Thalergy

The opposite of Thanergy (AKA “Death Energy”) in the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir.

So you say, “ok so it’s just life energy?” to which you are mostly correct. Thalergy is exactly that but what’s interesting about this to me (and soon to you all as well I imagine) is the etymology of thalergy!

The etymology?

The Etymology.

Thanergy as death energy derives its name from Thanatos, the greek god of death (technically the personified spirit of non-violent death but modern perception of the name is usually edgier than that lol). So it would be normal for those unfamiliar with the myriad of divinities within the Hellenistic pantheon to justly assume the ‘thal–’ in ‘thalergy’ comes from an opposite divinity of Thanatos that was a personified spirit of life. Except that doesn’t exist. Reading the first two books I knew that thalergy as a word wasn’t derived from any greek or roman words meaning “life” but I didn’t really dig any deeper on where it did come from because I didn’t think it was overly important. I Was Incorrect.

Because you see, the context for me to really connect the dots had gone over my head up until I had read Nona the Ninth. (I recall some meta posts pointing out that the Themes™ had in fact been present in the previous books just less obvious.)

What Themes? And Who The Fuck Is Thalergy Named For??

Thalassa.

So yeah! Remember all those posts talking about the importance of all the themes regarding the sea/ocean in the Locked Tomb series? Yeah so here’s more fuel for that lmao

Edit 11/20/2022: also many people have brought up other examples like Thalia (the muse of Festivity whose name also means blooming) as another more direct connection to life and @adurna0 who actually speaks Greek has pointed out that thaleros is in fact a word that means "lively" so even if the Thalassa connection is a thing it is more likely a double meaning than the lone one.

Alright, I promised an update in the tags of the queued post a few days ago, so now that my internet is finally strong enough to let me create a new post from scratch, I'll actually do that.

Ultimately things ended up taking a really fucking weird turn again, and after speaking to the service company directly, we found out that the "service personnel" that had been here, weren't actually from their company despite toting their uniforms.

Unfortunately this isn't even the first time something like this has happened, so this information wasn't as hard to believe as you'd think. One of the nosy elderly men from down the street was even able to provide some photos he took of the "workers" and their van, which he had taken "just in case", which is a hell of a lot more than we could do last time.

On the positive end of things, the real service personnel showed up yesterday with just as foul an attitude as the fake ones had, and have apparently set to work undoing whatever was done to fuck up our internet access so badly. Though they have been significantly slowed by the presence of the police, who are treating the situation with about as much urgency as you would expect from someone being chased by a half blind snail, and really just seem to be enjoying getting in everyone's way.

All in all, shit's weird as per usual, but thankfully on the way to being fixed if my current internet status is anything to go by. (The real workers took one look at what had been done and just said "What the fuck!" which... isn't encouraging)

Either way, I wanted to thank you all so much for being so patient again Darling ones, I hope you can continue to bear with me for just a little bit longer 🖤

20. kiss on a scar

Marc has barely been inside of his home for 30 seconds before a tiny beast attacks him, her arms wrapping themselves around his leg.

“Hi, Lina,” Marc says before crouching down to kiss the hair on the top of his daughter’s head. “You’re on your own?”

She nods vigorously, hugging her elephant cuddly toy to her chest. “Babar wanted to watch Encanto. Papa is with Jaume, he wanted to ride his bike.”

Marc smiles, he probably could have guessed that. “Okay, thank you. Hey, I was planning on making some pizza tonight, you want to help me prepare it?” And when he gets a vigorous and excited nod in answer, he adds, “Nice, you can go wash your hands, I’m just gonna go check on the boys real quick.”

Marc finds them in the garden. Jaume’s bike is upside down, wheels in the air, Valentino crouched down in front of it. Jaume is standing right next to him with his fists set on each side of his hips. He looks so much like Valentino like that, it makes Marc’s heart feel stupidly full.

“Hey, what happened here?” Marc asks as he ruffles his son’s hair in greeting.

At the sound of his voice, Valentino gets up, leaning his head down for a quick kiss.

