Ethical Alternatives to Dolls Kill

While Dolls Kill offers kawaii, punk, goth, and streetwear fashions, they’re an unethical fast fashion company that has been accused of stealing designs from small creators. They’ve also been accused of promoting rape and racism (implying that only white people can be goth, selling a Native American headdress as a costume, and supporting police during the Black Lives Matter movement) and having a lack of transparency in how they reduce their impact on people, animals, and the environment. With this in mind, here are some of my favorite alternatives I found (you can tap on the titles to access the sites)

LOUDBODIES

This Romania-based retailer offers sizes from XXS-10XL, and you can even make a custom order for free if you'd like! Many of their pieces are pricey, but they do offer an affordable line of fashion. Their values include sustainable and recycled materials, made-to-order clothing, low waste production, OEKO-TEX certified fabrics, carbon neutral shipping, body-inclusive models (see above) and locally-made clothing. They also offer worldwide shipping.

NOCTEX

NOCTEX is great for dark, goth, edgy fashion. They’re based in Canada and ship internationally. Available sizes only include XS-XL, but this retailer uses reclaimed and deadstock materials, and also have low-waste production. They offer many items including tops, dresses, pants, skirts, footwear, and accessories like bags, makeup, and jewelry, so there’s a lot to choose from!

Uye Surana

For lingerie lovers, this is the place! While they’re based in New York, their clothing is ethically made in Columbia, with cute designs that come in sizes XS-5XL, so it’s quite inclusive! Items include bralettes, undies, stockings, camis, and garter belts, so go on and be adorably sexy, my loves.

KILLSTAR

Despite being introduced by Dolls Kill, the UK brand Killstar is actually more ethical. In fact, they’ve cut their ties with the brand over the owner’s support of police during the BLM movement. They’ve donated to charities that promote ending racism (whereas Dolls Kill promoted racism to an extent) and they also promote individuality. They offer sizes XS-4XL (from what I’ve found) and they even have men’s clothing!

Broken Promises

Another brand that left Dolls Kill, Broken Promises is based in California. Offering sizes XS-3XL, this brand offers clothing that caters to skate culture for all genders. Their clothes are also sold at Zumiez, so if you don’t want to shop online and you would prefer to go to the mall, you’ll probably find them there!

Disturbia

And another UK gothic brand that was promoted by Dolls Kill, this family-owned business has been going strong since 2003. Their website claims that sustainability is “a core value in [their] ethos”, and their goal is to create fashion that doesn’t harm the environment. They’re committed to recycling and reducing their carbon footprint, and all of their leather is false or recycled to reduce animal cruelty. They have a fully traceable supply chain with manufacturers in the UK, China, Portugal, Turkey, and Morocco, all with safe production facilities. Rest assured, your money will be going to a great place.

Cyberdog

Ravers, this one is for you. Catering to clubbers and DJs since 1994, Cyberdog offers neon and dark streetwear. They’re based in London, and their flagship store is located in Camden Market, so anyone who lives around the area (or would like to visit) can see these rad designs in person! (P.S: A huge downside is that they only offer sizes S-L, so this brand has the smallest size range on here)

Gothic Lamb

“The home for melanated misfits”, as their designer calls it, is black-owned and offers sizes from S-5XL, making this brand one of the more inclusive ones on this list. The owner, who calls herself Lucy, founded Gothic Lamb in the summer of 2016. She was inspired by brands like Killstar and Disturbia, however, she found that there was a lack of representation at the time, as she felt that none of the models looked like her, so she decided to create her own. While there is a small collection, it’s still a great collection and it’s a great place to purchase from if you like supporting black-owned businesses.

publicspace

A vaporwave-streetwear brand based in Los Angeles, CA, they support and collaborate with artists to create their designs (hence why they’re named publicspace). Though they have a small collection, their size range is XS-3XL, so it’s mostly inclusive.

Shop secondhand

You can also shop on Etsy to purchase from independent designers. A much cheaper option would be to shop secondhand. Sites like Poshmark and Depop are great for shopping secondhand, especially if you want to buy from fast fashion brands like H&M and Shein without giving them your money. Alternatively, you can go to your local thrift shop (do not shop at the Salvation Army, they are aggressively Christian, homophobic and transphobic) or consignment store. You can give your unwanted clothes and other items to these places (consignment stores will give you a certain percentage of their price for the item) to help people and need.

