Karan Johar does not want his sexuality to be used as headlines: âWill just be ridiculed and reducedâ
Johar refrains from discussing his personal life openly. This decision stems from a desire to avoid being reduced to mere headlines and facing ridicule.
Filmmaker Karan Johar, recognized for incorporating queer narratives in mainstream cinema like Kapoor & Sons and anthology Bombay Talkies, chooses to remain discreet about his sexuality. Johar refrains from discussing his personal life openly. This decision stems from a desire to avoid being reduced to mere headlines and facing ridicule.
Speaking to The Week, Karan Johar said, âI donât want such a large part of my life to be used as a headline. I think thatâs what it will become, just a headline, and then the impact of all that I do will be lost.â
âI have never hidden who I am. Iâd rather do the work on ground level. I believe the impact of what I have done through my cinema, through the things I have said in my book (âAn Unsuitable Boyâ, 2017, co-written with journalist Poonam Saxena), has already touched people in a way where they were able to start conversations with their peers and parents. Iâve received so many letters and emails from people telling me the way I have addressed sexuality in my films has helped them address the situation with their parents. I feel the job has started, and it is ongoing. I will continue to push that envelope,â he explained.
âMe saying anything will just be sensational, it will just be ridiculed and reduced. But cinema is a far more impressionable medium,â the director of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani said.
Furthermore, he explained how Dharma Productions ensures to incorporate queer stories. He said âWe deal with sexuality in as dignified a way as possible. We believe in positive messaging and, as a company, we feel passionate about telling the stories that could make you awkward. Right from Geeli Pucchi in Ajeeb Dastaans to Kiara Advani having an orgasm to one of my songs in Lust Stories, we talk about womenâs right to sexual pleasure. We want to push boundaries.â
On the work front, Karan Johar last directed Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. It was released in July 2023.

Agastya Nanda recounts hilarious anecdote of him being mistaken as a delivery agent at filmmakerâs office; says, âThe disadvantages of not having social mediaâ
Agastya Nanda shared an anecdote of him being mistaken as a delivery agent.
Agastya Nanda, the grandson of Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, made his debut in the Netflix adaptation of the iconic comic series, The Archies. In a recent interview with Film Companion, Agastya shared insights into his journey as an actor, shedding light on the amusing and sometimes awkward experiences he encountered while seeking opportunities in the film industry.
The young actor shared that he had auditioned for the role in The Archies and has actively visited filmmakers at their offices in pursuit of more work. Being relatively unknown in film circles due to his absence from social media and growing up in Delhi away from the cinematic hubbub, Agastya shared some humorous instances of being mistaken for someone else.
Agastya recalled a moment where he visited a filmmaker's office and was misunderstood by the security guard. He narrated, âI had gone to another office where the security guard was like, âIdhar aa, idhar aa (come here).' He said, âNaam likh. Package delivery time bata. (Write down your name and the delivery time of the package).' I said I've not come here to deliver the package, I've come here to meet the director. Then he said, âNahi nahi, jhooth mat bol (No, don't lie).' This happens quite a lot. The disadvantages of not having social media.â
The actor also shared another incident where he was made to wait for 45 minutes at a filmmaker's office, only to overhear the staff discussing why he had not arrived yet. Agastya had to clarify his identity and explain that he had been patiently waiting for close to an hour.
Agastya recently joined social media, making his debut on Instagram on January 11. Talking about his previous film, The Archies was also starred Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Vedang Raina, Aditi Saigal and Yuvraj Menda. He will be next seen in Ikkis by Sriram Raghavan.

Decoding Ira Khanâs red-gold reception outfit with Monali Roy: 7 Months, 300 hours and more
Ira Khan, daughter of renowned actor Aamir Khan, celebrated her wedding reception on January 13 at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai.
The wedding of Aamir Khan's daughter Ira Khan and fitness trainer Nupur Shikhare continues to captivate, with the stunning red and gold lehenga worn by Ira at her reception, stealing the spotlight. This intricate piece, a collaboration between Ira and Sereia Design Studio by Monali Roy, wasn't just a stunning choice, it was a labour of love seven months in the making.
Ira's lehenga embraced traditional elements with a contemporary twist. The heavily embellished lehenga, paired with a modern blouse and a flowing georgette dupatta, reflected her desire for a unique bridal look. A report by News18 quoted designer Monali Roy describing Ira as "patient and understanding," and actively involved in the design process.
She asserted, âIra wanted the traditional lehenga silhouette with a more modern blouse cut. Overall we took seven months to plan and execute the piece. More than 300 hours of labour went into producing the lehenga.â The report also stated that designed on pure raw silk, the custom shade of red complemented the intricate gold embroidery, featuring sequins, kardana, and traditional zardozi techniques.
Sereia Design Studio also designed three additional outfits for Ira's wedding festivities. The teal embroidered velvet blouse and draped dhoti set for the signing ceremony, the floor-length ivory thread work and pearl embroidered dress for the mehendi, and the gorgeous blue velvet lehenga with hooded cape for the sangeet showcased Ira's diverse and captivating style.
Speaking of Ira Khan's grand wedding reception, it was held at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai. The event saw a bevy of celebrities gracing the occasion, including Nita and Mukesh Ambani, Salman Khan, Raj Thackeray, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Rekha, Katrina Kaif, and many more.

