Do you want to know my thought process, leading up to HOH?

“oh my god is he serious there’s no way he’s gonna actually make him have a crush on Annabeth yeah just we need more of that terrible trope (c’mon please be Percy) are you seriously kidding me (wait omfg it might be) wait holy shi-”

Until the actual part I thought it was going to be Annabeth. I could not believe it. And yeah, it was fucking traumatic but do you know how many times I reread that passage because I thought it would go away? Be forgotten about forever? Never talked about again? But it WASNT. And I was incredulous.

Name one gay character from Harry Potter (no, dumbledore doesn’t count. literally stfu).

Name one gay character from divergent (Lynn dying and saying she loved Marlene doesn’t count). Edit: apparently there is also one gay couple and a guy having a crush on four, I had in fact forgotten about those (I haven’t read the books in 4+ years (2 of which I didn’t know I was gay) and I have always been impartial to lesbians ig)

Name one gay character from Hunger Games (no, Plurbius’ partner (Cyprus) and Barb Azure & the gal down the street don’t count).

Now you might be thinking “ha! you can’t say they don’t count!” but I CAN (especially dumbledore).

there’s a reason I remember the exact characters and the exact times their partners were mentioned! there’s a reason those are the only ones! Plurbius’ partner Cyprus is mentioned ONCE! and no pronouns used. Lynn and Marlene may have had chemistry before (I haven’t read the books in a while) but the only time she “came out” was her DEATH? and it could be interpreted differently. The Covey, Coriolanus, and Sejanus leaving to lake and letting Barb Azure see the gal up the street. That’s it! In the most popular Y/A books we get fed TABLE SCRAPS.

In PJO, it’s different. So much different. We have Nico, Will, Piper, Alex, Magnus (technically? idk), and probably more.

PJO also wasn’t marketed as some huge inclusive book! It was just a normal book, with a normal gay character in it. With 3! With 4! With 5!

No, not everybody in books needs to be gay. But some people in real life are, and sometimes those people have a hard time accepting that and sometimes seeing themselves represented helps just a tiny bit. So stfu and let us have this because y’all have EVERYONE else.

sorry if u answered this before but do you hc Eiffel as any particular race? I know him being white would probably match how he sees himself as the everyman. But on the other hand he gives me light skin vibes and I can't explain why. (Also no matter what he has long hair but curly haired Eiffel just speaks to me)

mm. i know you're just asking for my opinion, but that's a complicated question. and i am not the right person to be talking about this, so please take it with a grain of salt. one of the few legitimate criticisms i have of wolf 359 is that it's a show about personal identity, resisting dehumanization, and recognizing that other people navigate the world in different ways, but it tries to be raceblind. which. it can't. particularly when something like minkowski's identity as a polish immigrant is addressed.

i think one of the reasons that wolf 359 characters feel as real as they do is how collaborative the character development process was; they are really roles that are shaped by and belong to those actors. lovelace is played by a black actress, cecilia lynn-jacobs's input determined a lot of things about her, and the audience reaction to lovelace getting shot near the end of s3 was the way it was because there was an understanding of her as a black woman. whether she was initially written to be black is kind of irrelevant in that case, i think - she still is, and she resonates with people that way.

but every other main character in wolf 359 is played by, and similarly influenced by, a white person. and that's a problem. no matter how you approach it, wolf 359 is not a diverse show: if they were written as non-white, then being played by white people would be a problem. raceblindness also enforces a default assumption of whiteness. i think if eiffel wasn't meant to be read as white, then there are aspects of his character arc, his assumption of himself as the "default" person and general ignorance of how it feels to be "other", that probably could've been explored from a different angle.

i know people who see him as white because of that, and i know people who see him as another race because of how they connect with him as a character. and i can understand both perspectives on that, but i don't think there's a right way to approach it. i think the show unfortunately, in this one specific way, kind of dug its own grave. gabriel urbina has said however you see these characters, that's correct, and i can agree with the sentiment, but it's also mired in a lot of difficult context, because these are specific people, and these things should matter to them. it can't be interchangeable, and so it can't be that ambiguous. it could be handled a lot better. and based on his more recent work + politics, i wonder if he would've approached it differently, if he had all the information then.

about how i see eiffel: i've said many times before that i see him as a man who could be reasonably played by zach valenti, so the eiffel in my head is white. the eiffel in the art i commission, or the art where i'm like "oh!! eiffel!!" is not necessarily. the second most eiffel-like guy i can think of, who i also use as a reference sometimes, is iranian. but for me to say that eiffel was iranian is not really a claim i think it would be right for me to make, and i think it is probably not true.

