I was reading a merthur fic (this one) today and..
In the fic Merlin tells Arthur that he has magic, and Arthur asks why has Merlin never told him and then.. this..
"Just because Arthur could trust Merlin with his life didn't mean Merlin could do the same."
"JUST BECAUSE ARTHUR COULD TRUST MERLIN WITH HIS LIFE DIDN'T MEAN MERLIN COULD DO THE SAME."
This.. is the most devastating line I have ever read in a Merthur fic, ever..

Arthur travels back in time to save Merlin (from becoming a tree) AU

The king of Camelot goes to visit his magic tree before his next battle. This isn't new. He always visits it. But it will be the last time he does it.
Arthur: (caressing the bark of the tree with a hand)It's finally time. I'm sorry it took so long. (sighs) And I'm sorry I have to do this.
He knows he's being selfish. Camelot is better than ever, his people is happy and yet he's going to war, risking this era of peace. A war he knows he won't come back from. But it's necessary.
Gwen: (arriving) Arthur...
Arthur: I won't change my mind, Guinivere
Gwen: I know. I just want to understand. Arthur, why? The price is too high and the chance it might work too slim. And even if it does work, you are risking that everything you know, everything you built will never happen.
Arthur: It's a risk I'm willing to take. I can prevent so many things from happening, not only Merlin's fate, but Gawain's, Elyan's, Lancelot's-
Gwen: Don't pretend you're not doing this just for him, Arthur, I'm not a fool.
Arthur: ...
Gwen: He wouldn't want you to do this. And you know it.
Arthur: Yeah, well, he didn't care about what I wanted when he made that stupid deal.
It's been ten years since Merlin saved his life and was cursed to be a tree forever as a payback. He was now a majestic beautiful tree in the royal garden and the most valuable national treasure in Camelot due to its magical properties: It could give fruits with the ability to cure all ills and the most serious wounds, but also could give ones with the most letal poison. Its wood was the finest. Once it let some branches fall for its king before an important battle and the weapons that were made with them are still as good as new to this day. Though Arthur did his part, he knows Camelot probably would not have obtained the title of the greatest, richest and most prosperous kingdom if it weren't for his Merlin.
However, not everything was sunshine and rainbows. Like every treasure it was also coveted by everyone who wanted to use it for their own selfish purposes. Kingdoms envious of his power sent spies to try to steal its fruits, its branches and even to try to cut it down to leave Camelot defenseless. Others even tried to invade Camelot just to posses the magic tree, but Camelot's army was the strongest in all Albion so they never could and soon they stopped trying.
There was a time they almost got too close though. Once Arthur found a man holding an ax stuck deep in Merlin's trunk. He has gone so mad with fury, he almost beat the man to death if it weren't because his knights stopped him before he made the final blow. He was still livid after that, but he let Gwen handle the man's trial, because he knew he wouldn't be reasonable in the state he was in. In the end the man was sentenced to beheading. It was what the law decreed since touching the King's tree was by law an act of treason. The king who sent the spy had to make a public apology and give monetary compensation to avoid a war. Arthur did make sure the spy's head was cut of with his own ax though. Later, when he was alone with his tree, Arthur cried because he almost lost Merlin again. The king apologised to him over and over again between sobs and cried until he fell asleep at the tree's roots.
It was then when it hit him. One day he would die and there won't be anyone to protect Merlin from greedy people who will only use his power for their own gains. Merlin would be at his new owner's mercy and the one after that, and the one after that, forever without being able to do anything about it. The mere thought made Arthur sick to his stomach.
No, he won't allow that to happen.
Gwen: (with teary eyes) Aren't we happy?
Arthur: Don't say that. You have always made me happy.
Gwen: (laughs weakely) But he made you happier, didn't he?
Arthur: ...
Gwen: You never told me. Which were Merlin's last words.
Arthur: I love you... he said I love you.
Gwen: Oh... (smiles) I get it now. Alright I'll help you. Just promise me something.
Arthur: Anything.
Gwen: Don't feel bad if you can't prevent other people from dying. In fact, you don't have to do it. Just save Merlin.
Arthur: But-
Gwen: No, you have done so much for this kingdom and sacrifice so much. (cradling his face) You owe us nothing and you owe me nothing, alright? Just be happy.
They hugged each other tightly and they share their last kiss and I love you before Arthur finally went to bloodiest battle he'll ever had in his life. And, after killing 100 hundred enemy soldiers with his blade, the king of Camelot died at the early age of forty.
Later Percival and Leon retrieve the king's corpse and bring it before their queen who doesn't share a tear despite being broken inside. She orders for his late husband to be buried next to his tree instead of burned in a pyre, proclaming that's what the king would have wanted. The real reason however is more complex than that.
The night after the funeral, she secretly brings the druids her husband consorted for years to the royal garden for the ritual to be made. Before the tree, as was planned, is the Ancient Round Table of the Ancient Kings.
Druid1: A sword with the blood of 300 hundred man.
Gwen: (gives excalibur to him)
Druid2: Three dragon scales.
Percival: (gives them to her)
Druid3: And the corpse of a king. We have everything.
Leon: Will this really work?
Druid1: This ritual had only worked once in the times of the ancient kings and only because it was done by three of the most powerful sorcerers of that time. We are not that powerful.
Druid2: However, we have a great magic source (she points the tree). So it might work.
It worked! That's Arthur's first thought when he opens his eyes again and finds himself in his room 20 years younger.