Throwback: When a section of the industry speculated that Hrithik Roshanâs Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Aamir Khanâs Mann were based on Titanic
The much-loved Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai completed 24 years yesterday. It was released in cinemas on January 14, 2000, and was the biggest hit of that year. Debutant Hrithik Roshan became a superstar overnight and continues to rule even today. Though the actress opposite him, Ameesha Patel, was also a newcomer, the film was in the news even before its release. In fact, more than 25 years ago, there were even rumours that the Rakesh Roshan-directorial is based on the Hollywood blockbuster, Titanic (1997)!
This interesting bit of information was mentioned in Komal Nahtaâs magazine Film Information dated June 27, 1998. It mentioned that as per rumours in the film industry, not just Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai but also Aamir Khan-Manisha Koirala starrer Mann (1999) was Titanicâs remake. The article debunked the myth and also said that the only similarity between the Hindi films and Titanic was that they were being shot aboard a ship. Since Titanic was also set on a ship, probably some people put two and two together and spread the speculation.
A major section of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai was set on a ship in the first half. The film was the story of Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) and Sonia (Ameesha Patel) who meet in Mumbai and later on a cruise ship. Due to an interesting turn of events, both are stranded on an island where they fall in love. In an interview to Komal Nahtaâs Film Information magazine dated December 5, 1998, Rakesh Roshan spoke in detail about why he chose the Star Clipper ship of the USA and the challenges he faced in shooting on board and taking the aerial shots mid-sea. Bollywood Hungama published excerpts of this interview on January 14.
Mann, meanwhile, directed by Indra Kumar was about Dev (Aamir Khan) and Priya (Manisha Koirala). Both meet each other on a cruise and though they were engaged to their respective partners, sparks flew between them. The musical entertainer was shot on Sun Cruises in Singapore.
As for Titanic, it was directed by James Cameron and told the story of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), a poor artist and his love affair with Rose (Kate Winslet) aboard an ill-fated ship in 1912. It was based on accounts of the sinking of RMS Titanic though it was also extensively fictionalized. The disaster film was a blockbuster across the world. In India, it stunned one and all as it did exceedingly well despite not being dubbed in Hindi for almost a year.
As per the Film Information issue dated August 22, 1998, Titanic was the first ever English film to have completed 25 weeks in more than 10 centres in India. It recorded footfalls of nearly 2.5 crores which is higher than many of the big hits of today. The report stated, âIt has also been the first English film to have run to full houses for its first 10 weeks. What is more remarkable is the fact that Titanic achieved such a huge success despite having only 86 prints in circulation, and all in the original (English) version! In fact, the collections of Titanic in India are the fourth highest in the whole of Asia, after Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.â

Happy 50th Birthday Hrithik Roshan: The total collection of his films is a HUGE Rs. 1908.20 crores; has been a part of 5 biggest hits of the year; Fighter is expected to be his first Rs. 400 crores plus grosser
Hrithik Roshan, as we all know, debuted with Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000). The manner in which the actor created a rage among the aam junta even before release was unprecedented. It collected Rs. 44.28 crores and was the biggest blockbuster of the year. In todayâs times, these collections amount to nearly Rs. 295 crores.
For the next few years, Hrithik gave flops and average grossers, with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) being the only super-hit. He got back into the big league with Koi Mil Gaya (2003), a rare sci-fi entertainer of Bollywood. It went on to collect Rs. 47.20 crores and was that yearâs biggest hit. Going forward, Koi Mil Gaya became a part of a successful franchise. The next installment, Krrish (2006), was a blockbuster. The same year, Hrithik was seen in two films, both of which were super-successes. Dhoom 2 broke all records as it collected Rs. 81.01 crores and the actor, with his performance, redefined the definition of cool.
After a slight lull, Hrithik Roshan bounced back with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Agneepath (2012) and Krrish 3 (2013). Bang Bang (2014) and Kaabil (2016) were semi-hits while Super 30 (2019) was a hit. War (2019), meanwhile, was a true blockbuster and his entry scene in the film is legendary.
In short, Hrithik Roshanâs box office track record has been exemplary. The total collections of all his 26 films stand at a huge Rs. 1908.20 crores. This includes 5 blockbusters, 2 super-hits, 2 semi-hits and 3 hits. He also has the feat of being a part of the 5 biggest hits of the year â Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Koi Mil Gaya, Dhoom 2 and War.

