Arthur is used to the court, he is used to standing at a certain distance from his interlocutor, he is used to etiquette and protocols, to speaking in a certain tone of voice, to never lowering his eyes showing weakness and, as a result, he is used to servile people, to people who never respond to him in kind and to making do when something goes wrong and he would only need a hand on his shoulder because he would not dare ask for anything more.
Merlin is none of these things.
Merlin invades his personal space, responds to him in kind, hugs him when something goes wrong and reassures him with kind but firm words.
Arthur does not know why he expected Hunith to be something different, after all, Merlin must have taken after someone in the family.
Hunith, when Merlin decides to visit her and take Arthur with him because "you have to get to know my mother better!", bows on the first day and calls him sire.
On the second day, she already has him help in the kitchens and teaches him how to prepare a meal from scratch, not commenting on the fact that he doesn't even know how to mix a bit of flour and water and, indeed, resting a hand on his shoulder congratulating him when -Arthur knows- he has done the bare minimum.
On the third day, she hugs him.
Arthur holds her so tightly that he is sure he will hurt her, but he has never been hugged like this, not even by Merlin, and Arthur absolutely will not cry.
That night, lying on the bed on the floor with Merlin, Arthur hugs him and thanks him.
Merlin laughs and tells him he now expects a meal prepared from scratch from him.

Merlin fanfic idea
I have a Merlin fanfiction idea I wanted to share. I don’t know if it has already been done, but I find the idea interesting so I’m going to share it anyway lol.
So, Merlin fans far and wide, do you remember the episode where Merlin gets Gwen to kiss Arthur (via magic) and appears like Merlin felt the kiss through the magic? Then later Arthur kisses Gwen again but he feels it isn’t the same? Well, I always felt they were implying that Merlin’s friendship/brotherly type love broke the spell as he truely does love Arthur.
However, my idea is of course going along the lines of that’s not the case. The fanfiction idea is that Merlin does truly love Arthur but it takes kissing Arthur through Gwen to figure himself out and realise his love for Arthur is far more mere friendship or brotherly love. It’s a love above all others and Merlin kind of struggles knowing how to be around Arthur for a while but does his best to hide how he’s struggling with himself a little right now. (Of course Arthur picks up on Merlin’s sudden distancing but can’t figure out what’s wrong).
As for Arthur, he can’t stop thinking about that first kiss with Gwen and how different the second one felt. How it didn’t even feeling like he was kissing the same person, and maybe to some degree, deep down he knows that somehow he wasn’t kissing her. That it was someone else. However, Merlin sudden distancing, distracts Arthur from using any brain cells.
This is only a rough idea so I don’t know the ins and outs of what happens next but basically, something something something, Arthur has to kiss Merlin for some reason (could be mouth to mouth, to break a spell, or because he realises he cares for Merlin far more then maybe he should and therefor may actually have feelings for the clumsy man servant) and with that kiss realises it was Merlin all along. Merlin had been the one he kissed! It feels just like the first one with Gwen. Maybe he even realises in that moment that magic was involved and that Merlin was the one using the magic but that’s okay because Arthur trust Merlin more than anyone he’s ever met and knows in his heart Merlin would never hurt anyone. Yes, he would like some answers, like why he would practice magic here of all places, but for now that doesn’t matter. He’s kissing Merlin and Merlin is kissing back. The love is mutual, and right now that’s all that matters in this world.

percival, raised by druids and bonded strongly with mordred over that and does Not agree with the persecution of magic in camelot, had an inkling that merlin had magic but no proof: no. i have magic.
*leon and elyan exchange a look, elyan, amused and leon, exhausted, elyan shrugs*
elyan, knows how much gwen adores merlin and completely understands her stance bc merlin…is merlin, down to clown and put on a show, really playing up the dramatics: no! i have magic.
leon, exhausted, has known of merlin’s magic since he stepped foot in camelot, knows of his feelings for arthur and arthur’s feelings for him, knows arthur knows of merlin’s magic and wouldn’t harm him, thinks everyone is being absolutely ridiculous:
*the knights stare hard at leon and even merlin looks slightly offended at leon not jumping to his defense with the rest of the knights, arthur hasn’t said anything and is staring at leon expectantly*
leon, sighing: …no. i have magic.

