Any models from antm/ausntm that you felt lacked potential but ended up impressing you throughout their run?
Hm, good question. I feel like early ANTM had a lot of front runners who surprised me, Mercedes from Cycle 2 was someone I thought looked sweet, but didn’t see a model, but she turned it out. Joanie from Cycle 6 is another one, like Tyra said in casting she doesn’t give much in person, but she knows how to model, and serves an incredible photo. I think Jennifer from Cycle 13 is another, and Anslee from Cycle 14 is someone I always forget, never thought looked like a model, but had some shining moments that showed something I never saw. From some of the newer seasons Shanice from Cycle 24 had a series of shots that shut me up, even though I was doubting her hard pre-season and up to that point. ANTM has a lot to be honest of these, so I’m sure there are more I am just missing.
As for from AusNTM, I think one that jumps out is Adele from Cycle 5. Never really saw model initially, and in the first few weeks she gave mediocre, but at a certain point she just went into high gear, and gave some sensational shots. Really found her niche that just worked. Another obvious one is Kathryn from Cycle 6 too, absolutely nothing special in person, but one of the most photographic models in NTM history. A real contender for my favourite portfolio ever.

6. Shanice’s Parachute Shot
Shanice was the only girl who fully owned this photoshoot. Her face is gorgeous in profile and I love her fiercely determined skyward gaze. The fluid pose is dynamic and she managed to bring some shape to that metallic dress. This was Shanice at her best!

