Exclusive Interview: Luke Gilford & Charlie Plummer on dreamy queer rodeo movie National Anthem
Growing up in Evergreen, Colorado, some of filmmaker and photographer Luke Gilford’s most vivid childhood memories are of being at the rodeo with his father, who was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Leaving the rural Southwest for New York City and Los Angeles, Gilford only returned to the rodeo arenas of his youth in 2016 when he discovered the International Gay Rodeo…

Ghost - Oscar Piastri x UnknownDriver! Reader Part 4
Plot: Reader is the first female F1 driver of the century, however no-one knows that as you are a ghost on the grid. You started in 2022, coming in P12 in the championship. You get moved to Red Bull Racing in 2023 with the off year for Sergio Perez.

You were chilling in the cool down room with Max and Charles who had managed to overtake Carlos on the last lap. Your hair was a mess, and you'd had to ask Max to unbraid it.
"Why is it so knotted!" Max complained as he brushed his finger through to get the top of the braid loose.
"Well... I've just been driving at 200mph for the last hour and a half, you guess!" you laugh at him before grabbing a towel and wiping it across your red face.
"That was a really good call on your behalf Y/N, you won us the race!" Max smiles, watching the onscreen of you both tag-teaming Carlos. It then switches to Charles taking over Carlos in the last few seconds of the race. You swish your hand in a motion, the overtake being cold and crisp.
"Damn, that was cold" you exclaim, shaking your hand off turning to Charles.
"Says you with that move you pulled!" Charles exclaims watching on another screen a playback of your driving.
After some time in the room you are called out for the podium. Charles walks out first, Max walking out a few seconds after him before you walk out using Charles block to boost yourself up onto the P1 podium spot.
The British national anthem plays and you look up, at the screen that shows your flag and you stood with it. You smile proudly happy to hear it once again.
Afterwards, your all presented with the trophy's. You push your trophy up into the air, the whole of your team cheering and jumping up and down. Geri was filming you and Max while Christian was celebrating down below with the team. Proud of you not only for the fantastic drive but the strategies you called out as well that put the team ahead.
Your eyes look around seeing if it was just Ferrari and Red Bull here to celebrate, which is was with the exception of a few Alpine members who you were close with in your time there and Fernando Alonso who was your team mate from 2022.
You thought maybe Oscar would be there, as the start of an apology. Where he would explain he'd been stressed when doing the interview and he didn't mean any of what he said.
After that interview though he didn't seem like he wanted to be your friend anymore. The last few weeks, hadn't been unbearable for you. You'd just been giving Oscar space like Lando had tried to tell you too.
However, after what he said about you in that interview you didn't even want to talk to him.
You were guided to interviews most of the questions not being about racing, just being about you and Oscar and how you were feeling about what he said about you.
Most people who were watching the interviews could tell from your spacey look and your need for the interviewer to repeat more often than not, that you weren't really there with them.
You refused to speak on the matter with you and Oscar, leaving it with a small 'you didn't want to comment on it'.
You of course put the weekend behind you preparing for Singapore, it was tense and for the whole time it was a a fight between you and Piastri. Somehow, your Pit Stop had been fucked up. A communication error of course between your team and the engineers making you and Max pit at the same time.
Because of this you came behind Oscar, in P8, Max had also only got P5 so you knew it wasn't a happy day for Red Bull. You were clearly annoyed in your post race media duties and you left Singapore as soon as possible. No longer wanting to stay there.
There was of course more comments from Oscar which were obviously aimed at you. You'd clipped his wheel when he'd gone into a turn too tight and he'd nearly spun out, he'd complained suggesting he was leaning more towards a skill issue than car issue.
Japan wasn't any better with a DNF, that was your fault that had you stewing in your drivers room for the rest of the race.
Again, Oscar had comments about your DNF, more subtle this time as he didn't specifically comment on your DNF as there was quiet a few.
Christian and Max were getting worried about you, to the point they hired someone for you to talk too. They didn't know what this mental funk was that you were in but they knew you were a better driver than this and they wanted that girl back who was able to beat Max.
So you talked, to a lady who dealt with athletes and performance issues when it came to a mental mindset. After, it was like you had a whole different outlook on race weekends.
Qatar was better, despite it being a head fuck. You came P4, just outside a podium where Lando and Oscar were depending together despite Max trying to help you from P1 but ultimately was told not to sacrifice the race to help get a double podium.
Oscar had not only come P2 in the actual race, but he'd won the sprint shoot out.
"Y/N, great race! You seem better and like your back to racing!" the interviewer asks and you nod, using the ice cold towel you were given to wipe across your face.
"Yeah, I think after my wins i struggled in both Singapore and Japan it was just one thing after another and it knocked my confidence. But you know after some talks with the team and getting that help that I needed, I'm happy with where we are right now. Today was an incredibly hard race because of the heat. We've had a lot of people go to the medical tent because of the conditions so yeah it wasn't my best run... but It's better than it has been" you smiled at the interviewer.
Your PR manager hands you another bottle of water, taking the empty one from your hands.
"How do you feel about Oscar Piastri's sprint race win, and his P2 podium?" she asks and you struggle not to roll your eyes at the question. Sometimes you feel like your being interviewed for a gossip magazine rather than talking about your sport.
"I'm really happy for him. Considering the conditions both he and Lando had a fantastic race today. They got great points for Mclaren today and I'm sure the team is also really happy!" you smile nodding.
"Some kind words there from Y/N on Oscar Piastri unlike what he had to say about her earlier today before the start of the race when we caught him, but she proved him wrong" says the interviewer as your walked away.
"What did Oscar say about me?" you ask, but were ignored and told to focus on the next week ahead.
Austin again was great for you coming P4 with Max in P1 and Oscar with an unfortunate DNF. Mexico was also good, you and Max were able to split the Ferrari's up and get a double podium. Charles defended from you very well and you weren't able to get DRS or a slipstream from him so you ended in P3.
Brazil was good as well, very close to having another podium but Fernando Alonso was half a second ahead of you.
Vegas was going to be good until Charles overtook you on the last lap just down to race pace. You weren't far behind him at he end and nearly caught up with him but you got to share a podium with the pair of them again.
And again, in Abu Dhabi you placed 4th. It was a good season and you'd placed 2nd in the constructors not far behind your team mate Max.
You hadn't interacted with Oscar at all, you'd refused to speak about him in interviews. Lando and you had text on multiple occasions and he tried to stay away from talking about Oscar but you asked out of concern. But with the winter break, you were going to concentrate solely on getting fitter and working for the season ahead.
2024 would be a wild year, you were sure of it!

I have assumptions on what MIGHT have been parts of the cut out version of hunger games the ballad of songbirds and snakesss
Okay one, MORE MAUDE IVORY. They had to shorten the film down with an hour so I guess they didn’t view her as an important character </3
Two, THE FUNERAL OF ARACHNE CRANE!?! I’d pass out of coriolanus started singing the national anthem of panem though (however I believe this should have been teased in interviews BUT I WANT TOM BELTING IT HAHA) This also includes the humiliating truck with the tied down tributes as the corpse of the deceased district 10 girl hang on a hook in a crane over them.
LUCY GRAY’S LOVE FOR SWEET THINGS LOL. This isn’t important at all but I thought the bread pudding moments in the book was kinda adorable…

While filming Newsies 1992 David Moscow (92sies David) and Christian Bale (92sies Jack) shared a double trailer, basically a long trailer with a wall in the middle. They could hear "literally everything" through the wall. In an interview David said "I would start singing the 'National Anthem' and he would start singing 'God Save the Queen' and we would try and out-sing each other as loud as we could"

Sweet Serial Killer Final Part
ONCE AGAIN, THIS IS THE FINAL PART TO SWEET SERIAL KILLER. IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE FIRST FIVE PARTS, I STRONGLY RECCOMMEND THAT YOU DO.
