Part 5 of Yugi raising Jaden
Start - previous - next
Mokuba had been kind enough to send them a car to come and pick them up. The drive was far shorter than the walk would have been. The three sat in relative silence on the way over. All thinking about what was to come once they reach Kaiba Corp.
The building was impressive. Jaden had never seen a building that tall and now he, Yugi, and Joey were going to head inside. But only he and Joey were going to leave.
Jaden didn’t want to admit the anxiety he was feeling. He’d already been abandoned by one set of parents. He knew Yugi wasn’t leaving forever. He had promised, even giving Jaden one of his cards so that Jaden knew he was coming back. But that didn’t mean Jaden wanted him to go in the first place.
When they arrived at the building Joey hopped out of the car with ease. Yugi moved to follow him, planning to help Jaden out once he was outside the car, when a little hand stopped him. He turned to see Jaden who now had a death grip on his shirt.
“Hey bud.” Yugi kept his voice soft. “Want me to pick you up?” Jaden gave a stiff nod, but it was all the confirmation that Yugi needed. He leaned forward and scooped up the little boy, carefully shuffling them both out of the car.
He could hear the driver radioing to Mokuba that they had arrived. He couldn’t hear Mokuba’s reply but the driver told them to head inside and that the younger Mr. Kaiba would meet them soon.
Yugi lead the way inside. Jaden was clinging to him, his little arms and legs wrapped tightly around Yugi’s neck and waist. His face buried into the crook of Yugi’s neck. And Yugi wished he didn’t have to leave him. His boy was scared. Jaden wouldn’t admit it but Yugi could tell he was scaring his son. But Kaiba needs to return, Mokuba needed his big brother, and Yugi needed answers about Jaden’s past. There was no way he couldn’t go. But the fear his little one was experiencing made him wish there was another way.
“Yugi you’re here! Are you ready to- oh.” Mokuba came running towards them. His excitement to get his brother back clear in his voice, but he cut himself off when he got a good look at them. At Jaden clinging to Yugi like a koala.
“Hey Mokuba. I’d like you to meet Jaden.” Yugi greeted their younger friend before turning his attention to the little boy in his arms. “Jaden,” he gently coaxed the boy to raise his head. “This is my friend Mokuba Kaiba.”
Jaden turned his attention to the 12 year old standing in front of them. Mokuba looked at the kid with a bit of awe. It was weird to see Yugi as a father. Not a bad thing, but Mokuba had lost his parent when he was so young, and Gozaburo was anything but fatherly. So Mokuba didn’t have any real ruler to measure fatherhood by. He was practically raised by Seto. But watching as Yugi gently introduced his son to him. As he coaxed him out of hiding and got the boy to smile and laugh, every movement was gentle and kind, as Yugi always was. It made him have a weird feeling in his stomach.
“Uh It’s nice to meet you.” Mokuba remembered his manners just in time to greet the now waving little boy. “Yugi are you ready to go?” He wanted to get this conversation back on track.
“I am. Jaden is going to stay with Joey.” Yugi explained nodding his head towards Joey who shot Mokuba a little two finger salute.
“Hey Mokuba.” He greeted casually.
“Hey Joey.” Mokuba returned the greeting but his eyes quickly tracked back to the little boy in Yugi’s arms. He had to be about the same age Mokuba was when he was adopted by Gozaburo. Mokuba couldn’t imagine going through that without Seto. But seeing how Jaden clung to Yugi the same way Mokuba used to cling to Seto, before Gozaburo worked his teachings into Seto’s heart, it made him realize something.
Yugi was Jaden’s Seto, Jaden’s protector. Mokuba was 12 years old and he still hated when Seto left him for to long a time period, one of the many reasons he was so desperate to bring Seto home, be he knows he was even worse when he was younger. Now he’s the one asking Jaden’s protector to abandon him. How was that fair? But no one else could go after Seto. There had to be something he could do to make this easier on the kid.
“They can stay here.” Mokuba practically shouted at them, taking Yugi and Joey back. Mokuba quickly realized what he had done and tried to regain control of himself. “Like we talked about earlier Jaden and Joey can stay here with me. That way they can get updates on your progress.” This way Jaden could know his protector was safe, and that he was coming home.
Yugi seemed to understand what Mokuba was offering. Mokuba wouldn’t put it past Yugi to know exactly why he was offering it to, he was just that good at reading people. Especially the Kaiba brothers. Yugi’s face softened. “That would be great Mokuba.” He replied before pivoting to Joey, “if it’s alright with you.”
