Exclusive Interview: Luke Gilford & Charlie Plummer on dreamy queer rodeo movie National Anthem
Growing up in Evergreen, Colorado, some of filmmaker and photographer Luke Gilford’s most vivid childhood memories are of being at the rodeo with his father, who was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Leaving the rural Southwest for New York City and Los Angeles, Gilford only returned to the rodeo arenas of his youth in 2016 when he discovered the International Gay Rodeo…

National Anthem by Luke Gilford
“National Anthem by Luke Gilford. The exhibition is Gilford’s first solo show in New York. The work Gilford is presenting is the result of years documenting the unique subculture within the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA) – the organizing body for the LGBTQ+ cowboy and cowgirl communities in North America.”

‘National Anthem’ Review: Luke Gilford’s Light, Gender-Fluid Rites-Of-Passage Movie Blazes A Mild Trail Through The Wild West – SXSW
Thankfully there seems to have been a moratorium lately on movies that mine the LGTBQ+ experience for tragedy and awards. There’s also been a move towards authenticity, notably in the area of casting trans actors for trans roles, and both of those factors help and hinder photographer Luke Gilford’s feature debut, a film as rich in personality as a Diane Arbus snap but, dramatically, about as…

"National Anthem"
“We’re taught in school to recite the national anthem every morning. It has this aura of promise. But as we grow older, we realise this promise is kind of a myth. What I think is really beautiful, and so inspiring, about the queer rodeo community is that it brings back that aura of promise. It embraces both ends of the American cultural spectrum: people living on the land, but who are also queer.”
