LUCY & THE JOANS!
Lucille Ball’s Collabs with Women Named Joan
Tumblr media
A remarkable number of talented women named Joan - and even a few memorable characters - were part of the Lucyverse.
Tumblr media
JOAN BANKS (1918-1989)
Joan Banks’ only credit with Lucille Ball was in “Fan Magazine Interview” (1954) in which she played reporter Eleanor Harris, assigned to do a story on Ricky Ricardo’s wife aka Lucy Ricardo. Here character name was a tribute to real-life writer Eleanor Harris.
Tumblr media
JOAN BLONDELL (1906-1979)
Joan Blondell (sister of Gloria Blondell) was active as a performer concurrently with Lucille Ball. On “The Lucy Show,” she played Joan Brenner, a character intended to fill the gap after the departure of Vivian Vance. But she did not get along with Lucille Ball, and after a shouting match in front of the studio audience, Blondell was dismissed after just two episodes.
Tumblr media
JOAN CAREY (1921-2015)
Joan Carey was born Joan Somerville Norbury on February 18, 1921 in Yorkshire, England. As a background performer and stand-in, she appeared on many episodes of “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show,” generally uncredited.
Tumblr media
JOAN CAULFIELD (1922-1991)
Joan Caulfield played the role of Liz Cooper on the television adaptation of “My Favorite Husband” (1953-55). Lucille Ball played the role on radio, but chose instead to play Lucy Ricardo. Caulfield and Ball were later both guest stars on “Bob Hope’s Leading Ladies” in 1966.
Tumblr media
JOAN CRAWFORD (1905-1977)
Joan Crawford was born Lucille Fay LeSueur. The Oscar-winning actress was mentioned on several episodes of “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show” before making a guest appearance in “Lucy and the Lost Star” in 1968. The episode was originally intended for Gloria Swanson, hence the non-specific title. The title “Lucy and Joan” had already been used when Joan Bennet guest-starred.  As with Bennett there was off-stage friction between Crawford and Ball.
Tumblr media
JOAN COLLINS (1933)
English-born actress Joan Collins hosted the “All Star Party for Lucille Ball” in 1984. She was also seen with Ball on “Bob Hope’s Leading Ladies” (1966), “Women I Love: Beautiful But Funny” (1982), “Night of 100 Stars II” (1985), and “Friar’s Club Tribute to Gene Kelly” (1985).
Tumblr media
JOAN CROSBY (1924-1992)
Joan Crosby was a journalist who wrote about Lucille Ball and was the one-time president of the Hollywood Women’s Press Club. As such, she played herself (above far right) in “Lucy Meets the Burtons” (1970).
Tumblr media
JOAN FONTAINE (1917-2013)
Born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland in Tokyo, she was the sister of Olivia de Havilland. She appeared with Lucy (and two other Joans) in “Bob Hope’s Leading Ladies” (1966). In 1959 she appeared on an episode of “Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse” hosted by Desi Arnaz.
Tumblr media
JOAN GRANT
Joan Grant is the character played by Lucille Ball in The Marines Fly High (1940). She runs a cocoa plantation in the South American jungle and allows a platoon of US Marines to stay there. Two of the Marines tussle over her affections. When she is kidnapped, the two Marines unite to save her.
Tumblr media
JOAN RIVERS (1933-2014)
Joan Alexandra Molinsky was born in New York City and became one of the top female comedians of all time. She co-starred with Lucille Ball on “Here’s Lucy” in “Lucy and Joan Rivers Do Jury Duty” (1973) where Rivers played Joan Reynolds. She was the first female guest-host of "The Tonight Show”  interviewing Lucille Ball three times.
Tumblr media
JOAN SWIFT (1933-2016)
Joan Swift was a frequent background player who had a few lines on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.”  Three of her characters were also named Joan. Her final screen appearance was in “Lucy Gets Lucky” (1975).
Tumblr media
During her long career in Hollywood, Lucille Ball also worked with or employed Joan Benny (Jack’s daughter), Joan Marshall (”Star Trek”), Joan O’Brien (”Shower of Stars”), Joan Fairfax (”Tonight Show with Jack Paar”), Joan Staley (”The Untouchables”), and Joan Woodbury (”There Goes My Girl”).
BONUS JOANS
Tumblr media
JOAN OF ARC (1412-1431)
In “Lucy the Skydiver” (1970), Lucy Carter hears the voices of strong women like Florence Nightingale and Joan of Arc, the Americanized name of the French saint and warrior Jeanne d'Arc.
Tumblr media
"I MARRIED JOAN” starring JOAN DAVIS
From 1952 to 1955 Joan Davis (1912-1961) starred in the sitcom “I Married Joan,” which was NBC’s answer to the popularity of “I Love Lucy.”  Comic actress Davis had appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1933 film Bunker Bean. Like Lucy, Davis used her own first name and was a scatterbrained housewife. Her husband (Jim Backus) was a judge. Both shows featured Mary Jane Croft, Bobby Jellison, Shirley Mitchell, Sandra Gould, Margie Liszt, Jerry Hausner, Elvia Allman, Myra Marsh, Phil Arnold, Dick Elliott, Robert Foulk, Joseph Kearns, Maxine Semon, Don Brodie, Hal March, Richard Reeves, Herb Vigran, Norman Varden, Harry Bartell, Kay Wiley, Charlotte Lawrence, Frank Nelson, Frank Gerstle, Vivvi Janis, George Neise, Ross Elliott, Verna Felton, Fritz Feld, Mabel Paige, Rolfe Sedan, Paul Dubov, Maurice Marsac, Peter Leeds, Shepard Menken, Strother Martin, Junie Ellis, Florence Bates, Sam Hearn, Mary Treen, and Hans Moebus. Like Lucille Ball, Joan Davis also served as Executive Producer of her series, which, like “I Love Lucy,” was filmed at General Service Studios.

