WHEN THE SUN DIVES FT. KAZUHA ! content // commitment issues, (seemingly) unrequited, open ending, fem! reader, no beta read, implied confession, situationship, wrong implications on poker (i only know the game from casino royale 2006) <(_ _)>, one kys joke at the end notes // this is a oneshot there wont be a part two. divider is made by @cafekitsune. masterlist
although, kazuha was the one who did wander into places, appreciate their beauty but couldn't commit to living in one place since there was so much to see, you were the one who couldn't commit to a person.
well, he couldn't blame that on you. he couldn't either and that's what you two bonded over. that was until kazuha caught feelings for you, he hates to admit it because the reason why isn't romantic if he wanted to tell you his real feelings towards you.
it was because of the way you complimented his work. not as if it's just an art piece but as if it was life itself. just by thinking about it, he could feel his face flush at the thought of you. he stared at his popcorn ceiling blankly. maybe, it's too early to think over his feelings for you. it's what?
three am? but this time is when you usually text him or call him. twelve am or four am, it doesn't matter. as long as he could hear your voice or feel like he's near you, physically or virtually.
he waited a little bit, waiting for your ringtone. after a while, no ringtone was ringing through his room. he rolled on his side, it's time to go back to sleep.
ding!
quickly, he rolled to the other side of the bed, grabbing his phone from the nightstand. the blue light illuminated his face, burning his eyes a little.
[notification +1: thecoolestartie has liked a video you reposted]
"i really have to turn off that notification off of tiktok." he mumbled, clicking off his phone. he deflated, degrading himself for believing the routine the both of you had.
no shit, name wouldn't have the same routine. maybe she's talking to that guy again.
he groaned as he buried his face into his pillow. he peeked at his phone again just to check the time, totally not to see you or anything.
still nothing.
unless??? he checked again just in case.
nothing.
.
oh god, what did you do to him? he dug himself into his bed, maybe this would his grave when he died out of embarrassment, while digging himself his own deathbed, his phone fell from the mattress.
it vibrated,
ding!
despite his efforts to stop himself from reaching over his bed and ignore the notification, his hand found his phone, loosing his balance when he saw the notification.
[ name <3: wanna call?]
he fell off his bed, frantically unlocking his phone. typing out words that only ended up look like a bunch of jumble mumbos.
[kazuha: yeaysh but lemt me get my headphowns] [kazuha: you got what i mean right?]
[name <3: yes dw lmao] [name <3: waiting for you (◠‿◠)]
✦ ͏͏ ⸺͏͏ dialing name <3... ⊹ ˙ .
"kazuha, hello?" you said. your voice sounds as warm as ever. kazuha wished that he could create a ball of yarn from it, giving him eternal warmth. he didn't notice that you've been calling his name for at least four times.
"kazuha?"
"yes, sorry. i was thinking about what to write for a new thing." he said, making up something to sound believable. he realized afterwards that it sounded completely like utter nonsense, complete word vomit.
he knew that you didn't believe him but regardless, you've changed the subject. "i was thinking about taking you on a date."
kazuha's eyes widened, his voice cracking, "what?" he winced at the sound of it.
you added afterwards, "y'know, a platonic one." oh, of course, you did that for a reaction bait. "the new aquarium that opened in watatsumi island." he chuckled mostly out of embarrassment,
"oh, right, of course, i'd go." he could hear you laugh, imagining the smile that always made it to his daydreams of finally being yours.
"is that all you have to tell me?" kazuha asked. although it's stupid to hold onto to something that doesn't a guaranteed ending, he couldn't help but to abandon his old ways of thinking and hope that you wanted to tell him to be more than friends.
silence filled the call, only the ambience of cars in the background from the call.
"um..." hearing you be nervous sounded out of character for you, he was confused. did he hit a nerve?
"yeah?"
silence again.
"i think i..." you trailed off. you began to mumble but kazuha couldn't hear you.
needing you to clarify, "you?"
"i think i like..."
what a cliffhanger! you trailed off again and kazuha is hoping that this one wouldn't be another reason to have a reaction bait. between you two, this game was like poker. if he's right on the dot, he's shoving all his chips in the middle.
"to make the date on the day after tomorrow."
✦ ͏͏ ⸺͏͏ [kazuha kaedehara lost to name...] [official scores: kazuha: 99 ... name: 150]
"okay." kazuha hoped that his voice didn't give away his emotions. "goodnight?"
please say goodnight back. he just wants to wallow in his pain.