“Papa cut his finger earlier today and now he can’t fix my bike,” Jaume says.

“What? Of course I can fix your bike, I was just evaluating the situation,” Valentino protests with an half offended look on his face.

“Can we come back to the part where Jaume said you cut your finger ?” Marc asks.

Valentino immediately rolls his eyes. “It’s nothing.”

Marc grabs Valentino’s wrist, turning it around until he can find the tiny cut on the top phalange of his index finger.

“What happened?”

The cut is not even two centimeters long, it will already have turned pink by the time they go to bed, won’t even be noticeable in a couple of days.

“I was cutting some fruits for the twins to snack on after their nap, knife ripped when I was going through the blueberries.”

Marc winces in sympathy. It’s the stupidest of cuts that are sometimes the most annoying when they happen, like when your tender skin meets the edge of too sharp paper.

Marc uses his hold on Valentino to bring the finger to his lips. “There, magic kiss. You’re fixed.”

“Daaaaad,” Lina yells from inside of the house, snatching both of their attention. “My hands are ready to make pizza.”

Marc chuckles and catches the fond smile on Valentino’s face.

“Looks like you have your own mission,” Valentino says.

“Yeah,” Marc nods, kissing the inside of Valentino’s wrist once before letting it go. “Are you going to be okay with Jaume’s bike or do I need to declare you unfit and take care of it?”

His tone is gently mocking and it earns him a slap to the side of his hip. Marc starts laughing and Jaume’s shocked gasp makes him giggle even more.

When he joins Lina in the kitchen and she asks him what’s so funny, Marc can just smile and say, “Nothing, your dads are just being silly.”

I love dogs. Genuinely. I love them. They always make me smile and I have worked as a dog trainer and caretaker for most of my life, starting when I was a literal child.

And there is nothing that pisses me off more than seeing my local shelter's numbers balloon up from about 100 dogs before the winter holidays to 313 dogs by January 5th.

Do not get a puppy or a dog on a whim for a gift. DO NOT. Dogs are living beings. You can't just throw them away like a torn piece of paper if you don't like them. By adopting them, you are taking responsibilty for that dog. They are not just toys or props to make family photos look good either. This is a big enough problem that most shelters I know will not adopt out dogs during December at all anymore. Because they know they will just be coming right back.

And if you do think about it and plan it out and then decide to adopt a dog, RESEARCH THE DAMN BREED FIRST. You need to know what you're getting yourself into and what to expect. If you do not own livestock or have the space and experience for a livestock guardian breed, don't get one! Because you can't provide it with what it needs to thrive! Don't get onto herding dogs for herding because thats what they were bred to do! It's instinct for them! Same with dogs bred for guarding or personal defense. Those dogs will likely be hard for new owners to handle! So unless you have experience with them and can handle them, don't get them! "Oh but I want scary dog privileges!" I do not care. If you are not able to train the dog, you do not need to have the dog, simple as that. Because if you don't? Just like with all other breeds, things can and very often will go wrong. And that won't be the dog's fault, it will be yours.

So, in summary, do not get a dog (or any animal actually) on a whim or because of an aesthetic or something stupid only to dump the dog on the street or at a shelter when you realise a week later that you didn't know what you were getting yourself into. Do you research. Dogs are not playthings, they are living beings.

Suletta’s wish list returns this week! We’ve not seen it since the keychains arc of season 1 so I was wondering when it was going to make an appearance again. Feels incredibly deliberate that while Suletta has been making a lot of headway on her list (to distract herself from the breakup), the only wish we’re shown that she’s not completed recently is celebrate a birthday party with friends.

Tails' real name being a human name (Miles) is weird, so I've decided that his name being a human name was an accident (his full name being a speed pun is a happy accident). His parents did the same thing that Asriel's parents did in Undertale, where they took the first two letters of one parent's name and the last three letters of the other parent's name and mashed them together to get their child's name. In his case, his mother's name was Mist, and his father's name was . . . Squiggles.
