Nobody:
Sriram Raghavan: What if I cast Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif in a noir romance set in 1980s Bombay and made it the most fun film to come out of Bollywood in at least two years?

MERRY CHRISTMAS (2024) 🌲🌲
Tumblr media
My first movie from 2024. And now this is not the best from Sriram Raghavan but still it was great. The movie excelled at building suspense with its slow pace. The performances were good & that retro vibe was captured beautifully.
The movie was slow in its first half & may have got a little fast in its climax. Although being a murder mystery, there was not much Mystery to the murder but to hide it. The movie builds anticipation well but does not reward it that well.

Post Credits Scene: Unwrapping "Merry Christmas" - A Critical Review
Introduction:
Welcome to Post Credits Scene, where we delve into the latest releases, dissecting every element from context to characters. This week, we unravel “Merry Christmas,” a film directed by Sriram Raghavan that promised much but may have fallen short in execution.
Tumblr media
Plot Synopsis:
Set against the backdrop of a Christmas Eve in Mumbai, “Merry Christmas” follows the chance encounter between loners Maria and Albert, leading to a series of events involving a dead body and unexpected twists. The film hinges on the chemistry between its leads, portrayed by Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, as they navigate through a night of intrigue and suspense.
Critique:
Despite its ambitious premise, “Merry Christmas” struggles to deliver on its promise, particularly in capturing the chemistry between Kaif and Sethupathi. The film’s attempts to weave a tale of romance and mystery fall flat, hindered by poor casting choices and lackluster performances. Kaif’s portrayal feels constrained by uninspired writing, while Sethupathi fails to infuse his character with depth and emotion, despite his undeniable talent.
Directorial Approach:
Raghavan’s direction, while ambitious, feels heavy-handed at times, favoring exposition over genuine emotion. The film’s pacing and tonal inconsistencies further detract from its impact, leaving audiences feeling disconnected from the narrative. Raghavan’s attempt to create suspenseful twists ultimately feels forced, undermining the authenticity of the characters and their interactions.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, “Merry Christmas” falls short of its potential, failing to capture the essence of its premise. While the film may have aimed for intrigue and romance, it ultimately misses the mark, leaving viewers with a sense of disappointment. Join us next time on Post Credits Scene as we explore more cinematic offerings and dissect their merits and flaws.

Anurag Kashyap hails Merry Christmas; calls Katrina Kaif-Vijay Sethupathi starrer “Hitchcockian love story with a terrific payoff”
Anurag Kashyap has showered praise on Sriram Raghavan's Merry Christmas, calling it a "slow-burn with a terrific payoff" and urging audiences to give it a shot.
Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has heaped praise on the recently released neo-noir thriller Merry Christmas, directed by Sriram Raghavan and starring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi. Kashyap took to Instagram to express his admiration for the film, calling it a "love letter to Hitchcock" and highlighting the stellar performances of the lead actors.
Tumblr media
In his Instagram caption, Kashyap stated, "Love this film... @sriram.raghavanofficial has never known to play safe and this time has gone a made hitchcockian love story with two actors belonging to different cultures and them coming together on Christmas Eve. He again does new things and creates a slow burn with a terrific pay off. Both @katrinakaif and @actorvijaysethupathi bring their best game to it."
He further commended the supporting cast, naming Sanjay Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, and Ashwini Kalsekar, and encouraged his followers to watch the film, acknowledging the efforts of production houses Matchbox Shots and Tips Industries Ltd. He concluded by praising Raghavan's dedication to his craft, saying, "Great to see you making this happen. And the cinephile in Sriram is as omnipresent in this as on his T-shirts and his life."
instagram
Having said that, it is worth mentioning here that earlier, filmmaker Atlee had also penned a heartfelt review of Merry Christmas. The filmmaker called it his “favourite narrative of recent times," praising its blend of "a beautiful love story with an amazing thriller." While showering praises on Sethupathi, Atlee called him "pure class" and gave a shoutout to his "wooowwww" climax performance. He further lauded Katrina's work and Raghavan's direction, concluding with "a pure classic written all over it."
Released in Tamil and Hindi, Merry Christmas is currently running in theatres. The film is produced under the production banner of Tips Films and Matchbox Pictures. It is based on Frédéric Dard's French novel Le Monte-charge.
