The name of my painting is called “featured friend”. It is a painting of a bird holding on to a tree branch as the wind travel by as fast as possible. I made a painting of a bird because birds are a great way to showcase various brushstrokes, color blending, and layering techniques. As I am proud to say I finish my art semester with a fantastic grade I would like you all to meet my feathered friend, as we both held strong through the windy days and never gave up! even knowing I'm not an artist but I did the best I could. And for those of you who may not know, birds also symbolize freedom and resilience.

1. WRITING, THINKING AND LOOKING CRITICALLY
Jackson Pollock's time studying under Thomas Benton helped him develop his technical skills. Pollock started understanding the style of composition and form. Pollock showed more interest in exploring the expressive potential of abstraction, which led him to experiment with different ways of applying paint to the canvas. His drip paintings were a result of this experimentation. He was so simple and outstanding with his paintings because all he did was drip, pour, and fling paint onto the canvas to create an unpredictable composition. When he removed all imagery from his paintings, Pollock was able to focus on the materiality of the paint and the physical act of the painting itself.
2. ART PROJECT – Create an ORIGINAL abstract, non-representational artwork.

The moment I first created this painting was the moment I wanted to feel calm. I used thick and bold brushstrokes deep enough to create a sense of energy and movement. I was young when I created this painting just for fun. And actually, as I looked back at it today I see more than just a random picture. I made this piece of art for my living room to pop out of the blue and black furniture set I have. What caught my eye the most was the bright baby blue.

"The Triumph of Divine Love" by Peter Paul Ruben
Tumblr media
The Triumph of Divine Love by Peter Paul Ruben was made in Ca. 1625. Oil on canvas, 152 x 204 inches. (386.1 x 518.2 cm). It is much taller than a human, sits high like a giraffe, and is as huge as a shed. The painting has warm realistic colors, such as, nude, blue, green, and brown. If you look deeper, you will see a rich red, rich metal like silver and fancy gold. There are a bunch of human forms, animals, curvy patterns, and two pillars in the shape of squares and cylinders made of cement like material. The subject for this picture can go a long way. Humanity is the main subject of how motherhood for Virgin Mary has played a huge part, as she is a single human being with her child being protected. She is not only being protected by God on her right side of her feet who draws blood from its breast, sacrificing His own safety for its young (the bird), but also by a group of cherubs surrounded together around her body. The lions carry her with one of the cherubs hanging tight on the back of the lion on a chariot, which are ready to set her free with peace away from the wicked snakes (the devils). The painting is designed in Baroque style, characterized by drama and emotional density. It features a lot of movement and energy with several twisting and turning dramatically. I believe this painting by Ruben is balanced because the figures are arranged in a way that creates a sense of symmetry as the colors are evenly distributed. The main part of the picture emphasized is the center of the picture to draw importance to the viewers as the cherubs float together in a circular halo form. Unity and variety are often used visually in this image. The chestnut brown bird near Mary that is in defense mode is big with a long neck, large head, and wings. Mary is realistic and tall with an average-sized body. The one healthy baby size is like a 11-month-old and round and Chubby and as long as a 1-year-old. The 16 cherubs are little with a heavy like weight on them. The brown lions are massive with wide heads and muscular shoulders. The white dove, which symbolizes love, peace, and hope, has a round body and a small head with a short beak, and the two black snakes are thin and long.
Looking at the painting, God’s love never fails. It makes me feel so safe to keep going through life even though devils may try to bring me down. It is an emotional painting that evokes a powerful message that includes God’s presence. The Devils tried interfering and slithering through to try to take our peace away from Mary. In the real world, devils try it hardest to make us forget about our faith in God. The thought of when looking straight at Mary, I put myself in her shoes and what came to my headfirst was “The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to His heavenly kingdom; to him be the glory forever and ever, Amen (2 Timothy 4:18).”
The Triumph of Divine Love by Ruben is linked with the life of Renaissance and Baroque movement, which appeared in Europe in the 17th century. In 1625, Archduchess Isabel Clara Eugenia commissioned Rubens to design about 20 tapestries for the Monastery of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid. When Ruben painting became famous, it was so clear and still is clear enough to know he was open minded about Christ. Ruben was trying to promote and strengthen belief in Christianity in a church.
I picked this mind-blowing painting because the first thing that caught my eye was the two lions looking in two different directions. When I see lions in person or in images, I tend to feel strong. I adore lions so much that I am proud that my birth zodiac sign is represented as a lion. The next thing caught my eye was the protection Mary had while holding her baby tight enough as she balances standing up on the chariot until she made it out away from the wicked devils, the snakes.

Balance
A. Is the achievement of equilibrium, in which acting influences are held in check by opposing forces.
B. Balance may be achieved through either symmetry or asymmetry.
- Symmetry- a design of formal type.
- Asymmetry- lack of symmetry.
C. Symmetrical balance- occurs when equal weights are on equal sides of a composition, balanced around a fulcrum or axis in the center.
D. Asymmetrical balance- inequality between two sides of a picture, but the image still looks complete and sensible.
Tumblr media
Asymmetrical balance, “The guitar” by Johannes Vermeer (1672), gives the viewer a sense of change and movement.
Tumblr media
Symmetrical balance, “Girl before the mirror” by Pablo Picasso (1932), geometric shapes and rhythms.
Emphasis, Subordination, and Contrast
A. Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewers' attention. (Focal point)
Focal point- The principal area of emphasis in a work of art; place to which the artist directs the most attention through composition. Also, structure, and balance.
B. Subordination are the areas that are less visually interesting (background).
C. Contrast achieved when opposite elements are arranged together.
Tumblr media
“Still Life with Compotier, Pitcher, and Fruit” by Paul Cezanne (1892-1894).