Karmma Calling: Raveena Tandon, Namrata Sheth starrer unveils a tale of revenge behind the glitz and glamour
The Kothari empire is filled with glitz, glamour and opulence â it is a world of the unapologetically rich, but there is a lot more than what meets the eye? Gaurav Banerjee, Head â Content, Disney+ Hotstar & HSM Entertainment Network, Disney Star opened up about the web show and said, âWith Karmma Calling we bring to audiences an entertaining story that narrates a tale of two powerful women in a glamorous set-up and around the themes of love, deceit, betrayal, romance and vengeance that will resonate with our viewers. The series has been beautifully made by Ruchi Narain and R.A.T films have been brilliant partners to create this extravagant series.â
Talking about her character, Raveena Tandon shared, âPlaying Indrani Kothari helped me explore a very different aspect of myself as an actor, it is unlike any characters I have played before . I am experimenting with my characters. Indrani is powerful, strong-headed and wants to maintain her position in the elitist society. She has secrets to hide but her life is altered in many ways as Karma Talwar enters the picture but she is not a woman to give in to her Karma that easily. Karmma Calling is a tale of the glamorous, powerful Indrani Kothari and the enigmatic Karma Talwar and itâll surely keep the audiences on Disney+ Hotstar hooked.â
Further elaborating on her character, Namrata Sheth added, âKarmma Calling dives into the glamorous world of the rich and reveals more than what meets the eye. Essaying Karma Talwar was a challenging and enriching experience for me as an actor. Sheâs very layered, has a strong mind-set and wonât stop at anything. Working with the entire team at R.A.T. films and Disney+ Hotstar has been a pleasure and I had especially an incredible experience shooting with Raveena Tandon. Iâve always admired her and have learned so much from her through the shoot. I canât wait for the audiences to watch the series on Disney+ Hotstar.â
Talking about his role in Karmma Calling, Varun Sood said, âPlaying the role of Ahaan Kothari was like a dream come true for me. While Ahaanâs character may seem simple, he has a multilayered and complex personality which the audience will definitely connect with. I am similar to him in some ways, which made it easier for me to sink into the skin of the character. Working with Raveena maâam was a dream come true. I have been a fan of her since childhood and to have this opportunity felt surreal. Moreover, I am thankful to Ruchi, R.A.T. films and Disney+ Hotstar for making me a part of this larger-than-life show.â
Karmma Calling is based on the U.S. original series Revenge, which aired from 2011â2015 and was produced by ABC Signature, a part of Disney Television Studios. Produced by R.A.T films, adapted for India and directed by Ruchi Narain, the series features Varun Sood along with Gaurav Sharma, Waluscha Dâsouza, Amy Aela, Viraf Patel, Piyush Khati in pivotal roles. Now, in yet another photo which has found its way on social media, Aditya Roy Kapur and Ananya Panday are seen covered from head to toe in down jacket, trench coats, and other warm clothes, as they are seen enjoying their time on the snow and practicing, what seems like ice skating.
Interestingly, right before they left, they duo was snapped together at the airport, albeit not together. Furthermore, a day ago, the two actors were also seen returning from their short New Years vacation from the England capital.
Aditya Roy Kapur and Ananya Panday also were a hot topic of discussion on Koffee with Karan 8 couch when host Karan Johar said, âSo rumour has it and I asked her as well that you are dating Ananya Panday.â To this, Aditya replied, âYou see Karan you said on your show âAsk me no secrets and Iâll tell you no liesâ.â On the other hand, just like Aditya while Ananya dodged the question with some quirky responses, she eventually maintained that âSome things are private and special and it should be kept that way but I really want to talk about my professional life because no oneâs talking about it.â
