ok so ig i'll start with the title From the Sidelines and a little description i have, to pique interest heh
Arthur is Camelot FC's star striker and captain. Merlin is the kitman. Life is hardly ever fair.
anyway . i suppose that's. a little misleading. that being said i think this grew into something waaaaay larger than i originally planned @.@ like it was supposed to be a fun little addition to the surprisingly small amt of footballer arthur fics we have but now this fic has double daddy issues (balinor my beloved...), coming out, sports injuries, shitty coaches (aredick die by my sword) and never making the national team. HUH??? i just wanted merthur to fuck on the pitch... (joke) (just in time for fuck him on the field friday)
also there's side stories. like one is when the players get handcuffed tgt for 24hrs but they've got an uneven amt for it and merlin gets roped in
and then there's the valentine's day arwen special that i somehow accidentally made into a statement about arthur's attitude toward his sexuality?? and feelings for merlin??? through his anxiety about his date with gwen????
“All good?” Merlin asks.
“Never better,” Arthur replies, then pivots and walks directly into his closet. He stares at his barren shoe rack before he feels hands on his shoulders, and Merlin is turning him around and guiding him back out.
“Wrong way,” he hears him say.
“Right.” This time, Arthur marches out his room then down the hall to the front door. “I’ll be back.”
i'm allowed to give this info bc i don't know if i'll ever actually post the extras. i dont' even know when i'm gonna finish the main story sjkdfhgjkf
oh yeah another side story takes place in 2007 (that might be the title for it idk) and it's about uther buying camelot fc for arthur's tenth birthday LOL dont question the legaltiy of arthur playing for his father's club. i dont know and i dont care. this is fiction SIMILARLY dont say shit abt arthur being a striker and captain. it's happened before. it's literally fine. dont even worry about it
there's like. ik i rly only talked about the side stories but u have to realize just how much has already gone into this fic and i wouldn't even say i'm halfway done. i don't think i've written out a single match which is also funny bc i've been keeping up with the prem and actually think i can do it now. i just keep dragging my feet abt it lol
i think the hardest part for me is when im gonna have to seriously injure arthur. i didnt want to but i think it's an important way for his and merlin's relationship to progress and also would explain merlin's attitude toward him in january. its less abt injuring him and more abt him having to sit out of games not for like. lineup stats/compatibility reasons
oh my god typing this all out made me realize we haven't met like. half of the guys on the team yet. i was sitting here like "i need to rewatch eps with all the knights bc i dont trust myself to write percy and elyan accurately" but now i just realized i dont even know if mordred is on the like. squad yet or if he's still with the u18s (after a brief check with my info page he is. i'm gonna be sick)

Merlin has just about had it with the guy stealing his parking spot every fucking day he comes home from work. Honestly, if he wants covered parking, he can feel free to buy it. But Merlin is not giving up his space so easily-- he writes a strongly worded letter, planning to leave it under the tosser's windshield wiper and call it a day, except when he gets there... the owner has not left his car, and Merlin hates his life because good lord he is hot.

hey! im obsessed with arthurs welsh christmas, that fic altered my brain chemistry. im searching currently, but i was wondering if you could rec any more of your merthur fics that are similar? It is the middle of the night in a small village in Wales, and a helpful officer directs him to a B&B for the night.
There he finds a kindly innkeeper, his very weird historian gremlin nephew, odd people, odd situations, and even odder - himself.
A slightly absurd and very gentle story about coming back to yourself, finding a true family, and realizing that historian gremlins are actually really hot and rather amazing, and perfect to fall in love with.
That’s the most similar to Welsh Christmas. Features small quirky town, low stakes, and falling in love.

