Queen Elizabeth II has died

Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’ s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death on 8 September 2022.

Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the second longest recorded of any monarch of a sovereign country.

Elizabeth was born in Mayfair, London, as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Her father acceded to the throne in 1936 upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, making Elizabeth the heir presumptive.

She was educated privately at home and began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In November 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, and their marriage lasted 73 years until his death in April 2021. They had four children together: Charles III; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

When her father died in February 1952, Elizabeth—then 25 years old—became queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (known today as Sri Lanka), as well as Head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth reigned as a constitutional monarch through major political changes such as the Troubles in Northern Ireland, devolution in the United Kingdom, the decolonization of Africa, and the United Kingdom's accession to the European Communities and withdrawal from the European Union.

The number of her realms varied over time as territories have gained independence and some realms have become republics. Her many historic visits and meetings include state visits to China in 1986, Russia in 1994, the Republic of Ireland in 2011, and visits to or from five popes.

Significant events include Elizabeth's coronation in 1953 and the celebrations of her Silver, Golden, Diamond, and Platinum Jubilees in 1977, 2002, 2012, and 2022, respectively.

Elizabeth was the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, the oldest and longest-serving incumbent head of state, and the second-longest verifiable reigning sovereign monarch in world history, only behind Louis XIV of France.

She faced occasional republican sentiment and media criticism of her family, particularly after the breakdowns of her children's marriages, her annus horribilis in 1992, and the death of her former daughter-in-law Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997.

However, support for the monarchy in the United Kingdom remained consistently high, as did her personal popularity. Elizabeth died on 8 September 2022 at Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire.

Oval — Romantiq (Thrill Jockey)

Markus Popp’s Oval project has been active since the early 1990s, but the pivotally important electronic artist still finds new reasons for inspiration. Romantiq, his latest recording, began as an audio-visual collaboration with artist Robert Seidel for the grand opening of the German Romantic Museum in Frankfurt. Refracted through a postmodern lens, Romantiq ponders the ideals of eighteenth and nineteenth century art. Even without the visual element, the adaption of the work into an album creates a compelling document.

Romantic blends digital electronica and organic elements. “Zauberwort” includes a distressed sample, collected by Seidel, of an opera singer performing an aria from The Magic Flute (hence the title). Alongside it are electric guitar, trombone, and diaphanous synthesizers. “Cresta” consists of overlapping chimes, keyboards, and whorling synths, which occasionally move through the middle of phrases. As frequently happens on Romantiq, Popp sets up a harmonic ground that is more or less constant. These patternings are seldom symmetrical and never simple, composed of unconventional chord progressions placed in syncopated time frames.

“Rytmy” is a standout. It recalls the post-minimalism of John Adams, chugging along in breakneck ostinatos. “Wildwasser” sets up another repeating pattern, through which multiple melodies flit, some deliberately naive in their patches to recall earlier technology. As one might expect from the title, “Glockenton” plays with pitched percussion in overlaid swaths of various timbres.

“Amethyst” combines a chromatic chord progression with harp-like arpeggiations and a repeated note riff. Partway through, a downtempo beat appears, submerged beneath the other textures. “Elektrin” plays with polyrhythms of glassine and string sounds, with whistling glissandos giving the piece vintage sci-fi adornments. In one of the more adventurous cuts, “Okno” combines pitched percussion and glissando-filled synth harmonies to create a curious, dissonant palette. Eventually, repeated thwacks of a bell take center stage with a shipboard vibe, as the synth part devolves still further. Pitched percussion is taken even further on “Touha,” where polymeter and super-fast flurries are foregrounded. Just a whiff of synth strings provides harmonic context.

The recording closes with “Lyriq,” where an intricate rhythmic sequence led by mbira-like sounds leads the charge, while solo synth interjections serve as an angular counterweight. At the very end, both textures unwind in a brief coda. Romantiq is a strong addition to Popp’s compendious catalog, one that unifies certain sound selections and approaches while providing ample variety. Wish I’d been in Frankfurt.