NATIONAL ANTHEM
WARNINGS - YALL THIS IS THE FINAL PART AND IS INTENDED TO BE A SORT OF DOCUMENTARY LIKE REFLECTION OF THE READER AND JASON THAT WAS RELEASED AFTER THEY WERE PUT TO DEATH IN PRISON; DEATH PENTALTY MENTION; GORE; BLOOD; ATTEMPTED RAPE; KIDNAPPING
A/N - DO REMEMBER THAT WHILST THIS IS JASON TODD, HIS MIND IS SICK AND TWISTED. HIS OBSESSION IS ACTUALLY QUITE A TOXIC SITUATION, BE WARY
NAVIGATION
Tumblr media
"This is a documentary following the reign of terror brought about by notorious Serial Killer Jason Todd, and his indoctrinated yet loyal lover, Y/n L/n. Warning, this film contains mature themes that young viewers may find disturbing."
An image of you staring out of the barred window of your cell flashes onto the screen. You're muttering a small phrase to yourself that's inaudible to the viewers. The fingers on your right hand are clutched tightly around a handwritten letter and your leg bounces impatiently.
The screen then flashes to Jason, who sits in a cell identical to yours. He's twirling a pencil between his fingers and reading To Kill A Mockingbird with a gentle smirk on his face. A pair of guards approach the cell with handcuffs and Jason leaves the book open on the cot with an singular underlined line.
"Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
The handsome face of Bruce Wayne appears with the interviewer sitting off screen and attempting to gauge how Gotham's resident billionaire was feeling about what his adopted son and girlfriend had done.
"So, what can you tell us about Jason growing up?"
The screen flickers to a stoic Dick Grayson.
"Growing up, Jason was... intense. He'd always been just a little bit much y'know?"
When it flashes to Tim, he's sitting at his desk in Wayne Enterprises and doesn't even glance up at the camera.
"I don't know. Jason was a normal kid as far as I could tell. We really weren't that close."
Tim doesn't appear for the remainder of the documentary. It was clear that he was hiding something behind his light blue irises, but in any case, the film crew couldn't get time on his schedule to ask him any more questions.
"I adopted Jason when he was 12. I'd hoped to be able to love the darkness out of him. When he was kidnapped and pronounced dead, something shifted in him and he just wasn't really the same anymore. I guess that's where all of this started with him."
The voice of the FBI Agent who arrested the two of you appears over a fuzzy video of you and Jason waltzing through a hotel lobby. The dress you were wearing looked like it cost an arm and a leg even though the flickering static of the footage. There wasn't any sound but it was clear that you had your head thrown back in a laugh.
"The love story between Todd and L/n was incredibly unusual. You had this sweet, girl-next-door beauty who suddenly found herself the object of a damaged, yet devastatingly handsome man's affections."
Pictures filled the screen of police reports and evidence from way back when in the case. The bloody crime scenes, the hearts he'd mailed to you, the image of the street worker who's chest had been carved beyond belief.
"It's only predictable that, especially after the kidnapping, that this woman might find herself with one of the strongest cases of Stockholm Syndrome that the Bureau's ever seen."
Suddenly, Jason's face was shown. He was sitting behind a layer of plexiglass and guards were posted in every corner of the room.
"Jason, we've spoken to a few of your family members, but what was your relationship with Y/n like?"
Jason smiled boastfully and sat up a little straighter in his seat at the mention of your name.
"Y/n and I are so in love and she's the best wife I could have ever asked for. There's nothing more freeing than finding yourself in an unexpected romance. Nothing could ever come between us. Y/n, if you're watching this beautiful, I dream of you every night and I promise that when they finally kill me, I'll find you again. I will always be closer to you than your breath."
"After L/n's first kill, she and Todd left Star City, where she'd been at the time. A conversation with her previous employer and friend Roy Harper suggested that even those deepest in L/n and Todd's personal life had no idea what was going on behind closed doors. Todd and L/n are considered two of the deadliest people to have ever lived. The combined efforts of the pair's sex appeal and ingenuity made them the most elusive of criminals."
An image of you smelling a rose was next to take over the screen.
"So, Y/n, what was your relationship with Jason like?"
You chuckled gently and brushed a piece of hair from your face.
"Being with Jason was being as free as a mockingbird. A lot of people think that there was some sort of Stockholm Syndrome involved but, at least on my end there wasn't any. I pledged allegiance to him and after that, everything was easy."
"What was easy?"
"It's a love story of a new age on the six page. We were on a quick rampage. All of it. I mean the wining and dining, drinking and driving afterwards, excessive buying. Overdosing on drugs, love, dreams, and our anger. Somewhere the lines got blurred I'm sure and sometimes it was a little lonely, but I needed someone to hold me and he did it so well in his expensive hotels."
"You mentioned earlier, if you don't feel like it was Stockholm Syndrome, then what was it?"
"It was love."
The documentary cuts to a video of you and Jason at dinner. You were staring at each other across the table. He held your hands in the center of the table and it was clear that the two of you were in your own little world in the restaurant. Your voice appeared over the video as you talked about your first impressions of Jason.
"And I remember when I met him. It was so clear that he was the only one for me, and we both knew right away. As the years went on, things got more difficult, we were faced with more challenges. At first I begged him to leave me alone, to try to remember the friendship we had in the beginning. He was charismatic, magnetic, electric and everybody knew him. When he walked in the room, every woman's head turned and everyone stood up to talk to him. He was like this hybrid, this mix, of a man who couldn't contain himself."
Your head tilted slightly and you paused.
"I always got the sense that he became, torn, between being a good person and missing out on all of the opportunities that life could offer a man as magnificent as him. And in that way, I, understood him. And I loved him. I loved him, I loved him, I loved him. And I still love him."
"The relationship of Jason Todd and Y/n L/n was unique. She brought out the best in him in the worst way. Jason Todd was executed on Death Row on April 27th. Y/n was executed a short week afterwards thereby ending the couple's reign of terror."
"I love him."

the cedric diggory f1 driver au that nobody asked for but i wrote anyways
Tumblr media
all of this started because i was watching goblet of fire and noticed that both renault and hufflepuff share a color scheme
and then i thought that robert pattinson would look very very hot in a race suit
more chaos dedicated to the harbinger of chaos, anj herself (@libraryofloveletters )
in this scenario, the driver lineups are as follows:
ferrari: harry potter, oliver wood, red bull: draco malfoy, blaise zabini haas: fred & george weasley, renault: cedric diggory, zacharias smith
hes lead driver at renault, has been there for two years now
by all accounts, he's a very good driver, especially being as young as he is
but he's still chasing that elusive race win, he just hasn't been able to push the renault far enough
god he looks incredible climbing out of the car, balaclava lines on his face, hair mussed and drenched in sweat
cedric is a humble king always praising his fellow drivers, including ferrari rookie (and his former teammate) harry potter
"yeah, i mean, the pace was there but at the end of the day, it's hard to beat the ferraris. hats off to harry for that one, he really smashed it today, the win was well deserved."
a little wink at the camera, towel around his neck before he backs away with his press officer at his side
he's basically pierre gasly on steroids
the f1 ladies man
literally has fangirls falling over each other to try and get his autograph or a picture with him at signings
he's not the life of the party, leaves that to the weasley twins (they drive for haas, they need SOMETHING to celebrate)
instead he can be found in the back, talking and laughing with the mechanics and the engineers
everybody in the paddock loves him
media darling, you can't tell me otherwise
he's england's sweetheart
the extra tight white fireproofs that show off EVERYTHING
it's silverstone, his home grand prix (although it's also the home grand prix for half of the grid at this point)
and he's feeling great about himself all weekend, cedric has a feeling that he might finally get his win that weekend
a crash in the first corner takes out one of the ferraris and a mercedes
he's not even sure how it happened but somehow he's up into second place with ten laps to go
"alright, ced, the gap between you and blaise is 0.45 seconds, malfoy is almost one second behind. if you can hang on until the drs zone, i think we stand a chance at winning the whole damn thing."