“You kidding. We get to keep an eye on you and live off of rich-boy dime? Sign me up.” Joey was always great at keeping the mood light. While he would never pass up the opportunity to mess with Kaiba, he knew having a tab on Yugi would greatly decrease his own anxiety about the whole thing. And he was sure that it would help Jaden to.
“Then it’s settled. You to can stay with me until Yugi gets back. Now let’s head up.” Mokuba lead them to the elevator that took them to the top floor of the building, that is where the base of Kaiba’s devise lay.
The whole way up his eyes kept traveling to Yugi and Jaden. Yugi was quietly talking to the boy. Telling him stories about his other trips to Kaiba Corp, or just reassuring him that all would be well. And suddenly that funny feeling was back in Mokuba’s stomach.
It wasn’t until Jaden laughed at something that Yugi said, the two smiling softly at each other that Mokuba put together what he was feeling. He was jealous. Yugi had only had Jaden for a short time but he was already taking to the role of his father. He was kind and reassuring. Just in the short time that Mokuba had known about Jaden he could tell that Yugi already put the boy ahead of everything, as his only hesitation in chasing after Seto had been his concern for Jaden.
It made Mokuba wonder what it would have been like to grow up with such a comforting presence. He wondered how his life would have been different. How Seto would have been different, if they had ended up with a man like Yugi rather than a man like Gozaburo. Would Seto smile more? Would he still call him Moky? Mokuba loved his brother, and knew he worked hard for them to have the lives they did, but sometimes he couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened if they had stayed at that orphanage. And now watching Yugi and Jaden, he can’t help but wonder about what would have happened if someone like Yugi adopted them.
“You okay Mokuba?” Yugi asked drawing Mokuba back to the present. He looked up to see all three boys staring at him with varying degrees of worry.
“Yah, why?” Mokuba tried to shake it off. He was fine after all.
“Um, cause we’re at the top dude.” Joey said pointing to the open elevator doors. Mokuba’s cheeks burned. Oh he had really zoned out there huh.
“Mokuba it’s okay if you’re worried about Kaiba. We understand.” Yugi tried to reassure him, but Mokuba shook it off.
“There’s nothing to worry about.” That’s a lie. Why would he have dragged Yugi into this if he wasn’t worried, but Mokuba had been more concerned with covering up why he had zoned out. Now that the words have left his mouth though he realized how dumb they sounded and-
“You’re right.” Jaden spoke with confidence. “Yugi’s going to bring Mr. Kaiba back so there’s nothing to worry about, because Yugi always comes back to me.”
And Mokuba remembers having that level of confidence in Seto. He had that confidence in Seto when he left, but it’s been a month now… no Jaden was right. They were coming back. Yugi would bring Seto back. Because Yugi always comes back for Jaden and Seto always comes back for Mokuba.
“You’re right Jaden. Yugi will bring Seto back no problem.” Mokuba agreed. Yugi had never let Mokuba down. He wouldn’t start now, not with his own son’s faith in the line.
Mokuba turned and lead them towards the machine that would take Yugi to another dimension, to the afterlife.
Yugi was starting to get nervous. Having Jaden and Mokuba’s unwavering faith was nice. He just hoped he could live up to it.
Mokuba walked over to a machine on the side of the room and picked up a bracelet like thing. “Here Yugi hold out your wrist.” He called as he walked back over to them. Yugi balanced Jaden on his hip and held out his dominant hand (the one his duel disk wasn’t strapped to). Mokuba clasped the devise around his wrist and the thing lit up with a soft purple glow. “This will keep track of your vitals while you’re in the other dimension.” Mokuba explained.
Yugi nodded along understand the importance of such a device. He then watched as Mokuba made his way to the center of the room. A pod like devices sat in the center, it had a triangular shape with the point coming to the front and widening as it went back. The top had a dome like structure and he could see a chair inside of the contraption. Mokuba clicked a button and the machine opened up, the top separating from the bottom in front and raising up like a clam shell would.
“This is the how you’ll get to the other dimension. Once you’re inside we’ll start the sequence to send you after Seto.” Mokuba explained.
“So I guess this is it then?” Joey said as he walked over to Yugi and laid a hand on his shoulder. “Be careful out there.”
Yugi smiled brightly back at his friend. “When am I not?”
Joey chuckled. “I mean it Yug. I won’t be there to watch your back.” He paused then making sure he had his friend’s attention. “Just come back safe, and bring rich boy with you.” he tired to make it light with a joke at the end but his worry was bleeding through.
Yugi smiled warmly at his friend. “I’ll come back. Nothings going to stop me.” He then turned his attention to the little boy in his arms. He could see tears welling up in Jaden’s eyes but the boy wasn’t letting them fall yet. “Hey” he called to bring the boys attention to him. “I’m coming back. This isn’t ‘goodbye,’ it’s ‘I’ll see you soon.’ I promise.”
