Exclusive Interview: Luke Gilford & Charlie Plummer on dreamy queer rodeo movie National Anthem
Growing up in Evergreen, Colorado, some of filmmaker and photographer Luke Gilford’s most vivid childhood memories are of being at the rodeo with his father, who was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Leaving the rural Southwest for New York City and Los Angeles, Gilford only returned to the rodeo arenas of his youth in 2016 when he discovered the International Gay Rodeo…

mod a’s lgbt musicals
Hi there! I’m a big theatre kid so I thought for pride month I’d put together a list of LGBTQ musicals. Despite its association with queer people, musical theatre is not known for its amazing representation. I’ve put together a list here of musicals I know of with queer characters. I’ve tried to avoid those where the queer characters are incredibly minor roles or those where the representation is just not good enough to be salvageable (*side eyes Legally Blonde*) I know there are many musicals I will have missed out but these are the ones I am most aware of. Feel free to add more! So without further ado, here it is.
Fun Home
The big Tony winner of 2015! Based on Alison Bechdel, a butch lesbian cartoonist. At the age of 43, she looks for new material by trying to explore her past and her relationship with her closeted gay dad. Looks back at a version of herself when she was 10 and a “tomboy” and at 19 when she came out and got her first girlfriend. Has very cute lighthearted moments as well as very sad moments. Has a beautiful song where small Alison sees a butch deliverywoman. Problems in that since the original broadway cast, Alison’s costume has got less butch. Content warning for suicide.
Here’s their Tony performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMAuesRJm1E
The Color Purple
Based on Alice Walker’s novel about black women in the 1930s. Follows Celie who has been abused by men her whole life who discovers she is a lesbian but also makes a journey of self discovery and learns to love herself. Her love interest is a bisexual woman. Won best revival at the Tonys in 2016. Content warning for discussion/implied sexual abuse.
Here’s their Tony performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k2xzQyT2bk
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
A teenage gay boy in Sheffield wants to be a drag queen and go to prom in a dress. Also a nice touch that is does not focus on him having a relationship (since he is sixteen) and him having to come out as he is already out. Focuses on his close relationship with his supportive mother. Has a diverse cast. Jamie is currently played by a black actor and his best friend wears a hijab and has a very diverse ensemble as well. Unfortunately has a part where Jamie responds to a homophobic bully by calling him a bunch of ableist and classist slurs.
Here’s a clip of the most popular song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7C3FuFWDdw
The Prom
Emma is a lesbian teenager in Indiana whose prom is cancelled by the PTA after she requests to bring her girlfriend to it. A group of Broadway actors come down to help her campaign to be allowed to attend prom, as well as styling her, helping her work on her confidence and educating the town’s people. What ensues is basically a two hour musical episode of Queer Eye. Cheesy and fun with so many musical theatre references crammed in. My one issue is that the show is rather harsh on people who are closeted since Emma has conflicted with her girlfriend Alyssa because she is not ready to come out.
Here’s a clip of their Tony performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGcG_r5xv3E
Rent
Probably the most well known on this list. Artists in New York during the AIDS crisis. Two of the main couples featured are queer: Maureen is bisexual and in a relationship with Joanne who is a lesbian, and Angel is a transgender woman of color in a relationship with Collins, a presumably bisexual man. However, she tends to be played bi cis men and there are instances of her being misgendered by the main characters uncritically. In Rent Live (2019), all instances of her being misgendered were removed and her gender identity was confirmed. She was played in this by Valentina, an nb drag queen and has also been played by Pose’s MJ Rodriguez, a trans woman. Very diverse with Jewish characters and people of colour and in the live show, only 1 of the 8 main characters was white. Has been criticised over the years, mainly for its biphobic portrayal of Maureen who is promiscuous and implied to cheat, but in the 90s did a lot for the LGBTQ community and is more progressive than a lot of media even now.
Here’s a clip of Maureen and Joanne from Rent Live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06oCfKYYPTY
And here’s some Angel and Collins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hl-M94o_x8
Falsettos
Marvin comes out as gay in the late 70s but decides to move his ex wife and son in with his boyfriend. Addresses AIDS crisis in Act 2. Has “lesbians from next door” in act 2. F Revived on Broadway in 2016. All of the characters are Jewish. Unfortunately, in revival casts, very few actors tend to be Jewish.
Here’s the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjnAHOdMQVk
Come From Away
In the aftermath of 9/11, 38 planes are diverted to a small town in Canada called Gander. Shows people of different races and nationalities bonding in a scary time. Addresses Islamophobia. Has one song called Prayer where prayers from different religions overlap. Has an interracial gay couple called Kevin and Kevin. They break up in the end but are very important characters. Won best direction of a musical in 2017. The Broadway production starred Jenn Colella who has referred to herself as ‘mostly gay’.
Here’s a clip of Jenn Colella singing a song from the musical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8ukgH6U-d0
Head Over Heels
Honestly I don’t quite know what this musical is about, even by reading the plot summary and listening to the soundtrack. I know it’s set in a Tudor fantasy world and that there are wlw couples as well as an explicitly non binary character, played by Peppermint, a trans woman, and that there are interracial couples and plus sized actors. It is a jukebox musical using songs by the Go-Gos and yes the wlw anthem that is Heaven is a Place on Earth is one of them. The soundtrack is fantastic even if you can’t follow what is going on.
Here are some show clips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx2qQ7QAPm0
Spring Awakening
German school kids in the 19th century discovering their sexuality. Two of the schoolboy supporting characters, Ernst and Hänschen, have a romance when they have a reprise of an earlier song in Act 2.  A BIG content warning as it has graphic discussions of rape and songs about it and a sex scene with very dubious consent. However there was a very wonderful 2016 revival using deaf actors and sign language.
This is another one you can very easily find the full show of on YouTube which I won’t link. However here’s the Tony performance for the revival: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSagsMcak4Q
If/Then
A woman named Elizabeth (originally played by Idina Menzel) moves to New York after a divorce and contemplated how different her life would be if she took two different paths. Four supporting queer characters. Her ex-boyfriend is bisexual and played by Anthony Rapp (who is bisexual in real life) and he gets a boyfriend in one timeline. Another of her friends is a lesbian called Kate who marries her girlfriend in the musical. Problems occur as in both timelines, cheating goes on in the lesbian relationship although they stay together in one. Elizabeth also says she doesn’t believe in bisexuals, a view no one ever challenges her on, however Lucas is very clearly bisexual which is some proof for the audience that she is wrong.
