The legend, the greatest of all time, Vincent Tong has answered three questions. After being granted permission, I happily yeet this post into the fandom. I want to note that the questions and answers are copied directly from the Cameo DM. There is no rewording. The more personalized question is hidden below for those who are not interested. Enjoy!

Question: "My first question is what do you think Kai would wear when he's not in his ninja gi? I know during the show we have some outfits Kai wears but as the voice actor, I wanted to ask what is your take on Kai's fashion style?"

Answer: "That’s a good question. Since Kai fancies himself as a ladies man, he is very aware when he’s out and about town. I can see him being very colour coordinated, in red of course, in case anyone isn’t aware he’s the elemental master of Fire 🔥 For casual wear he would rock a red tracksuit with with a sleeveless hoodie, to show off his muscles of course. And if he was to dress up a bit, I could see him wearing a sparkle red suit that would change colour if heated it up by his fire powers!"

Question: "My next question is about the scar on his right eye. My apologies if you have already answered this question before during a Q&A but I am curious. Do you have any takes on how Kai got that scar or why he has that bandage too? Is it another scar? And did Kai always have this scar or did something happen before the events of the Sons of Garmadon season that caused the scars?"

Answer: "My answer to this is kinda lame, cause I actually was never told the origins of the scar. I think it was a design decision to make Kai stand out. But if I had to create a story: He was going pee in the middle of the night and hit head on the bunk bed Nya and him shared as kids. But he would never admit that to anyone. He’d say he got it from defending a poor street dog from other giant bully streets dogs. Kai walked away with a scar but those street dogs walked away with greatest lesson of all: You play with Fi-yah, you’re gonna get burned 🔥🔥"

Question: "My last question right now for you is this. You mentioned before Ariel was your first crush as a kid. If Kai ever met Ariel, what would that interaction look like? What would Kai think of Ariel?"

Answer: "Oooo good question! Well Kai would right away blush so hard seeing Ariel. His hair might even catch fire a bit, cause she’s so pretty! And she would point out that both their hair is red🔥🤭 He would use a cheesy line like ‘Whoa are those fins, cause you’ve been swimming around my mind all day!’ Ariel can’t talk cuz of that mean sea witch, but she would giggle silently at Kai trying so hard to be cool! I think they would prob hang out eating ice cream to help him cool off. He would try to make Ariel laugh and anything she did would just make him blush more ☺️ I think they would make a great pair! 💕💕🧜‍♀️🔥"

So, Kai and Morro. Their similarities are the same amount to their differences.

Before in my Nya and Morro one i said how Kai (and Lloyd) are two of the most different to Morro. I still think that, but i also think they have their similarities.

The biggest similarity between Kai and Morro is how like minded they are when it comes to goals. They both gain one and fulfil it to the end, similarly to Nya. They would do anything to make sure their goal is achieved because not only would it benefit them but it would also benefit others. Impress others. Protect others.

This is driven by their passion as ninja and their need to become better. Their passion is what fuels them to keep going, to stay motivated in what they believe in or wish to achieve. Kai is shown as one of the most passionate people on the show, and Morro is shown to be just as passionate as him, and both their passion ends up not only fuelling them to achieve their goals, but also in their own anger and temper.

Their anger and outbursts tend to be fuelled by the passion backing them up in their opinions and beliefs, and they desperately need to get their points across and do that through their temper as its the easiest method (not the most effective tho). Both Kai and Morro are two individuals who at first had large egos, finding themselves and only the the ones most close to them as important (barely for Morro, the only person he cared for was Wu, who didn’t need any sort of protection or help). However, its shown for both of them that their egos were fragile things, quickly crumbling to bits as their prides took over. Their pride is what makes them so similar, their need to succeed and achieve better for whatever reason, whether it’s to be as strong as possible or whether to finally be important.

But then things tend to differ.

Both Morro and Kai were orphans, dirt poor and unable to gain knowledge like how others their age do. Neither have a home, and neither had parents there to support them until later in life. But Kai had one thing that Morro didn’t, one person that created Kai’s whole purpose and need as a ninja. Someone to protect, some who was under his responsibility, someone like Nya.

Because Kai had Nya, he understood the need to protect and raise others up from the ground, he understood struggles of others and understood that he had to help others. Because of Nya, Kai gained his biggest qualities that developed with the ninja. His sympathy, his empathy, and his heart. He wanted to have the power of protecting, so the people he cared for didn’t need to worry anymore (so they wouldn’t leave him anymore).

Morro didn’t have that, he didn’t have somebody he needed to protect and have responsibility over. He only had himself, and it essentially turned his thought process into (undertale reference) “Kill or be killed” kinda situation. He had never relied on anyone, never needed anyone, and never had anyone need him.

