Hot take (granted it’s about a show almost 40 years old but I’ve never seen this come up anywhere else): Muten Roshi, the Kame Sen’nin, is one of the most traumatized characters in Dragon Ball.

Yes. This dork.

Wait, wait, hear me out, I know his reputation, but bear with me...

I’m essentially expanding on thoughts I’ve had for a while and started putting into to words through an ask for @dragonballwish but I had another epiphany on the subject a few days ago and now it’s all boiling over.

All right, everyone knows Roshi is the OG Dragon Ball sensei character, the one in the memes about perverted old men, who people probably like to laugh at but maybe not talk about at length. I’m not going to list instances of the sort of behavior that gave him this reputation, IYKYK and all, but what if Roshi had a reason for living isolated in the middle of the ocean, away from people, interacting more with animals and sea creatures than other human beings, who in all likelihood will die long before he does?

No, I’m not accusing Toriyama of doing anything other than his usual MO of flying by the seat of his pants, I’m just saying, the pieces are there for a pretty compelling narrative/character arc.

Roshi’s vague about his personal history. When Dragon Ball gets rolling with the Wuxia elements of the story, he’s iffy about taking on pupils; he primarily makes the initial offer to Goku because he’s Gohan’s grandson. He only takes on Kuririn after the boys bring Lunch back to Kame House for... let’s call it companionship. Despite his choice to live alone, one could infer that he’s actually truly lonely. Hell, his goofy perversions could easily be the result of extended isolation, which all of us know does weird things to the mind.

Wish actually brought up this point; his isolation likely started after seeing the results of his teachings in Ox-King and Son Gohan, one a pillager, a murderer and a hoarder of treasure, the other thankfully not violent but uninterested in interacting much with the world (seems like Gohan also had his own sad story.)

He takes great pains to keep Kuririn and Goku from getting swelled egos; perhaps not only for the sake of their growth, but so as to avoid the mistakes he made with his previous pupils, Son Gohan and Ox-King.

He’s unfazed by most forms of threat to his life; Goku’s Ozaru form startles him, sure, yet he refuses to kill his student despite clearly being capable of doing so and chooses a far more drastic alternative instead. The Red Ribbon army showing up at his house only get taunts, a chuckle and a beating until someone takes Lunch hostage. Even then, he discourages her more violent persona from killing the soldier who threatened her; his appreciation for the sanctity of life could be part of his own disciplines, but it’s just as likely something shaped by his experiences.

He drops out of the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, despite hints that he could’ve gone to the finals again if he’d continued; he plants seeds of altruism in Tien’s mind to sway him away from Shen’s violence and in his words, foster the growth of a new hero.

We only learn anything of substance about Roshi’s past when 22nd Budokai arc ends and kicks off the start of the Piccolo Daimao saga.

And it’s here that we see Roshi well and truly rattled for the first time.

Roshi fought Piccolo Daimao alongside Mutaito and his fellow students; the battle cost him the lives of his friends and his master. Worst still, Shen, the only other martial artist shown to have survived the fight and the Kuririn to Roshi’s Goku, turned bitter; the last friendship Roshi had became so sour and resentful that neither of them could stand each other.

When the time comes for Roshi, Tien and Chaozu to confront Piccolo, the old hermit refuses to let anyone else face him; for all he’s lived through, he wouldn’t survive fighting another doomed battle alongside friends.

Toriyama doesn’t show or explain anything else about Roshi’s past, but we can infer that, at some point in the intervening years before Goku’s story begins, Roshi established his reputation as the Kame Sen’nin, while Shen did the same as the Tsuru Sen’nin.

In contrast to Shen, who garnered his reputation alongside his brother for taking the technique and skills he learned from Mutaito and twisting them for the purposes of torture, pain and assassination, Roshi must have gone to lengths to heal, at least somewhat, from the trauma and survivor’s guilt and grow stronger. Personally, I think to assuage his guilt, he would’ve traveled and helped people (maybe ‘twas in this time when he met and grappled with Korin) as something of a... hero.