I’m not going to link it here but there are many very high quality bootlegs on it on YouTube if you want to watch,
Ghost Quartet
A bit of a weird one. This is more of a concept album. There are four performers who each play instruments and they tell the stories of many interconnected timelines. It is very hard to explain but there are souls travelling through time who keep being reincarnated as different people with different relationships to each other which usually end with one woman killing the other. In the song Soldier & Rose, the ghosts Rose and Pearl are lovers as Rose seduces the soldier for her honey.  In the song Four Friends, for one chorus the men sing “I like to put my hand on a pretty girls’s knee” and the women sing “pretty boy’s knee” and then they switch for the next chorus so they’re all bisexual. In general, a lot of fun if you like weird musicals and I mean really weird.
The full show is online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJSaEJm8pCE
Mean Girls
Yes there’s a musical of it. I was not looking forward to it when it was announced but have actually grown to quite like it. It’s hardly lyrical genius but the songs are fun and a lot of the problematic aspects of the film have been fixed. Damian is more explicitly gay in the musical and sings about an ex boyfriend in one song. Janis is heavily implied to be a lesbian (confirmed by actress offstage) and she doesn’t end up with Kevin Gnapoor. She is played by a queer actress in the tour cast. Both queer characters are much bigger roles than in the movie and get several songs each. I’d consider the musical to be quite white feminist but it does address issues such as the sexualisation of teenage girls and the notion that to be ‘sexy’ is ‘empowering’.
Here’s a clip of one of Damian’s songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-zM6QKkxEQ
& Juliet
An English jukebox musical about what might have happened to Juliet in Romeo and Juliet if she had not died at the end. I haven’t seen it but I’ve listened to the soundtrack and it is mainly comprised of 21st century songs by women. One of Juliet’s best friends is non binary although is played by a cis man as far as we know. Also I went to the same school as one of the actors which is a bonus for me. Very diverse cast.
Here’s a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dm2k9nS3o20
In Transit
A capella musical about several people’s adventures on New York public transport. Two of the main characters in this ensemble cast are an interracial gay couple where both are pocs. They are engaged but one of them is having trouble coming out to his mother. I found it refreshing in that his fiance for the most part was not upset with him at his struggles in coming out and they were both able to live fulfilling lives despite this. I am always astonished by the talent of a cappella singers.
Here’s a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhvik6qoass  Another one where the bootleg can be found very easily on YouTube
Firebringer
Remember A Very Potter Musical? Well, the company that did that are still putting out new pieces of theatre on their YouTube channel. In 2016, they put out their ridiculous comedy musical Firebringer, about a group of bisexual cavewomen. I won’t spoil the ending but trust me, it’s great. You may know it from the viral clip of one of the main characters singing ‘I don’t really wanna do the work today.’
You can watch the full musical here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmVuNlu0LCk
Special Mentions
Company
Musical by Stephen Sondheim about a man unable to commit to a relationship, surrounded by his friends who are all in couples. However, the award-winning 2018 West End revival chose to change the genders of some of the characters. The main character Robert became ‘Bobbie’ (although all of her love interests were gender-swapped as well). One of the originally M/F couples became an M/M couple. It opened on Broadway for about a week before the Covid outbreak so that will be one to look out for.
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtDK03y4gT0
In the Heights
A musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda about the Latin American community living in Washington Heights in New York. The original theatre production has no explicitly queer characters. However, in the upcoming movie version (that was meant to be released this summer but has been pushed back to next summer) it has been confirmed that the characters of Daniela and Carla (Daphne Rubin-Vega and Stephanie Beatriz) will be explicitly a couple.
I absolutely love this musical and the trailer for the movie looks beautiful check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0CL-ZSuCrQ

Header Breakdown
Tumblr media
I’ve made a few posts explaining why I add new images to my header but I never explained the original images. So I thought I’d do that here. But since I’m nice I’m going to put it under a read more button. ;)
Tumblr media
Loki, specifically from Marvel Comics “Loki: Agent of Asgard” which explicitly features a genderfluid Loki.
Tumblr media
Anna Faris’ character from The House Bunny, which was the first chick flick I watched that made me feel truly feminine.
Tumblr media
Ruby Rose, a genderfluid actress who uses she/her pronouns.
Tumblr media
Pidge from “Voltron: Legendary Defender”, who while not explicitly stated as being nonbinary or genderfluid definitely gives off that vibe (at least to me).
Tumblr media
Katy Perry. “Girly” pop music has always helped me feel feminine and Katy Perry is one of my favorite artists.
Tumblr media
Asia Kate Dillon, a nonbinary actor with they/them pronouns.
Tumblr media
Mulan, who I latch on to due to her tendency to present as a gender different from the one she was assigned at birth.
Tumblr media
Demi Lovato. One of the female pop artists who helps me feel connected with my femininity.
Tumblr media
Bex Taylor-Klaus, the actor who played Pidge in “Voltron” BUT they are also nonbinary so yay!
Tumblr media
Amber Benson as Tara Maclay from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. WAY before I knew I was LGBTQ I strongly related to this character and still do, which makes sense in hindsight but at the time I just knew I was drawn to her.
Tumblr media
Hailee Steinfeld is one of the music artists who makes me feel in touch with my gender. ESPECIALLY her song “Most Girls”. That’s like my feminine anthem.
Tumblr media
Laverne Cox, a trans actress and activist.
Tumblr media
Taylor Swift, who is probably the queen of making music that makes me feel feminine. Also, she’s just one of my favorite artists of all time, period. I used to have a different image of her but then “You Need to Calm Down” was released and that’s hella queer so I used this image from that video.
Tumblr media
Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor, the first Doctor who’s a woman and thus cementing the character’s status as genderfluid.
Tumblr media
Hayley Kiyoko, aka Lesbian Jesus™. Need I say more?
Tumblr media
Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa Diaz, a bi actress playing a bi character on TV which is representation I LIVE for.
Tumblr media
Nicole Maines as Nial Nal from “Supergirl”, TV’s first trans superhero.
Tumblr media
Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Marvel’s first solo film superhero movie lead. Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel’s alterego) represents a lot of what I aspire to be as a woman with her strength and confidence.
Tumblr media
Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods (Legally Blonde). Like The House Bunny, I just like that this movie makes me feel femme.
Tumblr media
Jonathan Van Ness, a he/him nonbinary & genderqueer figure who appears on Netflix’s “Queer Eye”
Tumblr media
Keanu Reeves as Neo from The Matrix, directed by the Wachowski Sisters & a film that makes me feel very nonbinary.
