i think what's so compelling about carrie and brody's relationship, despite it being so clearly doomed from the start, is that it perfectly and completely captures the essence of that equally toxic and intoxicating connection two deeply but differently insane people can have.

it's a train wreck you can't look away from and yet at the same time there is a part of you that inherently wants to root for it to beat the odds, for love to be able to heal them, for it to work out. but you also know that the love they have for each other is warped, unhealthy, inconsistent, disproportionate, and just none of what it should be.

on a meaningful level, they can only hurt each other. but superficially, they seem to make each other happy. and that little bit of superficial happiness is, more so for carrie, the only thing outside of the mission that gives life any meaning.

to carrie, he's the idea that life might be worth living and that there might be someone who needs her to be willing to live more than to die. and to brody, carrie is the fleeting hope that maybe he's not already dead.

of course, brody had died too many times to know how to live, and we know how that ended

but in a sense, he did save her life in that through their daughter, he gave her that reason to keep going, that reason to care about making it back home.

He met you once or saw you once. That was enough.