the main features that i think eiffel must have are dark, wavy/curly hair, prominent nose, noticeable body hair, generally expressive. he absolutely cannot be light haired, clean shaven, or pale. and from a general standpoint, like... a wide variety of men could meet those qualifications. i don't want to reinforce an assumption of whiteness, but i'm also extremely wary about treating race as functionally cosmetic, since. again. it can't be. no show is removed from real life social contexts, and wolf 359 is about a lot of very real things.

i think if you do interpret eiffel as specifically a cis, able-bodied white guy, there's something very real and very unfortunate about the fact he initially ignores lovelace and hera, two marginalized women, and seeks reassurance from minkowski that they were overreacting. he listens eventually, but the person who gets through to him is presumably the Next Most Visibly Privileged Person, and that's... hm.

#genuinely i don't know. sorry you got an essay about it when you were just asking my opinion #i'm completely with you re: curly haired eiffel and i think however you personally see him like #if you connect with him in that way. i don't think that's something that needs justification.#like representation is such a complicated topic from the perspective of individual interpretation #i just. lovelace is black and that can't be said of any other wolf character in the same way and i'm not really sure #what the right approach is. or if there is one. obviously i am open to thoughts + perspectives on this. i'm not the right person for it #it's just something i wonder about a lot.#asks

Gremlins: Actor AU

A quick synopsis: This AU revolves around the actual mogwais and gremlins just being actors and how the gremlins movies and show are literal movies and show.

Random ahh info about it:

The team uses practical effects for various scenes. Gizmo and the gremlins multiplying, Spider gremlin, Stripe's death, they are all practical effects. However though, stuff like Billy's injuries in the 1st movie and the scar on Muray's head were make up.

However though, while most of his injuries were make up, Stripe did actually by accident claw Billy's chest. Luckily the wound wasn't that bad so Billy was okay and able to recover. Stripe ended up apologizing to Billy for the scar.

Gizmo and Stripe are long time friends, both knew each other since college (they went to the same one). They were in a lot of movies together and due to Gizmo always playing the role of a hero and Stripe always being some kind of villain, they have been seen as one of the most iconic hero and villain duo.

Billy and Kate are a couple in real life and have 3 kids together. Ironically, in the 2nd movie, they intentionally wrote that they would be married soon which was actually the case since, just a month after the release of the movie, they got married.

Mohawk is always casted as the villain but in reality is actually very nice and caring and offers the other actors tips on acting.

Mohawk actually hates spider so it freaked him out a little that his character would later turn into a spider.

The mogwai that played Stripe as a mogwai, originally auditioned for Gizmo's role but sadly didn't get it. But the director loved his perfomance so much that he decided that he would be the mogwai form of Stripe that eventually turns into a gremlin.

Gizmo knew of the mogwai that played Mohawk as a mogwai and asked him to come and played the role. After a while of thinking he went to try it out and was able to get the part.

Daffy used to work in an insane asylum and a mental hospital. So he witnessed a lot of crazy and deranged patients and once that were even psychotic. He quitted because it became too stressful. However though, thanks to what he has seen, he was able to incorporate that in his acting when playing his character.

Lenny and George are famously known for playing the brains and brawns duo thru out every movie and or show they have been in. Usually the roles are George is the brain while Lenny is the brawn. They are both twin brothers who since babies had a close bond together.

George actually broke his character a few times while recording. It was kind of hard for him to keep the same face without unintentionally laughing really loud.

Earl was a very busy person. He acted in a lot of movies and shows which sadly led to him sometimes having to quit his roles or leave the studio just to focus on another movie or show. Which is why he explained to the director for why he is quitting. Despite this, his scenes were still in the movie and he was still credited.

Barney was originally going to be killed and eaten by the gremlins, but the director often saw Barney be very clingy to the actors and was always looking for attention and the actors often played with the dog or were friendly with him. So the director decided to cut that scene out because he didn't like the thought of the actors who treat the dog very lovingly to suddenly kill him, even if it was just acting.

Lynn was gonna get her head decapitated, but the actress didn't like it in the slightest and kept asking for it to be changed and it was.

