Greedily, he wolfs down the pieces of ore the chuckling dragon keeps knocking out of the rock wall for him, chews and gulps, gulps an chews as if he were starving.
Small chips tear open his palate and throat. His stomach burns, but he can't stop eating. Rusty saliva is dripping from the corners of his mouth.
And then the iron starts to sing in his veins. The force within him, which he can now call all by himself, shouts its jubilant response as if it had already waited for the iron to come. Magic, the dragon said, not some devilish power. It bubbles up like a geyser, roars through his blood like a waterfall until he's all dizzy.
The skin on his bare arms begins to prickle as iron scales burst out from it. His legs, his face, his ribcage under the ragged tunic. Everything turns into iron. But not cold and rigid. Flexible and warm and hard like the dragon's hide, the dragon who is so strong and invulnerable.
He wonders, might he be as strong as the dragon now, too?
He grabs the nearest chunk of hematite with both hands and breaks it apart as easily as if it were but a piece of bread. The boy beams all over his face.
Next to him, the dragon bursts out into a booming laughter until little pieces of gravel drizzle down the rock wall, a garnet ember sparkling in his dark eyes. His huge paw slams the boy against his armoured chest, but this time, the tough hug hardly hurts.
"Hah! Tha's my brat!"
And suddenly the boy understands: the dragon is proud of him. For the first time in his life, somebody is proud of him.
Now he wants to eat even more iron.

Gajeel and Wendy
They are just so brother-and-sister-with-a-large-enough-age-gap-that-they-often-get-mistaken-as-dad-and-daughter-core its insane.
Add levy and they literally look like a little family when they go out in public . I could totally see gajeel trying to steal wendy from team natsu with the excuse that she looks like gajeel and levy’s secret lovechild. Erza of course doesn't let that happen considering that Wendy could also be her and jellas secret love child, but she doesn't say that and instead says that changing Wendy’s team would be too much paperwork, so she cannot possibly transfer to Gajeels team.( the paper work doesn’t exist everyone is too scared to call her out on it though)
I feel like Wendy already considers most of the men in the guild to be her brothers but especially gajeel and natsu because not only do they have the same magic type, but they were literally raised together. Just the idea that gajeel,natsu, and wendy have a little dragon slayer get together ( they invite laxus and occasionally he pops up) where they do dragon things like stuff their mouth full of iron, fire, and sky(?), talk about their childhood and just be a little feral as a treat for being all proper( having basic human etiquette ).
Imagine gajeel letting wendy put bows in his hair because he wants her to feel like a kid for a bit longer and its remind him of of metalicana(?) playing with his hair. Or Wendy giving gajeel a talk about how he's going to be a great dad to his and Levy’s kids because he is already such a great brother. Or gajeel seeing how he wants his kids to be when they grow up while looking at Wendy. Think about Wendy being dragged into a guild brawl and absolutely blowing through everyone and gajeel standing there all smug because that's his little sister!
Imagine the guilt Gajeel feels knowing how many times Wendy has been abandoned at her young age. How he tries to train her to be stronger. If they get their memories back, how they compare the people they are now to the kids they started off as.
Think of the Sibling angst possibilities of Gajeel not being anything, how Wendy remembers him due to his tough life in phantom. Think about how much of each other's lives they missed? The possibilities are ENDLESS.
It’s criminal that we don't get to see more of them!

Okay okay, so I have this one ship that I love but it's so rare it's painful. Do you, have any Gajeel x Natsu headcanons. Please? Pretty please? 🥺
You aren't alone, we had some Najeel headcanons over here~
They fight so often that they actually learn to recognize each other's magic by the little details, scent and feel and even taste, plus the heat. Whenever Gajeel fights someone who also uses fire magic, he scoffs, 'cause it's not nearly as intense as Natsu's.
Natsu gets a special rush when Gajeel glares at him with those red eyes. He starts pissing Gajeel off on purpose as soon as he knows Gajeel likes him too much to do more than glare.
Natsu also delivers Gajeel the promised song thanks to losing the bet during the Tartaros arc. It's pathetic--he needs help from so many people just to figure out what he's doing and to compose something that doesn't halfway suck....but Gajeel ends up liking it.
They can't lie to each other. With Natsu, it's because he just sucks at lying outright and Gajeel always calls him on it. With Gajeel, though, it's because Natsu actually knows him really well and knows his tells.
Gajeel still likes playing with knives, and Natsu finds that very hot.
Similar to how Natsu is very protective of his scarf, Gajeel is very protective of his hair. He may put enough product in it to keep it contained for special occasions, but that's all--he doesn't respond well to his hair getting damaged and cuts it very rarely. Their first big fight--like couples have, not like they usually have--comes after Natsu cranks the heat up too high during a sparring match and burns some of it. Gajeel sulks and Natsu apologizes later.
Well into their relationship, Gajeel gets another piercing, on the side of his jaw. Natsu noticed it but took a while to ask, and Gajeel refused to explain it except that it was meaningful. Turns out it's the spot where Natsu first kissed him, and he only got it once he realized he actually loved Natsu. The piercings themselves date back to a practice Gajeel picked up in childhood I'll elaborate on in a different post.
Gajeel does not have the fond feelings towards Metalicana that Natsu does towards Igneel. Natsu gets on his nerves inquiring about it, and it causes their second major fight, because while Gajeel loved Metalicana, the wounds left by their sudden disappearance never really went away.
Natsu and Gajeel never get married. The closest they get is some tattoo work implying their relationship.
NS/FW:
Natsu is exceptionally fond of Gajeel's biceps and will hold onto them while they're going at it.
Likewise, Gajeel especially loves Natsu's bare shoulders, and that's where his hands often end up.
Natsu is very vocal during sex, while Gajeel comparatively is almost entirely wordless.
Natsu learns to recognize when Gajeel is about to initiate foreplay because he'll be messing with playlists on his phone. He likes music to be playing during the act.

