There's a lot of true and important things to be said about the role smartphones in our lives , especially the negatives, but this guy is just saying the boomer thing with psychology vocab. It used to be TV addiction, and the conclusion was that the damn youths are on the TV all the time. Then it was computer addiction, the youths are on that damn computer all the time. Then it was the internet, and now it's the phone. He's saying nothing.
The way these devices are designed from user standpoint is a problem - increasingly they use questionable psychological tricks to keep you engaged, but muh "just talk to your family" isn't the solution. The familial structures (and many other social structures) have already collapsed and the phone is not to blame, the phone is filling the power gap of attention and contact