HIII!! First of all I want to thank you all for giving the first post so much love! I was truly shocked because I didn't think the AU was that good, so I'm really glad you liked it. I hope this kind of sequel/prequel? was of your liking too.
I don't think I'm going to make this a full fic yet, but I can make snippets like this about this AU until then.

Merlin girlies please help me I’m looking for Merthur fics!!
I want something that:
• retains their original dynamic (throughout the whole fic, even after they become romantic)
• is slowburn, possibly maybe feelings realization (and when I say slow I mean SLOW)
• doesn’t have weird cringe self-insert ocs
• has them act in-character (this includes the side characters! everyone in character)
is funny with fun banter between Merlin and Arthur

Merthur fic recs!
Since I’ve been seeing a lot of people asking for recommendations, here’s my bookmarks, the crème de la crème if you will. They are also ranked (if that’s even possible. it’s probably not but i’ll try anyway).
1. Folklore by ironfamjam
Warnings: Angst
Chapters: 1/1 (completed)
Words: 6,708
Summary: Sometimes, a single kiss can change the trajectory of a kingdom entire. Or, a magic reveal within the tunnels as Morgana takes over Camelot above and Arthur rebuilds his entire heart and world below.
Thoughts: an alternate take on the Season 4 finale that changed me as a person. I absolutely love this fic, it reads like a modern epic. The romance is gorgeous, I could not recommend it more.
2. Queercoding by astudyintheburningofhearts
Warnings: implied sexual content
Chapters: 1/1 (completed)
Words: 2,933
Summary: For as long as Arthur and Merlin had been Arthur and Merlin, nobody had really been able to understand the two of them. Not their relationship, not their loyalty, and especially not the way they conversed with one another. One could always just slap on the label of unconventional best friends and leave it at that, it would most certainly explain their instinctive need to die for one another, sure. But there was not one person that traversed the paths of Camelot that could explain the inherent dynamics of their conversations.
Thoughts: Short, but oh so sweet. Beautifully written, it made me die of cuteness and roll on the floor. The intimacy of having a language only you and your lover understand <3 (Also inspired by one of my own prompts, which I still can’t believe!!)
3. tennessee whiskey by kosmikowboj
Warnings: some gun violence and alcohol use
Chapters: 3/3 (completed)
Words: 13,393
Summary: Merlin has been all over the West as a bounty hunter, and never has he stuck around in one place for longer than it takes to finish a job. Goldbluff wasn’t supposed to be any different, but for some reason he can’t parse—one that has absolutely nothing to do with the sheriff’s irritating son, thank you very much—Merlin keeps finding excuses to stay. In his defense, a man hired to hunt down himself is bound to go a little mad.
Thoughts: I hit the CEILING when i saw this one. If you’re a fan of Westerns, this is definitely the fic for you. It is cute, it fluffy, it is enemies to lovers excellence. There’s so much lovely tension. Highly recommend.
4. the wish that broke the world by whatswiththemustache
Warnings: Angst, Eventual Hurt/Eventual Comfort, Arthur goes through it
Chapters: 9/30 (still updating)
Words: 53,699 - so far
Summary: In which Arthur discovers Merlin's magic and exiles him in an unthinking rage - but not before making a wish that he'll come to regret. The next day, with no memory of what happened, Arthur wakes up to a Camelot that is not his own. Everything is different, everyone seems terrified of him, and worst of all... Merlin has vanished without a trace, as if he never existed in the first place.
Thoughts: while I hate watching Arthur suffer, the prose is beautiful and the story is very very intriguing. Also writes Arthur’s POV so accurately.
5. Sorcerer's Bane by BeautifulFiction
Warnings: Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Hurt Merlin
Chapters: 66/66 (completed)
Words: 264,623
Summary: Arthur gave Merlin his cloak thinking only of the warmth it would offer in a snowstorm. He never thought his manservant may be mistaken for him and snatched by bandits. Nor did he expect his dashing rescue of Merlin to turn his world so utterly on his head.