Tumblr media
Kaitlyn Alexander as LaFontaine in “Carmilla”, a nonbinary actor playing a they/them nonbinary character.
Tumblr media
Sam Smith, a nonbinary musician with they/them pronouns.
Tumblr media
Liv Hewson, a nonbinary actor.
Tumblr media
Double Trouble, a nonbinary (possibly genderfluid) character from “She-Ra & The Princesses of Power”.
Tumblr media
Lachlan Watson, a nonbinary actor.
Tumblr media
Jacob Tobia, a nonbinary actor, author & activist.
Tumblr media
Violet Harper, a nonbinary (possibly genderqueer) character from “Young Justice”.
Tumblr media
Charlie, a nonbinary & pansexual character from “Legends of Tomorrow”.
Tumblr media
Harley Quinn from Birds of Prey where she’s a liberated, bisexual badass.
Tumblr media
Mr. Susan Link from Missing Link, who I always thought was trans coded or at least queer coded.
Tumblr media
Bridget Marquardt from “The Girls Next Door”. That show is my guilty pleasure, it makes me feel so feminine and girlish. Bridget has always been the girl I relate to the most on the show too.
Tumblr media
Amanda Seyfried as Karen Smith from Mean Girls. Mean Girls was a movie that made me feel feminine LONG before I watched it & a few personality quizzes I took said out of the Plastics I was most like Karen, so here we are.
Tumblr media
Ruby Rose as Kate Kane/Batwoman, a Jewish Lesbian superhero absolutely kicking ass.
Tumblr media
Moana from Moana. “How Far I’ll Go”, a song from the film about appreciating what you have but longing for more, always resonated with me before I even knew I was genderfluid.
Tumblr media
Simon from Love, Simon, a film that allowed me to fully embrace my gender identity.
Tumblr media
Trace Lysette, a trans activist and actress.
Tumblr media
Ashley Graham, a plus-sized model who make me feel better about being bigger.
Tumblr media
The Angels from Charlie’s Angels (2019). That’s a film that makes me feel feminine in a deeper way than other films do, with its themes of sisterhood and the fact that its made by women.
Tumblr media
Little Mix, another musical group that makes me feel in touch with my gender as a woman.
Tumblr media
Ben Schnetzer and Joe Gilgun from the 2014 film about Pride, which is about U.K. gay activists who work to help miners during their lengthy strike of the National Union of Mineworkers in the summer of 1984.

How BTS Are Breaking K-Pop's Biggest Taboos
The chart-topping Korean group has spoken out on LGBTQ rights, mental health and more
In modern South Korea, pop stars and politics don’t often mix. While some hip-hop acts (such as Epik High) address controversial topics, many idol groups stick to a slick, apolitical formula with a proven record of success. BTS, who just became the first K-pop act ever to top the Billboard 200 album sales chart, have become a record-setting success story in part because of their willingness to buck this convention. The seven young men who make up the group have been speaking their minds since their debut, openly discussing LGBTQ rights, mental health and the pressure to succeed – all taboo subjects in South Korea. Their stance is particularly bold given the Korean government’s history of keeping an eye on controversial themes in pop music. By straddling the line between maintaining a respectable image and writing critical lyrics, BTS have offered a refreshing change from what some critics and fans dislike about the K-Pop machine. The group's history of open-mindedness dates back to 2013, when they were still rookies and talking about same-sex relationships could have been a career killer. The group’s leader, RM, tweeted out his admiration for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ inclusive hit “Same Love” nonetheless: “This is a song about homosexuality. The song is twice as good when I listen to the lyrics.” At the time, he was a relatively unknown musician who had little to lose. But earlier this year, RM once again took a stance on Twitter, recommending “Strawberries and Cigarettes,” a song by the openly gay musician Troye Sivan, from the gay coming-of-age film Love, Simon. These are small gestures, but they mean a lot to BTS’ fans. LGBTQ rights certainly aren’t perfect in the United States, but in South Korea, the situation is so abysmal that Amnesty International got involved last year after a South Korean soldier was sentenced to six months in prison for having a consensual homosexual relationship. Behind the screams that fill any venue where BTS performs are millions of devotees who span generations, genders, religions, nationalities and sexualities. And these fans – collectively known as ARMY – listen intently to the group’s self-penned lyrics and message, before disseminating and translating them into many languages. For BTS and their fans, acts of generosity often bear a political message. After the Sewol Ferry sank off the coast of South Korea in April 2014, killing almost 300 teenage students, Korea’s politicians tried to distance themselves from the tragedy. Grieving parents participated in hunger strikes, while conservative supporters of then-President Park Geun-Hye downplayed the deaths, saying it was time to put the calamity behind them. Reports later exposed a government-sanctioned blacklist of celebrities who appeared to criticize Park’s regime; while BTS were likely unaware of this, they demonstrated which side they supported by donating $100,000 to benefit the victims’ families. Several years ago, BTS member Suga told his fans that when he became rich, he would buy them beef – an expensive treat in today’s Korea due to high import duties. For his 25th birthday this year, he fulfilled his promise. But instead of handpicking fans to join him for dinner, he donated $19,000 worth of beef to feed orphans on behalf of ARMY. His fans were delighted and followed suit by making their own charitable donations. When BTS partnered with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for its “Love Myself” anti-violence campaign, their fans asked how they could help. This May, ARMY played a crucial role in raising $1 million in less than two days for a UNICEF USA campaign to feed malnourished children. As the group has matured from teenagers into young men, their lyrics have gained more gravitas. So, too, has their outspokenness about the issues that matter to them. They are aware that their fame gives them a huge platform. Thirty-six South Koreans commit suicide every day, according to a report from Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare. While South Korea’s government has been slow to address this problem, some BTS members have been vocal about their own bouts with depression. In their docu-series “Burn the Stage,” a fan said, “Sometimes, BTS is the only reason I wake up in the morning.” In that same episode, RM talked about how depression had previously made him afraid to go back on stage: “I was unable to enjoy things like I used to.” And in their annual New Year’s message to their fans, Suga told them, “It’s okay to live without a dream.” The group’s members know firsthand about the intense pressures many of their countrymen place on education and the negative impact this can have on mental health. With their songs, BTS tell their fans to fight back and remain alive. “Live as you like, it’s your life anyway,” they sing in the anthemic “Fire.” They continue the theme of survival on their new track, “Paradise,” telling listeners it’s okay to have modest goals: “We deserve a life.” South Korea’s leadership is listening. After BTS’ historic No. 1 placement on the Billboard 200 this week, President Moon Jae-In said, “BTS has a magical ability to turn sadness into hope, and differences into similarity.”

