my portrayal of juvia won’t have her being obsessed with Gray. She is still in love with him but she does not see every female as a love rival and she’s not only focused on him. Juvia is a complex and complicated character who deserves so much more than to be referred to only as a ( side ) character who is in love with one of the main characters. Juvia wants to be loved by gray, sure, but she can also grow to get over it if gray doesn’t love her back, she can grow to love other people ! Juvia has other relationships and dynamics that are going to be so fun to develop and explore --- gray is not what her character relies on. ( that being said, i do ship grayxjuvia but i also ship so much more, romantic , platonic. etc . )

HEADCANON: DESCENDANT OF OCEANIDS .
Juvia is not entirely human, but she is closer to mortal than to Oceanid.
To excel at water magic is one thing, but to excel at such a young age, and to influence the rain-clouds themselves is another thing entirely. And that’s not including Juvia’s resilience. She just refuses to die.
It is said that Juvia’s great-great-grandmother wasn’t a human. That she had always resided by the sea, and in fact, her great-great-grandfather had left his life behind to be with her. And one day, she had vanished. No one around knew a thing about her, or her family. But she’d had peculiar things about her, and even stranger needs - that tipped her grandfather off that his fiancee may not be human.
He never got any confirmation, nor did he ever hear of his beloved again. That beach had always been said to be guarded by the Oceanids.
The water-boon was said to skip a generation. And so, her grandfather had been born with the gift before Juvia herself.
A watered-down version of the blessing, but to be fair, there was a number of generations before her.
TLDR; here are some of Juvia’s unique benefits:
⋆ Increased constitution; hence why she has survived brutal injuries and severe blood loss. It is safe to assume that she will live up to be quite old.
⋆ A ‘sixth sense’; Juvia feels wrong in her body when danger is around the corner, but she never knows the source why.
⋆ She can influence the rainfall via her explosive emotions. Juvia has had trouble regulating her emotions for most of her life ( for most of her childhood and teen years ), and whenever she’s depressed or angry, she will cause an involuntary rain.
⋆ Water rejuvenation: soaking in water ( salt water for best results ) both relaxes her and makes her feel recharged - although it does nothing to help speed up her healing ( though Juvia does recover quite well ).
⋆ Proficiency at casting water-body.
⋆ Juvia very rarely scars. Her only scars are from very deep wounds which took much longer to heal and mend the skin-tissue ( example: she has a large scar just above her abdomen, below her chest after the war ). Other than that, her skin is mostly very glowy.

i really like your meta/read-through posts and have a slightly odd question - i know the art style kinda devolves into same face/body type for most characters eventually, but before that, who do you think are meant to be the most objectively attractive characters in-universe, male and female? i'd like to track this as a reference for generating my own headcanons/etc, but after a point in the story all the guys have six-pack abs and all the ladies are generically cute and busty so... your thoughts?
Hmmm... honestly, it's a half-half on whether FT characters are canonically attractive or just attractive in Lucy's eyes. Let's go with somewhere down the middle of that. I'd say any girl that's made an appearance in canon Sorcerer spreads is considered canonically super attractive. I'd put a hold on putting guys on similar ranks though, since boys seem to be more based on strength. I'm currently memory blanking on everything from Alvarez onwards so don't mind me not mentioning them.
Note that I'm not caring for the harvest festival in fantasia, that was a real life popularity poll and thus has no standing in canon popularity.
For the girls: Top on the list are definitely Erza and Mirajane! They're pretty much specifically known for being drop-dead gorgeous who can kill you also. I'd put the mainliners of Mermaid Heel here, with Jenny Realight and Karen Lilica. Aries and Aquarius are also always mentioned for their beauty. Cana should be around here as well. Also Minerva. It feels weird to put Wendy and Chelia here, but they're canonically absolutely the cutest little angels in the world, so they fit on this scale in their own way. Human Carla too. And Ultear! Almost forgot Ultear. ALMOST FORGOT NIRVANA ARC SHERRY
Girls that are canonically considered 'upper to mid' or to whoever's tastes: Lucy, Bisca, Levy, Juvia? Not sure about Juvia, I feel she's complimented for both her strength and sometimes her appearance, but mostly it's just Lyon for the latter? Kinana! Virgo! I wanted to put Evergreen up top, but now that I think about it, maybe it's because of her ego, but she's never truly made out to be as attractive as she thinks she is. She's gorgeous to me, but everyone canonically just goes 'yeah, yeah' to her and she is always immediately shot down by being compared to Erza.
For the boys: The Trimens, Loke, and Jellal/Siegrain to cross off the obvious ones. They were all on Lucy's hotties list. Lyon. Freed. Gray if he has his clothes on.
For the boys, it's a bit harder to gauge. Cause for the boys, sometimes they're just hailed for being strong and buff, which means we go into some other attractiveness category. Elfman and Natsu are on this end, but they'd never cross over into the ranking with the Trimens-- but then again, Laxus and Gray could be in both! So, it's complicated. And Jason is enthusiastic about both of them so yeah. Also, while the girls are attractive no matter what, the boys always have a 'but' to them that drags them down on the scale. Loke's a womanizer, so Lucy is turned off. Gray's cool, but where are his clothes? etc.
Also, while most of our girls are on a canon attractive scale of some sort, most of our boys seem to be on a canon unattractive scale. Yes this is because Mashima and I think that's kinda funny