Jaden gave a shaky nod and a weak smile. “Okay.”
Yugi reach his free hand up and tangled it into Jaden’s hair, bring the little one’s forehead close and pressing a kiss to it. “I love you, Jaden. I’ll be back soon.”
Jaden wrapped his arms tightly around Yugi’s neck giving him one final hug. “I love you to.”
Joey moved to stand next to Yugi. With a little prompting Yugi got Jaden to release his grip and move over to Joey’s open arms. Joey propped Jaden on to his hip and shot a big smile at the boy and then at Yugi.
“You’ve got this Yug! We’ll be here waiting when you come back.” Joey cheered as he did a fist pump with his free hand. Then he turned his attention to Jaden, “right littlest buddy?” He said it with a confident smile and a warm tone encouraging Jaden.
The little boy followed his lead sending a big smile Yugi’s way and a little cheer. “Yep! Yugi always comes back.”
Yugi smiled back and moved to take his seat in the devise.
“Alright, we need to get to the control room.” Mokuba called leading Joey and Jaden away. Leaving Yugi alone for a moment while they got everything into position. His hand found its way to his deck, his fingers dancing over the lid as he sent a silent plea for strength and protection to his cards. He could feel their spirits rising to meet him, offering comfort and support. He could do this. He’d get there, find Kaiba, and come home.
“Yugi can you hear me?” He heard Mokuba call over the loud speakers. He looked up and he could see a glass panel on one of the walls that lead to the control room. He could see Mokuba standing next to the glass with Joey and Jaden next to him. Joey was pointing down at the pod and talking to Jaden, before he and the boy both waved to Yugi.
He smiled up at them and waved back. “I can hear you Mokuba.”
“Good. The pod is going to launch you up into the other dimension. Once you’re there a dimensional clone of the pod will stay where you landed. You need to find Seto and his pod. Once you do, get him into his pod and hit the return button, it’s the green one on the right.” Yugi looked over and saw a bright green button on the right of his pod. Thankfully it was the only green button there. “Once Seto is back you can head back to your pod. Just be carful if the pod gets destroyed I don’t have another way to bring you back.”
Yugi could hear the sound of a raised voice but couldn’t hear what they were saying. Looking up though he could see Joey looking at Mokuba and talking very animatedly, so he guessed that Joey was making his displeasure at that news known. “I understand.” He called to get them back on track. “Any time limit I need to worry about?”
“Nope. Just get home soon.” Mokuba responded over the noise on the other line.
“Got it. Well I’m off then. See you guys soon.” Yugi put as much confidence into his voice as he could, wanting to calm both Joey and Jaden’s nerves.
The pod lid closed down around him. He could hear the count down and then suddenly he was thrusted upwards. The glass lid of the pod allowed him to see what looked like space rushing by him at an incredible speed. The force knocking him back into his chair and he had to appreciate Kaiba’s decision to have the chair in a laid back position or else this pressure would be unbearable.
Then just as quickly as it started it ended. The scene in front of his pod was that of a beautiful blue sky. He opened up the pod and looked around and was hit with some serious déjà vu as the desert sand and scenery reminded him of the memory world. He could see a city and palace not far from him and had a feeling deep in his chest, one he almost forgot how it felt, that Atem was there.
He was going to see Atem again.

Judai's walking toward Chazz when he trips! He catches himself pretty quickly. "I guess I'm falling for you." he grins and snickers. Though after a moment he sobers up.
"Chazz, we've.. Been together for awhile.. and I know we've been apart for three years. But I don't... Want to be apart from you again. I know- we could... Just... Promise to stick together through thick and thin but I wanted to make it official.. As cheesy as that sounds." he rubs his arm and gets down on one knee, holding out a ring box. "I'm not traditional by any means, and I dont... want to claim to be. But would you marry me today if I asked you? Would that be too far?"

"Judai.." He gave the other a warm honest smile even though he had went to catch him before the fall. Glad he wasn't hurt. He fell silent listening carefully arms shifting to his sides until his love was kneeling down. He knows what's next... he hopes what's next is real.
"It... hurt, i need you to know this Judai before anything. I can't remember why or how it happened but... but i missed you so much for three years - i questioned and started giving up. Not on us but on myself..." He sighed.
"But now you're back and truthfully. You stolen my heart again. By being you. So no it wouldn't be to soon or anything bad if you asked...." His hands went to cover his face then a blush spreading easily. So much emotion at once. His shoulder started to shake - he was crying but damn he had to give an answer.