Kai had a purpose, and it was to protect. Morro didn’t have a purpose, so he had a goal to motivate him.

People don’t tend to realise that the most smallest of situations, or words, or actions, can leave so much of an effect on a person. Especially a child.

Their situations were so similar, yet so insignificantly different that no one tends to notice how it drastically changed them as people.

I feel like theres more to add to this, and that i haven’t said my point correctly, but i have school in the morning and i need to sleet so enoughs enough. ALSO: im not comparing their situations as two orphans in a “who had it worse?” Kinda way, both their situations happen irl and shouldn’t be compared in such a way when they each have their own struggles. It was only to analyse how it affected them and the such, please take care of any child you see people they have it rough now a days 😭

Not just for charging and gorging, but head butting as well! I can definitely see an intense grapple, Kai and his opponent locked in a stalemate with hands and weapons. Then Kai smirks and delivers a skull-crushing headbutt that knocks the other guy senseless.

Then he immediately goes over and gives Oogway a very gentle nudge. Makes Oogway that much more grateful that Kai holds some capacity to be gentle- though there was probably an incident where Kai got drunk and meant to give Oogway a gentle little bonk and ended up almost concaving his skull.

I don’t usually like mixing canon with like the real world, but late night post on what IRL nationalities I headcanon the Ninja as:

Lloyd: Japanese American. Specifically Anglican American cause Misako gives off white mom energy.

Kai: Korean Scottish. No good reasons I just like the idea of him being Celtic descendant

Jay: Japanese Australian. Idk if it’s the desert of doom vibes of Australia but Jay also has a kinda free spirited energy that’s stereotypical of Australians.

Zane: Yakut Russian. I think it’s the haircut, definitely could see an AU where Zane escapes the Russian draft /hj

Cole: Filipino African American. I could see an Au with his mother being a dancer and his father being a major 70’s singer songwriter. The fame gets to him sometimes and at school he specifically avoids saying his last name so people don’t recognize it.

Nya: Korean Scottish

Wu: Japanese. I like the idea of Wu being a first generation immigrant to the US and Lloyd being the grandson who’s obsessed with his lineage.

Garmadon: Japanese. Same reason

Harumi: Edo Japanese/ Vietnamese. The Edo Japanese are native to Hokkaido and during the Meiji era when Japan annexed the island the Edo people were treated like second class subhumans to serve the Japanese invaders. I think it fits due to her family being clearly working class in the show.

Morro: Definitely Edo Japanese. He was homeless as a child and I could totally see his family either abandoning him for monetary reasons or him being an orphan in the foster care system.

Time for Kai head canons yall :D (slight lavashipping involved)

Ok so since Kai has the fire element he has a higher body temperature than a normal human, which has it's ups and downs

The good part is, he is able to withstand very low temperatures, like freezing cold does not bother him at all AND he can provide warmth to the others

BUT summers and environments with hot temperatures can be dangerous for him

He could get overheated and the first summer his fire powers were awaken he and the others thought he got really sick, because none of them realized it's because of his element

When they finally realized what was going on they made him at the monastery room underground for the summer, so that he would be in a cold temperature

whenever they have to go on a mission where there is gonna be higher temperatures they always pair up Kai and Zane or at least let them be as close as they can in order for Zane to cool Kai off

Whenever they travel in the bounty the air conditioner is always on and since they all share one room Zane is always close by

Cole will always worry about Kai whenever he's in a hot environment

Cole will always check up on him during summer and missions because the first summer really scared him

Cole will also keep extra bottle of water for Kai whenever they travel

Lloyd wasn't with them the first summer and he found out about Kais issue with high temperatures in a not so good situation

They were on some mission together, but Lloyd sorta forgot to mention it would be really hot

The other issue is that Kai can not feel high temperatures right away, he realizes it's hot only when he starts to get overheated

So when Kai was on the mission with Lloyd, he basically collapsed and wasn't able to continue the mission (good thing it was just an exploration mission)

Lloyd had to call the others and when Kai woke up Lloyd apologized and cried and swore that he didn't know, being knew to the leadership he wasn't very confident and he always worried he would get the others hurt

Kai forgave him ofc he wasn't even angry with him, Kai gets more embarrassed if anything

So after that incident Lloyd constantly checks up on Kai during missions and summer to the point it becomes annoying to Kai

I have a lot more I wanna say about the first time he got overheated, but Imma leave that for a different post that's gonna be specifically only about this >:)

Kai head cannons

Enjoy my trash opinions

Kai is the shortest ninja. You can pull this hc from my cold dead hands.