We had the pleasure of interviewing Maggie Szabo over Zoom video!
Maggie Szabo is a Canadian singer-songwriter who has been winning over audiences worldwide with her stunningly soulful vocals and empowering pop anthems. Hailing from a small town in Ontario, Szabo is now an accomplished musician living in Los Angeles and is using her music to conquer social injustice.
After quickly becoming one of the most sought after songwriter/vocalists for DJs and notable film and TV placements, Szabo’s latest work has focused primarily on her solo project.
Szabo uses her music to conquer social injustice by working with organizations such as the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles. Her power ballad, ‘Don’t Give Up’, is a beautifully authentic and heartfelt song dedicated to transgender youth around the world who live in fear and suffer from rejection and exclusion. It was premiered by Billboard and praised by media outlets such as PopDust and Huffington Post. Proceeds from the song are donated to empowering homeless LGBTQ youth.
Szabo’s successes to date include over 15 million views on YouTube, over 15 million streams on Spotify, and extensive media coverage from high profile outlets such as Perez Hilton, Yahoo Music!, PopCrush and Huffington Post, as well as being featured on numerous notable film and TV projects on networks such as Netflix, Disney, ABC, E!, TV Land and NBC. She was the featured vocalist on the album for German electronic DJ Schiller, who has so far sold 7 million albums worldwide. Szabo's song 'Love Is Free' was hand-picked by Jennifer Hudson to be the song for her artist, Kennedy Holmes, on the season finale of The Voice on NBC. Her song, 'Home', was released with DJ Madison Mars and was in the top 40 on the Billboard Charts. Her solo project has already landed her on some of Spotify's biggest pop playlists, including Canada's 'New Music Friday'.
With a quickly growing fan-base and a social media following that tops some of the nation’s most established pop artists, Szabo has effectively used the internet to showcase and market her songs to the world and her dedicated fans.

Happy Holigays from TQ! For the first time since sending out the guide v.1, we're going into hibernation for a bit and taking a break! Feel free to email us if you’d like ideas for where to go out, or just check RA! If you'd like to peruse past editions of the guide, they're posted on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Stay in touch, stay warm, and hope to see y’all on the dancefloor in the new year! 💗
How Charlene Incarnate Inherited the Legacy of NYC’s Drag Scene // “That’s what gay people are good at,” she acknowledges, “being audience members and contributing energy.” “We saw the shuttering of every space [queer folks threw] parties in, every space that wasn’t a typical gay dive bar. They’re all gone now.” The artist grieves both her home [Casa Diva] and the community it provided, and the fact that spaces like hers are “even rarer or nonexistent in the neighborhoods that [queer folks are] still occupying.”
“Taking drag out of nightlife is like taking it out of queerness,” Charlene says, adding that drag “happens in the spaces that were left to us.” How Papi Juice Became the Most Important Party in New York City // In 2013, Oscar Nuñez and fellow DJ Adam Rhodes were tired of going to parties catering to white, cisgender gay men — and were thus inspired to create a party that centered queer and transgender people of color. “We are part of a legacy of people who have been doing similar work for years,” Rhodes explains. “Seeing colleagues emerge and get bigger has been amazing. I love that there are more parties that are specifically serving our people. They’re creating spaces where we can be celebrated in all of our beauty and diversity.” Rare photos of New York’s iconic club kids // We were able to set an example for the everyday kid who was coming from the outer boroughs, and maybe it would give them permission to be a little more liberated within their own lives and within their own context. This was very valuable. The real tragedy when they closed all of the mega clubs in New York was that a number of creative people lost job opportunities. That’s why New York really suffered culturally when the nightclub industry was targeted and wiped out because all of a sudden people couldn’t pay their rent or sustain their art practices. That was a really sad moment for New York culturally. Masked balls and gay uprisings: Queer Maps is a guide to 150 years of LGBTQ history // The tool launches at a time of growing concern about the disappearance of queer bars in cities across the country – LA’s last remaining lesbian bar closed in 2017. It honors world-famous institutions alongside little-known haunts that quietly thrived during eras when being gay was criminalized and dangerous. Saatchi exhibits and BBC Four docs: why is 2019 so nostalgic for 80s rave? // These events were communal and often lawless. They were not happening with anyone’s permission but instead were reactions to the prevailing currents of their time. Deller’s film analyses rave’s role in the traumatised aftermath of the miners’ strike. Rave, he proposed, was “a death ritual marking the transition of Britain from an industrial to a service economy”. Techno Titan Carl Craig Commissioned for Sound Project at Dia:Beacon, Five Years in the Making // Craig—part of a fabled lineage for a legacy of techno music that was born and bred in Detroit—said he drew connections between his hometown and Dia:Beacon’s setting in a former factory that had been abandoned for years before it was transformed in an art-world destination. More to the floor: the decade the dancefloor was decolonised // Perhaps partly helped by the global panopticon of the internet, DJs and producers combine everything from the weighty syncopations of footwork to the sparse, percussive rolls of gqom and euphoria of hard trance, until the key compounds are almost unrecognisable – and then add their own distinctive local flavour. The result is a simultaneously global and local sound, and cross-continental collaborations are making it even more cosmopolitan. First Floor #13 – Where Have All the Anthems Gone? // More and more, what matters is contextualizing an artist within a larger socioeconomic and sociopolitical backdrop. Writers and editors obviously still consider the music, but they’re now also thinking about stuff like identity, representation, privilege and structural discrimination, and while that rubs some people the wrong way—particularly the “it should just be about the music” crowd—I don’t see it as a problem. Leave Your Body at the Door: How ketamine became the drug of choice for our dissociated moment. // In the 1980s and ’90s, the growth of rave culture brought it onto New York dance floors and it became a staple of the club kid scene, prompting the first wave of ketamine trend pieces. “Whether it’s a gay all-nighter, or at a hard techno rave patronized by young, white out-of-towners, the picture is invariably the same. Come 3 a.m., the dance floor is littered with those wasted on ketamine,” Muzik Magazine wrote in that same 1998 article. But in 2019, once-fringe elements of rave culture have bled into the mainstream. EDM is elevator music, banker bros and leather-daddies share bumps at Bushwick warehouse events, Silicon Valley has invaded Burning Man, and the wellness world has turned the drugs of the ’60s counterculture into productivity boosters for start-ups. As rave culture has rebranded, ketamine has pivoted with it. Today’s K users are bringing the drug beyond the dance floor: to chilled-out bar nights and tech-world salons, New-Age wellness retreats and quiet nights at home. NYC Votes To Ban Flavored Vaping Products // New York became the first major city in the country to ban all flavored vaping products on Tuesday. The ban is expected to take effect in July. The crackdown also comes amid an outbreak of vape-related lung disease that's killed dozens of people nationwide, including at least two New York City residents. Researchers with the Center for Disease Control have linked the sickness to vitamin E acetate, which is commonly used in black market THC vaping products.

