Deadly consequences… What happens next is entirely everyone else’s fault.
Nominee: Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him. So it’s a relief when his skill on the basketball court earns him a scholarship to college, far away from his childhood home. He soon meets Julia Padavano, a spirited and ambitious young woman who surprises William with her appreciation of his quiet steadiness. With Julia comes her family; she is inseparable from her three younger sisters: Sylvie, the dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book and imagines a future different from the expected path of wife and mother; Cecelia, the family’s artist; and Emeline, who patiently takes care of all of them. Happily, the Padavanos fold Julia’s new boyfriend into their loving, chaotic household.
But then darkness from William’s past surfaces, jeopardizing not only Julia’s carefully orchestrated plans for their future, but the sisters’ unshakeable loyalty to one another. The result is a catastrophic family rift that changes their lives for generations. Will the loyalty that once rooted them be strong enough to draw them back together when it matters most?
Nominee: The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer
Make a wish...
Lucy Hart knows better than anyone what it’s like to grow up without parents who loved her. In a childhood marked by neglect and loneliness, Lucy found her solace in books, namely the Clock Island series by Jack Masterson. Now a twenty-six-year-old teacher’s aide, she is able to share her love of reading with bright, young students, especially seven-year-old Christopher Lamb, who was left orphaned after the tragic death of his parents. Lucy would give anything to adopt Christopher, but even the idea of becoming a family seems like an impossible dream without proper funds and stability.
But be careful what you wish for...
Just when Lucy is about to give up, Jack Masterson announces he’s finally written a new book. Even better, he’s holding a contest at his home on the real Clock Island, and Lucy is one of the four lucky contestants chosen to compete to win the one and only copy.
For Lucy, the chance of winning the most sought-after book in the world means everything to her and Christopher. But first she must contend with ruthless book collectors, wily opponents, and the distractingly handsome (and grumpy) Hugo Reese, the illustrator of the Clock Island books. Meanwhile, Jack “the Mastermind” Masterson is plotting the ultimate twist ending that could change all their lives forever.
... You might just get it.
Nominee: Tom Lake by Ann Patchett
It's spring and Lara's three grown daughters have returned to the family orchard. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the one story they've always longed to hear – of the film star with whom she shared a stage, and a romance, years before.
Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart.

Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if that were true.

Reread - Rewrite - Burn Book Tag
I'm stealing this tag from @the-owleryreader because it looked super fun! To quote her:
The rules are pretty simple: pick three books and, in the style of ‘Snog, Marry, Avoid’ (or any other less-PG13 versions you’ve come across) you pick which of the three books you would reread, rewrite, or just throw in a fire. You can do as many or as few rounds as you like; I’ve settled on five. I used my Goodreads ‘Read’ shelf with sorting set to random and just went with the top three books each time I refreshed.
Round 1
The Skylark's Song (The Skylark Saga #1) - J. M. Frey
Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture - Ed. by Roxanne Gay
Looking for Alaska - John Green
I burn Looking for Alaska with little to no thought; I hated it. The other two books are more difficult because I liked them both, but I choose to rewrite Not That Bad because some essays were not for me, and I reread The Skylark's Song.
Round 2
The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet - Bernie Su & Kate Rorick
The Miniaturist - Jessie Burton
Paranormal - Kierstin White
Easy! I burn Paranormal, which I don't even remember; I rewrite The Miniaturist, which was fantastic but not 5 stars; and I rereas The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet, which I love and adore.
Round 3
Maus - Art Spiegelman
Norse Mythology - Neil Gaiman
Six Characters in Search of an Author - Luigi Pirandello
I burn Six Characters in Search of an Author, which left me cold; I rewrite Norse Mythology, which had good ideas but less good execution; and I reread Maus, which was top notch.
Round 4
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows
Uprooted - Naomi Novik
Drowning Instinct - Ilsa J. Bick
I, um, I don't really remember Drowning Instinct other that it was super anxiety-inducing, so I burn it; I rewrite Uprooted, which was only "okay" for me; and I reread The Guernsey one.
Round 5
A Little Book of Language - David Crystal
Chronicle of a Death Foretold - Gabriel García Márquez
Life on the Refrigerator Door - Alice Kuipers
I burn Chronicle of a Death Foretold, which I hated with a burning passion (SO MUCH FRUSTRATION); I rewrite A Little Book of Language, which was okay but too basic for me; and I reread Life on the Refrigerator Door, which I loved.
I won't tag anyone, but feel free to do this and tag me in your rounds 😊