•my hight chart goes from shortest to tallest Kai, jay, Lloyd, nya, zane, Cole.

•jay is two inches taller than Kai, kai hates that.

•Lloyd and nya are taller than Kai but that will not stop this man from being over protective.

Kai is a skinny legend.

•Manly because when he was a kid he would eat less food so nya could eat more.

•this has developed into a bad habit

•most of the time the rest of the ninja have to force him to eat more. For example putting stuff on Kai’s plate so he has to eat it because he doesn’t like wasting food.

He has eyebags Deeper than the endless sea

•this man has insomnia

•he is also an incredibly light sleeper. The tiniest noise will wake him up.

•he actually has passed out because of lack of sleep before.

•after the fifth time he passed out wu forced him to get sleeping pills

•they only helped a little.

Kai is Asian with a bit of whiteness

•I hc ray as Asian and maya as white

•since both of his parents have black hair. Kai got his brown from mayas dad.

•maya always says that Kai looks a lot like her dad

He has an alcohol issue

•he’s an alcoholic

•this started in the red shogun era

•the rest of the ninja became aware of the problem during the tournament of elements

•after the tournament kai attempted to stop drinking so he could support Lloyd cuz he had just lost his dad

•he keeps this up for like 2 months but then morro comes barging in like the unhelpful but hole he is (I’m still not over oncler morro you heathens have ruined Morro for me) and Kai slips up and starts drinking again due to the stress of loosing Lloyd and multiple failures to get him back

•after possession he keeps sober mostly with small blips of drunkenness

•up until the whole my parents might be evil thing

•this part has to do with my season 7 rewrite so I’m not going to go into much detail (manly because the rewrite isn’t ready yet) but he does have a slip up

•after HoT he’s back to having blips but mostly stays sober

•haven’t figured out what he does post season 10 so I’ll get back to that

His scar makes him semi blind

•his original scar was non blinding and was shallow

•he got that when he was being careless in the forge and a bunch of metal fell from a shelf and almost shanked him. He would have been impailed if nya hadn’t grabbed him and pulled him away. The only injury I got was a tiny scratch on his eye that healed quickly. By season 8 it’s disappeared completely.

•his other eye scare is worse. He got it when on a infiltration mission w/Lloyd in between seasons 7 & 8. They were infiltrating a human smuggling ring and lloyd being the terrible actor he is blew his cover. The ringleaders of the smuggling ring were about to kill Lloyd but Kai jumped in last minute and took the blow for Lloyd. The slash went all across his face and took out his eye, but it gave Lloyd the opportunity to fight back and get the both of them out of there. Kai was taken to a hospital and treated while jay and Cole finished taking down the ring. Lloyd really beat himself up after finding out that Kai was blind in one eye and really blamed himself for it. But Kai immediately said that he rather lose an eye than have Lloyd die. Afterword Kai got a sick glass eye and a scar that he says looks really cool.

Also just to say I am basing the alcoholism after a family member that I’ve heard stories about. I do not have first hand experience with alcoholism and if I’m misrepresenting this condition I am sorry.

That’s all the hcs I wanna share today so I might make a part two but who knows.

one lazy afternoon, you and him are in bed, toji wraps his arms around your waist, resting his head on your chest. he grabs your wrist and places your hand on his head. you look at him, and take a minute to understand what he’s doing. he wants head scratches.you smile down at him and run your fingers through his hair, your nails scratching his scalp lightly. “mmmh” he hums softly, nuzzling further into your chest, a small smile on his face. around 5 minutes later, you tilt your head to see if he’s asleep. his eyes are closed and seems to be asleep already so you slowly remove your hand from his scalp. “tch” he clicks his tongue.his eyes brows knit, he grabs your wrist again, and places your hand on his head again. you giggle softly, kissing his forehead. again a small smile creeps up his lips . you suddenly feel so giddy and happy, you squeeze him tightly, peppering and showering him with kisses. he smiles widely, his eyes still shut, feeling your soft lips pressing against all over his face. “my baby” you whisper, wrapping your arms around him, patting and rubbing his back. he’d definitely want to say “i’m not a baby” but he chose to savor this moment. deep down he knows, he loves it all, way too much. he just wants to be loved.