This Week Within Our Country
An illegal immigrant who was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement by San Francisco police is to be awarded $190,000. Pedro Figueroa-Zarceno sued the city of San Francisco for violating its own sanctuary laws when police officers at Southern Station allegedly cooperated with immigration authorities to detain him. “It’s really important for San Francisco to remain a sanctuary city not in name only but also in practice,” said Saira Hussain, the attorney who represented Figueroa-Zarceno. She says that she hopes the settlement will encourage the city to follow its own sanctuary laws.
California became the seventh state to join the lawsuit challenging President Trump’s revised travel ban. So they’re against travel bans, eh? State Attorney General Xavier Becerra, the same guy who blasted Trump’s travel ban, announced the state is extending its state-funded and state-sponsored travel ban to four more red states: Alabama, Kentucky, South Dakota and Texas, which join Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee in being targeted by AB 1887, which attacks states that it says have laws discriminating against the LGBTQ community. AB 1887 became law on January 1; it states that California does not support or finance "discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people." Yet it boasts sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants and fights to welcome people from countries where killing, imprisoning and torturing LGBT people is legal and common practice.
A black Mississippi high school graduate sued her school district this week after she shared valedictorian status with a white student. The student and her mother are under the impression that the white student had a lower GPA and the only reason she wasn’t the outright winner was because of racism, despite the Mississippi school district confirming both students had the exact same GPA. As such, under school board policy, they were both named valedictorian of their graduating class. Still, it’s racism. The student and her mother have launched a “Justice for Jasmine” Facebook page. “The outpouring of good wishes and prayers have brought encouragement at some of the most darkest hours,” a recent post reads. The lawsuit seeks an unknown amount of money and wants Shephard to be declared the only valedictorian.
There is a growing split among Black Lives Matter and the LGBT movement. First they demanded for black and blown stripes to be included into the flag, now Black Lives Matter have published an open letter slamming NYC Pride for having police helping protect their parade, saying Pride events are not doing a good enough job at recognizing the dangers blacks face by the military forces (police). Black Lives Matter NYC said they hoped a dialogue with NYC Pride organizers would begin "about the safety of black and brown folks." BLM had three main demands for Pride: The removal of uniformed police from future events, a commitment to transform Pride events to center the lives of black communities and “the honoring of our ancestors and elders with true integrity.”
The White House notched a policy win when the House of Representatives passed a pair of Trump-backed immigration enforcement bills. The bills, which target sanctuary cities and illegal immigrants who re-enter the U.S. after being deported, are the first immigration legislation that Congress has advanced since Trump took office. If the 52 Senate Republicans want to get Trump’s signature, they will have to persuade at least eight of their Democratic colleagues to break party ranks. Kate’s Law looks the most likely to pass, while the “No Sanctuary for Criminals” bill on the other hand enjoys far less support on the Democratic side, just three House Democrats voted for it.
A self-professed asexual, genderqueer woman hopes her five year-old daughter also turns out to be “queer,” after already converting her daughter to identify as a boy. B.R. Sanders, a woman who identifies as transgender and a member of a polyamorous relationship, raises “Arthur” with her two other queer partners, Jon and Samantha. “Arthur” was actually born a female, but they decided at the age of three that he was a boy. Now Arthur presents as a boy. “When Arthur displayed a great deal of gender non-conforming behavior as a teensy child, we all welcomed it.” Sanders also says it would be strange for them if her child decided she was straight. “We do joke that it will be strange if Arthur comes out to us as straight,” she says. “We’re all half-expecting him to turn out like us.”
CNN has been exposed for pushing the false Russia-Trump collusion myth. There has been a number of instances now in which CNN either misrepresented the facts or completely botched a story. Recently they have had to retract several stories and several employers have been laid off. Employees have also been caught saying the Russia story doesn’t exist and they are only pushing it for ratings and because they don’t like Trump. Leadership at CNN decided to impose new rules on Russia coverage because the latest bungled stories seemingly proved to be the tipping point for the higher-ups. The New York Times have also had to retract their Russia claims.
Members of a Jewish LGBT group in Chicago were harassed, screamed at and berated before being publicly ousted from the Chicago’s “Dyke March,” which is part of Chicago Pride but is meant to be “more inclusive.” The organizers said their Jewish rainbow banner made other marchers feel “unsafe” so it was within their rights to remove the Jewish LGBT group altogether. Dyke March participants said that the attendees were “pro-Palestinian” because “Dyke Marches across the country are meant to represent the struggle of oppressed people.”
A black Mississippi man who thinks the state flag symbolizes white supremacy is taking his case to the U.S. Supreme Court. His lawsuit claims the flag to be “state-sanctioned hate speech” and wants it removed. He also claims the flag violates his constitutional right to equal protection. Several cities and towns, as well as all eight of the state’s public universities, have stopped flying the flag due to concerns that it is offensive to the state’s black population. Should the Supreme Court decide to take the lawsuit, a decision in favor could mean the banning of all official use of Confederate imagery across the country. The Supreme Court will address the case in October.
A gender-neutral option was made available on Washington, D.C. driver’s licenses, making D.C. the first in the nation to offer such and option. “X,” the new gender neutral identifier, is now featured alongside “M” and “F,” to accommodate D.C. citizens who identify as a “non-binary” gender. D.C. residents will also now be allowed to change the gender on their I.D. to whichever they identify as, without being required to get signed approval from a health care provider before changing their gender. Oregon is the next jurisdiction lined up to offer a gender neutral option in its state issued licenses.
In a worrying growing trend, another black criminal filmed himself starting a gun battle with police. He started streaming what was happening on his cellphone, telling this audience, "They're about to kill me.” The incident was precipitated by officers serving a warrant as part of an investigation into a March 31 killing. Officers noticed one of the homicide suspects, who fled with the police in pursuit. That pursuit led to El Segundo where the suspect ditched his car and ran through an apartment complex shooting at multiple officers.