1. The Shoe Smirk
If Khrystyana has a super power - other than being an awesome model, obviously - it would be that she can hear a tear rolling down someone’s cheek from a mile away. We’ve seen her comforting pretty much everyone in the house when they cry, and crying is the #1 hobby in the model mansion
She’s even there to comfort Jeana, who she hasn’t been getting along with lately, when she hears her crying. It’s beyond me how Khrystyana could Jeana crying in a bathroom downstairs when she’s upstairs in bed, but let’s just say she’s “blessed” - you know, in the same way that Law is when he can sense that Kyla needs a dick in her.
Jeana appreciates having a shoulder to cry on - we know that her bestie Rio can’t comfort her in that way because she has metaphorical spikes on her shoulder. Literal ones at times, too.
Tumblr media
In talking to Khrystyana, Jeana gets her confidence back, only to lose her grit again on the set of the music video. For the first scene, Director X wants all the ladies to look “bored” at a dinner party, which is a weird brief during PERSONALITY WEEK, but after complaining that her personality isn’t as effervescent as the other models, you’d think this would be Jeana’s chance to shine!
Nevertheless, Director X thinks Jeana is terrible at being boring (does that mean she’s accidentally being entertaining?) all the while complimenting how the other women, aside from Rio, are doing. Apparently, portraying boredom means spilling wine, throwing grapes, dropping broccoli, fanning yourself and combing your hair with a fork. Really that sounds more like bad manners to me, but okay.
Tumblr media
Oh, and also eating feathers? Did you all catch Khrystyana’s hilarious spit take when Tyra surprisingly drops by? Why were those in her mouth in the first place.
For the record, I think Jeana does fine in the video. She’s far better than Rio and a discernible amount better than Shanice. Between takes, Khrystyana tries to make pleasantries with Jeana, but she gives her the cold shoulder. That’s the last time Khrystyana will be comforting her!
During her solo moment, Khrystyana’s heel breaks! It’s hella dramatic because’s Jeana initial reaction is a smirk!
It sure looks an “I’m secretly happy because someone else screwed up” face, but the truth of the matter is that’s probably not the immediate face she made since there’s no way there was a camera was on Khrystyana AND Director X giving instructions AND Jeana standing on the sidelines just standing and watching. That’s not how reality television works.
Shanice asks if Khrystyana is okay, and Khrystyana says she knows Shanice was concerned since she saw her facial reaction when it happened. Wait, how many other people’s faces was she able to assess as she’s tumbling to the ground?
I stan for Khrystyana, though, so if she says Jeana made the face, I believe that Jeana made the face. Jeana wants this prize badly, so of course I can see her momentarily relieved that someone else could go home.
Tumblr media
Oh and speaking of prize, Jeana’s latest bit of spilled tea (thanks for the heads-up @thev3rgeofobscene) is that they had no idea what the prize was for most of the cycle. No wonder she hadn’t been planning her avatar for weeks!
Because Khrystyana wants to inspire people to stand up for themselves, she confronts Jeana about her facial reaction. Jeana responds, “I would never wish that a girlSLASH a model in stripper type heels would break their shoe. Like, it hurt. I’m not that kind of girl.” Jeana knows what it’s like to hurt - she’s had sand in her eye and a tent pole to her back. In all honesty, the number of details in this statement makes you have to wonder if Jeana WOULD root for her competition to fall in shorter footwear, or just fail in some other non-painful way.
Somehow, the drama’s not over, y’all. While Khrystyana and Shanice film a pillow fight scene, Jeana suddenly crawls in and starts partaking. The other girls don’t understand how she can just enter the scene with permission, but I’m immediately suspicious of of this allegation - you think Director X is just going to let an extra change his scene? HE IS 41-YEARS-OLD, he would speak up.
At panel, the judges diss Jeana’s performance. Law wants to see Jeana blossom beyond the bald girl, saying that Ashley and Tyra each evolved into celebrities beyond their initial identity. Jeana’s just starting though, so I don’t think her lack of celebrity status at this point should be held against her. Let her get more comfortable with the bald thing and see where she can take it.
When it’s Shanice’s turn, she decides to throw Jeana further under the bus, bringing up the fact that Jeana joined their scene without warning. At this point, Director X acknowledges that it was his call and he wanted to add all the girls to the scene, except that Rio and Kyla were already out of their costumes. See! There was a perfectly valid explanation.
Shanice also insists that Jeana was pushing her and Khrystyana too roughly, so Jeana defends herself to say that she was just getting into character. That should have been her avatar’s gimmick. Boring by day, shover my night.
Tyra doesn’t want to hear about it, though, and tells them to sort out this fight at home. Normally, Tyra loves hearing about the interpersonal drama, but she can already tell this argument is so petty and dull that it doesn’t warrant any further time.
Tumblr media
Backstage, Khrystyana tries to address the moment again and Jeana simply doesn’t want to talk about it anymore. Rather than arguing, she burrows under a duvet. It’s probably her smartest pose yet!
Tumblr media
Jeana goes home because the judges think she needs to be more than just a bald girl. Hopefully she snagged that awesome Republican mom wig they put her in at the video shoot. She could launch a whole new career with this look:

#4 – Shanice
While Shanice’s hair looks incredible here, her face doesn’t match that level. We have flared nostrils again, and her jawline looks awful here. This is not her best angle, and the tension in her lips doesn’t help. The tiny flash of teeth is just distracting. I have no clue how Shanice survived with this shot, as there is no justification for producing something this weak so late in the show.

out of curiosity, what was your favourite picture from cycle 24 and has your opinion changed? back when i was reading your old commentary i realised that the post had gotten removed and i've been wondering what it was 😬
I think by the looks of things it was Sandra's Vulnerable photo (Week 7), and I do still love that shot, even if the whole hands touching them has a slight weirder vibe in 2022 than it did back then. Ultimately still not a huge fan of most of Cycle 24 photoshoots, so much wasted potential across the board.
I think Liberty's post-makeover video would now be a contender for number 1, but I actually think Shanice's Parachute shot might actually be my favourite. She is the only one for me who produced a good shot from that shoot, and I had been so excited about it all season from when I saw it in the promos. It was her shining moment on the show.