"and diggory has drs! the renault goes down the inside of the red bull of blaise zabini, and he's done it! cedric diggory is leading the british grand prix!"
and the crowd goes MENTAL
"it worked!" cedric screams over the radio. "we're leading the bloody race!"
i imagine that he'd talk a little like george russell on the radio
and when he finally gets to stand on that podium, with the british national anthem pouring out of the speakers as he stands on the top step
hefting the trophy above his head before they're given the all clear to pop the champagne bottles open
god that man would so pretty covered from head to toe in champagne.
a cheeky grin throughout the post race interviews
gets to the cool down room and slumps down in his chair, still in shock over the entire thing as he looks at the little pirelli baseball cap, the british flag and 1st place embroidered on the side.
his girlfriend there in a little yellow sundress filming the podium celebrations
cedric goes over to the blacony above parc ferme (i think that's what it's called? or maybe parc ferme is just where the cars go after a race?) and pours the champagne on her when she's not looking
champagne kisses after the podium celebrations, the paparazzi are swarming and he's holding the trophy in front of their faces for privacy
celebrating afterwards with him you ask???
SPICY CONTENT INCOMING!
a full dinner with the whole team to thank them for their efforts
he's wearing jeans and a white button down shirt, a little cord necklace resting under his collarbone
they're back in the hotel, music playing softly in the background
sharing a bottle of wine and dancing in the candlelight
turns into hot sex
but cedric, despite now having a race win under his belt, still devotes the entire night to pleasing his girlfriend
holding her hand at all times, even when it gets a little rougher by their standards
which it always does during a race weekend when he lands a podium
scratches all down his back
shes on her stomach, one hand behind her back to grasp his hand as he fucks her from behind
calling him 'my race winner' the entire time because it inflates his ego (and turns him on)
endless cuddles afterwards (hes the big spoon, draping his body over hers as he thanks her for being there to support his career, being there for him during every up and down in his career

2017 VoicePlay winter activities — ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
With a new year came new projects and collaborators, as well as several personal milestones for the guys.
.
Auld Lang Syne
VoicePlay started the year on someting of a bittersweet note, finally making the offical announcement of Tony's retirement from the group. Fans had been remarking on his increasing absences from VoicePlay's content and concerts over the preceding year, so the formal confirmation that he had left was sad, but certainly less upsetting in knowing that it was an amicable decision.
youtube
Five years of frequent, extended travel had taken their toll. Tony wanted to spend more time at home with his family, and refocus his creative energies on new projects through PattyCake Productions, the studio he and Layne had been building over the previous year.
.
On a happier note, Eli and Ashley entered the home stretch in preparing for their wedding.
Tumblr media
.
Hot and cold
As they said in the audition video, the remaining guys didn't let a vacancy disrupt their other plans. They continued to alternate between Erik Winger and J.None as their stand-in baritones as they hit the road almost immediately.
First they picked up Winger and headed south for a stylish wedding in the Florida Keys.
Tumblr media
Then they scooped up J.None and returned to snowy NYC for the annual APAP conference after skipping it the year before.
instagram
Tumblr media
.
Once they got home, it was time for some more rehearsals before they performed at a couple local private events and filmed their next video.
youtube
This song wasn't fast enough already, guys? Yeesh!
.
Jacobson nuptials
And of course everyone gathered to celebrate at Eli and Ashley's wedding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
From the road to the air
Toward the end of the month, Layne and Tony gathered up a few family members and friends and headed to southern Florida for their next PattyCake project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When they got home, VoicePlay snagged J.None again and flew out west to "crash Eli's honeymoon" and headline the annual Napa Valley A Cappella Extravaganza.
.
Part of the extended family
During their week at home between road dates, Earl got to meet Jodi Benson, voice of the animated Ariel, during a Nemo post-show meet and greet session.
Tumblr media
.
Round and round
The next weekend, the guys and Winger headed up to New Jersey for a show in Rahway with opening act Garden State Sound Quartet. The concert received some preliminary hype in the local press, and a very nice recap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

.
Then they popped home long enough to pick up J.None and Max Herskovitz for a five day trip to the Bahamas aboard the Disney Dream. While the other guys were at sea, Layne got into some tech geekery for an interview with Lens Depot as part of their customer spotlight series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once they disembarked, they bade farewell to Max and scooped up Layne for a quick jaunt to Maryland.
.
Making a name
After a few quiet days at home, they met up with Winger again to sing the national anthem as the opening to Full Sail University's annual alumni Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During a shopping trip the next day, Layne found a hat with surprisingly accurate embroidery. He joked that it "should have a question mark at the end", and his sister noted that a needle and thread could easily amend it. I'd argue that, like a lot of performing artists, they're more "situationally famous".
.
Frozen treats
The weekend took VoicePlay (again with Winger) north to St. Joseph, MN for a show attended by several longtime fans and local gent Chris Rupp.
Tumblr media
sleepy Layne, Paul, and Erik heading north very early in the morning
Tumblr media
.
Home time
Over next week, Layne, Tony, and Earl were busy filming PattyCake's next project, "Beauty and the Bieber", at several locations around Orlando. Meanwhile, Geoff and Kathy took advantage of the slight lull in their schedules and had a babymoon date night at a Take 6 / Manhattan Transfer concert.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, of course, the VoicePlay momentum picked up again at their weekly planning meeting.
.
Ahoy-hoy
The week after that, they gathered up J.None and Max again for another loop around the Caribbean on the Disney Dream.
Tumblr media
.
When they got home, they headed over to a local art school to perform at a fundraiser for their theater program. The lineup for the evening also included Brian Fortuna from Dancing with the Stars and Orshi Horvath, and a newly formed local boy band called the Beatline Boys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
instagram
VoicePlay accompany Brian and Orshi for a dance
.
Family time
The next few days were spent doing their own thing and marking some big milestones. Geoff and Kathy had their baby shower. Earl and Nick bought a new home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Back to work
The final weekend of the season was bookended by video shoots with new collaborators. Friday saw them team up with theme park pal Matthew Darren for a club jam mashup, while Monday brought a peppy breakup song with Broadway performer John Pinto, Jr.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Once those were in the can, it was time to hit the road again, but that's a story for a another time.

A Bulgarian tycoon under house arrest, Vassil “The Skull” Bojkov, on Thursday announced a new political project, the “Centre” party, standing in opposition to Bulgaria’s current ruling coalition.
“Bulgaria needs strong people with a sense of mission who can get the country out of its misery and lead it into the new world – something that those thieves can never do,” Bojkov said at the inauguration of the party in Sofia, attacking the current cabinet.
Party member Damyan Kachulski said the project comes at the right time geopolitically, with a “right-wing America, a strong Russia, a wise China, a reasonable Europe [and] a neighbouring strong Turkey” and it will seek the votes of “the silent majority”, referring to the low voter turnout in the 2021-2023 elections in Bulgaria.
Dessislava Kovacheva, film producer and screenwriter of history-themed features, said the party stood against “anti-Bulgarian propaganda”, aims to attract “those who shiver when they hear the national anthem” and will deal with “the traitors who we know by name”.
Bojkov attended the launch event despite being under house arrest following his return to Bulgaria last August after a period of exile in Dubai where he relocated to evade various charges. They included being a leader of an organised crime group, wrongfully obtaining cultural and historical riches, murder threats and orchestrating assassinations.
