part 2
pairing: bones x reader
summary: you are captain pike’s daughter and have become inseparable from the enterprise crew, especially jim kirk and leonard mccoy... so when your terrible ex makes a reappearance right when you’re discovering your deeper feelings for bones, only chaos and heartache could ensue
word count: 5380
warnings: swearing, drinking
notes: my first time posting a fic, hope y’all like it! this took me a full month longer to write than I anticipated, and I may be writing this whole fic from bones’ perspective as well...
You never get as much rest during shore leave as your crewmates. While they’re off, free to do whatever they wish with their time, you have to spend a few hours each day back on the docked Enterprise tending to the plant life in the ship’s greenhouses. Jim always insists that you, as a senior science officer, have the authority to pawn off the task to one of your subordinates, but you take pride in doing the work yourself. And lately... well... lately you’re glad for the time alone. For the time away from a certain doctor.
You met Jim and Bones at the Academy, when they were cadets and you were an instructor’s assistant while your ship was on leave. The three of you became thick as thieves in the blink of an eye. Even though your friend group has grown since then, the bond you three share is special. So, a couple months back, when you realized that your feelings for one of your best friends had deepened into something... else... you panicked.
The last time you opened yourself up to feelings was during your own time at the Academy, when you dated a man for four years only to find out he was using you for your connection to your father to get ahead in his career and was fucking your roommate behind your back the whole time. While you know that Bones would never do something like that, the experience has left you scared to be vulnerable again. And Bones is one of your best friends. You aren’t about to ruin your friendship by putting him in the awkward position of having to turn you down.
So you’ve taken to spending more time dedicating yourself to your duties. Here, among the plants, no one will know if you while away the hours daydreaming about the way Bones’ hands would feel cupping your face, how solid his chest would feel against yours, how soft his lips would be...
You snap out of today’s daydreams at the sound of the doors to the greenhouses whooshing open. You look up to see Uhura and Sulu stroll in, the latter looking especially triumphant.
“See? I told you she’d be here,” Sulu says.
You busy yourself with checking each plant’s water level, the task you were doing before your mind wandered. “Of course I’m here. Plants don’t stop living just because everyone else is on leave.”
“C’mon Pike, you can try to deceive the others but you can’t lie to us. We know why you’re really here,” Uhura says.
You mentally curse yourself, regretting a night not too long ago when you, Sulu, and Uhura had gotten drunk and the truth of your feelings for Bones came spilling out of you before you could stop yourself. Since then, they refused to leave you in peace.
“You know, he’s still one of your best friends,” Uhura continues. “He’ll be more suspicious the more you push him away.”
“I’m not pushing him away,” you say quickly, eyes snapping up from the Capellan flower you’re inspecting.
“So then you won’t object to coming out with everyone tonight?” Sulu asks. “Kirk found a new nightclub he thinks we’ll all love and he wants us all to go.”
You swallow.
“I bet if McCoy sees you in something hot it will force him to be much more obvious about the feelings he definitely has for you,” Uhura insists.
“Enough, guys.” You sigh. “I know you want to be helpful, but filling me with false hope isn’t going to work. How many times do I have to say that before you understand?”
Sulu and Uhura share a look, shoulders dropping in defeat.
“Fine,” Sulu says. “Then come out for the rest of us. We care about you and want us all to have some fun.”
You look between Sulu and Uhura, both their eyes wide with hope. You sigh, a smile on the edge of your lips.
“Okay. For you guys.”
Sulu and Uhura cheer.
“Now get out of my greenhouse,” you order, turning back to the plants. “I’ve still got work to do.”
“No you don’t.” Sulu slides up to you, taking the tricorder out of your hands. “I’ll finish up for you. You go with Uhura to get ready for tonight.”
Before you can protest, Uhura grabs you by the arm and drags you out of the greenhouses, off the ship, and across the station to your accommodations. Once you’re back in your assigned room, Uhura dives into your closet. All you can do is sit on the edge of your bed as articles of clothing fly all around you. At one point you have to duck so as not to be hit by one of your hangers. The hurricane of fabric comes to a halt as Uhura unearths a black, figure-hugging, high neck, sleeveless dress with a slit on the side that goes dangerously high.
“No,” you say instantly.
Uhura smiles wickedly. “Yes.”
“No, Nyota–” you start, but Uhura just tosses the dress at you, shoving the rejected garments back into your closet.
“You’ve got two hours to get ready. Meet me in the lobby and we’ll walk over to the club together. If you come down wearing anything but that dress, I am making you turn around and come right back up here to change,” Uhura orders, slipping out of your room before you can voice another protest.
You lay the dress out on your bed. You haven’t worn something like this in a long time, but your friend can be exceedingly stubborn so you decide to let her get her wish.
After a quick shower, you slip on the dress. You put on minimal makeup and decide to leave your hair down, a welcome change from the braided updo you usually do for work. A glance at the clock tells you it’s about time to meet Uhura, so you put on a pair of low heels that match your dress and head out the door.
You meet up with Uhura in the building lobby. She whistles when she sees you.
“That dress looked good on the hanger, but you do it true justice.”
You giggle. “Never stop flirting with me, Nyota. And you don’t look too bad yourself.”
“Oh, I know.” Uhura strikes a pose, showing off her midnight blue dress that seems to shimmer in the low light. She then links arms with you, leaning in. “I’m serious about how good this dress looks on you, but it would look even better on McCoy’s floor.”
You feel heat rise to your cheeks. “Nyota!”
“What? If he’s not gonna start making moves, I’ve gotta start making moves for him.”
You shake your head. “Not funny. Besides, that is the cheesiest pickup line you could’ve chosen.”
The nightclub isn’t too far from the hotel Starfleet procured for the crew’s shore leave accommodations. By the time you and Uhura arrive, the rest of your friends are already a few drinks deep.
“There you two are! I was about to send a search party!” Jim calls, waving you both over to the bar. Your stomach does a flip the moment you see Bones. The easy smile he shoots you as you approach used to bring you platonic comfort, but now it sets every one of your nerves on fire.
“Woah, darlin’. You look incredible,” Bones says as you and Uhura join the group.
Uhura shoots you a knowing smile. “I know, doesn’t she?”
You ignore Uhura, turning to Bones. “Thank you. Uhura picked it out.”
Jim cuts in, handing you and Uhura a shot. “C’mon!” he exclaims. “Let’s dance!”
You barely have enough time to down the drink and place the glass back on the bar before Jim is dragging you onto the dancefloor. For the next hour you choose to forget all your worries, drinking and dancing with Jim, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov. You eventually manage to escape back to the bar, joining Bones and Spock. Bones chuckles as you collapse onto a stool.
“Worn out already?” he teases, flagging down the bartender and motioning for a glass of water.
“It’s been a while since I broke out my dancing shoes,” you reply. “But Jim just doesn’t stop. Where does he get the stamina?”
“I do not know,” Spock says.
Bones wordlessly passes you the water. You take it, nerves tingling at the brush of your fingers against his. The alcohol in your system has made you less cautious, so you beam at him.
“Thank you,” you say, taking a sip of water. “You’re always taking care of me.”
You think you see him blush, but you’re sure it’s just the flashing lights playing tricks. Jim and Scotty bound over to the group, gasping for breath.
“You abandoning us already, Pike?” Jim asks, ordering himself another drink.
“Just need a break, is all. Doctor’s orders,” you reply, shooting Bones a begging look.
“That’s right, Jim,” Bones jumps in. “Can’t have one of our best pass out on the dancefloor.”
“Then I guess you’ll have to take her place,” Jim says matter-of-factly.
“Jim, I don’t–” Bones starts, but it’s too late. Jim grabs him by the arm and drags him onto the dancefloor. Within seconds they’re both swallowed up by the crowd.
“Ach, the poor doctor never stood a chance,” Scotty says, shaking his head before turning to you. “Another drink, lass?”
You nod, downing the rest of your water and following it with the shot Scotty hands you. You haven’t felt this warm, this loose in ages, so much so that when your ex-boyfriend and ex-roommate walk into the club it takes a moment for your brain to register it. The second your brain catches up with what your eyes are seeing, you tense up, blood running cold. You feel Spock stiffen beside you. You guess he saw them enter too. Besides Jim and Bones, Spock is the only person who knows about your ex. He was there, after all, studying at the Academy beside you during the whole love affair.
Scotty notices the sudden tension, following both your gazes to see your ex.
“Who’s that?” Scotty asks.
“No one,” you say quickly, turning your back to the door.
But it’s too late. You’re sure he spotted you and before long you hear a throat being cleared behind you. You turn around slowly to see your ex, your backstabbing roommate by his side.
“Long time, no see,” your ex says, his gaze sweeping over you. You say nothing, and neither does Spock, who is scowling at your ex. Scotty takes the scene in before addressing the newcomers.
“My name’s Montgomery Scott. My friends call me Scotty. You are?”
“Matthew Williams. This is my fiancée, Anja Antos.”
You feel like you’re going to throw up.
“It’s nice to meet you, Scotty,” Matthew continues.
“Hold on now, laddie. I said my friends call me Scotty. And it seems like my two friends here don’t care for either of you too much.”
“Oh, that’s just a little grudge they’re holding onto from our Academy days.” Matthew chuckles. “Nothing serious.”
“What are you doing here?” you ask, finding your voice again.
Matthew turns his gaze to you. “Our ship’s on shore leave, and we’re out to celebrate. Anja just passed her bridge officer’s test. She’ll be joining me up on the bridge, where all the action is. You’re still working with plants, right Pike? I’m sure that can be exciting too.”
Before you can defend yourself, Spock says, “Dr. Pike is third in command of the Enterprise.”
You see Matthew’s jaw clench. And if looks could kill, the one Anja shoots you certainly would incinerate you on the spot.
“I see we have much more to catch up on than we thought,” Anja says.
“Why don’t you join us?” Matthew asks. “We can grab some drinks and find an empty booth somewhere to continue chatting.”
You can’t think of anything you want to do less than spend more time with Matthew and Anja, but, as if possessed, you find yourself accepting Matthew’s offer. Before you know it, the three of you are situated in a booth, the couple on one side, you on the other.
“So, you’re engaged,” you say, breaking the silence.
Anja and Matthew smile at each other.
“I finally got him to propose,” Anja says, leaning into Matthew. “It’s nice, knowing you have a partner who’s fully committed to you. I’m sure you’ll find someone who can make you feel that way too.”
“You assume I’m single?”
“You’re not?”
You take a sip of your drink. “That’s really none of your business.”
“So,” Matthew cuts in. “Second officer of the Enterprise. When’d you get the promotion?”
You think about your response for a moment. You’re usually not one for showing off your achievements, but you remember how badly Matthew wanted to command his own ship and how much he hurt you when you wouldn’t help him the way he wanted. So fuck him.
“A few years back,” you say. “When my father was still in command of the Enterprise. Starfleet’s offered me my own ship a couple times since then, but I keep turning them down.”
You see anger flash in Matthew’s eyes. You definitely got to him. Before you can say anything else, Jim and Bones plop into the seats beside you.
“There you are. We were wondering where you’d disappeared to.” Jim grins at you, before turning to the other half of the table. “Nice to meet you. I’m Jim Kirk, he’s Leonard McCoy. You are?”
“Matthew Williams and Anja Antos,” Matthew replies. Anja’s eyes rake over Jim and Bones.
“Matthew and Anja,” Jim repeats, turning back to you. “That Matthew and Anja?”
You give a slight nod and instantly both Jim and Bones throw their arms across the back of your seat, scooching closer to you, as if they coordinated it beforehand.
“We’ve heard lots about you, Matthew,” Bones says, barely concealing his distaste. “About you both.”
“And how do you two know Pike?” Anja asks
“We’re her boyfriends,” Jim says.
You choke on your drink.
“I mean, we’re also coworkers,” Jim continues. “I’m the captain of the Enterprise, McCoy’s the CMO, and Pike’s one of my science officers. But I feel like the whole relationship thing supersedes all that.”
Time seems to slow as your mind calculates both outcomes to this situation. Either you correct Jim’s lie and are forced to endure Anja and Matthew’s gloating as they hold your perpetual singleness over your head. Or... Or you lean into the lie, transform your strong friendships into a three-way relationship, and in the process allow yourself to let your guard down, wear your feelings for Bones on your sleeve without fear of reproach.
So you lean into the lie, and against Bones’ chest. Your hand reaches out towards Jim, taking his hand in yours, fingers curling together. Bones drapes his arm around your shoulders, holding you close. You look over to see Matthew and Anja taking the scene in.
“You’re both her boyfriends?” Matthew asks incredulously.
“Yep,” Bones replies.
“So how’d you all end up together?” Anya asks challengingly.
“Oh, honey, why don’t you tell them?” Jim turns to you.
“Yeah, you tell the story best,” Bones adds.
You realize they’re letting you set the stage as a way to make up for blind-siding you. You decide to start with the truth.
“We all met at the Academy. Jim and Leonard were cadets and I was an instructor’s assistant. We became fast friends.”
“And... what? You fell into a relationship?” Matthew asks.
“No, no, not all at once,” you say, gaining confidence. “It started with me and Jim. He was a charmer, swept me off my feet. Nobody knows how to make me laugh like Jim does. And it was just the two of us for a while, until one day I woke up and realized I’d fallen in love with Leonard.”
The words you’ve been too scared to even think just spill out of you. You look at Bones to see him smiling at you and you have to remind yourself that none of this is real. That his happiness at your declaration is a fabrication.
“In hindsight, I should’ve seen it coming,” you continue, eyes still on Bones. “Loving Leonard is like breathing, always there but you’re never aware of it unless you concentrate hard enough.” You shoot Matthew and Anya a look. “I told Jim immediately because I’m not a cheater. To my surprise he said he was willing to share, providing Leonard felt the same.”
“And you two are happy with sharing?” Matthew asks.
“We’re happy with any bit of love we can get from her. She’s an incredible woman.” Jim grins.
“If it were up to us,” Bones says, “we’d be married already.”
Your stomach flips, mind racing with images of you and Bones as a married couple. Waking up next to him every morning, dropping by the medbay just because, him visiting you in the greenhouses because he misses you, sharing his last name...
You can feel his eyes on you, but you stop yourself from looking at him again, afraid that he’ll see beyond the performance, straight into your heart. Instead, you glance at Matthew and Anja. They are shooting each other knowing looks.
“Baby,” Anja says, addressing Matthew. “I need a new drink.”
“Of course,” Matthew replies, turning to the other half of the table. “If you’ll excuse us for a moment.”
As Matthew and Anja move towards the bar, Jim whispers, “I don’t think they fully bought it.”
“Of course they didn’t buy it,” you whisper back. “They were never gonna buy me having two partners. They still think no one would associate themselves with me of their own free will.”
“They’ll buy it if you kiss one of us.”
You widen your eyes at Jim. “If I what?”
You are suddenly acutely aware of the fact you’re still leaning against Bones.
“If you’re worried about our willingness, darlin’, don’t be,” Bones says. “Jim and I got you into this mess and we’re gonna get you out of it. The last thing we want is for those two assholes to think they’ve one-upped you.”
You look between Jim and Bones, both of them watching and waiting for you to act. Once again, your analytical mind processes the two possible scenarios. If you pick Jim, then maybe you can get out of this with a little less heartbreak. But if you pick Bones... well... this could be your only chance to know what it would be like to kiss him.
You tilt your face up and press your lips against Bones’. You focus on how soft his lips feel against yours, committing the sensation to memory. You let yourself pretend, for a moment, that this is a real kiss. That the gentle hand Bones places against your cheek and the parting of his lips to deepen the kiss are because he wants you too, not because he’s helping you get back at your shitty ex and his shitty fiancée.
The kiss ends from a need for oxygen more than anything else. You both take in air, breaths mingling in the space between you, but you don’t pull away and neither does Bones. Your heart is beating so fast, so loud you bet the whole club can hear it over the thumping music.
“Did they see?” you finally murmur.
“Yeah, they saw,” Jim confirms.
You pull away from Bones, heart and head still spinning.
“I, uh... I think I need some air,” you say.
Jim rises to let you out of the booth, retaking his seat once you’re standing. Before you slip away, you lean down and press a kiss against Jim’s cheek.
“What was that for?” he asks.
“I’ve allegedly got two boyfriends, don’t I?” you reply.
You hear Jim chuckle behind you as you make your way out of the club. Once outside, you close your eyes and take in deep breaths of the filtered space station air, emptying your mind of everything that just happened because if you think about it for too long you know you’ll start to spiral. Inevitably, though, your thoughts start to creep back in.
You curse the part of you that loses all semblance of reason when Matthew and Anja are around. If you had a better handle on your emotions, you wouldn’t end up in situations like these, the pair of them digging more knives into your already fractured being. And you wouldn’t have to rely on Jim and Bones to bail you out.
Oh god. Bones.
Your fingers brush against your lips. You were so flustered after the kiss you forgot to take in his expression, couldn’t remember if he’d been happy or disappointed. Then you remind yourself it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter that it was the most perfect kiss, soft and sweet just like all your daydreams. He had done it out of duty.
Maybe you should’ve kissed Jim instead.
“Pike?”
You jump, whirling around to see Chekov. His eyes widen.
“I am sorry! I did not mean to startle you. You looked upset as you were leaving and so I thought I would check if you are okay.”
You relax, smiling at him. “I will be. Thank you, Chekov. I just... got a little overwhelmed.”
Chekov nods, gesturing back at the club. “Are you going to come back in?”
You glance at the door to the club, feeling nauseous at the mere thought of facing Matthew and Anja again, or having to look Bones in the face with the ghost of his kiss still on your lips.
“Actually,” you say, “I think I’m going to head back. Will you tell the others I’ve gone?”
Chekov nods. “Do you want company on your walk back?”
“No, thank you. I’ll be alright.”
You watch as Chekov heads back into the club, then start walking towards your accommodations. However, your mind begins to wander and before you know it you’re back on the Enterprise, heading towards the greenhouses. You decide to keep going, figuring you can get a head start on tomorrow’s work while simultaneously distracting yourself from the feelings you don’t want to process right now.
You’re eleven plants in when you hear movement down the hall. You freeze. All crew members have the same access to the ship on shore leave as they do when on duty, but no one has a reason to be on the ship at this hour. There are no phasers in the greenhouses, so you grab a pair of shears and make your way out of the botanical labs, creeping down the hallway towards the sound.
You find yourself outside the medbay, sounds of activity coming from inside. You step forward, the doors whooshing open. Inside you find a man, right hand and face littered with cuts, many still oozing blood. Bruises also cover his hand and face, but the largest one is blooming under his left eye. The man is covered in so many wounds it takes you a full three seconds to recognize one of your best friends.
“Jesus Christ, Len!” you exclaim, rushing into the medbay, dropping the shears onto the closest surface.
“Easy, darlin’,” Bones says. “It’s not as bad as it looks.”
“Not as bad as it looks!” You raise a hand and grab a hold of his face by the chin, turning his head this way and that to assess all the cuts and bruises. You then turn your attention to his bloody, bruised hand, noting how he’s not moving his fingers. That’s a bad sign.
“You wouldn’t’ve even seen me like this if I hadn’t run out of my damn first aid supplies earlier today. Keenser’s still oozing that highly acidic green goo and a coupla lieutenants got caught in the crossfire.” Bones huffs a laugh, before cocking his head towards your shears. “What were you gonna do if it wasn’t me? Snip the intruder to death?”
“Ha ha, very funny.” You eye him for a moment. “Okay, go get on that bed over there.”
“What?”
“I’m playing doctor tonight. I’ll collect the supplies and meet you over there.”
“Darlin’, I can patch myself up just fine.”
“Just because you can, doesn’t mean you have to. Now go on. Get,” you say, waving him towards the bed.
Bones gives a slight smile before heading towards the bed. You turn back to the supply cabinet, grabbing a metal tray and loading it with healing salve, bandages, rubbing alcohol, cotton squares, and a tricorder. You pause, giving yourself a moment to bottle up all the feelings you’d been ignoring. Bones needs you as a friend right now. You’re not gonna let your love for him get in the way of that.
You find Bones sitting on the edge of the bed, feet dangling over the side. You plop the tray down on the bed beside him.
“The other guy better look worse,” you say, falling into the usual banter you share as you grab the rubbing alcohol, dump a bit on a cotton square, and start to clean the wounds on his hand.
“Trust me, he does,” Bones says, grimacing as you move his hand.
You frown at his reaction, putting the cotton square down and grabbing the tricorder. “Oh yeah? Must’ve done something real bad if he made you do something like this. This isn’t really your style. Jim, on the other hand...” You finish scanning his hand, frown deepening at the readings. Before Bones can say anything, you say, “You’ve got a hairline fracture at your wrist. You’ll need a brace for that, right?”
Bones nods. “We’ve got some over in that cabinet.”
You walk over to the cabinet Bones identified, grabbing the appropriate brace then walking back to Bones.
“I’m gonna add some salve to your hand before I put on the brace to help with the cuts. I’ll try my best not to hurt you.”
Bones nods again. You apply the healing salve as quickly and carefully as possible. Bones gives the occasional wince and you find yourself absentmindedly rubbing your thumb along the side of his hand in comfort. When you catch yourself doing it, you stop abruptly, now acutely aware of the weight of his hand in yours. Before you can stop yourself, your mind wanders to a daydream, one where Bones’ hands are splayed across your back, holding you close to his chest, his lips on yours...
You come back to reality, mentally berating yourself as you grab some bandages to wrap Bones’ hand, hoping he didn’t notice your mind wander. If he did, he doesn’t say anything, watching you as you finish wrapping his hand and slip the brace on. Bones adjusts the straps on the brace to his satisfaction as you grab a fresh cotton square, add rubbing alcohol, and move to the cuts on his face. For easier access, you slot yourself between his legs and try to ignore the sudden fluttering in your stomach at the proximity.
“What were you thinking, Len? You’re a surgeon. You kinda need your hands to do your job.” You start to clean the wounds on his face.
“My hand will heal. Besides, if I hadn’t, Jim would’ve. Hell, Spock would’ve.” Bones winces as you pass the cotton square over the largest of the cuts.
“Spock? Our Spock?” you ask incredulously, dumping the squares on the tray and reaching for the healing salve. You apply small dabs of the salve on his facial wounds.
“Sulu and Scotty nearly had to hold him back,” Bones says.
“Jesus. Who was this guy and what did he do?”
“It was Matthew.”
You freeze, focusing your gaze to meet Bones’.
“What did... what did he say?” you ask quietly.
Bones keeps his eyes on you. “He was talkin’ shit, insulting you. Started by sayin’ you only got into the Academy because of your dad. It only escalated from there. The middle part’s a bit fuzzy, but I remember he said something about how the only reason you’re still on the Enterprise is because you’re fucking the captain and the CMO. Which is just...” Bones clenches his jaw in anger. “Maybe sleeping with Jim would come with perks, but me? You outrank me. Sleeping with me wouldn’t... Anyway, I wasn't gonna let his comments slide, and neither was Jim. Our made-up three-way relationship aside, you are one of the only people in all of Starfleet that’s worth a damn. You run circles around both of those assholes. We tried to tell them to fuck off, but they wouldn’t listen. Chekov was holding Jim back, Sulu and Scotty were blocking Spock, and I guess Uhura thought I’d be rational enough not to get violent. She thought wrong. It was all over before it really started, lots of broken glass and spilled drinks, but I got a few good punches in.”
You lean up and press a kiss against Bones’ cheek, stunning him into silence.
“Wha... What was that for?” he finally asks.
“For defending my honor,” you say. “Thank you, Len.”
“Here I was thinkin’ you’d be upset.”
“Matthew’s an asshole. Anja too. They could get blown up on a starship for all I care.”
Bones chuckles as you finish lathering his injuries in the healing salve. You wipe your hand of excess salve and then grab the bandages. Bones lets you continue to work in silence, watching you as you place butterfly bandages on the largest of his facial wounds.
“Okay,” you say. “All done.”
“Got me all patched up, Doc?” Bones teases.
“As best I could.” You gather all the used supplies and place them on the metal tray. “You’ll need to ice that black eye and change the bandages every once in a while, but you already knew that. And I’m guessing you know how long you need to wear that brace for, or will at least have M’Benga look you over as soon as possible.”
Bones nods. “Thank you, darlin’. You didn’t have to do all this, you know.”
“You don’t have to thank me, Len. I care about you. This is the least I would do for someone I care about.”
Bones says nothing for a moment, then, “I love when you call me Len.”
You blink. Before you can stop yourself, you say, “I love when you call me darlin’.”
You both stare at each other. You open your mouth to say something, anything to break the silence, but Bones beats you to it.
“I wanted to say sorry.”
You furrow your brow. Of everything he could’ve possibly said in that moment, the last thing you expected of him was an apology.
“What for?” you ask.
“For everything back at the club. Jim and I should’ve told you what we had planned beforehand. And I’m especially sorry you had to kiss me.”
“I didn’t have to kiss you, Len. I chose to.”
“Still, you wouldn’t’ve if we hadn’t put you in an awkward position.”
“That’s not true,” you blurt out, immediately cursing yourself.
Bones blinks at you, eyes flicking to your lips. Neither of you moves, simultaneously too afraid to stick to the status quo or break it.
Fuck it.
You kiss him, softly at first, but when he sighs against your lips and wraps his arms around your waist you press yourself against him, parting your lips to deepen the kiss. You cup his face in your hands, mindful of his injuries.
“I love you,” he murmurs against your lips.
You pull back. “You love me?”
Bones gives you a soft smile. “C’mon, darlin’, you must’ve known.”
You shake your head. “Uhura and Sulu tried to tell me, but I thought they were just teasing me.”
“Why would that tease you?”
“Because I love you.” You run your thumbs across his cheeks. “God, Len, I am so in love with you.”
Bones pulls you into another kiss. You giggle against his lips.
“What?” Bones asks.
“Uhura and Sulu are going to be insufferable for a while,” you say.
Bones grins. “You think they’re going to be insufferable? Wait until Jim finds out.”
You both laugh. Then you kiss him again. And again. And again.

I will not shut up about Star Trek TOS yet and you’ve decided to listen in on that. So welcome to my thoughts on the 11th episode (The Corbomite Maneuver):
- starting off strong with these camera angles and movements
- *sees a spinning colourful cube in space* just go a bit to the left (he is not up for shenanigans today)
- can’t wait for Checkov to be introduced, I hear he gets a gun or smt
- WHAT IS THAT PHYSICAL CHECK??? Why does he have to lie on his back?? And why does he have to have his shirt off?
- if I were Spock trying to call the captain and he picks up and all I’d see was his tits… all I’m saying is he keeps a really good straight face
- OMG we got a “what am I a moon shuttle conductor or a doctor?”
- Sulu laughing at Spock’s sense of humour
- the close up on Kirk’s ass as he leaves the room is so intentional
- Bones sitting on the railing…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- how many surfaces can I sit on competition but my opponent is Leonard Bones McCoy
- just to prove my point the next scene starts with him sitting on a table
- god I feel bad for Scotty having to sit between McCoy and Spock in some of those meetings
- Sulu was cool as a cucumber
- “do you ever tire of questioning me on things you’ve already made your mind up about?” “it gives me emotional security” they are each others emotional support guy (Spock & Kirk)
- Kirk saying“navigation, you’re timing was lousy. Same with engineering, Helmsman” then Bones immediately after “you’re timing was lousy”
- how can you sit in a chair like that even (bones)
- Alexa play tik tok by Kesha
- (okay now I’m just imagining Spock dancing like one of those spider-man memes but completely straight faced (also Spock now listens to Kesha canonically but like in my head))
- THE FUCK IS THAT FUCKING THING??? THAT IS A PUPPET!
- Bones is so caring, he has so much fucking compassion I won’t shut up about him
- “you now have seven minutes left” but there’s 23 minutes left in the episode. Guess a lot of it’s just gonna be dead air… er space I mean (yeah I can come up with a better line than this later (edit: no I can’t I’m tired))
- SPOCK IS SO SAD. He truly thinks this is a hopeless situation.
- Bones is about to die in four minutes and he’s threatening Kirk because of the fact that he put Bailey’s health at risk… I love this man
- “Anytime you can bluff me, doctor” I can’t legally say what I thought was said but maybe the ancient archaeologists will know from context clues
- I don’t think Uhura has spoken to most of the bridge crew up to this point, she barely has had plot or even dialogue, I can’t wait till they give her an episode or just even make her more central
- Spock going to Kirk’s side after the bluff for emotional support
- Spock is so proud when talking about his mom :)))
- Your science and medical officers usually shouldn’t stand so close to your chair and clutch at it while leaning over you. It’s not normal behaviour.
- Okay I’d like to mention how calm Sulu has been and how much I love him, can we please get more of him in future episodes?
- wait so Bones is just gonna let Bailey go back to work? Like I get they apologized to each other but that doesn’t change that it’s still a bad idea to have him there
- Spock, Kirk, and McCoy immediately after the death threat is gone: guess it’s time to start flirting again
[Video description: Spock stands on the bridge, he says, “A very interesting game, this poker.” Kirk sitting in his captains chair replies, “It does have advantages over chess.” McCoy smiling at Spock adds, “Love to teach it to you.” Spock smiles back at him. End description]
- he’s got a twinkle in his eye
Tumblr media
- The shake on the bridge as the tractor beam tows them is so funny if you watch Spock and McCoy (it continues to be funny for the next couple minutes)
- "Captain request to-" "Denied. If it's a trap.. If I'm wrong, I want you here" awwe he wants him safe (idc that this is not what the writers are trying to say, HE WANTS SPOCK SAFE)
- they all have to bend over on the transporter pad but when they get transported Bones isn't even bent he's just standing at his normal height slightly hunched
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- HOLY CRAP I HATE THAT THING... I'm so glad it's a puppet
- nope okay I don't know what's happening, I can't. I'm. What.
- that is apple cider, they are sitting around this guy trying to drink apple cider
- McCoy doesn't know what the fuck to do right now and neither do I
Now imagine, if you will, Spock dancing
Tumblr media
Thank you, and have a good day.

“Right here, darlin’…”
Summary: You try to look after Leonard McCoy after he gets hurt on a mission.
Main Character(s): Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Montgomery “Scotty” Scott
Notes: I’ve never actually seen any original Star Trek shows or movies, but I did finally watch the reboots a few days ago and honestly, I absolutely adore Leonard McCoy. Anyway, this little idea was stuck in my head so hopefully you guys like it… live long and prosper 🖖🏼
Warning: Mentions of wounds and stitches?
“Beam him up, Scotty!” You shout, turning towards the Scotsman.
“But-“
“I don’t care what Captain Kirk ordered you to do… beam him up, now.” You command, your voice dropping to a low and threatening tone.
“Aye, lassie.”
The moment the man in question materialises, you mutter a quiet thank you to the engineer before running towards him. “Doctor McCoy…” Your eyes glide over his body, taking in the wounds and bruises. “Are you okay?”
“What do you think?” He asks, wincing in pain as he steps off the platform.
“There’s no need to take that tone with me, Doctor.” He turns to you with a glare as you try to support his weight. “Send a message to Kirk,” you turn towards Scotty, “let him know I’m taking Bones to MedBay.”
“Will do, lassie.”
-
With your arm firmly grasped around his torso, you ease the CMO onto a bed as you make your way into MedBay.
“Watch it,” he grumbles in pain as he pushes your arm away. Mirroring his glare, you scoff at his unpleasantness before noticing the wound carved into his side.
“I need to get this stitched up before it gets infected…” You mention, grabbing some supplies from the cabinet. You tug on the fabric of his uniform as he closes his eyes, a deep groan of pain rumbling in his throat. “Sorry,” you sigh. “Is there any part of you that doesn’t hurt?” There’s a subtle hint of humour in your voice as you finally throw the torn shirt onto the floor.
“Here.” He says, voice heavy with sarcasm as he points to his shoulder.
Watching him readjust himself on the bed, eyes still closed tight from the pain, your expression softens as you begin to sympathise with your superior. All of a sudden, a thought pops into your head as you allow it to ruminate.
A playful smile plays on your lips before you slowly lean closer towards the man and place a soft kiss on his bare shoulder. Opening his eyes, he turns towards you with a raised eyebrow as he watches you thread the stitches through the wound.
After a moment of contemplation, he allows a charming smirk to grace his handsome features before pointing to his cheek. “Here.”
With a quiet laugh, you indulge him by placing another soft kiss on his cheek, lingering for a moment longer than before. As you pull away, you realise how intimately close you are to the doctor before meeting his gaze, those dark mahogany eyes melting into golden lagoons of honey.
“Right here, darlin’…” He drawls in that southern accent, beckoning you towards him and tapping his lips with his finger. Placing the desired kiss on his lips, you feel his tongue glide over the soft flesh of your lips, begging for more. Allowing his tongue to slip into your mouth, his hands delicately brush against the exposed skin of your body, his wounds and sullen temperament long forgotten.

Breaks were hard to come by in the medical field. Being a doctor was all gas, no breaks. Patients' demands were high, and staff demands were even higher. Most of those in Science Blue spent most of, if not their entire day, on their feet.
Leonard McCoy, most of all.
Chief Medical Officer was no small feat. Most days he wasn't, just a doctor– he was a nurse, a therapist, a leader, and whatever the hell else was demanded of him.
Without a doubt, breaks were hard to come by.
So, on the rare occasion when the medbay breathed for a moment, and he could slip out for an indulgent walk and a much needed cup of coffee, he thanked god for the opportunity. With a loop around the mess hall and a replicated coffee, he felt like a new man. Far too soon, he was back in front of the medbay, strolling in, greeting Chapel with a nod and as much of a smile as he could muster. His head nurse returned the smile…a bit too cheerfully for the day they were having. Leonard elected not to think about it too much. God knows he had enough on his plate. He punched in the keycode to his office, ready to tackle this new bout of paperwork.
The thing is, McCoy was used to his office being a particular way. He kept his lamp on the left side, his family photo on the right, with a box of tissues and a cup of pens. Everything had its place and was accounted for.
So the box of colored pencils and stack of paper laying atop his things was a fair shock to him. So was the woman sitting at his desk, in his chair, looking very much like she belonged there.
He faltered for a moment as he took in the sight and gained his bearings.
“Uh, Sunshine?” he said with bewilderment. He glanced at his watch to double-check that his coffee run hadn’t stretched to the end of his shift (which was impossible anyways) and confirmed she should have been on the bridge by now and certainly not sitting in his office, in his space, amongst his things.
At the sound of his voice, the woman's head shot up, her focus broken from the papers laid in front of her.
“Oh hi, Len! I was wondering when you’d be back,” she said casually, like it was routine for her to be there. With no explanation, she returned to the task of, well, whatever she was doing.
Leonard stood, thoroughly perplexed. It was midday, and he knew for a fact an operations manager would not have nothing to do around this time. From her silence, it would seem that he would be getting no answers unless he asked for them.
“Not that I’m not happy to see you Sunshine but, uh, aren’t you on shift right now? And how exactly did you get into my office?” he inquired with more patience than he would have offered anyone else.
She lifted a red colored pencil from the paper and thoughtfully tapped it to her temple
“Technically, yes, I am on shift, but I decided this is part of my job, and Kirk hurt my feelings earlier this week so he owes me a moment away.” He finally approached the desk and peeked at her handiwork. “And Chapel let me in, by the way – said you wouldn't mind.”
Her movements slowed to a stop, and she looked up at the doctor with the biggest, prettiest eyes he’d ever seen.
“You don't mind, do you?” she asked. Usually, he would have, but he decided right then, that he did not actually mind at all.
“I’m more curious as to what this,” he gestured to his now messy desk, “is all about?”
She beckoned him to come closer, and he found himself sitting in the obligatory guest seat…at his own desk. Sunshine held up a glossy piece of paper, folded in half with blue and pink bubble font across the front reading, ‘Get well soon!’
He stared for a moment, his eyebrows drawing together.
“You’re…writing cards?”
“Yeah!” she nodded. “For the engineers who got affected by that gas leak. That rash looked… not fun. Thought it might cheer them up, maybe.”
He would never say it out loud, for fear of losing her friendship forever, but at times like this, Kirk may have had a point about her being a bit…kindergarten teacher.
She laughed at his sort of scrunched-up expression. “Listen, I know what you’re thinking and you’re right! It's a little silly, but the engineers that were on that dock were all Ensigns! Like, fresh out of Starfleet! They probably miss their families, and now they have a nasty purple rash to worry about. I just thought they might like a card.”
McCoy could say for certain that he had never met anyone quite like Lieutenant Sunshine - and realized he never would again. This was incredibly kind, and wholly unnecessary… and a very Sunshine thing to do. Though one important question still lingered.
“And you’re doing this in my office because…?”
She shrugged.
“Well I could do it in my quarters, but I figured you could use the company.” She paused. Before adding sheepishly, “And I wanted the company.”
McCoy coughed to cover up his surprise. Though, he wasn’t sure what else he was expecting. Sunshine was known for being candid with her feelings. Most of them anyway. His cheeks dusted pink.
Sunshine, oblivious to her friend's blushing, tossed a colored pencil and a card his way.
“You should sign this one, by the way. A little birdie told me you yelled at Ensign Barlowe while taking her vitals, and I’m sure she’d appreciate a card from you.”
He internally damned Scotty, who was not only probably the ‘little birdie’ but also definitely put her up to this.
He stared down at the card, forcing his head to stop running a mile a minute, and finally mustered a scoff.
“I’m not signing an apology card because an Ensign couldn’t sit still on the Biobed.”
Sunshine shook her head and giggled. God, what a sound, he thought.
“It’s a get well soon card, not an apology card. And I’m not scolding you, Len. That day must have been stressful. I mean, fourteen engineers all turning purple? Crazy. I could never do your job.”
He shook his head. He was pretty sure Sunshine could do anything she put her mind to. His mind wandered briefly to what it would be like, with her by his side, decked in Science Blue. His heart stuttered at the image.
He wasn’t sure why, but he found himself scribbling ‘feel better’ onto the bottom of the paper, and tossing it back to her. The smile that bloomed on her face told him it was the right decision.
He leaned back in the chair and watched her thoughtfully. The sound of her voice played on repeat like a record in his head. He found himself ruminating on every pretty syllable she spoke.
“Kirk hurt your feelings?” he blurted, remembering how she got here. Sunshine paused, surprised by his suddenness. An unreadable look passed over her frowning face.
“He just said a dumb joke, it’s nothing to worry about. Promise.” Her smile returned, just as quickly as it left. Leonard tilted his head. He was expecting her to launch into a story of which he would hang on every word and that would give him fuel to berate Kirk with later. Just how badly did Kirk fuck up?
“I can practically hear you thinking, you know. You’re such a worrywart.” Her eyes playfully flicked from her cards to him. “Like I said, it’s fine.”
“You sure? If you’re mad enough, I could schedule him for a measles vaccine. Maybe a booster shot too.”
Her laugh echoed around his office and illuminated it like a fire. He smiled, finding hers to be contagious.
“That’s gotta be malpractice, Len. Hard no from me.” She shook her head.
“Malpractice? I’d be doing him a favor. That man avoids healthcare like it’s the plague.”
Sunshine rolled her eyes. “Whatever you say, Doctor.”
She looked like she belonged, he thought. Sitting in his office, in his chair. He allowed himself a brief moment of peace, as he sipped his coffee and watched her switch colored pencils. He was content to just watch her like this, without conversation or reason. Unfortunately, nothing can last forever. His eyes drifted toward the ticking clock.
“You know I have to get back to work eventually, right?” Not that he wanted to leave, at all. In fact, if time allowed, and if he didn't know Chapel would be beating down his door soon, he would stay cooped up in his office with her for hours.
She laughed. “Yeah, I know, CMO. I’m starting my rounds soon too. All I could squeeze from Kirk was 15 minutes down here.”
Leonard blew a raspberry.
“I wish I could get 15 minutes away.”
Her head quirked.
“Don't you have some time? Chapel told me you weren't busy, or else I wouldn't have bothered you.” She paused and received the pointed look from her friend. “Okay, I probably still would have, but with more poise and apologeticness - but that's beside the point!” Sunshine began stacking up her cards and putting away her colored pencils. “Chapel specifically said you weren’t busy when she let me in!”
The gears in Leonard’s head turned. He was very, very far from not being busy. The Medbay had been as bustling as ever this shift, and the only reason he left in the first place was by Chapel's suggestion, who swore she could handle things for a few minutes.
Damn it, Chapel.
“Len? Everything alright?”
When his eyes pulled from the ground, Sunshine was right in front of him, with a questioning smile. Leonard felt blood rush to his face at their proximity. She smelled like… well, sunshine. And flowers. And just… good.
“Yeah, fine,” he said gruffly.
“Walk me out?”
“Of course.”
He dared to place his hand on the small of her back as he led her out, and if he paid just a little more attention, he would have seen her cheeks redden at the contact.
They exited in tandem, with Sunshine rambling about wishing rounds were any other day, and how the last thing she wanted to do was run around the ship checking up on complaints that ‘could easily be solved in an email.’
“Well,” she said as they reached the entrance. “Thanks for letting me hide in your office for a few.”
He waved his hand. “Anytime,” he said with lighthearted sarcasm.
She placed the cards on the reception desk and snorted, “You’ll regret saying that, McCoy.”
He replied, with all sincerity, “I doubt that.”
They were both quiet for a moment, looking at one another, eyes glossing over with adoration.
Sunshine had always admired the doctor's strength, and his drive to help others in all circumstances.
Leonard would forever be in awe of her kindness and her unwavering spirit.
A cleared throat broke both of their gazes. Sunshine flinched, nearly dropping her papers.
“Chapel! Hi! Thanks for letting me use Len’s office.” She laughed nervously, awkwardly dropping the stack of cards on the desk. “You’ll make sure the engineers get these?”
Chapel glanced between the two knowingly. Both of which now refused to make eye contact. Leonard was suddenly very interested in the linoleum floors and Sunshine in the plain white ceiling.
“Of course, Lieutenant,” the head nurse said politely. Sunshine thanked her again before acknowledging Leonard.
“Have a good shift, and, um, see you later!” she blurted before hightailing out of the medbay like it was suffocating her.
The Doctor watched her go with the sudden sinking feeling that he’d done something wrong. And as usual, when these feelings began to well within him, he took them out on whoever was closest, or, in this case, responsible.
“Really, Chapel?”
He leaned over the reception desk.
The woman in question stared at her manicured nails without a care in the world.
“Really, what, Doctor?”
Leonard gritted his teeth impossibly hard and blew a long breath out of his nostrils.
“You didn’t think to, oh I dunno, warn me before letting someone in my office in the middle of the work day?”
He wasn’t angry at her, not really. He was more frustrated with the feelings that clawed up his chest whenever he heard Sunshine’s laugh or the constant feeling to reach out for her -
No, he wasn’t really mad at Chapel.
But that wasn’t going to stop him from acting like he was.
“It’s just Sunshine,” the woman shrugged. “Would you have preferred I turned her away?” She finally met Leonards's eyes with just as much ferocity as he was giving her.
“No,” he gritted out, “but a warning would be preferable.”
She rolled her eyes and returned to her work.
“Just trying to move things along, Doctor.”
He stomped away before his head nurse could add anything else.
He returned to his office, palms sweating, and tried not to focus on the smell of her warm, floral perfume now hanging in the air.

Found another fairly completed WIP, this one set post Elaan of Troyius.
"Jim!" Leonard greeted as the captain strolled into medbay. "Take a seat, would ya?"
Jim did as he was told. "Everything alright, Doctor?"
Leonard ran the tricorder over him. "I dunno, Jim, you tell me."
"You called me down here, remember?"
"I did," McCoy agreed.
"So?" Jim shrugged. "Where's the fire?"
Leonard folded his arms over his chest. "I'm not buying Spock's antidote."
"Is that so?" Jim asked, looking at the ground.
"It is. I know what this ship means to you, but I don't buy that it was enough to overtake some alien infection."
"And what do your instruments say on the matter?"
"They agree."
"Do they now?" His voice was flat and empty.
"'Love potion' is a very unscientific way of saying 'altering the body's biochemistry'. You're giving off some unusual readings here. Not as bad as they would have been right after the infection, I'm sure. But certainly not normal."
Jim nodded slowly. "So it wasn't my fault?" He asked quietly.
Leonard's face fell and he set aside his scanner to put a had on Jim's arm. "No, Jim, of course it wasn't."
"I should've known better-"
"How?" Len challenged. "Did anyone tell you what the ambassador said about the tears?" Jim shook his head. "Then it can't possibly be your fault. If anything…it's my fault. I should have warned. And for that I'm sorry, Jim."
"You didn't have any reason to suspect she'd try anything-"
"That doesn't mean I couldn'a warned you. But playing the blame game isn't going to get us anywhere. Are you okay?"
"I would've said 'no', Bones."
"I know, Jim. I know," Len answered softly.
"I wanted to- I tried, but… it was almost like dissociative, you know? I was just...trapped in my own body and I couldn't do anything. Not anything she didn't want anyway." Len sat next to Jim and rested his hand between his shoulders. "I tried to tell her it was wrong, but she kept saying it was what we both wanted. I wanted to push her away, but part of me was afraid to hurt her, and the other part… I wanted to get away, but it was like something else was controlling me. Like I was just a puppet."
"In a sense, you were. You're human, Jim. It affected you differently than it would have one of her own species. As a species they've adapted to those chemical changes in their bodies to be normal and probably even necessary. But you're not one of them. Your body wasn't prepared for that kind of reaction."
The captain gave a small nod and continued his staring contest with the floor. "Would the antidote do anything at this point, doctor?"
"It'll bring your body back to it's usual equilibrium. The human body is incredibly resilient and it's moving that way anyway, but the antidote will speed up that process."
"You have it on hand?"
Len nodded. "I do." He stood and picked up a loaded hypospray from the table near the bed. Jim tilted his head away and winced a little at the injection.
"Thanks, Bones," he said quietly.
Len sighed. "Look at me, kid."
Jim raised his watery eyes to Len's face.
"The antidote is only good for fixing your biochemistry. The rest is going to take time. It's going to have ups and down just like healing from any traumatic event would. So don't expect all this to just...go away because I gave you a shot. Be kind to yourself, alright?"
Jim ground his jaw and nodded. "Doctor's orders?" He tried to tease with a faltering smile.
Len brushed aside a stray tear with this thumb. "Doctor's orders," he agreed. "Come 'ere, kid." He tugged Jim into his arms and held him tightly.
Jim melted into Len's arm. "Sometimes, part of the healing process is to grieve," Len advised softly. He hugged Jim tighter when the younger man's tears began to wet his shirt.
Several minutes passed before Jim sat back with a sigh. "Thanks, Bones," he said, already sounding calmer.
Len gripped his shoulder. "Do you need a few days leave?"
Jim shook his head. "I'm alright. I'd like to keep this between us, as much as possible though."
"Of course. Whatever you need, just let me know."
"I could do with a drink, if you're offering."
"I think I can fix you up some cocoa."
Jim chuckled tiredly. "I had a feeling you might say that."
"Your system's outta whack as it is. I'm not givin' you anything to unbalance it further."
"I suppose that's fair," he sighed. "Thanks for lookin' out for me, Bones."
"That is what you keep me around for. C'mon. You can stay with me tonight."

10 characters 10 fandoms
I was tagged by @birdkeeperklink thank you so much! I really had to think on these since, as per my url you can guess there are a lot. (sorry for the late reply. I got no excuse, really, except life continued to happen around me and deciding who to pick was really hard.)
in no particular order (though Loki is Number 1, I'm sorry everyone else), here we go:
1. Loki Odinson from MARVEL
I just love him so much I've written a 78K fix-it fantasy novel (not finished) to give him the happy ending he deserves. there is no other character I identify with harder than this one: a younger sibling full of rage, always feeling overshadowed by the older one, just wanting to prove their own worth and show the world that they are capable (i got over this a lot in recent years but my love for him still remains.)
Tom just plays him so perfectly and I am so heartbroken that the writers at MARVEL did not know what to do with him, so they killed him off (the Loki show doesn't count because that's not him okay.) he's always having a good time, he's snarky and clever and desperately needs a hug. how can you not love him?
Tumblr media
2. Mr. Spock and Leonard (Bones) McCoy from Star Trek TOS
Yes, they are two people but I just couldn't choose between them!
The grumpy surgeon with a heart of gold an the emotionally suppressed but deeply loving vulcan live in my heart rent free ever since I was a child. Spock was my first crush ever and his complicated relationship with McCoy has always fascinated me. they are two incredibly complicated people and there isn't enough space here to describe why. writing them is just as much fun as watching them and I actually own the autographs of both Leonard and De.
Tumblr media
3. James Wilson from House M.D.
he's a man of many contradictions: he is kind but also House's best friend, he loves people dearly but can also tell them to fuck off. he is confident and funny and he helps people without being a pushover. he loves all of his his wives but cheats at least once. he is a walking mystery which makes him a great friend for House and a nightmare to write. I just love him! also, that smile!
Tumblr media
4. Castiel from Supernatural
Cas is the character, truly! he can go from nerdy to badass in the blink of an eye. a cosmic being that plays dress up just to make one human smile, who should be nothing but an ant to him. he fiercely protects the people he loves and always tries to do the right thing. the character that inserted himself into the story against the writer's will and changed the narrative for ever. when he came on the show, I hated his guts. and look at me now...
Tumblr media
5. Zuko from Avatar the last Aribender
you simply cannot talk about redemption arcs without mentioning Zuko at some point. an exceptional character amongst a cast of exceptional characters. I once joked that 90% of his lines were just him screaming but that poor boy has so much rage inside him, and with all that trauma, can you really blame him? he is the epitome of character growth and a fascinating example of how the villain can become a hero without taking any shortcuts.
Tumblr media
6. Stephen Maturin from the Aubrey-Maturin series
if you read the books, you'll know why. this fucking lunatic is so oblivious to his own eccentricities that you just have to love him. nobody does it quite like him to be honest. no, Stephen, people will not think you're eccentric because you practice sword fighting on deck, however they might think that because you let loose 1000 bees on the ship and run around naked. he has no sense for proper etiquette and i love him so much for it. also, he get's on a ship without being able to swim and performs open brain surgery on deck. he is incredibly skilled and the best damn doctor in the entire fleet. also, his dynamic with his best friend/captain is one of the best friendships I've ever seen/read.
Tumblr media
7. Scrooge McDuck
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this might be an unusual choice but i grew up reading comics and at one point in my life i figured out that all of my favourite stories were writen and drawn by the legendary Don Rosa, who in his book "the life and times of Scrooge McDuck" created one of the most fascinating and fun to watch characters i've ever seen. starting from humble beginnings and rising to the top through his percevierence, fearlessness and ingenuity, inevitably losing everything he loved and ending up alone, only to be found by his family again, his story is one of my absolute favourites in literature. i know that due the never ending nature of comic books, he can never truly get his happy ending but I really wished he could.
8. Keeley Jones from Ted Lasso
Tumblr media
I don't think I've ever seen a woman like her in any media to be honest. she is so clearly feminine and embodies all the traits of a woman that would normally be depicted as bitchy, toxic and self obsessed but she is just none of those things. she is a girly woman who loves pink and cries and she is just so human and lovely and i love her so much for it! her friendship with Rebecca is also so amazing and feels very real and true to what friendships between woman are actually like. I just love her as a beacon of healthy femininity and can only hope that there will be more characters like her in the future!
9. Kim Kitsuragi from Disco Elysium
Tumblr media
the voice, the looks, the everything! the moment I met him I knew I wanted him to be my best friend for ever! his deadpan delivery combined with his dorkyness and his shere competence had me on the floor on multiple occasions. I have not finished the game yet but I have never had a companion this incredible in any video game ever! I could listen to him read the phone book for hours. when he went "daba doop doop dead" I died. also him jumping in when I fail a check has to be the most badass thing ever. I love you, Kim. please be proud of me. (also, I know he probably has a darker side to him that I am not seeing right now because I am always choosing the nice options but hey, the best characters are the complicated ones.)
10. Cole Turner from Charmed
Tumblr media
this show was so much better when he was in it! the half demon who crosses over to the good side without ever really changing his ways. he burns someone alive and laughs about it, drags a detective to hell and doesn't give a shit about civilians. even when he is completely human his solution to assholes is to punch them in the face. he loves power and controling others and looking good while doing it. I know him beind "good" was a whole thing on the show but to me the most fun about him was that he continued being evil but was now using his powers to help the good guys. show me another character that got redeemed into the hero team without losing his evil edge. Cole was just so much fun to watch but unfortunately his character got totally buthcered by bad writing.
No pressure of doing this but tagging:

Mcspirk?
I Ship It (obviously)
1. What made you ship it?
You know, it's really funny. I watched TOS as a small child, again as a teenager, and again in my thirties -- but it wasn't until I saw the stills and the out-of-context quotes that it started to click for me that these Super Divorced Men were in a poly triad. And I thought, "Oh, it just looks gay when out of context." But then I looked at the context. And it was all over for me.
It's the way Jim looks at Bones and Spock, like the universe vanishes for him when they are close. It's the way Spock (who is from a culture where affection is a source of shame) cannot keep his hands off his Captain or Doctor for five minutes (oh hi I'm a touch telepath you seem to have some exposed skin *POKE*). It's McCoy pushing Kirk and Spock away and then rushing back to them with everything that he is, only to push them away again.
It's Leonard Nimoy's face scant inches from De Kelly's or Bill Shatner's, and the screen melting from the heat and sexual tension. It's DeKelly looking at Shatner and licking his lips.
It's Kirk's eyes on their lips and their asses in any instance where Kirk doesn't have lines, and Kirk and Spock biting their lips when they look at one another.
Once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
Honestly, in TOS, my favorite thing is the speeches that McCoy and Spock give that are basically just thinly disguised declarations of love.
Spock: "Computers make excellent and efficient servants; but I have no wish to serve under them. Captain, a starship also runs on loyalty to one man, and nothing can replace it, or him."
McCoy: "In this galaxy, there's a mathematical probability of three million earth-type planets...and in all the universe, three million million galaxies like this one. And in all of that, and perhaps more, only one of each of us. Don't destroy the one named Kirk."
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
LOL I think shipping a triad is unpopular enough!
But actually, I think it's my take on Spock. Yes, Spock is a badass. Yes, Spock has super strength. Yes, Spock says he doesn't have emotions.
But Spock lies. Spock steals starships. Spock goes into a group of hippie teenagers and is accepted as one of their own inside thirty seconds. Spock has a sense of humor and will sass you into the ground. So much of the character is hidden, and he's terrified to let it loose, partly because he is afraid of hurting others, but more than that, because he fears ridicule.
I see the sweet, innocent, goofy SNW Spock inside of TOS Spock. The snark and the sass are walls. When those walls come down, once the pain has been soothed, you get the sweet and the goofy back.

Logical Detour
The words have been coming slowly today. This ended up being shorter than I wanted it to be. Please be gentle. I’ve never written Spock/Bones before. This is my first foray into that particular ship, so please forgive any inconsistencies/errors/ooc moments/etc. Also, I’m not specifying which Spock and Bones this is, because everyone will inevitably imagine different versions.
Day 14: Prostate Massage
SoC prompt list here. SoC Masterlist here.
~*~
Spock x Leonard McCoy (Spones)
[A/N: This is smut, so 18+ ONLY, MINORS DNI!!!]
Warnings: Interspecies sex, Human/Vulcan sex, fingering, prostate massage, mild dirty talk, begging, risky sex.
~*~
They’d talked about this before, but the Enterprise’s C.M.O. hadn’t really believed that his partner was serious.
“Do you know how many regulations we’re breaking right now?”
“Twenty-seven.” The lightning-fast precision of the man gasping atop the medical bed tugged a small, fond smile across the Doctor’s lips - not that he would let Spock see that, of course. After all, he was trying to appear stern and irritated - aloof and grumpy like he always was. “An illogical endeavor given our bond.”
“Unless you want one of the nurses to catch us, lower your voice,” McCoy murmured glancing at the door. He had made sure that all of the on-duty medical staff were busy enough that they wouldn’t be bothered, but he didn’t tell Spock that.
Truthfully, he just wanted to shut him up so he could listen to something other than the First Officer’s unfailingly correct answers. Spock’s smug eyebrow raises, his uncanny ability to turn every conversation toward logic, his ability to make every question seem like a mistake...it was all so damned irritating!
And despite all that, Leonard loved the pointy-eared bastard. Hell, maybe it was because of all those frustrating traits that the Doctor found Spock so magnetic.
“Doctor...ashaya, please,” the Vulcan sounded desperate. That brought a smirk to McCoy’s face. It always did. His long, dexterous fingers curled and flexed until Spock’s back arched.
Ah, there it was. That sensitive spot he’d been dancing around for far too long would undoubtedly make Spock scream if he applied too much pressure. Surgical precision was required for an...operation as delicate as this.
“You really should’ve come down here sooner. With all those stressful duties you bridge officers are responsible for, you needed this sort of massage a long time ago.” As he spoke quietly, McCoy stroked his lover’s prostate in a slow, even rhythm, building his pleasure gradually. They’d done this in their quarters before, and every single time ended with Spock practically sobbing through his release.
A slightly quieter version of that climax was the Doctor’s goal for this little sickbay visit. Reflexively, Spock’s hand shot out and caught his partner’s, pressing their fingers together in a Vulcan kiss as they both blushed.
Well...maybe he was doing this for his own enjoyment, too. Just a little bit.

read it on AO3 at https://archiveofourown.org/works/52694722 by Spirrkk Spock turned to Kirk, took the cat into his arms, and asked, “Jim, t’hy’la, my beloved, please let me take her home”. With sweet brown eyes highlighted by the blue eyeshadow that he so favored, the Vulcan almost looked like an angel tempting him. Oh, he was wicked, he knew just what buttons to push in order to have Kirk bending to his every will. After all, you are bound to know someone inside and out after so many years together. However, James Tiberius Kirk was strong. He wasn’t the youngest captain of the Starfleet for nothing. He had faced so many challenges, obstacles, and villains. He could say no to his husband. ➫ JIM was used to this, the casual ribbing from his doctor, and not only his doctor, he knew the barbs of truth came from his best friend. They happened to be the same guy so he really could only make a face at him like he was half amused and offended. It was time for his yearly physical and he hadn't thought he did that poorly. Though he was having a bit of trouble catching his breath. "Maybe I've put on a little weight but there's no need to bring my age into this, Bones. I mean, seriously? A lemon? That's just mean." The captain played up the offence, but really, he wasn't shocked by this news. They were getting older and frankly, he had let the exercise go a little bit, and he DEFINITELY wasn't sticking to the diet McCoy had set up for him, thanks to chef.
"if you would stick to an exercise routine, we wouldn't be having anything like this talk again Jim. i know i'm not the best man to tell you about going out and exercising but you need to keep your fitness up or what's gonna happen. it's gonna be Jim Kirk running away from something and having to sit down during the middle of it." Leonard chuckles and cocks his eyebrow at the other man "Let's not talk about age because i'm older than you kid and i know i'm a lemon so that's where we stand on that subject as much as i hate to admit it." His eyes narrow a bit as he looks at the other man and then he starts wagging a finger at him "i know that you're not following my diet again. What am i going to have to do? Get chef to start serving you cabbage soup every day because you are definitely a little on the chubby side. i'm not saying your fat by any means but a little bit of that weight needs to come off if you want to enjoy a drink of bourbon every once in a while." Leonard then walks over and hands Jim his shirt "Now put that back on you troublemaker."

Okay so I’m back on my bullshit (watching the original series for the first time) I’ll just start by giving a brief look at episode 4 and then a much longer look at episode 5.
Episode 4 (Where No Man Has Gone Before):
- where the fuck is Bones, I miss him :((
- please let Spock wear blue, cool colours suit him
- there’s a moment when Elizabeth is defending Gary and the whole room looks at her like “damn you got the whole room laughing”
- guys wait, just hit him with a rock, seriously
- “Nobody but us chickens doctor” - Kirk
- Scotty on da bridge
- there’s something about Star Trek and their psychiatrists always being women or being weaker, I wanna see a psychiatrist who is super buff and trained. Like you better process your feelings and seek help (I guess Ezri is more tough, but I still think her character is not well done)
- I bet those contacts hurt and were blinding. Like evil dead contacts were super thick and hurt and that was in the 80s, this is the 60s so those could not have been comfortable
- I like when things just appear/disappear in this show
- Kirk won’t hesitate to punch a bitch
- “I felt for him too” that’s such a big moment, Spock admitting that to Kirk
Episode 5 (The Naked Time):
My knowledge of this episode comes from the second episode of next generation so…
- damn those suits are orange
- “he was taking a shower fully clothed” mind your damn business
- OMG LEONARD MCCOY!
- “And as for my anatomy being different from yours, I am delighted.” DAMN GET HIM
- I think they may be flirting ur honour
Tumblr media
- WHAT?!? Is that allowed??? I mean uhm…
Tumblr media
- OMG ITS GEORGE TAKEI
- that blood is pink.. oops he’s dead now
- Bones sitting on tables/horizontal surfaces like this compilation
Tumblr media
- uhm why’s he circle him like that tho
Tumblr media
- “I want the impossible checked out too” WHAT, STOP BULLYING HIM!!!
- falling
Tumblr media
- more falling
Tumblr media
- YEAH KIRK YOUD BETTER BE SORRY DONT GET MAD AT YOUR CREW!!!
- oh wait is that nurse chapel?!? I haven’t seen strange new worlds (other than the lower decks episode) but I know chapel has a relationship with Spock
- I like how fucking emotional Spock actually is. Like I know he’s under the control of the virus in this episode but he shows so many emotions anyway. I love him.
- “I am in control of my emotions” sure bbygirl
- but in more seriousness this scene is amazing
Tumblr media
- Sulu: let’s out the most pained terrifying scream
Bones: ._.
- “hey can I get a sip of that water” “it’s not water” “oh vodka I like your style” “it’s a complex chain of molecules that acts like alcohol when it enters the bloodstream” “what” “it’s sweat alcohol, pussy” (bones when explaining how the virus works)
- “Jim when I feel friendship for you, I’m ashamed” how do I- how am I- what do I do with that line
- James Kirk not afraid to slap a bitch
- SPOCK NOT AFRAID TO SLAP A BITCH BACK
- “SINNER REPENT” just write REDRUM stfu
- BONES Was it necessary to RIP HIS SHIRT???
- “are you alright James?” SIR CALM DOWN SPOCK CALM YOURSELF
- it is funny how immediately after both Spock and McCoy are right by Kirk’s side
- “time warp” ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW MENTIONED
- and they decided not to become time travellers
Okie dokie, if ya got this far, thanks! I’m enjoying watching through this and I like sharing it with all of you. Follow for more I guess?
the first episode thoughts
And all the other episodes thoughts
My Star Trek experience has been all over the place lol (next generation to lower decks to ds9 to aos and now arriving at tos (yeah I know it’s terrible I watched aos first but KARL URBAN))

Spirktober 2023, day 8: Matchmaker
Remember the good ole days when I could successfully tell a story in under 2,000 words? Yeah, me too. Here is my pass at a matchmaker spirk fic, featuring: Nyota getting what she wants and deserves, the fun of hurt/comfort without having to write action scenes, and Bones being the best.
Also posted on AO3 here!
☆☆☆
Leonard dropped his lunch tray onto the table across from her with just a hint more aggression than normal, and she knew that she was in for an entertaining if not entirely unbiased accounting of someone’s audacity.
Leonard McCoy was not one to hide his complaints from others (one of the nurses was keeping a tally of “I’m a doctor, not an X” statements and there was a long-standing betting pool on which occupations would get mentioned), but Nyota considered herself privileged to be one of the only people to whom he confided identifying information.
“That boy is going to be the death of me, Uhura,” he grumbled, and stabbed a fork into the saddest replicated salad she had ever seen. She hummed empathetically and continued to eat her soup while he got his legs under him, so to speak, for whatever monologue was sure to follow.
“Full of spit and vigor, too much courage for his own good, but not a lick of the common sense that God gave a rock. One of the most handsome men on the Enterprise, even if that’s not to my taste, but I’ve heard enough of the ensigns crying over him to their friends at one point or another in the maintenance closets. Hasn’t dated seriously in years, despite desperately wanting to be in a relationship, and yet! And yet! When he comes to me and says, ‘Bones, I’ve fallen in love and I think it might be the forever-type,’ and I say, ‘Well, you damn fool, aren’t you going to say something?’ And He says,” and Bones pressed his lips together in a manner that made his eyes seem more protuberant than normal. “And he says, ‘No, I don’t think I will!’ Can you believe it?”
“No, I can’t,” Nyota murmured, and she smiled conspiratorially at him. She started narrowing down the list of candidates. One of the most handsome men on the Enterprise could be any number of people, depending on one’s proclivities, but she knew Leonard liked a blonde as much as the next man. Courage, with no common sense? Well, every man on the Security staff, certainly, and most of the bridge crew besides. But who among them were unpartnered?
“You know him,” Leonard said, accusatory, and jabbed his fork in her direction. “You know that he would be a wonderful husband to anyone who didn’t mind playing second fiddle to the Enterprise.”
“I know,” she said, though she didn’t. “But good luck finding someone who doesn’t mind competing with and losing to a ship.”
“That’s the worst part! Or the best, depending on which way you look at it.”
“What makes you say that?”
“He’s in love with maybe the only person more dedicated to his duty than he is.”
There was a little click in the back of Nyota’s head, similar to the sensation she felt when the puzzle pieces of a language’s syntax slotted into place for her. Leonard finished his salad and tossed his fork down onto his tray. He pressed both palms to the table and leaned towards her. She leaned in towards him, unwilling to miss a single syllable or inflection. She had to know.
“Let me tell you, Miss Uhura,” Leonard said, and stood up. “Mr. Spock is going to leave our damned captain high and dry if he can’t buck up the courage to say something before some nice Vulcan woman tries to fill T’Pring’s shoes.”
Confirmation. Nyota did not let her face show that this was new information to her. “But what if Spock doesn’t love him in return?”
Leonard scoffed. “Find me a man who looks at anyone the way Spock looks at Kirk and tell me that he isn’t in love.” He nodded to her, bussed his tray, and vanished through the officers’ mess doors back down the hallway that led to Medbay.
The Captain was in love with Spock?
Well, that was certainly interesting news. She would have to pay closer attention to the way that Spock looked at Kirk in return. If she couldn’t read Spock’s body language better than anyone else on this ship, she would resign her commission and go home. She considered Spock a good friend, and he had never mentioned anything to her about being smitten, though she didn’t think Vulcans had a word for anything close to that. But would he mention it at all? Or would he prefer to keep it to himself, if he had developed romantic feelings for someone?
She resolved herself to acquire new information, solely through legitimate means, of course, to determine if Leonard’s gossip was true. And she was only going to collect information. She had a policy against meddling in the affairs of others. If they couldn’t work it out on their own, that was their business.
☆☆☆
Nyota watched Kirk and Spock carefully over the next three shifts. They were respectful of each other, perfectly matched teammates. Spock balanced Kirk’s more impulsive decisions, and Kirk’s nonlinear thinking pattern pushed Spock to consider the merits of new ideas. They were good for each other, as they had been for years. But it was only as she watched them carefully that she witnessed how Kirk looked at his first officer when his back was turned. The captain, under Spock’s careful gaze, was professional, warm, guarded. The moment Spock had turned away, or turned his formidable focus on someone else, Kirk’s eyes softened, his smile relaxed. He was in deep.
What Nyota could not tell, though, was whether or not Spock felt similarly. He allowed Kirk his friendly touches --- a hand on the shoulder, a tap on the arm --- but tolerating the easy affection did not necessarily imply that he welcomed it. When he looked at the captain, Nyota could easily see his affection and respect. But was that friendship? Or something more?
When Spock requested the pleasure of her company in his quarters a few days later, she readily accepted. This was not an unusual request, as he had been teaching her the Vulcan lute and she was introducing him to Earth’s classical music, but she had never before approached their time with a covert mission. When she arrived, he replicated her a cup of the tea she preferred (chamomile, with lavender and honey) and brought down his lute from its place on his bookshelf. They had been working through children’s songs, but she was finally starting to feel as though her fingers knew where to go. In exchange, she introduced him to a new one of her favorite pieces: the overture to Swan Lake. He liked dark music, minor keys, percussive stringed instruments, and she thought he might enjoy the melancholy nature of it.
“It is beautiful art,” he said, when the last notes had died away.
“It is usually accompanied by ballet. We should see if any theaters nearby perform it on our next shore leave,” she said. “We could have a night on the town.”
“I would enjoy that,” he said. There was something in his tone that few others would have perceived; a distance. He was distracted by something. It must have been a heavy thought indeed, to distract the unflappable Vulcan.
“Spock,” she said gently, rewriting her body language to be inviting, calming, uninvasive. “Is there anything you would like to discuss?”
He glanced up at her from his lute, which he held carefully. His eyes and body said yes but his mouth said, “No, Nyota. Thank you.”
The set of his shoulders was so determinedly miserable that she decided a little pushing might go a long way, even if he chastised her for her intrusion later. She had learned long ago the human aspects of his mind needed community even if he didn’t know how to ask for it. “Are you sure? I don’t mean to intrude, but you seem a little… distracted.”
He held her gaze for a minute, deciding. She kept her face on the caring side of neutral. After a period of consideration, he sighed quietly through his nose.
“I have been changed,” he said. She felt the corner of her mouth twitch, but hid it.
“What do you mean?”
He plucked one string on the lute, the note dissonant on its own. “I did not believe it to be possible for me. After T’Pring chose the kal-if-fee and I nearly destroyed the captain, I did not consider finding a compatible mind to be possible or probable.” He looked up at her. “But I have discovered a compatible mind on the Enterprise; so close to my own that if we were to meld, I believe a bond would form spontaneously.”
“Spock,” she gasped. “That’s wonderful. Why are you speaking like this is a bad thing?”
“This is a bad thing, Nyota,” he said gently. “What human would submit to the possession of a mating bond?”
“Your mother did,” she said. “Someone who loved you might.”
“I could never bear to take away his freedom. And,” Spock paused. He closed his eyes. “I do not think that this person is. Interested. In me. In men.”
Kirk, you enormous idiot. “Have you asked him?”
“It has not come up in casual conversation on the bridge, no,” he said. So it was someone on the bridge crew. It couldn’t be anyone but the captain, right? She did not think that Sulu would be Spock’s type. Swords were an illogical weapon of choice.
“We do frequently talk about sex on the bridge,” she pointed out. “But some people --- two in particular --- do not participate at all, because you’re both consummate professionals.”
Spock gave her a warning glare, but she had to be sure. “If I am following your meaning, which I think I am, it would not be logical to assume that, just because he has not expressly stated that he is interested in men, the interest does not exist.”
“I am unwilling to entertain any hope on this front. I believe it would be detrimental to our working relationship.” He did not contradict her on her assumption. Bingo.
“It could strengthen it beyond your imagination,” she pointed out.
“The risk is too high. I will not compromise our friendship for anything in this universe or any other.”
“I know, Spock. But this could be something beautiful for you both. You’ll never know unless you ask him,” she said. “Maybe he feels the same way you do, feels your compatibility, and thinks that you’re not into him. You’re not exactly an open book.”
“And yet I am to you, dear Nyota,” he said, and now she could see the twinkle of warmth in his eye. She knew in her bones that Spock would be a wonderful partner. She had even considered him for herself at one point, before deciding that she was looking for a distinctly more feminine energy. She knew that if he and Kirk managed to get over their egos and fears and talk to each other, the brilliance of their partnership --- their marriage --- would rival the stars in the sky.
“Will you please talk to him?” she asked. “I simply want you to be happy.”
“I know,” he said. “But I want him to be happy.”
In light of new information, Nyota thought that she might have to reconsider her policy of nonintervention.
☆☆☆
Leonard was already seated at their typical lunch table when Nyota arrived. She had been caught up in a particularly knotty translation, and the captain had been concerned their newest encryption level had already been broken. She was running late, and feeling agitated, and was unwilling to beat around the bush any longer.
“Len,” she said. “I need your assistance.”
“Oh?” He raised an eyebrow at her tone. “Is there a bee in your bonnet?”
“There is,” she said. She dropped her voice. “Has Kirk talked to you any more about his feelings?”
“Only every weekend for the past six months.”
“And there’s been no change?”
Leonard gave her a side-eyed glance. “What’s it to you, Miss Uhura?”
She sighed and prepared to lay her cards on the table. “Correct me if I’m wrong. But the captain is in love with Mr. Spock.”
“Yes,” he said quietly.
“But he won’t say anything because he’s a professional, because Spock is Vulcan and allergic to public emotions, and because he values their friendship too much to mess it up. Am I still on track?” Leonard looked suspicious, but he nodded. “I have it on good authority that Spock feels the same, but won’t act on it because he doesn’t want to subject Mr. Flights of Fancy to an unbreakable marriage bond.”
Leonard’s eyes widened. Then he frowned. “So Spock feels so strongly about the captain that he would bond with him, but won’t say anything because he doesn’t want to force the captain to commit. And Kirk feels so strongly about Spock that he wants to commit to, and I quote, a ‘forever kind of love,’ but he won’t say anything because he doesn’t want to subject Spock to having to deal with his feelings.”
“That seems to be the case.”
Leonard frowned again, deeper, etching every line in his face into stone, before howling with laughter and smacking his knee. “Those two idiots deserve each other,” he said, wiping his eyes when he could breathe again. He took a deep breath. “So how are we going to do this?”
Nyota grinned. Despite his grouchy exterior, she knew she could count on Leonard to be in cahoots immediately. “Listen,” she said. “I’ve read a lot of romance novels, and wooed a man or two. Here’s what I was thinking.”
☆☆☆
Step 1: Forced Proximity (Completed)
Nyota was on her third translated Andorian poem of her promised five when the conniving crewman she’d enlisted instant-messaged her.
> Lt. Karros: K in position. I pulled some wires - no real damage, but annoying warning signals. S being sent to investigate.
>NUhura: Thank you! Keep me updated. Poems being sent soon.
> Karros: THANK YOU
She bent her head back to her translations -- credits would be too easy to track, so in exchange for Lieutenant Karros’s assistance with her project, she had offered to translate some poetry from Andorian to Standard for Karros’s nefarious purposes. And by ‘nefarious,’ Nyota meant only that Karros’s attempts to woo an Andorian stationed on another ship were sweet if ill-timed. Far be it from her to criticize the desires of the heart.
>Karros: K and S both in position. Jeffries tube sealed.
>NUhura: [Attachment: Do You Trust This Sender? Cybersecurity Is Everyone’s Prime Directive.] andorianpoems1-3.pdf.
>NUhura: Good work :) more to come!
When the “assistance requested” message came through from the maintenance panel in the tube Kirk and Spock had been trapped in together, Uhura set up a pretty little software package that sent the request on a very circuitous route through the Enterprise’s brain before arriving at Commander Scotty’s workstation. She didn’t intend to leave the boys in there for long; just enough to get some quality face-to-face time.
By the time the captain and Spock appeared on the bridge, Nyota had translated the last two poems, sent them off to her new favorite Security personnel, and schooled her face and body to reveal nothing except a friendly relief that they had arrived. Body language was a language unto itself and Nyota was nothing if not an exemplary communications officer, after all. Kirk’s eyes were light and his face was twisted up in a grin, and even Spock was not at his most austere. Preliminary success, she thought, and she smiled prettily and innocently at Spock when he looked her way.
Step 2: Hurt/Comfort (Failed successfully?)
Having a new relationship to look forward to on the ship was quickly becoming one of the joys of Nyota’s life. Leonard had deputized Christine Chapel to help Nyota brainstorm and scheme after he kicked Nyota out of his office, shouting, “I’m a doctor, not a kidnapper!” after she tried to convince him to give her chloroform. Despite Christine’s quiet demeanor, she had a wicked sense of humor and few qualms about emotional manipulation. Nyota discovered, to her delighted surprise, that she and Christine also had a very similar taste in novels, especially regarding certain flavors of pulp fiction from twentieth-century Earth.
She and Christine had been planning their next move in her quarters --- figuring out how to lock Kirk and Spock into their quarters without alerting Scotty or giving them time to escape through their conveniently shared bathroom --- when the red alert went off. All thoughts of romance fled from her mind as Christine ran to Medbay and Nyota sprinted to the bridge.
“The Klingons beat us here,” Sulu said grimly as she skidded into her seat, kicking her hapless relief off the bridge. She jammed her earpiece in and closed her eyes to concentrate. His Klingon abilities were good, but hers were better.
Spock and the captain had beamed down on what was supposed to be a quick check-in on implementation of a treaty that had recently been signed between the Federation and the planet’s government, and their mission had gone to shit almost immediately. The governor was dead, it seemed, her seat filled by a Klingon general whose name she recognized from horrible reports of cruelty on other planets. Her stomach turned to lead as she translated his grunts, coming through Spock’s open comm, full of static and wrath.
Then, she found that she suddenly did not need to translate any longer, because General V’Tar had switched to Standard.
“Uhura, what’s happening?” Scotty, acting captain, clenched the arms of the center chair. She switched the audio from her earpiece into the overhead speakers so the rest of the bridge crew could hear. Clever Spock had left his comm line open so that they could hear what was going on.
“You intend to colonize a planet for resources your ships don’t even use? What good does that do you?” Jim, unflappable in the face of danger, sounded genuinely curious.
“This isn’t about resources, Captain Kirk,” V’Tar said. “This is about you.” Nyota’s stomach dropped. Something was about to go very wrong.
“About me?” Confusion, and the slightest hint of worry leaked into Kirk’s words. Nyota’s hand flew to her mouth. She could hear it in V’Tar’s voice: they had been set up. She pulled up everything that she could find about V’Tar on her console and scanned through his known history. Oh no. Oh no.
She called Chekov. “Pavel, you have to get them out right now! The Klingons are here for revenge!”
“I’m trying, I’m trying! The signal is weak --- I almost got them!”
“Uhura, explain.” Scotty’s voice was strained with tension.
“This general was on Organia --- Spock embarrassed the Klingons when the mind sifter didn’t work --- this was a trap!”
Over the comm, V’Tar said, “Klingons believe that the leader is responsible for the behavior of all subordinates. What do you think, Captain Kirk?”
Uhura heard Kirk gauge his response, and he inhaled before saying, “Well, I think---”
“I disagree,” Spock said.
“Oh?” V’Tar said. “You disagree, hybrid trash?” Nyota snarled.
“The captain did not ruin your mind machine,” Spock said calmly. “I did.”
“Commander, be quiet,” Jim said. His voice was brittle.
“I almost got them, almost,” Chekov said. “One more second, medical on standby-”
“I’ve wanted to put your dog down for years, Captain Kirk,” said V’Tar.
“I’ve got them!” Chekov cried. A disruptor fired. Spock exhaled sharply. Kirk cried out, “No!” Spock’s comm link dropped.
There was silence on the bridge. Then Chekov’s voice over the comms: “Got them!”
Scotty roared, “Take us out, Mr. Sulu!” Nyota tossed her earpiece onto her console and dashed into the turbolift. “Transporter!”
The transporter room was in pure chaos. There was a pack of nurses surrounding someone prone on the transporter pad. Nyota heard Leonard’s voice, steady in the storm, calling for hypos and hands and support. “Three, two, one - lift!” A collective surge of movement --- six nurses, led by Leonard, ran for the turbolift. His hands were covered in green blood. Someone called, “Medbay!” The door slid shut and whisked them away.
Nyota turned back to the pad. Jim knelt where he had been revealed, arms resting on his thighs in front of him. He stared into the middle distance, face slack with shock. There was green blood across his uniform, dripping down his fingers, sprayed up onto his jaw and the side of his neck.
“Hi, captain,” she said, and stepped up to kneel next to him. “Can you look at me?” His face turned towards hers, but his eyes were unfocused, staring somewhere over her shoulder.
“He…”
“I know, honey.”
“He took that shot for me.”
“I know, honey.”
Finally, Jim’s eyes met hers. Her heart broke for him. “Why would he do that?”
Because he loves you. “You need to ask him that. But I think you know.”
He shook his head, and Nyota could see unshed tears shining in his eyes.
“Yes,” she said. “You have to promise me that when he pulls through, you’re going to have a conversation with him about it.” She stood and tugged on his arm, and he came pliantly with her. “Promise me,” she insisted.
“I promise,” he said, and he let her tow him to Medbay, let her wash off his hands and scrub Spock’s blood off his neck and face, and she held his hand as they both sat outside the surgical suite.
