He's so beautiful and tragic and she's so beautiful and heroic. This has too work out, right?

As usual, spoiler-free above the cut, spoilers below.

General Rating: 8/10 Fight Choreo: 8/10 Cinematography and CGI: 8.9/10 Acting: 8.9/10 Costume: 8/10 Scene/Setting: 10/10 Heartbreak Meter: 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔/10

It's the end of the world, ok? What's worse than the end? Li Susu is the only one left of her family and sect, and they risk everything to send her back in time to stop the evil and unstoppable Tantai Jin. As much as she hates him for slaughtering everyone and everything she knows and loves, it turns out his past life? Sad. We have no time to feel bad for him- Li SuSu, now in the body of the frankly awful daughter of mortal General Li and wife to Tantai Jin, must figure out how to keep this man from becoming a monster.

Luo Lun Xi (Leo Luo) does a fantastic job as the male lead, showing the complicated feelings of the character and his evolution quite seamlessly. While I can no longer trust Bai Lu bc every drama I watch with her makes me want to snap my own neck by the end, she does a decent job with the character, though she fails to sell us on Bai Lu really falling in love most of the time. We get glimmers and hints, never a sure thing until we are quite deep in the story and it is the bigger gestures of the writing rather than the acting that sells the love between them. Deng Wei, who you may recognize as the angel baby Tushan Jing from Lost You Forever, is...there? But mostly forgettable in this role, unlike in other roles I've seen him in. Chen Du Ling makes a deep impression as through the timelines we get to see her be soft, sweet, cunning, manipulative, and foolishly evil (and her acting SELLS IT.)

This drama was a well-written and entertaining little ride, with its biggest strength lying in the way their romance is developed and maintained. It goes a bit flat in the middle where it feels it has to explain itself a bit too much, but it's wide ride.

So did it break my heart? Of course it did.

Let me be frank- I was upset with the ending. While it made sense, it did not give the emotional payoff I needed for the events we were put through. The writing was strongest when making you feel bad for Tantai Jin and and showing him grow under the warmth of Li Susu's kindness. You want good things for him. The show goes out of its way to tell us that he can be good if given the chance. When he becomes the ruler of his country, he immediately starts stripping away the unfair laws his brother put in place and works toward making the country better. When he has the chance to take revenge on his awful little wife, he remembers the kindness Li Susu showed him (after she took over his evil little wife, but he doesn't learn that til later) and is good to her.

It was hard to sell me on Susu loving him until after they were separated and Susu returned to her timeline. The longing she was shown to feel, the impact he had on her was what really sold it. But I cannot emphasize enough that the writing had to do that, not Bai Lu. She was so...stiff? One note? She had me convinced that this was just a mission for her bc she failed to show me any real emotion or affection for this man.

These characters were not "destined to be together"- they fought long and hard to love each other and in the end, they put the needs of the universe before their love.

NO! I don't want them to.

3 different lifetimes. THREE in which they fall in love and it ends in disaster- only in the final one does it not end in disaster for everyone else. I understand that it needed to happen, hence the masterful writing, but ffs let me have a happy ending.

I am a hopeless romantic, first and foremost, and so if you bill me a romance, I need a romance with a happy ending. Sell it to me as an epic or a tragedy and I'm prepared, but sell me a romance and I'm waiting for them to be happy.

Synopsis :

Zhou Sheng Chen was raised by his brother, the Emperor, until the age of thirteen, when he set out to defend the border and establish himself as a loyal and accomplished general. However, political scheming and tragic events result in Cui Shi Yi falling mute, her former fiance becoming a child Emperor, and Zhou Sheng Chen returning to the capital amidst a cloud of political turmoil.

Against the Cui family's protests, the Empress Dowager Regent changes the terms of Cui Shi Yi's betrothal. Her new fiance is the Emperor's sickly, young companion and the future Crown Prince, if he can survive long enough to come of age. Zhou Sheng Chen accepts Cui Shi Yi as his disciple to resolve lingering animosity between the royal family and the Cui family, and Cui Shi Yi suddenly finds herself leaving her sheltered life in the capital for Zhou Manor in the Western State.

Despite their differences as a mute and sheltered young noblewoman from the capital and a battle-hardened general, Zhou Sheng Chen and Cui Shi Yi soon form a strong bond as master and disciple. My thoughts on this drama :

Although this is pobably Bai Lu's best performance to date, I unfortunately found this show pretty underwhelming.

Allen Ren is an amazing actor, but his lack of expressions in this one left me disappointed.

I know it is also part of his character, but there is a fine line between interesting aloofness and plain boring blandness.

We've referred to ourselves collectively for so long because the times we end up blurry or rapidly switching makes it hard to establish hard lines between us. But we still don't want to be seen as singular, so we thought we'd craft intros! We'll keep this one updated.

🌕 Collective name: Prism / The Prism

🌕 Collective pronouns: they/them, ona

🌕 We are a median subsystem! We're all spiritually alterhuman as well. We consider ourselves to share a soul.

🌕 We are a monoconscious subsystem! We aren't really able to communicate between ourselves. Switching feels more like shapeshifting, but by changing fundamental aspects about ourself/ves.

🌕 We are collectively frontstuck. The closest we can get to leaving front is a tuned-out, almost half-asleep state while members not in the subsystem use the body. However, we can enter headspace to an extent via meditation! We share a mindform that changes appearance depending on facet.

🌕 Our three most likely origins include autistic masking, spiritual alterhumanity, and regular old complex trauma

🌕 We use "we" and "I" both pretty fluidly, since not only are we all connected facets, but we share the same point of awareness due to our monoconscious structure.