Personal Narrative
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows follows the story of Juliet Ashton, a spunky British author who lacks inspiration but desires to write an insightful novel after her success with World War II satire. In addition to her writing dilemma, she is unable to decide whether or not she should marry Mark Reynolds, a rich American. One day, she receives a letter from a man named Dawsey Adams, a native islander of Guernsey, who asks her if she can help him find more books for the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. She agrees to send him more books, but only if he continues to correspond with her. She inquires about life on the island, especially the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Dawsey connects her to more members of the literary society to help her gain a more varied perspective. Through the exchange of many letters, Juliet is given a glimpse into the life of the inhabitants of Guernsey and the way the endured the German Occupation. Juliet decides to visit her friends after many months which allows their relationships to flourish. Her friends become the family she never had and she begins to believe there is no need to return to London. After meeting Dawsey, Juliet recognizes how shallow Mark Reynolds truly is and realizes how vapid their marriage would be. She rejects her overbearing suitor and marries Dawsey instead. The novel ends with Juliet deciding to base her novel on Elizabeth Mckenna, the founder of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Guernsey’s local hero.

Books I Read in 2019
#147 - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Burrows
Virtual Mount TBR (45/48)
PopSugar Reading Challenge -- A book published posthumously
Rating: 2/5 stars
I started out thinking this book was okay, and liked it progressively less and less as it went on. I don't think this story works as an epistolary novel, or at least, it needs more attention and care to make it work. The letter writers throughout are wildly different people with wildly different backgrounds and educations, and there's a sameness of tone to the entire book that diminishes the variety of character voice. I do think in the first half, Juliet, Sidney, and Dawsey sound distinct, but most of the rest of the Islanders are basically the same, made to sound backwards with a few dashes of poor grammar, and in the second half everyone becomes a muddle. The second problem with the structure is that it made it absurdly easy to skip sections that didn't interest me as I grew less enchanted with the story, because if the letter was to or from Juliet or Dawsey, I mostly stopped caring. I did skim some of the later letters, and I feel like I have a decent handle on the plot without reading every detail of Isola's sudden obsession with phrenology or the ridiculously late and short subplot about Sidney's secretary trying to steal Oscar Wilde's letters. Even once I strip the plot down to its core, there are things I didn't like. The main love triangle was completely without tension, because of course Juliet is going to come to her senses and not marry Mark, he's an ass. Trying to infuse extra tension by creating a second, weaker love triangle around Dawsey was just stupid, it was killing time so that Juliet still had an obstacle after she realized her feelings for Dawsey, and I didn't buy it for a second. I do have a thing for the strong, silent type of hero, so I found Dawsey appealing as an archetype but rather lackluster as an actual character. He seems so vibrant in the first half of the book when we get to read his correspondence, but as soon as he's in the same zip code, so to speak, as Juliet, we barely see his POV again and he becomes a footnote in everyone else's letters, which is nuts, since he's the romantic hero. He doesn't end up with enough actual page time to properly display his affection for Juliet, so their love story is a rushed but foregone conclusion that the book expects me to be happy about simply because it happens, but not because it did the work making it happen. I felt I was expected to fill in far too many of the blanks myself. I have not seen the movie yet, but despite my disappointment with the novel, I do still plan on watching it, because a) I'm interested to see how an epistolary novel like this gets adapted, and b) I think if done well, a movie version would solve a lot of the issues I have with the novel's structure. I haven't looked into any reviews or discussions of the movie, so I have no idea if general consensus on it is good or terrible, but I can probably spare two hours to find out myself.

Danielle Babbles About Books - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
Rating: 5/5 stars
Review: *Spoilers* I love this book so much. Epistolary writing style is just awesome in the first place. It’s a great way to do multiple POVs without confusing the audience when you switch narrators, provides an intimate understanding of the characters while also kind of keeping space since you’re learning about characters as they present themselves to others. But I digress, there are so many things I loved about this book. I loved that Juliet is over thirty when most romance stories I’ve read involve characters in their teens to twenties, especially in a society where we women are taught from early childhood once you pass 29 you’re basically dead. I loved how the plot unfolded slowly with each additional letter and there were so many fantastic subplots - I really missed the Oscar Wilde subplot in the movie. And the setting of Guernsey was beautiful. I’ve kind of always wanted to run away to an island but we’ll leave my isolationist/escapist fantasies alone. I especially loved Isola’s misinterpretation/misdirection at the end. Juliet proposing to Dawsey was also just 😍💯👌 perfect. That’s exactly how I’d do it if I was ever actually in a relationship because what, pray tell, is the point of waiting around forever so the man can figure things out and pop the question. Be direct and honest.