The blender gremlin ended up throwing up in the fake blender because of how fast it was spinning. Yeah some of the green blood was not fake by the way that was his vomit-

The younger actors actually look up to Greta and Brain because they were apart of their childhood, and both were known as one of the TV star legends. So they were excited to be playing with them and they were one of the nicest people they've met. Plus they were willing to give advice to some of the new actors.

Snout Jr is actually Snout's in real life son.

Claw and one of the writers had beef which was the cause of the decision to make Claw's character in love with Gizmo. Both actors ended up being uncomfortable because of the knowledge the characters they were playing were actually related. Reason why they often argued with the writer.

Noggin had a habit of playing both dumb and smart characters. So the writers decided to make his character first dumb and then intelligent.

Most of the actors are married to someone.

Riley's last name was on purpose greene due to the fact he has a habit of voicing various green characters.

Fong Wing's fight against the gremlins was a tribute to Lynn Pelter's actor who passed away and her scene where she fights the gremlins in the kitchen.

Randall is actually a successful inventor and often brought his inventions to show off to the cast.

Bat gremlin loves horror and anything dark, which is why he is often acting in horror movies or anything dark, simply because he loves them.

The gremlins and mogwais are capable of doing their own stunts.

Due to beef with the producer, Vegetable gremlin's scenes were cut out. They can still be found on the DVD version of the movie.

Mrs. Deagle did nearly suffer a severe injury while acting but luckily she was okay and medical assistance was called to check her up and see if she was okay or not.

Kate's backstory with her dad was based on something similar she saw. But instead of her dad dying, he ended up slipping on some ice and nearly breaking his back and twisting his ankle. But he still did everything to make his daughter love his present. Even if he almost suffered an injury-

Elle's actor had mental breakdowns because the scene with her backstory were similar to what she went thru, she was abandoned by her family but eventually take in by a family who cared for her. Sadly her in real life parents were killed. She was allowed to take breaks to calm down.

The gremlins are completely opposite to their movie selves.

How come mother mary au jude and adam dont get along ... im curious...

Oh boy. Like most of the relationships in this AU, it’s complicated. It’s mostly one-sided, with Adam resenting his father and making sure he knows it, whether that be through glares or snappy comments.

Jude’s presence in Adam and Lynn’s life decreased as the years went by, where he was heavily present before, for Lynn’s sake, he soon became more like a ghost in the house: a subject neither Lynn nor Adam wanted to dwell on.

He does care for Lynn, he truly does, even if they didn’t work out, but once the pressure between them started to build again as they tried to make this co-parenting think work, Jude chose to avoid it rather than deal with it head on and communicate. And he avoided it more. And more. And more. Until his presence was monthly at best.

As Adam grew older, he picked up on this, and when he was around fifteen, he walked in on his mother crying, and that upset him. It was painful to witness. When you have a parent you’re really close with, seeing them cry is… a lot, especially because as their child, you can’t do as much as you’d like, and that’s exactly how Adam feels as a whole. He could hug her, tell her everything will be okay, but it wouldn’t change anything. His mum, at this point, had no one, and his father was too much of a coward to be there for her when she needed him most.

He started to notice more little things after that, the way his mother would sigh when his father would only answer after three attempted calls, how her smile would falter every rare visit, an inescapable tension between the two of them, how she would always close her door and cry at night so Adam wouldn’t hear. And he hated it. He hated it so much. He still does.

He eventually confronted Jude about it, but all his father did was throw around weak excuses, about how he was busy with work and ‘all that’.

As well as this, there’s a part of Adam that fears he’s the problem. He hates Jude, but the idea of his father not loving him, leaving his mother behind because Adam was too much, that hurts him just as much, and it’s not something he wants to acknowledge. Sometimes he misses the days his father would visit and he’d get to sit in his lap as they watched Star Wars together, sharing a bowl of popcorn and commenting on everything the whole way through.

Hating him is just easier.

On Jude’s end there’s no hate, maybe a little fear (have Adam’s eyes always been that bright?) but never hate. He wants to be a part of Adam’s life, and Lynn’s too, but he can’t push himself to make that leap, and so he just steps further and further away from the edge until they’re a blur in his vision. There’s actually more to their dynamic on Jude’s end but I’m tucking that away for later. As a hint: Jude saw Six in their house that night, but has since convinced himself it wasn’t real. For the most part.