id love to hear the order of how you think elimination is going to be!! But Id say Jeana is going to win or at last top 3, and the other to Kyla and Khrystyana
Umm, this cycle is a bit more difficult to read than last cycle. I remember I knew within seconds of seeing Tatiana and India’s interviews that they would be the final two, but I didn’t get any such vibes this time. The only thing that was painfully obvious was that Maggie would be the first one eliminated (none of the judges liked her, she had no real story for reality tv, and the “white homegirl” thing was such bs).
If I had to guess how it’d go down, it’d be something like this (though it’s probably horribly off):
Khrystyana - I go back and forth on her. There was a moment in this episode where I felt she was getting the Allison edit, but she’s literally the only contestant I can see winning. The winners are always obvious, and Khrystyana seems the obvious choice to me given she’s not stick-thin and she’s over 30, and also shows modeling potential.
Kyla - Her edit is just the right mix of boring and interesting to make her the obvious runner-up. I think her modeling abilities will carry her far, and the judges will use her to justify whoever they want to win, as Kyla is too much of a typical model to represent this cycle as its winner.
Rio - Seems to represent just about everything they want from this cycle, so I think she’s a possible candidate for the win in the eyes of the judges. However, I get the vibe that she cracks under pressure. Top 3 seems about right for her edit to me, so far.
Jeana - I think she’s the fake-out frontrunner. The one that’s meant to distract us from the real winner that is hiding in plain sight. Top 4 is usually the shocker elimination, so I think it’ll be her.
Christina - I think she’ll wind up being this cycle’s villain. She’s mild-mannered for now, but as the weeks go on she’ll definitely crack. Plus, she’s a decent model so the judges will be able to use that as reason to keep her around.
Erin - I think she’ll go far purely based on her age, as it’s sure to eventually cause drama in the house (Baby Boomers tend not to get along with Millennials or iGen for extended periods of time).
Coura - Seems like the frontrunner right now, but I guarantee that’ll change. She doesn’t have a reality tv personality, and she doesn’t match the message they’re trying to send this cycle. Too much of a legit model for this cycle.
Liz - At one point I would have said that Liz would win, but that walk…lol. She has the personality they’re looking for, which will keep her on for a good while, but eventually the judges are going to crack down on her. She’ll probably be in the bottom 2 a few weeks in a row.
Sandra - I think Sandra could land here, or maybe switch spots with Erin. She seems like she’ll have a few good reality tv moments, but none of the judges seem to be taking her seriously as a model. If her edit stays as bland as it is now, she’ll probably land here, but if she become the source of drama she’ll probably be more where Erin is on my prediction.
Shanice - She’s one of the ones I’m least sure about. The judges seem to love her for whatever reason, but I also get the feeling that they’ll cut her the second they don’t like something she does.
Liberty - The Trump supporter that they obviously cast to have a feud with activist Kyla. I assume they’ll keep her for a bit for the drama, but then promptly eliminate her because they don’t want to risk her becoming the likable villain. They’ll probably disguise her elimination as her being too “bland” or whatever, though.
Rhiyan - Who? No, but really, her edit is non-existent. I’ll be shocked if she makes it further than this.
Brendi K. - It seems like clients love her, but the show refuses to give her any positive attention, so she’s probably an early out.
Ivana - She’s super insecure and the show is throwing it in our faces. I don’t think they’re likely to give her many more chances.
Maggie - Obviously this already happened, but I would have guessed her as first out even before this episode because her edit was so dry.
Let me know your thoughts on this prediction, everyone!

07. Shanice
Shanice just sort of fades away in this picture. This is by no mean a disastrous picture of her but there’s nothing that really stands out. She didn’t brought any variation from her previous work by using this same chin up angle we saw so many times from her, and the slightly vacant face doesn’t help either. Her eyes are not as dead as they used to, but I found them to be a bit too squinty, while her mouth seems too much tense. And the body left to be desired as there is a perceptible stifness about the way it’s positionned. The only positive is her perfectly extended neck, which as the judges pointed out might be because of the fact she was trying to avoid the tarentula as much as possible. I think Tyra just found her solution to fight against no neck monsters !