I know it might feel like a stretch to see him that way, and I suspect he doesn’t feel much of a hero himself despite the somewhat flashy façade he puts on as Jackie Chun. But consider this fact:

There was a time when Roshi could ride Kinto’un.

We don’t see it, nor is it explicitly stated (that I can remember) but both Roshi and Turtle are surprised when he falls through the magic cloud instead of landing on it when he passes Kinto’un on to Goku. So something that happened between his Master’s demise and the start of the story we’re shown that robbed his purity of heart, at least by Kinto’un’s definition.

Again, was this traumatized survivor narrative what Toriyama intended for Roshi? Probably not.

I’m just saying, all the pieces are there.

childe: hakuno can be reaal chaotic too don't get me wrong (canonically likes reckless bond quests! and candy :pleading: she is a sweets luvr..) but i feel like she'd def try to prevent childe from doing anything too crazy sdfghj stop him from commiting atrocities, y'know! i feel like what would be sooo interesting to explore when it comes to them would be... family. hakuno doesn't have one! (she is so lonely actually ^_T) from what i'm reading from his character stories, he's being compared to wolves a lot (tho ngl i get more fox vibes but lmk what u think ta!) and i simply hold up bunnykuno (my hakuno is very bunnygirl coded. nodnod) because i'm basic but it's a neat trope!

gorou: i knowww i mostly talk about hakuno being a catluvr (they are her favs... along with foxes!) but she's a luvr of "fluffy-wuffy" (<- actual words she said) in general! what i'm saying is that she'd find his ears and tails super adorable :pleading: saw that he can speak to dogs too, and i think she would be so hyped about that VDNFBS sparkly-eyed stoic and all! i see that he likes sweets too so they can be sweets buddies methinks! (hakuno shares all her candies with him because she thinks his tail wagging when happy is the cutest thing-)

albedo: NONHUMAN FRENS..... ok but humanity is a really important theme for my hakuno and i think these two would be real interesting for that! really like it too because albedo's more of the logical type while hakuno's more emotional (though both of them really have that :| energy GDJFSH). albedo's line about socializing makes me really want them to have a chat about bonds and connection thooo (<- also a really important theme for my hakuno!) i know he likes desserts too so like- they can also be sweet buddies ! :pleading:

ayaka: not to say frens in all caps after i just did but leT AYAKA HAVE SOME FRIENDS!! one of which being a lovely little moon lady (who also wants friends, so it's perfect) uwu✨️ hakuno may look all elegant and ladylike but like i mentioned in the previous ask for murr-- she can be pretty damn chaotic! nothing too bad, but i think it miight help ayaka have a little more freedom in her life mayhaps? loosen up a little and enjoy the simpler things in life :,) her line about stability "I only wish life could be as leisurely as this a little more often... How greedy of me." is something that i can really imagine hakuno saying as well

aimé: HEEELLO TA OC?? 😳 seeing how he roams teyvat, i think he and hakuno could meet easily! maybe they could even wander together in a kinda adventure buddies kinda dynamic? hakuno isn't the best cook either but him liking charred food is so,,, FDJDHSHD (hakuno vc that's... really sad..) but yeah, after knowing that i think she'd definitely try to make him something, y'know, not charred! hiyori: hiyori being so bright and cheerful v hakuno's gentle radiance is a real nice contrast of vibes methinks! giving me sunshine and moonlight vibes respectively.... i also literally see him be described as overly blinding sgdjgs but that’s also interesting to me because hakuno is more of the type to fade off into the background (f for moon girl-) — not the only point of difference between them though! i kid you not, in canon hakuno was so broke she made a king cry and she’s really conscious about her spendings so-- on a comedic note, i feel like hakuno would pass out internally whenever she sees hiyori so effortlessly make a pricey purchase DVFKSBFN hopefully i've established hakuno as a fluffy-wuffy animal luvr because she would love to see his pics of bloody mary sm!!! would also love to see her okok <3