"um, i want to stay on call with you, is that okay?" you asked. shit.
his heart spoke before his brain could stop it, "always. it's always okay if its you."
he heard you exhale a laugh quietly, "thank you, kazuha."
"anytime."
[bonus:]
[name: childe i need you to stop infleuncing me to confess to him at night. i dont think he even likes me like that.] [tart: trust me, he does. you should ask him out and then confess or confess in the call. thats so romantic.] [name: if this goes wrong, im blaming you.] [tart: you only have yourself to blame cuz u overthink too much LMAO] [name: KYS]

NIGHTCORD AT 25:00 AGERE HEADCANONS
KANADE YOISAKI
☆ age range of 1-3
☆ so sleepy and cuddly, preferring to nap more than play.
☆ regressed for the first time due to stress, but now regresses mainly because of tiredness.
☆ loves petnames... makes her feel so small...
☆ was shy about telling her friends, but now she has the greatest carers!!
☆ warm milk is her favorite drink when little. she still has a big appetite for cup noodles too! she always makes sure to hold everything with two hands!!
☆ when shes little, she likes to spend time with mafuyu the most.. the get small together and cuddle and take naps... eepy babies...
☆ plays dress up with mizuki (letting mizuki pick outfits for her while she gets watches sleepily)
☆ occasional finger painting with ena. her paintings are usually very simple, or just a few dots, but ena always loves them and dotes on her!
MAFUYU ASAHINA
☆ age range of 2-5
☆ also quiet sleepy, not having much energy when regressed
☆ when she takes naps, she usually has a pacifier and all of the stuffed animals her friends have given her..
☆ easily entertained by watching aquarium videos online,
☆ too little to play a lot, but still enjoys being around her friends!! she isnt always verbal when regressed, so she is comfortable just laying next to someone and playing individually. (parallel play>>>)
☆ avid teether user, chewing on everything, if not a teether then her clothes... or whoever's available.
☆ loves playing with kanade's hair while shes little, making messy braids, which kanade doesnt have the heart to take out..
☆ has so many playful arguments with ena, usually babbling on mafuyus side.
☆ steals mizukis oversized clothes whenever they have a sleepover, but she looks so cute..!!
ENA SHINONOME
☆ age range of 7-10
☆ prides herself on being a "big sister" to the rest of niigo
☆ maintains her cute aesthetic while little, only wanting to play with toys she deems cute enough (her favorite is a little camera toy that she uses to take pictures of her and whoever is taking care of her/shes's little with.)
☆ the sassiest, little diva ever. she is a princess, and will NOT be accepting anything other than the best. (she deserves so much love shsjjs..,..)
☆ despite that, she is actually quite clingy, and always wants to be with someone...
☆ LOVES coloring and drawing; her drawings tend to get a little messier the smaller she is, but they always have the same amount of care put into them!
☆ she always wants to play with kanade the most.. but kanade falls asleep so fast... they take a nap together.
☆ her and mafuyu color occasionally when the two are small, but it usually results in ena whining about mafuyu coloring outside of the lines, and mafuyu continuing to do it anyways. (they fight like kittens but they love each other.)
☆ tried doing mizuki's makeup and hair... it was.. definitely something!! mizuki didnt care though, making sure to praise ena and tell her how much they loved it!!!!
MIZUKI AKIYAMA
☆ age range of 3-7
☆ so mischievous and silly when small, the toddler little kid ever...
☆ major enjoyer of dress up and pretend games, loving to dress up in fancy clothes and pretend to be a princess!!
☆ when it comes to agere gear, they can only use the cutest, pinkest, most decorated gear ever!! deco pacis, aesthetically pastel toys, cute sippies,, aaaaa
☆ very entertained by animes aimed for younger kids, especially magical girl animes!!
☆ instead of being nonverbal, little mizuki is the opposite. they always have something to say about anything, even if its just meaningless babbles.
☆ whenever kanade takes care of mizuki, most of the day is spent with the two of them cuddled up on the couch, mizuki on kanade's lap, as they watch cutesy cartoons.
☆ mizuki, after much pleading, managed to convince mafuyu to have regular playdates in the empty sekai. the favorite activity has become the two of them scheming (mainly mizu, but mafuyu helps a bit) and playing pranks on the virtual singers.
☆ when ena's the one taking care of them, they usually have outings to malls, cafes, and stores. mizuki is a very curious little one, so whenever they are out, ena always has a tight hold on mizuki's hand... and if they werent already feeling small, they feel so, so tiny with that caring gesture.

hi ira my good friend ira. here's a cool list for you;
of your pact characters, who is most likely to least likely installing viruses on the 'family' computer, and how are they doing it.
(i hope someone is trying to download boobs.exe)
OKAY WELL FIRST OF ALL i need to immediately share with you what is one of me + marina's favorite "viper squad + glyn" posts:
Tumblr media
anyway.
alan: it's an honest mistake. he was trying to download 100 free calming relaxing free animated aquarium water fish nature sounds lifestyle desktop animated background for windows computer desktop free
glyndwr: he is doing it on purpose because he thinks malware is interesting and he wants to study it. but he's not computer savvy enough (or patient enough) to set up like... a virtual quarantine clone of the desktop first or whatever. and also while he can spot scams from ten miles away there's something wrong with him and he takes them as a challenge. now it's everybody's problem
daimhin: they are downloading insane amounts of weird embarrassing porn and all the internet cooties that come with it. they are also somehow making it way, way worse when they freak the fuck out and try to obliterate all evidence of their crimes in a hysterical panic. if anyone is likely to actually completely brick the computer it's dav
damage: okay listen. you don't GET it. there were like FIVE hot girls, IN OUR AREA!!!, who wanted to talk to her RIGHT NOW. like, literally they were just messaging her while she was trying to watch fist of the north star on an illegal streaming website. those women tricked her.
donner: donner knows that you do not have to download pornography to watch it. he's fine
merrit: marina's original answer was "between alan and daimhin" but then when i was like "okay and how is he doing it" they changed their mind because, in reality, merrit is too anxious to actually try downloading anything. "the red button scares him"
lorelei: lorelei does not even have a cell phone. there is absolutely nothing on the computer that interests them. (he doesn't know that there's porn in there)

Eight days in Tokyo
Tumblr media
After three years we finally made it to Japan. Back in 2020, Robert and I originally planned to visit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, and then you-know-what came along. Fast-forward to this year, when, while checking my airline miles, I found I had enough to book us (awful, but virtually free) roundtrip economy tickets for an eight-day trip to Tokyo—so we went for it in mid-September.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note to self: wait until REAL autumn to go to Japan. I’m pretty sure I got heat exhaustion during our trip. The humidity was suffocating and made the real temp feel like 99º F and was severely tiring.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where we stayed
We stayed at the Dormy Inn Korakuen in Bunkyo City, right by the Tokyo Dome. It was reasonably priced in a quiet part of town. They sold me on the amenities, which included an onsite onsen—accompanied by a yogurt drink in the morning or ice cream bar at night—along with free ramen in the evenings, a massage chair (which we discovered far too late), and an extensive manga library.
We got a double room, and while I was preparing for it to be incredibly tiny based on what I’d heard about Japan hotel rooms, it wasn’t quite as small as I expected and held all our things with room for us to still move around.
What we planned
Tumblr media
Months ago we started compiling a Google map of all the places we wanted to go, made a reservation at a mini pig cafe, and bought a three-attraction pass using Klook primarily to visit Tokyo DisneySea. (There is apparently no other way for foreign tourists to get Disney tickets unless you have a Japan mailing address.) We later added the Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise and TeamLab Planets, which meant we had four scheduled events and were free to explore the rest of the time.
What we did
Day 1: travel day
From Narita airport we took the Skyliner to connect to another train to our hotel, which took over an hour and a half, but actually longer than that overall because the ticketing was confusing and we were jet lagged.
Finally we figured out we needed both a Suica card (which you can use on almost every train) and a dedicated Skyliner ticket to get to Tokyo proper. From there we used Google Maps, our most trusted ally, to navigate to Bunkyo City.
Tumblr media
The trains in Japan are clean and efficient and most stations play cheery recordings of bird songs. People line up in orderly fashion to board. The thing that most stood out to me, being from Seattle, is that there was not a hint of urine in any of the station elevators or hallways. Every place we went felt safe even at night. The trains seemingly go everywhere in the city and they’re easy to use with Google Maps, which even tells you which car to board for the best transfer. 10/10.
Day 2: Bunkyo City, Toshima City, and Harajuku
Tumblr media
We got breakfast at 7-Eleven, which carries all manner of food and drink and even blenders to make your smoothie and a microwave to heat up whatever food you bought. We accidentally ate in without telling the cashier. (Turns out you pay 10 percent tax to dine in vs 8 percent to take out, which we didn’t realize because the sign was in Japanese in the back of the seating area.) In addition to food, konbini stores like 7-Eleven also have fax machines, ATMs, and the ability to replenish your Suica card, which is something we did a lot.
Tumblr media
After our 7-Eleven experience we explored the manic overwhelm that is the 24-hour mega-mart Don Quixote, grabbed some pastries at BOU’LANGE, and walked around Koishikawa Korakuen garden to take pictures.
Tumblr media
We rode the train north to the Sunshine City Mall where we hit the Pokémon Center and Gashapon Ikebukuro, the world’s largest capsule toy store.
We noticed a bunch of teenagers crowding around the mall’s central atrium and found out it was because a K-pop band called CIX was about to perform. We were going to stick around to see how it went until we found out there was an aquarium on the roof (?!?) and went there instead. We saw rare Baikal seals, which are the only mammals that live in Russia’s Lake Baikal, the deepest body of water in the world, along with river otters, penguins, pelicans, sharks, and a bunch of other fish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That night we had a reservation at MiPig Cafe Harajuku where we got to hang out with baby pigs for about 40 minutes. (We booked an hour, but their system is such that you spend about half an hour sitting on the floor, then the rest of the time getting up to leave and checking out.)
One little pig fell asleep on me before another one came over to bully him off my lap. The staff explained many of the pigs are siblings, and there are lots of rivalries. Sure enough, we saw the same pigs start fights multiple times while we were there. It was adorable but also left me wondering what happens to the pigs after they grow up…? Maybe I shouldn’t think about that.
Day 3: Yokohama
Tumblr media
We took the world’s longest train ride (only slightly exaggerating) to Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, which is kind of like a distributed theme park on an island about an hour and a half outside the city.
Tumblr media
We saw a SeaWorld-style show with beluga whales and dolphins and wandered labyrinthine hallways of aquariums. I rode a dinky little roller coaster called Surf Leviathan while Robert went to the Umi Farm, where he caught a sea bream they then cooked and served him.
A dolphin at the up-close-and-personal FUREAI Lagoon chucked a basketball to me—I was so surprised—and after I threw it back, he chose Robert next and then continued down the line of people standing along the wall.
We had yakiniku at Satsuki in Bunkyo City that night, up three flights of tiny stairs in a cramped building that was very cozy.
Day 4: Shibuya + Ginza
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We headed over to Shibuya and popped out of the subway right into a festival at Shibuya Crossing, then traversed the famous crossing for ourselves.
Tumblr media
We made our way to Flipper’s for soufflé pancakes (well worth the hourlong wait) before nearly sweating to death walking through Yoyogi Park to Meiji Jingu, a shrine where we accidentally crashed not one but two weddings. At this point it was so hot I didn’t think I could make it to the next train station. The humidity was demoralizing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We hit up Ginza next and walked around what felt like a never-ending indoor mall, then got custom-printed drinks at Nissan Crossing. I got the chocolate latte and Robert ordered the lemonade and both were delicious.
The flagship Muji store had been on our list for a while and we were excited to check out all seven floors (plus hotel and food?!?) but it turned out three floors were closed for renovation, so we didn’t get to witness all of the store’s glory. Probably for the best because we ended up bringing home an extra suitcase of souvenirs anyway. Instead we got in line at Tsuru TonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie for dinner, which took over an hour. The udon was decent but I probably wouldn’t return.
Day 5: Tokyo DisneySea
Tumblr media
We went to Tokyo DisneySea, which we thought would be less crowded on a Monday than a weekend, but it was so busy I can’t imagine how bad it would have been on a weekend. It was also so hot there were announcements about taking breaks and drinking water, which I’ve never heard at a theme park before, even having grown up in Florida. At one point I couldn’t even muster up the energy to move across a sunny walkway—I had to stop and sit for a few minutes before my body would let me go on.
Many hours were spent in line for Indiana Jones, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and 20,000 Leagues of the Sea, and our feet paid the price. I’m not a huge fan of Disney rides—I appreciate the theming, but the thrill level isn’t there for me—so I don’t think they were worth waits of that length, but I’m still glad I rode them since these rides are Tokyo-specific. I heard someone compare Tokyo DisneySea to Universal and it did feel more like that than a typical Disney park. The seaside theming and landscaping is really on point.
Day 6: Akihabara + Ueno
Tumblr media
On Tuesday we explored Akihabara and Ueno, where I’m pretty sure I got heat exhaustion because I was tired and confused and barely able to finish sentences. After taking a break I was ready to give it another shot. Ueno is stuffed with signs, shops, souvenirs, and shrines, and was probably the biggest sensory overload of the trip for me.
Tumblr media
We stopped at Pastel Caffe for honey toast and a caramelized banana parfait that revitalized me for our self-guided tour of Ueno Park and the Shinobazunoike Benten-do temple, where a lady randomly approached us and proceeded to, uh, bless us?
Tumblr media
After being…blessed?…we went to Monster Hunter Cafe, which Robert had been wanting to check out after a renewed interest in their mobile game. The city’s many vending machines already had me hooked on strawberry milk but Monster Hunter’s version took it to another level (or maybe it was the heat exhaustion 😅).
Ueno boasts a great many souvenir stalls and brightly lit claw game shops, where Robert won an Oshi No Ko stuffed character. He also ran into a guy from the States who asked for a picture together since they were both wearing LA Rams gear.
Day 7: Ginza + Bunkyo City + TeamLab Planets
Tumblr media
On our last full day, we got reservations at the six-seat Michelin-starred ramen shop Chukasoba Ginza Hachigou (h/t Koes!). You line up at nine a.m. to get tickets for a timed entry, then return at the time they assign you. While we waited for our slot we ventured over to Roar Coffeehouse; Ginza’s Pokemon Center; a shopping mall; and Ginza Petit Custa. When we returned to Chukasoba, we were served the chef-recommended "ravioli" ramen we'd ordered earlier. I'm no food expert but the ramen was pretty dang good.
With souvenirs piling up (cough Pokemon Center cough) we needed a suitcase to take back home, so we went by Ginza Karen (which, to my disappointment, was not staffed entirely by Karens), apparently a well-known luggage store. We settled on a Japanese-made bright yellow roller bag.
Tumblr media
That night I wanted to ride the Thunder Dolphin coaster that was basically across the street from our hotel, but, true to its name, it was closed due to thunderstorms so instead we went up to the neighboring Bunkyo Civic Center observatory (for free!) to take in nearly-360-degree views of the city.
Tumblr media
We shopped for some more souvenirs and Japan-specific skincare products at good ol’ Don Quixote before grabbing the abalone course at Grow in Bunkyo City, which was delicious. I wish we’d had time to finish the entire course but, alas, we had to miss the garlic rice and dessert because otherwise we’d have been late for our TeamLab Planets reservation.
Tumblr media
Speaking of TeamLab Planets, I wasn’t sure what to expect because reviews were mixed, but it was a fun experience. It bills itself as an interactive art museum, and most of the exhibits offer completely unique experiences that will never be recreated. In the koi room you wade through knee-deep water while virtual fish swim around you in real-time projections that are based on your movement and the amount of people in the room. Our favorite was the flowers in space projection, another unique exhibit where it feels like you’re floating through a universe of flowers and butterflies.
Our last stop was Lawson’s for plane snacks and a final serving of strawberry milk, because I’m addicted and convenience stores back home are trash compared to Japan’s.
Day 8: back to the States
Our flight home from Haneda was delayed because…drumroll, please…the captain forgot his ID in his hotel room back in Tokyo. Our completely full plane waited on the tarmac for over an hour as some hapless soul fought traffic to retrieve the captain’s passport before we were allowed to leave. I guess on the bright side, the timing meant we got to see a Pokémon-themed plane as we taxied off, so there’s that.
Tokyo was a feast for the senses and I can’t wait to go back and explore more of Japan (although first I need to learn more than two Japanese words). I already miss the convenience stores, vending machines, trains, and bathrooms—seriously, they’re next level.
Random observations
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Generally, walk on the left side of the sidewalk/escalator/etc
DOWNLOAD GOOGLE TRANSLATE! I mean, unless you are fluent in Japanese…
Don’t go in the summer unless you want to get heat stroke
Despite the heat, people mostly wear pants, dresses, and skirts, and everyone dresses much more formally than they do in the States (particularly in Seattle)
Almost no one wears sunglasses—I saw maybe three other people wearing them the whole time, and one of them was a tourist
There’s no tipping in Japan, but there is a two percent tax difference between dining in and taking away
You can apparently only pay cash to reload your Suica card…? Or at least, that was our only option
No one locks up their bikes—it was a shock to see dozens of bikes just sitting around freely, because bike theft apparently isn’t a thing there
There are actual telephone booths around the city

Initially I was thinking my lost drive to make art was from working through this dreary and toxic virtual workplace and needing every hour outside of it to dissociate until or through dinner until bedtime. This morning I had the passing thought, "At this time a year ago, I was living on savings." I quit the second of my part time jobs and was living off savings from the aquarium and the restaurant.
