Today and Today and Today
The first time Merlin confesses, Arthur takes his sword and drives it straight through his chest. Keyword: first.
Rating: G
Word Count: 1.1k
Full text and author's notes under the cut.
Or, read on AO3.
A/N: I actually did this as a Twitterature-type thing on my private account, so if the formatting isn't what you're used to… um. Sorry for liking writing exercises. Like it's my fault. Also, please pardon any typos. Anyway, on with the fic. :)
...
The first time Merlin confesses, Arthur takes his sword and drives it straight through his chest.
Keyword: first.
-
The second time Merlin confesses, palms up and eyes molten gold, Arthur takes his sword and then doesn't. It falls to the earth, plunges in deeper than before.
The setting is familiar. This is not the second time Merlin's confessed. If Arthur lifted his shirt—nothing.
-
The third time Merlin confesses, Arthur chokes on his words, asks him why. Merlin takes his hands in his, and a dragon made of sparks curls around Arthur's neck.
"Only for you. Always for you."
Arthur can't reach for his sword. The earth is unbroken; Merlin's breath is warm.
-
The fourth time Merlin confesses, Arthur ignores him. He doesn't have time for this.
He has nothing but time.
-
The fifth time Merlin confesses, the words come out different. Arthur should've noticed sooner. Perhaps time is different for sorcerers. Perhaps it's just Merlin.
Arthur tells him to go home. "It's not forever," but the way Merlin looks at him… it's not forever—an oath.
-
The sixth time Merlin confesses, Arthur says, "I know," and Merlin's face crumples like the earth, like his flesh under sharp metal.
Arthur didn't know. Not really. He's only had a couple test runs. There will be more to come, he's sure of it.
-
The seventh time Merlin confesses, it is not in regards to his magic. He doesn't meet Arthur's eyes, and he doesn't reach for him either. There's no confidence in this, and it's not what Arthur's expected either.
This time, Arthur says, "I'm sorry."
Merlin leaves on his own.
-
The eighth time Merlin confesses—actually, Arthur doesn't let him. He's had too many revelations lately, he thinks.
-
The ninth time Merlin confesses, Arthur wonders what's missing. What he's supposed to say.
Merlin's eyes shine, twin suns, and Arthur wonders if this repetition actually has anything to do with him at all.
-
The tenth time Merlin confesses, Arthur says, "Anything else?" It comes out harsher than intended. Merlin doesn't reply.
Arthur thinks about his pride. Thinks about Merlin's. It's not fair; nothing ever is.
-
The eleventh time Merlin confesses, Arthur doesn't ask for anything else, but he does ask about Merlin's past.
"I was born with it."
"I meant in Camelot. You've used it, obviously."
"'Obviously.'"
Arthur marvels at the thought of a true love's kiss.
-
The twelfth time Merlin confesses, Arthur presses his mouth to his manservant's, his friend's, his sorcerer's ("Only for you. Always."), and waits for the rush of wind, the golden glow. He steps back and smiles.
There's something odd in his chest, but he has tomorrow, now.
-
The thirteenth time Merlin confesses, Arthur drops to his knees.
There is no tomorrow.
Merlin follows him. Apologizes, says he only uses it for Arthur, and Arthur… he leans forward, head falling to rest on Merlin's shoulder. He weeps.
-
The fourteenth time Merlin confesses, Arthur once again meets the earth, but it's controlled. He pats the space next to him.
"I just need a minute," he says.
He has already taken so many minutes. Merlin's shoulder presses into his.
-
The fifteenth time Merlin confesses. The fifteenth time, Merlin confesses.
Arthur aches. And he apologizes.
He's not ready yet. He's never been so unready.
-
The sixteenth time Merlin confesses, Arthur says nothing, does nothing.
"Arthur?" Merlin asks. Then, "Sire?"
Arthur leads them back to Camelot. Merlin doesn't ask what's to happen. Arthur wouldn't be able to tell him, anyway.
-
The seventeenth time Merlin confesses, Arthur is too busy staring at a leaf that's landed in his hair. It's honey, a shade darker than Merlin's eyes. Arthur wants to brush it away.
More importantly, Arthur wants to touch Merlin. He takes a step back—Merlin mistakes it for fear.
-
The eighteenth time Merlin confesses, Arthur watches his mouth, full lips and pink tongue. He whispers a spell, and Arthur can feel his breath. He knows what Merlin tastes like.
Does Merlin remember how he tastes?
Arthur watches Merlin's lips curl around his name and swallows.
-
The nineteenth time Merlin confesses, Arthur considers true love's kiss again.
Keyword: considers.
-
The twentieth time Merlin confesses, Arthur stops thinking. He'll make Merlin remember.
-
The twenty-first time Merlin confesses, Arthur says, "I know," then, "I love you," then, "It's always been you. Only you."
Merlin's eyes catch the autumn sun. "Only for you." The words get lost in the wind, but Arthur knows them by heart.