"Ye-yes. I'll marry you."

Round 1: Poll 2
Propaganda under the cut
Pairing 1: Fusionshipping (Marufuji Ryou | Zane Truesdale/Yuuki Juudai | Jaden Yuki)
Propaganda: i love shipping judai with anyone else, including this ship, but it was however overshadowed by gx rivalshipping which was used to be my all time favorite. looking back to the gx fandom after my main hyperfixation (which was erm… yugioh gx) was replaced by smg4 last year, i want to move on from that popular ship and become a fusionshipper instead.
Pairing 2: Tomorrowshipping(Tenjouin Asuka | Alexis Rhodes/Jim Crocodile Cook)
Propaganda: They complete each other! Jim’s focus on the past vs Asuka’s focus on the future, Jim’s nature theming vs Asuka’s technology theming, the way their attitudes complement one another. Not to mention “Tomorrow Girl,” the cutest nickname in the world.
Now, let’s keep things civil. This is a silly poll where we can share why we love our overlooked ships. There’s no need to be nasty to prove your point.  Bashers will be consumed by darkness.

Rivalshipping where both Seto and Yuugi learn to move on from their grief over Atem and not use each other for it.
Rivalshipping where Seto learns and appreciates Yuugi for who he is, not who it reminds him of.
Rivalshipping where they learn to care, support, and love each other because after seeing other stories in other fandoms actually portray being loved actually appealing, I’m all for it now too.
Rivalshipping where they’re portrayed in their best light, Yuugi’s kindness, Seto’s determination to focus on the future, to build their relationship.

key differences between Atem/kaiba and Yugi/kaiba dynamic?
omg catnip to my ears. nose. whatever. Rivalshipping is the simple but reliable coffee I drink every morning and Prideshipping is the cocktail i carefully mix for myself every evening with fresh-squeezed lemons and homemade simple syrup
i'm going to talk about this more based on the manga and the sub because i forgot everything about the dub but ANYWAY
to me, Atem/Kaiba is a dynamic built around challenging the other - both of these guys live their lives firmly entrenched in their positions and they spend a lot of time assessing each other and themselves compared to the other: "i challenge you to beat me. I challenge you to come back from this. What does it mean that he won? What does he have that I don't? You want to win? I dare you to kill me. Don't you dare give up! IF GOD GETS IN YOUR WAY THEN MOW HIM DOWN. I challenge you to trust me and work with me. what do you think will happen when best friends are forced to fight? Prove me wrong. Don't give up! I believe in our road of battle! I challenge you to keep fighting for your sense of identity. I challenge you to believe in me and believe in the power of our bonds!!"
And SO ON. While it starts dark and violent, by Battle City they've settled into a dynamic of pushing and encouraging and egging each other on to do better, think about things from a new angle, and not give up - a relationship of mutual respect, as competitors and as people striving for better understanding of themselves (Anzu comments on this parallel in Battle City: Atem wants to understand himself through his past and Kaiba by striving for his future).
This aspect of pushing each other, for better or worse, doesn't really exist in the Kaiba/Yuugi dynamic, if only because Kaiba, for most of the series, doesn't really pay attention to Yuugi the way he pays attention to Atem. In both Battle City and Yugioh R he refers to Yuugi as "the weaker one," and his most iconic over-the-top lines are referring to Atem (I tremble with desire, dueling you makes my heart beat faster, etc.) However, Yuugi IS paying attention to Kaiba - he visits him in the hospital post Death-T, he wants to duel him fair and square, he wants Kaiba to beat Pegasus in Duelist Kingdom. It's only in Dark Side of Dimensions that Kaiba really starts to see Yuugi as something more than "the vessel"/the weaker one - as someone who has grown, a competitor in his own right, who can push back on his own where he used to rely on Atem to do it (a little fucked that winning card games is what makes Kaiba respect someone, but Kaiba is a little fucked.)
As much as I love the Yuugi + Kaiba relationship (and I do), there is simply less of it in the text than Atem + Kaiba. HOWEVER: this is not really a problem for me because what DOES exist is quite interesting to me. They're Schopenhauer's hedgehogs: Yuugi would rather get closer to people and risk the pains of intimacy while Kaiba would rather keep his distance and stay out in the emotional/psychological cold. They're both fundamentally lonely people who try to connect with others through games. KT's art of them playing games in Kaiba's space station post-DSOD really cuts to the core of why this relationship appeals to me so much - they're having s good time playing games together! They're MAKING those games together!! They're cut from the same cloth!! it just takes a long time for them to be able to see that in each other (Kaiba because he's just not thinking about Yuugi, and Yuugi because he has a lot of sympathy for Kaiba but doesn't always understand him.)