Merlin skips a year of school when he is seven and ends up in Year Four instead of Year Three. The older kids all pick on him and the worst is by far Arthur. A stolen book brings Arthur and Merlin together, and they become best friends. Sadly, nothing they do can stop Arthur from being sent away.
Morgana pressures Arthur to hit on a guy in the pub. He does it to shut her up, but it turns out Emrys is actually a lot of fun to be around. One date turns into many. Arthur has never been happier.
Seems like fate had something else in store for Arthur and Merlin after all.
It’s a shorter fic, but you get childhood cuteness and then grown up flirtation and dating.
The Ethics of Sleeping with a Hot Stranger
In which Merlin meets Arthur at a club and goes home with him, only to find out that Arthur's occupation is less than undesirable. Good thing he has supportive friends who won't at all roast him for his poor life choices.
Merlin finds out Arthur is a cop and has a small crisis about it. But it ends in fluff and explanation of Arthur’s poor choice in career.
The Boy I Love, He Got Wavy Black Hair
Merlin heads out early one morning to help Lancelot in his classroom. When he meets Arthur at his office for lunch, his hair is different. Arthur is not a fan.
This one is a bit different since it’s established relationship, but Merlin catches lice. Much Arthur dramatics and teasing ensue.

There is a group of lads who all live together and take way too much enjoyment in playing football together, but there is something more to them than meets the eye. Merlin just hopes it won't affect his growing relationship with their unofficial ringleader Arthur Pendragon.
It’s an urban fantasy au where all the knights are werewolves. It’s still got that fluffy falling for each other low stakes romcom vibe, but there also happens to be werewolves.

A little snippet from my merthur boarding school au (wip-- fic to be posted soon!)
I mentioned this idea forever ago, and I've been thinking about it nonstop for like a year. Finally, I have enough to start sharing it!
I currently only have one and a half chapters but the plan is to post it to ao3 once I have at least three done. Stay tuned! But for now here's this :)
It had all started over the summer. The Penn family had been seated around the breakfast table, the father at the head, the daughter to his left and the son to his right. Their housemaid had shuffled in at the usual time to deliver the morning paper. As he always did, Uther Penn acknowledged her with only a nod, finished his breakfast first, and then opened the paper to the second page. Anything actually worth reading could be found there, he always said. No use in reading the gossip on the front page. His children often questioned this philosophy, but they had long since discovered that he wouldn’t be swayed from it. They’d developed their own system, anyway. While their father skimmed the inside pages, Morgana’s job was to discreetly read the front page, and Arthur’s was to redirect Uther’s attention when needed by asking about another section. This morning, he’d inquired about sports articles.
In predictable Uther fashion, he grumbled at the question and quipped something about patience, before flipping through to find the newest football passage. It was all very routine. Everything from Uther’s subtle smile as he read the passage aloud for Arthur to hear, to the mid-August breeze drifting through the open patio doors fit into the easy peace of a Sunday morning at the Penn household. The whole thing was so relaxed, in fact, that Arthur began to fall into a daze. The drone of his father’s voice mingled with the birdsong outside to create a lullaby that covered his brain in a fine fuzz. His stomach was filled after his meal and the sweet scent of the garden graced his senses with every gentle draft. His eyelids grew heavy.
It was all shattered in an instant, however, when Morgana dropped her fork. The cutlery made a loud clanging as it struck the plate beneath it, and sent a jolt of electric shock through Arthur’s entire body. All eyes turned to her. Without saying a word, she lunged for the paper and frantically smoothed it out on the table. All was silent for a moment. Then–
“Father,” she whispered, voice tense and eyes wide as they found Uther’s. She turned the paper so both her brother and father could see what she was pointing to.
There on the page, beneath Morgana’s elegantly manicured fingernail:
“—body found in Albion Woods, identified to be thirty-four year old Helen Mora. Police are opening an active investigation to gather information about the deceased and any potential leads as to her cause of death. According to the detectives assigned to the case, authorities cannot dismiss suspicions of foul play at this time…”
Arthur felt his blood go cold.
Albion Woods…
“How close to the school was she found?” Uther took a drink from his coffee, still surveying the article from across the table. There was a pause as Morgana read the passage again.
“They didn’t mention the school.”
“They’ll want to question you, Father,” Arthur said carefully. He, too, reached for his coffee and took a sip. It was cold.
“Yes, I suppose they will,” He reached to retrieve the paper from Morgana. “I’ll have to contact Geoffrey. See if we can mitigate the intrusion.”
“You’re just going to– what– pay them off?” She asked, incredulous. “This could be serious! And you’re trying to hush it up?” Uther didn’t appear to have heard her. He was busy scanning the page again. Arthur swallowed.
“She’s right, Father,” he watched Uther’s reaction closely. “It could look suspicious if one of our teachers turns up dead and we resist investigation.”
“Her death in itself reflects poorly for Pendragon. The last thing we need is an investigation.” His father took a huffing breath and tossed the paper down. He continued to stare at it for a moment, his eyes far away. There was a beat, and then Morgana scoffed and shoved herself away from the table. Arthur watched her stalk out of the room, leaving an uncomfortable silence behind her that engulfed the two still at the table. Uther had reached for his coffee again, and as he took a drink Arthur stared down at his own mug.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I know you were close.” He indicated the paper with a twitch of his index finger. Uther smiled tightly and dipped his head. Then he called for the maid to clear the table and Arthur excused himself.