Canadian Conservative senators have blocked a bill approved by Justin Trudeau that would have made the country’s national anthem lyrics gender neutral and more inclusive of women. It tried to change the national anthem lyrics by altering the line “in all thy sons commands” to “in all of us command” in a bid to make the anthem more inclusive and remove gendered language from the anthem. Senator David Wells explained his opposition to the bill, saying national symbols shouldn’t be changed to the “flavor of the day” and added that the Canadians weren’t actually consulted on the change.

‘GAGA: Five Foot Two’ leaps beyond expectations.
Lady Gaga took the world by storm way back in 2008. Her outrageous outfits and catchy digital pop tunes rapidly placed her in very prestigious pedestal unheard of before. Her Netflix documentary ‘GAGA: Five Foot Two’ is anything but basic, as she pour her heart out in the film.
Fast forward to 2017, fresh off from her Superbowl Halftime show and sold out worldtour comes out her first in-depth netflix documentary. She talks about Madonna, music process, image, broken engagement and chronis health pain; once again Gaga did not fall short.
Before we dive into the documentary, it is important to note her notable music material that made history in the music industry. Her debut album ‘The Fame’ and extended play ‘The Fame Monster’ is a powerhouse album of pure pop and golden synths.
Tumblr media
Bad Romance, Just Dance, Poker Face, Telephone ft. Beyonce and Paparazzi were the chart-topping singles that garnered awards and accolades worldwide. Played from 2008 up to early 2011, Gaga worked and danced her way to the top. This time period is also the era where a new artist climbed the success and fame ladder so fast she became the both the face of Time magazine and Rolling Stone’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (meat dress and other outfits).
Her next album, Born this Way is the international anthem of love, peace and LGBTQ.
Tumblr media
Her message of self-love and empowerment created a strong following and fan base. Dubbed as ‘little monsters’, her fans have been touched by her advocacies and message that they have bestowed upon her the title ‘Mother Monster’ and their undoubted ‘Queen of Pop’.
Tumblr media
Her third album ‘ARTPOP,’ is a homage to Andy Warhol’s infamous ‘Pop Art’. She combined electronic music and Italian art references to her work. Lead singles ‘Applause’ and ‘Do What U Want’ earned platinum certification on Europe, India, Japan, North America and Latin America.
After her jazz collaboration with Tony Bennet, she released her recent self-titled album ‘Joanne’.
Tumblr media
Gaga went back to her roots with ‘Joanne’ and toned down her music style. As a versatile and talented artist that she is, she shifted into the country pop genre and serenaded her way to people’s heart with lead singles ‘Perfect Illusion’ and ‘Million Reasons’. This album is dedicated to her family, and her aunt named Joanne who died of lupus.
Directed by Emmy (R)-nominated filmmaker Chris Moukarbel (Banksy Does New York, Me at the Zoo), the film is shot in the style of cinema verité, giving viewers unfiltered, behind-the-scenes access as Gaga spends time with close friends and family members, records and releases her 2016 album Joanne and, deals with personal struggles.
She is seen recording her highly personal album “Joanne” with producer Mark Ronson and guest vocalist Florence Welch of Florence & the Machine and planning every aspect of its release—important since her last foray into pop music, “Artpop,” was largely considered to be a dud—with the kind of precision one normally attributes to military strikes. At the same time she is doing this, she is also shooting a role for the “Roanoke” cycle of “American Horror Story” and being wooed by Bradley Cooper to star in his directorial debut, a remake of “A Star is Born.” There are special performances that she delivers at the Democratic National Convention and a birthday celebration for Tony Bennett. Finally, there is that Super Bowl performance, which she regards as a sort of summation of her career to date as well as being a chance to help bring together through music a deeply divided American population still reeling from the recent presidential election.
Tumblr media
Also highlighted on her documentary, her message that everyone suffers including her. After heavy criticisms on her ‘ARTPOP’ album and lost her grip on the center stage of the music industry, she underlines the hard work needed and the real price to pay to go back from her ‘GAGA’ days.
Gaga finally shares her chronic pain to her fans. Although she is often able to work through the pain with her indefatigable energy, there are moments when we see her barely able to move as a result of what she describes as a “rope of agony” extending throughout her body. That said, this does lead to one of the most bizarrely amusing moments in the film when Gaga goes in for a medical examination and has a procedure done while her makeup people are doing their thing to prepare her for her next appointment.
Anyone who loves pop culture and misses the old ‘Gaga’ must really watch the documentary as it is not only a look into her life, but also a message of looking in to the future.
Stay strong Mother Monster!

Never Has it Ever Been “Just a Game”
In the documentary Not Just a Game, narrator Dave Zirin argues that the general American population pushes so hard against the mixing of sports and politics, but the very nature and history of sports makes them inherently political. This is an idea that I had never thought about before, but after hearing his argument, I completely agree that you cannot take politics out of sports. I argue that Zirin is correct in saying that you cannot separate politics from sports because the social aspects and issues surrounding sports culture are tied very closely to political issues.
One prominent issue in current day sports culture is the controversy of teams using “Indians” or “Redskins” as mascots. Teams all over the country, ranging from high school teams to professional, use dated caricatures of Native Americans. Over the past couple of years, it has become a very public debate around the Washington Redskins, Washington D.C.’s NFL team. There is strong backlash from both sides of the argument, those in favor of the mascot staying arguing that it is a tradition that honors indigenous people and that a mascot is just a mascot, while those opposing saying that it is blatantly racist. Many people are also angry that it is an issue altogether, saying to keep politics out of sports. But as Zirin proved in the film, you can’t separate the two. Interestingly, a survey conducted by the Washington Post showed that 9 out of 10 Native Americans polled in 2016 were not offended by the mascot, but nonetheless, the mascot is shown to reinforce implicit racial bias.
Another recent controversy proving that politics cannot be separated from sports centers around Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem. Kaepernick is the former quarterback of the 49ers, and has a very public platform that he can use to send a message to millions of people. He decided to use his publicity to draw attention to police brutality and oppression of black people by kneeling during the national anthem before NFL games. This silent, non-violent act of simply kneeling created major backlash, including people who wanted him to keep his political agenda out of football.
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/22/sports/basketball/nba-all-star-game-moves-charlotte-transgender-bathroom-law.html?mcubz=3
In this video, Jemele Hill points out how we as a society understand that it is the duty of those in privileged positions to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, but people don’t like when an athlete takes a stand like this. Athletes are the people in America with money, popularity, and the power it takes to get people to listen, so it only makes sense that they would create a major impact by taking a political stand for something they believe in.