Hey y'all so Gr*ia right? Like fucking hell. Just god. I'm not even saying this has a shipper, (if you must know I am a multi shipper) but the v I b e???? Not fuckin liking it!!!!!
Gr*ia has a cute aesthetic, visually it does. I can see that, IF Juvia wasn't abusive, a stalker & had zero regard for Gray's mental health and happiness. While Gray the traumatized man, who has rejected Juvia multiple times. If you want the exact moments/a few examples check out this Meta by @jinx13gxa! If you want a in depth analysis of Gray & how his trauma affects his relationships, Check This Out. (Also be aware that Meta isn't ship wise but does focus a bit on Gray's relationship with Natsu which can be used has a healthy relationship guide for Gray) This one is a little more shippy I guess but does include examples for Gray and his relationships including Juvia.
But getting on with this, I don't think there ever is a way for me to look past what Gr*ia is. As a small recap: Juvia has tried to drug Gray before with a " love potion ", Constantly follows him around even to places she shouldn't ever be following him to. She has started using subtle munipulation tactics & acting frankly fucking crazy towards Gray.
Now that last one is a big, big red flag and huge thing. So here are some examples:
This is what she views the Dolls has. Actual women. Her reaction? To declare them " Romantic Rivals ". Any other character, seeing Gray half beaten into a building would be concerned about him. Not about some actual cursed dolls.
Gray, about to be attacked? You'd think she would give a fuck about that right? Maybe she would be concerned about his actual health and life? Nope. She somehow thinks a metal enemy is going to ' embrace gray-sama from behind. '
Gets super fucked up and when you realize Gray just didn't want her to die. She created a whole elaborate ideal of him based off of how he saved her from dying. Cry " Oh but he made the rain stop! " All you want. It doesn't mean shit. Anyone could of been decent to Juvia but no one was. It's not good to use that has your reason when anyone could of done the same. Anyone with a decent head on their shoulders would of tried.
What really gets me is the fact that Juvia treats him like he's something she owns. Like Gray is her favorite plushie. If anyone did that in real life they would be cut off, broken up with. Also Here are The Basic Signs Of An Abuser if you can't comperhend anything I just said. Kinda funny how Juvia checks off multiple boxes on that list. Possessiveness? Yup. Isolating you from friends and family? Yeah. Grabbing you out of nowhere? Yeah. Violating your personal bubble on more than one occasion? Yeah. (Edit: Making dolls and having a soap the shape of you and even fucking going: Oh Gray-sama you are touching me everywhere!)
Juvia is a toxic character and only because Mashima made her into one. It's plain to see. Gray has been literally dragged into her bullshit more than once. I don't understand how people think this is a good ship when realizing that Mashima not only ruined Juvias character but Gray's has well for having Juvia be abusive and constantly by his side.
That is harmful on many levels. Mainly because people may not realize it is abusive and think it's okay to be treated/act like that. It's a problem. And the fact that no one is talking about it and when someone does say something about it they get put down & told to kill themselves really says something.