Something about going through phases of making art and completely stopping makes me wonder if this really what I want to do. It's a gaslighting thing, but at its very core art was a tool for escapism and coping with the lonely childhood and first years of adulthood. And, learning from my current job, at some point I begin to reject the sense of obligation and stop or put in half the effort.
And so I'm not in the same heightened state of needing to escape things, and I'm unsure where my desire to make art is. I don't like just making pretty flowers, but I do because how it makes people feel. I know there's some untapped emotions to dig at that I've completely kept away and out of my art; maybe that's something to explore.

i was so surprised people were finding my humble blog until i did some looking around, and it seems like some big time twitch gamer has been playing Fin Fin of all things. what is in the air right now? fin fin zeitgeist? i wonder...
fortunately, fin fin is now preserved on the internet archive and playable with a Virtual Machine if it's not compatible with your system. but wow, this sudden revival makes me want to build an actual archival site for all my stuff instead of only a tumblr blog, where neither permanence nor provenance is guaranteed. and i sure do love to make a website ^_^
my personal Fin Fin story is: in 3rd grade my friend Lindsay showed me a black and white photocopy of a very short newspaper article while we were sitting in a huge pine tree at recess. i know exactly where we were and what time of year it was, because although the image wasn't in colour and mostly illegible, i was quickly obsessed with it. i made a copy of that copy and brought it home.
honestly it feels like i didn't go to elementary school at all and everything i learned, i learned at my friend Fin Fin's house lol
i loved being in the water. i loved anything in the water. i drew those things all kids (?) seem to draw-- like piles and piles of elaborate cross-sections of the ocean to show all the plants and animals living in it. this translated to toys and eventually games as well. this Littlest Petshop seahorse was completely mesmerising to me... it's not like you could do much with it, but it seemed magical. each side of the tank is meant to have hot or cold water, changing the seahorse's colour. (you pick it up with the magnet wand)
Tumblr media
and were any of you also on fire for any type of rotating/autonomous aquarium toy? they still make those now, but it was something that seemed to populate a fair number of bedrooms or kitchen counters.
Tumblr media
so Fin Fin slotted in nicely.
i already had some training on the computer— i was really bad at typing so my mom dragged an old desktop (with the built-in monitor!) and seemingly had me type directly into the terminal lol. i was also really bad at math, and was instructed to play the 1994 Math Blaster with the hope that it being a computer game (precious to me) would like, click my brain into place or something.
Tumblr media
it seems weird to say “my parents used computers for work” but it was sort of notable in that we also had a computer at home for my sibling and i to play on— my parents used that one for socializing and by that i mean playing 7th Guest and Myst— the latter of which i loved to sneakily watch and would later play, too. i had a huuuuge poster of the Sunners from Riven's Jungle Island because i was obsessed… i'm sure you can see why. i love any Caribbean place and any aquatic guy.
Tumblr media
i first played the demo version of Fin Fin. it let us preview other Fujitsu properties, like Virtual Safari, a colonial project developed by Anglia Multimedia (a subsidiary of Anglia TV, now ITV Anglia) which no longer exists. it was all about taking photos of the wildlife with the footage coming from Anglia's Survival series, but it was pretty unsettling.... and it felt literally dark, too, colours and lighting-wise, but maybe that was more the mood than the visuals. i can't find someone else playing it at a decent quality, so maybe that means i have to do it again........
Tumblr media
somewhere in this time i also played Creatures (1996), but my most prominent memories are of Creatures II (1998.) just like fin fin, these games have a lasting and self-sustaining fandom. i've utilised fan-made (and in some cases, fan-turned-staff-turned-fan) injections and gene/egg modifications over the years whenever i boot it up again... the series is on GOG if you want to play it too!
Tumblr media
anything that looks like this? absolutely marvellous to me. i can FEEL my brain turning on.