Leonard stepped out three hours later, more haggard than Nyota had ever seen him. They stood together, and when Jim squeezed her hand a little too tightly she didn’t complain.
“Bones, please,” Jim said.
“You’re a damn fool, Jim Kirk. When he comes out of the trance, you are going to tell him.” At ‘trance,’ Jim and Nyota sagged with relief against each other.
“Who died and made you captain?” Jim muttered, but he stepped in and hugged Leonard tightly before he had even had the chance to wash his hands. After Leonard walked away to scrub down and a little more of the tension had left Jim’s shoulders, he gave Nyota a side-eye. “You and Bones wouldn’t happen to have collaborated on your very specific instructions just now, would you?”
“No, sir,” she said innocently.
“Good,” he said, hands on his hips, and then he dropped the posturing. He scrubbed one broad hand across his face and looked up at the ceiling before looking back at her. He said quietly, “I had convinced myself that, as long as he hadn’t turned me down, I still had a chance. I wasn’t ready to lose that yet.”
What could she say that wouldn’t directly betray Spock’s trust? She was saved from responding by the blessed appearance of Christine, who said, “Would you like to see him?” They followed her down a hallway to a private room. As Nyota passed Christine, the taller woman passed a soothing hand down her back, and Nyota turned back to smile at her. Christine smiled sadly at her and shut the door behind them.
Spock looked so small, lying in the hospital bed. Nyota had never known him as anything but stalwart and steady, her closest friend on the Enterprise. She heard Jim stifle a noise in his throat. Spock’s chest rose and fell, but the majority of it was wrapped in bandages. Bruising spread in green lines like lightning away from the puncture wound, and he was developing black eyes from the trauma of impact.
“Spock,” Jim said miserably. There were two chairs, one on either side, and Nyota steered him to one before taking the other. They sat in silence with Spock as his body healed, until there was a knock at the door some time later.
“Lieutenant Uhura, we need you,” Chekov said. His eyes flicked from her to Jim to Spock. She stood immediately. “Thank you, Pavel,” she said. She bent down, pressed her lips to Spock’s forehead and thought at him, Heal fast. I love you. Then she walked to the door.
Something compelled her to look back. Jim sat with his head cradled in his hands. “Jim,” she said softly, holding the door. He looked up at her, and the naked emotion in his eyes was almost too much to translate. “I don’t think he would mind if you touched him. It might bring him comfort.”
The hope in Jim’s eyes made her heart constrict, and she turned away. As the door closed behind her, she saw Jim slide his hand into Spock’s where it lay near the edge of the bed, and he pressed his forehead into Spock’s arm. “Don’t leave me,” he said, muffled by the stiff cotton sheets. She left them to it.
Step 3: ????
Nyota and Scotty reported the events with the Klingons to Starfleet HQ. “Well, that’s a disappointment,” Admiral April huffed, and shuffled the papers on his desk. “That planet had strategic promise. But I’m glad that Commander Spock will make a full recovery.”
“We are as well, sir,” Scotty said.
“Thank you for checking in. Keep us appraised of any more unexpected conflict, and try not to start any fights.”
“A lady doesn’t start fights,” Nyota said primly.
“But she finishes them, hmm, Lieutenant?” Admiral April’s eyes sparkled before he nodded to them and cut the connection.
“He’s got your number, missy,” Scotty said, and chucked her affectionately on one shoulder.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said, and followed him back to the bridge. They had warped to a clear patch of space, a safe distance from any contentious areas, and were awaiting future orders. In the meantime, Scotty had requested downtime for repairs and Nyota was updating the ship’s records on V’Tar and this sector to reflect the day’s events.
Her padd pinged with an instant message.
> CC: He’s awake!
Step 4: Profit
In the spirit of allowing Kirk and Spock to at least start the very necessary conversation between them, she allowed for thirty minutes between Christine’s message and her arrival. Nyota thought that she might have left skid marks on the clean tile floors of Medbay if she had raced in any faster after those thirty minutes were up. She didn’t see Christine or Leonard, and the nurses who did see her didn’t stop her from running back to the private room where she had left Kirk and Spock six hours previously.
She knocked. “Enter,” came Spock’s voice. She allowed herself to melt with relief at his solid, steady tone for one moment before collecting herself and letting herself in.
They were beautiful. Kirk sat in the chair that she had left him in, but his spine was straight now, and his shoulders were broad and square. The light had returned to his eyes, and his mouth curved in an easy smile. His right hand was on his hip, angling him towards her in the doorway, but his left hand was on the bed. More accurately, it was clasped between both of Spock’s, held in Spock’s lap. Spock was sitting upright, the healthy green flush returned to his cheeks. Though both eyes were still blacked and his entire torso was wrapped in bandages, he sat up straight, his composure returned. His eyes, when they met Nyota’s and then slid to Kirk’s, were warm and crinkled at the edges - the happiest she had ever seen him. And was that the slightest hint of a smile that tugged at one corner of his mouth? Leonard leaned against the wall on the other side, arms crossed against his chest, one hand gesturing in a way that made her think that she had interrupted a lecture.
Oh, her beloved, stubborn, frustrating brothers. “I believe we may owe you a debt of gratitude, Lieutenant,” Kirk said, smiling. She waved off the idea and took the seat between Spock and Leonard. Len squeezed one shoulder, and she patted it.
“You can make it up to me by scheduling us for some shore leave, captain,” she said, and Kirk threw his head back and laughed. She brushed one hand along Spock’s forearm, thrilling at his warmth and vivacity. Spock called her “my dear Nyota,” and Leonard called her a mastermind, and Kirk didn’t say anything else about her scheming.
Except for the presence of one little uncharitable thought in the back of her head, it was the best day of her year.
Step 5: Complete Victory for the Secret Gamemaster
Leonard kicked Nyota out of Medbay after the shift change. She complained, “But you’re letting Kirk stay!”
“Kirk is both the captain and Spock’s soon-to-be bondmate. You are neither of those things, and I think you might be wanted elsewhere.”
She rolled her eyes. “I wish. See you in the morning, Leonard.”
“Goodnight, darlin’,” he said, and he shut the turbodoor to Medbay behind her. Nyota took her sweet time wandering back to her quarters. She was so happy for Spock and Kirk, truly. She wanted nothing more than for them to find the love they both deserved in each other. But she didn’t think it was unreasonable for her to be the slightest bit jealous. The past few months had been wonderful, not because she loved to meddle, per se --- but because she had had compatriots. Meddlers-in-arms, after hours. She had had Christine. Now that their mission was complete, she wouldn’t have the same excuse to see Christine at odd hours, scheming in her quarters like they were having a sleepover. She found that the loss left her feeling bereft.
After Nyota was done wandering the halls in her own little pity party, she let her feet take her back to her quarters. She was a grown woman, after all, and could attend to her own needs just fine. But there was someone standing in front of her door; a tall, leggy, beautiful someone. Christine straightened up when Nyota rounded the corner.
“This is a nice surprise,” Nyota said, and smiled up at her friend. “I hope I haven’t kept you waiting.”
“I’m glad you think so,” Christine said, in that surprisingly deep voice that Nyota loved. Her grey eyes glinted in the harsh lights of the hallway. “May I come in?”
“Certainly,” Nyota said, and keyed open her door. She pulled off her boots and stood on the carpet in her stockinged feet, turning to face Christine. “What can I do for you?”
“Nyota, I’ve so enjoyed the past few weeks.”
“I have too,” she said. She watched Christine carefully, but Christine was the only person she couldn’t read. The woman was more stoic than Spock, not that she’d ever say that to either of them. Her shoulders were square, long arms clasped in front of her, weight balanced on both feet. Nyota smiled encouragingly. Is that all she had come here to say?
Christine took a step towards her. “I have always thought of you as a good friend, but I feel like I’ve discovered a new side of you since we’ve started spending time together off-shift.” She took another step forward. “It’s a side I like quite a lot.”
Nyota felt her cheeks warm. Christine was a few inches taller than her, and each step forward made her have to tilt her head back to maintain eye contact.
“If you don’t feel the same, I understand,” Christine said. “But if you do, I would like to continue to see you. Outside of the bridge and Medbay.” She took one final step. Her body language was now unmistakeable: if Nyota would let her, she would close the space between them. Nyota found that she wanted Christine to do it, very much.
Nyota reached across the gap and took Christine’s hand. She smiled at her. “I would like that very much.” Christine stepped forward, laced their fingers together, and kissed her. Christine was warm, and soft, and feminine in the way that Nyota liked. The little sprig of disappointment that had discolored her joy earlier melted away as Christine lifted Nyota from the ground and carried her to the bed without breaking their kiss.
Later, when Christine had stepped into the bathroom to brush her teeth before they went to sleep, Nyota checked her padd. She had one instant-message.
>RealMcCoy: You’re not the only matchmaker on the ship, you know
>RealMcCoy: Tell Chapel I said hi :-)
Nyota’s jaw dropped open as she reread the message and processed the implications. McCoy had bowed out of the planning early in Operation Kirk and Spock. For months he had said, “I’m too busy for these games,” all the while knowing that Nyota and Christine would be spending more and more time together.
>NUhura: YOU SLY DOG!!!
She and Christine sent him a case of Andorian ale.

~ To Catch A Selkie ~
1789; aboard the sailing ship Enterprise
Montgomery Scott - it was still strange to get used to a last name - smiled melancholically as he watched the sea, that was illuminated by the setting sun. His home. The place he had grown up in. The place he could never return to.
He still remembered how almost one year ago a man - a doctor - had kidnapped his little brother and had taken Montgomery's coat. The coat made from his fur. The only way for a Selkie to turn back into their seal form.
Aye, a Selkie. That was what he was. What he had always been. But it had been taken from him. His life. His family. His coat.
The horrible man had burned it. And by doing that he had destroyed the Selkie's life.
Montgomery had to stay in his human form. Forever.
"Hey there, Monty. Is everything alright?"
The Selkie blinked in surprise when arms wrapped around him from behind and he let out a heavy sigh, snuggling closer to the person standing behind him.
"Aye, mo ghràdh."
His love. The man who had saved him. The man who had taught him how humans talked and how they behaved. The man who was always there for him.
Dr. Leonard Horatio McCoy.
At first, the Southern man had only been a friend and a teacher for the Selkie, but over time their relationship had turned into something else. A... romance.
Montgomery loved McCoy with all his heart and he knew that the man would do anything to protect him from this still strange world.
"You don't sound too sincere. Something is on your mind, isn't it?"
Slowly, Montgomery turned around in the doctor's arms and placed his hands on the man's chest. McCoy knew him just too well.
"It's just... I miss me home. This... whole big world that ye show me; it's... gorgeous, but whenever I watch the sunset I long to be back at home. Back... with me family."
His mother. His grandfather. His brother. He just wanted to swim with them again, wanted to play and cuddle with them.
But he knew that it was impossible.
"Oh, Montgomery, if only I could help you. You know that I'd do anything-"
A weak smile crossed the Selkie's lips as he placed a hand on his love's cheek.
"Aye, I know, Leonard. And I'm very grateful for it."
Before the doctor could say another word, Montgomery caught his mouth with his own and kissed him gently. A way of humans showing their endearment for each other.
Once their lips parted, their was a soft smile on McCoy's face. He gently grabbed Montgomery's hands.
"Come on. Let's get some sleep, shall we? Tomorrow we'll arrive at our next point of destination."
Montgomery nodded slowly, however, he couldn't help but glance over his shoulder one more time.
A new country was awaiting them. A new adventure. And he really wondered what Australia might look like.
~
Australia was a truly magical place. There were so many new things to see and discover. Although Montgomery, who was used to the cold of the north, got a little too warm, he enjoyed exploring the area. Especially because the usually grumpy McCoy was running around beaming with joy.
Of course he was. The sunshine probably reminded him of his home in America. The doctor had often told Montgomery about his home. Of the fields, the plants, the fruit.
He had always promised that he would show the Selkie everything one day after their journey with the Enterprise. And despite his own homesickness, Montgomery was already looking forward to getting to know the place where the man he loved had grown up.
They had only been in the village for two days when Montgomery woke up in his cabin one morning to find the space in the bed next to him empty. Confused, he tilted his head and smelled the pillow.
No... McCoy hadn't been there all night. The familiar smell of him was too old.
Slowly, the Selkie got to his feet and dressed. Even after a year, it was still strange for him to wear the warm, scratchy clothes of humans, but he did it because it was appropriate.
His path led him through the entire ship and his heart beat faster.
"Has anyone seen Dr. McCoy? Anyone?"
No one could give him a positive answer. The uneasy feeling spread more and more through Montgomery's body and it wasn't until he met Sulu and Chekov, who had been keeping watch that night, that he finally got the answer he was looking for.
"The captain and the doctor are not back from their shore leave yet," Sulu explained and Chekov grinned across both cheeks.
"They probably had too much to drink at some place and then fell asleep on the spot."
Montgomery just shook his head, his eyes wide with worry. No... McCoy would never just leave him alone. Not even for one night. Of course he had told Montgomery that he had an appointment with the captain in the evening, but he had promised to be back in the morning. He had promised!
Without even waiting for another word from the sailors, Montgomery ran off the ship.
He had to find him! He had to find McCoy!
The Selkie looked around in panic. Where should he start looking? Where could the captain and the doctor have gone?
His feet carried him as if of their own accord and he hurried towards the village, shuddering. He hated it. He hated being among so many unknown people by himself.
But he had to find McCoy!