Gruvians: It's just fiction! stop taking it so seriously! Also Gruvians: writes long metas on why the ship is brilliant, stalks accounts they were blocked by to bitch about said account not liking their ship, stalks posts they disagree with & vehemently reading the tags within each reblog of said posts & treats head canons such as a Gray liking Lucy & Erza first before Juvia as some sort of personal attack against them.
A large part of the GrUvia fanbase seems to be built on insecurity, and I think that for exactly the reasons you mentioned.
The GrUvia ship has come under a lot more scrutiny than most other ships in Fairy Tail, and I think it's resulted in them being completely unwilling to think about their ship in any kind of nuance.
One of our friends once mentioned that they don't support the ship in one of the most innocent ways possible, and it led to several days worth of battling with GrUvia fans and explaining her stance and why she was justified in her opinion. It got to the extent that she had to explicitly state that she would not be responding to any more asks because she didn't want her blog to become known for being anti-GrUvia. Just for stating an opinion. That is how quick the ship's fanbase are to anger.
You're either supportive and unequivocally good, or you're not and you must be attacked.
We've seen evidence that this has even extended over their ability to think critically about each other. We've received asks about how there is a psychologist in the GrUvia fanbase who thinks that the ship is healthy, and one of our admins was in the fandom when the whole GrUvia University thing went down. If I was a GrUvia fan, I would be disgusted by how they're treating people.
They cannot handle the idea that there is a space that exists in the Fairy Tail fandom that doesn't welcome them. Whenever we post things with the tagline "GRUVIA FANS: DO NOT INTERACT" we'd get at least 1 ask from a butt-hurt fan who could not find it in themselves to take our advise to block us and move on, and instead had tantrums after tantrums in our ask box.
(Hi, one of the other admins here popping in for just a second! Quick tw for a mention of stalking. I’ve been doxxed twice, I still get sent death threats, harrassed online, harassed in real life, and my stalker used this ship as an example of why I had to fall in love with him if he just kept trying. I personally am convinced that they’re too stupid to realize how hypocritical they are when they say don’t apply it to real life. Fiction always affects reality, even when it’s not blatantly obvious, and people really need to be more conscious of that and the fact that there are levels to it. A character’s favorite color may not have a big impact in real life, but normalizing abusive relationships has a massive negative impact, as seen by all the victims sharing their stories on this blog and those who share their stories elsewhere, because let’s face it, this nasty ship is not the only time an abusive relationship has been romantisized.
That being said, this does not mean all GrUvia shippers are stalkers/abusers. Fiction does affect reality, but that doesn't mean it controls reality. People have moral compasses, and sometimes they like to explore weird/amoral/dark things in fiction, and it's better to do that in ficiton than in real life. The problem lies within the fact that the vast majority of them that I have personally interacted with (<- reread the bold part and use your reading comprehension skills please) have been willing to doxx, harass, or abuse others. Pro-Juvia and Pro-grUvia shippers are notorious for these things, but some anti-Juvia and Anti-GrUvia people are too. The problem lies within the attitude of the shippers even more so than the ship itself. If we could both have conversations about it, with respect that neither side is going to change the other's thoughts and opinions, then the fandom would be a much happier and safer place.
Personally, I would love if we could just coexist and enjoy Fairy Tail together. Alas, it is not meant to be, hence the creation and necessity of this vent space)
On some level, I do feel bad for the GrUvia fanbase that they have to exist with so much scrutiny. But then I remember the content of the ship itself, and I genuinely think that they've only ever made it worse for themselves by being aggressive.
If the fandom was able to have discussions like this, to talk about ships through a critical lens and have an actual conversation about this, the ship would still be awful. But the fandom, itself, wouldn't be viewed as this group of people with the mental complexity of toddlers.

juls my baby haha you deserve so much better 😭 some random factoids about juls: she loves the color yellow (has a yellow phone case, yellow amp, yellow guitar—you get the idea) bc of a near death experience in her childhood involving a yellow elevator. if i say anymore it’s spoilers but she holds that color close for a reason lol. she’s also very bi. the narrative does focus a lot on her attraction to joaquin (bc he’s hot like 😭) but i know from Meta she is attracted to pretty much all the friends she has except rene bc rene has a gf and he’s not really her type lmao. but saul, andres, daisy & joaquin she’s 👀. honestly when i write draft two i think im gonna try to make it More obvious that she’s attracted to all of them lol. in the “it never happened” au they’re a polycue to me. she adores her older sister juvia and would fight tooth and nail for her, but she has an estranged relationship from both of her parents. her original goal at the start of the book is to become a famous recording artist but her dream quickly shifts to i just want to be a one hit wonder. make one great song, get money and fame, then disappear from the public eye. she’s both headstrong and cowardly at the same time—just a girl full of juxtapositions lol
san 🤌🏾🤌🏾 SHE. so, san is a hunter—hunters are the first specialized fighting class that ever came into being in terrae (came about around 450-470 but i cant be assed to pull out the timeline rn) as a response to the decimation and overrun of the first capital city of terrae, argos. hunters are very proud of their heritage and it’s pretty unusual for them to enter guilds but san (and her sister moira by proxy) are some of the few exceptions. hunters are ALL ABOUT DAMAGE BABY. armor? who needs that we die like men. they tend to wear revealing, hardly armored clothes made of leather and hides, decorated with furs, spikes and belts (this goes for all genders—it came about bc when hunters came into being there was a huuuuge shortage on materials to make armor so they just went without and it’s become a tradition at this point). san herself uses a short sword and a whip, usually in tandem. she’s the youngest of the mc bunch, and it kind of shows in her temper 😅. she has a huge grudge against her elder sister (aforementioned moira) and hates being seen as weak. she’s very argumentative and untrusting, which isn’t unusual for someone from eros however san does take it to an extreme. it does eventually mellow out for her as she learns to trust her team but MAN she has them all going through it for awhile lmao
chidorkyyyyy. i’ve rambled about him so much already tbh lol but something i do wanna draw attention to is despite how fun loving, energetic, clumsy etc that he is, he’s extremely good at his job as a train master. it’s like he was born for it in many ways. i get the whole thing of having mcs who are incompetent bc they have to learn and they’re underdogs but i don’t really want that for chidorky? like he’s quite skilled and it’s hard to tell Why bc he’s never done this before yknow! he also has great chemistry with his weapon, torment, which is embedded with cool ass glowing pink gems btw. but i haven’t figured out the entire weapon system i just know it’s one of those “your weapon chooses you” situations. he can be very serious when he needs to be and it throws people off guard tho basically lol

