Arthur is used to the court, he is used to standing at a certain distance from his interlocutor, he is used to etiquette and protocols, to speaking in a certain tone of voice, to never lowering his eyes showing weakness and, as a result, he is used to servile people, to people who never respond to him in kind and to making do when something goes wrong and he would only need a hand on his shoulder because he would not dare ask for anything more.
Merlin is none of these things.
Merlin invades his personal space, responds to him in kind, hugs him when something goes wrong and reassures him with kind but firm words.
Arthur does not know why he expected Hunith to be something different, after all, Merlin must have taken after someone in the family.
Hunith, when Merlin decides to visit her and take Arthur with him because "you have to get to know my mother better!", bows on the first day and calls him sire.
On the second day, she already has him help in the kitchens and teaches him how to prepare a meal from scratch, not commenting on the fact that he doesn't even know how to mix a bit of flour and water and, indeed, resting a hand on his shoulder congratulating him when -Arthur knows- he has done the bare minimum.
On the third day, she hugs him.
Arthur holds her so tightly that he is sure he will hurt her, but he has never been hugged like this, not even by Merlin, and Arthur absolutely will not cry.
That night, lying on the bed on the floor with Merlin, Arthur hugs him and thanks him.
Merlin laughs and tells him he now expects a meal prepared from scratch from him.

Have I posted the knights before? Maybe. I don’t know. I’m not gonna go dig for them.
Anyway here’s what I imagine the knights of the round table look like! I tried to use textual descriptions of them but those are incredibly hard to find (minus Lancelot’s) so a lot of it is just vibes.
In order:
Arthur, Gawain, Lancelot, Bedivere, Balin, Marhault, Dinadan, Sagramor
Bonus Lancelot WIP cause I’m redesigning him to fit his actual description (according to Prose Lancelot) better:

Ran a fun first session of Pendragon today. If PbtA games are a conversation and Traveller is a spreadsheet, Pendragon is an agenda.
Each session covers a whole year, so some agenda items (aging, horse health) can just be checked off. Others require deeper discussion. Some get taken off the agenda after a session. Others are recurring agenda items.
Now I'm doing the research and planning for future sessions. Writing future agendas.

The pain was being sent in ripples and waves to his head, and he could barely balance two thoughts. So he opted on choosing and repeating one like a mantra to keep himself sane: Don’t let Arthur die, don’t let Arthur die, don’t let Arthur die, don’t let Arthur die— Merlin slammed the door open, startling the feast into quiet.
New fic! Beta-ed by @tireddruid ofc

King Arthur sheds his shirt during a very noble act of bravery! A worthy sacrifice, I must say.

Merlin is expressing his displeasure so that the whole castle can hear him while Arthur lies in bed and rolls his eyes because the situation seems truly ridiculous to him.
"You are an idiot! An imbecile! A dollop-head! What the hell were you thinking of-?"
"Merlin, really, do we have to discuss this much longer? As you can see I'm perfectly fine."
Merlin's eyes go golden for a few seconds and Arthur rolls his eyes but shuts his mouth.
"Perfectly fine? You don't look perfectly fine to me because your side is bleeding and I just pulled an arrow out of it!"
Arthur wants to retort that in all the years of their acquaintance he has suffered far worse and that, really, he is fine but Merlin does not allow him to open his mouth.
"It could have been a poisoned arrow. It could have hit you in the stomach and then what would we have done, huh? It could have been a cursed arrow and you could have suffered for days while I tried to figure out how to cure you. Where the hell did you get the idea of putting yourself between me and a damn arrow?!"
Arthur is unimpressed by that speech and lies better in bed because he knows his court sorcerer won't let him go anywhere, at least not that day. "It could have been anything but in the end, it was a very normal arrow," Merlin is about to interrupt him but Arthur doesn't give him time "and even if it had been any of those things you listed it wouldn't have changed anything. I don't care if you are the most powerful sorcerer to ever walk the face of the earth, Merlin, before all this you are my friend and if I see you are in danger I will do everything in my power to save you"
Merlin tightens his lips and lowers his eyes to Arthur's wound as he runs a medicated cream of some kind over it.
"It's because you're an idiot, that's why," Merlin's voice is a bit broken as he tries not to start sobbing because he doesn't want to hear that he's such a girl from Arthur, not at this moment.
But his king apparently really is an idiot.
A brave, stupid, loyal, dollop-head, altruistic idiot.
Merlin could never have hoped for a better King. Or friend.

Merlin prompt
Massive spoilers for all of it, i guess
The end kind of implies that Merlin has waited this entire time and still is waiting for Arthur's return, but what if Arthur kept coming back again and again? Okay so mostly I really want to see those two in basically every era there ever has been in between the show's time and now. Please?

King Arthur Pendragon 3rd Edition and The Boy King
This weekend my spouse and I will be starting a game of Pendragon. We will be playing the 3rd Edition using the supplements Knights Adventurous and The Boy King.
I chose Pendragon 3rd Edition because its approach to play is in line with my current taste. 3rd Edition is more open, less complete and looser. The supplements are mostly about expanding the setting to different regions and cultures, broadening the scope of play.
The Boy King is *like* The Great Pendragon Campaign, however is explicitly an example and start to creating *your own* Arthurian legend. The instructions on how to use The Boy King are very clear in this regard. During the campaign, the game lets go and says "you've seen it, you've done it, now make it yours. Here is a rough chronology of events until Arthur's death, and remember to read Le Morte D'Arthur". However, the fandom expectation that preparation needs to be as complete as presented products, did make folks worried "they wouldn't do it right".
So, Greg took another swing at it with the 5th Edition which is designed to be played with The Great Pendragon Campaign. The GPC is a more event driven, far more complete, with Greg's authorial voice stronger throughout and offers a more guided experience in play. You have more fixed elements in a campaign through Events and Procedures. The supplements provide more procedurally generated events and details to inspire the personal/family stories of the Player Knights. I believe this dynamic works well, judging from the Actual Play I've read and listened to.
I have been wanting to dig into Pendragon for years, and now is as good as time as any. I can't wait to see what happens, and share these experiences.