In conclusion, please do not buy from unethical fast fashion retailers and consider shopping ethically, whether it be for new or used clothes.

Steve Harrington and the Witchy GF

So I mentioned witchy GF for Steve here and I got an overwhelmingly positive response via messages and a few asks and comments as well.

So here's kinda what I'm thinking.

Maybe witchy GF is a friend of kawaii/lovecore GF's from back home.

Cause you know, she's the new kid.

And maybe like, she's the best friend actually and so it was so fucking hard when kawaii gf had to leave.

And maybe witchy GF just thought, fuck it, might as well trade one small town for another.

So she fucking does. Just up and moves to Hawkins.

Maybe it takes her a while to get there because you know, she was still a senior and trying to save up.

But eventually, she gets enough together and just thinks, fuck it, I'll figure it out.

And maybe she shows up in the parking lot one day.

And Goth GF is over there being shy over Billy even though the little simp has been dating him for a year.

And Kawaii GF is making Eddie blush because there's no hope for him when it comes to him. I mean, kawaii already landed him and yet she still flirts with him RELENTLESSLY. Poor boy's heart will probably explode one of these days.

And so anyway maybe witchy GF pulls up on a motorcycle.

And it's all black and gold and glistening in the light.

And maybe she gets off the bike, black and gold celestial boots hitting the pavement.

And she lets loose the long swishy skirt (That she tied up to keep it from being a problem while driving).

And maybe she's got a black leather jacket with gold stars on the sleeves and pins on the front.

And maybe she takes off her helmet to fix the purple wrap around her head. She adjust the little black and gold decorative band around it because you know, this is a new place and new people and she veils to protect her energy.

And maybe she slips the giant gold hoops back in her ears, the glittery gold of her nail polish glinting in the light.

And maybe her eyes that are done up in sparkling gold shadow and ornate black liner search the parking lot.

And she spots a familiar flash of pink and red and glitter and hearts.

And so she whistles a tune that she knows will get her attention.

And kawaii GF immediately stops teasing her boyfriend and slowly pivots around.

And she's just standing there, staring across the parking lot trying to decide if she's had a stroke or if that witch bitch fine piece of ass is really her best friend from home.

And then Kawaii gf is off in a dead run, launching herself when she gets a few feet from witch girl who laughs and catches her.

Fingers tattooed with symbols and runes pat the head of the excitable kawaii gf.

A gold lip ring glints in the light as she smiles, her red lips stretching in happiness.

And then kawaii gf has grasped her inked fingers and is all but yanking witchy girl across the parking lot.

She's screaming. Screaming.

At the top of her lungs.

"Babe! Babe! Come meet the love of my life!"

To which Eddie is slightly offended of course.

And she all but flings the girl at the group of people.

Goth GF is, of course, flustered because god damn where do all these hot girls keep coming from?

Billy is amused by this if not a little territorial… again.

Poor Eddie is still trying to recover from having a person flung at him and also trying to process the fact that kawaii GF is telling him that witchy girl was her first EVERYTHING.

And apparently she has no shame in it even if witchy girl looks a little embarassed to have had their business put out there like that.

And beside Billy's Camaro is Steve, leaned up against his own car.

It was less about looking cool and more about the fact that fact that if he didn't he was fairly certain his knees would buckle.

And he's glad he has sunglasses on because his eyes are blown wide.

But apparently, his mouth that had fallen open was a little obvious because Robin, always ready to dig at him, pops him under the chin.

"Close your mouth, Dingus. You'll catch flies."

Hey, loves! So I hope you liked the intro to witchy gf. She's part witchy part biker because I think Steve secretly needs a girl like that. Tbh. Also, by the way… I have literally created the actual characters for Goth GF, Kawaii GF and Witchy GF with names, descriptions, backgrounds and everything. I would love to share them with you and also maybe just do a trifecta story with the ladies and their gents. AND I actually made one for Robin too… with a gremlincore/goblincore GF. So there's that. But idk if you want to see that so I haven't mentioned it before.

Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Execution (Eguzekyuushon): Translator's Notes

When I took on this project for myself to translate Mafu's latest song, I didn't realize what an intensive process it would be to translate something completely from scratch ^^' Luckily, my school had fall break this past week and I've had time to work on this translation between studying for my Japanese and engineering midterms. (And if I counted this as studying for my Japanese written midterm, that's my business, okay?) Truthfully, there are still parts of this translation that I'm not 100% on, and I am still a novice, so I would prefer if people would use this translation merely for reference, rather than some definitive translation (so that my misunderstandings of Mafumafu's intent don't get reprinted all over the internet, ehe). If you would translate certain parts differently, I would love to discuss. 日本語を勉強している学生として、もっと上手になりたい！

Execution is a song I adore for both its lyrical beauty and the incredible instrumental. Really, the melodic/harmonic contours, the instrumentation, the story of the song, and Mafumafu's dream-like voice are just a few of the things that draw me into this song. Particularly in his diction, I wanted to draw out a few of the themes I noticed as I was translating: Noh theatre, Othello, and opposing pairs.

Noh Theatre

Honestly, I'm not extremely knowledgeable about Noh Theatre. However, I have two things to point out. Firstly, the word he uses for farce, kyougen, does at face value refer to a lie or falsehood. But, depending on what characters are written, it can also refer specifically to a theatrical farce presented in the interlude of a Noh play. Secondly, the word I translated as "act" in "as the curtain resists falling on this act" is 幕 (maku), which is both the curtain and the act. So, I wanted to note this as another theatrical connection.

Othello

Although I write it quite ambiguously as "game board" in the first verse, the game board here is almost definitely an Othello board. I consider it to be confirmed, since he mentions Othello later in the song, and he mentions the board as being lined up in black and white—Othello is a game with two opposing player, where one plays as black and the other plays as white. Truthfully, I only recently learned how to play it on iMessage as "Reversi" with a friend, but I can explain that the premise of the game is to outmaneuver your opponent in order to turn as much of the board to your colour as possible.

Other than a game board, Othello is also a Shakespeare play where the eponymous protagonist is manipulated into believing his wife is committing adultery, and resultantly murders her out of rage. Certainly Shakespeare's story of Othello, too, has ties to Mafu's lyricism, as he describes in the song his own distorted love game. Don't you know what murder means?

Opposing Pairs

Throughout the song Mafumafu expresses several dualities. He expresses the duality of Othello with tragedy and comedy and the duality of the self with black and white. The duality I could not convey for the life of me was his use of 裏 (ura) and 表 (omote) in the line "Within the interior and facade of a birdcage are the imprisoned remnants of reality." Ura and omote are complete opposites, with ura expressing the rear, underlying, hidden, "offstage," or internal aspect of an object, and omote representing what is external, surface-level, or some visibly evident principle. In the end, with each word encompassing many abstractions I failed to adequately translate each in a single word T_T Other than that, his language itself encompassed two extremes. 病み可愛い (yami kawaii) which is "sickly cute" sounds very modern, is derivative of 夢可愛い (yume kawaii) and is strongly tied to the modern menhera aesthetic. Then, he gave me a hard time when he used a classical form to express "without believing." I am not yet proficient enough at Japanese to plumb the depths of his lyrical genius, but I was sincerely impressed by Mafu's dedication to this theme in even the extremes of diction he used.

Misc. Notes

Other than that, I wanted to point out a couple other things I noticed while translating. 口封じ (kuchifuuji) which I wrote as muzzling, can also have the implication of murdering someone in order to guarantee their silence. 定め (sadame) which I wrote as fate, does have the meaning of destiny/fate but also rule/regulation, which lends credence to the fact that the laws in this world are decided by powers beyond the speaker’s reach, almost as if within a play. Personally, I think this word also expresses another duality within itself.

Those are all the notes I have for this song. So, I'd like to end by saying that Mafumafu may be on an indefinite hiatus, but of course I still adore him with all my heart. He has cheered me on for nine years, so I will wait for him even if his hiatus were to end up being nine more years, www. Rest up Mafu-kun, and return when you're ready! Remember, your health and happiness are most important!

Plus Size Kawaii Fashion

Asian sizing tends to run smaller and the United States itself still has a lot of work to do when it comes to inclusive size ranges.