Atem and Kaiba is a high energy and dramatic relationship, a dynamic where they want to see the other person succeed and never give up on what they're fighting for, where Yuugi and Kaiba is a much slower burn, a dynamic where it takes a long time for true mutual recognition of the other, but once it happens it's strong.
ANYWAY in sum this is one of my favorite ways to describe the differences:
In a post-canon rivalshipping scenario, Yuugi is out with his friends at Burger World but gets a text from Kaiba to come over and hang out/make out, so he leaves. Everyone boos.
In a post-canon prideshipping scenario, Atem successfully convinces Kaiba to come to Burger World with everyone, but leaves with him (to make out) when he's reached the end of his social battery and dips. Everyone boos.

Yugi adopting Jaden part three
Start - previous - next
Yugi takes Joey inside. The two head upstairs where Yugi finds Jaden working in his deck. “Jaden can you come here. There’s someone I want you to meet.” Jaden looks up and his whole face lights up.
“You’re Joey Wheeler! You were runner up in Duelist Kingdom and fourth in battle city.” The little boy is so excited as he runs up to Joey.
Joey is thrilled as the little boy inflates his ego. “That’s right but you can call me Uncle Joey! Seeing as your my best friend’s kid.”
Jaden is bouncing with excitement at this point. Talking Joey’s ear off about how cool he is and Joey’s priming like a peacock from all the attention. He looks over Jaden to see the boy’s deck spread out on the ground. “Hey kiddo you want to show me your deck?” Jaden gasps and grabs his hand and drags him over to his deck. Yugi following behind with a soft smile on his face. It’s wonderful to see his best friend and his son getting along so well.
They sit down and Jaden starts telling Joey all about his cards. He talks extensively about his favorite cards the Elemental Heros. They are a new archetype. Currently only five different types of monster cards exist. Jaden had three when Yugi adopted him: Burstinatrix, Avian, and Clayman. Upon arriving at Kame Game shop Grandpa had given Jaden Bubbleman and Sparkman as a welcome home present, instantly endearing himself to the boy. The monsters were low level and besides Sparkman’s 1600 attack and Clayman’s 2000 defense all their stats were pretty low. Yugi had a feeling that Pegasus was testing them out to see if they were popular before adding more support and higher level monsters to the archetype.
But if anyone could understand using low level monsters to support one another, it was Joey. He was ooooing and aaaaing at all the right times and nodding his head along, following Jaden’s excited rambling. He asked questions about strategies and started giving Jaden tips about how to power up and defend his lower level hero’s.
Yugi wished he could let them go for hours but he can’t. He needs to go. “Joey I need to ask you a favor.” Yugi catches both of their attentions easily.
“Sure what is it Yug?” Joey remembered what Yugi had said in their phone call, ‘I need you.’ That’s not the thing you say when you just want to introduce someone to your son.
“I went to see Kaiba today.” Yugi started only to get interrupted by and over excited Jaden.
“Thee Seto Kaiba!” Jaden was so excited. All of Yugi’s friends were so cool.
Yugi smiled warmly at his son’s enthusiasm. “Yes that Kaiba, but he wasn’t there.” Yugi said directing his attention back to Joey.
“So, what did you need him for?” Joey is trying not to feel hurt that Yugi went to Kaiba with a problem before coming to him.
“I-” Yugi paused letting out a big sigh. “Jaden come here, please.” Yugi opened his arms and Jaden quickly moved to hug him and sit in his lap. It was a comfortable position, one they normally sat in after one of Jaden’s nightmares. It made Jaden feel safe, and Yugi knew that. He also just wanted his kid close, considering what he was about to do, it might be a while before he could hold him again.
“I told you about Jaden’s adoption.” Yugi said making eye contact with Joey.
“Yah, ya told me.” Joey nodded his head.
“Well that’s where things start to get weird. I tried to get access to Jaden’s medical file, to see if he was allergic to anything or needed any special care but the file was empty.” Yugi held Jaden close as he felt the little one look up at him. He directed his attention down and smiled reassuringly at the boy.
Joey however had alarm bells going off in his head. This was not right. Something was wrong here, and Yugi knew it. He wasn’t going to say it with Jaden around but both teens knew something had happened. You don’t have an empty medical record for no reason.
“So you went to Kaiba..” Joey prompted Yugi to get them to continue with the conversation. He had a lot of questions he wanted to ask but could see Jaden starting to look uncomfortable and knew now was not the time to ask questions like ‘what do you mean the records were blank?’ Or ‘what other documents were missing?’ Those were questions to ask when little ears weren’t around to hear them.