Because the bandits hadn't kidnapped a prince. They'd snatched a sorcerer, and now captivity is the least of anyone's problems.
A golden age awaits, but can they claim it together, or are they doomed to fail?
Thoughts: another fic that I just started but am already intrigued! Amazingly written, and highly recommend by fic connoisseurs over the years!
6. Stolen Kisses, Borrowed Time by sexy_sorcerer_sapphic
Warnings: Sexual References but nothing explicit
Chapters: 1/1 (completed)
Words: 5,229
Summary: "It was the risk of it that made it so thrilling – the sweetness of suspense. Any moment now, he would be found out. His secrets and lies would come dripping from his greedy mouth and he would be forced to face the consequences. But for now, he wanted to devour Arthur for all he was worth, gorge himself while he had the chance."
Merlin has resigned himself to admiring Arthur from a distance; there were far too many boundaries between them to ever attempt to tear down. But Arthur is determined and Merlin's defences are crumbling.
Thoughts: another super cute fic that my sister recommended. It was such an enjoyable read!
7. Sunrise in Ealdor, Sunset in Camelot by mobycotton
Warnings: none, except some alcohol use
Chapters: 18/18 (completed)
Words: 94,604
Summary: Merlin takes 3 days off work to deliver medicine to a distant village, and when he doesn’t return when he is supposed to Arthur gets worried. He finds Merlin in Ealdor, sick and bed-ridden, and refuses to return to Camelot until he is better. Cue a protective Arthur who won’t leave Merlin out of his sight even after they return to Camelot, which makes for a very awkward sleeping situation.
Anything to make sure Merlin is safe, right?
Thoughts: While I haven’t read all of it, the bit I have read was extremely adorable and genuinely lives in my head rent-free. Beautifully written!
8. At Arm's Length by sirencalls
Warnings: none
Chapters: 1/1 (completed)
Words: 9,142
Summary: “I’m sorry, there must be a mistake.” Uther furrows his brows. “That is my son’s manservant.”
“This is Emrys, the most powerful sorcerer who will ever walk the earth. It is our deepest honor to be able to offer his hand to your son.”
“Merlin?” Arthur asks, looking across the hall. Merlin looks the palest and the smallest Arthur has ever seen him. He looks like a scared animal that knows it’s about to be trapped, and that’s when it clicks for Arthur that no part of this is a joke. None of it. “Merlin, what are they talking about?”
Thoughts: this one was very cute and I absolutely loved being able to read about Merlin getting to wear fancy clothes and being regal :3 almost won me over to the arranged marriage trope!
9. Circumlocution by undermycoat
Warnings: Smut
Chapters: 1/1 (completed)
Words: 5,875
Summary: Merlin pushed himself up from the chaise and said, “I’ll go find something else to read.” He pressed his hands into his lower back, and Arthur focussed on that, those slender fingers pressed into soft, blue fabric, rather than the arch his back made when he stretched, or how the action resulted in Merlin sticking his arse out, the sweet curve much too close to Arthur.
Merlin turned around. “Any suggestions?”
Arthur shook his head, so Merlin turned back around and went searching.
When he returned, the book held between his fingers was narrow, Arthur having to squint to make out the words on the spine.
“Poetry,” he said dully after reading.
“Yes,” Merlin replied, certain.
Thoughts: While I usually avoid reading smut fics, I decided to give this one a shot because who can turn down a library sex fic? I was not disappointed. It was very well done 👌🏻

In which Arthur befriends a sorcerer hiding in the forests while hiding his identity as the Prince. As they navigate their budding relationship, the two explore what it means to be good and what it means to be loved.
My addition: It was so cute! Seeing Arthur come around to magic especially in such a short period of time was so fun to watch. Also, it changed the dynamics very interestingly in which Arthur never registered as a prince to Merlin, and was, this time, the one keeping secrets.
The characters are well written and so fun to watch dance around each other as always, even in a completely different *shrugs* everything.