nazuna: i see nazuna places a strong value on honesty and hard work-- two very hakunocore traits i must say, i'm sorry!! they're both worrywarts that take care of others more than themselves i think, so i feel like they might nag on each other (/POS) a bit. it's because they care tho! i feel like hakuno would find nazuna so cute actually... and my hakuno is very much onee-san coded so- she’s naturally very caring but she’d extra look after him methinks! i see that nazuna does his best to encourage and support others and :pleading: hakuno def needs that kind of positivity in that life :,) she’s a tough cookie to crack though, i must warn you on that! would also just like to mention how they’re the same height (160cm) and i’m sorry but another warning: hakuno can be a gremlin and i just think she’d put on heels just to tease him about that sdfghgdh

ritsu: I DIDN’T EXPECT TO SEE SO MANY SIMILARITIES BETWEEN HIM N HAKUNO ACTUALLY... okok but starting off, he likes to tease people to see their reactions and i’m so sorry because again, hakuno is literally so 😐🧍‍♂️ fdsfgdhj her cuter more expressive side shows when you get closer to her!! they’re both very intuitive which is interesting when you take into account their similar traits (i.e. ABANDONMENT ISSUES- yet distance themselves from other in a way ^_T). ritsu gives me cat vibes too so like,, can imagine her lowkey doting on him. if she finds him passed out somewhere, he won't have to worry abt a thing be stronk kuno can carry him to safety ! 💪 they both play the piano too so idk idk i think it’d be neat for them to play something together! also, i’ve mentioned hakuno’s sweet tooth a lot but!! i still have to say it: she’d love to try his sweets okok :pleading:

kaoru: if he tries to flirt with her then good luck kaoru because this girl's denser than a harem protagonist FHDSHD hakuno's 🤨 about flirts though, so i feel like there could be potential for some bit of tension there, but i don't think it'd be anything particularly bad! hakuno would definitely understand and relate to his want for validation and i feel like she'd be able to see more to him than just a "playboy" kind of image :thonk: i see that he gets along with the "eccentric" types anddd hakuno could def fit right in there lmao - she may look all cute and elegant, but she's pretty quirky chaotic! it'd be sweet for them to slowly befriend and open up to each other methinks :pleading:

Anya Nion's bio

Anya is my Dragon Ball Z: Saiyan Saga roleplay Saiyan character. She’s a young girl with short dark brown hair which has the illusion of having layers. Her hair was once a bowl cut during her training sessions 3 years before the beginning of DBZ. Her most important part of her story takes place months before Raditz’s arrival and during the Kakarot game. She was sent to Earth for a spy mission to find Goku before Raditz or the bounty hunter Spike would. She was sent to work with the Turnip Force, which are Saiyans who still believe in the old Saiyan beliefs of obliterating planets, wiping out locals, and selling the planets to buyers all across the galaxy. Although Anya and her Saiyan partner Leek don’t believe in the Saiyan ways of old, they were sent to work with the Turnip Force to get money and to find out the new plans of the Turnip Force. Although Leek hasn’t confirmed that she’s not with the Force, she tries to hide any form of betrayal, unlike Anya, who made it clear once she arrived on planet Earth. Once she arrived, she cut off her tail and bought human clothes to appear more humanlike. Her typical attire includes black shorts and a baggy World Martial Arts Tournament shirt with the number 86 on the back and a red bandanna. She was the first Saiyan to actually meet Goku, but when she did, she didn’t mention or indicate anything related to Saiyans and the plan to make him join Raditz. She became a good friend of Goku’s and whenever her tail grew back, she either cut it secretly or hid it with clothing. Anya is 6 years older than Gohan and trained with King Kai during the Namek Saga. She was taken to the Other World by the Namekian girl Daiyo, who was one of Kami’s assistants and became the next Guardian of the Earth until Kami-Sama gets revived. Daiyo became a good friend of Anya and the 2 became inseparable. Just like Goku, Anya has an extreme fear of needles, even though she is a skilled warrior. The reason why I created Anya was to be a character for my DBZ prequel fanfic in which I don’t know when to start.

Notes

The number 86 on the back of her shirt is a reference to the release year of Dragon Ball, 1986

Anya Nion’s name is a wordplay on the word onion

Her appearance is based on Gohan, Pan, and a little bit of Omega

She was born in the Saiyan colony of Akapo.