Astrid rolled her eyes, grateful that Adam wasn’t around or else something in the Facility’s break room would have more than likely been dented. “I’ll keep that in mind, but not quite what I was asking. It’s more of an etiquette question.”

“Aw, damn. Okay, hit me. I might not have the right answer, but let me see what I’m working with.”

“On a scale of one to ten, how rude would it be if I went to my best friend’s new wife - apparently there’s a thing with accidental marriages with packs that my pal got himself tangled up in one, which is that really a thing? - and told her that human or not, you hurt my guy and I rip your head off your body and kick it like a field goal into the nearest dumpster?”

The chair Tane had been leaning back on teetered back on four legs with an audible thump. “Babe, that is a loaded question. One, I thought I was your werewolf best friend.”

She held up a hand. “To be fair, Markus has been my best friend longer than I knew werewolves actually existed. He gets seniority best friend status.”

“And two, could you really do that to this lady? Because if so,” he winked at her. “That’s kinda hot.”

“Are you gonna answer this or not? I don’t want to do it because I don’t think she knows about it yet, but I will call his sister instead.”

“Give me a minute, I’m still trying to wrap my head around all of this.” Astrid watched while it looked as if the gears were turning in her friend’s head. “Markus. Sounds German. His last name happen to be Fisher by any chance? Tons of siblings, all of them giants, sister in question this gorgeous looking woman who could crush watermelons with her thighs?”

“Yeah, you know them?”

Tane grinned. “When you do tell Agent Fisher about the absolute mess her big brother got himself in, because yeah, these kinds of things rarely happen and when they do, it’s a gigantic cluster of epic proportions, tell me before you do.”

“You want to see her reaction.” Astrid deadpanned.

“I will make popcorn.”

Meghan claims she knew her attendance at the wedding would bring out the paparazzi and after discussing it with Patrick, decided to stay home to give them privacy. Rumors begin of a falling out between Meghan and the Suits cast over her behavior (e.g., entitlement and demands for special treatment) since dating Harry. Rumors that Meghan had an affair with one of her Suits castmates also resurface.

12/17/2016: The Markles sell photos of Meghan's childhood.

12/20/2016: Daily Mail writes about Meghan's topless photos and one of the first Kate hitjobs is published, an article that says Meghan has a better fashion style than Kate and that Kate should take inspiration from her.

12/21/2016: Daily Mail writes about Meghan's racy Suits scenes and an article claiming Meghan has been harassed and attacked by her half-sister is published, beginning Meghan's victim narrative. The Samantha article leads to speculation that Meghan dragged these issues up and into the public to bury her topless photos and sexy scenes. Later, it is also speculated that "Everyone Loves Classy" is meant to repair Meghan's reputation to make her royal appropriate.

12/27/2016: Yoga pap walk with Doria.

12/30/2016: A "Meghan is just like Diana" article is published, talking about Meghan's humanitarian work in and interest in Africa.

1/4/2017: Tom Markle Jr. confirms that Harry has met Thomas Markle "about six months ago" and that Thomas has known about the relationship since the very beginning.

1/6/2017: Another Kate hit job is published, stating that the Duchess will have to deal with being compared to Meghan, whose philanthropy is far more successful.

1/7/2017: Meghan leaks that she will be attending Skippy's wedding with Harry.

1/10/2017: The Daily Mail publishes photographs and stories about Meghan's first wedding to Trevor.

1/11/2017: Meghan spreads engagement rumors to E News! It's later confirmed that E News is one of Meghan's go-tos to leak info about the royals and her relationship so there's a solid confidence that she's trying to push Harry's hand.

1/14/2017: Meghan leaks to the Daily Mail that Harry plans to take her skiing in Verbier and her brother, Tom Markle Jr., has been arrested.

1/17/2017 - 1/18/2017: More information and details about Tom Jr.'s arrest are published.

1/20/2017: Kensington Palace announces that William and Kate are moving back to London in the fall when William's contract with EAAA ends in the summer.