-
The twenty-second time Merlin confesses, Arthur grabs his arms because if he doesn't, he fears he'll collapse on the forest floor for the—he doesn't know.
Arthur doesn't know, and he just wants Merlin back. A king in love is weak. He's baring his throat. It's not enough.
-
The twenty-third time Merlin confesses, Arthur lets him do his tricks, lets him take Arthur's hand, lets him say it's all for him, then, when blue eyes that sometimes aren't blue stare at him, expectant, he says, "I miss you."
He can do it over tomorrow. Today.
-
The twenty-fourth time Merlin confesses, Arthur presses their foreheads together. There is no right answer. There is only today.
Arthur chokes on a thank you. It's not about his pride.
-
The twenty-fifth time Merlin confesses, Arthur confesses too. I just want to see you tomorrow & I thought it would be enough & I can't love you in a way that matters. At least, that's what I think—what I'm afraid of.
Today and today and today. Over and over.
-
The twenty-sixth time Merlin confesses, Arthur tells him the other truths. I stabbed you, at first. Then I took it out on the world. Then I walked away. Then I stayed.
There's still one more truth needed. He doesn't say it, despite the test runs. He doesn't say it.
-
The twenty-seventh time Merlin confesses, Arthur gives him the whole truth. Merlin swears he does the same. Arthur's not sure how much worth swears have anymore. Not in this purgatory.
"I don't need the truth," Arthur decides. "Just you."
The irony being that that's his truth.
-
The twenty-eighth time Merlin confesses, Arthur tests him, not maliciously. Questions about his quests, about his adventures, his magic. He's heard it all, he knows, but it doesn't matter.
When he kisses Merlin, it's for the sake of kissing him. This, he'll never forget.
-
The twenty-ninth time Merlin confesses, Arthur listens, gives his lines, holds Merlin's hands as tight as Merlin holds his.
"There is no one like you," Arthur says.
"There is," Merlin replies.
Arthur inhales Merlin's exhaled, "You."
-
The thirtieth time Merlin confesses, he doesn't.
Arthur stares as Merlin continues on. Yes, the lead-up may have been different, but it's been different before. "You remember?"
"Yesterday?" Merlin grins. "I'll never forget."
Arthur catches up to him, finally. "Neither will I."
...
A/N: Shitty ending is shitty. I know. -_- But this was also the first Merlin (and Merthur) fic I've completed, so I'm content. Enough. I've got another AU on the way, but it's gotten a bit out of hand, so I'm not sure at all when it'll be posted. It'll be a lot longer than this, though! And more descriptive. Yay.
Okay, well, hope y'all enjoyed! If you did, consider reblogging this post and giving it a kudos on AO3, if you want. Good Merthur night. :) <3

From Wikipedia: Flash fiction is a fictional work of extreme brevity that still offers character and plot development. Identified varieties, many of them defined by word count, include the six-word story; the 280-character story (also known as "twitterature"); the "dribble" (also known as the "minisaga," 50 words); the "drabble" (also known as "microfiction," 100 words); "sudden fiction" (750 words); "flash fiction"; and "microstory".
The way I do my flashfic is to take a prompt that inspires me and type until I'm done. Most recent examples are here, here, and here.
Here's one that started as a flashfic but is now on my list of WIPs lol.
I need some fresh prompts to keep my brain limber while I finish my existing WIPS:
28 Days - (epilogue) AU Dean Winchester goes to rehab
Combat Baby - (epilogue) canon-divergent Dean x Jo
If We Make It Through December - (epilogue) post-Chuck, there was no rebar Dean x Donna
Leaving Heaven - (Part Two - 6 chapters) canon divergent/AU S10 with an original female character
Unopened At Your Feet - (1 chap + epilogue) - AU Winchester love triangle
Black Tie Optional - (2 chaps) canon-compliant Dean x Vanessa, follow up to Plus One
Libertine - (4 chaps) Soldier Boy dreaming in containment
Here's my master list so you can take a browse to see if I've already written what you have in mind.
Hit me up with anything you'd like to see me tackle. I may not talk about the fandom, but I still may be inspired by your prompt.
Got any ideas?

Flash fiction is many things: hilariously difficult to categorize; confusingly known as “microfiction,” “short shorts,” “minisagas,” “dribble,” and “drabble”; and sometimes, even dangerous.
But great might not be the first word that springs to mind. Remember, this is a style of writing so short (most cap it at 1,000 words) and so accessible that some have deemed it “Twitterature.” For every half-baked stab at micro-fiction in your Instagram feed, though, there’s a masterful short short story out there that you probably haven’t read yet. The best part? It won’t take more than three minutes to read them.
Here are seven examples of flash fiction (for a total of 21 minutes or less) that are totally worth your time.