2. Where Did They Find These White Girls?
A lot of reality shows only cast a handful of non-white contestants, and those limited spots often go to "the bitch" or "the villain" archetypes, so credit to Top Model for going against the grain. In this cycle, it's people of color who make up the majority of the cast, and it's the white girls who come off the most crazy and unlikable. That's progress, maybe!
For example, there's Liberty, who's from a super white and conservative small town in Idaho. Despite acknowledging she has a lot to learn about the world and politics, she has no problem spouting her uninformed views. I'm really curious to know what was going on in her pretty little head when she asks several women of color if they think there might be pros to having Donald Trump as president in the upcoming years. Spoiler: The black women do not. Second spoiler: The black women are correct.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Undeterred, Liberty outs herself as being pro-Trump because of his business experience. She expects that he will provide "some career opportunities" and improve the economy "a little bit." Yeah, that doesn't seem nearly worth the trade off for having an unstable, incompetent, and corrupt bigot at the helm.
Also, she's essentially telling these fellow models that having a president who views them as subhuman is acceptable if the economy improves. Let's be clear, Liberty, that there's only one wealthy, egomaniacal reality show host who is providing you with a career opportunity right now and it's not the president - it's Tyra Banks!
Then we've got the white girl who's a little too comfortable claiming she's down with brown-skinned people. As Maggie explains to the panel, she grew up in lily white Maine until she went to college in Oakland, which is a lot more diverse. She now goes by the nickname "White Homegirl" since she glommed on to black culture as soon as she was introduced to it.
Tumblr media
Oh boy. I don't doubt that some people of color jokingly called Maggie "white homegirl" in college, but if any of those people were really her friend, they would have told her not to embrace that monicker, as she looks completely foolish. Good for her for branching out, but she hasn't been "stripped" of her whiteness. I mean, with that dumb red hat, she still looks like your typical white hipster girl to me.
Finally, we have Liz, who is a mess and a half. She trips on her way into the room, which Tyra seems to love since it makes Liz "memorable," though she does inquire how inebriated Liz is. Liz insists she's sober.
Tumblr media
Flashback to Tyra doing the same thing:
Tumblr media
That's not to say LIz is sober sober like Tyra since she asks the judges to get drinks with her when the process is all over. Law still suspects she has a flask hiding in her cleavage. Nevertheless, he wants to create a brand just so she can be the face of it.
Tumblr media
That's THIS face, mind you. Who wouldn't want to buy what she's selling?
Before the photoshoot, Liz compares herself to both Alice in Wonderland and Courtney Love, which would imply she's mixing psychedelics and downers. Her sobriety is further questioned during the photoshoot when Drew actually has to tell Liz, "Do some where you look beautiful instead of just drunk." She survives the next cut anyway.
Then, at the fashion show, Liz stomps like this, practically stumbling into the audience:
Tumblr media
For whatever reason, Law still loves it. She survives the cut after that, as well.
Tumblr media
But not before stirring up some confusing drama where she cries at Khrystyana about… well, Liz doesn't even know what the point of her own rambling is, to be honest. That still doesn't stop from her from whining and even getting mad when Khrystyana tries to wrap up the conversation. "You're not letting me finish!" is a fine thing to say to someone who interrupts you, but if you haven't made a coherent point in several minutes, what are you trying to finish even?
"I'm just telling you my feelings," Liz says, and later adds, "I just, like, I just want you to know that, like, I just feel, like, really, like, crappy, you know?" I could die happy if I never heard the pejorative "snowflake" again, but there is something super off-putting about someone who thinks she has the right to hold another person hostage so she can babble about her vague insecurities. Every feeling you have doesn't need to be shared… and perhaps shouldn't when you can't even articulate it!
Bless Khrystyana for being maybe the one example of a non-crazy white person this cycle. She says that Liz seems to be under the impression that she confide in her because she thinks that they're "really close friends," but Khrystyana doesn't know why Liz would feel that way.
Tumblr media
She cutely shrugs it off, but we're going to need to Furonda to more bluntly express Khrystyana's point of view:
Tumblr media
If Liz were actually Khrystyana’s friend, she wouldn’t dare pull her into a sure-to-be-on-TV moment while she has cream all over her face.
One night in, and the whole house already sees Liz for the basket case that she is. If this is Liz sober, I'd hate to see how ridiculously she'd act on drugs.