Anya’s hair is also inspired by Zenitsu Agatsuma’s messy hair and Gohan’s bowl cut.

Anya wishes she killed the leader of the Turnip Force, Turnip. One of the ways she wishes to kill her is by sparring her, to prove she’s not a low-class Saiyan Warrior. Another way is by turning into a Great Ape or Full Awakening form, which is my own Saiyan transformation in which the transformed Saiyan gains increased strength, red eyes, slit pupils, spiked up dark crimson hair, an obsession for revenge, long and sharp nails, sharp teeth, and improved versions of the Saiyan’s already existing attacks. The way a Saiyan fully awakens is on a red moon or a red Blutz Wave.

Yugi adopting Jaden part three

Yugi takes Joey inside. The two head upstairs where Yugi finds Jaden working in his deck. “Jaden can you come here. There’s someone I want you to meet.” Jaden looks up and his whole face lights up.

“You’re Joey Wheeler! You were runner up in Duelist Kingdom and fourth in battle city.” The little boy is so excited as he runs up to Joey.

Joey is thrilled as the little boy inflates his ego. “That’s right but you can call me Uncle Joey! Seeing as your my best friend’s kid.”

Jaden is bouncing with excitement at this point. Talking Joey’s ear off about how cool he is and Joey’s priming like a peacock from all the attention. He looks over Jaden to see the boy’s deck spread out on the ground. “Hey kiddo you want to show me your deck?” Jaden gasps and grabs his hand and drags him over to his deck. Yugi following behind with a soft smile on his face. It’s wonderful to see his best friend and his son getting along so well.

They sit down and Jaden starts telling Joey all about his cards. He talks extensively about his favorite cards the Elemental Heros. They are a new archetype. Currently only five different types of monster cards exist. Jaden had three when Yugi adopted him: Burstinatrix, Avian, and Clayman. Upon arriving at Kame Game shop Grandpa had given Jaden Bubbleman and Sparkman as a welcome home present, instantly endearing himself to the boy. The monsters were low level and besides Sparkman’s 1600 attack and Clayman’s 2000 defense all their stats were pretty low. Yugi had a feeling that Pegasus was testing them out to see if they were popular before adding more support and higher level monsters to the archetype.

But if anyone could understand using low level monsters to support one another, it was Joey. He was ooooing and aaaaing at all the right times and nodding his head along, following Jaden’s excited rambling. He asked questions about strategies and started giving Jaden tips about how to power up and defend his lower level hero’s.

Yugi wished he could let them go for hours but he can’t. He needs to go. “Joey I need to ask you a favor.” Yugi catches both of their attentions easily.

“Sure what is it Yug?” Joey remembered what Yugi had said in their phone call, ‘I need you.’ That’s not the thing you say when you just want to introduce someone to your son.

“I went to see Kaiba today.” Yugi started only to get interrupted by and over excited Jaden.

“Thee Seto Kaiba!” Jaden was so excited. All of Yugi’s friends were so cool.

Yugi smiled warmly at his son’s enthusiasm. “Yes that Kaiba, but he wasn’t there.” Yugi said directing his attention back to Joey.

“So, what did you need him for?” Joey is trying not to feel hurt that Yugi went to Kaiba with a problem before coming to him.

“I-” Yugi paused letting out a big sigh. “Jaden come here, please.” Yugi opened his arms and Jaden quickly moved to hug him and sit in his lap. It was a comfortable position, one they normally sat in after one of Jaden’s nightmares. It made Jaden feel safe, and Yugi knew that. He also just wanted his kid close, considering what he was about to do, it might be a while before he could hold him again.

“I told you about Jaden’s adoption.” Yugi said making eye contact with Joey.

“Yah, ya told me.” Joey nodded his head.

“Well that’s where things start to get weird. I tried to get access to Jaden’s medical file, to see if he was allergic to anything or needed any special care but the file was empty.” Yugi held Jaden close as he felt the little one look up at him. He directed his attention down and smiled reassuringly at the boy.