“To see if he could find the original records.” Yugi drew his attention back to Joey. His hand started to rub circles on Jaden’s back. “But he wasn’t there. Mokuba told me he’s been missing for a month.”
“A month?!” Joey exploded. “Where the f-” Yugi sent Joey a sharp glare, “heck did he go?” Joey asked.
Yugi let out a sigh. Here comes the hard part. “He… he went to duel Atem.” Yugi said closing his eyes and taking a big breath.
“But that’s… that’s crazy!” Joey couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “Atem’s” he paused as he knew this was a hard spot for Yugi, “Atem’s gone. He can’t duel him anymore.”
Yugi let out a low chuckle. “Apparently he can. He built a devise that allows him to travel between dimensions just so he can go duel him.”
“But that’s not a different dimension that’s the-” Joey started to rage when he got cut off by a little voice.
“Who’s Atem?” Jaden asked looking up at Yugi with curious eyes. He could tell the name made Yugi sad, and they said he was gone, but he had to be someone special if Seto Kaiba wanted to duel him and he made Yugi this sad.
Yugi and Joey both looked at Jaden. Yugi expression was both mournful but also so full of love. “Atem was someone very dear to me. We went on many adventures together along with Joey and our other friends, but he...” Yugi pause looking up and blinking away the tears that had formed in his eyes before looking back down at the wide eyed boy in his lap. “He passed away.” How do you explain to someone that Atem was a long dead pharaoh whose spirit shared your body?
“Oh.” Jaden said looking down. “I’m sorry you lost your friend.” He tightened his arms around Yugi giving him a big hug, as Jaden wasn’t sure how else to comfort someone.
Yugi was surprised before his face softened and he returned the tight embrace. What had he done to get such a sweet kid.
“But wait!” Jaden cried pulling back startling both adults. “If he’s dead how is Mr. Kaiba going to duel him?”
Yugi winced at the phrasing but Joey was right there with Jaden. “That’s what I’m asking.”
Yugi let out a huff of breath because he was just as exasperated with Kaiba at this moment. “It’s Kaiba. He built a machine that let him travel to the afterlife to challenge Atem.”
“And he’s not dead?” Joey asked. It was a genuine question.
“No. Mokuba has been monitoring his vitals and he’s still alive. He’s just not coming back. Mokuba’s worried that something’s wrong with the return process.” Yugi explained.
“Or he just hasn’t beat Atem yet and is refusing to leave.” Joey stated. Yugi made eye contact with him as the two nodded. Yep that’s the most likely senario.
“Is.. is this normal for you? Going to different dimensions?” Jaden asked with wide eyes as he looked between the two adults.
Yugi and Joey paused passing a look and a thousand words between each other before Joey shrugged “it’s par for the course when your a world class duelist.” Yugi was about to strangle him.
“Awesome!” Jaden was so excited. Yugi and his friends were like real world super heroes!
Yugi dropped his head to rest his forehead against Jaden’s hair. Offering a silent prayer that his son didn’t get into the same amount of trouble he and his friends got into.
“Anyways. Mokuba asked me to go after him. He has a new way to bring us home, but needs someone to go get Kaiba.” Yugi explained Mokuba’s plan.
“Yug that’s insane.” Joey started to argue. This was a bad idea on so many levels. One what if Mokuba was wrong and Kaiba was dead? What if this killed Yugi? What if it didn’t? Would he see Atem again? Could Yugi handle saying goodbye to Atem again? This was so unfair! How dare Kaiba put his best friend in this position.
“You’re going to the afterlife.” Jaden asked, and they could both hear the slight wobble in his voice. “You’re going to die?”
“No, no, no” Yugi quickly reassured him. Holding his boy close again. “I’m not dying. It’s safe. I wouldn’t go if it wasn’t, I’m not going to leave you. I just need to go help a friend.”
“How do you know it’s safe?” Joey asked watching his best friend comfort his son.
“Joey” Yugi shot him a sharp look as Jaden started to get upset again. But Joey didn’t care.
“No Yug, how do you know it’s safe?” Joey pushed. He wasn’t about to lose his best friend to Kaiba’s arrogance in thinking that he could defy death to get his way. He wasn’t going to let Jaden lose his parent a second time.
“Mokuba has assured me it’s safe.” Yugi reassures both Joey and Jaden, keeping his voice even for Jaden’s sake. “I’ll come back.”