#10 - Liz Woodbury
These look like two completely different people, it’s so bizarre. I’m not totally digging the first picture; the pose is weird, and she gives me actress vibes as opposed to model. Great facial expression though. The second photo is uncomfortable, because you can see how hard she’s sucking in her stomach. She literally looks like she stopped breathing and is struggling to hold it in. Face is tense, body language looks stifled. Also I hate how photoshopped her lower body is, but that’s not her fault.

id love to hear the order of how you think elimination is going to be!! But Id say Jeana is going to win or at last top 3, and the other to Kyla and Khrystyana
Umm, this cycle is a bit more difficult to read than last cycle. I remember I knew within seconds of seeing Tatiana and India’s interviews that they would be the final two, but I didn’t get any such vibes this time. The only thing that was painfully obvious was that Maggie would be the first one eliminated (none of the judges liked her, she had no real story for reality tv, and the “white homegirl” thing was such bs).
If I had to guess how it’d go down, it’d be something like this (though it’s probably horribly off):
Khrystyana - I go back and forth on her. There was a moment in this episode where I felt she was getting the Allison edit, but she’s literally the only contestant I can see winning. The winners are always obvious, and Khrystyana seems the obvious choice to me given she’s not stick-thin and she’s over 30, and also shows modeling potential.
Kyla - Her edit is just the right mix of boring and interesting to make her the obvious runner-up. I think her modeling abilities will carry her far, and the judges will use her to justify whoever they want to win, as Kyla is too much of a typical model to represent this cycle as its winner.
Rio - Seems to represent just about everything they want from this cycle, so I think she’s a possible candidate for the win in the eyes of the judges. However, I get the vibe that she cracks under pressure. Top 3 seems about right for her edit to me, so far.
Jeana - I think she’s the fake-out frontrunner. The one that’s meant to distract us from the real winner that is hiding in plain sight. Top 4 is usually the shocker elimination, so I think it’ll be her.
Christina - I think she’ll wind up being this cycle’s villain. She’s mild-mannered for now, but as the weeks go on she’ll definitely crack. Plus, she’s a decent model so the judges will be able to use that as reason to keep her around.
Erin - I think she’ll go far purely based on her age, as it’s sure to eventually cause drama in the house (Baby Boomers tend not to get along with Millennials or iGen for extended periods of time).
Coura - Seems like the frontrunner right now, but I guarantee that’ll change. She doesn’t have a reality tv personality, and she doesn’t match the message they’re trying to send this cycle. Too much of a legit model for this cycle.
Liz - At one point I would have said that Liz would win, but that walk…lol. She has the personality they’re looking for, which will keep her on for a good while, but eventually the judges are going to crack down on her. She’ll probably be in the bottom 2 a few weeks in a row.
Sandra - I think Sandra could land here, or maybe switch spots with Erin. She seems like she’ll have a few good reality tv moments, but none of the judges seem to be taking her seriously as a model. If her edit stays as bland as it is now, she’ll probably land here, but if she become the source of drama she’ll probably be more where Erin is on my prediction.
Shanice - She’s one of the ones I’m least sure about. The judges seem to love her for whatever reason, but I also get the feeling that they’ll cut her the second they don’t like something she does.
Liberty - The Trump supporter that they obviously cast to have a feud with activist Kyla. I assume they’ll keep her for a bit for the drama, but then promptly eliminate her because they don’t want to risk her becoming the likable villain. They’ll probably disguise her elimination as her being too “bland” or whatever, though.
Rhiyan - Who? No, but really, her edit is non-existent. I’ll be shocked if she makes it further than this.
Brendi K. - It seems like clients love her, but the show refuses to give her any positive attention, so she’s probably an early out.
Ivana - She’s super insecure and the show is throwing it in our faces. I don’t think they’re likely to give her many more chances.
Maggie - Obviously this already happened, but I would have guessed her as first out even before this episode because her edit was so dry.
Let me know your thoughts on this prediction, everyone!