When they do all sit down for a very rare family dinner, it’s… tense. Evelin was present for one once and she would not recommend it.

hello hello i was gonna make one of these sooner or later! thank u to @loveismine for asking abt them this was the motivation i needed LOL . also tagging @eqqbyte @harvsbian since they asked :]

STORY SUMMARY:

my oc universe (3 years unnamed and counting!) is set in a universe where most people die twice; the first time, you come back with powers based off of the way you died (or rarely something completely unrelated,) the second time you die for real. this brings with it a bunch of new cultural norms; middle and upper classes have ceremonies to achieve specific powers, lower class families sometimes save up for these ceremonies and bank on having one child with practical powers to support them through work. ptsd from the 'first deaths,' especially if youre someone who was put through a specific ceremony for it, is extremely common but largely dismissed. etc etc there's a lot of pointless details i've thought out

the story is centered around nebula - one of the many 'children' (test subjects) of the very very corrupt government - her wife lynn, a pretty normal woman who works as a model, and lynn's childhood friend dia (and HER sister ember) who resents nebula because . . . : )

nebula is keeping secrets, notably her actual origin and why she and lynn even met to begin with; when ember gets kidnapped during nebula and lynn's wedding, the entire plot kicks off.

CHARACTER SUMMARIES (UNDER THE CUT):

NEBULA

one of the few legitimate children to her science-obsessed parents, nebula was involved in their government research since she was a child. the government intended to create an army of extremely powerful individuals, and to do this carried out a series of experiments to see just how random someone's powers could be - and if powers could be specifically engineered to manifest in a certain way.

to nebula's parents she was just another test subject, so she was given the name NE-004 and at five years old left to suffocate in space as part of one of their experiments alongside a group of other children. she came back to life with gravity powers; she can alter the gravitational field strength of any object within a 1km radius, as long as it's within line of sight. this wasn't the intent of the experiment, and so nebula was deemed a 'failure' and spent most of her life until around 19 growing up in a government facility with dozens of her 'siblings', being trained in combat, weapons etc. so she could still be useful in the future as a guard. it was dehumanising, isolating, and nebula and her 'siblings' were often subject to abuse from eachother or their handlers, or painful/invasive experiments from the facility's scientists.

nebula was sent out as a sort of spy when dia's family caught the attention of the government (more about this in ember's section, but ember's powers manifested in a unique way that the government wanted to research.) her mission was to get close to the family, gain their trust and eventually obtain the information the government needed more discreetly.

and then she met lynn.

lynn was dia's best friend; the two were basically inseparable, so she was the perfect way to get closer to dia's family without seeming too suspicious, especially to the now paranoid and distrusting dia herself. with lynn, nebula felt for the first time that she was being treated like an actual person; her own emotions were clumsy and her social skills awful from her lonely upbringing, but the two of them quickly fell in love and got engaged.

all the while, lynn had no idea of nebula's origins. neither of them liked to discuss their families, so she had no real reason to suspect. but in the background nebula's superiors were getting impatient. two years passed and with no helpful information gained in all that time, they sought to resolve the issue themselves.

which leads to ember being kidnapped at the wedding.

LYNN

grew up as the oldest sibling in a large working class family; had to take care of her siblings a lot while her parents worked toward the promise of a proper ceremony for her when she became a teenager. lynn's family intended for her to gain fire powers since they were pretty practical + versatile, and as a result set her and dia up on playdates so they could become friends and eventually train eachother's powers together.

at the age of 11 she drowned. as a result she gained the power to turn her hair into water to its roots; something her family obviously didn't want for her. lynn's relationship with her family broke down over the years, not helped by her coming forward about the actions of a 'family friend' from when she was younger and made all the worse when they didn't believe her. she left home to live with dia's family at the age of 15; she still considers dia's parents more family than anyone else.

passing school with alright grades, lynn went into modelling and quickly picked up traction thanks to her looks and powers. she met nebula a little into her career; they bonded strangely quickly, and despite dia's distrust of nebula lynn proposed to her anyway. her life was going good.

in reality, lynn's self esteem was extremely low; her powers were weak and good for nothing except aesthetics (especially in comparison to nebula and dia's), she still felt guilt over 'abandoning' her family, she felt stupid and naive for letting herself be manipulated as a child but refused to kill her trust in people for it.

all feelings that would spiral out of control after the wedding, and after nebula would be forced to admit the truth.

DIA

pretty tame middle class upbringing; her mothers both worked for the government (relatively low level civil servants though.) went through a ceremony at the age of 13, just like her parents had before her, and came out with horns and a devil-like tail that could materialise fire (she doesn't use the horns often though because they singe her hair lol) and also severe nightmares but that's supposed to be normal.

pretty upbeat and flippant about most things but is fiercely protective of her younger sister ember, especially after the media attention her family gained in the wake of ember's powers manifesting. she shelters her pretty severely in an attempt to protect her and this definitely won't come back to bite her.