Since the 1990s, Bojkov has been associated with profitable businesses as well as alleged political influence and ties to organised crime. He started a chain of currency exchange offices and then expanded into the gambling industry in the 1990s, as well as into road construction, football and art collecting.
The tables were turned in 2020, when his profitable lottery business was nationalised. He then became a vocal critic of ex-PM Boyko Borissov and his GERB party, as well as their partners from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms. This was a major change in attitude: before his clashes with the GERB-led cabinet in 2020, Bojkovv had shied away from media attention or comments on political events.
In Dubai, he started a party called Bulgarian Rise, which is now defunct and replaced by his new opposition project.
Both Bojkov and his foes from GERB and Movement for Rights and Freedoms found themselves designated by the Global Magnitsky Act in 2021.
Several tycoons of his generation who amassed wealth and influence in the 1990s have been assassinated in recent years, triggering speculation about a tectonic change in Bulgaria’s criminal underground.
In May last year, Krassimir “Kyro” Kamenov and his wife were shot dead in Cape Town, South Africa. Last August, just before Bojkov’s return, business figure Alexei Petrov was assassinated in Sofia. In an interview in September, Bojkov denied having any major ties to Petrov and Kamenov.
The announcement of the new party comes when relations between the two blocs in Bulgaria’s ruling coalition are tense after just less than a year of rule. The planned rotation of Prime Ministers in March, which is now turning into a fight for power between GERB/UDF and We Continue the Change / Democratic Bulgaria, risks the stability of the cabinet.
“We don’t want another snap election but we won’t allow our alliance to be a cover-up for diverting the coalition’s main priorities,” PM Nikolai Denkov of We Continue the Change said on Thursday. He will file his resignation on March 6 to make way for GERB’s Mariya Gabriel.
On Monday, Denkov met Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

On Ronit Roy's dark time, Rohit Roy “It was a volatile phase for him because there was no work”
With Kasauti Zindagi Kay, Ronit Roy's career was given a new lease on life.
Since more than three decades ago, Ronit Roy has acted frequently in both films and television. The actor has established a niche for himself and, most significantly, has avoided becoming stereotypical in any one role. But there was once a time in his career when he was going through a dark and dismal period. Rohit Roy, an actor and Ronit's brother, talked about this experience the former had.
Tumblr media
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Rohit disclosed, "The phase that he (Ronit) was going through, it was just me with him, there was no one else. It was a very volatile phase for him. It was volatile because there was no work. Industry had rejected him. His friends would tell me ‘Rohit, you are a star on TV, but your brother won’t make it"
After making his feature debut with Bank Robbery, Ronit went on to become well-known in 1992 with the love romance Jaan Tere Naam. Back then, "Akkha India Jaanta Hai," the movie's smash hit song, had also become a national anthem. But after a few more films, Ronit's success vanished. But the popular TV programmes Kasauti Zindagi Kay and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi gave his career a boost.
Although Rohit is his younger brother, at that time he had to act as his older brother. Then Rohit said, "I was his older brother. People who see him now don’t remember that phase. Because his film audience… They went away with the film. The viewers he gained after Kasautii, they don’t know about his struggle. For them, Ronit Roy is Rishabh Bajaj (his character from Kasauti Zindagi Kay).”
In the 2017 film Kaabil, which starred Hrithik Roshan, Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy shared the screen. It's interesting to note that both brothers had bad roles in the film.

Complex, August 2014
Lana Del Rey knows what you think about her. And she’s learned to live with it.
Satin gowns, fast cars, pills, and parties are the lifeblood of American glamour. Red carpets, unbridled opulence, and the kind of elegance that looks amazing in high-contrast black-and-white photographs are its marrow. Icons like Sinatra, the Kennedys, Elvis, and Marilyn Monroe appeared to be beacons of the good life, but behind the velvet rope was a darker, less-than-pristine reality: one rife with gossip, addiction, betrayal, and violence. In 2014, no artist embraces both that world’s intoxicating glow and frayed seams more acutely than Lana Del Rey.
On her 2012 breakthrough, Born to Die, Del Rey cast herself as a tragic pop star from a bygone era. Her music videos were epics: on Born to Die’s title track, she begins perched regally on a throne flanked by Bengal tigers, and ends with model Bradley Soileau carrying her bloody body from the fiery wreckage of a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1; in “National Anthem,” she plays Jackie O to A$AP Rocky’s JFK. Where many of her contemporaries reveled in little-known subcultures and outsider artists, Del Rey went for icons. “Marilyn’s my mother/Elvis is my daddy/Jesus is my bestest friend,” she wrote in the introduction to her Anthony Mandler-directed short film Tropico, released last year. Del Rey’s 20th Century nostalgia (cloaked in beats provided by Emile Haynie, Kid Cudi’s original producer, and Kanye West-collaborator Jeff Bhasker, among others) proved immensely successful. Only four albums released in 2012 outsold Born to Die, which went platinum in the U.S. and charted in 11 countries. Del Rey sold more than 12 million singles globally, received two Grammy nods (Best Pop Vocal Album, for her EP Paradise; Best Song Written for Visual Media, for “Young and Beautiful”), and sold out a North American tour.
Her arrival also attracted visceral criticism. The New York Times review of Born to Die savaged her aesthetic and artistic “pose.” Pitchfork likened her debut to a “faked orgasm.” The media seemed fixated on anything but the album’s actual music: the supposedly incongruous early recording career under her real name, the life cycle of the internet hype machine that birthed her, or the aggressively ridiculed Saturday Night Live performance that made her a household name.
In 2012, Del Rey moved from Brooklyn to L.A., and one year later began work on the full-length follow-up to Born to Die. Released in June and produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, Ultraviolence eschews the home-run pop melodies of Born to Die for stripped-down piano intros and reverb-heavy guitar solos that give her soulful, low-register vocals space to shine. Lyrically, though, Del Rey’s stance remains uncompromising, with titles like “Money, Power, Glory” and “Fucked My Way Up to the Top” explicitly referencing her image, and taking aim at her myriad detractors. And some of her old critics have changed their tune. In its review, the New York Times called the criticisms levelled against Born to Die “inaccurate,” and lauded Del Rey’s “retro sophistication” and “guileless candor;” Pitchfork called her “a pop music original,” adding “there are not nearly enough of those around.” Despite modest radio play for the lead single “West Coast,” the album debuted No. 1 on Billboard, selling 182,000 copies in its first week (more than twice as many as Born to Die), a testament to her growing fanbase.
Sitting on the roof of Brooklyn’s Wythe Hotel for our interview, the 27-year-old “pop star” is dressed more like a suburban teenager, in light wash low-rise jeans and a tight, white, short-sleeved polo with lavender horizontal stripes. She has perfect posture and crosses her legs neatly. There’s a grace to the way she chain-smokes Parliaments and says “fuck” when she chips one of her pointed purple acrylic nails. If it’s all a show, well, it’s a good one. The cracks in the veneer of glamour humanize her and are one of the reasons she’s been able to mix self-serious writing about true love and death with provocative, pseudo-comical lines like the infamous “My pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola.”
For the next 60 minutes, Del Rey muses about sexual gamesmanship in the music industry, Marilyn, Elvis, and Jesus, and the jagged reaction to her emergence on the pop scene. And words. Del Rey is a writer—not just the subject, but also the director of her own drama. The only mark of her wealth is a gaudy diamond-encrusted choker with a cross pendant hanging just above her sternum. Its sparkle evokes the cartoonish shine of costume jewelry, though it’s every bit as real as she has turned out to be.
When you’re writing, what comes first? Song titles, melodies, music?
Well it took me a long time to write the album as it’s listed. I was writing a lot since the last record came out, but for some reason, 70% of what I was writing didn’t feel right for me. So if I’m lucky enough to have an experience that really impacts me, it comes with a verse and a melody. From there I ad lib it. But they come together, the melody and the words come together. But it happens rarely for me.
What do you mean?
Actually having that happen, where it just sort of comes. I remember with “Carmen,” I was out really late and walking to the tempo of my own rhythm, and then I just started singing, “Carmen, Carmen doesn’t have a problem lying to herself cause her liquor’s top shelf.” And it was an easy cadence. The whole thing just came, and I think I was in a really good place then, so it was like things...it was really easy to channel.
What defines being in a good place?
Feeling really happy and just circumstantially like nothing’s going wrong, which becomes more difficult but that’s only my experience. I think a lot of people think the whole thing is really great. Making Brooklyn my home base for the last two and a half weeks has really helped me out, like I’ve actually started thinking conceptually that I have this addition, an addition to this record that could come really easily. That hasn't happened in a long time. Not since I wrote that Paradise addition to Born to Die, which I really loved.
Did you miss Brooklyn?
I missed Brooklyn. I missed the people.
How are the people here different?
They’re not different. I’m a little different. The vibe is the same. I met some guys from here last week I had never met before, and they were just really easygoing. All artist types—writing during the day and hanging out at bars at night. I miss that, I like that. I haven't really found that in California yet. I relocated there because my record got a little bit bigger, but I didn’t really find a music scene that I was a part of. There was something happening—there was kind of a reemerging Laurel Canyon sound. Jonathan Wilson, Father John Misty, and I really liked those guys. I felt like maybe I had something in common with them and I slipped right into that atmosphere really well.
Let’s talk Ultraviolence. The crop of the photo on the album cover is similar to the crop of your first two album covers.
I liked that, I wanted the continuity. I didn’t have that for the album cover at the time and I wanted it to be a continuation of the story. I did like the idea of it being in black and white so that there was, literally and figuratively more to be revealed. Even color-wise.
You wanted a continuation in aesthetic for this album cover, is that something that was important to you musically for Ultraviolence as well?
Yeah. Not being misleading in terms of your personal aesthetic, like your psyche coming through design-wise and musically—I like continuity.
You have this way of exacting your creative vision through so many different parts of your art—music videos, lyrics, tone and the melody, style of dress. Are those things that you plan ahead when you think about an album? Is it a concept that grows from one idea?
I don’t know. I was in college at Fordham when I was 18. I was living between Brooklyn and New Jersey and I was working with this guy who was more famous than anyone I had met at the time, this producer David Kahne. I had that record—you know they shelved it for two years—and I had all this time to think about what was really important to me and what I actually wanted to do if I had the opportunity to do what I wanted. I knew that I wanted to make life easy for myself in the way that I would always be living in a world I constructed and whatever felt true to me, regardless of however that appeared to other people. That definitely extended to song titles, whether I shot in black and white, hair color, things like that. It’s not really something that I planned ahead. I had a sense that I wanted the world I lived in to be really personalized to what I liked.
When I hear the words “ultra” and “violence,” I think about WorldStarHipHop. What does the phrase mean to you?
That’s funny. I feel connected to two emotions—aggression and softness. I like that luxe sound of the word “ultra” and the mean sound of the word “violence” together. I like that two worlds can live in one.
What’s the relationship between violence and love?
I like a physical love. I like a hands-on love. [Pauses.] How can I say this without getting into too much trouble? I like a tangible, passionate love. For me, if it isn’t physical, I’m not interested. Everything I do feels so organized: touring, playing a show night after night with a couple months in between to make a record, and being in charge of all of it—mixing, mastering. Sometimes I meet people with a lot of fire and energy. Mentally, maybe we’re not that similar. Telepathically, we’re not on that same wavelength. If there’s a physicality and a chemistry, that ends up winning for me every time because it’s the opposite of what I have every day.
Who’s the last person you met who made you feel like that?
Dan Auerbach, for better or for worse.
Do you think a “guilty pleasure” is a real thing?
Yes, but I don’t have many of them musically. I have tons of them in life.
Do tell.
Well, smoking is one of them. Sugar, coffee. I must have 13 cups a day. It’s a shame about the health consequences because a lot of great things happen over coffee and a cigarette. A lot of great songs were written.
Why did you choose to cover Nina Simone’s “The Other Woman” on Ultraviolence?
[Sings, “The other woman has time to manicure her nails, the other woman is perfect where her rival fails.”] I relate to being the person who people come to for “such a change from the old routine,” but not being the main thing. I had a long-term relationship for seven years with someone who was the head of a label and I felt like I was that change of routine. I was always waiting to become the person who his kids came home to, and it never happened. Obviously I had to seek other relationships, and I felt like that became a pattern. I was younger—24, 25 at the time. I had known what I wanted to do for a long time. I had been serious about music since high school, and I stopped drinking when I was 18. By 24, I was a pretty serious person. I thought I was a writer, and I was a singer. I thought I knew what I wanted my path to be. The people I was drawn to were already established, but they were probably looking for someone more on their level, age-wise. But I love the idea of wrapping up the record with a reference.
Many artists use obscure references to try to prove individuality and originality. Why do you go for icons like Marilyn, Elvis, and Jesus?
When I had put out only “Blue Jeans” and “Video Games,” I caught a lot of grief from journalists asking me why I was being so literal and obvious. I referenced things like Marilyn without trying to be accessible. I have a personal relationship with my perception of who Marilyn was. She was the kind of female who was really warm and giving. I like that type of girl who’s friendly and easy. I was always looking for girls like that as friends. I felt like I knew her in that way. And Jesus—I mean, being raised Catholic, it was just a way of life. Spirituality and religion were strong. I was in Catholic school until I was 13. Like a lot of other people, I think foundationally I was hymn inspired—musical hymns, not Him, Jesus. [Laughs.]
How did you meet Dan?
I met Dan at The Riviera strip club in Queens. He was with Tom Elmhirst, who’s an amazing mixer, and I was with Emile Haynie. Emile asked if I wanted to go hang out with them and I had a lot of fun for the first time in a long time. Dan had been mixing Ray Lamontagne’s record with Tom down at Electric Lady studios. And he left by the time I was there—Lee Foster gave me Electric Lady all by myself for three weeks.
Wow.
It was incredible. By the end of the three weeks I thought I was done. Then I met Dan and he said, “Why don’t we just go to Nashville and see what happens?” I went because it sounded like a good time. I didn’t want the party to end. I flew there with Lee and we rented a farm for six weeks. We drove to Dan’s studio on 8th Street every day and I loved it. He was what I was looking for, because he was a facilitator. He said “yes” a lot. If I was like, “I only want to sing this through once,” that was normal to him. It was natural that someone would like what they got on the first try. He was cool like that. [Lights a Parliament with her plastic purple lighter.]
You’ve been smoking cigarettes on stage a lot.
Dude, I have to. I can’t get through it.
Is it an addiction?
Yeah. I’m a chain-smoker.
How long have you been smoking?
Since I was 17. It’s crazy. That’s why I try to play mostly outdoor festivals. [Laughs.] Because 45 minutes into the set, when you’ve still got 45 more minutes to go, you need to smoke.
That’s a long time to be standing in front of people.
It’s a long time. If people come and see you at a show for 80 minutes they literally know everything about you. With 5,000 people coming, they film you so the people in the back can see you on the screens. There isn’t a moment when you can turn around and gather yourself. Everything you feel, everything you’re emoting, is just there. I have toured so much more than I thought I would; I thought I would be more of a studio singer. But I toured Europe for two years.
There was a time after Paradise came out when you said you weren’t sure that you were going to make any more music. What changed?