🌕 We collectively identify as greysexual demiromantic, but that varies significantly depending on the member! Gender isn't really a factor to us in attraction as much as a certain "vibe" we can't quite describe.

🌕 As for our own gender, the body is transneu and we all identify at least partially with the moon, stars, & ocean, but gender specifics vary between members. We're also pretty collectively lunaeflux ! Species-wise, we collectively identify as a shapeshifter. (Not a physical shifter)

🌕 We're collectively a Chaos witch, and while all of us believe in one way or another, some of us practice in outerworld more than others.

💜 Moth - they/it - I'm the one that typed all that out so I guess I'll put myself first ^^ I'm uhh a moth idk. We have a few past lives where we were a moth so I'm an amalgamation of all that, and I also tend to front when we're low energy or need to take a rest. I'm usually around at night and I gravitate toward the color purple. I'm greysexual and demiromanticflux, I think

🌘 Lucis - lu/lun, ou/oun, they/them - Hi, I'm a moon elf that comes around pretty often to hyperfixate/enthuse about special inerests, manage relationships, and do most outerworld magic. I can be a bit of an anxiety holder but that's okay- I'm also the system-manageriest of all of us, so I try to stay aware of and record as much as possible about us. Ask me about our past lives!

🌑 Eclipse - they/it - Some sort of living shadow being, paranoia holder & handler of meltdowns, as well as an OCD holder. Caring & dedicated, sticks to its beliefs.

🗡️ Aeber - they/them, lu/lun, ou/oun - An amalgam of a few different "thief archetype" past lives, distrusting and quiet. Willing to go farther than most of us to take care of what needs to be done, but pushes outsiders away because of it. Keeps an extremely small close circle only ou trusts.

🔫 Cans - she/they, fae/faer - An excitable Inkling that fronts when we're feeling bodily energetic, which is a rarity! Loves physical activities, art with vivid colors, and vintage (read: 80s-90s aesthetics) clothing. Very loudly alloaro

💀 Minato - they/them, it/its, lu/lun, ona - I'm... I don't even know how to describe my species, I'm the Sea of the Soul in a human body. But I digress. I'm a Minato Arisato (Persona 5) fictive, and the Prism's holder for melancholy and other morbid emotions. I'm asexual and demiromantic. I like to think I'm more confident in myself than facets like Lucis and Eclipse. Each life is precious and short. Memento Mori.

🃏 Akira - ae/aer, he/him, they/them - Heya, I'm a Joker fictive and I've been here since we started advocating for ourselves in high school. I keep us grounded and try to appreciate the little things, like making good food and sitting outside in nice weather. I'm pretty good at shopping and cooking. There's another Akira here that we're median with, but he's outside the Prism so it's pretty funny when we end up talking to each other. If I could front when I wanted I'd be cooking all our meals with him

📻 Croissant/Rabbit - they/them, she/him - WAHAHAHA I FINALLY EXIST AGAIN - I mean uh. Ahem. Hiiii I'm a multifictive of Croissant cookie from CRK (original timeline) and a rlly obscure character from the Rabbits podcast. I come around when we're feeling relaxed & methodical or really into time travel stuff. I like theoretical physics, applied metaphysics, chaos theory, things like that! I think too much about time loops that's probably why I haven't been here in ages

💗 Nora - he/her - A quiet facet that takes the form of a transfem Nora Universe (SU) fictive. Equal parts passionate and uncertain, struggles to get a grasp on her identity and cares deeply for others. Good at socializing and masking.

🏔️ Madeline - she/it/they - A fictive from Celeste that fronts when we're higher energy - confident, stubborn, and always eager to do things & move forward. One of the most grounded in doing things for ourselves in outerworld, but doesn't show up very often.

🐾 Kitter / "Kit" - it/its, kit/kits, crit/critts - A fluffy creature with white fur & grey skin, akin to an anthropomorphic felid or canid. (y'know how ferrets or foxes feel like a combination of both? yeah that) It's semiverbal and fronts when we're low energy, overwhelmed, or feeling safe enough to completely relax. It likes being around people, soft textures, and nice music.

🏹 Link - fae/faer, they/he - I'm a Link/Hylian fictive that tries to find a balance between helping out others and staying grounded. I like to spend time outside and exist where I am, and I feel drawn toward nature magick. I like talking about my fictive & otherkin canons, Hylian & Sheikah lore & mythos, archery. I get sub-shifts depending on which life I'm feeling most like at the time, it's complicated but still me. I'm halfway between an exotrauma/phoenitrauma holder and a current-trauma holder.

🎲 Ouma - they/he/it/any - A Kokichi Ouma fictive that channels the desire to talk about our exotrauma and a blatant disdain toward common social structure. Flips between wanting everyone to listen to him and paranoia over rejection. A good few of us are exotrauma/phoenitrauma holders but he's most prominent

🌕 Rei - he/him, they/them, lu/lun - A Rei Kon (Beyblade) fictive that has a very grounded, specifically masculine iteration of our lunar identity. Either tigerkin or tigerhearted? Physically active but knows how to pace himself. Really mentally stable but very hard to get in front

🪽 Emily/Em - E/Em, it/they/she - A Seraph and Eclipse's parallel opposite; dedicated & caring, always trying to help others; a paranoia & OCD holder. Compassionate and tries hard to be likeable.

🍬 Bonnie - they/her - A Princess Bubblegum fictive and very recent member! Blunt & principled, fascinated by magic and calls it "science we don't understand yet". Friendly and confident, but easily offended.

✨ Twilight - she/they - I'm a twilight sparkle fictive!! I love research, spending time with my friends, magic & metaphysics, organizing things, and more!