EXTREMELY mistrustful of nebula from the start; mostly gets along with her for lynn's sake. her hatred reaches a peak after the wedding and in the main events of the plot.

not a lot to say about her tbh? i love her though : ) if there's a character whose pov you'd be reading from itd probably be her

EMBER

dia's younger sister! more of a side character but she is plot important. very sheltered upbringing (much moreso than dia since ... dia is very overprotective lol) very nonchalant about like.. everything, she doesn't have much of a filter but it usually doesnt get her in trouble because shes not a mean person to begin with. underwent the same ceremony dia did at age 13.

the clawlike hands (she can summon fire w them) are the manifestation of her powers; this got her and her family media attention because this was the exact same way her mother's powers manifested - an extremely rare occurrence the reason she gained the attention of the government. this was one of their points of research; if there was a link between family members' powers and if there was a way to ENSURE family members had the same powers. this of course leads to them sending nebula out and later ember getting kidnapped.

leader of the most high-profile resistance against the government. had a relatively happy childhood that was cut abruptly short when she was out with her family one day; they were mugged, and at 12 years old mercury was stabbed to death alongside her parents. she came back to life with the power to manipulate metals and was almost immediately bought into a prestigious school to train her powers, fully funded by the government. meanwhile her younger sister (being at home w a babysitter at the time) was put in foster care; their relationship was distant, though not from lack of trying on mercury's part.

mercury quietly grew to hate her powers; they were the reason she could barely see her sister, the result of her family's deaths, and yet they were treated like a blessing by everyone around her. at the same time they were the only advantage she really had in life, and in a way the last thing her parents had given her - so she trained like hell and graduated with top grades lest it all be for nothing.

somewhere along the line in high school she met z and they fell in love; z was smart and easy to talk to and about the only person she seemed to be able to have a real critical conversation with about their world - what these powers meant, why they happened in the first place. they both ended up in one of the country's top universities; funded and used personally by the government to scout new talent.

and then, at the start of her second year of university, z vanished. no goodbye, no texts, nothing.

mercury spiralled. she dropped out and searched desperately for z long after anyone else had accepted her death, devoted her life to that and nothing else and barely took care of herself at all. along the way she stumbled across forums; huge networks of people whose loved ones had vanished in the same way. then, even smaller networks talking about how they'd been working for the government months before and now their so-called 'employers' were acting like they'd never existed.

the rebellion was never meant to be what it became. it started as a sort of support group; a shoddily made up forum mercury created herself where people could freely discuss their loved ones and what might have happened to them. the group grew massively, countless stories of the very same circumstances; people digging up whatever proof they could, all manner of people contacting mercury asking how to help, offering funds, even those wanting to seek their own justice - and mercury can't say her encouragement of it was entirely selfless.

the grief had to go somewhere physical. over the years mercury's group outgrew it's original shitty webpage and became something else entirely. but despite being branded as the resistance's leader, most of its build-up felt out of her hands; she managed the funds and tracked members, sure, but she was never a leader. she couldn't give speeches or motivate any emotion but anger. violence was the language she spoke best, despite it all.

she never forgot about z. every time they raided a government facility or uncovered some new documents she looked for her face.

she found it, eventually - on the side that she'd been fighting against for years.

despite that, mercury still loved her. z was one of the only things she had left to love and she clung to her with everything she had. noone knew, of course, because the consequences for either of them would be deadly, but they still got together frequently. despite everything z had done, despite everything mercury knew she'd been capable of and despite how much they fought, now.

mercury is a minor character in the main story; she becomes a sort of mentor figure to nebula and her and z's relationship is sort of a parallel/worst case scenario of nebula and lynn's. i love her very very dearly.

Annie helped Andy to their room and laid him on the bed, removing his shoes and socks.

It’s been around five minutes, both of them were sitting against the bed on Andy’s side. Andy kept taking deep breaths and drinking his water, while Annie took his other hand and rubbed her thumb against the back of his hand.

“We need to talk.” He finally spoke, Annie just looked at him with worried eyes. “Laurie came back, and she wants Jake.”

“What? Has she lost her mind?”

“The person who kept calling me today was her, she called me last night, when I came to change my clothes…”

“You said it was Lynn.”