A year after Born to Die was released, a lot of people asked me what the new record would sound like and when it was going to come out. I said, “I don’t know if there will be another record.” I didn’t have songs that I felt were good or personal enough. Dan Auerbach changed things for me, and I have no idea why. He was just interested in me. That made me feel like maybe what I was doing was interesting. He gave me some confidence back. He listened to songs that were folk songs at the time, and he thought that maybe, with some revision, they could be more dynamic. I started to see a bigger picture. For me, if I don’t have a concept it’s not worth writing a whole album. I don’t like it if there’s no story.
There are a few different ways to take your song “Fucked My Way Up to the Top.” Is it about people not wanting to give you credit for your success? Or is it about fucking people to get to the top?
It’s commentary, like, “I know what you think of me,” and I’m alluding to that. You know, I have slept with a lot of guys in the industry, but none of them helped me get my record deals. Which is annoying.
What’s the worst relationship advice you’ve received?
That love doesn’t come easily and that relationships are supposed to be a struggle. Everything else is so hard; hopefully love is the one thing that is actually fun.
That reminds me of an Eartha Kitt interview clip you once posted. Asked about love and compromise, she says, “What is there to compromise? I fall in love with myself and I want someone to share it with me.”
She was so right-on with that. It’s nice to have a fiery relationship that enhances everything you do, that doesn’t feel like part of it is not what you want.
What is the most valuable thing that you’ve destroyed in life?
In terms of money?
It doesn’t have to be, but that works.
I don’t know. I don’t think money has had an influence on things I’ve sabotaged. But there are things.
What’s something you’ve destroyed that’s actually valuable to you?
Probably the relationship I’ve been in for the last three years. Definitely demolished that through tons of depression and insecurity. Now it’s just an untenable relationship, impossible because of my emotional instability.
Sometimes people do their best writing when fucked up.
And I am a little fucked up. This whole experience has fucked me up.
Fucked you up how?
I don’t know. It’s been hard. I was in a good place when I wrote my first record because I wrote it for fun, but then, I felt like everything that went with the record was heavy. I was also trying to deal with stuff with my family. The world was heavy for a couple years. That’s why I liked Dan: He was casual. It didn’t have to be so serious.
Speaking of non-serious, what restaurant has the best red sauce in the world?
That’s a good question. I go to the same place in Los Angeles all the time, Ago on Melrose. I order the same thing every time, penne alla vodka.
What were you listening to when you were writing?
I love jazz. I love Chet Baker’s documentary Let’s Get Lost, which influenced my video for “West Coast,” which Bruce Weber shot. I love Nina Simone and Billie Holiday like everybody else. I have a ’70s playlist that I listen to daily. A lot of Bob Seger, who I love. He’s probably the main person I listen to, and also the Eagles and Chris Isaak, Dennis Wilson and Brian Wilson. I like Echo and the Bunnymen, “Killing Moon”—just like single tracks.
Do you have a guilty pleasure song on that playlist?
No, they’re all pretty good.
You experienced a level of scrutiny that was very personal. How has that affected you?
The good thing about catching so much grief from critics is that you literally do not fucking care. It put me in a mind frame where I expect things not to go right, because they generally don’t. But it’s not a pessimistic place. The music is always good, in my opinion. That’s what I expect now from my career, that the music is going to be great and the reaction’s going to be fucked up.
Why do you think they reacted so vehemently to what you were making?
If they thought it was supposed to be categorized as pop music, that was the first mistake. It wasn’t made to be popular. It was more of a psychological music endeavor. I wasn’t out to make fun, verse-chorus-verse-chorus songs. I was unraveling my history through music. People were confused as to why I would stand on stage and just sing and not perform. To me, performing is just channeling and emoting through inflection, cadence, phrasing. That’s pretty different from what’s popular, so I think maybe they thought it shouldn’t be popular. What do you think?
It felt like you were being critiqued not as an artist or even a pop musician, but as a celebutante. You presented such a comprehensive, seemingly calculated project—the videos, the styling, the references, etc.—that people felt compelled to pick it apart.
It’s funny, because my process was natural. I remember making “Video Games,” and I did my makeup as I did it every day. I put my hair up like I did. I was wearing a dress and filming myself. I didn’t think that the juxtaposition with this found footage that I had taken from people’s honeymoons on Super 8 would get the reaction it did. The reaction to everything six years prior to that, from the day when YouTube was actually born, was a non-reaction. People just didn’t care.
Do you feel vindicated?
I feel a sense of relief, but I don’t feel vindicated.
How come?
I don’t feel like things have gone well. It’s not the way I would have chosen them to go. So it’s not like I feel everything’s turned around and it’s great.
You’ve got quite a few gold records, and a handful of platinum ones.
Yeah, but I still didn’t find that community of people I was looking for, like the way Bob Dylan found his friends, or the respect of being a writer. Because that gold and platinum stuff, it doesn’t mean as much if you’re walking down the street and you can hear people saying things about you. That doesn’t even out.

Outtakes
Lana Del Rey’s third album, Honeymoon, is out today, just 15 months after her sophomore release, Ultraviolence, solidified her place in iconic American history. This past year she has proven her staying power both as one of the most beloved pop singers in the world, and one of its most candid speakers. When she talks to the press, an activity that is becoming increasingly rare, she seems to inevitably ignite conversation. Notable examples this past year include her comments about dying young and being disinterested in feminism—both of which Kim Gordon responded to with some choice words in her memoir—as well as meeting inventor/mogul/future-enthusiast Elon Musk.
When I interviewed her for the cover of Complex’s August/September 2014 Issue, we touched on the media. But Lana was less concerned with the chatter, and more concerned with finding a group of collaborators who respect her artistry and perspective as a writer, “like the way Bob Dylan found his friends.” From the outside, it looks like she is closer than she’s ever been, working with her sister, photographer Chuck Grant, for the Honeymoon promo art, teaming up with “Shades of Cool” director Jake Nava for the literally explosive “High by the Beach” music video, contributing to the debut solo album of close friend Emile Haynie, who executive produced Born to Die, and finding new artistic synergies with artists like the Weeknd.
The more we learn about Lana, the more complete a portrait of a living, breathing human being we are able to piece together. In celebration of the release of her third album, we revisit some of the unpublished quotes from our interview that took place May 12, 2014, on the roof of Brooklyn’s Wythe Hotel. Read them below.
On Doing “Ride” With Rick Rubin
I was writing that Paradise edition, and originally was writing it as a follow-up record, but nobody wanted to release something eight months later. It ended up being a re-release-slash-second edition, and I loved this demo I did with Justin Parker, who I wrote a lot of things with like “Video Games” and “Born to Die,” “National Anthem,” and Ferdy Unger-Hamilton at EMI hated the song. So I think him and Rick had been talking and Rick was like, “What’s going on with Lana? Can she come over, I hear she’s in L.A.” I think I had been over to say “Hi” to him first. Just to say “hi.” We took a walk in Santa Monica—he takes the same walking route every morning. Then a few weeks later I brought him “Ride,” and he really liked it. Working with him was good, I was still in my old car, my old Mercedes that was barely making it down that hour-and-a-half drive down to Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, and it was really good. He has this sprawling lawn with all these bunnies and palm trees. He was very relaxed. It was good.
On Being a Fan of Rufus Wainwright
I love him. I had this terrible experience with Rufus Wainwright actually. I was like, a long time fan of him and his sister. It’s actually why I signed with my initial label, 5 Points Records, because the boss there, David, was great friends with Loudon, their father. I thought that was amazing. Anyways, I had been waiting to meet him for a long time, and I was singing at the Montreux Jazz Festival, I think two years ago. I had a really bad show. I couldn’t hear anything on stage because my in-ears stopped working. I was having a moment backstage and Rufus came to say “Hi,” and I was trying to compliment him in between stifled sobs. I think he thought I was insane.