The Ealdor episode is so fucking wild. Like, Merlin hears his village is in trouble and his mom is having a tough time so he’s like ok bye I’m going home forever and Arthur is like…. wait you're never coming back? So his besotted ass just follows him there. Like he's the ONLY heir to the throne and he says nothing to his father, just leaves in the middle of the night to go to some random village that isn't even a part of his kingdom. Not me sitting here thinking about writing a fic where we start with Arthur dying in Merlin's arms after Camlaan and it's all tragedy and then the magic rises and they both end up back at that first day, in the marketplace, Merlin with "How long have you been training to be a prat, my lord?" dying on his lips as they stare at each other, fascinated, horrified, so fucking relieved because they both remember ALL of it and none of it's happened yet and this time they can maybe make it to a different, better ending.
And they can do it together.

Arthur has always been alone in his life, surrounded by people but none of whom were really close to him.
His father only allowed him to know what loneliness was not twice, and both times he took away the people closest to him, plunging him into a far worse loneliness.
Leon was his friend until his father reminded him of his place and that knights and future kings are not meant to be friends but to be servants and masters.
Morgana was his friend (in a distorted and complicated way), they spent hours together playing tag and swordplay until his father decided that Morgana was too big and too much of a woman for those activities and that she should devote herself to something else.
Morgana was not happy about this but at least some time later Gwen arrived to keep her company and the two became inseparable.
Arthur had no one.
Arthur always knew that, after Leon and Morgana, every person who stood beside him did so for personal gain and so he was always aloof. He surrounded himself with bootlickers and people who let him get away with everything because he was the future king and that had to be enough.
Then Merlin came along.
With his chattering, his talking back and his complete disregard for court etiquette and customs, his rough manners and constant touching of Arthur as if they were on the same level.
Arthur knows that he could never return to the loneliness of before.
Arthur knows (because he will make sure it doesn't happen because even if the gods came down from the sky to curse him it wouldn't matter to him) that his father won't take Merlin away from him either.
Because Arthur will not let him.

omg omg omg
arthur gives merlin his mothers sigil thinking that hes going to die and wants to finally tell merlin how he feels and what better way of conveying the intensity of his emotions and how serious he is other than marriage? merlin accepts the sigil which means theyre married!! yay!! only. they both survive and arthur QUICKLY realizes that merlin has no idea the significance of the sigil. he has no idea theyre married. and arthur has no idea how to tell him bc then hell have to explain WHY he gave him the sigil aka WHY HE PROPOSED and now that hes not staring death in the face. he just. cant.
blah blah blah time skip to happy ending
the druids invite arthur and merlin to a celebration of the unification of emrys and the once and future king and the fruition of their destinies. merlin and arthur are excited bc finally peace is here and magic is returning and this can be the next big show of trust and reconciliation between camelot and the druids and so theyre there in the druid camp having fun when theyre approached and asked to participate in the ceremony. theres a huge buzzing crowd watching as the elder druid ties their hands together and goes on and on about the magnificence of two men standing before them and their great destinies and how the two sides of the same coin are joined finally as the prophecy said all those years ago. merlin doesnt realize it was a handfasting ceremony until hes talking to a few of the druids later on
anyway. merthur accidental wedding(s). now they both know theyre married but they dont know the other knows theyre married bc different ceremonies and traditions and all that. arthur is all awkward about it bc hes emotionally constipated. merlin is convincing himself he doesnt have to bring it up to arthur bc its not like the DRUID marriage ceremony is legally binding in camelot. they didnt sign any papers or anything. theyre not really married in camelot so arthur doesnt have to know. and then merlin can selfishly keep this truth close to his heart. even if its not reciprocated.
married life shenanigans ensue. merlin and arthur both have to physically stop themselves from calling the other their husband. jealous spats when out in the tavern or when visiting royals/nobles stop on by. leon knows all and is this close to snapping. extra protective idiots. and idk someone catches merlin holding the sigil and explains the significance of it or a druid asks arthur where his husband emrys is and my boy is STRESSED about being caught but then the druid brings up the handfasting ceremony. stupid idiot x stupid idiot.

Wait a damn minute Merlin is an actual nightmare of a servant. Imagine you're the Prince and all of a sudden and only two seconds after surviving an assassination attempt you're stuck with this scrawny, clumsy fucking dude with a really shifty air about him who spends literal days in the tavern with zero notice, steals your food, tried to spy on a guest, doesn't let you hunt, can never fucking be found when you need him even though he is the literal manservant to the prince, which you would think should be a priority but apparently he has better things to do, and is always talking like he's the only thing standing between you and certain death????
