Advice for Remy, Day 87. Keep reaching for things, even if you’re not sure you’ll ever get them. Ambition is a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand it’s undoubtedly a positive thing to have something to strive for, an aim, a goal. It gives you purpose and keeps you going when your motivation may be low. It can drive you on to great things and shape you into a better version of yourself. However it can also bring out a nasty, ruthless side to you, where all that matters is achieving that end goal at the cost of everything else around you. These are the people who trample over work colleagues to get that promotion or cheat their friends to win. I’ve never been a particularly ambitious person in many respects, not wanting to climb high on the corporate ladder or earn a huge salary. A happy home life and the ability to get by is more than enough - others are welcome to those besuited corporate positions where they’re barely at home and miss seeing their kids grow up. But saying all of that, a healthy amount of ambition can be a good thing. And if you decide to strive for something - whether it be a particular job, an experience, or even just happiness, don’t give up striving if things don’t look like they’ll go your way. Optimism is such a positive quality in people, and it’ll get you far in life - it may not necessarily get you the thing you originally wanted, but it’ll improve your mental health and make you a lot of friends on the way. Paul’s optimism and determination that he can get his confiscated toys from the windowsill (when he clearly can’t reach them) makes me feel for him so much that I actually want to give them back to him. So his optimism and never-give-up attitude has paid off (although it does significantly help if you’re an adorable little scamp).