One of my favourite things about Fairytail is the representation of female bonds:
Meta ahead.
Like you often see Lucy and Erza sharing one braincell, Lucy and Wendy doing fun activities together, the bond between Mavis and Zera, Lucy and Cana. It is genuine and not just for the sake for having female characters but real friendship.
As much as Lucy is around Natsu, she never ignores her girlfriends for the sake of it. Lucy even asked Cana to be her teammate during Tenrou trials well knowing that Natsu is stronger and will have a better chance.
And they even succeed they trial with easy...
Such girlboss!
And even Juvia who gets a lot of sh*t for being reduced to a love interest has solid girl bonds outside of Gray. She's friends with Meredy, Erza, Cana is always teasing Juvia about Gray and especially with Lucy, her bond has came a long way.
And do I have to remind you that Lucy and Juvia did the first UNISON RAID if the series?
A spell that wizards aren't able to master for decades and need an especially close sync bond? A move that even surprised Jellal? Lucy and Juvia managed to do it in the first try!
And this is after Juvia defeated Keys in Tartaros. Juvia was trying to save Lucy from Keys and when she passed out after the battle, Lucy catches her. When Juvia starts crying, Lucy cries with her.
Wendy and Chelia share quite a spectacular bond along with Wendy and Erza. Chelia was such a friend that knowingly and willingly sacrificed her Magic to save her best friend and defeat a God.
Even Erza is friends with Milliana and later Kagura and Minerva.
Lucy also has a lot of connections outside the guild, like Brandish which is the daughter of her mom's best friend and her current rival in finding Aquarius's key.
We have Lucy and Yukino, who are mutual Celestial spirit mages that share quite a history together. She was with Lucy in the GMG and CSK arc and made an appearance in the recent chapter when Lucy had a monologue about her friends.
Lucy and Mira are also very close. You can see that Lucy finally starts crying after Mira says "Welcome Home, Lucy" because it was Mira that welcomed her to Fairytail even the first time around. She is also the one that gave Lucy her pink Guildmark. Mira has always been a big sister to Lucy giving her advices, looking out for her and the guild.
She is family.
And this is why when Lucy says that she's home it contains so much value.
I agree that Ft may not be the best manga out there and many people may disregard it saying it has a lot of Fanservice but you can't deny that it has one of the best representation of female cast in Manga especially when compared to the likes of Naruto or BnHA where some people have claimed pure Mysogyny.
The reason why in the recent popularity poll, the top 3 are all females and the main Shonen protagonist is in 5th spot. Even before it was Erza that was usually on the No.1 spot and now it belongs to Lucy.
So while people say ft treats women with no respect, I say that the real respect is shown in how well they are written and not by the number of clothes they wear.