On Being a Fan of Martha Wainwright
She’s one of the few females I totally relate to. I love the way she uses her voice in a way that kind of explains things. The words aren’t the only things that tell a story, it’s her inflections too. That’s why I really like Cat Power. She’s my biggest female inspiration in a way. I signed with my first manager because he was managing Martha six years ago, Peter Leak, and I always hoped I’d meet her. Hers was one of the few shows I saw at the Bowery Ballroom.
On the Most Important Person She Ever Shared a Cigarette With
Probably my manager, who is still my manager, Ben Mawson, over the last four years. He doesn’t smoke anymore, but he used to smoke more than me and drink 12 beers a day. I met him, he told me to just come to London and I did. I just went and met him. I think they were at Shoreditch House, so we went on the roof and had a cigarette. He felt like I was really worried about everything, and he told me that he had a plan and that everything was going to go OK and not to worry. He was very aggressive, and he was such a believer. So probably with Ben, I guess.
On Making Art Vs. Satisfying the Major Label Machine
I came in in a unique position in that “Video Games” had so many views, and that was the reason why Jimmy Iovine at Interscope and Ferdy Unger-Hamilton at Polydor had called me on that day and wanted to revisit the record and hear it again.
So I got signed on great terms because the discussions we were having were that it was always going to be my way. I liked coming from this DIY place where if I had a single that they really felt like they wanted to put money behind or promote—I liked knowing it was an option that I could make my own video at home for it, like I did with “Video Games.” Eventually I tired of that, graduated to working with other people. But in that way I was in a really good place after the record was done with its cycle.
I think the label was half-and-half on this record [Ultraviolence] because there were a lot of jazz undertones and West Coast references. I think they were happy that I was happy with it and that I made it. I don’t think they felt like there were singles that could work at radio. And I kind of felt that, because I have such a good relationship with Jimmy and Ferdy. I’ve been working, “working” [makes air quotes], singing, for years. So the people I’m closest with are like my product manager and the video commissioner, because they’re really good girls. The A&R guys—Larry Jackson and John, if I go out at night I probably go out with them. We’re pretty flexible with each other, but it always come down to differences. For example, the bonus tracks on this record I didn’t feel like had any relation to the atmosphere of the record itself. I think iTunes was like, “You would have trouble promoting a record if it didn’t have a deluxe edition,” so, there’s stuff like that.
On the Worst Relationship Advice She Ever Received
That love doesn’t come easily and that relationships are supposed to be a struggle. I think that everything else is so hard that hopefully love is the one thing that actually is the fun part of it. [I] have had some very practical, down-to-earth advice about love that I choose not to follow. It’s the same with money too. You’re supposed to work your whole life, work really hard for everything you get. I think maybe a better strategy is to just fall in love with what you do and hope that whatever you make from that monetarily is enough to have an easy life.

Dr. Phil Launches New Cable Channel With Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony in Fort Worth
Tumblr media
Merit Street Media's unveiling included TV royalty like Steve Harvey and conservative politicians such as Lt. Governor Dan Patrick.
"Dr. Phil" McGraw is bringing his show to Fort Worth. If you get on the waiting list now, this could be your view before too long.
Merit Street Media, a new multi-platform media network from “Dr. Phil” McGraw, was launched on Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at McGraw’s new studio in Fort Worth.
In addition to hosting Dr. Phil Primetime, a revamped version of McGraw’s long-running talk show, Merit Street Media’s new cable station will host content from Steve Harvey, Nancy Grace and former Bachelor Nation host Chris Harrison.
All three were in attendance at the ribbon-cutting, along with Robin McGraw (Dr. Phil’s wife and collaborator), the anchors for Merit Street’s upcoming morning and nightly news programs and a slew of “special guests": journalists, social media influencers and all 200 Merit Street staff members.
The “special guests” did not include Mark Cuban, although it appeared that they were expecting him at one point.
A guest sitting next to us who RSVP’d at the last minute was given a nametag meant for Cuban with their name scribbled on the back.
The new studio for Dr. Phil Primetime is at Merit Street Media headquarters in Fort Worth.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place in Dr. Phil's studio, a surreal moment for anyone who has ever tuned into his show.
Guests were told that the event would begin at 11 a.m., but it started 25 minutes late.
It’s unclear why, as we heard McGraw’s helicopter land an hour earlier. (According to a staff member, McGraw takes a helicopter to the studio every day.)
At 11.25 a.m., the ceremony opened with a prayer, setting the tone for McGraw’s mission right off the bat.
The prayer called upon God to bless the studio in every aspect.
This included, and the preacher explicitly clarified this, “financially.”
The prayer was followed by directions to stand, as Jennifer Chung Quintard of the Fort Worth Opera performed “God Bless America.”
Quintard is a talented vocalist, but as we looked around and saw some attendees with their hats removed and their hands on their hearts, we were distracted by the fact that “God Bless America” is not our country’s national anthem and curious as to why we had to stand for it.
After Quintard’s performance, we sat back down to watch a sizzle reel for Merit Street’s content.
The network’s morning news show, called Morning on Merit Street, will be hosted by Dominique Sachse and Fanchon Stinger.
The show was described as mixing news and lifestyle content to present information in a more entertaining way.
Dr. Phil and Steve Harvey embrace while State Senator Tan Parker watches.
The News on Merit Street, the nightly news program, will focus on “not just the what, but the why.”
The show will be anchored by Loni Coombs, Kris Gutierrez and Lyndsey Keith.
The sizzle reel boasted that Merit Street Media would be the exclusive home of Steve Harvey and Nancy Grace’s programs.
It also promised that the Dr. Phil Primetime show would be more hard-hitting than its predecessor, teasing a segment where McGraw visits the nation's southern border and conducts interviews with people he meets there.
State Senator Tan Parker and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick took the stage to pay their respects to what Patrick believes might be “the top film and television studio in the country.”
“Mark my words!” he insisted.
Patrick ended his remarks with a message to McGraw and Merit Street Media on behalf of all Texans: “We love God. We love family. We love country. We love you.”
(At this time, there is no word from Patrick on whether Texans also love lamp.)
Later, Robin McGraw took the stage for a rousing introduction of her husband, who, she claims is “brilliant.”
“Either run for president or build your own fabulous network,” McGraw says she has told her husband. “You have much more to say than an hour a day.”
After her speech, the back wall of the set opened up (just like on TV!) and the man of the hour, Dr. Phil himself, emerged to greet the crowd and share his vision for his new network.
Before the cutting, McGraw remarked that this is not a ribbon. We have to agree.
Carly May Gravley
“We’re going to talk about family," McGraw told the crowd. "We’re going to talk about core values. We’re going to talk about history and science and biology and all the things that make sense to how we got to be the country that everybody in the world wants to come to.”
These topics will apparently be presented by people with no professional experience or knowledge of them.
“This is not going to be some cable talking head expert show,” McGraw emphasized. “We’re gonna deal with these things through the eyes of the people that are impacted by them.”
As a reminder, “these things” include history and biology.
Before concluding his speech and cutting the ribbon, McGraw presented a statistic claiming that 80% of the content on Twitter is posted by 10% of its users. He used this information to support his contention that issues that receive the most airtime don’t actually matter to most people. click to enlarge Dr. Phil and his wife, Robin McGraw, chat onstage after the ribbon-cutting.
“They’re driving the narrative,” he said in that stern tone we’ve all heard him direct at guests on his show. “That’s got to stop, and we’re going to help stop it.”
In his speech, McGraw did not offer specifics as to what this narrative was.
However, the myriad of conservative guests, the staunch religious angle and perhaps even McGraw’s own history of alleged racist and abusive behavior shown by his previous tirades against COVID-19 precautions and transphobic rhetoric might help us fill in those blanks.
Merit Street Media is now airing on most cable providers and has a tool on its website to help you find your channel.