ANTM Cycle 24 Teases ‘Deeply Rooted Psychological Warfare’
“Deeply rooted psychological warfare,” exclaims a contestant in the new promo clip. Now, that’s what I want in my reality competition programs. Contestants stressing out and on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Let’s just hope America’s Next Top Model Cycle 24 delivers in that department.
After sitting out Cycle 23 and letting Rita Ora take over the reins, Tyra Banks returns to hosting duties.…

#9 - Liz Woodbury
Mmmm...nope. I appreciate that Liz is trying to be creative with her pose, but the spread legs are incredibly inappropriate for the concept. If the pregnancy belly were removed and this was a normal shot, I think I would have liked it a lot, but it’s so awkward with the bump. I don’t like what her hand is doing on the belly, it looks kind of strange. One thing I do like is her face, I think she looks really cute. It doesn’t really connect with the pregnancy though.

Audio: Prep School CEO Threatens Basketball Player in Expletive-Laden Rant
Mike Woodbury, the director of Florida prep school Nation Christian Academy, was caught on tape launching an invective-laced tirade against Marvens Petion, a basketball player who came over from Haiti at the age of 15, going so far as to imply he'd alter his transcripts and send the player back to Haiti.
Woodbury, who also serves as CEO of the Port St. Lucie school, had taken Petion into his home along with several other players. The following audio is a snippet from a conversation that Woodbury claims occurred on October 17 at his home and lasted 35 minutes. It was turned in by Petion's current coach at West Oaks:
“Just get out of my face," Woodbury is heard snarling on the tape. "Take your broke asses—I’ll say it again—your broke asses back to the garage. I don’t want to hear from you. The bottom line... get the fuck out. Just walk the fuck out. I don’t give a shit. I control transcripts. I control where you go next. It could be back to Haiti, motherfucker. That’s how easy it is for me.”
“Now I control everything,” he later added. “I just want you to really know that. I’m going to fuck you in your ass next time you’re out of line. I’m going to take everything from you. I’m going to end everything you’ve ever had.”
Petion told sports network Stadium the conversation was a result of him and another teammate coming across a "damaging conversation" between Woodbury and another woman that concerned him enough that he asked the head of the school, Liz Bell, for his release from the school.
“I’ve already had two schools close down on me,” said Petion, who previously attended a pair of prep schools in Kansas. “I was afraid this one would be shut down also, so I wanted to get out of there.”
In response, in the statement embedded below as well as in an interview with Stadium, Woodbury leveled a host of allegations again Petion, including that Petion attempted to extort school officials, all of which Petion denied. He has since transferred to West Oaks Academy, also in Florida.
Petion told Stadium he received his transcripts on Tuesday, and was shocked to see that his GPA was lowered to a 1.4, even though he had a B-average. Despite Woodbury's claims that he "control[s] the transcripts," and that he would "take everything" from Petion, Bell described the difference as an "error in calculation."
As the story began to gain traction Wednesday, Woodbury released a statement on Twitter—eschewing the screenshot of the Notes app maneuver for the classic Old Person Takes a Picture of Their Computer Screen move—apologizing for the language used, but stopped short of apologizing for the nature of the conversation. It seems he doubled down:
(Update: the Twitter account has since been protected, so here is the image of the statement contained in the tweet)
Tumblr media
There are a lot of dots to connect in this story, which is probably due to A.) the shady nature of these prep schools in the first place, and B.) the he said/he said nature of the allegations being tossed around. But what we do have now is what Woodbury said, and it's pretty hard to characterize the conversation as making the student "aware that his criminal behavior would risk him being sent" back home when Woodbury made perfectly clear that he controlled everything. Especially seeing as how Woodbury—who, again, is the president of the school—says in the tape "I'm going to end everything you've ever had." Because that sounds pretty clearly like a threat.
Stadium followed up with Woodbury, asking him if he regretted anything about the exchange. “No. Fuck, no,” Woodbury said. “Yes and no. I regret the fact I tried to be a father figure. It hurts my heart.”

Cycle 24 Call Out Order Averages
1. Jeana: 2,79
2. Khrystyana: 3,5
3. Liberty: 4,71
4. Kyla: 5,64
5. Brendi K: 6
6. Shanice: 6,08
7. Christina: 6,25
7. Rio: 6,25
9. Liz: 6,5
10. Erin: 7,27
11. Sandra: 7,625
12. Coura: 7,8
13. Maggie: 8
14. Rhiyan: 8,25
15. Ivana: 13,33
I didn’t include my makeovers call out order to make these averages, because it didn’t affect much the final order. These averages pretty much reflect my opinion about the cycle 24 cast photo-wise. Christina is being hurt by her rocky start, while Kyla placed higher than I thought obviously because of how far she has come as well as Rio having high call outs in the beginning before completely nosediving about halfway through the competition. Jeana totally is dominating, followed by Khrystyana and Liberty, and poor Ivana lands at the rock bottom because of not having the time to take a single good photo.