do you have any recs for merthur enimes/rivals to lovers first that have good banter? or any any that just have good banter in general? thanks 🧡
1. i hate you, i love you, i hate that i want you by rageynerd (@rageynerd)
Merlin has just about had it with the guy stealing his parking spot every fucking day he comes home from work. Honestly, if he wants covered parking, he can feel free to buy it. But Merlin is not giving up his space so easily-- he writes a strongly worded letter, planning to leave it under the tosser's windshield wiper and call it a day, except when he gets there... the owner has not left his car, and Merlin hates his life because good lord he is hot.
~~~
ok in all fairness not lovers yet but ngl you could probably cut that tension with a knife and i adore the forced proximity trope
2. Still Into You by ashamedbliss
Merlin and Arthur are primetime radio DJs at rival stations. They become very public enemies after a brief Twitter feud; unfortunate, as most of the UK seems to ship them.
~~~
they are so cute and i just afhfadhkgfdk
3. twitterature by cominupforair
Arthur is Camelot FC’s star striker. Merlin is Ealdor FC’s starting goalkeeper. And the whole world thinks they’re rivals, but are they?
aka the Social Media/Football/Wedding AU nobody had asked for
~~~
as you can tell, i might have a thing for twitter banter but anyways cute
Okay Folks! Here are the details for the 31 Days of Flash Fiction fest.
From the 1st of July 2023, 31 prompts will be made available for writing SSHG flash fiction. I will post one here each day for prospective writers and readers to be tempted and inspired by, but the whole list will be available for keen writers from July 1st (It will be linked in the first prompt.)
You can pick and choose which prompts, how many and which length category (there are 4) you wish to write.
You might find just one and focus on a single beautifully crafted 1500 words for the month, or, you might decide to go hardcore and do a drabble a day.
This fest is just for you as a writer. Use this fest to break a rut, start a fresh writing habit or test-drive some scenes or story ideas.
Write your fic and submit it to the 31 Days of Flash Fiction Collection on AO3.
Link: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/31DaysofSSHGFlashFiction/works/new
That's it. No sign-up needed. No prompt claims. No reason to wait.
Choose prompt.
Pick length.
Write story.
Submit.
Post to promote.
So what is Flash Fiction?
Flash fiction, also called minimalist fiction, are brief fictional works that still offer character and plot development.
While various sites and events quote a variety of lengths for flash fiction there are 4 categories our event will focus on.
*Flash fiction: Max 1,500 words.
*Sudden fiction: Max 750 words.
*Drabble, or microfiction: Max 100 words.
*Twitterature: Max 280 characters.
This event is a low-pressure, low-commitment way to give writing a go! I hope you will consider getting involved next month.
Fandom: Obey Me! Character: Diavolo Genre: twitterature, angst Prompt by @boozye!
"No."
The word broke his world into pieces.
Time froze for a split second among the shattered remains of the future he dreamt.
But then it resumed, ruthlessly counting towards the end of your life as you rejected the immortality in Diavolo's extended hand.
One by one, death eaters vanished from the battle. One moment they'd be there; the next, they'd be gone.
Voldemort had forgotten one very important thing. Even the smallest person can change the course of a battle.
Don't underestimate house elves.
twitteratura
Twitteratura (ang. Twitterature, połączenie twitter oraz literature) – krótkie utwory publikowane na portalu społecznościowym Twitter, obejmujące wszelakie gatunki (najczęściej reprezentujące poezję, powieści, opowiadania, aforyzmy), zazwyczaj ograniczone do 140 bądź 280 słów, tj. jednego tweeta, mogą być wieloczęściowe (rozłożone na wiele tweetów), możliwy jest udział paru autorów oraz interaktywna  relacja z odbiorcami.
Pojawiają się także dodatkowe, uzupełniające pojęcia takie jak: twovel, twiction, tweet fic, twiller, phweeting.
Dotychczas ukazało się parę książek ilustrujących kulturę twitteratury:·
E. Rensin, A. Aciman, Twitterature. The World’s Greatest Books in Twenty Tweets Or Less, Penguin Books 2009. ·
S. Hill, Very Short Stories: 300 Bite-Size Works of Fiction, Ulysses Press 2011.·
James, Jefferson Miller, A Small Fiction, Unbound 2018.·
D. Pogue, World According to Twitter, Black Dog & Leventhal 2009. – Jest to książka opierająca się na odpowiedziach obserwatorów Pogue’a na pytania, które zadał. ·
N. Douglas, Twitter Wit. Brilliance in 140 Characters or Less, HarperCollins 2009.
Przykłady:
Adaptacja Makbeta Williama Szekspira:
(…)
Home now. Lady Mackbeth hot over coming power/my nads. She wants to kill Duncan TONIGHT. Can’t tell if she’s serious or just into dirty-talk.
------
She was serious. Women, LOL.
------
(…)
My enemies and their families keep dying randomly! This is beginning to get out of hand. Nah, my wife is definitely right about this.
------
Maybe not. Wife is having mid-life crisis or woman troubles. Bitch is nuts.