Joey however had alarm bells going off in his head. This was not right. Something was wrong here, and Yugi knew it. He wasn’t going to say it with Jaden around but both teens knew something had happened. You don’t have an empty medical record for no reason.

“So you went to Kaiba..” Joey prompted Yugi to get them to continue with the conversation. He had a lot of questions he wanted to ask but could see Jaden starting to look uncomfortable and knew now was not the time to ask questions like ‘what do you mean the records were blank?’ Or ‘what other documents were missing?’ Those were questions to ask when little ears weren’t around to hear them.

“To see if he could find the original records.” Yugi drew his attention back to Joey. His hand started to rub circles on Jaden’s back. “But he wasn’t there. Mokuba told me he’s been missing for a month.”

“A month?!” Joey exploded. “Where the f-” Yugi sent Joey a sharp glare, “heck did he go?” Joey asked.

Yugi let out a sigh. Here comes the hard part. “He… he went to duel Atem.” Yugi said closing his eyes and taking a big breath.

“But that’s… that’s crazy!” Joey couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “Atem’s” he paused as he knew this was a hard spot for Yugi, “Atem’s gone. He can’t duel him anymore.”

Yugi let out a low chuckle. “Apparently he can. He built a devise that allows him to travel between dimensions just so he can go duel him.”

“But that’s not a different dimension that’s the-” Joey started to rage when he got cut off by a little voice.

“Who’s Atem?” Jaden asked looking up at Yugi with curious eyes. He could tell the name made Yugi sad, and they said he was gone, but he had to be someone special if Seto Kaiba wanted to duel him and he made Yugi this sad.

Yugi and Joey both looked at Jaden. Yugi expression was both mournful but also so full of love. “Atem was someone very dear to me. We went on many adventures together along with Joey and our other friends, but he...” Yugi pause looking up and blinking away the tears that had formed in his eyes before looking back down at the wide eyed boy in his lap. “He passed away.” How do you explain to someone that Atem was a long dead pharaoh whose spirit shared your body?

“Oh.” Jaden said looking down. “I’m sorry you lost your friend.” He tightened his arms around Yugi giving him a big hug, as Jaden wasn’t sure how else to comfort someone.

Yugi was surprised before his face softened and he returned the tight embrace. What had he done to get such a sweet kid.

“But wait!” Jaden cried pulling back startling both adults. “If he’s dead how is Mr. Kaiba going to duel him?”

Yugi winced at the phrasing but Joey was right there with Jaden. “That’s what I’m asking.”

Yugi let out a huff of breath because he was just as exasperated with Kaiba at this moment. “It’s Kaiba. He built a machine that let him travel to the afterlife to challenge Atem.”

“And he’s not dead?” Joey asked. It was a genuine question.

“No. Mokuba has been monitoring his vitals and he’s still alive. He’s just not coming back. Mokuba’s worried that something’s wrong with the return process.” Yugi explained.

“Or he just hasn’t beat Atem yet and is refusing to leave.” Joey stated. Yugi made eye contact with him as the two nodded. Yep that’s the most likely senario.

“Is.. is this normal for you? Going to different dimensions?” Jaden asked with wide eyes as he looked between the two adults.

Yugi and Joey paused passing a look and a thousand words between each other before Joey shrugged “it’s par for the course when your a world class duelist.” Yugi was about to strangle him.

“Awesome!” Jaden was so excited. Yugi and his friends were like real world super heroes!

Yugi dropped his head to rest his forehead against Jaden’s hair. Offering a silent prayer that his son didn’t get into the same amount of trouble he and his friends got into.

“Anyways. Mokuba asked me to go after him. He has a new way to bring us home, but needs someone to go get Kaiba.” Yugi explained Mokuba’s plan.

“Yug that’s insane.” Joey started to argue. This was a bad idea on so many levels. One what if Mokuba was wrong and Kaiba was dead? What if this killed Yugi? What if it didn’t? Would he see Atem again? Could Yugi handle saying goodbye to Atem again? This was so unfair! How dare Kaiba put his best friend in this position.

“You’re going to the afterlife.” Jaden asked, and they could both hear the slight wobble in his voice. “You’re going to die?”