Tumblr media
Creatures is more about the evolution/your hand in their evolution and arriving at a certain level of "advancement" plus what you find along the way. plus, the norns are infuriating. i love them, but my god they are truly helpless lol so be prepared! meanwhile, fin fin is more about emotional development, especially that of the kid playing it. it's an emotional experience, rather than the player taking on a teaching role.
there's a lot of articles-- maybe even including the one i first read-- that are written through an excruciatingly contemptuous adult tone, as though fin fin was ever designed with adults explicitly in mind. which isn't to say that adults were never invited to enjoy it-- they were, and they do! i certainly do, lol! (i also cannot begin to imagine how i'd feel about it if it hadn't been so formative.) fin fin isn't trying to mirror real life exactly. fin fin lives inside a computer-- so what would that look like? what would that act like? it is, genuinely, like trying to envision an alien planet.
what is it about these virtual pets that even the pixels of a Tamagotchi were/are so deeply empathised with? i think it's that they weren't trying to create the real world, but a world that would exist in a computer, something sumptuous, a visual delight, essentially boundless but with a unique and memorable feel to it. it's in stark contrast to the cloying and frantic literalism of games since the 2000s. i mean we all feel it now-- "I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people paid more to work less and I'm not kidding."
these early graphics stick out so much in our minds as something WE had a hand in creating, in our minds. but projection wasn't the only mechanism creating this experience, it was also the necessary reflection as mistakes are made and corrected, and the world is explored, and cause and effect are witnessed. fin fin was a first step and first contact with something that recognised our presence. there was more room for our imagination to fill in any blanks or create connections between ourselves/experiences and the virtual world.
i touched on this/other childhood games some in my Klonoa post.
yes, the Myst series' pre-rended backgrounds are gorgeous to me, while dated now-- and even these aren't hyper-literal. you look at them now and of course our imaginations were filling in where the answers fell away into the expanse, and even moreso as we move away from their point in game history. they certainly weren't made with the same intent as something like a virtual pet. they're a story, not a little guy. a virtual world, or a simulated life, while limitless, is small and precious, too. nurturing isn't the same as teaching, having any kind of authority inside the space, the space which seemingly continues after you leave it-- it's a sense of mutual care.
The project's executive producer is the Japanese film director Makoto Tezuka and his aim, he says, was to create a character and environment that would "survive for 1,000 years". - via the times, 1997

i played through the Fin Fin storybook (To Teo and Back with Jack) with my sibling, with friends, with cousins... but i found it lacked a lot of the charm, in part because i didn't find myself needing an in-game analogue. maybe it would've worked better for kids even younger than me?
there was a little card that game with the game that you could fill out to "receive promotional updates and prizes" which i did do, but for the life of me i don't remember what if anything i might've received. and i was very lucky to have two of the now-rare deluxe version Fin Fin plushies... i only have two because my dog chewed the eyes off of one of them and i was aghast. so that's what i mean by lucky, because this happened right as the window was closing on Fin Fin. these things just can't be found anymore. i've really gotta rescue them from my parents' house.
it's really sweet that fin fin is given new life ever so often. i hope everyone enjoys their new friend 💙

SO. i noticed u have a marine life blog... i even was going to follow it a while ago until i saw it was rarely updated! but, well, this is to say, it seems we share this as a common interest! though, i ALSO imagine you probably know a Fair Bit More Than Me... i am wondering if you have anything you are Particularly eager to talk about or share! a cool Animal, or a strange Behavior, or...! something! and do not be afraid of having it be Long, if that is something that was on your mind! i love this stuff!! also you are a Treasured Mutual and i enjoy hearing you talk anyway!
YEAH I don’t exactly follow a lot of blogs that provide the content for the upkeep of that blog? I mostly just go on hunts for content every so often then reblog just about every gif/video I can find. It’s mostly just a virtual aquarium for me personally because I like fish!
As for neat marine life facts- sea sponges are actually some of the simplest animals we have. They lack proper organs and mostly get their nutrients through osmosis/cell diffusion. They’re basically like a living mouth, tube, then rectum. There’s a kind of fish that actually uses sea sponges as a hiding place/home. I can’t remember the species, but I can look it up if you’re curious.
Another neat thing about fish is that they actually rely on noises quite a bit! This makes boats actually incredibly disruptive to marine life.
I have another anecdote/fact in mind, but my meds are kicking and it’s a little long lmao

Hi Banshee! I hope you've been having a great week so far! For the ask game, 4, 7, and 8? :D
moon moon! it's been a while :( hope you're doing well 💚
4. mythical creature you think/believe is real?
hmmm i'm not sure i've ever really believed in the existence of a mythical creature. i've always wished that they were real. if we're going to be "reasonable" here tho, if there's any creature that's going to be real it's probably something along the lines of big foot. just a huge guy hanging out in a place where virtually no one can find it, so you know. maybe there's a whole family of them who knows.