“I know, I lied, and I’m sorry! I should’ve told you, I’m a fucking coward! Laurie was outside. Remember Stacy?” Annie nodded, “I believe Laurie hired her to tell her information about me. There’s no other way she knew where we live. She knows about you too, although she just thought we were having sex.” Annie raised her brow “I mean, we do. But you know our relationship is not just sex, right honey? I love you and care for you.” She smiled at his statement which made him smiled as well.

“And what are we going to do?”

“What did you just say?” Andy was surprised she used the word “we” in the question.

“What are we going to do? She can’t just come back here and take Jake to New York, she left him. Jake thinks she is dead.”

“She said if I didn’t allow her to see him we will solve this the hard way.”

“Meaning?”

“I think she will fight for Jake’s custody.”

“She can’t do that! Jake is yours! I don’t want her near my baby!”

“Honey…”

“She doesn’t deserve him!”

“You better not!”

“There is another matter.”

“There’s more?”

“I’m afraid so. I haven’t been honest with you about my life, or with anyone for that matter. I think is time you know the truth, I don’t want any secrets between us. Even though it meant you could leave me. My dad…”

“Oh my god, is he back too? Please don’t tell me he wants Jake too, cuz that will be ridiculous.”

“I don’t understand.”

“He is in jail, honey. Life sentence.” Andy took a deep breath and continue once he saw Annie didn’t say anything. “I told you my dad wasn’t around when I was a kid, but I never told you why. And it is because he was… still is in jail. He raped and murdered a girl. They caught him, mom filed for divorce and last time I saw him I was 6 maybe, my mom took me to see him. I didn’t want to come back after that.”

“Why not?”

“Honey, are you listening to what I just said? He killed someone! He freaked me out! The way he talked, the way he moved, I was terrified of him. I didn’t have a normal family, I come from a murderer! Nobody knows this, just you and Laurie who apparently find out before she left me. “If she believed that, then she was stupid.” Annie remained sited on Andy’s lap.

“I would understand if you want to leave me, I…” He hiccupped, “I… please don’t leave me, I won’t hurt you. I promise I’ll be good.” Andy was sobbing by now, he looked like a scared child, and it broke Annie’s heart to see him like this.

“Baby,” She spoke softly to him, his hand caressing his cheek, “You are not your dad, I’m not afraid of you. I have no reason to be.” Andy kept crying as she spoke, “How can I be scared of you?” Andy listened to her attentively, “You help people, you help those families to catch the murderer of their daughters, and you help me when I needed the most, you took me into your house and you didn’t even hesitate. You were there as my boss, as my friend…and I’m glad I met you, and it makes me so happy to be with you, to be your girlfriend, I love you, Andy. And nothing will ever change that.”

No one, besides her mother, ever talked to him like that. Annie hugged him tightly, until his sobbing stopped. His head was hidden in her chest, as Annie stroke the back of his head. They didn’t know how much time had passed, until Andy lifted his head and looked at her.

“I’m sorry.” He whispered with a raspy voice.

“Don’t be.” She kissed him softly, “We will figure out what to do about Laurie. She won’t get Jake.” Andy nodded. “I think you should change your phone number. I don’t want Laurie calling you whatever she wants, because clearly she makes you feel uneasy.”

Later that night, Andy collapsed around 8. He fell asleep as soon as his head touched the pillow, however he didn’t rest.

Annie moved in her sleep, her arm falling over Andy’s pillow, cold.

“Andy?” It was still dark outside, the bathroom light was off. She took her phone and saw it marked 2:55 a.m. She left the bed and went downstairs only to find Andy in his office with the laptop on. “Andy it’s 3 in the morning,” She rubbed her eyes “Come back to bed, please.”

“Can’t, working.”

“Working on what?”

“There must be a reason Laurie wants Jake back, and I need to find out why.”

“Baby,” She walked towards him and close the computer “Stop, this is insane. You don’t have to do this now. Laurie hasn’t done anything yet.”

“I need to be one step ahead of her.” He tried to open the laptop again and Annie stopped him.

@hondagirll Tagged me to share my top 9 books, which I don't think is a physical possibility for me to do. I love books and choosing my top 9 would be a crime. There are single series that I could choose 9 books from, so instead I am going to do the top 9 that I have read this year. It'll probably be mostly YA books - I don't tend to read too many adult books bc there's too much smut for my little asexual eyes.