This time it's a Tumblr post that's got me talking but here's the thing
Shibano writes Mashima's characters better than Mashima himself.
In the twin dragons of Sabertooth he actually managed to give more personality to Yukino, Orga and Rufus.
Yukino has a more feisty side to her and is shown as very capable and although both Orga and Rufus are only there for a couple of scenes with the one most of note being their interaction with Rogue, we still get to see Orga showing that he is actually quite smart where he identified that the spots on Frosch's suit were different than usual when Rufus -the guy who prides himself on remembering everything- didn't (this scene is the main reason I see them as being best friends if not a couple outside of them always being put together in any shots they both are in including that one cover. Orga taking note of small details absolutely came from Rufus' influence and I love that)
Sting and Rogue also get really developed personalities as well because they don't get much of that in the main story really. Like Rogue getting mad at Sting for hurting Frosch's feelings and disbanding the team over it is just so petty to me. It adds on to the pettiness that the first thing Rogue does when they team up again and Sting is in direct danger is Rogue just slapping him and then just going "yes I feel much better now" which was probably one of the best things I could have ever seen.
The Rhodonite manga is great too because not only does Levy get her time to shine of actually showing why she was nominated S-class but we get the Juvia I actually like in this one. Yeah she still has her quips about Gray as jokes but it isn't her whole thing. And she's actually got other reasons for being there besides tailing Gray which is great. Plus we get Gajeel backstory and more asshole Gajeel which was fun to read. Then in the second half we get to see his interactions with Cobra and how he begrudgingly teams up with him to save the kids (delving into Gajeel's love of children because it isn't touched on much except a couple lines in the series and one or two in a character moment in the game)
Then the Lightning god one which I already adore for the additional Freed content (and Ponytailed Freed had me desperate to draw it) but also the way it handles Laxus and Freed's relationship is chef's kiss.
Half the time Freed's attachment to Laxus is made into a joke (which is probably why some compare him to Juvia in that regard although thankfully Freed hasn't been character assassinated yet) but here it's tackled with a serious tone. The first half is mostly a rescue mission and the thunder legion aren't too important in it since it's mostly Laxus although Freed does try to encourage Laxus to understand Blue Pegasus.
The second half is the real heavy hitters. The villain of that half tricks the Thunder legion into thinking she's Laxus and gaslights them by telling them that they call themselves his body guards and yet they stand behind Laxus, letting him take the damage. To which Laxus reminds them why that happens (also small backstory to how they formed a team with Laxus and I'm a sucker for a good bit of backstory. Plus I love looking at teen Laxus because he's so scrawny compared to what he is in present canon and it's funny to me to see that the second muscliest guy in the guild was a scrawny teen. Even Elfman was decently bulky meanwhile Laxus was lanky and I love it)
It's the best iterations of a lot of these characters outside or their original arcs where the got introduced and grew. I desperately wish the main story (I guess 100 yrs quest) was written with this same level of care and detail.
Hell, the author actually apologises in a note for a mistake he made in one of the chapters in the Rhodonite manga (if I remember right, he got the amount of years that Gajeel had been away from Denish wrong and saying a year that wouldn't have worked as Gajeel would still have been with Metalicana.) And I love his little sketch at the end of the Rhodonite manga.

Panther Lily: Hogwarts AU
Panther Lily is a Half-Blood wizard that was born on the 12th of June 1952 and started attending Hogwarts on the 1st of September 1964, being sorted into Gryffindor house.
He was a close friend of Igneel, Grandenney, Metalicana, Weisslogia and Skiadrum (the Marauders) but didn't usually play pranks with them so unlike his two idiot roommates, he graduated with a clean record.
After graduating from Hogwarts, he started working as an Auror and eventually became an Animagus with his form being a panther.
Around this time, he meet and fell in love with a woman named Shagotte who, unbeknownst to him, was a Maledictus carrier.
She never told him the truth and he believed that she left him when she permanently turned into her cat form, not knowing about her family's curse.
He was also unaware that he was the father of the child that she was pregnant with when she permenently turned into her cat form with the kitten eventually being adopted by Igneel and Grandenney's daughter Wendy.
He eventually participated in the Battle of Hogwarts with his fellow Order members where he was believed to have passed away but in reality, he was sent forward in time due to a mishap with a Time Turner during the battle.
He has a Blackthorn wand with a Phoenix Feather Core.
His Patronus is a Panther.
His favorite subjects are Defense Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration.
His least favorite subjects are Charms and Divination.