☆ YEONJUN

constantly keeping his hand on your waist. such an action may seem futile and unnoticeable considering yeonjun’s the one doing it, but it still makes you confused. yeonjun’s known to be flirty, a literal heartthrob wherever he goes. he’s also very touchy, easily hugging someone or putting his arm around their shoulder. but it’s only truly with you that he lets his hand rest on your hip, finger hooked into one of your jeans’ belt loops.

at first he started doing it at parties, after finding you in the crowd, arms circling your waist to keep you from getting lost in the wave of people. it continued at normal hangouts, laughing alongside his friends as his fingers fiddled with the hem of your top. then it happened when you two were alone, lounging on your couch while watching a movie. there wasn’t anything or anybody he had to protect you from, but he still slid his hand between the backrest and your body until you were practically glued to his side, his arm comfortably holding onto your waist.

you’re not sure why he does it; maybe to show others you’re not available– you are though, or to purposely tease you and make your heart skip a beat– something that already happens a lot in his presence. but one thing you know for sure is, it certainly doesn’t help your already weak heart.

☆ SOOBIN

being oddly protective of you. soobin is the least confrontational person you know, so it didn’t surprise you when he kept his mouth shut as one of your classmates teased him in class. that’s initially how you two became friends, him nursing your wounded fist after you punched the bully right in the nose for calling him a lanky nerd. 5th grade sure was wild. the following years, soobin tried his best to defend you like you defended him back in the day but again, he’s the least confrontational person you know. however, his best friend-instincts took over him when a guy tried to hike up your dress at the graduation party. you nursed his wounded fist after and the two of you became even closer. after the “fight of the century” soobin swore to himself he would protect you. at first, you found it funny, trying to stop yourself from blushing when he would raise his voice at whoever decided to bother you that day. you don’t really know when it started but with each new time, his best-friend protection act would slowly turn into something that held a lot more feelings than just platonic ones. the way he would look at you to see if you were alright, or the way his hand would slid into yours, or even the one time he called you his partner instead of his best friend. everything was slowly changing, and you didn’t even know if soobin was even aware of it himself.

☆ BEOMGYU

calls you his girlfriend. the first time he did it, you thought he was just joking around, trying to tease you. so you laughed it off, attempting to hide the way your heart fluttered at the thought of you being his actual girlfriend. but the second time, a week or so later, you were even more confused. did beomgyu think you two had something going on? did he find out about your old crush on him? you really didn’t know why he started calling you his girlfriend, since none of his other actions showed he felt anything except platonic feelings for you. he stopped after the fourth time, after he noticed your disoriented and clearly disheartened expression. weeks passed and not once did beomgyu explain his old but short habit to you. but then, months later, when you had almost forgotten about the whole ordeal, beomgyu did it again. to be honest, him calling you his girlfriend that time was in fact beneficial for you– you refused to talk any longer to the creep begging for your number. but the way the word rolled off his tongue, a hint of arrogance and a ton of proudness, made you reach for his hand, acting like the role he had assigned you. tension followed after, for weeks, and your heart continued to long for him. if only you knew you were the only thing on his mind whenever someone said the word “girlfriend”.

☆ TAEHYUN

constantly buys you things. it may seem shallow at first, but whenever taehyun brings you a small trinket or whatever food you were craving at that moment, your heart fills with joy. it’s not the way he spends money for you, but the way he looks at you when he gives it to you, eyeing you to see your neutral expression change into a happy one. taehyun’s a great listener, so he knows all your orders and favorite things by heart, which only makes it easier for him to empty his bank account for you. he swears you’re not special, or at least not more important than the rest of his friends– for whom he rarely ever buys anything– but he can’t really stop his brain from thinking of you when he sees something pretty or tasty at the mall. the dainty necklace around your neck is the literal proof of his favoritism towards you. he had given it to you on your graduation and you hadn’t taken it off since. it was a symbol for your friendship, he said, something to remember the many years you spent together, but the shiny “T” letter pendant made your heart swell every time you felt it against your skin. in all truth, taehyun was just waiting for you to notice the letter pendant of your name he wore on his necklace and hid, carefully, under his shirt collar.

he constantly mentions you two in his future. you and kai have been friends since the two of you were in diapers and basically experienced all your first together. spending all those years together, in the same neighborhood, school and friend groups lead to many talks about your futures, sometimes wiping anxious tears away or doubling over from laughter at the mention of so many possibilities. it was a normal thing for you two, getting together and just talking about whatever would be on your mind at that moment. every conversation was different but one thing never changed, the way huening kai wouldn’t forget to mention you in his future plans. he would have pictured everything out, you two living next to each other in your own homes, working across the street from each other, adopting pets at the same time so they could be friends, meeting every friday for a ramen and movie night… whenever you were worried about what the future prepared for you, kai would comfort you, reminding you that no matter what happened later, he would always be there. it always reassured you but unfortunately, you never had the guts to tell him that you’d prefer to live together later, spend your work lunch breaks together, adopt a pet together, and turn every night into a movie marathon.