3. Connecting Art to Your World
Color can have a powerful effect on human emotions and feelings. I remember a time when my grandfather was living in Arcadia Florida, just a mile away from me. Every weekend after I got home from work, I used to go over to his home to iron a week worth of his clothing. Inside his closet, there were shirts and pants of every hue. But the saturation of the green clothing was so vibrant that it felt like spring. The value his clothing was worth was expensive. Besides all the assorted colors he had, he always wore black. Not only was his outfit black, but his shoes were too. I asked him his favorite color, black. I was surprised when he told me his favorite was green, but black gave him strength. We were just alike, green caught my eye too. The day before my grandfather left this earth, he wore a two-tone green shirt. The intensity of the green shirt made him stand out so well that he would even out do a crowd. The day of his funeral I decided to wear all black. I was in more pain than ever to see him in a casket. I can say he looked so relaxed in his green button-down shirt. After the funeral service, there was an all-shiny black hearse arriving to take my grandfather to rest. The color scheme I would choose for my life would be black. Not only did black give my grandfather strength, but it also gave me energy to keep moving forward even knowing I cannot get my favorite person back.

Group 6- Black and White vs. Colored Photos.
The choice of black and white photographs removes distraction of color and helps viewers focus on other aspects of the picture. The black and white picture shows the road between the trees and the long journey that will be ahead of you. Looking at a black and white picture, it reminds me of stories told to me on how life was back in the days when there were no color photos or tv shows. The motivation of color photographs is to convey a message. The rainbow picture is a beautiful connection to nature and interest in the existence of God as it reflects his glory. Looking at colored pictures makes me feel calm.

WRITING AND RESEARCH
Good evening, Everyone,
My name is Essence Burroughs. I am 23 years old. I love taking online courses. I am currently pursuing my bachelor's degree in early childcare. I am even more excited to give this art class a try. I used to love painting, especially when it was time to gather as a family and go painting with a twist. A fun fact you should know about me is that I am short but love to walk in heels to make me look taller.
Five facts about Damien Hirst
Damien Hirst was born in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. He then moved to London in 1986 to study at Goldsmith’s College.
Hirst became famous for a group of artworks, such as, a shark, sheep, and a cow, that were chopped up animals in formaldehyde and rotting meat.
The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Somone Living, artwork of the tiger shark which is considered iconic work of British art from the 1990s and has become a symbol of Britart worldwide.
The tiger shark was caught off Hervey Bay in Queensland, Australia, by a fisher who was asked to do so.
Hirst won Tate Britain’s Turner Prize, an award for contemporary art in 1995.
Hirst is supposed to be the richest living artist to date.
Tumblr media
The way I think about art has changed since the first time I looked at this image. I notice that art does have a way of bringing things to life. My first thought about the image was scary because I know sharks can be dangerous. It also started making me feel like I was in the ocean with a live shark in deep water. Then I felt like I was at an aquarium where SeaLife is on display so that humans can learn how sharks communicate, what they eat, how they are trained, etc. The image made me feel so curious about how they created the illusion. Yes, I do see things differently in art after looking at this image. Most of all I see that art can be interpreted in many ways, and that everyone's interpretation is valid.
2. ART AND WRITING
Tumblr media
The Last Supper is graphic artwork by the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. The painting was made between the late 1490s for the Dominican monastery Santa Maria Delle Grazie in Milan. The painting stands for the last “dinner” between Jesus and his disciples. Leonardo used tempera paint and mixed media directly to the stone wall. The use the painting serve is to let us remember the life and work of Jesus did for us, as he blessed bread and broke it, and the physical blood shed by him. The Last Supper painting is important to me because he sacrificed his last meal while getting ready to prepare a better place for us. Yes, the picture is stunning because it looks realistic as if I can touch the lord. I love that every day I see the picture hanging on my wall, I feel the lord's presence near me.
3. WRITING A SELF-POTRAIT
The “baggage” I will bring along when I look at art is positivity to the work of artists by keeping an open mind and appreciating their creativity and message it means behind it. The 23-year-old me has learned how to stay positive and supportive whether I created something or even if it someone else works. I am an African American female who is from Arcadia FL. If you know me well, you will know I love to try new foods and travel to different states and countries. I am so excited to travel to Jamaica Montego Bay area for my 24th birthday in August. I am currently not in an organized group, but when I was younger, around about 16 years old, I used to be in a group called the precious pearls youth. In the Precious Pearls group, we travel to Washington D.C, Tennessee, Orlando, etc. We were taught how to meet new people and still have self-respect to others, family, and friends. I was working at a childcare center for 2 years, which I loved dearly. I decided to give home health aide a try for a couple of years. What makes you uniquely you? When I get this question asked to me the first thing, I think about is my patience. My patience speaks a lot of value, especially when I was in childcare and had to learn it each day on how to tolerate a person being upset or mad. It worked out for the better more when I decided to give working round elderly people a try.