“Well if it’s so safe why don’t I go?” Joey offered. There was no way Yugi was going. Not now. Not when he had Jaden to take care of. Stupid Kaiba, getting himself into impossible scenarios and needing Yugi to bail him out. He probably won’t even say thank you! No, not this time. This time rich boy’s going to have to deal with Joey Wheeler coming to the rescue.
“You can’t.” Yugi stated, calmly taking all the wind out of Joey’s sails. “Mokuba already tried. Only someone with a connection to ancient Egypt can go. Meaning only myself or Kaiba could make the trip and Kaiba’s already there.”
Joey deflates at the news. “That’s just not fair.” He looks up at Yugi, who’s still holding Jaden close, reassuring the little boy. He can see the fear in the four year old’s eyes and he knows there has to be something he can do, or else Yugi won’t have called. He blew out a breath before straightening up and meeting Yugi’s gaze. “Alright, how can I help?” Just because he can’t go with Yugi doesn’t mean he can’t help him.
Yugi seems to relax as soon as Joey asks. “I need you to stay with Jaden. He’s been having awful nightmares and I know they’re tied to the spirit world. I just don’t know why. Jaden doesn’t remember them when he wakes up. It’s one of the many reasons I need to get a hold of his records. But if something is reaching out to him I don’t want to leave him without someone who can protect him. Can you stay with him. I know it’s short notice and I don’t know how long I’ll be gone but-”
“Yug.” Joey cut off his friend’s rambling. “I’ve got him. You don’t have to worry about a thing. There isn’t a spirit in existence that can take down Joey Wheeler! Remember I took on an Egyptian god card.” Yugi remembered, remembered watching Joey get fried by Ra’s power. “I mean it Yug. I’ve got this. I’ll keep Jaden safe while you rescue Kaiba.”
“Are you sure?” It was a big ask after all. Joey had just met Jaden and now he’s being asked to watch the kid for who knows how long. Yugi hated asking this of his friend, but there was no one he trusted more in the world with keeping his son safe than Joey.
“Are you kidding? I get to spend time with my new littlest buddy! We’re going to have a blast. You go be a hero and we’ll be here waiting for you. After all, I got to teach my littlest buddy all my dueling tricks.” Joey was all smiles. He was terrified for his best friend but he also trusted Yugi to know what he was doing. Plus there was no way he was going to put any more doubts in Jaden’s head. His dad was coming home. There were no other options. Besides, he was genuinely excited to hang out with the kid.
“Thank you Joey.” Yugi softened. Joey really was the greatest friend he could ever have.
“No sweat. Now let’s get your deck ready to go, I’ve got a feeling you’ll need it.” Joey stood up. He reach out a hand to help Yugi up. To his surprised Jaden wrapped his arms tight around Yugi forcing Yugi to pick the boy up with him as he stood, holding the boy comfortably on his hip.
Oh wow! His friend really was a dad now!

Note
I know I’ve asked you things for Ennead but have you had to give up any great ideas for Help Me because the plot progressed in a different direction than you originally thought it would?
The whole thing was just meant to be whump for both boys that turned into care when an exhausted Kaiba collapsed in Yugi's arms and they started looking after each other. That's how it started in my brain.
Now Yugi is trapped in another dimension and at serious risk of becoming Zorc’s new puppet and Seto is going to end up [spoiler redacted] Atem for a while and seriously in trouble with everyone.
And I'm like...wtf happened?

seto kiba and/or mokuba kaiba
Well, since Seto's done, Mokuba it is!
Sexuality headcanon: Haven't really thought too deeply about this since he's around 11-12 for most of the series, but probably the one Kaiba who could potentially marry a girl in the future.
Gender headcanon: ... look, that whole princess thing in the Virtual World arc fills me with questions, so I can either go with cis male or trans male, Seto Kaiba would support his little bro no matter what. 8|b
A ship I have with him: Again, he's like 11-12 for most of the series, haven't really thought too deeply about this. Him and Rebecca being little shits together would be amazing, tho'.
A BrOTP I have with him: Again, him and Rebecca would be funny as hell to watch in motion. Also let Mokuba hang out with Noa(h) somehow sometime 2k24, he deserves two messed-up but adoring big brothers.
Bonus round: Crossover BrOTP of him and Chibi Usa, suffer well, Usagi Tsukino.
A NOTP I have with him: Nothing beyond the general "he is baby, there had better be some sort of age up involved in any serious shipping or I'm out"
A random headcanon: Yugi's mom and grandpa, if given an opportunity to get to know him *cough*Rivalshipping*cough* would absolutely adore him and he sucks that sweet, sweet attention up like a sponge, yes, he is baby, love him (even if he is not baby anymore at that point).
General opinion of him: Top tier little shit (affectionate), "I TEACH KNIFE CLASS" lives rent-free in my head regarding him.

