So everyone knows abt last train home being the saddest ed to any anime ever and yada yada, but people never talk about what specifically makes it so sad; other than the music itself being very melancholic and hitting you right in the heart. There's just so many little details packed into this ED that deserve to be talked about. A great example I recently rediscovered via tiktok is that when they're all in the train car, Joseph is looking away from the rest of the group and holding three tickets-- the plane tickets for him, Jotaro, and Polnareff at the very end of the part.

Thats a very cool one, and its a small detail that otherwise wouldn't have been picked up on if you hadn't watched it before. BUT, upon rewatch of the full ed for the first time in a few years, I noticed something WORSE.

The last segment of the ed shows footsteps in the desert sand, and you watch them get covered up with the wind. It stills on that shot for a while as the sun emerges on the horizon--

--Before panning down to Jotaro, looking over his shoulder for just a moment before walking off in the opposite direction.

As the sand blows on, what he leaves behind is not a trail of footsteps, but a single photograph: the one all the crusaders took together when they first arrived in egypt, as it pans in for that iconic final shot.

While his friends are gone and will inevitably be lost to the sands of time, they will always be cherished in his memories.

And basically I'm in agony.

The LAST TRAIN HOME: Playing In Your Face by Sydcarmy

In the last part of the Ceres episode, after Syd gave her beef and risotto dish to the restaurant critic unknowingly, Carmy apologizes to Syd for being Shi--y.

This is about him saying her dish being tremendous but not perfect, not ready.

She tells him it's all good and continues calling out orders.

The tempo is good and Carmy notices and tells them he likes the tempo and to keep it up.

Then the song Last Train Home starts.

Carmy and Syd are in the shots together and apart

I like John Mayer's music, so I look up the lyrics and what they mean AND

My dear readers, those show runners are playing in our faces.

Playing fast and loose

Here's what the song means:

"If you wanna know me, then you gotta know me through and through" shows that he wants his loved one to know everything about him.

The chorus also says, "So if you're coming with me, let me know/Maybe you're the last train/Maybe you're the last train home," implying that if someone is down for the ride after knowing all they do about him, they may just be the one"

The song is about a very confused man trying to figure out whether or not to fall in love

But it also sets up Carmy's screaming fit in the next episode REVIEW. If he did decide to fall in love, now there's all this pressure to perform for Syd and give her what she wants, which is a great restaurant and he wasn't ready yet, at least not to handle the crisis of the pre-orders.

So all hell broke loose

But not only that

It must be why Carmy was so distraught when Syd left . Because he'd decided to fall in love and she left him. I thought he was upset because he wouldn't have help to deal with all the pre-orders when it was a crisis situation, when in fact it was about her leaving HIM.

He wasn't that distraught when Marcus couldn't be found

Last Train Home - The Bear: Season One, Episode Six Ceres

Last Train Home by John Mayer has been playing intermittently in my mind since I started re-re-watching The Bear. I prefer the ballad version because I enjoy instrumentation. And I can appreciate the words better with the slower tempo.

This song is very important to me. It's a groove.

It got me in the mindset of turning points. There's so many layers that I want to explore. I want to do this analysis justice. And, I acknowledge that it will be all over the place. Looking at my notes and drafts...yeah. I'm at the, as I call, "Splatter Plate Draft" that we see when Sydney starts her own culinary journey in Season Two.
