Beginning in 1980, I think my interest in comics begins to wane. Oh, it's always a finicky interest. But I can usually read anything from the 60s and half the things from the 70s. But by 1980, there's just not that much that I'd want to read anymore. Let's give some examples:
• The Avengers stop being good around Issue #200, when Ms. Marvel has her character ruined. Also around this time they make Hank Pym a domestic abuser and (seemingly) try to ruin his character, which I really, really hate.
• Thor ditches Don Blake to introduce Beta Ray Bill, I've heard. And I hate that too. I love Don Blake as a concept, and I'm outraged they'd ditch it.
• Marvel killed off almost all their vampires for a while. And I really hate that too.
• Captain Marvel dies permanently. I don't even love Captain Marvel that much, but I hate that they'd do that to me.
I can keep going, but then I'd be here all night. So let's end it here. Maybe if I think of more things, I'll create a part 2 to this.

since I'm paying more attention to drac daily stuff this year I'm seeing a lot of posts saying "scholars always get the book wrong" and guys, ya gotta read better scholarship. poke around on jstor and google scholar for publications from the last ~15 years. see if you can find queer / feminist / postcolonial centered journals with online public archives. find a writer you agree with and see who else they cite. I prommy that academics are not your enemy and a lot of them are in their line of work precisely because they're just as not normal about their blorbos as you are. hashtag don't turn this into another "historians will say they're just friends."

Motherfucker, Re: Dracula managed to smack me in the face by putting the “letter, unopened by her” after Mina had already finished speaking. That hurts so much worse!!!

Of Marvel's three biggest horror books in the 70s (Tomb of Dracula, Man-Thing and Werewolf by Night) Man-Thing is definitely my favorite. Man-Thing just doesn't scare me very much, which is funny because I'm really easily scared. But honestly he's very charming.
Meanwhile, my least favorite is Tomb of Dracula. Dracula is (as far as I'm aware) portrayed as a villian. Which I guess makes sense, but I also don't love it. And I hate all the monster hunters more. Blade can drown in a lake, for all I care. So I just really don't love the dracula stories, just based on their descriptions. Maybe if I ever read them one day I'll change my mind, but who knows?
Meanwhile, Werewolf by Night is dead in the middle. It seems good (I like it when the monsters are sympathetic and not fully depicted as evil), but I've never read it before. But at least it's not all about monster hunters like Dracula seems to be, so that automatically makes it better.

genuinely it ticks me off so bad when people say that hot vampires are a modern contrivance. no you fool. you cretin. you fake vampire fan. read carmilla. read the vampyre. read the giaour. actually maybe don't read the giaour on account of all the unchecked orientalism. arguably, read christabel. read varney the vampire and then give up almost immediately when you realize it's over 650k words. also remember that dracula is not the only vampire in dracula. I fight for sexy vampire rights every day of my life.