Fans of Dr. Phil Primetime can get on the waiting list on the show’s homepage to attend a taping for free.

Jordin Sparks Sings National Anthem for Disney Treasure Maiden Voyage
Tumblr media
Grammy-nominated singer Jordin Sparks brought her powerful vocals to the christening ceremony of the Disney Treasure cruise ship on March 1st, 2024. Sparks sang a stirring rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the highlight of the event, which marked the inaugural launch of Disney Cruise Line's newest ship from Port Canaveral." I'm thrilled to be here celebrating the maiden voyage of the Disney Treasure," said Sparks in an interview before her performance. "Disney has always held such a special place in my heart, so to be a part of this major milestone for them is an incredible honor." Sparks took the stage wearing a dazzling red ballgown, her hair swept elegantly to the side. As the first notes rang out across the ship's Grand Hall atrium, a hush fell over the crowd. Sparks' soulful vocals filled the space, imbuing the anthem with passion. Guests watched in awe as her voice soared to the climactic high note, holding it with flawless control. When the last note faded, the audience erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. Sparks beamed, blowing kisses to the crowd as red, white and blue confetti rained down. Disney executives hugged Sparks as she left the stage, congratulating her on a show-stopping performance."
Tumblr media
Jordin really captured the spirit of this special occasion," said Disney Cruise Line president Sharon Siskie. "Her voice is magnificent, and you could truly feel the emotion behind every word. It was the perfect way to usher in this incredible new ship." In addition to her musical talents, Sparks has a deep personal connection to Disney. She got her big break at age 17 winning the sixth season of American Idol, which aired on ABC, a network owned by Disney. Her self-titled debut studio album was released later that year on Jive Records, which was founded by Clive Davis and distributed by RCA Records, both subsidiaries of Sony Music Entertainment, which holds a stake in Disney Music Group." Disney has been intertwined with my career from the very start," Sparks explained. "They've always felt like family, so being part of the Disney Treasure launch makes me so happy."
Tumblr media
All About the Disney Treasure Cruise Ship The Disney Treasure is the sixth ship in Disney Cruise Line's fleet, joining the Disney Magic, Wonder, Dream and Fantasy, along with the recently launched Disney Wish. It continues the long legacy of Disney cruising that began back in 1998. At 1,119 feet long and 135 feet wide, the Disney Treasure has a similar size and capacity to the Disney Wish. It weighs in at a whopping 144,000 gross tonnage and has space for 1,555 crew members and 4,000 passengers across its 1,250 staterooms. That's enough room for plenty of magical Disney-themed fun across its 14 passenger decks." We're thrilled to welcome the Disney Treasure into our fleet," said Josh D'Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. "With features inspired by timeless Disney stories and the grandeur of faraway places, this wondrous ship is set to capture the hearts of guests of all ages."
Tumblr media
Grand Hall Atrium The magnificent three-deck-high Grand Hall atrium serves as the dazzling entrance to the Disney Treasure. Inspired by the mystery and richness of gilded palaces from Asia and Africa, it sets the tone for adventure across the ship. The space features opulent design touches like grand staircases, ornate carvings and sparkling chandeliers. The hall is anchored by a towering golden statue depicting Aladdin and Jasmine astride the Magic Carpet, ready to take flight. During the day, guests can enjoy live musical performances on the Grand Hall's stage, highlighting tunes from classic Disney films.
Tumblr media
Staterooms and Suites The Disney Treasure's 1,250 staterooms continue the overarching theme of adventure, with spaces inspired by timeless Disney and Pixar stories. Guests can choose from well-appointed standard rooms all the way up to expansive multi-room suites. Inside, outside or verandah staterooms offer dazzling details like custom artwork and subtle design nods to films like "Aladdin," "Pocahontas," "Luca" and "Up." Concierge guests have access to premium amenities and services in suites themed to "The Lion King," "The Jungle Book" and more. The grandest accommodations of all are the four opulent Royal Suites, two with "Jungle Book" theming and two inspired by "The Aristocats."
Tumblr media
Family Fun Disney Cruise Line is renowned for keeping every member of the family entertained, and the Disney Treasure delivers on that reputation. Little ones can let their creativity run wild at It's a Small World Nursery, Disney's Oceaneer Club and Disney's Oceaneer Lab. Tweens and teens have their own hangouts at Edge and Vibe. Parents can enjoy grownup time at Palo Steakhouse, Enchanté, The Rose lounge and more, while the whole family can come together at entertainment hot spots like the Walt Disney Theatre, Marceline Market buffet and Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods poolside eatery. Of course, no Disney cruise would be complete without beloved characters. On the Disney Treasure, guests can encounter Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and others across the ship's dining, activities and live shows.
Tumblr media
Thrills and Adventure In addition to stage shows and family fun, the Disney Treasure also delivers next-level thrills with attractions like the AquaMouse water coaster. This maritime marvel propels riders 760 feet through twisting tubes high above the ship's upper decks. The ride's story follows Mickey and Minnie on a treasure hunt through a mysterious temple, making it the perfect fit for this adventure-themed ship. For adult guests, there's no bigger thrill than exploring the ship's themed bars and lounges in the evening. Jungle Cruise-inspired Skipper Society serves up tropical drinks and snacks, while 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea-themed Periscope Pub offers undersea adventure vibes.Out on deck, the nightly Pirate's Rockin' Parlay Party invites guests to dance the night away under the stars. Live music, fireworks and Jack Sparrow himself make appearances during this high-energy deck party for all ages.
Tumblr media
Eastern and Western Caribbean Itineraries The Disney Treasure will sail 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral beginning December 21st, 2024. The weeklong vacations feature visits to tropical destinations like Grand Cayman, Cozumel, St. Thomas, Tortola and Castaway Cay, Disney's private island paradise. Eastern Caribbean sailings stop at Tortola, St. Thomas and Castaway Cay, while Western Caribbean itineraries visit Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Falmouth, Jamaica and Castaway Cay. Each cruise includes several days at sea to enjoy all the Disney Treasure has to offer." We can't wait for families to experience everything this magnificent ship has to offer," said Disney Cruise Line president Sharon Siskie. "With features inspired by exotic locales and thrilling tales of adventure, the Disney Treasure is truly one-of-a-kind."
Tumblr media
A Dazzling Dedication Ceremony In addition to Jordin Sparks' show-stopping national anthem performance, the Disney Treasure dedication ceremony included appearances by several Disney executives and creative minds involved with the ship's creation. Josh D'Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, welcomed the crowd and spoke about his excitement for Disney's cruise expansion. Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, also delivered remarks about carrying on Walt's legacy of innovation and storytelling. The event paid tribute to the artisans and engineers who brought the ship to life, including Walt Disney Imagineering and the skilled shipbuilders at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany." So much care and craftsmanship has gone into creating this incredible ship," D'Amaro said. "Seeing the Disney Treasure come to life has been amazing." Michael Colglazier and Sharon Siskie, President and SVP/GM of Disney Cruise Line, unveiled new details about features exclusive to the Disney Treasure. After the ceremony, attendees were among the first to explore the ship on special preview tours. The festivities concluded with a celebratory luncheon banquet in the ship's exquisite 1923 restaurant. Guests dined on gourmet dishes inspired by Walt Disney's early animation studio as the Disney Treasure set sail on its maiden voyage, the first of many magical journeys to come.
Tumblr media
Conclusion The launch of the Disney Treasure marks an exciting new chapter in Disney's cruising history. With her dazzling christening ceremony headlined by Jordin Sparks, this majestic ship is ready to embark on adventures across the Caribbean for years to come. From her lavish Asian and Middle Eastern-inspired Grand Hall to imaginative onboard attractions like AquaMouse, the Disney Treasure brings legendary Disney storytelling to life through enchanting spaces and entertainment.