“No, no, no” Yugi quickly reassured him. Holding his boy close again. “I’m not dying. It’s safe. I wouldn’t go if it wasn’t, I’m not going to leave you. I just need to go help a friend.”

“How do you know it’s safe?” Joey asked watching his best friend comfort his son.

“Joey” Yugi shot him a sharp look as Jaden started to get upset again. But Joey didn’t care.

“No Yug, how do you know it’s safe?” Joey pushed. He wasn’t about to lose his best friend to Kaiba’s arrogance in thinking that he could defy death to get his way. He wasn’t going to let Jaden lose his parent a second time.

“Mokuba has assured me it’s safe.” Yugi reassures both Joey and Jaden, keeping his voice even for Jaden’s sake. “I’ll come back.”

“Well if it’s so safe why don’t I go?” Joey offered. There was no way Yugi was going. Not now. Not when he had Jaden to take care of. Stupid Kaiba, getting himself into impossible scenarios and needing Yugi to bail him out. He probably won’t even say thank you! No, not this time. This time rich boy’s going to have to deal with Joey Wheeler coming to the rescue.

“You can’t.” Yugi stated, calmly taking all the wind out of Joey’s sails. “Mokuba already tried. Only someone with a connection to ancient Egypt can go. Meaning only myself or Kaiba could make the trip and Kaiba’s already there.”

Joey deflates at the news. “That’s just not fair.” He looks up at Yugi, who’s still holding Jaden close, reassuring the little boy. He can see the fear in the four year old’s eyes and he knows there has to be something he can do, or else Yugi won’t have called. He blew out a breath before straightening up and meeting Yugi’s gaze. “Alright, how can I help?” Just because he can’t go with Yugi doesn’t mean he can’t help him.

Yugi seems to relax as soon as Joey asks. “I need you to stay with Jaden. He’s been having awful nightmares and I know they’re tied to the spirit world. I just don’t know why. Jaden doesn’t remember them when he wakes up. It’s one of the many reasons I need to get a hold of his records. But if something is reaching out to him I don’t want to leave him without someone who can protect him. Can you stay with him. I know it’s short notice and I don’t know how long I’ll be gone but-”

“Yug.” Joey cut off his friend’s rambling. “I’ve got him. You don’t have to worry about a thing. There isn’t a spirit in existence that can take down Joey Wheeler! Remember I took on an Egyptian god card.” Yugi remembered, remembered watching Joey get fried by Ra’s power. “I mean it Yug. I’ve got this. I’ll keep Jaden safe while you rescue Kaiba.”

“Are you sure?” It was a big ask after all. Joey had just met Jaden and now he’s being asked to watch the kid for who knows how long. Yugi hated asking this of his friend, but there was no one he trusted more in the world with keeping his son safe than Joey.

“Are you kidding? I get to spend time with my new littlest buddy! We’re going to have a blast. You go be a hero and we’ll be here waiting for you. After all, I got to teach my littlest buddy all my dueling tricks.” Joey was all smiles. He was terrified for his best friend but he also trusted Yugi to know what he was doing. october 30, 2023; 5:11 pm - exciting!

first of all, how is it almost november already? sobrang bilis ng ber months in general i think and before we all know it, 2024 na (sorry for the sudden truth drop)

second, i did more research and im convinced na we wont have a hard time with communication in taiwan kasi according to the videos i saw, the locals are actually really nice and that makes me even more excited to explore their country

this week is gonna fly by so fast

kasi tomorrow i doubt na we're gonna get a lot of work done since 1.) its halloween and 2.) i feel like ang dami nang naka long weekend leave by tomorrow so i feel like we wont have alot of people to talk to either way

i have to pack tonight kasi magooffice pa ko tomorrow which means for sure late ako makakauwi

but i do plan on going home earlier para naman i can prep for our trip properly and not be super tired on the 1st of nov

today went by super slowly except nung morning where i voted and i was out of our village's clubhouse in like 15 minutes pero the rest of the day went on so slowly feel ko dahil sa init tapos wala kaming ginagawa ng kapatid ko

so i ended up deep cleaning my phone's look and organizing my apps and i love it so much

I just need to get these ideas outta my head before I lose it (tagging @healterskeltergirl cause she is amazing and normally listens to my rambles in Discord DMs about ideas I hyper fixate on).