striving for goodness while the cruel men win by @misonikomi -- this is one of the best fics i've ever read and hands down the best rule 63 fic i've ever read. lewis is so beautifully written

Good News (is on the way) by derryere (Merlin/Arthur)-- possibly the best fic i have ever read. it is incredible. no magic modern au that is so so perfect and has such a like. beautiful ending that is so perfect for the merlin and arthur they wrote
I'll explain everything to the geese by napricot (Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson) -- one of the funniest fics i've ever read. sam gets jealous and so he pretends to have a superpower: talking to birds. and then he ends up actually being able to talk to birds. ridiculous and hilarious and lovely.
By Brave Assent by awkwardsorta (Dele/Eric Dier) -- apologies to my football oomfs but they were It :( rip dele he's not dead he's just playing in the turkish league. tb to the world cup when they were like. ridiculously and unbearably gay every time they were together. dele pulling eric out from the entire team after he scored the winning penalty so he could hug him on his own :( giving eric a shirt so he didn't have to do the postgame interview shirtless and trying to actually dress eric :( no one did it like them
Dying to Return by StormDancer (Merlin/Arthur) -- another merthur fic i'm sorry i love them :( this is so good and lovely :( merlin's cool as fuck in this too

I would love to know what "the weight of dreams" is about
The weight of dreams is a merthur modern!AU football WIP, where Merlin is transferred to Camelot, the football team for which Arthur is the goalkeeper, and works to finds his place both on and off the pitch. It’s meant to be a friends-to-lovers sports fic with a healthy dose of Uther Pendragon’s A+ Parenting, Knights of the Round Table shenanigans, and hurt/comfort thrown in.
I had a brief bit of inspiration to work on it last year, but haven’t really come back to it since. Maybe I will again, but the merthur muse isn’t really speaking to me at the moment. There’s two chapters up on ao3 at the moment in case you’re interested in checking those out though!

Hi! So I've been looking everywhere for this fic, and I don't remember what it was called, but it was a modern as where Arthur and the knights are pro athletes (maybe soccer?) and Merlin works as a security guard in the stadium, and ends up being the guy who guards the locker room for their team. And he first meets Arthur and refuses to let him in because he doesn't have ID? And then romance. It might have been on ao3 but I'm not sure. Does that sound familiar at all? (Love the blog btw)

gwaine & merlin's relationship in this fic is so important to me and arthur as captain i think im gonna be sick and . oh my god who's going to be captain when he's injured. 🧍♀️ also the post-season interview gwaine does ... wow. i love u gwain <3 also i need to rewatch 2x13 cuz balinor and merlin's relationship is super important but idk if i've got it down..... they're my beloveds tho
here's some snippets, most from near the start of the story:
Merlin sits on the bench to grab his boots from the floor. As he does so, the phone next to him vibrates. Arthur’s working on pulling his shirt over his head. Merlin picks up his phone. It’s a text from Uther.
“Got a message,” he tells the striker.
Arthur bangs his head against the edge of his cubby. He finishes tugging his shirt on. “Fucking hell, Merlin!” He snatches the phone from Merlin’s hand. “You can’t just go through a man’s notifications.”
“I didn’t!” Merlin argues. “I didn’t read it or nothing. Don’t worry about it.”
“Of course I’m going to fucking worry,” Arthur snaps. “I’m a world famous footballer and you’re a nobody kitman.” “My mum said I’m a brilliant kitman,” Merlin crosses his arms, “so you piss off.”