Make sure you check TWs before reading any of these. Some of them dealt with some pretty heavy topics.

So out of the 63 books I have read so far this year, my favs are:

They Hate Each Other by Amanda Woody - This is a mm enemies-to-lovers fake dating contemporary book. The characters (or specifically, one of the characters) was a little over the top sometimes, but I adored them. They were both dealing with so much shit and there were some really mature topics that were offset by the humor. First sentence: "Jonah Collins is dancing on my table, and I think... yes. I think I'm about to lose my shit."

The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas: This is pitched as Percy Jackson meets The Hunger Games, and is the first book in a duology. This book is so diverse and so queer, and I need Aiden to release the second book as soon as humanly possible. I love all of the characters, even the ones who are little shits, and I can't wait to see how the series concludes. First sentence: "First, there was only Sol among a sea of stars."

The Luis Ortega Survival Club by Sonora Reyes: This was a tough choice because I read both of Sonora's books this year. I loved their first book so much that I immediately picked this one up. But I sobbed so many times reading this book, it was a little ridiculous. I think it might have been my first time reading a book with an autistic main character, which I obviously need to work on correcting. First sentence: "The driver looks at me like he knows exactly what I just did."

Sparks Fly by Birdie Lynn: If you wanted to psychoanalyze me, this is another queer enemies-to-lovers, fake dating book. But this time it takes place at a magic school and also includes soulmates trope. Do I need to say more? First sentence: "Hit me with your best shot, Pham."

Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli: I just know that Becky had a vendetta with this book, and I am absolutely thriving at the way she took the horrible way that she was treated online and channeled that into this book. This book examines the way that some people think there is a "correct" way to be queer, and absolutely challenges that. Let me catch Gretchen in a dark alley, I swear. First sentence: "I haven't quite unclicked my seat belt, but I'm getting there. Obviously."

The Sun and The Star by: Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro: What is a favorites list without something from the Riordanverse? I am so happy that we got a Nico-centric book, since he is one of my favorite characters. I also loved getting more information about Will Solace. I'm glad that Rick brought in a queer author to help make this book a reality and I really think their writing styles blended well together. First sentence: "Nico faced the worst decision of his life, and he was certain he was going to mess it up."

Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler: This book was a lot. It was dark and gruesome and I spent the whole time completely horrified. It was also very real and unfortunately stands up too well to the test of time. I listened to this on audiobook and do I ever have some visceral memories of what I was doing when certain events in this book happened. I absolutely want to continue with the series, but that's something you have to be in the right frame of mind for. First sentence: "I had my recurring dream last night. I guess I should have expected it."

The Invisible Spy by Lisa McMann: This is the second book in The Forgotten Five series. I'll admit that I started this series because the author is the mother of the actress who plays Nancy Drew, but I genuinely enjoy these books. They're really solid middlegrade books and I enjoy the characters. Think Descendants meets superheroes. I like watching these kids come to terms with the fact that their parents maybe weren't the best people, and seeing how they deal with the moral quandary of having villains for parents. First sentence: "President Daniel Fuerte sat at his cluttered desk in the presidential office on the top floor of Magdalia Palace."

Skye Falling by Mia McKenzie: This book proves that picking something you've never heard of up on a whim can be a good thing. I desperately wanted an audiobook and I chose this off of my library's small list of queer books that were available at that moment. I had never heard of it before, but I adored this book. It tells the story of what happens when an almost 40 year old woman, who avoids conflict and personal relationships is faced with the very real product of selling her eggs at age 26. First sentence: "I'm lying very still on top of a hotel bed's rumpled sheets."

oh dear oh boy.. this is gonna be a real weird mix, y'all. here goes..

(in mostly alphabetical order bc that's how they're organised in my comfort films shelf, which also includes the Resident Evil series as well as all things related to Alien and Cube, and also American Mary fuck yeah ..bc I'm a weirdo)

Adult Life Skills. makes me cry. every time. without exceptions. but in like a good way. gotta have a little smidge of Jodie Whittaker on this list, too.

Annihilation. duh. obviously. so good. definitely a good distraction from anything else going on in my life. plus so much stuff to think about. (one day I will read the book this is based on. I stg)

Beyond the Ashes / Ash Tuesday. just so wonderful. I know the topic it deals with is pretty heavy, but it's about healing and coming together. and the power of poetry in crisis and the power of music and giant goth/punk boots. do recommend a watch. originally I used to only watch this via dailymotion bc I was in a Pauley Perrette phase, but it grew on me, with me, whatever you wanna call it, so I eventually caved and had to have an imported disc version for safety purposes, to keep close to my heart.