ATLA Prince Zuko/OC fic idea with Zuko turning good at the end of season 1...

OC if reborn from our world into ATLA, but isn't "aware" until she's 5 (it don't matter anyways, cause she "wakes up" when she's 5 in the ATLA world). Classified as an "Old Soul" by the Islanders that raise her.

Ends up as a waterbender. Why? Cause 1) why not? And 2) I want her to be a surfer from her first life.

Her first life as a surfer overlaps heavily with her new life that bits and pieces of the Avatar world gets lost, very few things stick. "Water Tribe? North Pole. Princess Yue. Moon... Koi fish? Fire Nation? Kuzon! Dragons dancing. Earth Kingdom? Bumi! Ba Sing Se... Someone with a name rhyming with Tough?"

Knows random shit and says it and no one really understands until later.

Chieftain of Kame Island.

Turtles everywhere... Yes, even turtle ducks. Very turtle friendly.

Magic Island. Only very few people can find it.

Firebenders, earthbenders and waterbenders live in harmony on Kame Island.

Very removed from the war.

OC is originally from Hawaii and a Lilo and Stitch fan.

Ends up Talk no Jutsu-ing Zuko during the North Pole raid.

Zuko actually stumbles upon Kame Island while searching for the Avatar before Kiyoshi island.

He and the crew stay there for a bit, and Zuko is befuddled by their culture and OC saying "Ohana".

Zuko finds out people from the three surviving nations are living in harmony on the island with the OC as their young leader and he's having a minor crisis.

Sees everyone work together to take down a large pirate ship that was dumping oil in Kame Island's waters (pirates did not make it... OC lives by the 3 strikes rule).

They end up saving a Sky Bison calf. It gets named Kiki.

OC travels with Zuko until the North Pole shit.

Ends up convincing Zuko that he's better than Ozai and cause he's still the Crown Prince, the navy is technically his to command when not on Fire Nation soil.

Lots of deprogramming brainwashed soldiers.

Zuko uses the painful memory of his father scarring him to win over his people, because Zuko fucking cares for them and he didn't want needless deaths before he got the scar, and he sure as hell doesn't want more now after watching the siege.

White Lotus spreads the story through the colonies and the poverty stricken areas of the Fire Nation that Prince Zuko is for the people and is Very Tired and wants Peace.

Iroh tells Zuko about Avatar Roku.

At one point Iroh introduces himself as Zuko's uncle to OC and she asks on which side. He says his father's side, and without missing a beat she tells Zuko he must've gotten his looks from his mom cause he has a very delicate look to him that is very attractive.

Zuko doesn't know what to do with this, and just points at his scar. The scar gives him a story and character, she says, but the ponytail is a no.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Zuko ends up being a spy for Team Avatar cause he fakes the betrayal during Ba Sing Se... Azula has no idea.

Zuko @ Ozai during the Solar Eclipse: "Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. You've never been my Ohana, because you've always left me behind! Uncle and the Avatar are my Ohana!"

Zuko learns fire dances and fire eating (maybe sword swallowing) from OC.

OC is chaotic and Toph loves her.

Shining Force 2 All HQ Quotes - JP & ENG

Quotes from the first game here

[put this off for a while since i feel there are less mistranslations, the dialogue in this game is mostly just abridged for ROM space reasons I suppose. Still, there’s still interesting things to see. Unfortunately there’s also even more sexual harassment gags than in the previous game, and hitting most of my favorite characters no less. Yay.

To save those characters a bit, I’ve also translated some stuff from a japanese guide book. That guide book sadly doesn’t have much in terms of character trivia and such, it’s more focused on gameplay stats only, but it does give each character a spicy quote or description for flavor (some are very ambiguous on if they’re first or third person, I’ve noted them as such). And if you stick til the end, maybe you’ll even get some words from our great leader as well? Wouldn’t that be a change of pace.