Sometimes Merlin wants to grab the captain by the arms and shake him, shake him so hard his brain liquifies and spills out his ears, because what’s the use of the organ if he doesn’t use it, but he’s just the kitman, and he hates football, and he hates Camelot FC, and the sun is too fucking bright and hot and he just wants to go home.
Sports mix begins spilling over the lid of the cup and onto Merlin’s hand. Ranulf slips on a slick patch of grass and the angle his ankle turns looks painful. Merlin curses.

He didn’t think Avalon Park would be so empty just because of the break. Only Lance left, off to play for Argentina, and when his name had been announced with little fanfare from Aredian, Merlin had been surprised to see the rest of the guys cheering, with Arthur leading the midfielder’s chant. He’d been less surprised to see, however, the way Arthur’s expression immediately dropped the second he returned to his locker.
He moved to hand the striker a towel, only for Arthur to ignore him. He huffed, eyes narrowing. “Tough luck,” he said.
“Piss off, Merlin,” was the response. “I’m not in the mood.”
“Ah, but I am.” Merlin nudged him again with the towel. “Come on.”
Arthur finally took the towel, but only to stop Merlin from whacking him with it. “Merlin,” the towel drooped pathetically in his hand, and Merlin felt bad for it, “can you please leave me to dress in peace?”
Merlin sighed. “I can, but I’d rather not.” He took a seat on the bench, looking up at Arthur as he changed out of his kit. “You alright, though?”
That gave Arthur pause, as if he didn’t realise Merlin knew how to be a decent person. Fucking ass. “Is this another form of gloating?” he asked.
“I don’t even play. How could I be gloating?”
Arthur hummed, finally pulling his shirt over his head. “Fair point.”
“So?” Merlin kicks his legs out in front of him. “You okay?”
Arthur runs a hand through his hair, then turns to Merlin and does it again. Merlin raises a brow. Arthur sighs. “I’ll see you outside, Merlin.”

The ride to Cavernfield is tense, quiet in a way Merlin has never, ever heard the team before. It leaves him unsettled, shifting in his seat, fingers drumming on the armrests, foot tapping against the floor. The movements earn him more than a few stern looks from Balinor, but even his steely-eyed glare isn’t enough to dissuade Merlin from keeping up the actions. It’s abnormal, and it’s all wrong, and Merlin doesn’t even know the guys that well, not yet at least, and not enough to be the one to lift their spirits. Furthermore, he knows this is less of a derby and more of a battle in a long fought war between the two clubs, but still . . . the team seems like they’re going to their graves rather than to victory.
Only Gwaine seems unbothered, bobbing his head enthusiastically as he listens to something blasting through oversized headphones, the tinny sound leaking out into the bus and only growing louder when he removes them to fix his hair. Merlin wants to make a comment about it — suggest wearing earbuds if he’s so concerned, but it feels wrong to purposely interrupt this silence, and Merlin feels sure that most would only be irritated with him if he chose to break it.
He watches Gwaine pull out his phone and lift it above his head, fingers going into a ‘v’. Oh. Gwaine is still taking selfies when Merlin turns back around, fingers digging into his arm rests.