1/22/2017: Meghan is papped at the airport in Mumbai, preparing to go home after 5 days in India for World Vision. There is some speculation that Meghan was a last-minute addition to the India program to get some good PR following her brother's drama but it's quickly debunked when a) veteran blogs point out that Meghan's strategy to bury bad news/criticism is a pap walk or a royal connection, not going off the radar and b) her November interview with Vancouver Star plugging the India trip is rediscovered.

1/27/2017: Meghan spreads rumors that they're really engaged now and Harry proposed over a glass of champagne.

1/28/2017: Kensington Palace announces that William and Harry have commissioned a statue of Diana for the KP gardens.

1/31/2017: Meghan tips off the Daily Mail about an article she wrote for The Tig about her dream bachelorette party. Rumors begin that this is Meghan announcing her availability to sponsors for merching opportunities in the UK when she marries Harry.

2/22/2017: A Cambridge hit job is published, pointing out that they don't hold hands and aren't affectionate in public.

2/25/2017: Meghan tries to convince us that she's firmly established in the UK with a group of society girls who've become close friends.

2/26/2017: Toronto pap walk to merch an elephant bracelet

2/28/2017: The Daily Mail publishes that Meghan has never met a freebie she didn't turn down.

3/5/2017: Meghan merches Cartier.

3/12/2017: Meghan leaks that Pippa doesn't want her at the wedding and has banned her with a "no ring, no bring" rule.

3/13/2017: The Daily Mail publishes a story and photographs of Meghan's very special episode of 90210. It's later that that Meghan leaked about William's dad dancing in Switzerland to bury this but more likely, it's Meghan's leaks that she will meet The Queen soon that are meant to bury the 90210 work.

3/20/2017: "Meghan is still the same girl I've always known, this fame isn't changing her" editorial by Lindsey Roth is published. This is in response to quiet-but-growing-louder speculation that Meghan has a new sense of entitlement, attitude, and rudeness.

4/3/2017: It's announced that Samantha Markle plans to write a book about Meghan. (Meghan gives her first brief against her sister the next day, on 4/4, largely in response to this news.)

4/8/2017: Meghan claps back against Pippa's "no ring, no bring" rule via an editorial.

4/9/2017: Meghan leaks that she loves Africa and Harry is taking her to visit again in October when Suits wraps.

4/20/2017: Meghan commissions a "Meghan is just like Kate" piece in the Daily Mail.

4/28/2017: Middleton hit job, accusing them of spending more time with the Cambridge children than their royal relatives. (Honestly, this reads more like a Charles hit job than Meghan's but it's part of a larger trend of Meghan sourcing stories that attack Kate.)

it's been a minute since the last signal hill update! if you're curious about the hood i recommend checking out the hood directory.

when editing the rest of round 3 i realized just how many babies were born or aged into toddlers, and how that's pretty much the only content i have for the rest of the round. so i decided to just compile them all so we can speed through.

here are some of the new babies of generation 2 - alex dunn (mikey & josie's son), adam fletcher (daniel's son), johnny armstrong (alien baby born to carter & tina), anya lee (born last round to bianca & nisha), and the larson kiddos, mars and his new baby sister kira (aj & markus' kids)

NOW we should be back on track, lmao. more screenshots from this round below the cut just so they exist somewhere, but i'm really ready to get to round 4.

dunn household, round 3 — josie and mikey shacked up last round, and now they have baby alex, who was a happy little accident.

fletcher household, round 3 — i spent the entire round balancing around baby adam. arhan was at work 90% of the time, so daniel took on a lot of the caretaking duties.

lee household, round 3 — over at the lee household, we just have seth and anya being cute babies. i think seth aged up on the final day of the round but you'll see him in round 4!

armstrong household, round 3 — i really took zero screenshots of the armstrongs this round lol. carter got abducted again, almost immediately after johnny was born. this will be baby #3, for those keeping track.

larson household, round 3 — aj and markus moved into a new house after mars was born, and found out aj was pregnant again shortly after moving in. the new house is a bit empty for now, but with mars aging up to a toddler, and baby kira arriving, it'll feel cramped soon enough.

and we're off to round 4! :)