Dredd. what can I say, I just love some messed up future stuff. and Lena Headey. and it's just well made. love it. so good. 11/10. will watch again and again and again. (as with the rest of this list)

Edge of Tomorrow. again, with the messed up future stuff. add some time travel and Emily Blunt as an action badass, and of course I was sold. plus it helps that Tom Cruise keeps getting smushed like a bug. always a plus.

Sunshine Cleaning. hoo boy, I have cried. and cried. and cried. (sometimes I still cry over the lack of fanfic for Norah and Lynn. they are wonderful and I wish there was more of them. plus Norah is def a character I can hella relate to.) something about complicated, messy familial relationships will always get me. even if they are sisters and I only have a brother, it still hits hard. and the scene with the car radio, and the other scene with the sprinkler just fucking wreck me. (if you know you know) also The Decemberists' The Crane Wife 3 in the trailer, good lord. fuck me up

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec. (the funny thing is that I have the DVD but I have never once watched it, bc it's in German and the only alternative on the disc is to watch the original French with German subtitles, and I'm just too used to watching the French with English subtitles version that I downloaded at some point.) anyway, Pterosaur set free in Paris, a goofy detective and a sillier big game hunter, a sister trying to bring her sister back to life, a talking mummy. just sheer wonderfulness, but will also probably make you cry if you are at all affected by, once again, complicated sibling relationships.

HEART OF THE SUN WARRIOR BY SUE LYNN TAN

If I were to describe this book in two words, they'd be "unnecessary" and "exasperating." I want to start by saying that I LOVED Daughter of the Moon Goddess. But this? I don't even know where to start with it. I was excited to see where this sequel would go in the beginning, but that anticipation died quickly. It became evident fairly clearly that the plot was incredibly lacking. There was not enough content in this book to constitute a sequel. The actual plot dragged - throughout the book I found myself consistently bored. Timing of events was sometimes confusing because of how inconsistently we discussed/read about actual events or battles, and I was left with many unanswered questions that could potentially be major plot holes, or at the very least were sloppy writing. (How did Tao know how to shapeshift, if it was such a closely guarded secret? Before Wenzhi's father's death, he would have been the one to cast the enchantment, but there's no way he would have put his life at risk like that, so how does that make sense? Who is Zhiyi's mother? How did Yanming's soul come to be in Wugang's possession, unless our perception of how his army was formed is completely wrong?) At many times, it seemed the only actual content was the incredibly stupid and frustrating interpersonal drama and watching characterizations being absolutely ripped apart. Bringing the love triangle from the first book back? Are you kidding? Nothing is wrong with loving two people, but Xingyin was an asshole - she constantly led both of them on, refusing to analyze her own feelings, constantly flipping back and forth with zero regard for the hurt she caused. I was constantly frustrated with her downright stupid decisions and odd attitude throughout the novel. Liwei, who was bright and joyous and strong in the first book, became nearly a carbon copy of Wenzhi in characterization and seemed to be blindly ignoring all hurt Xingyin was causing him out of some misguided belief that her feelings would return to what they used to be. Wenzhi himself was given no actual redemption arc - apparently, we're just supposed to accept that he isn't actually a bad person, because Xingyin loves him, even though he acted incredibly selfishly and cruelly for nothing more than the sake of power. And don't even get me started on how Xingyin views both of them as hurting her equally, Wenzhi by his betrayal that she forgives quite easily and Liwei by... being FORCED into a marriage he DOESN'T WANT? Something which she does not even understand, much less forgive, until well into the second half of this book. Pretty much every other character is done incredibly dirty by the writing. Chang'e still has close to no personality, Houyi's resurrection still seems to serve no real purpose beyond making Chang'e's decades of grief (grief that Houyi could have stopped, mind you) meaningless. The Celestial Empress is first portrayed as a vindictive, selfish mother-in-law archetype, but then somehow through her death Xingyin comes to understand that she was just a woman in a bad situation, that she was only like that because of circumstance? The amount of potential killed in this book was honestly impressive, as was the apathy that it brought about in me. With a few small plot changes and a good, quality epilogue, Daughter of the Moon Goddess could have been the perfect standalone novel. But instead we have this - unsatisfying (read: nonexistent) character development, anticlimactic plot resolution, and a bland, unhappy ending.