One more contemporary example of how sports are inevitably intertwined with politics is how the NBA decided to move the 2019 All Star game out of Charlotte, North Carolina in protest of North Carolina’s new bill that discriminates against LGBTQ people, specifically against trans* people from using the bathroom of the gender they identify with. A statement made by the NBA in 2016 stated, “While we recognize that the N.B.A. cannot choose the law in every city, state and country in which we do business, we do not believe we can successfully host our All-Star festivities in Charlotte in the climate created by the current law.”
All of these examples have happened in the past couple of years, and there are so many more examples from throughout history and current day that support Zirin’s claim. Many people will continue to deny the inherent political quality of sports, but it is clear that there is no sign of the trend ending.

Women's World Cup: Why France 2019 will go down as Megan Rapinoe's tournament
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/womens-world-cup-why-france-2019-will-go-down-as-megan-rapinoes-tournament/
Women's World Cup: Why France 2019 will go down as Megan Rapinoe's tournament
Tumblr media Tumblr media
USA co-captain Megan Rapinoe won the Golden Ball, the Golden Boot and the World Cup trophy in France
“Equal pay! Equal pay!”
The chorus of defiant chanting from fans at the sold-out Stade de Lyon confirmed everyone’s suspicions: this was Megan Rapinoe’s World Cup.
The USA co-captain took home the trophy for the second tournament in a row. She scored the opener in the final, won the Golden Boot, the Golden Ball and was the official Fifa player of the match in Lyon.
Beyond the pitch, she’s defied the world’s most powerful leader, told football’s governing body they lack respect for the women’s game and voiced her LGBTQ+ allegiance with two simple words during Pride month: “Go gays!”
Film stars are considering dying their hair purple as a tribute; her showman-like open-arm celebration became a meme.
“Megan was built for these moments,” said victorious coach Jill Ellis after the USA’s 2-0 win over the Netherlands in Sunday’s final.
“The bigger the spotlight, the bigger she shines.”

Women’s World Cup: USA 2-0 Netherlands highlights
At 34, Rapinoe is far from a new face or name in women’s football.
She has played for seven different clubs across three continents, winning the NWSL Shield with Reign FC on two occasions, as well as the French top division with Lyon. For her country, she is an Olympic gold medallist and now two-time World Cup winner.
If you look back at her showreel, she has always been an entertainer. At the 2011 World Cup, when the Americans finished as runners-up to Japan, she scored against Colombia and celebrated by grabbing a stadium microphone and singing Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA”.
But with the women’s game more visible and more popular than ever before, it feels as if Rapinoe – and what she stands for – is now centre stage.
During the group stages, when the USA came through with three wins from three games, she was filmed saying she would not go to the White House – or words to that effect – if she was invited by President Trump. Cue a Twitter response from the US leader, which included the line: “Megan should win first, before she talks.”
She was then shown on television screens worldwide staying silent during the national anthem, a move she has made in support of American football quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
The interest in the forward swelled, just in time for her to score the opener in the USA’s quarter-final win over hosts France.
The Californian held court in the build-up to Sunday’s final, with journalists hanging on to her every word as she questioned Fifa’s unequal approach to prize money in the women’s and men’s game.
“I feel invincible,” she said after lifting the trophy. “We’ve put on the most incredible show that anyone could have asked for. We can’t be better ambassadors. A little public shame never hurt anyone, right?”
Of course, 158-cap Rapinoe isn’t the only star of the USA’s side – far from it, in fact.
Alex Morgan has long been established as the commercial face of the national team, with extra-curricular activities including modelling, acting and writing.
Morgan’s five goals in the USA’s 13-0 win over Thailand, plus another against England which prompted the famous tea-sipping celebration, put her in line to be top scorer before Rapinoe stepped up and equalled her tally against the Netherlands – taking the Golden Boot because she had scored six in fewer minutes.
Washington Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle was also impressive throughout, scoring three goals – including the second in Sunday’s final – and earning the Bronze Ball trophy for the tournament’s third-best player.
But there was still only one name on everyone’s lips.
“Megan’s a player who uses her platform and her voice in the right way and that’s needed – she stands up for things,” said BBC pundit and former England defender Alex Scott.
“I’m not sure how long she’ll be around for but if she does stop she’ll be going out on top,” added goalkeeper Hope Solo, her former US team-mate.
True to form, Rapinoe made a dramatic entrance as she came to talk to the media after the USA’s victory parade.
She bounded in late, following a regulation doping test, and interrupted coach Ellis in mid-flow.
“I’ve got a party to get to, y’all,” she quipped, before assuming her position in front of the microphone.
“I think everyone is ready for this conversation to move to the next level,” she said when asked about the “equal pay” chanting at the final whistle, which was prompted by the arrival on the pitch of Fifa president Gianni Infantino.
Megan Rapinoe was presented with the Golden Boot by Fifa president Gianni Infantino
“I think we are done with the questions like ‘are we worth it?’, ‘should we have equal pay?’ Everyone’s done with that. Let’s get to the next point of ‘what’s next?’ How do we support women around the world? How can Fifa do that?”
While her country’s leader tweeted again, this time to offer his congratulations to the team, coach Ellis summed up Rapinoe’s influence on women’s football – and the global stage – in one sentence.
“For some people the spotlight can burn – but for Megan, it highlights who she is.”

LGBT Community Celebrates It’s First Independence Day With This Version Of National Anthem!
India might have celebrated its 73rd Independence Day yesterday but it was truly the first Independence Day for the LGBT community. It seems like just yesterday when the Supreme Court decriminalized Section 377 on September 6, 2018, granting the members of the LGBTQ community the same sexual rights as any other citizen in India.
To celebrate this historic Independence Day, The Humsafar Trust- One of the first organizations in Asia working for LGBT community rights has shared a heartwarming version of National Anthem and we are all proud and emotional at the same time.
The film honours and features filmmakers, writers, activists and advocates of the LGBTQ+ community who have struggled for their equality by always standing with pride with them.
Check out this heart-warming version of National Anthem which is giving a tribute to India’s LGBT community.

This short film has been scripted, conceptualized and created by Interactive Avenues, a digital arm of IPG Mediabrands India. Iger Says What Sort of President He’d Be, Then Visits Iowa
Bob Iger, Walt Disney Co.s chief executive officer, is letting on what kind of leader hed be if he ever shoots for that other big CEO job: president of the U.S.
In the May issue of Vogue, Iger, 67, lays out his support for football players who kneel during the national anthem, LGBTQ rights, the Paris climate accord and the #MeToo movement, issues that endear him to Hollywood. He also backs legal status for dreamers, the immigrants brought here illegally when they were children, and says hes “horrified” by American politics today.