Most screenshots here are mine but I still had to take a few from RRPG as I didn’t finish my JP playthrough. That’s all the rambling I had, let’s jump to it.]

Originally Jaha says 兜の緒を締めよ, which literally means "fasten the straps of your helmet", but is meant as an expression for "be ready/be on your guard" (kinda like "buckle up" i guess, but that's more related to vehicle so it felt weird to use it). He then follows up on the literal meaning by going to fiddle with his helmet before realizing he just tied a cloth to his head instead. Which is, uh, sure a mistake one can make??? It's pretty nonsense and i didn't find an equivalent expression anyway so I took liberties with it. Do I look like I respect canon Jaha anyway.

[As mascot characters often do, Kiwi has a speaking quirk of ending his sentences in kame (turtle). This stuff usually works better in japanese.]

"Neck goes in... in... I'm training... how to dodge... Neck goes in, in, like a turtle..."

The word he uses for retracting his neck is スッポン, an onomatopoeia for things fitting nicely into a hole/entrance. It can also mean softshell turtle though, and I feel it's an intentional double meaning so i added the "like a turtle" to flow into his ending quirk. Literally the only time I'm happy with how I adapted it.

The japanese word for shooting star, 流星, is made up of the kanji for flow/drift/stream and star. As far as I know any wordplay with "shooting" happening here is purely accidental and I love it.

This one is another reason I decided to bring up the guide book in this post. I find it curious that his active quote is one of the few changed in the english version for no discernible reason and happens to match the guide book quote. Obviously both are referencing his attack animation and thus could be a coincidence, but it’s still curious.

Finale rewatch liveblogging!

On the one hand, Hop is CLEARLY hurt in multiple places. On the other, he deserves to be [redacted]

ARGYLE BADASSERY! I love that even the first time around, I knew exactly what he was thinking and then I thought, “SEE! Without Argyle, they couldn’t have gotten this far!” I mean obviously with the van, but this resource too! They’ve had other people freak out in the beginning- THEY freaked out in the beginning!!! And they need to stop taking Argyle for granted!!!! Also Argyle being smart AF and knowing that Jane needs fuel for her to fight!? Amazing incredible showstopping-! And for providing some lightheartedness that Jane BADLY NEEDS to help give her a break from the awful, awful way she’s been treated for so long- pretty much her entire life, really.

The most believable moment in this entire series is a child getting a lego stuck up his nose and his caretaker being both confused and panicked about how it got up there and how to take it out.And then using tweezers to get it out, which is considered surgery. Evidence: my sister got a tiny jingle bell stuck up her nose when she was 4, and they had to call my mom (who was teaching another grade just down the hallway) to get the jingle bell out because my sister’s teacher was not legally allowed to do it.

JONATHAN REAFFIRMING THAT HE LOVES WILL AND THAT HE’S GONNA LOVE WILL NO MATTER WHAT!!!! THAT HE IS A SAFE PERSON FOR WILL TO CONFIDE TO!!!!! I LOVE HIM I LOVE THEM THEIR FAMILY IS SO GOOD!!!!!!

Confession: The first time I watched this, I hadn’t seen the previous seasons since those had aired. I had COMPLETELY forgotten that Max was in s2 AT ALL XD But they were so little in the flashbacks!!! They’re all so frickin’ cute! It’s wild to have watched these kids grow up on screen. I don’t follow most of their real life stuff- that’s not my business. I always send my well-wishes to child stars because I have heard the horrors so many of them grow up with and encounter when they’re no longer little and cute.

I still don’t understand the significance of the skateboarding scene??? but I’m curious if they’ll bring it up again in s5.

I’ve skipped most of Eddie’s scenes simply because he never meets Jane (horrible, he should have met Jane and especially Will!!!!) but I had to watch the guitar scene bc it is EPIC and I love Eddie and Eddie’s skills being recognized!!! also him being happy for once 😭

Completely unrelated to all of this, but I’ve had The Neverending Story song stuck in my head since I started my rewatch. It may end up on my top Spotify playlist, so what? XD