7. what animal do you look forward to seeing when you visit an aquarium?
it's not something i do very often but you know those tunnel-like areas, with a domed ceiling where everything is basically a glass barrier between you and the ocean life and has things like stingrays and stuff? that shit freaks me out but it's so fascinating. i am a little scared of sea creatures, ngl, but that's cool to me in a morbid way. i'd much rather go to a seafood restaurant tho.
8. do you change into specific clothes for the house when you get home?
hmm so pre-covid, it would depend on my mood, or what i was wearing. with bodycon and tighter clothes (or my school uniform back in the day), yeah, i'd typically change into pyjamas. if it was a more casual outfit, then nah.
but anytime i did an internship i'd have to wear formal clothes obviously, and i'd typically change out of those as soon as i was home. now tho. i work full time and my job is completely virtual so it's kinda the opposite. i've been forcing myself to get dressed and look semi-presentable for absolutely no one, just because it helps me feel like a somewhat real person, and i need that sometimes.
Thanks for the ask mooney, have a great day! :D
Send me a weirdly specific ask

WRITING AND RESEARCH
Good evening, Everyone,
My name is Essence Burroughs. I am 23 years old. I love taking online courses. I am currently pursuing my bachelor's degree in early childcare. I am even more excited to give this art class a try. I used to love painting, especially when it was time to gather as a family and go painting with a twist. A fun fact you should know about me is that I am short but love to walk in heels to make me look taller.
Five facts about Damien Hirst
Damien Hirst was born in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. He then moved to London in 1986 to study at Goldsmith’s College.
Hirst became famous for a group of artworks, such as, a shark, sheep, and a cow, that were chopped up animals in formaldehyde and rotting meat.
The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Somone Living, artwork of the tiger shark which is considered iconic work of British art from the 1990s and has become a symbol of Britart worldwide.
The tiger shark was caught off Hervey Bay in Queensland, Australia, by a fisher who was asked to do so.
Hirst won Tate Britain’s Turner Prize, an award for contemporary art in 1995.
Hirst is supposed to be the richest living artist to date.
Tumblr media
The way I think about art has changed since the first time I looked at this image. I notice that art does have a way of bringing things to life. My first thought about the image was scary because I know sharks can be dangerous. It also started making me feel like I was in the ocean with a live shark in deep water. Then I felt like I was at an aquarium where SeaLife is on display so that humans can learn how sharks communicate, what they eat, how they are trained, etc. The image made me feel so curious about how they created the illusion. Yes, I do see things differently in art after looking at this image. Most of all I see that art can be interpreted in many ways, and that everyone's interpretation is valid.
2. ART AND WRITING
Tumblr media
The Last Supper is graphic artwork by the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. The painting was made between the late 1490s for the Dominican monastery Santa Maria Delle Grazie in Milan. The painting stands for the last “dinner” between Jesus and his disciples. Leonardo used tempera paint and mixed media directly to the stone wall. The use the painting serve is to let us remember the life and work of Jesus did for us, as he blessed bread and broke it, and the physical blood shed by him. The Last Supper painting is important to me because he sacrificed his last meal while getting ready to prepare a better place for us. Yes, the picture is stunning because it looks realistic as if I can touch the lord. I love that every day I see the picture hanging on my wall, I feel the lord's presence near me.
3. WRITING A SELF-POTRAIT
The “baggage” I will bring along when I look at art is positivity to the work of artists by keeping an open mind and appreciating their creativity and message it means behind it. The 23-year-old me has learned how to stay positive and supportive whether I created something or even if it someone else works. I am an African American female who is from Arcadia FL. If you know me well, you will know I love to try new foods and travel to different states and countries. I am so excited to travel to Jamaica Montego Bay area for my 24th birthday in August. I am currently not in an organized group, but when I was younger, around about 16 years old, I used to be in a group called the precious pearls youth. In the Precious Pearls group, we travel to Washington D.C, Tennessee, Orlando, etc. We were taught how to meet new people and still have self-respect to others, family, and friends. I was working at a childcare center for 2 years, which I loved dearly. I decided to give home health aide a try for a couple of years. What makes you uniquely you? When I get this question asked to me the first thing, I think about is my patience. My patience speaks a lot of value, especially when I was in childcare and had to learn it each day on how to tolerate a person being upset or mad. It worked out for the better more when I decided to give working round elderly people a try.