What the word “canon” actually means (Japan vs The West)
Canon, canon, canon. How many times have we seen this word thrown around and how many times do we see fans argue over what’s considered canon? Plenty! Let’s clear up some confusion.
“Canon” simply means “official in story”, regardless of subject. It’s canon x character has red hair, it’s canon these characters are in love, it’s canon x is stronger than y, etc.
There is not a one-to-one translation for “canon” in the Japanese language, as it is a very western concept. However, they do have their own word for it, which is the actual definition of canon. In Japan, the word for canon is 公式 (kōshiki/official). But their perception of what constitutes official is different than that of the west.
There is a cultural difference between Japan and the west, as Japanese fans consider “canon” couples to have clearly defined mutual feelings. Meanwhile, the west needs “canon” to be far more explicit, such as dating, marriage, and/or kids. Such differences are indicative of the general relationships, dating, and courtship rituals between the cultures (ie: the Japanese are far more subtle and private about relationships in general). In reality though, what really matters are Japanese tropes/conventions because this is a Japanese manga written by a Japanese man and largely geared towards a Japanese audience. As such, placing Western expectations on a Japanese work can lead to differences in opinion; however, it is up to us, as the Western readers, to embrace and understand a different mindset to fully get the intent.
Therefore, if the author (which by the way, Mashima-sensei considered Gruvia canon in 545, the final chapter of the original) and fans consider a ship canon/official even without explicit dating, perhaps we who are overseas should feel the same way. The Japanese fans have considered Gruvia to be canon for quite awhile.
EDIT: Here is a Japanese article (you can use google translate to understand) from March 2020 that lists the ships that Japan considers canon/official with a brief explanation why. As expected, Gruvia is on there. ;)

About Gray’s final words in chapter 84
I think the last time I wrote a meta about Gruvia was like... years ago for chapter 499/500, in the original story. ^^”
Today though, after reading certain comments about chapter 84 from FT100YQ, I felt like some people need to read this- I personally do not think that what Gray said needs an explanation. Gray has been and keeps being very blunt and crystal clear about his intentions with Juvia: juvia means the world to me, I wanna become a man who can protect her, and then I swear I will make her mine, she’s my power to live... okay, that’s a lot. it’s just a matter of reading comprehension and context at this point.
“I don’t want to be happy.”
I guess this is the “problematic” part. Context will help us: Gray had just had a taste of what happiness is to him: loved ones from his past (Silver, Ur, Ultear), loved ones from his present (Juvia) and even loved ones from his future (Greige) all gathering together as a family to celebrate a special occasion, his birthday. He had a taste of his perfect dream life and it’s important to notice that, not even once, he fell for this “trap”: he keeps saying to himself “it’s a dream... it’s a dream...” and finally “IT’S WRONG”.
Why is it wrong? Because he knows he’s living a FAKE reality, simply as that.
Silver, Ur and Ultear won’t come back to him. He knows this is his personal utopia: the past is the past, what is lost is lost. It’s his selfish desire and he knows that accepting this fantasy means not only losing the present and future (real Juvia, Greige and the family he wants to start) but also dwelling on the past- and, after over 500 chapters from the original story and sequel, we all know he wants to look forward to the future and just be over it already. It’s a fact.
Why should he stay in this fake dream, then? Why should THIS be his happiness? There you have it. He doesn’t want to be happy- he doesn’t want to be happy like this. Context.
Many are interpreting it as he doesn’t want happiness in general because he’s either feeling guilty or because that bitch Juvia trapped him in a love story he clearly doesn’t want (lol)... but nope, his sentence just needs context.
Gray wants to be happy with Juvia and Greige.
The hallucination starts with Juvia as his wife waking him up lovingly and his son greeting him with a very sweet “daddy!”. This is what he wants, what makes him happy: having the family he’s always dreamt of, that family which was stolen from him as a kid by Deliora. This is his happiness- present and future.
His very happiness is his power to live, his strenght... it’s that one woman he’s fighting for, he’s living for. It’s Juvia.
And you know what comes next?
"I want to make Juvia happy.”
Her happiness is his. His happiness is hers. They love each other so deeply and it’s so crystal clear... as I said, it didn’t even need an explanation.
If you love someone you want them to be happy- and in Gray’s case, considering the context of the chapter AND his ongoing development, this is his new hapiness.
He’s not denying his own happiness as many said for the sake of Juvia: yes, she’s his priority right now, but he’s not really putting her happiness over his. They want the same thing and they will be happy together with wonderful kid(s) hopefully in a near future.
I love Gray because his development is one of a kind in Fairy Tail. He’s a special person and deserves the world. Also, let me just say one final thing: with this chapter he definitely gets the crown for the most romantic boy in FT. A lover boy through and through like Juvina would say. haha!
Enjoy this chapter guys, we’re in for something big.

i just read the last few chapters of FT and man i skipped like 100 chapters but literally nohthing changed i didnt feel lost at all