His eyes wandered down every alley, into every building, and yet he almost ran past a crucial side street. He quickly came to a halt, almost stumbled, and rushed to the motionless person lying on the ground.
"Captain!"
A soft moan was all he got for an answer at first, however the blond man's eyes quickly fluttered open.
"Scotty?" It wasn't much more than a slurred murmur. Aye, the captain had chosen a nickname for the Selkie a while ago. Montgomery was still getting used to it though.
"What happened? Are ye alright, sir?"
At first, Kirk looked confused, then he chuckled.
"Oh, I'm... I'm perfectly fine. I had a great night, met a nice lady-" The captain hiccuped. Only then did Montgomery notice the smell of alcohol all over his counterpart. The man wasn't hurt. He was just drunk.
The Selkie looked around.
"Where's Leonard?"
Kirk blinked a few times, obviously trying to remember the last night, but eventually he shrugged, his eyes closing again.
"Don't know," he muttered and before Montgomery could even try to wake him up again, a voice sounded from behind him.
"Are you looking for the man who accompanied this young fellow last night?"
Scotty's head whirled around and at the end of the street, he saw a young lass, wearing a pretty dress.
He hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
"I think I saw him going into that house over there."
With a nod of her head, the woman indicated at a building close by and Montgomery quickly got to his feet. He'd take care of the drunken captain later. For now, McCoy was all that mattered.
The lady once again pointed at the house she had talked about and without thinking, Montgomery made his way over to it.
Even though McCoy had taught him that one was supposed to knock, the Selkie's worry about his love was too big. He grabbed the doorknob and quietly entered the house.
He was greeted by several smells. Most of them obviously belonged to women. Montgomery wrinkled his nose. What was this place?
There seemed to be no one at home. At least not downstairs.
The Selkie looked into every room, then made his way up the stairs. He winced when he stepped onto a creaking step and for a moment he feared that the owner of the house had heard him.
However, his worry about his own sake soon changed when he heard muffled noises coming from a room.
He knew that voice. He knew it quite well.
'Leonard!'
No longer caring about being quiet, the Selkie ran upstairs and burst into the room where the noise had come from.
What he saw made his blood freeze.
There he was! McCoy! Tied to a chair, gagged with a piece of cloth, a huge flat wound on his forehead.
"Mo ghràdh!"
As fast as he could, Montgomery ran over to the doctor who was shaking his head violently. He tried to say something, but the gag in his mouth made it impossible.
Montgomery was just about to remove the cloth when he heard the door behind them close with a loud thud. He whirled around and saw a man with a riffle gun standing next to the closed door. There was a smug grin on his face.
"Gotcha!"
Once again, McCoy tried to talk and despite Montgomery staring at the other man in shock, he removed the cloth with one hand.
The doctor coughed for a bit, then glared at the man at the door.
"You bastard! You won't get through with this, Mudd!"
The man - Mudd - only laughed.
"Oh, but I already did. I got what I wanted. And you really were the perfect bait, doctor. Your Selkie really loves you, huh?"
Montgomery's eyes widened in horror.
No... no, no, no. No one was allowed to talk about it! No member of the crew talked about Montgomery's origins!
"How... how would ye know?"
Mudd's grin only widened as he stepped closer to his two prisoners, gun ready to shoot.
"It's easy to get information out of strangers. All you need is a pretty lady, lots of alcohol, a young stupid captain..."
Montgomery shook his head in disbelief. No. Not Kirk!
But if it really had been the captain who had told Mudd about his special crewmember, then... the lady who had told him about the house... it had all been a trick!
"A real Selkie. Back in Britain we talked a lot about these Scottish creatures. I bet the royal family would like to have a pet. Only in exchange for a lot of money, of course."
With a wide grin, Mudd lunged at Montgomery who quickly backed away.
"You don't need him! He's useless for you! His coat was destroyed and he can't turn back into a seal!"
McCoy tried to convince the man who had kidnapped him, at the same time pulling at his restraints, but Mudd didn't care.
"Oh, I'm pretty sure once we're back in Britain, I can find a nice seal and skin it. Then we can test it out with a new coat."
Montgomery gritted his teeth in anger. Not only had this monster hurt and kidnapped his love, he also planned on hurting and killing his kind.
That was enough!
He didn't think too much about his actions and jumped at his counterpart, tackling him down to the floor.
Mudd, who was obviously surprised by the sudden outburst, lost his gun in the process and yelped in shock as the Selkie started to choke him, yelling out angry swears in a language the man didn't understand.
"Monty!"
Montgomery heard McCoy's voice but it didn't reach him. He was blinded by his rage. He just wanted to kill this man!
He didn't know how it happened, but somehow Mudd managed to break free from his grip. In panic, the man crawled across the floor and grabbed his riffle gun.
A shot rang out and Montgomery yelped in pain when he felt the bullet enter his shoulder. He fell to the ground.
"No!"
McCoy. His love. He was worried about him. He... he was scared.
"Monty, no!"
Montgomery's eyes moved from his love's panicked face to Mudd who was getting up on his knees again, ready to fire once more. His eyes were filled with anger.
"I'll kill you, you stupid-"
He didn't get to finish his sentence for suddenly three bullets hit him and he stumbled backwards, staring at the door in shock, before he crashed right through the window.
For a long moment, Montgomery looked at the shattered glass, then his eyes moved over to the door.
Sulu, Chekov, Spock. They... had saved him. And they had saved McCoy.
"Monty! Monty, are you okay?"
The Selkie turned his head around so that he could look into McCoy's eyes. He nodded slowly. Aye... he... he was just fine.
"He's losing blood! Hurry up and untie me! Quick!"
Montgomery watched as Sulu and Chekov both ran over to the doctor and started to loosen the restraints. He blinked a few times.
Blood? He... was losing blood?
His eyes fell onto his right shoulder and he stared in disbelief at the red liquid soaking through his shirt.
And seconds later, darkness fell upon him.
~
When he woke up, he was lying in his bed aboard the ship. He looked around in confusion, but soon enough calmed down when he saw a familar person sitting next to him.
"Len..."
The doctor's head turned to face him and a gentle smile formed on his lips.
"Hey there, Montgomery. I see you are awake already."
The Selkie noticed a bandage wrapped around McCoy's head and his eyes widened in shock.
The dark-haired man quickly seemed to notice what Montgomery was staring at, so he smiled soothingly.
"Oh, don't worry about that. It's gonna leave a nasty scar, but it will heal. Just like your shoulder."
Montgomery's eyes moved to his own body and he saw a similar bandage as the one his love was wearing.
"Ye... ye saved me."
Quickly a hand found its way onto his cheek and a thumb gently stroked across his skin.
"Of course I did. Just like you saved me, Monty."
Montgomery blinked a few times, trying to remember what had happened. He sighed.
"No... Mr. Spock and the others saved you."
McCoy chuckled softly.
"Technically, yes. But they only searched for me after you ran away. If you hadn't had a strange feeling, then they would never have thought that something was actually wrong."
Montgomery nodded slowly. Aye, maybe that was true. Another man came to his mind.
"Is... the captain alright?"
At hearing that name, the doctor groaned in annoyance.
"Yes, he is. He got lots of sleep and water. And a good telling-off from both me and Miss Uhura."
Montgomery couldn't help but smile at hearing that. He was quite sure that Kirk already regretted everything very much.
"I'm sure he will come around later on to apologize."
"Aye."
The Selkie's face darkened and he swallowed hardly. "And... this man? Mudd?"
McCoy sighed.
"Dead. We told the locals about what had happened and they said that it had often been speculated that he was a criminal. Now they had their prove."
The Selkie nodded once more. Mudd had been a horrible man. He was really glad that he couldn't hurt anyone else anymore. No human or Selkie or whatever kind.
"But let's forget about this whole thing, shall we? Let's... just be happy that we're alive."
Montgomery's eyes met McCoy's and in them he could only see relief and love. The same love that the Selkie felt for him.
"Aye. Let's be happy."

Yeehaw! Today I just couldn’t make ‘rodeo clown’ fit my story, so I used the week’s prompt.
When the Cactus Blooms
(20.) Week 4: Saddlesore
Everyone turned out to the yard a few days later when their guests had to leave. It had been a lively few days and though McCoy tried his best not to show it, he would miss them. Miss Roberts had made some delicious things to eat that reminded McCoy of when he was little. She had insisted everyone call her Barbie, but McCoy just couldn’t be broken of his manners towards a female guest.
The two younger girls had been delighted to be called ‘miss’ before their names. The youngest, Miss Chelsea, had stood a little straighter and her eyes twinkled every time McCoy called her that.
Thank yous and hugs were given freely many times over before the three girls and Mr. Carson were safely loaded into the coach, the two horses trotting away down toward the gate. Slowly everyone drifted off from waving, leaving McCoy standing with Scotty.
“You make such good friends everywhere you go?” McCoy asked with a smile.
“I made friends with ye didn’t I?” Scotty retorted with his own smile.
“Suppose I walked myself into that one,” McCoy chuckled.
“Come on love, let’s go work.”
Chekov and Jaylah were standing at the paddock fence when McCoy and Scotty turned the corner by the stables.
“Never?” Chekov was asking.
“Once. When I was little.”
“Jaylah has never ridden a horse,” Chekov told McCoy and Scotty when he noticed them.
“That’s not unusual, lad. Christine and Uhura don’t ride that often. Lots of people ride in a wagon or coach,” Scotty said.
“Do you wanna ride?” McCoy asked the young woman.
“Maybe,” Jaylah replied quietly.
“Honey is a sweet horse.” McCoy gave his normal two note whistle and across the field, Honey lifted her head. “C’mere girl!” he called.
“We can teach you,” Chekov said eagerly.
“There’s a girl,” McCoy laughed as Honey pushed her head across the fence at him. He lifted his hand to pat her neck.
“May I?” Jaylah asked hesitantly.
“Yep. Right up here by her ears. She likes a scratch there, don’t ya Honey?”
Cautiously Jaylah reached up. Chekov was grinning. McCoy winked at Scotty. They both could see the younger man’s interest.
“Tomorrow say,” McCoy looked at Jaylah. “We’ve got work to finish now, but tomorrow we could plan a lesson. Go for a ride down the creek and the river. Have a picnic. What d’ya think?”
Jaylah’s eyes lit up.
“All of you?”
McCoy looked at Scotty and they both nodded.
“Of course!” Chekov exclaimed.
“I would like that,” Jaylah said firmly.
“That’s settled then,” Scotty said.
“You’ll love it!” Chekov smiled at Jaylah. “When the wind is racing past and your heart pounds with every hoof beat!” His face flushed as he looked over at McCoy and Scotty.
“We’ll see you two,” McCoy said quickly to save Chekov anymore embarrassing himself.
The next morning found McCoy in the kitchen after breakfast with Jaylah. Uhura had found them a basket and they were packing it with a lunch time meal for four.
“Dr. Bones…” Jaylah’s voice was nervous and he could see her eyes were too when he turned to look.
“Just Leonard, Jaylah. You can call me by my name,” he smiled at her gently.
“Leonard…” she got the name out hesitantly. “Would it be easier to ride… if I wore pants?” She gestured to her legs hidden by her skirt.
McCoy couldn’t hide a small chuckle.
“You wear what will be comfortable for you sweetheart. No one’s gonna judge anyone around here.”
“I would like to then,” Jaylah said with a small smile.
McCoy stood back and regarded her. “I’ll be back. You good taking care of the rest of this?”
Jaylah nodded, and McCoy headed out.
He found Chekov in the stables helping Scotty saddle the horses.
“I need your pants,” McCoy called.
“Uhh, it might be a bit early love,” Scotty said, fighting not to blush.
“No,” McCoy laughed. “I need Pavel’s.”
“Is there something I should know?” Scotty asked archly.
Chekov was staring at the doctor, red faced. McCoy ran a hand over his face.
“I need one of your pairs. You and Jaylah are about the same height. I’d ask Jim, but he’s bigger around than her. I keep trying to get him to eat better…”
“Why do you need my pants?” Chekov still looked confused.
“Jaylah doesn’t have any, so we’re gonna borrow a pair of yours,” McCoy explained.
“Ah.”
McCoy could see Chekov still didn’t quite understand, but the young man headed out quickly and McCoy took over the saddling up.
“She thinks it might be easier for riding,” he explained to Scotty.
Soon the four were horseback and following the creek. Jaylah had been unusually timid as they explained basics to her, but once up and going on Honey, she found her rhythm and was her normal self soon enough.
Chekov rode beside her, offering advice and encouragement. McCoy and Scotty followed behind, content to let the young pair set the pace.
“She’s a quick learner,” Scotty said with admiration.
“That she is,” McCoy couldn’t help agreeing.
A pleasant picnic, a few races and a leisurely ride home finished their day. Jaylah had enjoyed herself immensely and McCoy was happy they could lift her grief for a bit.
Though he was unsure about that the next morning when she didn’t show for breakfast. He made his way to her door after and knocked.
“Jaylah?”
“Oh! Leonard!” she called back.
“What’s wrong?” McCoy asked, ready to leap into action.
“I can’t move!”
“I’m coming in,” he warned and opened the door. “What’s wrong? What can’t move?”
“I hurt all over!”
“All over?”
“My legs won’t do what I tell them and my back hurts,” Jaylah told him, sounding very young in her worry.
It hit him a moment later and he had to stifle a laugh and hide a smile.
“It’s from riding,” he managed to say. “You’re not used to it. Your muscles got all moved around in new ways and you’re sore today.”
“Oh! I hate it!”
“I’ll send one of the gals in to help you. Getting up and moving will actually help more. You’ll be fine. I promise,” he said as he looked back from the doorway. “You’ll be fine.”
