Wait so Anakin is racing and getting incredibly frustrated because he can’t seem to find that extra speed today, and his engineer is trying his damn best to talk him through those corners where he could save some time but he’s just not getting through to him. But Obi-Wan knows Anakin. Knows what makes him tick. So he comes in on the radio, the posh condescending tone you mentioned, and his voice cuts through Anakin and suddenly he’s setting personal bests and then even fastest laps. Even through the radio, he feels Obi-Wan’s gaze on him and he needs to hear the pleased “well done, Anakin” at the end of the race if it kills him.
it's honestly one of the things that brought me to the sport, the fact that you have these incredibly aggressive, fearless, competitive men, racing these obscenely fast and dangerous cars, totally in control of driving their car and yet they're guided by the voice in their ear. they're both active and passive at the same time, and they have to be both impetuous and totally obedient, it's an incredible dynamic.
christian horner has frequently compared racing drivers to horses that need to be broken, you know? it's like his favorite metaphor lmao and it works so well to imagine anakin as this incredibly high-strung, aggressive driver, who thinks he knows best and tries to dictate his own strategy, but immediately falls into compliance when obi-wan's admonishing voice hits his ears. it's not just calling a dog to heel in this au, but riding and guiding a horse with a bridle. it's just………. whew.
anakin trusts obi-wan implicitly, more than his team, more than anyone, and would immediately bend to his commands, feeling a thrill down his spine when he sounds angry or proud on the radio. i totally believe he'd do anything, try anything, to get that "well done." he wants to spray obi-wan with champagne and laugh as the music plays, he wants obi-wan to grab his shoulder and squeeze, or hug him so tight that he picks him up after a close race...