The 10 Best Merthur FanFics I Read In October 2019
So here we go. As I made the list I recognized that it´s almost just modern AU. So I juess i just read way more of them that cannon fics this month.
These are in no particular order ;)
So we´ll start with two more popular fics and move on from there:
The Future Soon (by lady_ragnell)
This is a modern AU. Merlin and Arthur see each other in a vision. Curiosity has it: they are married in the future, but loathe each other right now. So they do everything to prevent this marriage from happening. (As if that ever worked in just any story. And so this was in a way predictable but just so freacking enjoyable!) The way they both despice each other in the beginning is just too good. :)
This Silly Ol' Dance Is Perfect for Two (by SlantedKnitting)
Also a modern AU. Arthur is a closeted soccer/football player. He lives in the same apartment building as Merlin. Merlin is out and proud. He loves glitter, clubbing, has a lizard and thinks Arthur is a real jerk. And so one evening Arthur is really drunk and Merlin has to drag him home. And so the story unfolds. Very cute!
A single man in possession of a good fortune (also by SlantedKnitting, because their storries are really good!)
This is also a modern AU. Arthur is the new bisexual leading guy in a dating show. He needs to decide if he chooses the person he personally wants the most, or the person who would please his dad the most. And also lots of dating show stuff. :) This fic also has fanart!
A Beary Happy Story, A Beary Ugly Bear, A Beary Bad Pun and a Beary Happy Family (by platonic_boner)
I read those cute little fics one night I couldn´t sleep at all and it was exactly the right amount of happy fluffyness I needed. Arthur and Merlin gift each other stuffed animals with very shitty names. It´s amazing.
War of Attrition (by DLanaDHZ)
This is a college AU. It´s very new fic, just a month old and it deserves all the love. Merlin and Arthur live in the same dorm and play pranks on each other. Arthur hopes to force Merlin to move out with the pranks and Merlin plays along because why should he not? There is beautiful fanart for this fic.
About Time (by rosewatergold)
This is a canontime AU. Merlin travels back in time to fix a few things. Weighty and Troublesome Things (by Skitz_Phenom) is one of my all time favourites, so I just had to check this out as it sounded simmilar. I loved it! It had of couse it´s own twist and storyline, i just love the “Merlin turns time”-trope :) The twist here is that the timeline bevore wasn´t canon: Merlin and Arthur were husbands, running the kingdom together. Now Merlin lands in a time where there isn´t even a little bit of that at all. Merlin is but a servant. And he doesn´t belive that he derserves Arthur a second time.
A New Low (by Rosie_Rues)
Another modern AU. Merlins a diabetic. He´s stuck in an elevator with Arthur and is currently on a low. He needs some sugar. Or stuff. He doesn´t really know, because then he slips into unconsciousness. it has a very protective Arthur and that is just damn cute.
Crush´d (The Sitterfic) (by orphan_account)
Mondern AU. Merlin is a housekeeper and babysitter for the seven-year old Mordred, Morganas son. Arthur is secretly in love with him and visits his sister way to often. This is an adorable, fluffy story. Morded is the cutest and Merlin is just a bit cuter :) It has pet stores, Diseny films and a very pining Arthur in it. It´s a feel-good story that will sure cheer one up.
The Difference of You (by ingberry)
And the next modern AU. :) Arthur meets Merlin on a bus and is intrigued by him. They meet in the bus from time to time and Arthur grows very fond of the nice stranger. This was very cute, and as I meet my boyfriend also by riding the same bus over and over this story made me very happy.
When morning comes (by Starlingthefool)
This is angsty. Oh my god, but it was perfect. The apocalyse came. Arthur went away to fight against the aliens. And so Merlin waits. And Waits. And Waits. And he doesn´t even knows if Arthur is still alive. This was so beautful and unice. If you are in the mood for something special this is exactly what you need.
Bonus:
Arcane Asylum (by new_kate, read by sophinsiba)
I listened to this as a podfic and it was very well read and written.
In this AU Uther locks all the sorcerers into Arcane Asylum. Arthur gets framed and so Uther has to lock up his own son. Inside the asylum, Merlin takes Arthur under his wings. This has a very dark prison vibe and I loved it very much! It´s a really special story and puts together some normal Merlin tropes with the asylum and a resistance and that makes it very cool!