The article is vague on Igers future political plans, if any. He was weighing a bid for the White House when Disney reached an agreement in December to buy most of 21st Century Fox for $52.4 billion. Since then, Disneys CEO has extended his contract to lead the worlds largest entertainment company through 2021.
Oprah Winfrey, another rumored presidential candidate, said in the article shed go door-to-door for Iger. “I really, really pushed him to run,” Winfrey told Vogue.
The Vogue profile centers, initially, on the success of “Black Panther,” the film divisions latest megahit. It also covers some well-reported areas of Igers life — his focus in fitness with days that start just after 4 a.m., but it also chronicles how he met his wife and his relationship with his father.
The profile posted online a day after Iger visited a childrens hospital that Disney supports in Des Moines, Iowa, a must-stop state for any presidential candidate.

Gloria Estefan’s Very Gay Year
Why of course global queer icon Gloria Estefan – subject of Broadway musical On Your Feet, and muse to drag queens worldwide – has a daughter who is not straight.
To close out 2017, Gloria’s 23-year-old daughter, Emily, celebrated – for the first time publicly – her one-year anniversary with girlfriend Geremy Hernández via Instagram. Emily’s snap of the couple was captioned, “Happy anniversary to my delicate, bold, intelligent, important, honest, loving, funny (but not funnier than me), brave, compassionate, patient, badass, talented, and the most beautiful… Moon Flower. I love you.”
Considering Gloria’s everlasting love and support for the LGBTQ community, Emily’s refreshingly matter-of-fact coming out, then, must’ve been the sweet, sweet icing on her pop-legend mother’s already-queer year.
Gloria, who left an indelible stamp on ’80s pop music with trailblazing crossover hits like “Conga” and “Rhythm is Gonna Get You,” starred in last year’s seemingly made-for-Trump-voters, empathy-spurring dramedy A Change of Heart, winner of the OUTshine Film Festival Audience Award for Best Feature. The Queen of Latin Pop portrays Dr. Fajardo (her “alter ego,” as she originally studied psychology at the University of Miami and planned to be a doctor), the therapist who advises Jim Belushi’s bigoted, Fox News-watching dad character, Hank, as he comes to terms with the foolish possibility that his new heart from a recent transplant is, as Gloria puts it, “pumping gayness into him.”
Hank’s youngest daughter, Josie (Aimee Teegarden), also just happens to be a lesbian, but neither Estefan nor her husband Emilio (both produced the film, while longtime Gloria-collaborator Kenny Ortega directed) never mentioned Emily’s own queerness when we met up at a red carpet event at the festival in late April in their hometown of Miami to discuss the queer-themed project – the woke Estefans know you let your children make that statement when they’re good and ready. But they did express, as always, their passion for equality, with Gloria acknowledging – because she is officially Global Mother to the Gays now – “I just felt natural in the role.”
“To us we’re allies because we’re human beings,” Gloria simply stated. “That’s the bottom line. Everybody is a human being. We’re all the same. We always see everyone as the same, whatever their preference is for love, sex, religion, culture. That’s always been important to us.”
That creed extends to their roles as equal-opportunity business owners. Regarding Estefan Enterprises, which comprises their entertainment company, restaurants, hotels and a beach resort, Emilio says, “(Whether) you’re Latino or gay – you have to see somebody based on the kind of work they’re gonna do, and I think that’s happening now. I think it’s a lot better – much, much better.”
Gloria’s life, and career-long commitment to stand for racial and economic justice, immigration equality and marriage equality, culminated in October 2017, when Gloria was honored by the National LGBTQ Task Force (Miami) with the National Leadership Award for being a staunch LGBTQ ally and “for her work to support … the issues that affect their lives every day,” the press release noted.
“Her recent work serves as a testament of her humble beginnings as a Cuban immigrant and as an artist who has always held her LGBTQ fan base in her heart,” said Josue Santiago, chair of the Task Force’s Miami Gala.
Gloria’s gay-aligned ventures don’t stop there: Given her 2017, the singer’s contribution to the queer update of Netflix’s endearing reboot of One Day at a Time – the show’s theme song, advising that you “keep doing what you do” – seems right in step with her gay-adjacent career. Her musical roots are, after all, steeped in queer fandom.
“The gay community was one of the first communities that supported us because we were huge in the clubs and in the gay clubs, particularly, because the gay community is usually a little bit ahead of trends and musical trends and fashion trends,” she recalls.
DJ Pablo Flores, remixer of Gloria’s megahits “Dr. Beat” and Conga,” spun songs she produced with Emilio at a Puerto Rican gay club during the onset of her career with the Miami Sound Machine, when she joined in 1977 as the band’s frontwoman (talk about gay – the band was originally called the Miami Latin Boys). Gloria describes Flores and the gay clubs who took them under their wings in the ’80s as “cutting edge and very supportive of us and our music in the beginning.”
Gloria was spurred to action on behalf of the LGBTQ community around that time, when AIDS took the lives of many of her dearest friends and music-business colleagues.
“In the ’80s, when the AIDS epidemic was huge, we were losing a lot of our top people and people were becoming even more scared,” she recalls. “We lost many close friends and coworkers. I just think when someone is under attack, anything I can do to support them is a good thing.”
In a statement to press, Gloria said, “I feel incredibly honored to be receiving the National LGBTQ Task Force’s Leadership Award and feel doubly blessed that it (is) in my beautiful hometown, Miami Beach. I look forward to the day when no task forces are necessary in order to ensure that each individual is considered equal in every respect.” On Dec. 26, 2017, Gloria was recognized yet again for her unwavering support and empathy for every kind, becoming the first Cuban-American to receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor Award during the event’s 40th year.
Her now-out daughter, Emily, a fellow musician, attended with her girlfriend and performed Gloria’s inspirational official song for the 1996 Summer Olympics, “Reach,” a dreamer anthem with strong ties to people within the queer community. Two of Gloria’s biggest singles, “Always Tomorrow” and “Coming Out of the Dark,” have also long served as LGBTQ lifelines.
“(Gay people) tell me wonderful things, but not just because they happen to be gay, but because they were going through tough things in their lives and my music inspired them to push forward or to stay positive in a situation,” Gloria reflects, passionately. “My fans – I have a lot of gay fans. I still look out into the audience and I have fans from two years old to 80. I have very young kids on my Twitter – young gay kids who for some reason my music speaks to them. Maybe the empowerment, or they use it to get through tough moments. That’s what music is about. That’s what makes me happy about getting to make music.”