To Old Friends, To the Future
Summary: Seto invites Yugi over for dinner again. They had both been quite busy with their own projects as of late but had finally found a moment quiet moment between it all. However, unfortunately, Seto chose a bit of an awkward day on the calendar to do so. But this is good, they get a chance to speak of old friends and feelings.
Words: 2,255
Characters: Seto Kaiba, Yugi Mutou
Tags/warnings: Rivalshipping, Post-DSoD, social drinking, dinner date and talking
There was a bit of a breeze as Seto set the table out on the patio. Mokuba loved using it for dinner, Seto less so. But tonight the weather was nice and he’d invited Yugi over, so he figured it’d be nice to do something different for once.
“I’m back!” was hollered from the entrance.
Yugi kicked his shoes off at the genkan and stepped up into the apartment in one neat motion.
Well, “apartment” was a loose term. Seto and Mokuba owned the unit but it wasn’t its own building. Seto didn’t like waste so they had downsized, but it still cost more than Yugi’s life savings so far!
“Impeccable timing, it’s almost done, you doing this so you can get out of helping?”
He was joking, of course. Yugi how he is always offered to lend a hand. And Yugi knew Seto wasn’t serious even if his tone of voice was flat and as stoic sounding as ever.
“Ah, of course. You know I’m just sooo lazy and like to have you pamper me,” Yugi replies with a snort.
“Smells good, what is it?” he asked stepping up to the stove but quickly moving out of the way as Seto returned to it to make sure their dinner didn’t burn. He’s no expert chef, but he can follow a recipe fine so long as it was written out in detail. Often people assumed he didn’t know how to cook, but in reality Seto had learned at a young age how to do simple meals when helping raise Mokuba within a single-parent household. His skills grew from there.
“Halibut. Fish. You’ve ever tried it?”
“I have in sushi.”
“Well, this is quite different. Go take a seat outside, I’ll be there in a second.”
Yugi did as he was told and noticed a few saké bottles set out on the table.
“Ooh, fancy night,” he teased when Seto brought over their plates. “Sweet or bitter?” he asked as he looked over the labels.

1, 2, 12, 16, 18, 23, and 26 for Yugi and Jonouchi
Hello. I apologize for the delay in answering this. Thank you for the ask.
1. My first impression of them
I tend to not have overt emotional reactions to media, and it takes time for me to be able to pin down my feelings on characters if I do. I probably started out liking Yugi more than Jonouchi just because I personally relate less to extroverts and seemingly jollier characters.
2. When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you’ve sent me a character I don’t like)
I liked Yugi from the start I think. I had also enjoyed Rivalshipping before entering fandom and thought it was a gentle ship pairing a kind and optimistic soul with a gloomy angrier one and there was the hope for understanding.
I was alright with Jonouchi. After entering fandom and properly interacting with other fans, my friend the-cryptographer really helped me to see the depth and nuance within Jonouchi. He’s struggled and been lonely, he wants to be useful, he can be passive-aggressive and sharp-edged, he puts on a front and tries to be strong and cheerful.
12. Sexuality hc!
If I’m honest, I tend to not hold super firm ideas on character’s sexual orientations when it comes to playing in fandom. I can see Yugi and Jonouchi being bisexual and struggling with differing degrees of internalized homophobia. Jonouchi in particular I think would struggle with some internalized homophobia given his personal history and how he tries to seem masculine. Hopefully they can both accept themselves.
16. A childhood headcanon
Jonouchi had to make his own meals a lot from a younger age as his mother was gone and his father wasn’t stepping up. I feel current Jonouchi is decent at cooking because of this.
18. How do you think they were as a kid? (Like, were they shy, noisy, wild, etc)
I think Yugi struggled with shyness and was maybe pulled away from the other kids, preferring to play games alone. I also think he tried to be friendly with those who approached him, though he was also an awkward and quiet kid who maybe wasn’t able to keep them interested and didn’t seek out company too well on his own.
I think Jonouchi was a more energetic child who could act out at times and be rowdy, and would sometimes do attention-seeking things to excite his classmates --- like climbing trees and sneaking into places he wasn’t meant to be as they watched.
23. Future headcanon
Yugi might adopt a cat.
When Sugoroku Mutou’s health begins failing, Yugi won’t reach out for emotional support too well and instead he’ll retreat into an inner world. We had seen that happen with Atem’s fate as well.
26. When do you think they were being “themselves” the most?
I think their friendship with each other and with Anzu and Honda and Atem are their heartlines. I think the times we see them casually playing games together is the answer. The company and playfulness they shared.
