It is a strange feeling... having gone through the "death by a thousand paper cuts" in fandom for trying to enjoy a darker character with abstracted storybeats and whatnot, back when "fandom purity" mindsets were quite lively here, and becoming so worn down it was like pieces of myself were breaking off (I knew I couldn't trust my own feelings on things, and when any time I tried to type out ideas to shape and understand them someone would make passive aggressive posts ripping into those ideas and sometimes me as a person too and it was like I had nothing to hold onto in myself or outside of myself anymore). Now fandom is very "what if two super fucked up people could love each other anyway?" "write that fucked up fanfic idea!" "RB if you support weird dark ass fiction"
And I'm glad for that change, but there's a sort of bitterness settled deep within me a little and I wish I could let it go.
Everyone's been through various crap of course.

the thing about swiss army man is that the world was NOT ready for it in 2016. it's a masterwork of queer cinema. it's about how harmful it is to confuse a sense of disgust for a moral compass. it's about how shame destroys you. it's about how depression feels like dragging a corpse everywhere you go only the body is your own. it's about letting out the things you've been bottling up and finally being able to breathe. it's about learning to love someone else for the very things you hate about yourself until you can love yourself too. it's about queer desire as a literal matter of survival.

It was a "word of god" type of reveal in guidebooks/interviews, in a similar vein to how "word of god" claims the idea was Yugi's father is always away on business.
That's somewhat the purpose of this post I suppose: I understand why Ryo's family status could be very flexible to interpret, and I do feel it's fair to suspect it may have even been something of a retcon that his sister turns out to be deceased, and how fans have the right to say "screw word of god, it's canon to me that his mother and sister are alive because it's not explicit in the actual text." That is fair. As always, it's fiction.
But looping back around to "some very interesting nuances and implications in Ryo," the form of Ryo's disconnection and willingness to disconnect via the Millennium Ring, his kind of suicidality to sacrifice himself in the first monsterworld RPG arc, his preoccupation with occulty things and ghost-themed cards --- these things take on a certain meaning and edge in knowing he lost his mother and sister in childhood. I don't mean to say this behavior can't be relatable in other circumstances but I suppose to me there's something relatable to this portrayal of loneliness and detached vague grief. The letters he writes to his dead sister can be both therapeutic journaling and a form of denial and grief potentially and even a kind of freeze response to trauma, maybe all those things at once. If one includes DSoD in their canon, Ryo being so concerned for his father that he follows him while in turn his father has let himself be consumed and preoccupied with something else as part of escaping grief also has nuance.
I guess for me, I find Ryo more interesting in interpreting it that he did lose his mother and sister in childhood rather than disregarding this particular word of god. *shrugs*
I think it's fair to feel YGO doesn't do the best job conveying that Ryo Bakura lost his mother and sister to death and that it's also very fair to explore ideas where the two are still alive or one is still alive, I do feel that looking at canon with the idea his mother and sister are both still alive strips away some very interesting nuances and implications in Ryo.

I read Shadows of Mindor and I really liked Luke's musings on the Force in the book so I had to draw something. Other doodle under the cut:
